25 states Americans visit the most

U.S. travelers are expected to visit U.S. destinations more in 2023 than they did before the COVID-19 pandemic, according to data from the World Travel and Tourism Council. Thanks in part to rising inflation rates, which make international travel far more difficult to budget for a family, along with the general public's desire to freely move about now that COVID-19 restrictions are fully lifted. Combining that with the plethora of places to choose from when it comes to making your way across America, domestic travel rates went up 30.1% in 2022, and it seems to be on trend to continue its ascent.

With so much to do, however, who could blame someone for wanting to get in the car and leave their cares behind during an epic road trip? For booking that last-minute flight on a whim because the mood seems to strike. The U.S. is home to 424 National Parks, 620 amusement parks , over 35,000 museums , and don't even get us started on how many restaurants there are to try!

As summer approaches, and many are beginning to plot out their itineraries for the road, we wondered—which states are the most popular to visit by U.S. tourists? Using data from YouGov to determine what states Americans are visiting, Stacker has ranked the top 25 by the percentage of U.S. adults who have already made a visit. #21. Oklahoma (tie)

In a state full of early American history, Oklahoma City visitors can take the opportunity to learn about the state's 39 Native American nations in Oklahoma by visiting the First Americans Museum . Tulsa's museum Greenwood Rising tells visitors about the city's Black neighborhood, Greenwood, a once-historic space known as a freedom colony after slavery was abolished. The area, lauded as Black Wall Street, was infamously bombed in 1921 during an incident known as the Tulsa Race Massacre .

Travelers who like visiting the cultural landmarks listed among the bevy of UNESCO World Heritage sites can see more here than in any other U.S. state. In order to achieve UNESCO World Heritage status , a place must be a work of human genius, contain superlative natural phenomena, or any of the eight other requirements on the qualifications list. The sites located in New Mexico, such as Carlsbad Caverns National Park, Chaco Culture National Historical Park, and Taos Pueblo all manage to fit the criteria!

While Missouri may be most well known for the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, many are unaware upon first glance that the museum housed beneath the landmark is full of history about the "Show Me State" including how it got the nickname. Don't be fooled though, Missouri offers so much more. Branson, for example, is known as the " Live Entertainment Capital of the World " per their tourism site because of the amount of entertainment that is accessible at any given time, and the state has six national parks you can visit .

Michigan offers a mixture of natural beauty, history, and culture all wrapped up in one state. Visitors often make their way to Detroit to visit the Motown Museum , where curators pay homage to a form of music that, in essence, created the blueprint for all other music to follow. Home to four of the Great Lakes (Erie, Superior, Huron, and Michigan) travelers can also enjoy a car-free adventure—including a side trip to Mackinac Island , home to Arch Rock. Speaking of the cuisine, culinary tourists can head to Charleston, which is known for making a killer bowl of shrimp and grits. For a sweet treat, the brown sugar and butter explosion known as Charleston chewies is the local favorite. Both of these borrow heavily from the influence of the Gullah Geechee , descendants of West and Central Africa forced upon the lands during the trade of enslaved people, and who have been well known for preserving and maintaining their cultural heritage.

What to do in New York

US tourism top states stats round-up post

The most notable trend is travelers’ desire to spend more time outdoors. They’re helping revive the tourism industry in states like Utah and Arizona, where state and national parks are plentiful. Meanwhile, Florida’s booming theme park industry and accessible beaches are driving an exceptional recovery for the state.

This is good news for tour and attraction operators. The uptick in visitors to your state will translate to more bookings and revenue for your travel business.

If you’re not sure how your state is faring, here are all the U.S. tourism statistics by state that you need to know.

What US states spend the most on tourism? 

Historically, Hawaii, Florida, and California were the top three states that spent the most on tourism. Texas, Michigan, and New York were also among the top spenders.

Over the past five years, state tourism funding has increased by 20% across the board. States spend, on average, $22 million on tourism initiatives to attract tourists and generate visitor spending.

Most states took a major step back in tourism spending during the pandemic, but now, they’re jumping back into the marketing game.   Twenty-nine states ramped up their tourism budgets during the 2021-2022 fiscal year, including Colorado, Florida, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, and Washington.

