When you’re talking about SUVs, the 2021 Ford Expedition is almost a conversation in itself. There are plenty of reasons why these big Fords are consistently among the most popular of all SUVs.

With three roomy rows, an Expedition can carry up to eight people – or a heck of a lot of cargo. They’re more powerful than some trucks and have lots of features that make towing easier.

About the 2021 Ford Expedition

If you see an SUV described as a “workhorse,” it’s usually a stretch. But that’s not so in the case of the 2021 Ford Expedition. It’s at the top of its class in terms of being big and brawny. What’s more, it offers a smooth, comfortable, quiet ride that might make you feel like you’re riding in a car.

First launched in 1997, the Expedition has matured over the years into a real leader among SUVs. It’s powered by a turbocharged 3.5L V6 engine that provides 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque.

The wheelbase is 122.5 inches, and the overall length is 131.6 inches. The Expedition MAX, which was formerly known as the EL, is longer by nearly a foot. Ford designed this version specifically to compete with other mega-SUVs like the Chevrolet Suburban and the GMC Yukon.

Ford offers standard rear-wheel-drive, and four-wheel-drive is available as well. There are four different trims – King Ranch, XLT, Stealth, and Platinum. Gas mileage for the Expedition is estimated at 17 mpg on the highway and 23 in the city. Base retail prices range from $49,025 to $78,825, depending on the model and features.

How Much Can the 2021 Ford Expedition Tow? 

At the very minimum, the Expedition can pull 9,000 pounds. When equipped with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Package, the maximum increases to an impressive 9,300 pounds for the two-wheel-drive version.

This towing package includes a heavy-duty radiator, an electronic limited-slip differential, backup assist, and an integrated trailer brake controller.

Other factors affect the towing capacity, including the weight of your cargo and the number of passengers.

Do All Expeditions Have a Hitch? 

A hitch isn’t standard equipment for the 2021 Ford Expedition, but a hitch receiver is. If you don’t see the hitch receiver check the bumper for a plastic panel. Although, a hitch is provided with all Expeditions equipped with the trailer package. Plus, it has weight distribution capability.

2021 Ford Expedition is more powerful than some trucks and have lots of features that make towing easier.

Is the Ford Expedition a Good Towing Vehicle?

The Expedition won’t tow as much weight as a heavy-duty truck, but it leaves many vehicles in the dust. Additional features make the Ford Expedition a good choice as a tow vehicle. A system called AdvanceTrac helps to control trailer sway, and a Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) helps with visibility.

It also has large side-view mirrors and a tight turning radius, which is helpful when maneuvering a trailer.

That roominess we mentioned means lots of legroom and shoulder room so your passengers can stretch out comfortably. It also leaves lots of room for camping supplies. Standard wheelbase models have up to 20.9 cubic feet of space behind the third row. That expands to almost 64 cubic feet when you fold down the third row. Drop the second and third rows for a total of 104.6 cubic feet. The Expedition Max provides considerably more space for all of your camping supplies.

Can the 2021 Ford Expedition Tow a Travel Trailer? 

Does it have what it takes to tow a travel trailer? You betcha. In fact, it just may be the best SUV there is for towing. Though, this doesn’t mean you can hitch up the biggest rig.

Trailers up to 22 feet are typically safely within the towing range of the 2021 Ford Expedition.

Types of Travel Trailers the Expedition Can Tow

Fifth-wheel trailers are out of the question because of their design. You’d need a truck for them because the hitch coupler is actually inside the truck bed. Many toy haulers will be too much for an Expedition, but some are a safe bet. Small travel trailers, which are less than 22 feet, are typically safely within the towing range of the 2021 Ford Expedition.

Anyone towing a 6000+ lb travel trailer with an Expedition? What is your experience? Does it tow well, not tow well? Does it pull you or do you pull it? Does it wag at all? How's it going up hills (not mountains, but hills)? What year/model do you have and what WDH do you use? All help appreciated.

