64 Fantastic Things To Do In Denver This March

All the things to do in March that'll help you soak up the last of Winter and welcome in Spring.

Jessica Ramos

Welcome to March where we’re just a step away from spring! But before we get to spring, a little reminder that Colorado normally collects the most snow during March, so this is your last chance for snowy adventures, activities, and wintry road trips. With so many restaurants, cultural events, and adventures to do, there’s just not enough time to do it all, but at least you’ll have a bit of a guideline with this list. Here’s your guide to the 64 fantastic things to do in March in Denver.

1. Enjoy a cozy night with one of these magical candlelit concerts

A Candlelight concert at The Kirk of Highland showing a string quartet performing on a stage covered in candles.

One of the most popular cultural series across the globe, Candlelight, is opening its doors to you this season with some spectacular shows. Rumor has it that a gorgeous concert dedicated to classical renditions of the powerful singer, Adele’s, greatest songs will hit Denver in April, but tickets are available now and selling out fast. For now, you can enjoy a variety of other contemporary musicians played by talented string quartets from Radiohead to Taylor Swift at the historical Wings over the Rockies and Kirk of Highland. Plus, fans of Studio Ghibli will be enchanted by a concert dedicated to composer Joe Hisaishi’s most magical soundtracks.

2-12. Spend a weekend away at one of Colorado’s snowiest cities

Following the tail end of the recent winter storm (with some more snow to come) means a snowy season in the mountain towns of Colorado. The recent news in Breckenridge and Steamboat sees their ski resorts extending their seasons, which means, for those who are a fan of winter wonderlands, you can road trip to one of these cities, named as Colorado’s snowiest, and visit their nearby resorts. As road trips go, they are one of our favorite things to do .

  • Crested Butte
  • Steamboat Springs

13-19. Visit the world’s biggest natural hot springs (or these 5 others)

places to visit in denver in march

What began as a 19th century Victorian retreat space has now become the world’s biggest mineral pool. Glenwood Hot Springs is a beautiful, secluded resort that’s a short drive away from some of the best skiing in Colorado, like Snowmass and Aspen. Other hot springs around Colorado like Mount Princeton or Strawberry Park Natural Hot Springs are also situated across the state, ready to be enjoyed and to soak away all your troubles, and we wrote up a round up here.

20. Denver Restaurant Week is returning to the city this month

places to visit in denver in march

Denver Restaurant Week is an annual week of exclusive, budget menus from some of Denver’s most talented chefs, and we couldn’t be more excited about who is participating this year. Denver Restaurant Week will be taking place from March 3rd to 12th, so you have plenty of time to try out as many menus as your budget and stomach can handle.

21-28. Catch the last of this extended snow season at one of these resorts that avoid I-70

A ski left surrounded by snow-covered mountains and trees

Weekend traffic on I-70 is the absolute worst, especially right now when the mountains are covered in so much snow, so we thought you might like to try to avoid it all together. With Colorado having so many other viable options–plus there being an alternative route to big resorts like Breckenridge and Vail-we put together this list to help you find the quickest routes to spend the least amount of time in traffic and more time shredding this March.

  • Copper Mountain
  • Monarch Mountain

29-42. Try one of Denver’s quirkiest craft cocktails for a cozy night in

An image of two red cocktails with popsicles inside

If you’re looking to beat the chill of the outdoor air then why not head inside a cozy, dimly lit cocktail bar? With so many amazing spots to choose from in Denver that are quirky, themed, and always delicious, we could barely narrow our choice down to just 13, but we think you’re going to really like this list. Plus, what’s a better thing to do in Denver than enjoy well-crafted drinks with friends? By the way, here’s a sneak peak at some of the choices:

  • The Cruise Room
  • Hell and High Water Tiki
  • Slasher’s

43. Check out this new global dinner concept from Beckon

A dark and moody square bar with yellow lighting

Over on Larimer Street is Beckon, a chef-driven restaurant that’s caused quite the stir in the Denver restaurant scene. They’ve now introduced a new dinner-style concept, Major Tom , to the same area–in fact, it even shares a fence. A cellar, bar and kitchen described as “food discovery with a communal atmosphere,” they’ve got global dishes and an extensive champagne list for you to try.

44-50. Take a stroll through Capitol Hill

The Colorado State Capitol Building covered in snow

Denver’s most populated neighborhood is also one of its oldest, with a unique history that can be seen along Colfax and in its historical buildings, like the impressive state Capitol. We listed 6 things to do in Capitol Hill that you have to check out at least once, from museums to coffee shops to some of the best places to eat and drink.

51-59. Attend one of these cultural festivals around Colorado this month

Denver during the St. Patrick's Parade

From art festivals to film festivals to restaurant weeks and craft beer celebrations, not to mention St. Patrick’s Day! 3. Restaurant Week in Denver

If you’re in Denver in March, you’re sure to have a great foodie experience if you land during Restaurant week.

During this time, participating restaurants will offer unique, delicious menus to restaurant week participants. There are options for to-go, but it’s best to make a reservation and enjoy the entire experience.

Choose from gourmet food halls that source local ingredients and powerful flavors to sit-down seafood restaurants where the food is flown in daily.

There are restaurants all over the Denver area, including the tech center (DTC) and Cherry Creek. The foodie week has grown to over 200 participating restaurants.

303 Day is a bit of a random, unofficial day of celebration in Denver. The main area code for Denver and surrounding areas is 303, making March 3rd significant.

Local radio stations will host concerts by local musicians and help locals celebrate Denver on this day.

Another celebration in Denver in March is the Denver March Powwow. This has been going on for nearly 5 decades and celebrates Native American heritage.

Enjoy the Grand Entry that starts each day with raising the flag. Attendees can also join in with dancing to the drums and music.

This is a great cultural experience for families. It’s quite affordable, and children 6 and under are free.

For some fun, cheap outdoor adventures, grab a sled and head to a local hill for some family-fun sledding.

Here are a few local favorites when it comes to sledding hills:

  • Prairie Meadows Park (Prairie Meadow Dr and Uinta)

Colorado Adventure Park is an hour-and-a-half away up in the mountains of Fraser. It’s one of the more affordable places to tube, and it also offers snowshoeing and fat biking.

9-15. Indoor Attractions Around Denver

While you’ll still get plenty of sun in March in Denver, you’re likely to run into some wintery conditions as well.

All that means is that you may want to head to some indoor activities in Denver. Here are a few that will keep the whole family entertained!

Meow Wolf- an illusionary type of attraction, heavy on senses of sight and sound.

Downtown Aquarium – Plenty of sea life to discover, plus a tiger and mermaids! Makes sure to eat at the Aquarium Restaurant which is the coolest ocean atmosphere you’ve been to.

Denver Museum of Nature and Science – This is a favorite! We love seeing the mummies and learning all about space. My kids really love the hands-on activities and challenge course as well.

Molly Brown House- Molly Brown was a Titanic survivor, but she actually did so much more in the community.

Children’s Museum – Located just beyond the aquarium you’ll find the popular Children’s Museum. All ages will find something to explore and play with here.

Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum – Witness the first hospital helicopter, how pilots navigated their way before GPS, a moon rock from the Apollo 15 mission, and more.

Colorado State Capital- Take a free tour of the capital building to admire its famous dome and hefty amount of Colorado Rose Onyx. Check out the Colorado supreme court area as well as house and senate chambers.

Save on many attractions in Denver with the CityPass!

16. Take a Winter Hike near Denver in March

Hiking isn’t just for summer. When you’re in Colorado, hiking is a year round adventure.

If the weather is agreeable, grab some sturdy hiking boots and find your way to a local hike.

For an easier stroll, head to Sloan’s Lake or Wash Park for a lake view on your walk.