Hawaii and Florida were among the top spenders: In 2022, Hawaii secured a $60 million tourism budget, while Florida had over $80 million to work with, including $30 million in federal stimulus money. 

How much of Florida’s economy is tourism-driven?

Nationwide, travel and tourism are major drivers of economic activity. The tourism industry is responsible for 2.9% of the U.S. GDP.

That number is even higher in Florida, where tourism represents 10% of the state’s overall GDP. The industry supports nearly 13% of the state’s jobs.

In 2019, Florida welcomed 131 million out-of-state visitors, 10% of which were international. In total, visitors spent $98.8 billion and helped generate $27.6 billion in federal, state, and local taxes.

The total economic impact amounted to $96.5 billion in 2019.

How much of Hawaii’s economy is tourism-driven? 

Hawaii is also heavily reliant on tourism. The travel industry represents about a quarter of the state’s economy.

Over 10 million tourists traveled to Hawaii in 2019, which is over seven times the state’s population. Visitors spent $17.8 billion and contributed over $2 billion in tax revenue.

Top 10 fastest-growing US states for tourism 

Theme parks, casinos, and parks are fueling a strong tourism rebound in these 10 states.

The state is quickly catching up to pre-pandemic visitation numbers and even setting new records. In 2021, Florida welcomed nearly 118 million domestic visitors, the highest level in state history. This was great news for the hotel industry, which is already generating revenue at pre-pandemic levels. The state’s total hotel revenue hit a record in 2021 at $17.3 billion, a 2% increase from 2019.

2. Tennessee

Tennessee’s tourism industry is already setting post-pandemic records. In 2021, visitors spent a record $24 billion traveling through the state. That breaks down to $66 million daily, a 44% increase from the year prior.

3. Virginia

The shift toward outdoor and adventure travel has increased park attendance across the U.S. In Virginia, nearly 8 million people visited the region’s 41 state parks in 2021, a 15% increase from 2019.

4. Arkansas

Similarly, the tourism growth seen in Arkansas is driven by its parks. The state welcomed just over 41 million visitors in 2021, surpassing the 36.3 million that came in 2019. Hot Springs National Park had over 2 million recreational visits in 2021, topping the previous visitation record set in 1970. 

Utah’s strong rebound can be attributed to the popularity of the “Might Five,” which is the nickname given to Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, and Zion National Parks. The five parks welcomed 11.2 million recreation visits in 2021, and all but Bryce Canyon National Park had a record-breaking year. 

Wyoming had a big tourism year in 2021. Visitors spent $4 billion, which helped generate $243 million in tax revenue — a 50% increase from 2020. Yellowstone National Park welcomed a record number of visitors (nearly 5 million).

Tourism in Maine has rebounded to pre-pandemic levels. In fact, tourism was up 25% in the first five months of 2022 compared to the same period in 2019. Meanwhile, visitor spending was up 18% in May of this year over May 2019. In 2021, over 15.6 million visitors flocked to the state, an increase of 29% from 2020.

Montana’s state parks welcomed a record-setting number of visitors in 2020. That trend continued into the following year when visitors spent $5.15 billion while traveling through the state, a billion dollars more than they spent in 2019.

In 2021, Arizona outpaced the national rate in terms of visitor spending and overnight stays. The state recovered 87% of its overnight visitation and 92% of its visitor spending rate from pre-pandemic times. Overnight visitors spent $23.6 billion across the state in 2021.

Las Vegas is fueling a strong tourism rebound in Nevada. This past February was the best in history for Vegas, with $1.1 billion of casino winnings recorded. Meanwhile, monthly passenger traffic at Harry Reid International Airport more than doubled in February compared to a year ago.

What are the top 10 least-visited states in the US? 

Alaska,  Nebraska, and Vermont are among the least visited states in the U.S.

Yet even these states are growing in popularity as domestic travel returns in full force. Visitors flocked to the Alaskan outdoors this summer, boosting demand for hotels and car rentals. Meanwhile, Nebraska’s lodging tax revenue hit an all-time record this year. And as autumn rolls around, Vermont is gearing up to welcome hordes of leaf-peeping tourists .