What year? First gens are rated to tow 8100lbs (IIRC). Later trucks, more. With a WDH it's fine. If the trailer is wagging the truck then there is too much weight on the tail of the trailer. Please search - there is a lot of threads like this on the site. You can get a lot of examples of towing here instead of waiting around for responses. HTH  

I have the '06 Expedition XLT 5.4 4x4 with a 3.73 gear ratio and a 4-speed transmission but it has the standard tow package with a class III hitch receiver. I'm looking to upgrade to the heavy-duty trans cooler (but not the heavy duty radiator) and I already installed the 7-pin connector and brake controller. I also have a WDH (which brings up the max rating on the class III hitch receiver to 950 lb tongue weight which is over the 860 lb max the Expedition can handle). I have reviewed about every thread out there on the internet related to this and while some have helped I'm still having trouble coming up with a max tow weight number that I'm comfortable with for my situation. I'm thinking (after upgrading the trans cooler) that a max GVWR I'm comfortable with for a trailer would be 7200 lb and a max tongue weight would be 720 lb. I came up with these numbers from the calculations below. Do they hold water? I'm also looking for feedback from those with similar vehicle specs who have real world towing experience close to those max numbers and how the trailer handles for them. Don't want a white knuckle ride (been there done that). Can anyone help me out? My calculations ------------------ TRAILER 7200 lb GVWR. (With tongue weight about 10% of total trailer, max tongue weight for Expedition is 860 lb and max trailer weight rating is 8600 lb GVWR. Take 15% off for safety and ease of towing cushion). TONGUE WEIGHT 860 lb (max rating) - 140 lb (15%+ cushion) = 720 lb GCWR 6580 lb (vehicle GVWR of 7300 lb minus my tongue weight of 720 lb) + 7200 lb (trailer GVWR) = 13780 lb (5% less than 14500 lb max rating) VEHICLE 7300 lb (GVWR) - 5600 lb (Vehicle weight) = 1700 lb (Cargo weight max for in vehicle) CARGO WEIGHT 720 lb (tongue weight for me) + 500 lb (3 extra passengers) + 300 lb (cargo in Expedition) = 1520 lb (under the 1700 so OK)

I tow a 2016 Jayco White Hawk 24RKS with a max trailer GVWR of 6500lbs. I use a WD hitch made by Husky HD Center Line #32217 with built in sway control. I went light to keep it easy on my ride. I'm running the 2014 Limited EL with a 5.4L, 3.73's and 6sp. You can feel the weight on hills but it holds its own. Read your tow guide for your year to see if you need to subtract weight rating based on options and when a WD hitch is required. Good luck.

My folks bought a 28' TT and while I haven't towed it yet, I will. its about 6400 lb dry. I have a `07 EL EB with the tow package so it should be no problem for it. The only thing I want to do is add the electric brake controller.

We’ve been waiting for a competitor to challenge the 2021 Ford Expedition , but it remains unchallenged as the best SUV for towing. The Ford Expedition serves as a spaces SUV with tons of comfort and plenty of power for hauling trailers, campers, boats, and more.

You can get started in a 2021 Ford Expedition for about $49,625. The 2021 Chevy Tahoe has an MSRP of $49,600, so it has a competitive price. But if the regular Expedition with up to eight seats doesn’t provide enough space, you can get the longer Max trim. 

The Expedition comes with a standard 3.5-liter V6 engine with 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. With the XLT Platinum trim, you get 400 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. 

All this muscle allows the Expedition to tow up to 9,300 lbs when properly equipped and carry a payload of up to 1,758 lbs. The Chevrolet Tahoe can tow up to 8,400 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,927 lbs. 

Does the Expedition have good towing tech? 

The 2021 Ford Expedition has an optional towing package that can be added to models equipped with four-wheel drive. It includes a four-pin and seven-pin connector with an integrated trailer brake control. 

It also includes a two-speed automatic 4WD with neutral towing capability and an upgraded radiator to enhance cooling. The upgraded electronic limited-slip differential and 3.73 axle ratio improve torque for towing and off-roading applications. 

Plus, you get the Pro Trailer Backup Assist feature. This helps you by automatically steering your trailer in the proper direction for you. All you have to do is twist the knob toward the direction that you want your trailer to go, and the system will handle the rest. 

Trailer sway control (TSC) comes standard with roll stability control. The system uses sensors to measure vehicle roll and turning rates to adjust the engine power and prevent sway to improve control. 