For something a little more off-road, head to Red Rocks for easy, flat trails among red rock scenery.

And if you have snowshoes with you, take the drive up to Rocky Mountain National Park for a real treat in scenery.

Bonus: If you do head up to Rocky Mountain National Park, then check out the events going on in Estes Park as long as you’re up there. Events range from calm Art Walks on the first Friday to the bizzare Frozen Dead Guy Days on St. Partrick’s Day weekend. This usually involves a Polar Plunge as well.

17. Hit the Slopes

March brings some of the best skiing to Colorado. If you’re able to get out of the city, take the trip over to the ski resorts (some big resorts just an hour and a half away, like Breckenridge ) and spend a day on the mountain.

With high levels of snow and a good chance at sunshine, skiing over spring break can be incredible!

Some of the closer resorts include Breckenridge, Keystone, A Basin, Loveland, Echo Mountain, and Eldora.

To avoid hitting ski traffic, consider making a little weekend trip into the mountains.

Weather in Denver in March

Average lows start the month in the low 20s and end the month in the high 20s. But those are the nighttime chills. While March may be the snowiest ( averaging 11.5″ in the month of March), it still has plenty of fair-weather afternoons.

The average highs in Denver start at 50 and by the end of the month we see highs in the high 50s.

(more stats here)

That said, those are averages. If you end up in Denver during a blizzard, make sure to dress warmly in layers. And if it does blizzard, don’t worry. You’ll see the sun soon enough.

Where to Stay

I always recommend the Grand Hyatt in Denver. It’s centrally located to a lot of attractions, 16th Street Mall, and close to public transportation if you’re heading to Denver without a car.

It has a beautiful lobby and a nice indoor pool, perfect year round!

Book the Grand Hyatt

While it may not be prime time, there are still plenty of fun activities and things to do in Denver in March. Enjoy great food during restaurant week, check out one of the local sledding hill or tubing establishments, head to a museum of attraction, or just enjoy hiking around the area.

Situated just south of RiNo, Lodo is home to a variety of businesses, restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues. The area is home to Coors Field and Union Station, too! If you’re staying in a hotel, you’re most likely staying in LoDo.

Take the time to walk around this neighborhood and see what you stumble upon. You never know what you might find!

Have fun at the Children’s Museum of Denver

One of the best things to do in Denver with kids is to visit the Children’s Museum , especially if you are visiting with kids. The Children’s Museum is a great place for kids of all ages to learn about different subjects.

The museum has many interactive exhibits that teach kids about science, art, history, and more. The Children’s Museum is a great place to take the family for a day of fun and learning!

Shop at a local farmer’s market

If you’re looking for the best things to do in Denver this weekend, one great option is to visit a farmer’s market. Shopping at a farmer’s market supports local farmers and helps to ensure that you’re getting fresh, high-quality produce.

Plus, it can be a lot of fun to browse the different stalls and see all the different kinds of fruits and vegetables that are available.

Farmer’s markets are typically held on weekends, so if you’re visiting Denver on a weekend, be sure to check out one of the city’s many farmer’s markets.

Some of the best include the Cherry Creek Farmer’s Market , the Boulder Farmer’s Market , and the Denver Union Station Farmer’s Market .

Have a bite to eat at the Denver Central Market

People walking in front of a building that says Denver Central Market.

The Denver Central Market is a great place to eat, and it’s located right in the beautiful RiNo. The market offers a wide variety of food options, so you’re sure to find something to your taste.

Once you peruse the market and grab whatever food you’d like (we absolutely love and suggest Green Seed for smoothies), find a spot to eat by the street art outside the market.

Check out the sealife at the Denver Aquarium

turtles sitting on a log at an aquarium

If you find yourself in Denver, then you absolutely must visit the world-renowned Denver Aquarium . While many people visit here to try out the restaurant (which is consistently voted as one of the best places to eat in Denver), the aquarium itself is fun, too.

Head upstairs and walk from exhibit to exhibit. Take your time; there are lots of signs throughout the aquarium where you can learn more. Surprise, but there is a tiger there too!

You can also consider going on one of the Denver Aquarium free days.

Golf at Urban Putt

Located in Lodo, Urban Putt is one of our favorite hidden gems . This indoor golf course has two different courses set up to replicate parts of Denver! Golf through Denver International Airport, downtown, and even Red Rocks.

Visit during the day to avoid the rush from happy hour. This is fun for both kids and adults, no matter how many times you go! (We’ve gone a handful of times and plan on going many more.)

Eat a burrito at D’Corozan

smothered burrito, chips and salsa, and queso on a table

D’Corazan is one of the best places to get a burrito in Denver ! We ate here during our first-ever trip to Denver, and since moving here, it’s where we go all the time.

Their cheesy queso with green chile has a nice spice but is incredibly tasty. Their a la carte beef burritos are also so delicious. Order both at the same time and put some of the queso on the burrito for a real treat.

This restaurant is located downtown, so if you’re exploring 16th Street, this is a great place to go to escape the commercial restaurants and eat local.

Ultimate Long Weekend Denver Itinerary

How would you like to spend 3 days in Denver? If it is a destination you haven’t previously considered, let me change your mind with this detailed Denver Itinerary.

Denver. The Mile High City. The gateway to the majestic Rocky Mountains and a city with more sunshine days per year than Florida (and not a lot of humidity – thank the Lord).

Denver was once home to Wild West sensibilities – steakhouses and cowboys – but now it is more like the Austin or Portland of the Rockies. These days, Denver is hip and happening and is a must for any Colorado itinerary .

Denver may not be an obvious choice when looking for a U.S. City to visit, especially next to the likes of San Francisco, Seattle , Chicago, New York, etc. but Denver has so much to offer a visitor.

Especially a visitor who, like me, loves good beer and outdoor adventures. You should definitely visit Denver, and 3 days in Denver is the perfect taster.

Larimer Square in downtown Denver

With its amazing and inventive beer, a young and vibrant population, some of the best Mexican food outside of Mexico, loads of biking and hiking trails, a downtown full of historic red brick buildings, and a world-class outdoor concert venue nestled amongst striking red rocks, I’m pretty sure you are going to love Denver.

It was really hard to narrow it down, but I have put together a three-day itinerary for what I consider to be the perfect long weekend in Denver, which includes all of my favorite things like craft beer, delicious food, and lots of outdoor time.

Cherry Creek in Denver

This three days in Denver itinerary also covers some of Denver’s best neighborhoods to visit .

If you make it a week you will be able to head into the mountains as well for a few days of touring around, or use Denver as a base and do some day trips.

Colorado really is an incredibly beautiful state that is home to a vast wilderness of stunning mountains and charming mountain towns , including my favorite, Telluride .

Hold on to your seats folks, and get ready to get excited to spend 3 days in Denver!

Denver Itinerary Day One

Morning – downtown and larimer square.

Start your day off reasonably early with breakfast at a Denver Institution, Snooze, in historic Union Station.

Visit Union Station during your 3 days in Denver

After you have stuffed yourself with their famous pancakes, Eggs Benedict, or whatever else you chose from their extensive menu, it’s time to explore LoDo – or Lower Downtown for you out-of-towners.

Make sure to marvel at the beautifully restored Union Station before you leave, and head to another Denver institution, Tattered Cover, an independent bookstore in Union Station.

Next head to Larimer Square to check out the stores there, but mostly to ogle the restored red brick warehouses strung with fairy lights that are now home to various stores, restaurants, and bars.

Visit lovely Larimer Square as part of your Denver itinerary

Heading further into downtown, walk or catch the free bus down the pleasant 16th Street Mall, where there are street performers in summer.