These are the top 10 least visited states in the U.S. — at least for now:

• Alaska: 2.26 million  
• West Virginia: 3.96 million
• Nebraska: 6.5 million
• Wyoming: 8.1 million (Despite being one of the least visited states, record visitation at Yellowstone National Park in 2021 have propelled Wyoming’s tourism industry forward.)
• Delaware: 9.2 million
• Montana: 12.5 million (Montana’s state parks welcomed a record number of visitors in 2020, putting the state’s natural beauty on the map.)
• New Hampshire: 12.8 million
• Vermont: 13 million
• South Dakota: 14.5 million
• Maine: 15.6 million (Despite being one of the least-visited states, tourism was up 25% in the first five months of this year compared to the same period in 2019.)

I've visited all 50 states solo. These are the 8 places I'd pick for a relaxing, low-key vacation.

• After traveling solo to all 50 US states, I've found some great places to relax and unwind.
• I love visiting coastal towns in California, Oregon, and Maine.
• I also enjoy disconnecting in Taos, New Mexico, and Homer, Alaska.

Over the past decade, I've traveled to all 50 US states and spent time in tons of major cities and small towns. I've also driven solo across the country several times, stopping in some of the most unique and beautiful places the United States has to offer.

Although I love finding a heart-pumping adventure or bustling city to explore, there's nothing quite like a getaway meant for relaxation. Turns out I'm not alone in this thought, as more and more travelers gravitate toward relaxing getaways .

Although relaxation can sometimes be more of a state of mind than a physical place, some destinations I've visited have made it easier to embrace a low-key and laid-back attitude than others.

Here are eight places I'd recommend for a relaxing getaway.

California's Sonoma Coast is more tranquil than the state's touristy areas.

California's Sonoma Coast is home to some of the state's most dramatic scenery. With towering cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, rolling hills covered in vineyards, and ancient redwood forests, this is where I love to visit to simply immerse myself in nature.

Unlike the more touristy areas in Southern California , the beaches here are generally less crowded and more peaceful. I love to drive the coast to lunch in Bodega Bay, relax on the sand at Goat Rock Beach while listening to the sound of the waves, and enjoy the fresh ocean air.

Taos, New Mexico, is the perfect spot to unwind.

Taos, a small historic town in northern New Mexico, is the spot I always return to for a relaxing and low-key getaway.

Nestled amid the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Taos has some of the most breathtaking landscapes I've ever encountered and is the perfect spot to watch a sunrise or sunset.

I love spending a few nights in a short-term rental or a vintage camper reading, relaxing, and visiting nearby hot springs and art galleries.

It's easy to disconnect in Homer, Alaska.

Nestled on the tip of the Kenai Peninsula , Homer, Alaska, feels very peaceful and low-key.

The majestic mountains, glaciers peeking out in the distance, and stunning coastline dotted with islands make Homer visually stunning, with a charming downtown and opportunities to explore.

There are many outdoor-adventure opportunities here, but visitors can just as easily have a slower-paced vacation and truly disconnect.

Spend time exploring the coastline, take a scenic boat tour, and savor the local seafood — all with a tranquil view.

Pacific City, Oregon, offers a laid-back vibe with local shops, art galleries, and cafés.

The Oregon Coast, as a whole, is the perfect destination for a relaxing, low-key getaway, but one of my favorite spots is Pacific City.

This quaint spot with a laid-back vibe has lots of local shops, art galleries, friendly cafés, and local restaurants to keep me busy between trips to the magnificent coastline.

Home to Haystack Rock and the stunning Cape Kiwanda scenic headland, you don't have to go far to find the natural beauty. Many hotels and rentals in the area even offer ocean views.

Lake Toxaway is North Carolina's private hidden gem.

Located in North Carolina, Lake Toxaway is one of the most beautiful places you likely haven't heard of.

The stunning lake, surrounded by lush forests and rolling hills, is a true respite. With access granted only to homeowners, short-term renters, and guests at The Greystone Inn, the lake offers exceptional opportunities for rest.

