Liners: RKA vs Kathy Journey Designs

Searching the forum it seems there are four liner options: 1. BMW OEM liners, $$ stiff and smaller 2. RKA 3. Kathy 4. Chinese knock offs What is the difference between RKA and Kathy liners? Lots of praise for both of these options but can’t find comparisons. Thanks  

Bestem liners are manufactured offshore (no mention of ‘made in USA on their website), but they are a quality bag. I have used their liners on my ST1300 and now in my fourth season with my K1600GT. They use a fairly robust fabric and the zippers are quality as well.  

Second the Bestem, value and function just fine. Using them for the panniers, fit correctly ('16 GTL). Have a Kathy's bag for the top box, also like it but got it 2nd-hand for a great price. Would not hesitate to use Bestem all around.

RKA. Made in the USA. Top quality. I have RKA for side cases, tank bag & outside on top of top case. Have Kathy’s for inside top case. In my mind RKA is better.  

Don't dare buy that crap from China; the RKA bags I have used on my last three K bikes and I used the Kathy bags on my LT many years ago. Both are good products; no need to waste your money on the overpriced BMW bags IMHO!  

RKA bags are more expensive, but more robust. Thicker material, with beefier zippers and zipper pulls. Kathy's are still great bags, there is just less of them. Either one is a great option, it just depends on hiw heavy duty you would like.  

For soft-sided bags it's hard to beat RKA. A major + for RKA, his @Richardrka customer service is as good as it gets. Duane  

I have RKA liners. Quality is quite good, but I’ve never owned the others so I can’t compare, what I can say is they have excellent customer service. I paid for 2 day shipping not realizing they were actually local to me (they’re in the north bay, I’m in the south bay) they refunded me the extra shipping cost without even telling me and I still got them the next day. A lot of places probably would’ve just kept the money.  

Another vote for RKA liners. Even got rid of my original BMW bag liners, to upgrade to RKA. Wish I'd known the difference in the first place, could've saved some money.

I have Kathy liners for the panniers on my GSA and they work fine, the canvas is a little thin but adequate and they weren't anywhere near as expensive as the BMW liners which were a little over $150 each. I have the pannier and top case liners from my 2016 K16 if anyone is interested.  

I have the Kathy’s Design liners for the B, in red (‘I like red’) and they work well. Flimsy when empty, but that’s OK. One bag for each side which I like. I have no doubt RKA bags are great. The reasons I did not choose them? More $$$. Too many pieces (I believe there are seven total pieces to the set). No color options. I can still stuff more things in all the nooks and crannies with Kathy’s bags, something I believe RKA is trying to achieve by having seven little bags to fit all the spots inside the panniers; which is overkill IMO (but again I have not tried them, maybe I’m wrong). BMW’$ bag$ are ju$t ob$cene 😉.