Also, the trailer length indicator is pretty neat. The length of the trailer is automatically measured to provide blind-spot coverage. This will help you become more aware of other vehicles around your trailer. 

Why do people like towing with the Ford Expedition?

Fans of the 2021 Ford Expedition enjoy it for its spacious and comfortable interior. There are multiple zones of lumbar support, and the second-row seats are plush. The third row is a little firm, but there’s plenty of room for adults. 

There are 20.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row with up to 104.6 cubic feet of storage space total. It’s easy to install child seats with plenty of room, and there’s tons of storage for your gear. 

You get an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 4G LTE hotspot. A rear-seat entertainment system is also available to keep the kids entertained. 

Captain chairs are available in the second row. Plus, each model has a power-folding third-row that can be controlled from the cargo area of the back seats. The second and third-row cold completely flat to create a level cargo floor too.

2020 Ford Expedition Limited Review: Towing an Enclosed Trailer, EcoBoost Shines

Let’s be real, most buyers of gigantic body-on-frame SUVs like the 2020 Ford Expedition would be better served by a large three-row crossover. They ride better, drive better, get better fuel economy, and are easier to live with day-to-day than their truck-based rivals. However, there is a specific market for which a large crossover won’t work best – the towing crowd. For those who tow, and either prefer the “lockable box” body of an SUV to a pickup or need to bring their family along for their journeys, SUVs like Ford’s Expedition are king.

The large, body-on-frame SUV segment isn’t very large (har har) and comprised of relatively few makes and models, mostly domestic. Ford introduced the Expedition to the world in the late 1990s, and the 2020 Expedition Limited they sent me is the latest and greatest fourth-generation model, which debuted for 2018.

Of course, I promptly hooked my enclosed trailer to the Expedition and set off for our first race weekend of 2020 at Summit Point Motorsports Park.

What Is It?

This is a 2020 Ford Expedition Limited. All of these body-on-frame SUVs are loosely based on pickup trucks of the same make, and the Expedition is no exception. It shares wheelbase with a single-cab, 6.5′ bed Ford F-150 pickup. Running gear is also shared with the F-150 lineup , and the dashboard will be familiar to those with seat time in Ford’s popular pickup.

The “Limited” trim is top-tier on Ford’s trucks, but is toward the bottom of the lineup on Expedition, sitting just above the base XLT. King Ranch and Platinum are “above” Limited, though any of the three trim levels can be well-equipped based on personal taste. Every 2020 Expedition is powered by Ford’s 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6 . My Expedition Limited produced 375 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 470 lb-ft of torque at 2,250 rpm. Moving to top-trim Platinum adds a performance-tuned version of the same V6, producing another 25 horsepower and 10 lb-ft.

Every EcoBoost V6 is paired to Ford’s 10R80 10-speed transmission, and while the Expedition can be had in two-wheel (rear) drive, most will come equipped with four-wheel drive, which has an automatic mode, or can be locked in to high and low ranges as needed.

My Expedition Limited had plenty of standard equipment but was sparsely optioned otherwise, only adding the “301A” package (CoPilot 360 driver assitance, navigation, panoramic sunroof) and FX4 off-road package (wheels, tires, skid plates, limited-slip 3.73 axle ratio). Total MSRP was a few dollars shy of $72,000. Strangely missing were LED headlights, which come as part of the costly “302A” package, or can be added a-la carte for $740.

Towing with the 2020 Ford Expedition Limited

Every 2020 Expedition is rated to tow a minimum of 6,600 lbs, and they all come with a hitch receiver hidden behind a plastic panel on the bumper. Ford does offer the “Heavy Duty Trailer Tow” package, which increases the tow rating to 9,300 lbs . Key differences with Heavy Duty Trailer Tow include a heavy-duty radiator, integrated trailer brake controller, and limited-slip 3.73 axle gearing. Buyers also get Ford’s Pro Trailer Backup Assist, which is helpful unless you already know how to back a trailer, in which case it may be annoying.

Though my Expedition was not equipped with the Heavy Duty Trailer Tow package, the FX4 package did provide the same axle gearing and limited-slip rear. I used a Tekonsha Prodigy RF trailer brake controller, as my Expedition was missing the integrated controller. Having used it on other Ford trucks, it is excellent and worth the money.

