  • Many of the facilities are situated at the Grand Palladium next door
  • Some complaints of poolside lounge chairs getting snapped up early

Bottom Line

The luxury TRS Coral is an adults-only, all-inclusive property with 469 chic rooms, all with either hydro-therapy tubs or swim-up access. It’s situated on a wide stretch of white sand beach in Playa Mujeres, a relatively quiet resort area north of Cancun’s busy Hotel Zone. Highlights of a stay here include a generous all-inclusive plan with free food and drinks at multiple bars, buffets, and a la carte restaurants plus round-the-clock room service. One of the best perks here is the free night at Chic Cabaret, for amazing performances and gourmet multi-course meals. Guests of TRS Coral also get access to the facilities at the family-friendly Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres Resort & Spa next door, where the Zentropia wellness center — with a spa, hydrotherapy circuit, and a great gym — is located. Travelers looking for a more intimate adults-only alternative could also consider the nearby Beloved Playa Mujeres , which features an incredible spa but considerably fewer rooms.

Oyster Hotel Review

A classy adults-only, all-inclusive resort with a mix of quiet and lively atmospheres.

The atmosphere at TRS Coral is upscale and mature, owing both to its adults-only policy and its location away from the party scene further south in Cancun. The whole place has a bit of a retro vibe, with a small lobby featuring polished black-marble floors and lots of gold and silver furnishings and accents plus open grounds with palm trees, large stone pathways, and plenty of small tropical shrubs. Most guests here are couples looking for quiet, though the resort does host weddings and the occasional business group, too. It's not all sedate though. Shows at Chic Cabaret are lively and the pool is a hub of activity and bumping music throughout the daylight hours.

In posh Playa Mujeres, a 40-minute drive from the airport in Cancun

TRS Coral Hotel is situated right on the beach in Playa Mujeres, about a 40-minute drive north of Cancun’s Hotel Zone. The immediate area is dominated by other high-end hotels, but the resorts in this area are a bit more spread out than in the main part of Playa Mujeres, a short walk south. The Playa Mujeres Golf Club is a seven-minute drive from the hotel. It's about a 15-minute drive to the Punta Sam jetty, the departure point for boats to Isla Mujeres. From the TRS Coral to Cancun International Airport takes 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic.

Sharp and a bit vintage, with swim-up options or terraces featuring jetted tubs

TRS Coral's rooms are sharp, with a calmingly neutral decor scheme featuring cream-colored marble floors and coordinating walls. Expect mid-century modern-style sofas and chairs in pale grays and beiges, plus a few colorful accents in the form of blue and aqua art prints. Wooden paneling on accent walls gives the spaces a bit of a vintage vibe. Bathrooms feature a similar aesthetic, with recessed lighting, large soaking tubs (and separate walk-in showers), and double vanities with vessel sinks and retro-style hexagonal mirrors with back lighting.

Amenities found across TRS Coral rooms include low beds with memory foam mattresses and pillow menus, terraces or balconies with hydro-massage tubs (or direct pool access in the case of swim-up rooms), huge flat-screen TVs, minibars with premium liquor (included in the all-inclusive plan), Nespresso machines, kettles for making tea, and free Wi-Fi.

The TRS Coral Loft Suite is a good choice for those who want some extra space, with a separate lounge area, while the even larger Ambassador Suite adds second toilets plus hammocks on the terraces.

From high-end dining to free dinners and entertainment at Chic Cabaret and a lively pool

The star feature at TRS Coral is its beautiful white-sand beach, which doesn’t garner many seaweed complaints. It's connected to the main part of the hotel via a wooden walkway and features lounge chairs with umbrellas, beach beds, and plenty of white sand. There's also a fair bit of room to lounge around the main pool, with single and double lounge chairs plus submerged loungers, though some guests have noted that you have to get up early to reserve a space.

The all-inclusive plan at TRS Coral Hotel is generous, and includes 24-hour room service along with all snacks, drinks, and meals at the hotel's seven different restaurants. Along with two buffets, the resort offers Thai, Indian, Italian, and Japanese a la carte restaurants plus an Argentinian steak house. Certain dining options are reserved only for TRS guests, including Helios. You'll also receive a multi-course gourmet dinner and amazing entertainment at Chic Cabaret.

TRS Coral has a beach club and 18 bars, including a 24-hour sports bar. It’s important to note that many of the TRS Coral’s facilities are actually located at the Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres Resort & Spa next door, and thus aren’t adults-only. This goes for some of the restaurants as well as the wellness facilities.

Fitness and spa facilities are situated inside the Zentropia Spa and Wellness Center at the Palladium and include a gorgeous hydrotherapy circuit that guests are welcome to use so long as they've booked a treatment (Palladium Travel Club members get free access). The gym here is modern and well-equipped with cardio and weight-training machines, and there's a tennis center with eight clay courts with instruction available.