Don’t miss the interactive Museum of Illusions , one of the fun museums in downtown Denver you add to your Denver Itinerary. Be prepared to take lots of mind-bending photos!

Museum of Illusions

If you want to do any shopping during your visit, this is the place to do it. At the other end of downtown are Civic Center Park and the State Capitol which you can visit on a free tour .

Add a tour of the Colorado Capitol Building in Downtown Denver to your Denver itinerary

There are loads of options for lunch but I would recommend grabbing some excellent Mexican food at either Illegal Petes, D’Corazon, or Rio Grande – which is famous for its outdoor patio and giant frozen margaritas.

If you find yourself in Denver on a Wednesday or Thursday between mid-April to mid-October, check out Civic Center Eats at Civic Center Park – a gathering of food trucks with seating and live music, where you can get anything from tacos and arepas through to Southern BBQ and nitro ice cream. Mmmmmm.

Civic Center Eats in Denver

Afternoon – Hit a Bike Trail

After a morning of awesome eats, it’s time to burn it off. Grab a city bike from one of the many bike docking points around the city and hit one of the bike trails that follow the river.

I recommend the Cherry Creek trail or the South Platte River trail from Confluence Park.

Biking one of the many bike trails in Denver should be added to any Denver itinerary

Denver may not be by the sea like San Francisco, or on a lake like Chicago , but I think seeing a raging, wild river that flows through the heart of the city is pretty special.

Stop along the way to rest in the shade on the river banks or one of the many green spaces around the city – Denver summers are hot!

If you are feeling brave, wade into the waters of the South Platte River at Confluence Park to cool off, then sit in the sun to dry off on the small beach.

Swimming at Confluence Park in Denver - a must add to your 3 days in Denver itinerary during summer

For you outdoor adventure lovers, don’t miss the giant REI just across the river from the park which has its own climbing wall and you may even be able to try out a kayak on the river if you time it right.

After a busy day, you will probably want to chill out for a bit back at your accommodation before heading out to dinner.

Check out the architecture in Denver during your 3 days in Denver

Evening – Brewery Hopping and Street Art in RiNo

Before dinner, walk around the River North Arts District (RiNo) checking out all the wonderful street art and murals in this area – there is so much!

Head to Larimer Street and Walnut Street between 26th and 31st to see the highest concentration.

Check out the street art in RiNo as part of your Denver Itinerary

After your street art wanderings, hit up one of the food halls that Denver is famous for, for dinner – Denver Central Market and Zeppelin Station are both great choices and also have bars.

After dinner, it’s time for some brewery hopping! In RiNo my favorites are Great Divide Brewing Barrel Bar, Ratio Beerworks, Black Shirt Brewing Co., and Our Mutual Friend Brewing.

If sour beer is your thang (if so, we should be friends), then don’t miss Goed Zuur – a sour beer and cheese restaurant in nearby Five Points.

If you want to visit some Denver breweries that are further afield and to avoid driving while under the influence, you can book with a limo service offering brewery tours .

Explore downtown during your 3 days in Denver

Denver Itinerary Day 2

Morning – washington park and pearl street.

Your second day in Denver begins with breakfast in Old South Gaylord where you can get great coffee and pastries at Devil’s Food Bakery. Wander this pleasant shopping district then make your way on foot or by bike over to Washington Park – or Wash Park as it is known by Denverites – for a walk.

It takes about an hour to walk around pretty Wash Park, where there are views over to the Rocky Mountains and a couple of lakes. The park is a peaceful spot that is popular with locals and you will see lots of them running and power walking around the park on sunny mornings.

Walking around Wash Park in Denver should be added to your Denver 3 day itinerary

From Wash Park, head to another pretty shopping precinct, South Pearl, where you can browse the boutique shops, and then grab lunch at Kaos Pizzeria which does some of the best pizza in Denver, or grab delicious Australian-style rotisserie chicken and sides from Chook.

If you are visiting on a Sunday, don’t miss the weekly Farmers Market  in the warmer months.

Eating at Kaos Pizzeria in Denver

Afternoon – Meow Wolf!

In the afternoon, head to Meow Wolf – an art installation and experience like no other. Even if you don’t have kids with you, don’t miss Meow Wolf. It’s hard to explain the amazingness of Meow Wolf but it is like traveling to a dream world with different interactive experiences and rooms within.

Go and find out what Meow Wolf is all about for yourself.

Meow Wolf Denver

Evening – South Broadway and Red Rocks

After freshening up back at your hotel, head out to South Broadway for dinner. South Broadway is full of eclectic shops, dive bars and so many great places to eat.

Go for excellent sushi at Go Fish, Sputnik for unique vegetarian eats, or gastro diner food at Punch Bowl Social where there is also an arcade and bowling alley. And d on’t miss the iconic Voodoo Doughnuts for dessert.

South Broadway in Denver

Red Rocks Amphitheatre is the endpoint of your night if you planned in advance and got a ticket to an outdoor concert or movie there and believe me, you don’t want to miss this.

Amazing views at Red Rocks, a must visit for your 3 days in Denver

Red Rocks is a highlight of any Denver itinerary and is truly special. The sound quality is amazing and watching the sky turn pink and purple as the sun sets over the city is a fantastic experience.

If you aren’t able to attend an event at Red Rocks then head up there in the afternoon instead, to do a short hike, visit the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, and admire the views. It’s a truly beautiful spot whether you visit during the day or at night.

Denver Itinerary Day 3

Morning – outdoor adventure in golden.

Your last day in Denver will see you visiting one of my absolute favorite spots: Golden !

Golden is a historic gold rush town in the foothills of the Rockies that is surrounded by mountains and has a river, Clear Creek, running through it. It is one of my favorite mountain towns near Denver , and it is super accessible and easy to get to.

Grab breakfast at Bonfire Burritos – they do an awesome breakfast burrito – then it’s time to choose your own adventure!

Visit Golden as part of your 3 days in Denver Itinerary

There are a number of activities to get you out in nature here, including tubing the rapids of Clear Creek (don’t let the tame name fool you), hiking one of the trails around Golden , or mountain biking one of the many trails along the front range.

You can rent mountain bikes and tubes in Golden. Ask at the Information Center for more ideas and logistics.

Walking the Clear Creek trail in Golden near Denver

Afternoon – Explore Downtown Golden

Once you are adventured out, head back into Golden for lunch at one of my favorite Denver restaurants, Sherpa House , for their delicious Nepalese/Tibetan buffet. It is very affordable and so tasty.

Add Golden to your Denver Itinerary

Or if pizza is more up your alley – check out Woody’s Wood-fired Pizza, which offers an affordable buffet with salad and their famous beer cheese soup as well as pizza. There are also a couple of excellent food halls in Golden – Tributary Food Hall and Market, and the Golden Mill.

The historic main street of Golden is a lively place for a stroll and there is a range of antique and second-hand stores to browse with all kinds of bric-a-brac. If you are visiting Golden on a Saturday in summer – visit their weekly farmer’s market.

Make Golden part of your Denver Itinerary

If you are interested in mountaineering, make sure to visit the American Mountaineering Museum, or if you are into Coors Beer, you can tour the brewery (although there are MUCH better breweries in town where you can do tastings).

Golden also has a few excellent little craft breweries so you could (should) spend a couple of hours trying out some of the inventive brews that Colorado is famous for – New Terrain is my favorite brewery in the Denver area with a wide range of inventive beers and a rotation of awesome food trucks.

Mountain Toad and Golden City Brewing are also worth checking out – both have pleasant beer gardens and delicious brews.

Hiking in Golden near Denver - a great add on to a 3 days in Denver itinerary

Evening – Dinner and Drinks in the Highlands

After freshening up (or taking a nap), it is time to head on over to the Highlands – Denver’s hipster capital and home to sooo many great places to eat and drink.

