Latest reviews of Volcano Night Lava Viewing Tours

Didn't see the lava show, but still was amazing.

This is one of the best tour I had, the driver always take care of you even if you Re late lol. But it was an amazing experience you can meet new people and have a great time, I would do it again when I come back to ko ... more na!

Worth the money for sure!

We really enjoyed this tour. It is a long one so be prepared. But they keep you hydrated and fed. I loved the black sand beach, and the sea turtles and the stop along the shore the most. But all of the events were really ... more fun. They packed so much into one day. it was a great tour and we had a lot of fun. The picnic, the stop at the bakery, and the dinner, you were all excellent quality as well.

Great day in Hawaii!

It was a great days long adventures around the island. I would highly recommend it!

Amazing Tour Guide!

The perfect experience for first time visiting Kona! Loved the Coffee farm, black sand beach, and stargazing the most on this full-day excursion!

Fabulous Trip

This tour was the highlight of my families trip. The tour was amazing and our guide was knowledgeable and friendly. He was happy to answer all of my children's questions.

MUST DO! This was a great tour - really educational and fun. Be prepared for rain, you are in the rainforest and it rains a lot. Our guide came prepared with umbrellas and rain jackets, flashlights for the lava tube, ... more water and snacks. Andre, our tour guide was amazing, experienced and incredibly knowlegable of the volcanoes, land, plants and trees, Hawaiian culture, plus more, and the history of all mentioned. He made sure we were always entertained during the approx. 8 hour trip. Would recommend shorts, closed toed shoes (sneakers fine) suntan lotion, somewhat water repellant light jacket (in case your tour does not provide).

The Best Volcano Tours in Hawaii

By Hawaii.com Team

Facebook

If you’re looking to see lava, your best (and safest) bet is to book a Hawaii volcano tour. The best ways to see lava on the Big Island are by boat, by helicopter or by hiking across the dry lava fields. Keep in mind that, because you’re dealing with mother nature, lava viewings are not guaranteed and certain safety risks do exist. Check with tour operators or call 808-985-6000 for recorded updates of volcanic activity. That being said, here are the best volcano tours in Hawaii to get you safely to Pele’s red hot molten lava!

Lava Ocean Tours

Lava Ocean Tours will take you out on the water in the only US Coast Guard inspected lava boat, the LAVAONE, which offers the Big Island’s best lava boat tour! Get up close and feel the heat and hear the sizzle of molten lava flowing into the ocean. The best time of day to witness this wonder is early morning before sunrise or at sunset. However, no matter the time of day, you will be watching as a new earth is formed on the Big Island. Passengers must be 4-75 years old, under 250 pounds, and in good health.

Hawaii Volcano Tours by Helicopter

Paradise Helicopters> offers a ride over the most active parts of the Kilauea volcano. This 40-50 minute ride will have you feeling the heat and then cooling down as you fly over some of the island’s magical waterfalls. This Big Island volcano tour is offered with or without doors!

Hike to See the Lava Flow

Hawaii Forest & Trail offers a guided 2-3 mile hike of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park’s most dynamic terrain with a National Park Certified Guide. Along with the hike, you will also explore a private lava tube complete with bright yellow and gold microbial mats. Guides provide gear, food, and drinks as well as insights into the history and legends of the volcano.

Volcano Air Tour from Kapalua, Maui

If you’re staying on the island of Maui and looking for a tour that will take you to see the volcano, check out Mokuele Air Tours departing from Kapalua, Maui. Though the highlight is the southern lava tubes of Hawaii Island where lava often flows into the sea, you will also get to see picturesque parts of Maui, cross the Alenuihaha channel and fly over stunning coastlines and mountains on Hawaii Island.

Not All Hawaii Volcano Tours Will Take You to See Lava

There are a lot of volcano tours on Hawaii Island, but not all of them will take you to see the lava flowing into the ocean. Most volcano tours will take you sightseeing around the island and on a trip through Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. But, this does not necessarily mean you will see the lava flow.

