Privacy is built in.

Online privacy isn’t just something you should hope for — it’s something you should expect. That’s why Safari comes with industry-leading privacy protection technology built in, including Intelligent Tracking Prevention that identifies trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Upgrading to iCloud+ gives you even more privacy protections, including the ability to sign up for websites and services without having to share your personal email address.

Intelligent Tracking Prevention

update safari installer

Safari stops trackers in their tracks.

What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on‑device intelligence to help prevent cross‑site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.

Privacy Report

Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Click Privacy Report in the Safari menu for a snapshot of cross-site trackers currently prevented from profiling you on the website you’re visiting. Or view a weekly Privacy Report to see how Safari protects you as you browse over time.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Apple Pay and Wallet make checkout as easy as lifting a finger.

Apple Pay is the easiest and most secure way to shop on Safari — allowing you to complete transactions with Face ID or Touch ID on your iPhone or iPad, with Touch ID on your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, or by double-clicking the side button on your Apple Watch.

With AutoFill, you can easily fill in your previously saved credit card information from the Wallet app during checkout. Your credit card details are never shared, and your transactions are protected with industry-leading security.

Same Safari. Different device.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video, or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

When you use Safari on multiple devices, your tabs carry over from one Apple device to another. So you can search, shop, work, or browse on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad or Mac and pick up right where you left off.

Save web pages you want to read later by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the internet.

iCloud Keychain securely stores your user names, passkeys, passwords, and credit card numbers and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favorite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.

I Bet You Didn't Know About These Cool Google Easter Eggs

Today's nyt connections hints and answer for july 5 (#390), 7 accounts you must always protect with two-factor authentication, quick links, keeping safari updated, how to update safari in system preferences.

It's a good practice to keep your web browser constantly updated for security reasons , but Apple Safari on Mac doesn't have an update button. Here's how to keep Safari updated.

Every year, Apple releases new features for Safari, and you usually install them without realizing it because they're linked to macOS updates that you get in System Preferences.

But because Safari is a browser, Apple often lets you update to the latest version of Safari without installing the next big OS release. For example, while Safari 14.0 came bundled in macOS Big Sur , macOS Catalina users can still update to it. Apple also provides regular security updates to older versions of Safari, which is the main reason why  we recommend that you keep it updated .

Related: Why You Should Update All Your Software

To update Safari, you'll have to use the Software Update feature in System Preferences. To get there, click the Apple icon in the top-left corner of the screen.

In the menu that appears, choose the "System Preferences" option.

In System Preferences, click "Software Update."

The Software Update panel will show you whether there are any software updates available for your Mac. If there are, you have two choices.

If you want to install the latest operating system along with the latest version of Safari, just click the "Update Now" button and follow the process.

Related: Why You Should Update Your Web Browser

If you only want to install an update to Safari, click "More Info" under the list of available updates to see a detailed list of all updates.

After clicking "More info," a panel will appear listing the updates available for your Mac. Make sure that the "Safari" update is selected, and uncheck "macOS" if you don't want to install a system update along with it. When you're ready, click "Install Now."

After a while, the Safari update will be installed on your Mac.

Once the update process is finished, you can safely quit the System Preferences app using the red Close button in the corner of the window.

Since this process is somewhat confusing and non-obvious, we recommend enabling the auto-update feature to keep Safari and your Mac updated. Good luck!

  • Mac OS X Lion 10.7 ( Direct DMG Download)

Many of these MacOS installers arrive as InstallAssistant.pkg files that will extract the full installer into the /Applications folder on the Mac.

New versions of MacOS installers are typically available through the Mac App Store, accessed through a computer that is compatible with the latest Mac system software release.

Older versions of Mac OS X installers can often be downloaded as well, but from different sources.

For earlier versions of Mac OS X, including Mac OS X Mavericks 10.9, Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8, Mac OS X Lion 10.7, Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6, Mac OS X Leopard 10.5, Mac OS X Tiger 10.4, and before, the process to obtain those installers differs a bit.