Although there are opportunities for hiking, biking, and water sports, the beauty of Lake Toxaway is that you can do as much or as little as you please.

Avila Beach, California, is the perfect escape from California's big cities.

Avila Beach is my favorite spot in Central California. Located between Los Angeles and San Francisco, this community is the picture of relaxation.

The quaint enclave is an escape from California's big cities and offers a relaxed vibe and friendly atmosphere. Explore local shops and galleries, grab a cup of coffee and a pastry at a waterfront café, or indulge in fresh seafood at a harborside restaurant — all at a leisurely pace.

Avila Beach also has hot springs and wineries nearby, which make the perfect additions to any low-key getaway.

Carefree, Arizona, offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

With a name like Carefree, it's no surprise you'll find low-key tranquility in this Arizona town. Offering a unique combination of desert beauty, wellness opportunities, and proximity to the Phoenix metro area, it is the perfect place to unwind.

Carefree sits at the edge of the Sonoran Desert, offering a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, and has become a hub for wellness seekers.

Several well-known wellness resorts and spas are located either in town or nearby, offering amenities and opportunities for rest and relaxation.

Take a scenic hike through McDowell Sonoran Preserve, or simply relax by the pool at your resort, soaking up the Arizona sunshine.

Coastal Maine offers a breathtaking and relaxing escape.

No list of relaxing getaways would be complete without Coastal Maine. The rugged coastline of Maine, with its rocky cliffs, sandy beaches, and quaint harbor villages, offers a genuinely breathtaking and relaxing escape.

With many hidden coves and less-frequented stretches of sand, it's easy to find your own peaceful spot to soak up the sun, listen to the rhythm of the waves, and truly unwind.

Before a leisurely stroll along the coast, spend your days visiting the picturesque towns dotting the coastline and savoring fresh seafood and lobster rolls.

Adding tourism to the Concurrent List: Pros and cons

Move may prove controversial in Kerala, but has been sought for by industry figures

The Central government is planning to add tourism to the Concurrent List of the Constitution. The Ministry of Tourism has initiated the move, originally a proposal from the parliamentary standing committee on tourism headed by Rajya Sabha MP T.G.Venkatesh.

The move could particularly benefit the COVID-plagued hotel industry in the country as it could lead to rationalisation of property and other taxes, getting industry status across the board, as well as lower rates on electricity and water. Presently, these local charges come under the purview of states. 

But this could also very well lead to another Centre vs states skirmish, and allegations of yet another attempt by the Modi government to encroach into the powers and authority of states. Technically, "tourism" is not designated in the state or union list, so many of the local laws and levies that apply to it are administered by state and district administrations.

It could be of particularly high sensitivity in opposition-ruled states like Kerala, where tourism is one of the biggest revenue earners.

“Being in concurrent list is not seen as taking away the powers of the state,” argues M.P.Bezbaruah, Secretary-General of the Hotel Association of India, “Like other subjects on the Concurrent List, this will enable the centre to bring in harmonious policies for the betterment of tourism in consultation with the states.”

The move by the tourism ministry follows a recommendation by the parliamentary standing committee on tourism. In its action taken report tabled in parliament on Tuesday, the committee noted that “the proposed measure will provide a level playing field to all the hotels which have been badly hit by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.”

Including tourism in the concurrent list has been a long-pending demand of the organised hospitality industry, with the CII putting it in its wish-list for this year’s budget. Explains Bezbaruah, “It will make coordination better and give de jure recognition to what is being de facto tried by the government. This could result in positive impact like tourist arrivals.”

According to the International Trade Administration, overseas tourists contributed $233.5 billion to the US economy in 2019. In 2022, the company reported a revenue of $17.1 billion, reflecting an increase of $6 billion from the previous year. Our Methodology

To determine the 25 states with highest tourism revenue in the US, we referred to data provided by the International Trade Administration. The states were shortlisted, taking into account the number of visitors, as a strong correlation exists between heightened visitor numbers and revenue generation. We have ranked the states in ascending order of both the number of visitors and their respective market shares in the US tourism industry.