Big Island Volcano Day Trip from Another Island

The source of lava is the Kilauea volcano which is located on the southeastern coast of Hawaii Island, also known as the Big Island. If you’re visiting Hawaii but staying on an island other than Big Island, it might be worth it to book an inter-island flight over for a day trip. The two main airports on the island are the Kona International Airport (KOA) and the Hilo International Airport (ITO). If you’re flying to the Big Island and renting a car, keep in mind that the Hilo Airport is closer to the lava than the Kona Airport is. However, it’s still about an hour drive to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from Hilo, so be sure to get an early start and plan accordingly. Some tours will offer airport pick-up, just check your tour details or call the company.

Life As We Explore

Sunrise lava boat tour - an amazing experience in hawaii.

An amazing way to witness the dramatic spectacle of steam, boiling water and explosive lava as red hot lava enters the water is by taking a boat tour. This incredible trip comes with an expensive price tag. Despite the price tag, early wake-up and a rough boat ride, there is no guarantee that you will see the lava flow because it is unpredictable. But if you are lucky to witness it then this will be the most epic experience of your life worth every penny.

Lava Boat Tour, Hawaii

Kilauea Volcano on the island of Hawaii is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. It has been erupting continuously sending molten lava downhill through tubes, fissures, cracks and into the sea. People from all over the world travel to Hawaii for an up-close experience with the red hot lava. A helicopter tour, a boat tour, a long hike and a bike tour are some of the ways to get a look at the lava. In this post we are talking about our sunrise boat tour experience in Hawaii.

Stream of lava

Our tour company: Kalapana Cultural Tours was our first and only choice mainly for their small 6 seater boats. We booked the combined boat and bike/hike tour with them. It was an expensive trip but in the end completely worth the money we paid.

Read about our Lava bike/hike tour here .

Small 6 passenger boat

Boat launch: We arrived at Isaac Hale Beach Park at 4:15am, 30 mins before our tour departure time. That meant we had to wake up around 2 am to be able to make it on time from Volcano. Most of the boat tours depart from the pohoiki boat ramp at the park. Once all 6 tourists had assembled we took our seats on the boat along with our captain and guide. We were given some instructions and lifevests (optional) before we were on our way into the open dark ocean. Not gonna lie, it was scary.

Note: Check for illegal boat tour operators before you book your tour. Also these tours are very dangerous and have potentially life threatening risks.

Boat launch area / View from park

Cliff views from the boat ramp

Cruising the ocean: According to our guide the sea was calm that morning. If that was calm we can't imagine what it is like when its rough and we have no desire to find out either. Since it was an open boat we felt very unsafe the whole time. We were on a rollercoaster ride with no seat belts to keep us secured. The ocean rocked us back and forth, threw us up and about. We did dose up on Dramamine before our tour and the night before, which didn't seem to be helping much at that point. Fortunately for us and our company on the boat, we didn't have any hurling accidents.

Views: Sun slowly rose behind us somewhat hidden under the clouds. The views of golden sunrise, eerie looking volcanic cliffs and the endless dark ocean was simply breathtaking. Our guide was very knowledgable about the volcano and island's history in general, about the cliffs and which year they were formed, old lava tubes and the beaches we came across. They were all more clearly visible on our way back.

Other tour boats

Lava tube / Our first view of the lava

Lava ocean entry: After 45 mins of rough cruising we arrived at the most dramatic lava ocean entry scene. It was magical. Lighting was just perfect for the lava to glow. The red hot lava exploded and puffed up steam upon contact with the ocean water. Lava instantly solidified and formed what the locals call "Hawaiian icebergs" that slowly sank into the ocean. We were pretty close to the lava, may be only few 100 ft away, so we could feel the heat. Our guide urged us to bend over the boat and feel the water (after he checked first), it was around 90 degrees. We couldn't smell the sulphur may be because of the direction of the wind. There were only 3 other boats at the spot so there was no rush in giving way.

Lava ocean entry / Hawaiian Icebergs - Lava chunks

Red hot molten lava

Bonus on our way back: We spent 30mins at the site before turning around. Our ride back was 10 times rougher than on our way in. We got splashed a few times but not so much to be soaking wet. The views were more clear and beautiful. We saw not one not two but 3 rainbows, at the same time. That doesn't happen very often. Suddenly our boat came to a halt and voila... Dolphins!!! A school of dolphins played around our boat and entertained us. Unfortunately, we couldn't get pictures of the rainbows nor dolphins because of the rough ride.