The Highlands is made up of a few great shopping and dining districts so choose one:

Highlands Square: A super cute district located around 32nd and Lowell that has awesome Detroit-style pizza at Blue Pan Pizza, awesome wings at Fire on the Mountain (they have vegan wings too), and the Highlands Farmers Market on Sundays in the summer months.

Visit Tennyson Street as part of your Denver Itinerary

Berkeley/Tennyson Street: Another happening district with great shopping and tons of delicious restaurants and breweries. I love the well-regarded vegetarian restaurant Vital Root, the pasties at The Pasty Republic, local craft beer at FlyteCo and The Emporium breweries, and nearby Tocabe which has excellent Indian tacos.

And don’t miss The Denver Cat Company if you are a cat lover like me.

Visit Sloan Lake during your 3 days in Denver

Sloan Lake/Edgewater: Walk around Sloan Lake, drink beer on the patio at excellent Joyride Brewing Company, grab Kiwi-style fresh fruit ice cream from Happy Cones, or other delicious offerings at Edgewater Public Market.

Lower Highlands (LoHi): If you want something closer to the city, head to LoHi where you can find the massive bar and restaurant with a roof terrace that is Avanti, Linger – the former mortuary turned eatuary, and famous ice cream from Little Man.

LoHi is also home to some GREAT breweries – make sure to visit Denver Beer Company, Zuni Street Brewing, and Little Machine. And don’t miss one of the best speakeasies in the country: Williams and Graham.

Beer tasting should be part of any Denver Itinerary

Other breweries nearby that are definitely worth checking out are Raices Brewing Company – which celebrates Latin food, beer, and culture, and Strange Craft – unassuming but home to some of the best beer in Denver.

Then it’s time to fly home and sleep for at least 24 hours to recover from your action-packed, beer-soaked long weekend in Denver!

So have I convinced you to visit Denver?

Visit Union Station during your 3 days in Denver

This is just a fraction of the things to do in Denver, I didn’t even mention gritty and exciting Colfax, affluent Cherry Creek, all the other awesome food halls to check out, boho Capitol Hill which is home to Molly Brown House and the Denver Botanic Gardens, quaint Olde Town Arvada, the Art District on Santa Fe, or happening City Park – which has free jazz on Sunday evenings in summer.

And all the best day trips from Denver that you could take – that’s a whole other post.

Visit Downtown Denver during your 3 days in Denver Itinerary

Then there are the sports events you could attend, all of the day hikes on the outskirts of the city, the museums downtown, and all of the weed you can smoke if you are that way inclined (it’s legal here!) – there is even a cannabis church .

There is so much to explore in Denver and the longer I am here, the more I realize this fact. It was an undiscovered gem for a long time but slowly and surely, people are starting to realize how cool it really is.

I will be releasing a massive list of my favorite things to do, eat, drink and see in Denver at a later date but I hope this 3 day trip to Denver Itinerary will help you in the meantime.

Viva la Denver!

Denver has a well-served airport, DIA, which is the fifth busiest airport in the U.S., so a lot of visitors choose to fly into Denver, but you can also catch a bus to Denver , catch an Amtrak train, or drive there.

How To Get Around in Denver

Although there is public transport in Denver, everything is quite spread out. The easiest way to get around in Denver would be to hire a car, but alternatively, you can get around Denver by train and bus.

Uber and Lyft are also prevalent in Denver and you never have to wait long for a ride.

Getting from the airport to Denver’s downtown is easy. There is a train that connects the airport to Union Station in LoDo, with further trains branching out from there.

Great list but what about suggestions for upscale shopping around Denver?

Thanks Sharon. For upscale shopping head to Cherry Creek, I don’t know specifics because I don’t shop much but that is the right area.

Thank you for sharing. Exactly what I need to plan my upcoming 3 days trip in March. And those beer recommendations, you’re amazing! Thank you again..

No problem Lea! I hope you enjoy Denver 🙂

wow , this is so amazing and beautiful place for visiting. the pics of Denver should create curiosity to visit this . i am really inspired by your article. thanks for sharing this amazing article about perfect 3days Denver itinerary.

Best Experience that you have shared to us

Great ideas for Denver but as a 303 native, we don’t swim in the Platte. Nope! Way too polluted. If you want to get in the water, you go “up the hill” I70 West and go rafting or tubing in the hills. 🙂

I don’t swim in there either but I do paddle when it’s really hot. Tubing in Golden is more my speed

I love your blog and LOVE Denver… we live in Colorado Springs (previously Pagosa Springs) and so we visit frequently. We recently stayed at the new Catbird Hotel in the heart of the RiNo Art District… it was so much fun and so much to do… we did a video of our time there… check it out 🙂 https://youtu.be/jJZadKdZiMI

Thanks so much Luis – Denver is a great city. The Catbird looks cool, I will have to add it to my accommodation list. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve lived in Colorado 35 years and haven’t seen half the things you mentioned. I’m now encouraged to pin this and follow your guide for a weekend!! Thanks for reminding me how great colorado can be!!

Thanks Lisa! I’m glad it has inspired you

Very well-researched article. I have to been living in Denver for years now and not a single time that I regretted my decision to live here.

Thanks so much Jeff! The kudos always means more when it is from a local. I have enjoyed my time living on and off in Denver immensely, and I feel like there is still so much more to explore.

I just read the whole article about Denver, nicely written by you. It feels good, One more thing I want to say that all the photographs are equally good. Thanks for sharing your travel experience with us.

I loved when I visited Denver a few years ago. However, there is clearly so much more I need to do when I return based on this post! My dream is go to a concert at red rock amphitheater.

Hi Franny, I hope you make it to Red Rocks one day – I still haven’t been to a concert there myself but hope to in the future.

I had a long layover in Denver once so spent the day in the city, but would love to go back again and explore more! I love Colorado 🙂

I hope you make it back to explore more Kelly!

Colorado is one of my favorite places + I definitely didn’t get to explore it to the extent that I wanted to when I was passing through last year! Will definitely be keeping these places in mind for next time! <3

It’s one of my favorite places too, I hope you make it back there!

Denver looks amazing! I heard so much about it and haven’t got to see it for myself. I love the street art and hope to see it soon. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks Shany, the street art is great in Denver.

That mural in the River North Arts District is really pretty. Denver looks like a great city with lots to do. Would love to visit one day.

RiNo has some great street art. I hope you make it to Denver one day Tina

I used to really like Coors before I stopped drinking. It’d be such a fun tour!

Love your detailed itinerary for Denver. I like places with an urban- nature mix. Saving this post for my future trip!

Thanks Mayuri, I like cities with an urban-nature mix too and Denver definitely has that.

I’ve only been to Denver once for a couple of days and was not near enough. Definitely pinning this itinerary for future reference when I visit again. So much natural beauty and charming places to explore.

Thanks, I hope you make it back!

I LOVE Denver. I have been a few times but still feel there is so much more I need to see. The bike trails look awesome as do all of the breweries. I am dying to see a concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

It’s a fun city to spend some time in – I hope you make it back 🙂

Great post! I’ve actually never been to Denver but it looks amazing! Red Rocks Amphitheatre has been high on my bucket list!

Red Rocks is a definite Denver highlight!

I have never been to Denver but it looks very nice to visit! The site of Red Rocks is particularly stunning! Would love to experience a concert here!

Red Rocks is amazing, I haven’t been to a concert yet myself but I definitely will be once things get back to normal

Wow Denver has so much to offer! What an informative guide 🙂

Thanks Nina, there is definitely a lot on offer to see and do in Denver

Yes, you’ve convinced me! Biking on the trails and along the river appeals to me most. I hope to visit someday!