It’s also worth mentioning my Expedition was the shorter of the two Ford sells, with a 122.5″ wheelbase. The Expedition Max adds overall length and wheelbase, the latter coming in at 131.6″, a sizable difference.

My enclosed trailer measures 27′ from hitch to tail, with about 20′ of trailer box and 4′ of V-nose. Aluminum construction cuts weight, and fully loaded, it squeaked under the Expedition’s rated capacity by a few pounds. I used a weight-distributing hitch to send some tongue weight to the front axle of the truck.

In general, the 2020 Expedition handled the trailer very well. Power from the EcoBoost V6 was ample and delivered flawlessly, even pulling the trailer up steep grades. The 10-speed transmission has plenty of ratios to keep the engine in its power and torque “sweet spots,” instead of screaming at redline or lugging low in the revs. Ford’s Tow/Haul drive mode continues to impress, automatically downshifting on downhill grades and using engine braking to maintain speed and reduce heat generated in the brakes.

Were I purchasing an Expedition for myself, I’d choose the Expedition Max. I never had any scary moments with stability, but could feel the trailer bob a bit and threaten (ever so slightly) to push the truck around. More wheelbase from the Expedition Max would simply add a larger margin of error to the towing equation.

Driving the 2020 Ford Expedition, Without a Trailer

SUVs like the Expedition really shine when they’re used as trucks-with-bedcaps. In the Expedition’s case, its F-150 roots are readily apparent with minimal changes. The Expedition was exceptionally maneuverable, though, thanks to the steering rack that just kept turning and turning. Past the steering, it uses an independent rear suspension (instead of leaf springs) for better ride quality and more interior volume than competitors with leafs. Ultimately, it still drives… like a truck that can turn a little tighter and ride a hair softer.

For some, that’s not a bad thing. It’s a reminder of the capability and that capability is used often enough to justify the general trucky vibe. Others just like that feeling.

It’s worth noting the MSRP of the Expedition pushes it well into luxury-big-crossover territory. My colleague was testing a new Audi Q7, with a near-identical MSRP, when I was reviewing this Expedition. Although Ford’s Bang & Olufsen sound system is excellent, CoPilot 360 is one of the better driver assistance suites I’ve used, and the seats are comfortable for long drives, the whole package doesn’t really scream “luxury,” even if it’s priced that way. Granted, a Q7 won’t tow 9,300 pounds of trailer, and I’m not sure I’d eagerly put 6,500 pounds behind it either.

A Torquey, Top-Notch Performer

I found the fourth-generation Expedition to be a tremendous leap forward when it was introduced in 2018. Two years later, it remains very competitive in the segment (yes, that Audi was nice, but it’s a different class of vehicle). Ford’s EcoBoost V6 is such an excellent drivetrain, whether towing or unloaded, which keeps this 2020 Expedition feeling relatively fresh.

Recently, though, General Motors announced their next generation of Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon, which further distinguish themselves from their pickup truck roots.

Ford recently unveiled the new 2021 F-150 , and I am curious to see if and when the Expedition will receive updates to match. Even with increased competition from GM, the 2020 Ford Expedition is a great offering for those looking to haul people and a trailer at the same time. Its drivetrain is the shining star of the whole package, and the rest of the package is nearly as bright.

What Size Travel Trailer Can A Ford Expedition Pull?

That Ford Expedition that you bought is a beautiful vehicle, and you are really looking forward to getting out on the road with it. So, what is going to be the best travel trailer choice for you? We've done the research to bring you the answer. 

Depending on the model and the type of hitch the vehicle is equipped with, a Ford Expedition can pull between 6,000 and 9,300 pounds. The Expedition can pull between 6,000 to 9,300 pounds, and the Expedition MAX can pull between 6,300 and 9,000 pounds. 

There are other things to consider than just the maximum towing capacity, and we are going to have a look at those here. We are also going to present you with some ideas for great trailers that you can buy to go with your Ford Expedition. So be sure to keep reading. 

Model Towing Capacity

The actual towing capacity determines whether your Ford Expedition can pull your trailer of choice. Let's begin with the figures, as provided by Ford here .