Conclusion: Besides the fact that we could have been severely sea sick or could have possibly returned with a broken back, this is one of the most unforgettable experiences of our lives. It is so worth the risks taken and the money spent as this could be our once in a lifetime trip.

Useful information:

Where to stay: We stayed in a  vacation rental  in Volcano town close to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Check out  other options . For accommodations closer  check here . Getting there: The boat ramp is located in Isaac Hale Beach Park in Pahoa on the southeast side of BIg Island. It is better to follow the directions given by the tour company as that is more precise than following a GPS. Tour operator: Kalapana Cultural Tours  company offers different tours and combinations. Check their website for accurate information. Cost and times: Ours was a combined boat and bike tour - $280 + tax/person. Sunrise tours are generally more than the day tours. Please check their website for information. Precautions: It can be somewhat chilly in the early hours of the day, so dress in layers. Take your sea sickness meds. If you have any health issues it is better to consult your doctor before planning this trip. Facilities: There are restrooms at the park but none on the boat. There is no food at the park but there are many options in Pahoa. Things to do in the area: Lava Tree State Monument , Kehena Beach, Kaimu Beach Park and Lava hikes .

I would recommend this tour to anyone wanting to get up close and personal with Lava! I have to say it was one of the best tours I have EVER done!

We had a fantastic guide Matthew guiding our group. He had us up early hiking out over the lava flows to the most active parts, and we were lucky to have a major flow erupt right by us while we were exploring.

To put it succinctly: the guides (Jon and Jeff) are THE people you want escorting you through the volcanoes. Jon’s energy is contagious, and Jeff’s stories are–literally–legendary. More than just a tour of the area, you get a tour through time, with personal stories that help color the experience. I would recommend these guys to anyone who has a real interest in experiencing the history, not just looking at the land. Thanks, guys!

Epic Lava has most experienced and friendly guides. They shared many stories of their experiences and they even helped us take amazing photos.

FAQs [ show ]

Q: Lava Ocean Adventures? A. We’re Hawaii’s, Big Island ocean adventure tour company. The Lava Ocean crew consists of long time Hawaii residents who have boated here in East Hawaii for years.

Q: Where do we meet for the Kilauea volcano lava tour? A. Meet at the Isaac Hale Beach Park. See driving directions below.

Q: Lava Boat Tours vs. Helicopter Volcano Tours? A. Both are great Hawaii tours it really depends on what type of volcano tours your interested in. Lava Boat Tours are geared toward the adventure seeker. We Hear the sizzle as the lava touches the sea, we Feel the molten heat , we See red hot lava & we Experience open ocean boating conditions. Helicopter volcano tours can be a good way to view the crater & lava action up the mountain with views from a 1000+ ft. If your looking to get up close to lava then volcano boat tours offer you the ultimate close up lava viewing experience with views from a 100 yards. When lava touches the sea, a plume cloud begins extending into the sky, blocking ocean lava viewing from the Helicopter & Kalapana lava viewing center. The unobstructed facing view of lava is by far the best way to view lava & a trademark of lava ocean tours. After years of lava touring when lava’s touching the sea there’s nowhere we’d rather be, then on a lava boat!

Q: Is the boat we are touring with comfortable and safe? A. Lava Ocean Adventures offers 3 of the safest most equipped lava boats. Our boat captains are United States Coast Guard licensed, our vessels are permitted through the state of Hawaii, & we carry insurance for all of our passengers. We look forward to making our Hawaii Lava Tour a part of your Big Vacation.

Q: When is the best time to view lava by boat? A. Usually the Sunrise Lava Tour is the best. Due to the golden rays of sun lighting the lava, creating a visual spectacle. On a calm night the Sunset Lava Tour can be exciting too, with vibrant lava afterglows. Then again, we have photographers that love the early Afternoon Adventure Lava Tours due to the available lighting for pictures. So take your pick lava is lava, come get it while its red hot.

