As wine enthusiasts eagerly embark on bucket-list enotravel to visit the world’s most renowned wine regions , the desire to bring home wine or spirits for personal collections or to share with friends and family while reminiscing about their adventures is stronger than ever. But to many of us, the thought of seeing our luggage on the arrival carousel in a puddle of claret is too frightening, and we simply avoid it altogether. 

So, how does one minimize the risks of bringing back a sip-able souvenir?  Let’s review and critique the options for protecting special wine bottles you find on your travels.

Worry-free travel, with a price tag

Macgyver-ing the wine pack job.

In a pinch, many of us have tried to protect the bottle with the clothes or contents already at hand in our luggage. Although this most commonly-used option may not seem to warrant explanation, there is a science to giving this method a modicum of impact and leak resistance.

Start by slipping the bottle in a thick sock for the first layer of protection. Next, slide the sock-lined bottle into the base of a boot, or thickly and tightly wrap with jeans or a chunky sweater. The more layers the better. For leak insurance, insert the bottle into a heavy-duty garbage bag and roll it up like a sleeping bag. Lastly, and most importantly, the bottle needs to be in the middle of your suitcase, surrounded on all 6 sides by clothing or other articles.

Advantages: Little or no cost; takes up no additional space in luggage; no need to pack an additional accessory; can pack essentially any size/shaped bottle.

Disadvantages: Keep your fingers crossed if TSA inspects and repacks your bags; moderate risk for breakage/leakage remains.

Wine travel sleeves offer basic, but limited protection

Consider upleveling the basic option simply by bringing a neoprene wine tote/sleeve along and use in lieu of a sock as the first layer of protection. Neoprene is basically a rubber and offers much more impact protection than a cotton sock. It’s also inexpensive and easy to pack prior.

Ubiquitous and found online and within wine tasting rooms, the most common wine travel sleeve is a style of thick, heavy plastic bubble wrap with a Ziplock and/or folding velcro closure to prevent leaking. These widely available products carry an inexpensive price tag, and are compact in size while either full or empty. The bubble wrap, however, gives much less impact protection than one would think, and the plastic can be easily punctured by broken glass, risking spillage onto other luggage contents. If used, consider wrapping these sleeves within a heavy article of clothing and finish off by rolling them up in a garbage bag. Common examples of these are Wine Wings , JetBag , and WineSkin .

Offering slightly more protection than bubble wrap are inflatable wine sleeves that contain a bladder that is filled with air, either by using a pump or by blowing before sealing the bag. Like bubble wrap bags, Vinnibag , and the Giemson Wine Bottle Protector also have the advantage of being flat and compact while empty, but likewise are susceptible to puncture if the bottle breaks. The main disadvantages with these is that they take up considerable space when inflated (especially if accompanied by a pump) and they must be filled with considerable air pressure to be effective at all.

Advantages: Widely available; low cost; very portable; the non-inflatables take up minimal space; accommodates essentially all 750ml sized bottles.

Disadvantages: Only moderate protection–till susceptible to breaking and puncture/leaking; inflatables may take up considerable space and may burst with increases in cabin pressure.

Hard cases are reliable but large

Used by wine professionals who travel with multiple bottles for business (or if you don’t mind hauling an extra bag or possibly paying excess airline fees), by far the best armor for bottles is a hard case. These are larger, check-in luggage cases containing foam inserts meant to handle up to 12 bottles of wine, such as the VinGarde Valise  or Vino Voyage . These inflatable bottle bags store flat so they hardly take up any room in your suitcase when they are empty.

The downside is that you need to inflate them when you use them with the provided pump. It’s a little inconvenient but the result is possibly the most air-cushioned wine bottle protector.

The bags don’t seal so you are not protected against leaks if the bottle breaks. However, the method of inflating the bag with the creates such a well-padded bag that leaks are of little concern.

FlyingTrav Travel Wine Bags

The FlyingTrav is a different design of wine sleeve and offers an alternative to the pump style bags.

The inner bag is essentially a wine-bottle-shaped bag made of two layers of bubble wrap to cushion the bottle.

The outer bag functions to protect against spills if there is a bottle breakage. There is a double ziplock seal and a velcro flap to prevent liquids from leaking out if the bottle of wine is damaged during transport.

Since the cushioning is provided by bubble wrap there is no need to inflate these bags using a pump. That’s one less thing to pack and it’s convenient. However, the bubble wrap is a less effective cushion. It maybe be a good idea to use these wine sleeves but to also further cushion your wine bottles by wrapping the sleeves in your most chunky clothes.

The Jet Bag bottle bags are made in USA.

While they are billed as protective bags they don’t actually offer much protection against breakages. The unique thing about these bags is the absorbent diaper material inside the bag.

It’s a pity that they don’t have any cushioning to protect the bottles from breaking in the first place though.

I almost never check luggage. After losing multiple suitcases and spending far too many hours waiting in bag drop lines and baggage claim, I’ve become an extremely light packer to ensure everything I need fits securely in the plane’s overhead bin. I’ve been a drinks writer for three years, and I’ve had the opportunity to visit numerous vineyards and wineries across the country and around the world. And once I taste a bottle I love, I know I have to bring some home for my friends and family as souvenirs — and some for myself, for good measure. 