Biking the trails is definitely one of my favorite things to do in Denver

Denver is such a gorgeous city! I’ve visited before, but discovered a few new places from your blog that I have to check out next time I visit. Pinned & saved your blog for my next Denver trip.

Thanks Shelley, I am still discovering new stuff all the time too

Wow Denver looks like a cool place ..with so many options ..I loved the pic of street .

Thanks Madhu, definitely lots of options here!

This makes me want to go back to Denver! I’ve been a few times but for work or just the night before heading to Boulder or the mountains. From what I saw it’s a cool city a lots more I need to see. I’ve always wanted to attend a concert at Red Rocks!

It is a really cool city, and I really want to see a concert at Red Rocks too – still haven’t although I have been to movie on the Rocks a couple of times and that is great too 🙂

I think I would enjoy Denver with all its breweries! Definitely my kind of place. I remember a video U2 made – is that the same Red Rocks?

Hi Sharyn, I looked it up and U2 did do a live at Red Rocks movie in the 80s so yes it is 🙂

Meow Wolf: Convergence Station Arrow

Meow Wolf installations are, by design, indescribable. Three hundred artists, including more than 110 from Colorado, collaborated on 79 projects, spread over four floors, to create a loud, neon-lit dreamscape that has something important to say if you scratch beneath the surface of the surreal, Instagram-friendly tableaus. Hidden catacomb passageways, trash-strewn cityscapes, alien bodegas and pizza parlors, and tons of Easter eggs about Denver culture and history allude to big-picture topics like accessibility and Indigenous rights. Upon opening, the Meow Wolf website warned that the exhibit features “dark spaces, low lighting, low overhangs, tight spaces, crawl spaces, narrow walkways, steep stairways, flashing/strobe lights, theatrical fog effects, music, some loud noises, and exposed materials.” In other words, be prepared for everything—especially if you’re claustrophobic or hate crowds.

United States Colorado Denver Museum Denver Art Museum

Denver Art Museum Arrow

Serious art lovers, this one’s for you. The city ’s biggest art museum is a bustling hub at the center of the Golden Triangle Creative District known for both its vast permanent collection and its blockbuster temporary exhibitions. Before you even step foot inside, you can admire the show-stopping architecture: a fortress-like building designed by Gio Ponti in 1971 and a newer building by Daniel Libeskind that evokes the jagged shapes of the Rocky Mountains. Inside, both art experts and novices can find things to love. An extensive collection of Native American Art is one of the best in the world; Claude Monet’s Waterloo Bridge, Sunlight Effect stops people in their tracks; and kids will enjoy hunting down the family-friendly activity centers scattered throughout the building. Grab a map at the entrance and don’t forget to check out the first floor gift shop for a treasure trove of glimmering vases and artsy gifts.

Red Rocks Amphitheater Denver

Red Rocks Amphitheatre Arrow

There’s a reason Red Rocks is considered one of the most beautiful outdoor music venues in the country. Bright red sandstone rocks jut out from either side of the stage to create a natural amphitheater with truly remarkable acoustics, and concert-goers are treated to views of downtown Denve r and the surrounding foothills. Even if you can’t see a concert, Red Rocks is worth visiting; fitness groups often run the stairs of the amphitheater on the weekend and the 1.4-mile Trading Post Trail rewards hikers with brilliant rock formations and valley views. Summer in Denver isn’t complete without at least a trip or two up to Red Rocks, and the event calendar offers something for everyone. Get tickets to celebrate a birthday or just because it’s Tuesday; an evening singing under the stars is a Colorado night done right.

United States Colorado Denver Attraction Larimer Square

Larimer Square Arrow

Picture the prettiest street in any city: wide sidewalks, red brick buildings, and restaurant patios full of well-dressed 30-somethings sipping wine. Boutique storefronts threaten your pocketbook, twinkle lights sparkle at night, the James Beard Award–winning Rioja celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and newcomer Bao Brewhouse serves all-you-can-eat soup dumplings on Tuesday nights. This is Larimer Square, the city’s first historic district. And even though you haven’t really been to the Mile High City unless you’ve Instagrammed the street’s signature twinkling lights—pro tip, they look especially amazing around the holidays—Larimer Square somehow manages to remain an authentic, non-touristy destination.

United States Colorado Denver Museum Clyfford Still Museum

Clyfford Still Museum Arrow

If there’s one museum that surprises you in the Mile High City, our money’s on the Clyfford Still Museum. At first glance, your eyes might slide over the imposing, cantilevered concrete building located adjacent to the much larger Denver Art Museum in the Golden Triangle. But don’t miss this rarely crowded, under-the-radar gem. Inside, a 3,125-piece collection focuses on the life and work of Clyfford Still, a modern artist famous for his groundbreaking abstract paintings. Spacious exhibition halls guide you chronologically through Still’s body of work, beginning with small sketches and landscape paintings from the 1920s and culminating in colorful canvases from the 1950s that cover the whole wall. This is a museum that educates without pretension; conversational placards prompt visitors to look at specific lines or colors in each painting and well-placed benches are the perfect place to contemplate Still’s influential contribution to the modern art movement.

United States Colorado Denver Attraction Denver Union Station

Denver Union Station Arrow

Union Station, Denver 's so-called “living room,” sits in the center of Lower Downtown. It's a busy transit center with an outdoor play fountain, patio-filled restaurants, and boutiques. But this is all new; for decades the historic Beaux Arts building—first constructed in 1881 before several fires required renovations in 1914—was a desolate and run-down train station. A $54 million restoration and a dedicated train to the airport changed all that, and the station’s Grand Hall has returned to its glory days. Tourists and locals alike come to gawk at the historic architecture, linger over drinks, or enjoy community events, including a weekend farmer’s market. Grab a farm-to-table dinner at Mercantile Dining & Provision, then finish the night slinging cocktails at the Terminal Bar.

United States Colorado Denver Attraction Denver Botanical Gardens

Denver Botanic Gardens Arrow

Set on 24 acres in the tree-lined Cheesman Park neighborhood, the Denver Botanic Gardens is a peaceful oasis that's perfect for a one- or two-hour stroll. Gravel and stone paths meander through dozens of different types of gardens, from drought-tolerant xeriscaping to a traditional Japanese garden. Don’t miss the rotating exhibits that showcase internationally recognized artwork peeking out from behind the plants. Also, be on the lookout for a giant orange- and red-glass Chihuly sculpture and So Proud of My Children , a carved stone piece depicting maternal love by Zimbabwean artist Nicholas Kadzungura. —both artists that showed at the gardens in the past. In the summer, the Monet Pool has an Instagram-worthy collection of water lilies, and in the winter the tropical conservatory is a must-stop to warm up. A well-curated gift shop also provides small trinkets and fancy gardening supplies.Plant lovers won't ever want to leave.

Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge Arrow

Colorado is chock full of national and state parks, but you don’t have to venture far from the Mile High City to immerse yourself in one of the state’s most wildlife-rich green spaces. Located about a 10-minute drive north of downtown, in the shadow of the airport, this 15,000-acre wilderness refuge has an unlikely origin story: It was home to a chemical weapons plant since the 1940s (making everything from napalm to mustard gas), and the land was later declared unfit for human habitation and named a Superfund site. In 1986, a few then-endangered bald eagles showed up to roost, gaining the attention of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Congress set the land aside as a future refuge. After $2.1 billion in cleanup efforts, the site opened to the public, offering Denverites an expanse of prairie, wetlands, and woodlands larger than the island of Manhattan , criss-crossed with hiking trails and dotted with lakes for catch-and-release fishing. Think of it as one of those drive-through theme park safaris, but instead of elephants and giraffes, you might spot mule deer, coyotes, prairie dogs, or even one of the continent’s most endangered mammals, black-footed ferrets, which were reintroduced in 2015.

alley way lit up by Christmas lights overhead

Dairy Block Arrow

In the early 20th-century, the Windsor Farm Dairy Building, in what Denverites now called LoDo, used to churn out butter, cheese, and milk, but these days it offers the cream of a different crop as the city’s trendiest new “micro-hood.” Within the space of one compact square block in the shadow of Coors Field, the development includes a hotel, a coworking space, shops, restaurants, bars, and a food hall. Make time to explore the pedestrian-friendly Alley, which slices through the block like a narrow canyon and is lined with unique hangouts, like Blanchard Family Wines and Deviation Distilling, where the Mountain Herb Gin is made with wild-foraged juniper and spruce tips. The Dairy Block is also home to one of the buzziest restaurants in the city, Brutø, which recently picked up both a Michelin Star and a Michelin Green Star. As of early 2024, the live-fire tasting menu spot has been helmed by Top Chef alum and Costa Rica native Byron Gomez.

Downtown Brewery Trail Walk Great Divide Brewing Company

Downtown Brewery Trail Walk Arrow

There are plenty of organized brewery tours in Denver , but it's just as easy (and maybe more fun) to create your own thanks to this interactive beer ma p put out by the city. Downtown has a high concentration of quality tasting rooms, and we suggest starting at Wynkoop Brewing Company , Denver’s first craft brewery. Fun fact: It was co-founded by now-Senator John Hickenlooper in 1988! Next, make your way to Jagged Mountain Craft Brewery for modern takes on traditional ales. Then it’s time for a heavy-hitter on the Denver beer scene: Great Divide Brewing Company . Finally, finish up at Woods Boss , a relative newcomer on the Denver scene that goes all in on Colorado kitsch. If you’re tired of cheesy tour guide jokes and feel comfortable ordering a pint, this DIY tour gives you Denver’s best beer at your own pace—and at a cheaper price point.

Denver Zoo Denver

Denver Zoo Arrow

The 84-acre Denver Zoo campus is a mostly outdoor journey on wide, well-spaced paths to see more than 3,000 animals. Recent renovations make certain exhibits feel like you’ve taken a trip away from the city for the day . The Stingray Cove exhibit, opened in 2020, is an open-air interactive experience that lets you touch and feed cownose and southern stingrays as they swim around a 15,000-gallon tank. An extra $5 admission fee gets you into the exhibit with one piece of food to feed, and the space also showcases bamboo and bonnethead sharks. Another don’t-miss exhibit is Predator Ridge, a five-acre recreation of the African savanna that rotates African lions and spotted hyenas through the enclosures. This May, the park also welcomed Down Under, an interactive, Aussie-themed enclosure, in which you’ll come face-to-snout with red kangaroos, red-necked wallabies, and endangered Huon tree kangaroos—plus a pair of imposing Southern cassowaries, dinosaur-like flightless birds with bright blue necks.

United States Colorado Denver Museum Museum of Contemporary Art Denver

Museum of Contemporary Art Denver Arrow

This intimate museum located just down the street from Union Station in LoDo punches far above its class with show-stopping modern art exhibits. The boxy structure was designed by acclaimed architect David Adjaye, and the imposing, somewhat hidden entrance (the wall-like door is activated with a motion sensor) can make the museum feel like an insiders-only gem. Inside, however, hidden skylights fill the interior spaces with light and a joyful vibe reminds visitors that art is meant to be enjoyed. As a non-collecting institution, the MCA Denver rotates three to four exhibitions each year with a view time of about two to four months each. This means that you never know quite what you’ll get when you walk in the doors, but that’s part of the fun. The manageable size of the MCA Denver and it’s careful pacing makes it just right for touring; spend an hour or so exploring the exhibitions and the building itself, and you’ll be ready to head to dinner or a light lunch.

Confluence Park Arrow

The Denver area is blessed with plenty of sprawling green spaces—and while Confluence Park isn’t exactly vast, it’s still a very special outdoor place. First established in 1974 as a riverfront restoration project, the compact plaza and park sits at the edge of Lower Downtown, at the spot where Cherry Creek meets the South Platte River. At just four acres, it's hard to get lost, and the staircases and ADA-accessible ramps mean you're just minutes away from the rest of downtown. The main attraction, unsurprisingly, is the water itself. You might be surprised by the whitewater rapids you’ll find right in the heart of the city, and the best way to experience the park—especially on a hot day—is from within a kayak or canoe, which you can rent from the nearby Confluence Kayak & Ski store. (If you need any other gear while you’re in the area, the park sits adjacent to the REI flagship, which occupies the 1901 Denver Tramway Power Company Building.) Expect biking and hiking trails, boulder-strewn shorelines, sloping green hills, and steps leading down into the water; abundant concrete connects it to the landscape of downtown, but the wildness of the river might make you feel like you're 100 or so miles away in the heart of the Rockies.

Oakwell Beer Spa Arrow

Colorado’s first beer-themed spa opened in 2021 in a residential area near Denver 's RiNo (River North Art District) and is in the process of adding a second location in the southern portion of the metro area in 2024. Owners Damien Zouaoui and Jessica French were inspired to bring the beer spa concept back to the States after traveling through Eastern Europe, where many spots offer the chance to bathe in hot beer. In translating the idea for an American audience, they stripped out all the Mitteleuropa kitsch and modernized the concept, borrowing from Japanese and Korean spas. Rather than book a traditional spa treatment, you’re left to your own devices in the hushed but comfortable private therapy rooms. Begin the circuit in the infrared sauna, which can reach up to 170-degree Fahrenheit, and extend the relaxation with an optional session in a zero-gravity massage chair that scans your body, tilts you back, and then comes at you from all angles like some kind of super-relaxing robotic carwash.

United States Colorado Denver Museum History Colorado Center

History Colorado Center Arrow

The History Colorado Center, located in Denver's Golden Triangle, foregoes boring exhibits for hands-on, focused explorations of the culture and people that make colorful Colorado what it is. You can expect artifacts, ephemera, art, and dioramas from not only the city’s history, but also the Rocky Mountains and the American West. The family-friendly museum is full of out-of-towners and locals alike, but it still feels under-the-radar thanks to a lack of crowds. Some exhibits are geared more towards kids , like an interactive recreation of a plains town in 1918, complete with a general store and a barn. But adults will enjoy artwork from local artists, video installations, and multimedia exhibitions that explore the stories of the state’s diverse peoples. The museum strikes a good balance between breadth and focus, introducing the history of the American West to visitors in a well-paced manner that leaves you interested but not overwhelmed.

16th Street Mall Arrow

Think of the 16th Street Mall as Denver 's answer to Times Square , Hollywood Boulevard , or the Las Vegas Strip . This mile-long, pedestrian-friendly shopping street is arguably the most touristy spot in the Mile High City, lined with chain hotels and restaurants. While it might not be the kind of place you’d usually visit, first-time visitors should check it out, and keep your eyes peeled for details others might miss: For example, architect I.M. Pei—best known for the Louvre Pyramid —designed the patterned sidewalk to look like a diamondback rattlesnake. The mall is in the middle of a $172.5 million overhaul, which is set to reopen in 2025 complete with new walkways and additional greenery, and its free shuttle bus system will move to the center of the road. The street cuts through the heart of downtown, so there's really no missing it. A shuttle bus, the Free MallRide, runs between Union Station and the Civic Center. An architectural highlight is the Daniels & Fisher Tower, which is modeled after Venice’s Campanile, and opened in 1911 as the tallest building west of the Mississippi. (Down below, you’ll now find the Clocktower Cabaret, which houses burlesque, comedy, and drag shows.)

