“offering free tours”

SIA offers FREE public tours Monday-Friday at 9 a.m, customized to suit your group?s needs and interests. Your guided tour is led by an SIA Tour Director with an in-depth knowledge about every facet of the company.  Just inside the plant's front doors, the tour begins with an historical overview of Subaru and SIA and a look at our model line-up.  The one-mile walking tour of production starts on the second floor gallery with a peek into different sections of the Paint Shop.  Then you?ll follow the elevated catwalk through the heart of the Stamping Shop. This unique overhead look allows you to appreciate the impressive scale and power of the presses that are used to cut and form raw steel into parts like side panels, doors and hoods. Just beyond the stamping shop, the tour will continue through the Body Shop. Here, you?ll gaze across a sea of robots as they lift and position parts and weld them together with precise accuracy.  Next, you?ll enter Trim & Final, where you?ll witness the final installation process. Along the catwalk, you?ll follow the car as the engine and axle are installed. Then you?ll see the tires, doors and each of the interior components being added.  Finally, you?ll see the finished vehicle being driven off the line, through a battery of quality control tests in IPC and out the door for delivery.  So whether your interest is in lean manufacturing, positive environmental practices or simply watching a Subaru being built from coil to car under one roof, you?ll find your visit both educational and enjoyable.

Made in America: a visit to SIA in Lafayette, Indiana

COOL! Although I'm sure a few new outback owners wouldnt mind some trash in a landfill in trade for a car that doesnt shake at 70mph. I like what they stand for though. Build it right here right now.

FWIW, I drove a 2010 for a few days. (It was hired.) Smooth as could be up to 100 mph, which was as high as I went. And this was after several hours of off-roading. There may be a few lemons falling from the tree, but I suspect the shaking issue is pretty rare.

subaru factory tours lafayette indiana

Beautiful!

Side note Subaru is working on a India production facility as are all the major makers its sort of a race over there given the auto market is on the verge of exploding. I have many friends and co-workers over there who are predicting Subaru to be one of the best selling cars given it fits the nature of the country very well. MB has sold their top fancy SUV's over there for years only they get 16inch wheels and full on 4X4 Tires and full size spares sold standard here in the US we get soft squishy 18+inch wheels and either zero spare or a semi inflated spare HA HA.. As for Indiana I have family there its what we call a special place. If it were not for Indiana we would not have all the cheap camp trailers and toys everyone loves to own- and I'm sure our national unemployment would be a few points higher without a special place such as Indiana for some folks to live ;-)

Wow. Taxmen have never been popular, but serving papers the night before his mother's funeral, and threatening to separate him from his wife and son for (potentially) several years, is pretty aggressive. Interesting indeed. Thanks for the compliment, by the way.

Nice write up....Live in Indiana for 4 yrs...nice place, great friendly Hoosiers ....well, maybe except the Fighting Irish fans!

subaru factory tours lafayette indiana

Great writeup! I really hope to visit this factory, I think it would be a great experience. I would love to be able to see where my Outback was made.

subaru factory tours lafayette indiana

Nice writeup - I did the tour this past spring and this captures the essence of my visit as well.

This thread was written several years ago. Anyone have a more recent experience different than this one? Thanks!

subaru factory tours lafayette indiana

I heard they can not make make enough to keep up with demand. So they will super-size the plant with expansion projects. Pretty cool they make all Outback and Legacy's for North America market here.

We also make the Impreza also and the new Viziv-7 coming to production this fall

subaru factory tours lafayette indiana

http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums...-subaru-ascent-3-row-suv-viziv-7-concept.html somewhere it has been stated that subaru copyrighted / trademarked the name "Ascent" recently. here is the thread on that subject. _____ what cars are you driving now, and what have you owned before.? _________ and welcome to the board. :welcome2:

Hi tmr199991, I totally understand if you're not allowed to answer questions like this, so feel free not to, but I'm wondering if the different models of vehicles are still made on the same production line, or if there's tools/equipment used on the Impreza that might also be used for Outback production? I know Subaru won't release any official information anytime soon, but I've read the the new "Subaru Global Platform" is designed to be modular, so I guess I had a very faint hope that if the factory is tooled to use the new platform in the Impreza productions, and maybe the new Crosstreks coming out (?), that there might be hope of the Outback landing on that platform for the 2018 model year? Might be wishful thinking, but sometimes it doesn't hurt to wish. . . .

subaru factory tours lafayette indiana

There are basically 2 separate lines. Legacy and Outback is on one and Impreza and Outback on the other. I think the 7 passenger will be put on the Legacy and Outback line and more Outbacks will be moved to the Impreza line. Not sure how many 7 passenger vehicles they plan on selling. 2018 Outback will not be a new platform. Probably more like 2020 MY.

I used to work as a Paint Manufacturing Engineer at SIA back when we were launching the new Outback and Legacy. What a crazy (awesome) place to work! If you have any questions about the paint process that I can answer, I'd be happy to!

subaru factory tours lafayette indiana

I have hauled freight in and out of that area directly surrounding the plant for years. One time several years ago actually hauled into the plant. I can confirm all the stuff about the environmentally conscious the place is and the certified wildlife habitat right on the property. I was fascinated by that at the time. Impressive.

I'm not convinced the quality control is top notch. I understand this is mass manufacturing but I have seen some issues on cars from that plant I have purchased

subaru factory tours lafayette indiana

dzehner2 - Whose paint did/is used? I worked for an OEM coatings manufacturer in Greenville, Ohio, for several years (BASF) and we painted several manufacturers including Nissan, several GM models, Ford, VW, BMW and one batch a year for Rolls-Royce. We produced the entire system of E-coat, base, color and clear.

  • The place is massive
  • No cameras or cell phones allowed.
  • The tour guide works in the HR department and really know’s what she is talking about. I was impressed with how much she knew about the entire line.
  • There are two assembly lines
  • The Ascent and the Outback are made on the same line at the same time. I imagined that they would build one type of car at a time and then stop the line and switch to another. That’s not the case at all. Outbacks and Ascents are intermixed on the line at the same time seamlessly.
  • We got to see - paint, die stamping of sheet metal, engine and front drivetrain coming together, robot welding line, dash assembly, main assembly line, QC final inspection area

Wow, thanks for sharing those! My next stop on my road trip is the next day, and only a few hours away. It will be nice to have things to do in between.

Featured products, subaru of indiana automotive: produces its 5 millionth subaru vehicle (lafayette).

Automaker’s only manufacturing facility outside of Japan reaches milestone in 35 th year

Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) has produced its 5 millionth Subaru vehicle, a 2022 Outback Wilderness in Geyser Blue. The milestone comes during the company’s 35 th anniversary year.

“Reaching our 35 th anniversary and 5 million Subaru vehicles in the same year provides a great opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come,” said Scott Brand, SIA executive vice president. “I’m especially proud of our associates and the way they continuously meet our customers’ expectations for safe, quality vehicles.”

SIA is Subaru’s only manufacturing facility outside of Japan and currently makes the Ascent, Impreza, Legacy and Outback models. It produces about half of all Subaru vehicles sold in North America.

At the time of its incorporation in Indiana on March 17, 1987, the Lafayette plant was a joint venture between Subaru and Isuzu. When production began on Sept. 11, 1989, the Subaru Legacy and Isuzu Pickup were both built at the plant.

In the years that followed, the factory continued to produce Subaru models in addition to other vehicles, including the Isuzu Rodeo, Honda Passport and Toyota Camry. However, the plant has exclusively produced Subaru vehicles since June 2016.

“Our associates should take tremendous pride in this achievement,” said Brand. “Along with the entire auto industry, the SIA team has persevered through more than two years of supply chain issues and production disruptions while maintaining a focus on quality.”

Production of the all-new 2023 Legacy and the all-new 2023 Outback is scheduled to begin this week. SIA currently expects to produce its 7 millionth overall vehicle in December.