Market share: 0.7%

Visitation figures 2022: 168,000

Indiana has gained recognition for its association with auto racing, particularly hosting the renowned Indianapolis 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Indiana also boasts a cost of living that is 10% below the national average.

24. Wisconsin

Ministry bats for tourism’s inclusion in concurrent list

This move will allow both centre and the states to formulate policies that could benefit the sector which has faced severe setback due to the covid-19 pandemic.

Taking the key demand of hospitality and tourism sector ahead, the ministry of tourism has initiated a proposal for inclusion of tourism in the Concurrent List of the Constitution. This move will allow both Centre and the states to formulate policies that could benefit the sector which has faced severe setback due to the covid-19 pandemic.

“The Ministry of Tourism has taken up the issue of inclusion of tourism in the Concurrent List with the ministry concerned, so that tourism can be placed on the national agenda," said the tourism ministry in a reply to a Parliamentary Standing Committee whose report was tabled in Parliament on Tuesday.

Currently, the travel and tourism sector is largely treated as a state subject. However, multiple industry bodies including Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) suggested that the sector needed to be included in the Concurrent list of the constitution so that effective policies can be made to regulate it.

“The Committee takes note of the submission of the Ministry that a proposal for inclusion of tourism in the Concurrent List has been initiated. The Committee sincerely hopes that the proposed measure will provide a level playing field to all the hotels which have been badly hit by the ongoing covid-19 pandemic. The Committee desires to be kept apprised of the efficacy of the new measures proposed," the Parliamentary committee has said in its report tabled on Tuesday.

The committee had earlier said that inclusion of tourism in the Concurrent List will help simplify issues involved with multiple ministries and organisations at central level as well as with the states and UTs.

Talking specifically about hospitality industry, the committee also said it should be apprised of the current status of the proposal of grating the infrastructure status to hotels.

“The Ministry should inform the committee of the bottlenecks being faced in the same and reasons for the delay," the report stated.

Multiple hospitality associations have earlier requested the finance ministry to give infrastructure status to hotels with above ₹ 25 crore investment, excluding land. Currently, only those hotel projects with investment of over ₹ 200 crore get infrastructure status which limits the benefits to luxury hospitality firms.

The Committee also recommended that levy of taxes on hotels should be rationalized and industrial rates for power supply, water supply, property tax should be charged instead of the commercial rates.

Hotel Association of India (HAI) has welcome initiation of proposal by the ministry of tourism for including tourism in the Concurrent List of Constitution.

“Once implemented, this will also play a key role in post-covid recovery. Tourism activities and products differ from state to state. Placing tourism in the Concurrent list will facilitate seamless coordination. This will perhaps increase the quick implementation of schemes and pan-India face of Indian tourism," HAI said.

The association further added that being in concurrent list is not seen as taking away the powers of the state. “Like other subjects on the Concurrent list it will enable the Centre to bring in harmonious policies for betterment of tourism in consultation with the states," it noted.

Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), which represents more than 1,600 operators for inbound tourists, said that there are multiple reasons for which the association is supporting this recommendation.

'"Firstly, it will lead to rationalisation of multiple levies which are levied on the tourism sector.Besides, it will lead to better coordination between state government and centre government vis a vis tourism promotion policies. Security clearances which are required for visiting some states would be easier to get," said Rajiv Mehra, president, IATO.

Hotel Association of India (HAI) said once implemented, this decision will also play a key role in post-covid recovery.

Context : The Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) has urged the Union government to bring tourism under the concurrent list and to grant the ”industry” status to the hospitality sector in the wake of sector being the biggest causality in Covid-19 led slowdown in economy.

• Currently tourism is not specifically mentioned in any of the list provided for by the constitution.
• However, currently it is found in state list as “Pilgrimages, other than pilgrimages to places outside India” is mentioned in the state list. Pilgrimage outside India comes under union list.
• Thus, currently tourism falls in the sphere of states. Earlier also demand for it to be in concurrent list was made (Both centre and state able to make laws with overriding power with the Union), but opposition by many states did not let it happen.
• The demand currently is to ensure recovery of sector by aligning tourism to national agenda.
• States does not want it as tourism has emerged as source of high revenue and employment generation.