Downloading MacOS Installers via Terminal

Mac users can download the latest macOS installer available from the Terminal by using the following command string:

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer

You can also download specific installer versions by using the following syntax, replacing the asterisks with version number:

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version **.**.*

For example, to get macOS 11.3.1 the syntax would be as follows:

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 11.3.1

Downloading Mac OS X Installers from App Store “Purchases”

If you had at one point in time purchased or downloaded a version of MacOS or Mac OS X from the Mac App Store, then you should be able to re-download it from the Mac App Store by going go the “Purchases” section. This can typically be used to access downloads for installers for MacOS Mojave, High Sierra, Sierra, Mavericks, and Mountain Lion, though there are some caveats and exceptions.

  • Open the App Store
  • Go to the “Purchases” section (newer App Store versions must go to Account > Purchases)
  • Scroll down the list of Purchased items to locate the Mac OS X Installer version you wish to re-download, then click on the download button

This works particularly well if the Mac you’re downloading the software onto is running an older version of Mac OS X.

This approach for re-downloading older OS X installers from App Store Purchases section works for obtaining many older versions of Mac OS X, particularly if the machine doing the downloading is running an older Mac release too. For example, re-downloading Mavericks from Yosemite , whereas if you’re running the App Store from newer versions of MacOS you’d need to follow the links further above to download the installers directly, or via the App Store links.

Downloading Mac OS X Snow Leopard

If you’re a registered Apple developer then you may be able to download Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Mac OS X Leopard directly from Apple ADC using the following links:

  • Download Mac OS X Snow Leopard (DMG file, via Apple ADC downloads)
  • Download Mac OS Leopard (DMG file, ADC download link)

Downloading / Buying Mac OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, Mac OS X Snow Leopard

Apple also sells some older Mac OS X versions for convenience:

  • Buy Mountain Lion from Apple for $20
  • Buy Lion from Apple for $20

For buying even older versions of Mac OS X, you may have some luck searching on Amazon or Ebay and buying old physical copies of the installer disks. Keep in mind those earlier Mac OS X software updates used to cost a significant amount of money to update to and so even if they’re hold they can still carry a premium.

Another option is to peruse the Apple Vintage Software collection at which may have image files of older system restore disks and other older system software, just beware that is not an official distributor of Apple software so appropriate precautions should be taken and only download from there at your own risk.

Finally, if you’re looking to download much older classic Mac OS software, check out this article which discusses finding original classic Mac OS System releases that go back far before the transition to Mac OS X and Unix underpinnings.

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Where to download just the Safari dmg/pkg

The internet traffic between our managed macOS Mojave laptops and the Apple Software Updates website is blocked for security reasons. So I can not use the regular System Preferences - Software Update to update native macOS software.

This is not an issue for me, because every time Apple release a Software Update, I wait a week or so and I visit the following URL and I download the specific package (in .dmg format), I save the .dmg package into a USB Stick and I update the macOS laptops and I am good to go.

Now, the problem is that Apple just released an important security update just for Safari 14.1.2.

My question is since that I believe this time it is just Safari the issue, is Apple going to publish just the Safari .dmg package update on the regular website? If not, how can I download just the Safari 14.1.2 in .dmg/.pkg format so I can install into our macOS Mojave laptops?

Thank you so much in advance for your help.

Here is the Apple Url where you can get the URL for the recent 14.1.2 Safari update for Mojave,

This opens up a very long list of Apple updates going back to 2015. The most recent updates appear at the bottom of the list,

so you can go straight to the bottom of the list and slowly scroll up till you get to the download you want. Please see the screenshot below,

update safari installer

The highlighted area is the address to copy and paste into a browser window.

Another quicker way to find the desired download link is to click on Edit in the menubar of the browser

and go to Find > Find... At the top of the browser window you should now see an area where you can enter

some keyword(s) to narrow the search, for example Safari14.1.2Mojave would result in this,

update safari installer

You can see the search has highlighted three files that match. The one ending in .pkg is the one to download.