Dry Weight Vs. Real Weight

When you are looking at dry weight, what you are looking at is the travel trailer with absolutely nothing in it, no water or anything.

Add in the water that you may be able to take in the tanks, any propane you may need, and any other equipment, which seems to add up to about 1,500 lbs for an average RVer. With those components, you have the real weight, or gross weight .

You need to know what both are for your trailer so that when you are thinking about purchasing one, you know whether or not the trailer is going to come in under the maximum towing capacity that your Expedition has. To be safe, you are also going to want to make sure that you have some amount of cushioning between the real weight of the trailer and the towing capacity. This gives you a safety margin.

Tongue Weight Capacity

Tongue capacity is the downward force that the tongue of the trailer applies to the hitch of the tow vehicle. This is a great indicator of the amount that you can safely tow with your vehicle.

The tongue weight capacity needs to be between 10% and 15% of the load that you are towing. So, with a weight of 4,000 lbs, you want a tongue weight capacity between 400 and 600 lbs.

Why Is Cushioning A Great Idea?

Cushioning allows for not only any weight that you add during your trip but also gives you some leeway in non-optimum conditions. Pushing it right up to the limit assumes that you are going to have perfect conditions the whole way.

Whereas calculating your dry weight and your real weight are easy. Seeing where they are in relation to your towing capacity means that the amount of cushion that you want to leave is something that is more about personal preference.

A lot of people talk about leaving a 10% or 20% margin. Some RVers are looking at the duration of the journey or any terrain that they are going through to determine how much cushion they are going to need. Mountainous area? Allow more. Going to be doing a lot of towing? RVers are recommending to allow a little more.

Exceeding the towing capacity is strongly advised against. In the short term, it could put you at risk if you have also exceeded your vehicle's braking capacity. And if you are new to towing a trailer, it is definitely going to make it harder to steer. You are not just putting yourself at risk either, you could be endangering others on the road.

The long-term effects could be tire problems, damage to the trailer’s frame, and even engine issues.

5 Great Lightweight Travel Trailers For Your Ford Expedition

The next heaviest trailer is this beautiful entry from Forest River, which weighs in with a dry weight of 3,786 lbs. You get the option of a queen-sized bed, or bunks with storage, and a dinette. There are some great configurations that are available that do not affect the dry weight significantly but are going to increase your comfort levels. This entry is 17 ft long.

Rockwood Mini-Lite

Our third trailer is 25 ft box and 29 ft total and is 4,800 lbs without gear and water. There are 10 different configurations that you can choose from. This means there is some variation in this model, but it is definitely not going to pose a problem for your Ford Expedition. You get wifi, a microwave, tinted bonded frameless windows, and some other great features as standard.

Our fourth entry weighs 5,541 lbs and is 27' 7" long, and sleeps 6-8. There are a number of configurations that are available within the towing capacity range of your Expedition. It can sleep up to 10, it has a 13,500 BTU air conditioner, backup camera prep, foot pedal flush toilet, and some other wonderful details.

Salem Hemisphere 24BH

This entry is a little bit heavier than the other entries, at 5,118 lbs dry, but it is designed to be wind-resistant, and give you a smoother ride and better gas mileage. You are going to have to think with its real weight and whether it is going to totally work with your towing capacity.

It comes with some great standard features like push-back recliners, oversized bunks, tall wardrobes, etc. You can get a dinette, an exterior kitchen/bar, and an extra-large refrigerator as an option, just to name a few things. It is 24ft long, and it looks great.

How Does The Expedition Compare To Other Suvs When It Comes To Towing Capacity?

As you will see from the comparison table below, the Ford Expedition leads the pack by a very respectable margin. This is great news for anyone that is using it to tow an RV because that huge towing capacity totally opens up the range of RVs that you can choose from. You can pull some of the heavier RVs out there and you are not going to have to worry about coming anywhere near your towing capacity.

Bear in mind though that this is the towing capacity after it has been increased, and that without the optional Heavy Duty Towing Package, you are looking at a maximum towing capacity that comes in under the lowest amount of its competitors. You are going to have to judge whether that extra expense is worth it or not. Given the options in different RVs, it opens up for you.