I’ve learned the hard way that this isn’t always an easy feat. For years, I wrapped my bottles in sweatshirts and towels as makeshift padding and hoped for the best. And perhaps unsurprisingly, I’ve had my fair share of bottles burst in transit — dyeing my clothes and toiletries a deep red hue. But just last year, I found a solution that’s inexpensive and actually works.

My favourite place in Moscow to relax with a glass of wine, coffee or a dinner with friends. In the summertime it is lovely to sit on the sidewalk cafe. The staff is very knowledgable about the wines, and always manages to find a wine... that suits us and surprises us. The wines are in all price classes, from very reasonable to exclusive. The food is delicious and averagely priced. I hope you will like this place as much as I do! More

Very unique place in Moscow with normal prices for wine and food but excellent service and very comfortable ambience. Even the simple dishes had a certain flair that made them quite special. Will definitely go back!

First you are drawn to the wine and intimate nature of the place. We started at the chairs outside overlooking the nice street, but then descended into the wine bar/shop and ate dinner. The food is excellent. Duck with smoked orange puree was mind blowing... as was the flank steak with the best mashed potatoes in the world-can't even describe how fluffy the were. They help you pick wine bottles or glasses that are in your price zone and the staff is excellent and warm. Go here and you will not be disappointed. Moreover the food prices are incredible low for such high quality food, I would have expected dishes to be $5 more. For example the duck was about $14. More

There are not only good wines, but the food is also great and the service wonderful. Try the lamb and beef tartar as the first course.

Classica Bar

Enjoying a glass of good wine paired with a delicious dish used to be the prerogative of wealthier members of Russian society. Luckily, in recent years “democratically-priced” wine establishments have been shattering this notion, and the intimate (with only nine tables) Classica Bar is the best example of this trend. Tucked away on the corner of the bustling Tverskaya-Yamskaya Street, Classica is a little oasis of fine wine (more than 70 varieties, with bottles starting at $20) and it comes with a Mediterranean style food menu. The focus is not on big wine brands but rather on the optimal price to quality ratio, and a large assortment from a wide variety of wine-making nations.

Sinners & Beginners

It’s certainly no sin to boast a collection of more than 300 wines, 60 of which can be ordered by the glass! Sinners & Beginners has the inviting vibe of a wine lovers living room and cellar. The interior is both funky and low key, while the patrons are a colorful mix of moms with their kids, business folk and young fashionistas. The brand chef is Italy’s Vincenzo Dilillo, meaning the menu is filled with all manners of carpaccio, bruschettas, pizzas, cheese, meat and veggie platters and dips. Wine-wise, you should try the trendy orange wine – or whatever else the staff might recommend.

This stylish neighborhood wine bar (5 minutes walk from Kurskaya metro station) surprises the first time visitor with a pleasant house red and white for $3 per glass, and $4 for a house sparkling. There are two wine menus to cater to the different types of wine imbibers. The first is divided into clearly marked sections with rather detailed explanations - for those who are not yet experts but are rather curious. The second is a several-page leaflet with nothing but the name, year and price. All together, you’ll find more than 200 wines on offer here. Of course, you’ll also find the fashionable orange, vegan and biodynamic here. In terms of food, the menu caters to virtually any taste (there are salads, soups and fish, meat, vegetarian and vegan options). And the best is that on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays Bigati Bar is open till 3:00 a.m.

Translated from Russian as “circus”, the name of this wine bar may be an ode to the Nikulin Moscow Circus that’s just around the corner – or it may just be an allusion to the ‘show’ that begins once the wine hits the brain. Tsirk is a bit hidden in the   pereulki   (alley ways) but it’s worth the effort to find it. The interior is laconic, almost Scandinavian, and the crowd is very artsy. There is no wine menu, but the knowledgeable waitresses are always on hand to advise you on what’s in stock; the average price for a bottle is about $30. Foodwise, Tsirk is aimed more at having a proper meal with generous-sized starters and hearty mains. On weekdays, slip out of the office and enjoy their business lunch deal ($6 for two courses, $8 for three courses) with a glass of wine for just $4).

Big Wine Freaks

Having firmly established themselves as one of the key authorities on wine in St. Petersburg, the people at Big Wine Freaks brought this wildly popular bar to Moscow at the end of 2017. Old World charm meets New World cool in this New York City loft-style interior. Biodynamic wines, craft champagnes and rare positions are the name of the game here, but if you want to play it safe and stick to something reliable there’s a great selection of wines from Europe and the New World (some available by the glass, starting from $7). The menu mostly consists of snacks suitable for wine drinking. A few heartier mains are on offer, too. In the evenings a DJ takes to the decks to make the joint even hipper.

Prosecco Bar PR11

Prosecco Bar is the bubbly baby of Italian chef Luigi La Sala and is as close as you’ll get to a traditional Venetian “bacaro” here in Moscow. The interior is simple and laconic in order not to distract from the wine and the company. Almost half of the wine menu consists of – surprise, surprise – prosecco. But if you’re no fan of bubbles, there are plenty of reds and whites, including biodynamic types, and the bar menu also has spirits and several types of spritzes. The food menu consists of perfect nibbles for wine (bruschettas, salads, tartares, prosciuttos and cheese), as well as heartier dishes such as soups, pastas and risottos. The average check comes to about $12-15 – not a big price to pay to enjoy classical aperitivo culture in the Russian capital.