We are fellow users and have no knowledge of future Apple business or product planning. There is no standalone, full installer for the current version of Safari, as it is only available bundled with the operating system, or via a Security update.

Safari for Windows 10: How To Get and Install It

Plus, why you shouldn't do this

Author avatar

If you use a Mac or an iPhone, it’s hard to pick a different browser over Safari. It’s incredibly fast, uses minimal resources, and respects user privacy. But if you also use a PC, you won’t have the luxury of installing Apple’s flagship browser on Windows since the Cupertino-based tech giant does not develop Safari for the Windows PC. That’s a major issue when your gear consists of cross-platform products.

What you can do is install an older version of Safari on Windows 10 or 11, although we highly advise against that due to compatibility and security-related issues. The best and safest option is to sync your browsing data from Safari to Chrome or Edge on your PC via iCloud for Windows. Setting up macOS on your PC and using Safari that way is another feasible option.

Safari for Windows 10: How To Get and Install It image 1

Download and Install Safari on Your Windows PC

Apple halted the development of Safari for Windows in 2012. However, the final version of the browser (Safari v.5.1.7) is freely available on the internet, so you can quickly download and install it on your Windows 10 or 11 PC. The problem? It’s terribly slow and dated, lacks compatibility with most web apps, and poses security risks. You also can’t sync your browsing data, so it’s not a solution if you want to access bookmarks and passwords.

Regardless, the steps below will walk you through downloading and installing Safari on your Windows 10/11 PC. But unless you just want to have a feel of how Safari looked almost a decade earlier, we recommend you stay away from it.

1. Download the Safari installer from a software download portal such as Uptodown , Filehippo , or TechSpot . It weighs in at 36.7MB. Unfortunately, Apple no longer supports Safari for Windows, so you can’t get it from an official source.

2. Double-click the downloaded SafariSetup executable file.

3. Select Next on the Safari Setup’s Welcome screen.

After installing Safari, you can choose to open it by double-clicking the Safari icon on the desktop. Or, you can open it by selecting Safari on the Start menu’s programs list.

Despite being almost ten years old, Safari for Windows doesn’t look too out of place. To the top, you have the familiar URL bar (you can’t use it to perform searches, however), a Bookmarks strip underneath, and a dedicated Search bar on the left corner. By default, new tabs display frequently visiting sites in thumbnail format—you can use the Top Sites and History tabs to switch them and your browsing history.

Selecting the cog-shaped icon at the right corner of the screen reveals the Safari menu, where you can choose to customize the toolbar, access your browsing history, launch a private browsing window, and so on.

Selecting Preferences opens the Preferences pane, which provides options to modify the homepage, pick a default search engine, adjust privacy settings, manage extensions (although extensions support is non-existent), etc.

What the browser does not allow is to sign in with an Apple ID. That makes it impossible to sync your browsing data from an iPhone or Mac. Even if the functionality were present previously, Apple probably would’ve stopped you from signing in to it by now.

During our Safari tests on Windows, the browser started showing its age. Most websites took a long time to load, while web apps (such as YouTube and Google Maps) simply failed or prompted us to switch to a compatible browser. Other than for basic web browsing, it was practically useless.

Safari for Windows also hasn’t received security updates in almost a decade, so we recommend that you don’t attempt to use it for any sensitive activities such as banking or shopping.

Sync Safari Browsing Data via iCloud for Windows

If your gear consists of a PC and iPhone or Mac, you can sync your passwords and bookmarks from Safari with Google Chrome and vice-versa by installing iCloud for Windows. That’s the most convenient method for accessing your browsing data on each platform.

iCloud for Windows also offers password syncing for Microsoft Edge and bookmarks syncing for Mozilla Firefox. However, only Chrome receives support for both.

If you don’t have iCloud for Windows on your PC, you can get it via the Microsoft Store or the Apple website . If you already have it, make sure to upgrade it to at least version 12.5 or later (you can do that via the Microsoft Store’s Downloads and updates screen or by running the Apple Software Update applet).