While many of the guests here are vacationers, there's also plenty for business groups and small conventions, with a conference center that can be split into up to six different conference rooms. The resort also has wedding services, with a variety of packages available. Free on-site underground parking is available and Wi-Fi is free throughout the resort.

Rates can vary widely by room type and season. "We Paid" is intended to give a general sense of price, but you might find considerably different rates for your trip.

When we book, we aim for the optimum season for the destination, but we avoid holidays and major public events, when prices are highest. We generally book a room at one category up from the most basic.

We take advantage of promotional rates, when possible. That means the rate you see above might have included other benefits, such as spa or meal credits.

TRS Yucatan Hotel

Set at the quiet southern end of Mexico’s sublime Riviera Maya, TRS Yucatan Hotel provides a posh all-inclusive, adults-only escape. From the moment you set foot into the marble lobby, with its soaring palapa roof and contemporary design, you’ll feel transported.

Premium drinks flow throughout the resort’s bars, while six upscale restaurants serve craveable international cuisine. Spectacular vistas of the property’s lagoon, the Caribbean Sea or the three scenic pools greet you at every turn, while the mangroves and tropical gardens create a lush natural setting for a high-end getaway.

TRS Yucatan forms part of the Palladium hotel complex, affording you all-inclusive access to the beaches, restaurants and bars of several other surrounding resorts — not that you’d want to leave your prime perch. At TRS, room sizes start at an impressive 645 square feet, while the array of amenities and personalized services will leave you feeling like a VIP on your Riviera Maya getaway.

  • Three very different pool areas are scattered throughout the property, each with its own feel. Helios Beach Club boasts tiered infinity pools by the ocean, the quiet La Terraza pool is surrounded by palm trees at the center of the resort and Las Rocas is a saltwater swimming hole that blends with the Caribbean Sea among the coastal rocks.
  • The “Infinite Indulgence” all-inclusive plan lives up to its name, covering gratis amenities like six bars serving premium drinks (plus top-shelf bottles in your room), personalized butler service, Wi-Fi and, of course, all your meals. The seemingly boundless perks carry over into the resort's a la carte entertainment offerings as well, including complimentary activities such as sink hole-diving and snorkeling, yacht rentals, archery lessons, Spanish classes and visits to the onsite crocodile nursery.
  • On arrival, you’ll receive access to an exclusive app that allows you to order golf cart shuttle service right to your door, request bath preparation, make spa reservations or even stream your favorite shows and movies poolside.
  • With the Dine Around program, you’ll have all-inclusive access to the three neighboring resorts on the Palladium complex (including their pools, bars, entertainment and restaurants), while TRS Yucatan Hotel remains exclusive.
  • The resort’s Zentropia Palladium Spa & Wellness center possesses Mayan-inspired details mingled with contemporary design. And access to the juice bar, fitness center, outdoor pool and extensive hydrotherapy area come with your TRS stay.
  • TRS Yucatan Hotel has a dazzling rocky coastline, but no sandy beach; however, the resort’s shuttle can take you to an exclusive TRS beach club area, complete with waiter service and Bali beds, on the other side of the Palladium complex.
  • This Riviera Maya hotel is very walkable, with wide paths among the villas and wooden walkways through the mangroves and over the lagoon. Crossing the property from the lobby to the ocean takes only 10 minutes on foot.
  • The three pools offer a calming and quiet adults-only ambiance, while the five swimming holes at the complex’s other resorts have games, music and families with kids.
  • To stay active, you’ll find oceanfront yoga every morning, as well as water sports like windsurfing or snorkeling on the beach on the other side of the complex, all included.
  • This all-suite resort’s oversized accommodations carry a warm, contemporary style. Decked out in a chic mix of gold, taupe and black tones, the rooms get pops of color from bright details, like throw pillows and blankets.
  • Even the standard room amenities are high on luxury, with personalized butler service, memory-foam mattresses, hydro-massage tubs, 50-inch TVs and gratis minibars.
  • Want to take a dip in the comfort of your own room? Book one of the Junior Suite Private Pools to enjoy a swim in a secluded 86-square-foot marble plunge.
  • Nature lovers, or couples looking for a little extra privacy, should book the Romance Bungalow, with memorable perks like an outdoor Mayan-inspired shower, wooden hammocks and a lagoon-front terrace with a landing for your very own kayak.
  • Each day at the all-inclusive hotel begins at Capricho, where an extensive menu of American and Mexican breakfast favorites — ranging from waffles and bagels to enchiladas and chilaquiles — is served daily. Sunrise staples are accompanied by a row of tasting tables, like a juice bar, a fruit station, a carving table and more.
  • Indulge in a divine oceanfront lunch at Helios every day, with a mix of buffet and à la carte service, shaded outdoor seating and live music. Each evening, the eatery offers a menu of Mediterranean favorites to enjoy in spectacular beachside surroundings.
  • Get dressed up for dinner at the resort’s three stylish theme restaurants: Tentazione for Italian cuisine, La Bohème for French recipes and El Gaucho for an Argentine steakhouse experience.
  • To indulge in dinner and a show, make a reservation at Chic Cabaret. The vibrant performance takes you back in time to the Moulin Rouge in Paris and the old cabarets of Berlin for a one-of-a-kind dining experience.