Default

The Source Market Hall Arrow

When it opened in an 1880s iron foundry on the edge of downtown in 2013, The Source food hall signaled a sea change for the former industrial zone that would blossom into Denver 's RiNo Arts District. Five years later, the historic brick complex welcomed an attached 100-room hotel, done up in polished concrete and Baltic birch, with Japanese soaking tubs and a rooftop plunge pool. Today, the twin “market halls”—one in the original building, one in the new tower—house various food stalls and design shops, plus a barbershop and a florist. Standouts include Reunion Bread Co. , where baker Ismael De Sousa turns out incredible Venezuelan- and Portuguese-inspired pastries (try the golfeados, walnut-studded sticky buns topped, improbably, with cotija cheese), and Safta , an Israeli stunner from James Beard Award winner Alon Shaya.

The 12 Best Places to Visit in Colorado

Y ou could spend decades-as I have-exploring Colorado's stunning scenery and top attractions and still have more to see and do. No single trip can cover everything that makes the state a traveler's dream destination. AFAR's roundup of things to see and do in Colorado offered 16 tips to get you started, including driving the peak-to-peak scenic byway, visiting Denver Art Museum, and soaking in Iron Mountain Hot Springs. However, if you want to hit the highlights, here are your main targets, divided up by season.

The best places to visit in Colorado in fall

Colorado is spectacular year-round, but autumn's colors and temperatures make it a particularly magical time to visit.

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

Visiting the dunes typically means overnighting at the park's campground , because few accommodations exist near this remote spot some 230 miles south of Denver. But campers are rewarded with dusk and dawn's light shows on the sand dunes, which ripple beneath the sawtooth Sangre de Cristo mountains. Summers are scorching, but in fall, sand surfaces remain comfortable all day. Scramble across the dunes, or rent a sandboard to surf the slopes like waves.

Dunton Hot Springs

Dunton is the quintessential Colorado getaway for those who can afford it ($1,400 per night is typical). Guests cozy into hand-built log cabins that combine historic patina with western art and worldly comforts like sustainably made beds and linens. Rates include food and drink that make every meal feel special-think roasted pork with charred leek grits followed by poached rhubarb panna cotta-but the steaming springs are this getaway's raison d'être. Views from the rustic yet luxe bathhouse showcase aspen groves that turn amber in autumn, and one guest cabin (Well House) includes its own spring-fed soaking tub.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Most of this park's 4.3 million annual visitors flock here in summer, so I go in September for fewer traffic backups on Trail Ridge Road (a must-do drive traversing treeless alpine tundra). Fall is also mating season for the park's elk herd, and the possibility of hearing bulls' distinctive bugles adds extra magic to any hike. I always glimpse elk along the Moraine Park Loop, a 5.5-mile circuit that can be shortened to preference.

Best places to visit in Colorado in winter

Snow envelopes much of the state in the winter months, turning urban areas into winter wonderlands and promising world-class outdoor activities.

Meow Wolf Convergence Station

In fall 2023, Denver's fun house of immersive art installations launched Sips (With a Z), a cocktail bar and lounge dedicated to providing "a sanctuary of chill amidst the hubbub of quantum travel." Mirrored walls reflect a mashup of classical sculpture and graffiti art, and vintage furniture provides myriad perches for pondering the installation's experiential art. The bar is only open to Meow Wolf Denver visitors and event guests. While the previous art triggered sight, sound, and touch, the new lounge also titillates our sense of taste.

Sure, it's far from major cities, but I wager that the only winter enclaves with mountain vistas that rival Telluride's are in the Alps. These jagged southwest Colorado slopes offer scenery so jawdropping, I always feel dazzled, regardless of the snow conditions. And several mountaintop eateries showcase the splendor. Perched at 11,966 feet, Alpino Vino ranks as the highest restaurant in North America and serves Italian food and wine specialties within a cozy stone and log cabin. More tableside panoramas (and an award-winning wine list) await at Allred's at 10,551 feet.

Silverthorne

Once little more than a refueling stop for motorists traveling Interstate 70, Exit 205 is now an appealing home base for three nearby Colorado ski resorts (Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, and Breckenridge) and a destination in its own right. Stay at Hotel Indigo , the chain's first mountain property housing an upscale tequila bar and indoor swimming pool. Go snowshoeing or Nordic skiing at Raven Golf Club (free to the public; rent gear at Gore Range Sports) and enjoy après at the Bluebird Market food hall , where weekends find live bands entertaining drinkers at the central bar.

Best places to visit in Colorado in spring

Visitor numbers drop during the spring, but Colorado still puts on a show as flowers bloom and the arts scene wows guests.

Casa Bonita

Coloradoans Trey Parker and Matt Stone (creators of the South Park animated TV series) spent $40 million to renovate this Denver icon of Mexican food and carnivalesque stunts. Summer 2023 kicked off its much-anticipated reopening. Diners (up to 2,100 of them, at capacity) still line up with trays for meals, now designed by James Beard–nominated chef Dana Rodriguez. Cliff diving continues in the waterfall-fed pool, and the multi-level dining room delivers more spectacle than ambiance.

Crowds taper but deals abound during this destination's shoulder season. April and May are when Aspen's celebrated restaurants often offer discounted menus and drink specials, and at these elevations (the Snowmass base village sits at 8,104 feet), snow blankets the slopes well beyond the resorts' mid-April closing date, making for prime ski conditions-and rowdy parties. At Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro , the springtime ritual includes uncorking staggering quantities of champagne on the summit-ringed outdoor deck.

Idyllic weather and blooming cactus make spring my favorite time to visit Colorado's canyon country, and Fruita is the best home base. From here, it's a 15-minute drive to the sculpted red rock sandstone spires of Colorado National Monument and 5 minutes to world-famous mountain bike trails. Fruita's walkable downtown includes the Hot Tomato , delivering Jersey-style pizza that's good as gospel. Live music often enlivens the pedestrian block, and for sips, there are wineries in Palisade, 30 minutes east.

Best places to visit in Colorado in summer

Colorado's hiking and biking trails come into their own during the warmer months while road-tripping offers an easy way to see much of the state-in an EV on many of the scenic byways .

Crested Butte

After 25 years in Colorado, I still gape at the beauty of Crested Butte , because in a state that's chockablock with pretty views, this town tops the list. Sheer peaks rise up beside the streets' grid, where colorful, mining-era Victorians line the sidewalks. No highway noise ruins the mountains' quiet, and only merry sounds emerge from main street bars and eateries. The surrounding trails wind through aspen groves and meadows that are deservedly famous for July's display of wildflowers.

Bachelor Gulch

Come summer, the Bachelor Gulch base area of Beaver Creek ski resort becomes the scene of a daily lawn and pool party that encapsulates what's splendid about Colorado. Views include aspen-covered mountainsides, and adventures on foot or bike follow trails leading into wildflower meadows. Play a round of cornhole on the lawn, then relocate to Wyld 's patio for plates showcasing Colorado-grown produce. Stay at the Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch (renovated in 2022) to cool off in its outdoor pool and sip rosé from the surrounding loungers.

Fort Collins

Visit during Colorado State's summer break, and you won't have to elbow your way into this city's esteemed breweries. (Crooked Stave makes some of my favorite sours.) Nationally known New Belgium Brewing organizes the annual Tour de Fat each August, when a parade of 20,000 wildly costumed cyclists pedal the streets. I make the 100-year-old Armstrong Hotel my downtown home base and stroll from its classy-hip rooms to such downtown shops as Scrumpy's Hard Cider Bar, which pours drink made from local homeowners' apple trees.