What Hitch Can You Use With A Ford Expedition?

You need a Class 3 trailer hitch with your Ford Expedition. A receiver hitch is pretty easy to install if you are a first-time user, and also a great option for anyone that wants an easy installation.

Lots Of Towing Power Means Lots Of Options

The Ford Expedition is a beautiful-looking and very powerful vehicle, and that may be enough to sell you on it as the best option for you when it comes to towing your RV around. Add in that optional towing package and the Expedition leaps out ahead of its competitors with towing capacity. The extra amount it affords is no joke when it comes to increasing the different types of RV that you can pull comfortably behind your vehicle.

The Ford Expedition doesn’t get the best gas mileage compared to other SUVs on the market, 17 mpg in the city, and 22 mpg on the highway, and that is obviously going to be affected by how much weight you are pulling. It is a really dependable and powerful vehicle that is designed to get you out on the road, and able to take your RV with you, without having to worry that you are going to be pushing the vehicle to capacity.

Towing with a 2017 Ford Expedition EL

Hi all,  so we haven't ordered an Oliver yet,  as my wife is hesitant due to the cost,  but it appears that our Ford Expedition could tow a LE2 very easily.   It's rated at 6,600 pounds of tow capability.   The LE2 weighs about 4,600 pounds if I recall.   How would that tv do out west going up our mountains.   Is 6,600 pounds the tow ability crossing the plains with a strong tail wind or is that real world towing.   A lot of freeways max out about 6% grade here in the west I think.   At what point would our tv cry uncle!?   I rode my bicycle across the country twice and some grades were up to 13-15%.  Could our tv handle that?

On average, a fully loaded Elite II will weigh in at 6000 pounds or more. Personally, I'd consider a 6600 pound towing capacity extremely marginal. Plus, your cargo carrying capacity would be very limited as the tongue weight of the Oliver will be about 600 pounds.

All that said, it would easily handle the weight of the Elite and be a reasonably good tow vehicle for it. 

Many owners are towing with a 2500 3/4 ton diesel vehicle. Some are even using 3500 1 ton vehicle. At the end of the day, you're gonna need a bigger truck for an Elite II.

We towed with a 2017 Expedition EL initially.  It was ok for towing as equipped with the Ford factory max tow package, but on long steep grades the 3.5 liter V6 eco-boost engine was really working hard.  And your tow rating of 6,600 sounds really low to tow an Elite II.    The 4,600 lbs Elite II weight number you quoted is the empty dry weight without any options, with empty tanks, and with no personal belongings, food, etc.  Most people end up well over  5,000 lbs if not closer to 6,000 lbs.  Do you have the full factory max tow package?  Ours as equipped with the Ford factory max tow package was rated at 9,000 lbs towing or so.  But it did require the Andersen weight distribution hitch.   But we upgraded though to a Ford F-250 because of cargo / payload capacity.  Most people overlook that rating in their tow vehicle selection.  Check the sticker on your Expedition driver’s door jamb for the cargo/payload capacity.  Ours was only about 1,500 lbs.  And with 2 adults plus luggage, a loaded cooler of food, camping gear plus the tongue weight of the Oliver of 500 to 600 lbs, and you’ll find that you hit your cargo / payload limit pretty quickly.   The F-250 as ours is equipped has 12,600 lbs towing and 3,334 lbs payload capacity. And it doesn’t require the Andersen weight distribution hitch.

There's at least one person here who has put his e2 on a diet, and kept his weight under 5000 lbs. Tows in the Appalachian mountains with a small truck.

I looked at driver's door jam.   It lists 7600 gvwr.   It does have the tow package.   It will be an easier sell to my wife if we don't have to get a different vehicle.   I am not sure if I answered your question. 

That's your gross vehicle weight rating and is not the information you're looking for. Look for the tire sticker and it will have a line that says ..."the weight of occupants and cargo should not exceed xxxx pounds"  This is your cargo carrying capacity.

Remember that the weight of everything you've added to the vehicle or put into the vehicle comes out of the cargo carrying capacity (CCC). 

i.e. for two adults, between 300 and 400 pounds or whatever your actually weigh. The tongue weight of the trailer, easily 500-600 pounds for the EII. Those two things will usually eat up about half of the CCC.