Why “Industry” status is demanded?

• Conferring industry status basically entails an inclusion in the State/Central industrial policy.
• Ensure loans at lower interest rates
• Enabling large investors to be financing partners
• Allowing developers refinance their existing debts

Designed by Fayetteville, Arkansas, architects E. Fay Jones and Maurice Jennings, the Mildred B. Cooper Memorial Chapel sits on a quiet hilltop overlooking Bella Vista's Lake Norwood. The chapel's 15 main arches stand 50 feet tall, and its walls are made of 4,460 square feet of glass. If you're already imagining your wedding or vow renewal taking place here, you're in luck: The chapel can be reserved for special ceremonies.

California: Sequoia National Park

You've heard of California's renowned redwoods, but did you know about its sequoias? While redwood trees stand as the tallest trees in the world, sequoias are the largest. What was once the site of the gunpowder works founded by E. I. du Pont is now a stunning educational center in Wilmington, Delaware. A Smithsonian affiliate, the Hagley Museum and Library works to further the study of business and technology. The institution also owns 235 acres of land along Delaware's Brandywine Creek.

Florida: Naples Pier

Located on the Gulf of Mexico in Naples, Florida, the Naples Pier serves as an excellent spot for fishing, dining, and simply taking in the ocean views. We're also willing to bet this pier is the perfect spot to watch a sunset.

Illinois: Bahá'í House of Worship

The Bahá'í House of Worship House of Worship in Wilmette, Illinois, is the oldest of the seven Bahá'í temples that exist around the world today. Indiana: Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore

Visitors using the surrounding trails might just be able to catch a glimpse of a beautiful blue heron.

Kentucky: Mammoth Cave National Park

Underneath the rolling hills of Central Kentucky lies Mammoth Cave — the world's longest known cave system — where more than 400 miles of it have been explored. Visitors can tour the cave, then choose from nearby activities including horseback riding, biking, and camping.

Louisiana: Garden District

If Southern charm is what you're after, look no further than the Garden District of New Orleans . Baltimore's George Peabody Library is so much more than a home for books: It also serves as an extravagant wedding and event venue for those willing to rent the space. With five tiers of balconies and more than 300,000 volumes of reading material, the library offers an elegant setting for wining, dining, and, of course, researching.

Massachusetts: Motif No. 1 Fish Shack

Of all the charming structures and beautiful landscapes in the tiny coastal village of Rockport, this little red fish shack is perhaps the most well-known. Known as Motif No. 1 since early 20th-century illustrator Lester Hornby deemed it so, the building has been recreated by several artists.

Michigan: Turnip Rock

This fascinating rock formation off the coast of Port Austin, Michigan, came to be after many years of waves wore down the stone. The land surrounding Turnip Rock is privately owned, however, so the only way to get up close and personal with the island is via water. Note that the area is especially shallow, so stepping out of a kayak to take a beautiful photo like this one is doable.

Minnesota: Minnehaha Falls

As the centerpiece of Minneapolis's Minnehaha Regional Park, this 53-foot waterfall is an extraordinary find in the Twin Cities area. Its name, Minnehaha, comes from words meaning "waterfall" in the Dakota language, according to the Minnesota Parks & Recreation Board .

Mississippi: Red Bluff

Behold: The prettiest, coolest hike ever!! Nicknamed the "Little Grand Canyon," The scenic trail around the red clay canyon is full of stunning views, a creek, and...a road that the still-eroding canyon sort of ate up. Basically: It's Instagram Gold.

Missouri: Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts

Directly across the state from St. Louis's gleaming Gateway Arch is the equally stunning Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts , located in the heart of downtown Kansas City. The 285,000-square-foot building, which was designed by architect Moshe Safdie and opened in 2011, regularly hosts operas and performances by the Kansas City Ballet and Kansas City Symphony.

Montana: Lake McDonald

As the largest lake in Montana's photogenic Glacier National Park, Lake McDonald spans 10 miles and sinks 472 feet deep. Formed by Ice Age-era glaciers, the lake has a still, reflective surface that provides the perfect mirror for the surrounding mountains. Visitors might even spot a bighorn sheep, elk, or black bear, as they are known to tour the area.