Rocky Mountain National Park has it all: pretty meadows, alpine lakes, and imposing mountains.

The most gorgeous places to visit in Colorado: Our top picks

Aspen Maroon Bells reflection

For a journey into the American West, where you’re surrounded by 14,000 ft. peaks and nuanced culture, Colorado is the place to be. Whether taking in rugged small towns or exploring high alpine trails, there’s something to do from sunrise to sunset. The Rocky Mountains set the stage. Though the days of the Wild West are long gone, their spirit lives on in the Centennial State.

If it’s your first time visiting Colorado, it might seem like there’s too much to explore. The state’s wide open country is spread over thousands of square miles, and maximizing your trip means narrowing down options. To help, we’ve compiled the most gorgeous places to go to for a fulfilling visit from start to finish. Let’s dive in.

Colorado: Rocky Mountains and enchanting places

I’ve spent a good bit of time in Colorado, and what always stands out is the stunning topography and mining town heritage. Approaching Denver International Airport, snow-capped mountains hulk over the horizon, looking like a barely reachable, far-off world. Traveling west on I-70, old towns dot the landscape , with rustic main streets and Gold Rush-era mills. Being there feels like I’m front and center in the American West.

The picks in this list highlight the state’s natural bounty and western character. Also included is a place that takes you back in time to a culture forged by the Rocky Mountain landscape.

Mesa Verde National Park

In Colorado’s southwest corner, Mesa Verde National Park features ancient dwellings tucked away among cliffs and mesas. Built by Ancestral Puebloans — also called the Anasazi — between 600 and 1300 AD, the structures offer a window into a long-ago civilization. The buildings are reminiscent of sand castles, with some including a multi-story layout and petroglyphs depicting animals, humans, and handprints.

We’d focus on exploring the Cliff Palace, the largest building in the park, that once housed more than 200 people. Then we’d hike on the Petroglyph Point Trail , where a petroglyph panel offers a look into the Anasazi peoples’ lives and language.

Denver Union Station

Train travel opened the doors to westward exploration, and this Denver hub served as a main conduit. Originally built in 1881 as Denver Union Depot, it survived two decades — enduring a fire and a rebuild — before its replacement took shape. In 1914, Denver Union Station appeared a carved granite structure in the Beaux-Arts style, and enjoyed a long run as a cultural and travel hub. At its peak in the mid-1940s, the station welcomed more than 50,000 visitors per day.

Over the years, the station fell into disrepair, and a $54 million remodel in 2014 gave it a new lease on life. Now featuring eclectic restaurants and shopping , the station lets you enjoy a day in the city in between outdoor adventures. After a meal, hop on a train and take a trip to the western countryside. We’d visit Stoic & Genuine — a sustainable seafood restaurant and bar — then grab a cone at Milkbox Ice Creamery.

Rocky Mountain National Park

When you want to experience Colorado’s Rocky Mountain majesty, this is the place , spanning 415 square miles and offering more than 300 miles of hiking trails. Take in one of the state’s 58 “14ers” (mountains over 14,000 ft.), Long Peak, set among alpine lakes and untouched wildlife. On my trip there, what stood out was the extreme, rugged nature of the terrain — a harsh yet beautiful landscape among the clouds.

While there, we’d go on a multi-day backpacking trip for a truly refreshing time away from civilization. But remember, before you go, plan ahead, bring plenty of food (and a water purifier), and secure a wilderness permit. Additionally, no campfires are allowed, so pack a lightweight stove.

Though known as a haven for the rich and famous, Aspen has roots as a rustic mining town. Today, those worlds continue to co-exist, with fancy shops and restaurants mixed with historic sites like the Hotel Jerome , built in 1889. With four ski areas on offer — Aspen Highlands, Aspen Mountain, Buttermilk, and Snowmass — there’s more than enough terrain to explore. In the summer, hiking and biking trails let you take in the high-elevation sites, like the Maroon Bells, and wildlife like elk, bears, and more.

In the summer, we’d hit the Snowmass Bike Park , for a motocross-like ride through curated features. Post-ride, we’d visit Meat & Cheese , an eatery focused on local, fresh “world farmhouse” cuisine. The buttermilk fried chicken sandwich sounds like a perfect recovery meal.

Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre

Few things match the excitement of a live concert. Seeing your favorite artist in person, playing their hit songs, adds a new layer to the musical experience. Add in sharing it with friends and like-minded fans, and you’ve got a true party atmosphere. What could be better? A concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre .

As you travel west from Denver, you’ll notice enormous red rock formations springing from the earth. Carved into them is an amphitheatre and bleachers, creating a concert venue unlike anything in the world. Not only is it a singular setting, but its sound quality amplifies every note.

We’d visit during the height of summer, pack our favorite foods for a pre-show fiesta, and then take in the music as the sun sets. Southwest tacos and a 6-pack of Dale’s Pale Ale sounds just right.

Colorado immerses you in the American West

Though pictures and videos can give you a sense of Colorado and the Rocky Mountains, you have to be there to feel them. The peaks’ sheer size and magnitude are awe-inspiring and gorgeous, creating an appreciation for the natural world. Besides that, with old mining towns — and cultural epicenters — throughout the state, there’s plenty to learn and enjoy as you make your way.

Visiting Colorado is as easy as flying to Denver International Airport. From there, pick your route, though many choose a trip west on I-70 into the mountains . These places offer a diverse list of what the state has to offer — so book that ticket and take a journey into the American West.

Colorado news | denver sets new records in visitor numbers and spending in 2023, passing $10 billion for first time, more than 37 million visitors came to denver last year, with california the out-of-state leader.

Visit Denver, the city’s tourism sales and marketing agency, said last year’s visitor total of 37.4 million was a 3% bump over 2022. And the $10.3 billion in Denver’s tourism revenue last year outpaced the $9.4 billion collected the prior year by nearly 10%.

“Tourism is vital to the Denver economy and we are pleased to see our momentum continue in 2023, especially after the dramatic growth we saw in 2022,” Richard Scharf, Visit Denver’s president and CEO, said in a statement. “Denver’s tourism businesses, most of which are small and locally owned, rely on these visitors to fuel their success, which allows them to continue to hire employees – almost 66,000 across the metro area in 2023 – and to generate millions in state and local taxes.”

Overnight visitors totaled 20.5 million last year, a 3% rise from the previous year, generating $8.8 billion in spending in the Mile High City. Overnight leisure visits were top in growth last year, rising by 5% over 2022 to a new high of 17.5 million.

Longwoods International provided the Denver visitor data through its annual visitor profile study, which it has conducted for Denver for 30 years. The company’s president and CEO, Amir Eylon, said tourism in Denver in 2023 returned “to levels more in line with 2019,” the year before the coronavirus pandemic struck the state .

And Denver is doing comparably well nationally, Eylon said, “offering visitors both sought-after urban experiences and easy access to outdoor activities.”

The study revealed that visitors come to Denver consistently year-round, with a “modest surge” of visitors in the warmer months. And Denver International Airport plays a crucial role in moving those visitors in and out , with 40% of overnight Denver visitors arriving by plane in 2023.

The average overnight Denver visitor spent $427 per trip. In total, nearly $3 billion was spent on transportation, $2.5 billion on lodging and nearly $1.5 billion on drinks and food in 2023. Recreation, sightseeing and entertainment garnered the city $749 million last year, a 9.3% bump over 2022.

California, Texas, Kansas and Florida were the top four states, outside Colorado itself, in sending visitors to the Mile High City in 2023. And the top five cities sending overnight visitors to the city were Los Angeles, Albuquerque/Santa Fe, New York City, Dallas-Ft. Worth and Houston.