With iCloud for Windows up and running, open the iCloud app and check the boxes next to Passwords and Bookmarks . You can also activate additional iCloud services such as Photos and Drive if you want.

Safari for Windows 10: How To Get and Install It image 10

Follow that by installing the iCloud Passwords on Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. The former lets you insert and save passwords to the iCloud Keychain. You can also use the iCloud Passwords app (which installs automatically alongside iCloud for Windows) to manage your passwords in Windows. On the other hand, the iCloud Bookmarks extension syncs passwords between Chrome/Firefox and Safari.

Run Safari via a macOS Virtual Machine

If you want to use the most recent version of Safari on your PC (perhaps to test a feature or extension), the only way you can do that is by running macOS via virtualization software. However, the procedure is not convenient. For starters, Mac’s operating system is not natively supported by most VM software, so installation generally relies on workarounds relying on additional software. Also, it requires lots of free disk space and uses up system resources, not to mention that virtual machine guests generally run sluggishly compared to the host operating system.

If you still want to go ahead and install macOS, the easiest way to do that is by following the instructions within this macOS Virtualbox project on GitHub. It lets you install macOS Catalina as a virtual machine via a Bash script. We’ve condensed it into the following steps:

1. Download and install Oracle VM VirtualBox on your PC (it’s free).

2. Download and install Cygwin with the following dependencies (you can select them during installation).

3. Download the bash script from GitHub.

4. Open the Cygwin Terminal. Then, drag and drop the bash script and press Enter .

5. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up macOS as a virtual machine on your PC.

Safari for Windows 10: How To Get and Install It image 11

After the setup procedure, you can open and use Safari by selecting the Safari icon on the Mac’s Dock. Before you do that, however, it’s a good idea to update macOS and Safari. To do that, open the Apple menu and select System Preferences > Software Update > Update Now .

iCloud for Windows Is the Most Convenient

Although it’s possible to download and install Safari on your Windows 10/11 computer, we recommend you stray away from it. The security risks alone make it impractical, and it’s not like you can use it for any serious web browsing anyway due to compatibility issues.

Since the most likely reason you would want to install Safari involves syncing your passwords and bookmarks, using iCloud for Windows is the only viable alternative. But if you do have the time and just want to try out the latest version of Safari, your best option is to set up macOS as a virtual machine on your PC.

How to Download Safari 17 Beta for macOS Ventura and Monterey

Apple is now allowing Mac users running macOS Ventura and macOS Monterey to try out its latest Safari 17 browser before it officially launches alongside macOS Sonoma in the fall. Keep reading to learn what's new and how to download it.

What's New in Safari 17 for macOS

As of writing, Safari 17 for macOS Ventura and Monterey has reached its fourth beta. Not only is it snappier with faster search responsiveness, it also has more relevant search suggestions – and easier-to-read suggestions. Here's what else is new:

  • Locked Private Browsing : Private browsing windows in Safari can now be locked when not in use, and require secondary authentication via Touch ID or your Mac's password to unlock and access for added privacy.
  • One-Time Code AutoFill from Mail : One-time verification codes you receive in Apple Mail now autofill in Safari, making it easy to log in without leaving the browser.
  • Advanced Tracking and Fingerprinting Protection : URLs in ‌Safari 17‌ can be stripped of all tracking information appended to the end of the URL so that websites cannot track your browsing using URL identifiers.
  • Multi-Tab Selection : You can now select multiple open tabs at once to move them around the tab bar or create a Tab Group for them.
  • Favicons in the Favorites Bar : You can now identify sites in the Favorites bar more easily with favicons.
  • Privacy Protections for App Extensions : You can now set per-site privacy settings for app extensions in addition to web extensions.
  • Safari Profiles : Safari has gained a new feature called Profiles, which is designed to help keep your browsing separate for topics like Work, School, or Personal. Each profile gets its own icon and silos your history, Tab Groups, favorites, and cookies. You can even assign specific extensions to profiles to optimize your browsing experience based on the task at hand.