Q: How long are your Kilauea Lava Boat Tours? A: Lava Boat tours generally last 1.75 – 2.5 hours depending on ocean conditions. Lava viewing on our daily scheduled Boat Lava Tour lasts approximately 45 minutes.

Q: Will I see active lava flow? A. You will truly be amazed with whatever Pele is giving us and since is unique we can guarantee your pictures of lava are one of a kind. Lava drips, explodes into the air, flows like a river, glows molten along the bench cracks, and ooze out in little to big blobs. As long as lava is flow into the sea you’ll see lava on every trip.

Q: Can you see lava during the day? A. Yes, Lava is red hot all day long. During certain flow conditions the lighting the daylight provides allows for great lit lava photos.

Q: How long has Hawaii Volcano Kilauea been erupting? A. There has been lava flowing from Kilauea’s vents for over 26 years in the Kalapana area, however lava entering the sea is a rare occurrence and only happens about 25% or less of the time. In recent years this has almost doubled with 2 out of the 3 years of lava entering the sea. We have a 99% chance of seeing lava on every trip. We are all truly blessed to have the world’s most active volcano Kilauea so accessible to us.

Q: What if we get there and there is no lava? A. There is always a chance the lava can stop flowing into the ocean at any time and has happened before. If by chance she quits over night without warning we will gladly give you a Lava Ocean Adventure Shirt or a discount on the price if we do not see red hot lava in any of it‘s forms.

Q: How rough is the water? A. Our 3 catamarans are built for open ocean conditions found here in East Hawaii. This trip is not for everyone!!! We can be out in as high as 4-6’ swells. We will not go out if the wind or sea conditions go beyond what a 4 year old can endure or if lightning or other unforeseen events prevent us from having a safe lava trip. Sometimes this decision is made right before boarding and we will give as much notice as we can, if we are going to cancel a boat trip. Again, your safety is our biggest concern.

Q: What should we bring? A. We want you to be thrilled as well as safe. You can get wet and a rain jacket will make the difference in having a better chance of keeping dry. Please bring a bag or water resistant sack to protect your important items such as: cameras, cell phones, electronics.

Q: What if I get sea sick? A. Well it does happen but no so often, we recommend you invest into an over the counter substance like Bonine or Dramamine to help with motion sickness. You know who you are! If you can, we also suggest eating a light meal an hour before your boat tour.

Q: What about the sulfur dioxide and the huge smoke cloud? A. For the most part the huge plume that you see is steam created by the lava entering the ocean. There can be sulfur dioxide in the air as well as ash and glass particles and sometimes smoke as the jungle burns. We do not enter the steam cloud, but in some cases we do have to go under the steam plume to get to the lava side of the flow. The Possibility of ash and / or volcanic particles as well as slightly acidic rain (which has about the same acidity as lemon juice) can land on the boat and passengers. There is always a chance of having an adverse reaction if you have allergies, asthma, or other breathing issues. If you have any difficulties with your lungs or skin it is best to bring a dust mask and / or any medication you may need. If we smell sulfur we move to a clean air location. Please let us know of any concerns before booking.

Q: What if I am pregnant or have back/ neck issues? A. This trip is not for you if you are pregnant or have existing back/neck issues due to rigorous ocean conditions. Ask yourself & your group If they can handle getting bumped, bounced around for 2 hours on a boat? If the answer is no, then this trip is not for you. Certain physical conditions warrant serious consideration of worst case possibilities.

Q: I thought we could just walk out and see lava? A: As of March 2008, the County of Hawaii has denied access to the lava fields due to it being EXTREMELY hazardous to your life with risks of lava benches falling into the sea occurring regularly. The Visitor lava viewing center is closed about a half a mile up the coast from the actual lava flow area.

Q: Ok, how close can we get to the lava? A: Upon arrival our approach is 200 yards away. After assessing the lava ocean entry to make sure it is possible to safely to get a closer look at the lava. Depending on the conditions of the lava flow we can be as close as 20 yards under excellent conditions. You shouldn’t need your telephoto lenses/binoculars on any of our lava volcano tours.

Viewing lava on a boat on the big island.