Then there's everything else, cell phones, pets, all your camping gear, clothes not stored in the trailer, the hitch and ball you put into the receiver. This includes literally everything that was not attached to the car when you picked it up new.

The GVWR is the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and that number includes the weight of the vehicle itself.  That is not the cargo / payload rating.  As mentioned above, look for the sticker that looks like this with the “never exceed” number.

So, the two go hand in hand. 

If you put the e2 on a diet, get the trailer and tongue weight down by transferring storage to the tow vehicle,  you still have limits, because of your vehicle' cargo capacity .

With the longer wheelbase, high base curb weight, and the probability it’s based on a half ton truck chassis I think it might make a great tow vehicle. I wouldn’t give up on it too quickly. What is the payload of your EL?

The combined weight of occupants and cargo should not exceed 1408 pounds.   I weigh 200, my wife weighs 140.  I think the hitch weight is 700 pounds on the LE2.  We would probably have about 6000 pounds in the trailer with water, clothes and food.   Usually with our tent trailer we just hook up to city water at the cg.   We haven't done boondocking with our tent trailer.   I foresee doing mostly state parks and hooking up to water and electricity.   I am thinking of the composting toilet so wouldn't use the black tank.   Does this sound doable?

It has the heavy duty tow package as it's a Limited trim package with the 7 prong connector and the manual brake adjuster.   For 2017, the deciding factor if it has the heavy duty tow package is the 7 prong connector.   Maybe I am OK after all.

Dad's Expedition was a 1998 built on the 1/2 ton, long bed truck chassis.  With the seats folded, the cargo space of the Expedition was the same size as a pickup bed, able to carry full sheets of plywood.  This from Trailers.com

  When we debated whether to keep it or not, I researched new Expeditions.  At the time (around 2015) I was told the new Expeditions were not built on the pickup chassis, but rather a mini-van chassis.  I don't know if this is true or is still the case.  We opted for a BMW X5-300d instead.

It looks like my 2017 EL Limited has a towing capacity of 9200 pounds.   I think that I will be OK with it.   I like the vehicle and I can get whole sheets of 4x8 plywood.   Thanks for your comments.   Now to get my wife on the same page.   She is still talking about an R-Pod and I am thinking Oliver LE2.

Based on your supplied numbers, you have the capacity for 368 more pounds of cargo in your vehicle. Be careful, it won't take long to get there. I would not try to shift weight from the vehicle to the trailer since you're already so close to your max tow rating.

You should be fine with those specs. However, when ordering your unit you’ll probably want to avoid the front basket and go with the rear hitch carrier instead. Resist the urge to fill the back of your tow vehicle and instead pack it into the camper.

We have been towing our LE2 @ 4950 pound ready to camp with less than 500 pound tongue weight with a new mid-sized pickup in the Appalachian mountains, heading to a 5000' elevation campground next. Tested on up to 8% grades so far. Will reveal results later and vehicle when finished testing, unless seen by someone here in a TN/NC mountain campground first.

Added airbags to the rear differential to reduce rear sag. Everyone tows differently, but when we're in the mountains, get in the slow lane with the big trucks going up and down grades. We keep Ollie light and our TV under gross weight with Ollie connected.

9200 is plenty, just pack more of your stuff in the trailer, keeping in mind that your tongue weight goes up proportionally (about 10%). NOT buying the tongue tray helps in this regard, keep the TW as low as practical. You still may run out of cargo load capacity in the Ford, but the towing number is fine. Try it for a season, then decide if it is going to be good long term TV.

FYI if you don’t need all that extra seating, remove the third and possibly second row seats and store them. Together that might give you another 150 pounds of cargo load. Plus more actual space…. Install a cargo barrier and be safe. These are most excellent. They weigh nothing and can be rolled down and stored on the floor when not needed.

There's an option for a weight distribution hitch.   Anderson I think.   That seems to be a good idea.   What are your thoughts on that option?

Most likely it would be required due to the TW and also to minimize passenger discomfort on bumpy roads. I would order it, for sure. There are countless Andersen hitch threads, search and do some reading. It is the only WD hitch approved by Oliver.