How to Install Safari 17 on macOS Ventura/Monterey

In an unexpected change for 2023, anyone who signs in to Apple's developer account website with their Apple ID gets access to developer beta releases as well , even if they are not a paying member of Apple's Developer Program. So if you're still interested in trying out Safari 17, simply follow the steps below.

Note that Safari 17 Beta 4 requires macOS Ventura 13.4 or macOS Monterey 12.5 to run , and that installing it will overwrite your current Safari version. Also, bear in mind that this is beta software , so you may potentially experience bugs and issues that negatively impact your browsing. Having said that, beta 4 is very stable in our experience.

  • Open Safari on your Mac and go to Apple's developer website .
  • Under "Sign in to Apple Developer," enter and submit your Apple ID and password using the arrow buttons, then if required, enter the two-factor authentication code sent to your Apple devices.
  • Now click through to the Safari Beta Downloads page .
  • Under Safari 17, click View Details , then click the Safari 17 Beta DMG link to download the installation package applicable to your macOS version.
  • Once the package is downloaded to your Mac, double-click it and follow the onscreen instructions to complete installation.

I've long gone elsewhere too. There are quite a few websites that don't work on Safari. In fact I see a lot of organisations actively suggesting Chrome. Having said that the vast majority of web work for me is Chrome and FIrefox. Safari is probably 5%.

Last night, at 2AM in the night, I was on the bed and my phone made a sound, and that was the invitation for the beta of Safari 17 for my Mac on Monterey. However, I no longer install betas anymore, past are those days I tested every new beta with excitement while suffering the bugs and annoyances of using beta software. Nowadays I stay with the stable releases as much as I can. Thankfully, Safari keeps getting updates on older systems such as Monterey.

PSA: You can try Safari 18 beta on your Mac without installing macOS Sequoia

Avatar for Filipe Espósito

Safari is one of the many Apple apps bundled with iOS and macOS. With iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia, Apple has introduced Safari 18 with new features and improvements. However, when it comes to the Mac, you don’t need to update your Mac to macOS 15 in order to try out the new Safari 18 beta.

Safari 18 beta

The new version of Safari comes with Highlights, a new way to quickly find relevant information (such as an address or phone number) on a webpage. It also introduces a redesigned Reader that summarizes webpage content using AI. There are a lot of improvements in the backend too.

While features like Highlights will likely remain exclusive to iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia, the beta version of Safari 18 for previous versions of macOS brings many of the backend improvements.

This includes better support for accessibility features, new options for using Apple Pay on the web, support for the WebAuthn PRF extension, compatibility with new CSS and JavaScript features, and much more.

Anyone with a Mac running macOS Sonoma or macOS Ventura can download Safari 18 beta from the Apple Beta Software website . It’s worth noting that installing Safari beta on your Mac replaces the main Safari rather than keeping both versions, so don’t do this if you rely on Safari for your work.

For now, iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia are still available as beta previews for developers. A public beta will be released this month, while the official launch is scheduled for this fall. You can find the Safari 18 beta release notes here .

Create a bootable installer for macOS

You can use a USB flash drive or other secondary volume as a startup disk from which to install the Mac operating system.

These advanced steps are primarily for system administrators and other experienced users who are familiar with entering commands in Terminal.

You don't need a bootable installer to upgrade macOS or reinstall macOS , but it can be useful if you want to install macOS on multiple computers without downloading the installer each time, or if you can't install a compatible macOS from the Finder or macOS Recovery.

Download a full macOS installer from Apple

Connect a usb flash drive to your mac, use terminal to create the bootable installer, use the bootable installer.

To get a full macOS installer, download macOS from the App Store or your web browser using the links provided in How to download and install macOS .

Download from a Mac that is compatible with the macOS you're downloading. (If you’re downloading an older macOS, you might need to use an older Mac that is compatible with it.)