No photo or video on the internet can compare to seeing running lava with your own eyes.  There are a few lava boat tour companies to choose from, but smaller boats with less people are often regarded as the best ride to really enjoy the view. The privacy, space and better view is definitely worth the price to view this beautiful act of nature in motion. When the lava is flowing into the ocean, by sea is the way to go to get that spectacular view.

Lava flowing into the ocean.

Lava is not the only thing that you’ll be seeing to and from the site. You’ll most likely be seeing malolo (flying fish) coasting in the wind and landing only when you can barely see them. If you’re lucky, you may even see dolphins splashing along side of you!

Local tip: The waves are bigger here especially in windy weather. This area is not naturally protected by reefs and juts out into the ocean since new land is constantly being formed by the lava. If you’re prone to seasickness and still want to go, definitely invest in motion sickness patches and stay in the front of the boat and look straight ahead as much as possible.

Viewing the lava up close.

Note: For several years, we’ve had a big problem with unlicensed boat tours taking passengers out to see the lava flow illegally. Earlier this year (2017) the Coast Guard finally began cracking down on them due to the lava suddenly bursting out uncontrollably. The Coast Guard has also established a safe viewing area that is in effect until September 28.

Local tip: There are currently only 4 licensed companies that can legally take out passengers to see the lava flow and several non-licensed companies. If the company can’t provide a license, don’t get on.

Romantic lava-viewing session.

Update: In Mid-July 2018, a lava bomb shot out and severely injured a passenger while on an excursion with Lava Ocean Tours. You can read the story on  Hawaii News Now .

As of now, the 4 licensed companies are: Lava Ocean Tours , Moku Nui Lava Tours , Kalapana Cultural Tours and Hawaiian Lava Boat Tours . Only Moku Nui Lava Tours and Hawaiian Lava Boat Tours currently have permission to view the lava flow from within the Coast Guard’s 300 meter viewing area. While the view is certainly awe-inspiring, keep in mind that many people think that these tours are an accident waiting to happen since the bed could collapse without warning and debris could be flung out in every direction. Plus, the noxious fumes are unsafe for anyone to inhale. Do your research to decide whether or not this tour is right for you.

Local tip: lava flowing into the ocean does not happen everyday. Check company sites to see updates on the status of the lava flow. The very popular evening tours are booked months in advance while morning tours are much more flexible, so plan accordingly.

Hawaii Volcanoes FAQs

As of 2023, there are 6 Hawaii volcanoes that are considered active. And the Big Island of Hawaii is home to 4 out of those 6. The active volcanoes on the Big Island include Kilauea, Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and Hualalai. The remaining active volcano is Haleakala on Maui. There is also a volcano off of Big Island’s coast that is underwater too!

Unless the volcanoes are actively erupting, you will not be able to see lava in Hawaii. Kilauea last erupted in December 2020.

While you won’t die if you quickly touch the lava, you will definitely get a horrible burn. I definitely don’t recommend it!

It depends on traffic, but it usually takes about 2 hours if you don’t make any stops. There are a lot of cool places to see along the drive from Kona, so I suggest planning for 3-4 hours to take in some sights along the way.

Usually, the best way to see the volcano in Big Island is to go on a Hawaii volcano tour! You can also enjoy some self-guided tours if you prefer to go at your own pace to view these active volcanoes.

The best volcano tours take you to see the Kilauea volcano and help you to explore Volcanoes National Park. There are even some that take you to some black sand beaches and take you on a day trip all around the island of Hawaii.

If you want to see the red, hot lava glow, then you will want to go very early in the morning or after it gets dark under the night sky. However, there are plenty of other awesome things to explore at the Big Island volcanoes, so you can visit any time you want!

Where to Stay in Volcano Hawaii

Now that you know what to do at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, let’s talk about accommodations. There are tons of options for places to stay in Volcano Hawaii for all price points.

Unless you want to go camping, the only place to stay inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the Volcano House Hotel . It’s a historic Big Island hotel that is super convenient for exploring the park. And it’s great for exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with kids !

Otherwise, your best bet is to stay at a vacation rental in Volcano Village. Some of my top picks include Hale Sweet Hale (featured on HGTV), At the Crater’s Edge , and Volcano Hideaway Hale (also seen on HGTV).