Nebraska: Holy Family Shrine

An isolated Catholic chapel, the marvelous Holy Family Shrine is located off Interstate 80 between Omaha and Lincoln in Nebraska. At its highest points, the chapel's roof reaches 49 feet tall, and the windowed walls give visitors a stretching view of the surrounding prairie. Although special ceremonies like weddings and baptisms are not permitted to be held at this location, guided tours are offered and a regular mass is held on Saturdays.

Nevada: Fly Geyser

Because the Fly Geyser was previously located on private land, travelers had to drive along Nevada State Route 34 to view it. Earlier this month, though, the Burning Man festival purchased the land, which means the formation will eventually be available for closer public viewing.

New Hampshire: Blair Covered Bridge

At 292 feet long, New Hampshire's rustic Blair Covered Bridge is the second longest in the state. The original bridge, which was built in 1829, burned down before the current bridge was constructed in 1869. Although it's been weathered and worn by travelers and hurricanes, the state of New Hampshire and the town of Campton continue to put in the effort to restore this historic site .

New Jersey: Island Beach State Park

New Jersey's Island Beach State Park , which spans nearly 10 miles of the Barnegat Peninsula, is a popular place for ocean swimming and surf fishing. And with its maritime forests, tidal marshes, and rolling sand dunes, the undeveloped barrier beach provides an incredible backdrop for these and other recreational activities.

New Mexico: White Sands

Although photos of New Mexico's rolling white sand dunes look almost too fantastic to be real, visitors can indeed find the White Sands National Monument in the heart of the Tularosa Basin. The sand is made of gypsum, which gives it its clean white color, and covers 275 square miles of desert. The photo opps — and opportunities for activities like sledding and hiking — are endless.

New York: Ausable Chasm Bridge

Discovered in 1765 by a man named William Gilliland, the Ausable Chasm is sometimes referred to as "the Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks." The remarkable vertical-walled canyon is made of 500-million-year-old rock and provides visitors with opportunities to hike, bike, raft, rock climb — or simply enjoy the magnificent view of the chasm and this stunning steel arch bridge.

North Carolina: Inn at Rodanthe

Does this oceanfront vacation home look familiar to you? If it does, you might have seen it in the 2008 Nicholas Sparks film starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane, Nights in Rodanthe . The Inn at Rodanthe was built in the 1980s, when it originally stood 400 feet from the Atlantic Ocean. But the water crept ever closer and the home was put in great danger, so it was moved to this location in 2010, where it's now available to rent.

North Dakota: Sunflower Fields

North Dakota grows more of these cheery blooms than any other state (51 percent of the nation's crop, to be exact), and you can find many fields of them growing in the center of the state. This sunflower field , located near Michigan City, North Dakota, is particularly beautiful, but wherever you choose to go to view the flowers is well worth the trip.

Ohio: Union Terminal

An Ohio State icon, Union Terminal stands in Cincinnati as a proud example of the Art Deco period. Visitors admire the 1933 building's large half-dome architecture and stunning fountain display, all of which cost $41 million to build. Visitors can tour the building and its many exhibits or, you know, take a train.

Oklahoma: Philbrook Museum

Today, the Philbrook Museum stands as a museum for modern and contemporary art and is a cultural institution in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In the 1930s, however, the artfully constructed building was home to oilman Waite Phillips and his wife, Genevieve. It was in 1938 that the couple gifted their 72-room mansion and its surrounding 23 acres to the city of Tulsa and asked that it be made into a center for the arts.

Oregon: Crater Lake

As the deepest and perhaps most pristine lake in the United States, Oregon's Crater Lake inspires awe in all who visit it. The body of water sits atop the volcanic Mount Mazama, which erupted 7,700 years ago and resulted in the formation of the lake. Now, fed by ice and snow, Crater Lake's water is some of the clearest in the world.

Pennsylvania: Boathouse Row

Boathouse Row along Philadelphia's Schuylkill River provides one of the city's most remarkable nighttime views. The 12 buildings making up the row house some of the city's local boating clubs, a recreation center, and a private social club.