Download from a Mac that is using the latest version of OS X El Capitan, or any later version of macOS. Find out which macOS your Mac is using .

Enterprise administrators: Download from Apple, not a locally hosted update server.

After you have the installer:

Make sure that the installer is in the Applications folder of your startup disk. This is the folder that opens when you choose Go > Applications from the menu bar in the Finder.

Make sure that the installer is named Install [Version Name], such as Install macOS Sonoma. It must be an installer app, not a disk image (.dmg) or package (.pkg) that contains the installer.

Connect a USB flash drive or other secondary volume to your Mac.

When you create the bootable installer, this volume will automatically be erased.

A 32GB USB flash drive has more than enough storage space for any macOS installer, and 16GB is enough for most earlier versions of macOS. If more space is needed, Terminal will let you know.

Terminal window showing the completed process

Connect the USB flash drive directly to your Mac.

Open Terminal, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.

Depending on which macOS you downloaded, enter one of the following commands in Terminal. Each command assumes that the installer is in your Applications folder, and MyVolume is the name of the USB flash drive. If it has a different name, rename it or replace MyVolume in the command as needed.

Sonoma sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ --volume /Volumes/MyVolume

Ventura sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ --volume /Volumes/MyVolume

Monterey sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ --volume /Volumes/MyVolume

Big Sur sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Big\ --volume /Volumes/MyVolume

Catalina sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ --volume /Volumes/MyVolume

Mojave sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ --volume /Volumes/MyVolume

High Sierra sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ High\ --volume /Volumes/MyVolume

El Capitan sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ --volume /Volumes/MyVolume --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\

When prompted, type your administrator password. Terminal doesn't show any characters as you type. Then press Return.

When prompted, type Y to confirm that you want to erase the volume, then press Return. Terminal shows the progress as the volume is erased. If Terminal can't erase successfully, use Disk Utility to erase the volume using Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, then start again from the beginning.

After the volume is erased, you might see an alert that Terminal would like to access files on a removable volume. Click OK to allow the copy to proceed.

When Terminal says that the install media is now available, the volume will have the same name as the installer, such as Install macOS Sonoma. You can now quit Terminal and eject the volume.

Follow the appropriate steps based on whether the Mac on which you’re installing macOS is a Mac with Apple silicon .

Mac with Apple silicon

Shut down or turn off the Mac.

Connect the bootable installer to the Mac.

This Mac must be compatible with the macOS that you're installing. If it isn't, it might start up to a circle with a line through it .

This Mac must be able connect to the internet. A bootable installer doesn't download macOS, but it does need an internet connection to get firmware and other information for this Mac model.

Turn on the Mac and continue to hold the power button until you see the startup options window , which shows your bootable volumes, including the bootable installer.

Select the bootable installer, then click Continue.

When the macOS installer opens, follow the onscreen installation instructions.

Any other Mac

This Mac must be able to connect to the internet. A bootable installer doesn't download macOS, but it does need an internet connection to get firmware and other information for this Mac model.

Turn on the Mac, then immediately press and hold the Option (Alt) key.

Release the Option key when you see a dark screen showing your bootable volumes, including the bootable installer.

Select the bootable installer. Then click the onscreen arrow or press Return.

If you're using a Mac with the Apple T2 Security Chip and you can't start up from the bootable installer, make sure that Startup Security Utility is set to allow booting from external or removable media.

Choose your language, if prompted.

Select Install macOS (or Install OS X) from the Utilities window, then click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions.

If the Mac you're using to create the bootable installer is using macOS Sierra or earlier, append --applicationpath to your command, followed by the appropriate installer path, similar to what is shown at the end of the command for El Capitan.

For more information about the createinstallmedia command and the arguments you can use with it, make sure that the macOS installer is in your Applications folder, then enter the following in Terminal, replacing InstallerName with the name of the installer: "/Applications/” . Example: "/Applications/Install macOS”.

Microsoft windows should now be updated after cisa july 4 cutoff.