Traveler’s guide to the city of Omsk, Western Siberia’s secret gem

travel club trs

Omsk was founded in 1716 when a wooden fort was constructed to house a Cossack unit in the area to protect the expanding Russian frontier from Central Asian nomadic incursions. It served various administrative functions throughout the 1800s and became infamous as a place of exile and incarceration. The city was rundown when selected as a hub for the Trans-Siberian railway in the 1890s. Many international trade companies and foreign consulates relocated here and the remnants of their offices can still be found in the city today.

The mystery of Kolchak’s gold

travel club trs

Kolchak was entrusted with a large portion of the Tsarist’s gold reserves, yet amazingly lost much of it. Supposedly 250 million rubles were lost (about $8 million at the time). Legend has it that they were buried near the village of Taiga, yet numerous excavations have turned up nothing. The area still attracts the occasional fortune seeker.

Kolchak’s headquarters are located at what is today the Omsk Regional Archives at Broz Tito St., 3. Nothing shows how much times have changed as the imposing Kolchak statue that was unveiled in 2012 around the corner. The statue guards Kolchak restaurant , a four-story culinary complex featuring a steak house, an Irish pub, a Central Asian café and an Italian eatery.  For more details on where and how to dig Kolchak's gold, see Top Ten Mysterious Lost Treasures of Russia

Dostoevsky and the Tsar

travel club trs

Most foreigners have heard of Omsk via writer Fyodor Dostoevsky who spent four years here as a prisoner (1849-1853). He spent most of his time in Omsk in squalor and chains and with no books besides the Bible, however, it left an indelible mark on his memory and influenced his future literary output. There is a statue of the writer in chains grasping a Bible at the corner of Partizanskaya and Spartakovskaya streets, where Dostoevsky undoubtedly stepped many times. A museum dedicated to the author's time in Omsk is located nearby at Dostoevskogo St. 1. The local university is also named for him.

Tarskaya Street is one of the city’s oldest thoroughfares. It features a monument to victims of Stalinist repressions and the Tara gates, originally built in 1792 as one of the four entrances to the Omsk fort. Nearby stands the Assumption Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Siberia. Future Tsar Nicholas II laid the first stone here in 1891 when making his way back to St. Petersburg after his Eastern journey.

In Omsk you are never more than a few steps from the village, made clear when one exits the center to the north, where most houses are wooden and roads unpaved. Stroll along Bulatova and Rabinovicha streets, a well-preserved ensemble of wooden architecture.

Omsk’s cultural heritage

travel club trs

One of Omsk’s most famous sons is Symbolist painter Mikhail Vrubel (1856-1910). Vrubel ignored contemporary trends and focused on themes from fairy tales, demons and religious subjects and also designed a majolica frieze for the Metropol Hotel in Moscow. Omsk’s Fine Arts Museum is named for him and features a number of his works .

Over the years a number of tourists have tripped over the monument to Stepanych. This bust of a plumber rising from a sewer was the idea of Omsk’s former mayor after a trip to Slovakia in the 1990s. Stepanych has become one of the symbols of the city.

Omsk is a hockey town, with one of the major teams, Avangard , in the KHL, Russia’s premiere professional league. Russian champions on several occasions, check out a match at Omsk Arena. But if you can’t catch a game there’s a large kiosk featuring the team’s merchandise at the airport.

Siberian punk, jazz and the classics

travel club trs

Perhaps Russia’s most famous punk band, Grazhdanskaya oborona (Civil Defence), was formed here in 1982. The band was active until 2008 when lead singer Yegor Letov died of heart failure at age 43. Letov is buried at the Staro-Vostochnoe cemetery. A sprawling graveyard with thousands of graves, fans should stop at the administration for help in locating his grave.

One of Omsk’s longest running live music venues is Jazz Cafe Party Piano . With live jazz and rock every night of the month, it’s legendary throughout Siberia. Take a taxi as it’s hard to find. Other options for live music include the Viking Folk Bar and Harat's Pub .

How to get there

The southern and northern branches of the Trans-Siberian Railway converge here with about 10 trains going to or from Moscow on any given day (37-47 hours each way) and many trains travel to and from the Far East (4-5 days) daily. Aeroflot, Transaero, and S7 fly to Moscow daily (3 hours). Less frequent flights connect to Saint Petersburg (3 hours), Krasnoyarsk (2 hours), as well as Frankfurt, Hannover and Köln in Germany (5 hours). For more information check out aeroomsk.ru