Rhode Island: Cliff Walk

This 3.5-mile walk along the eastern shore of Newport, Rhode Island, merges natural with the architectural wonders of this coastal city. From the Cliff Walk path, walkers can take in the city's many historic and elaborate mansions, as well as local wildlife and shoreline views.

South Carolina: Angel Oak

Located on Johns Island, the massive live Angel Oak is a sight for any traveler to behold. Estimated to be somewhere between 400 and 500 years old, the oak is 66.5 feet tall, produces 17,200 square feet of shade and serves as the perfect stop on the way to a vacation on Kiawah and Seabrook Islands.

South Dakota: Spearfish Canyon

With its 1,000-foot limestone walls, Spearfish Canyon in South Dakota's Black Hills is home to a wide array of wildlife. Hoping to see a wild porcupine or bobcat in its natural habitat? This nature area, which also features the majestic Roughlock Falls, is your place.

Texas: Hamilton Pool Preserve

Just a short drive away from Austin, Texas, you'll find the magical (and historic) Hamilton Pool Preserve . Hamilton Creek spills out over a limestone overhang to create a 50-foot waterfall and underlying pool, which is a popular swimming spot. It's so popular, in fact, that Travis County Parks has started taking visitor reservations for it.

Tennessee: Cades Cove

This scenic valley is settled in the middle of Tennessee's section of the renowned Great Smoky Mountains. And all those hoping to tour Cades Cove need is a car: An 11-mile looped road circles through the valley and offers visitors picturesque views like the one you see here. Biking, hiking, and camping opportunities are also available.

Utah: Golden Cathedral Hiking Trail

Hikers, rejoice: This 9.2-mile trail in Utah's Neon Canyon will end with one of the most incredible destinations you've ever seen. Although the hike requires a decent amount of skill, it'll all be worth it upon seeing the domed pour-off known as the Golden Cathedral , where water from the canyon's Escalante River has formed extraordinary pothole arches. Hike on clear day to watch sun pour through the formation's three openings.

Virginia: Mabry Mill

Located off the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 176.1, Mabry Mill stands rustic and proud — and rightfully so, as the location is perhaps one of the most-photographed in America. The historic mill, built by Edwin Boston Mabry in the 1800s, has been restored so visitors can enjoy live exhibits and demonstrations of the milling process. During summer Sunday afternoons, the mill also comes alive with musicians and dancers.

Vermont: Stowe

Settled among forest, fields, streams as well as Mount Mansfield, the highest peak in the Vermont, Stowe, is the perfect resort destination for those wanting to escape to a tiny New England town. Visit Stowe for recreation (think mountain biking in the summer, and skiing and snowboarding in the winter), relaxation, and a number of festivals.

Washington: Naches Peak Loop Trail and Tipsoo Lake

What is the best state to live in? That is a complicated question to answer. Some criteria may be readily agreed on and measurable (such as low crime rate). In contrast, other criteria are personal preferences — for example, is it more fulfilling to live in Manhattan or in the solitude of the badlands?. Pink Storage offers an interesting methodology for ranking states and intriguingly concludes that North Dakota is the best state to live in the United States.

It turns out that there are plenty of things to see and do in North Dakota and the state has Theodore Roosevelt National Park protecting badlands and is the home of bison. Here's what to know about the underrated state that is considered the best place to live in 2024.

The Best State To Live In: Methodology

The methodology included economy, childcare and education, crime rate, and housing as the four categories.

Pink Storage rates the 50 states by four categories: economy, childcare and education, crime rate, and housing affordability. Their data was sourced from the US Census Bureau, FBI Crime Data Explorer, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and other federal agencies, as well as sources like Zillow.

They used 16 metrics all with equal weighting. The metrics include police per capita, property crime, life expectancy, cost of college, unemployment rates, total hours worked per week, average income, utility bills, and other metrics. They then worked out the state's weighted average across all the metrics to give them an overall score.

While North Dakota was labeled the best overall, it's worth noting that various states may have a single or multiple rankings better than ND. For example, North Dakota doesn't make our list of the safest places to live in the US based on crime rates .