Update deadline is fast approaching

Updated June 29 with details of a restart loop impacting some Windows 11 users.

Timing is everything—and that’s especially true for the millions of Microsoft Windows users with a fast-approaching July 4 deadline to update their systems.

It’s just two weeks ago that we saw a patched Windows vulnerability come back to life. While Microsoft had suggested no known exploits for CVE-2024-26169, Symantec’s security researchers thought somewhat differently, with “some evidence” that attackers “compiled a CVE-2024-26169 exploit prior to patching.”

And it’s just last month that several U.S. government agencies—including CISA and the FBI—collaborated on a Cybersecurity Advisory warning that “Black Basta affiliates have impacted a wide range of businesses and critical infrastructure in North America, Europe, and Australia. As of May 2024, Black Basta affiliates have impacted over 500 organizations globally.”

Black Basta is a Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) group that has targeted “12 out of 16 critical infrastructure sectors,” the agencies said, “including the Healthcare and Public Health (HPH) Sector.” But the group’s activities have extended well beyond the public sector, hitting the likes of Hyundai, Rheinmetall, Capita and ABB.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Timing is everything. And these stories come together—somewhat awkwardly for Microsoft—because Symantec suggested it was “the Cardinal cybercrime group (aka Storm-1811, UNC4393), which operates the Black Basta ransomware” that was likely exploiting the privilege escalation vulnerability in Microsoft’s Windows Error Reporting Service for several weeks before it was patched in March.

CISA has added CVE-2024-26169 to its Known Exploit Vulnerability ( KEV ) catalog, flagging that it is “known to be used in ransomware campaigns” and mandating all Windows systems be updated or shut down by July 4. That mandate only applies to US federal agencies, but CISA says it “strongly urges all organizations to reduce their exposure to cyberattacks by prioritizing timely remediation.”

Black Basta has now generated significantly more than $100 million in ransomware payments, and so leaving Windows systems unpatched is a gamble no organization should take. All should follow CISA’s July 4 update mandate. While the specific issue here is less relevant to personal users, update right away if you haven’t done so.

Since this article was published, the situation for Windows 11 users has been complicated by spreading news of an unexpected restart loop impacting some users installing June’s Windows 11 KB5039302.

Microsoft has warned users that “after installing updates released June 26, 2024 ( KB5039302 ), some devices might fail to start,” advising that “affected systems might restart repeatedly and require recovery operations in order to restore normal use.”

Don’t be alarmed by these headlines and proceed to update as usual.

KB5039302 is not a mandatory update in itself and is not a security update—as such, put those headlines aside and proceed as normal. Do not confuse this update with the security patching that resolves the Microsoft Windows Error Reporting Service vulnerability. In any case, it’s highly likely that your Windows 11 PC will be unaffected by the new issue. This restart loop impacts enterprise machines running “virtual machines tools and nested virtualization features,” Microsoft has said, which means home users are less likely to be hit. Users will still see relevant updates as available.

The issues covered by CISA’s warning were patched ahead of June’s release, and given the Black Basta angle, the urgency remains. And that means that while Microsoft may have pulled KB5039302 for some users, you should still ensure you update your PC ahead of the July 4 deadline.

The much bigger issue that does impact Windows home users is now fast approaching, albeit that deadline is still more than a year away on October 14, 2025. Just days before Symantec’s report, we saw Microsoft again urging Windows 10 users to upgrade to Windows 11. With a daunting 70% of users yet to make the switch ahead of next year’s end-of-life, that challenge is becoming ever more acute and Microsoft’s nags have started to hit PCs worldwide.

When Windows 10 goes end-of-life it also goes end-of-support. No more security updates for users unwilling to upgrade or pay a new and expensive annual fee.

And so to all those corporate and personal Windows 10 holdouts. “It’s time to upgrade your PC before end of support,” Microsoft urges. “End of support for Windows arrives on October 14, 2025. This means your desktop won’t receive technical support or security updates after that date.”

And that’s simply not a risk worth taking—certainly not with Windows.
