Next Step: Tell us who is travelling so we can give you an accurate quote.

Who do you want to get a quote for?

Why we ask: Since your credit card’s travel insurance covers you, your spouse and/or your dependent children, your quote will calculate the coverage you already have on your card—saving you money!

Why we ask: Since your credit card’s travel insurance does not cover travellers other than you (the cardholder), your spouse and/or your dependent children, your quote for these travellers will not factor in your credit card coverage.

Tip: You will need to get a quote and buy travel insurance for other eligible travellers separately so that we can give you an accurate quote for everyone.

Best credit cards, back to guides, head-to-head: rbc® avion visa infinite† vs. rbc® ion+ visa.

In this edition of Head-to-Head, we compare the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† and the RBC® ION+ Visa, which both earn points in the Avion Rewards program.

avion visa travel insurance phone number

In this edition of Head-to-Head, we’ll be exploring two RBC credit cards: the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† and the RBC® ION+ Visa .

What makes this comparison particularly interesting is that while both of these cards earn RBC’s Avion Rewards currency, each one earns a different version of it.

Throughout this guide, we’ll explore how these two different (but similar) currencies work together, which card is best in each comparative category, and how you can use Avion’s unique currency structure to your advantage.

Card Basics

1. points currency.

In this Head-to-Head, one of the most important things we’ll look at is each card’s points currency and how it relates to the other.

Both the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† and the RBC® ION+ Visa earn RBC’s in-house currency of Avion Rewards points; however, each card earns a different version of this currency.

The RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† earns Avion Elite points, while the RBC® ION+ Visa earns Avion Premium points, and each currency type comes with different redemption options.

Avion Elite points have more redemption opportunities than Avion Premium points, including the ability to transfer your points to multiple partnered loyalty programs, using your points for travel redemptions through RBC’s Air Travel Redemption Schedule and through the Avion Rewards booking portal, and for statement credits, gift cards, and merchandise.

avion visa travel insurance phone number

Comparatively, Avion Premium points can only be transferred to a single partnered loyalty program, WestJet Rewards , or used for statement credits, gift cards, merchandise, and travel booked through the Avion Rewards website, but at a lower rate than Avion Elite points.

However, it’s important to note that the Avion Premium points earned with the RBC® ION+ Visa can be transferred into Avion Elite points at par if you have at least one credit card from the RBC Avion family. We’ll go over this in more detail in the redemption section below.

Verdict: Since Avion Elite points have considerably more redemption options than Avion Premium points, we’re giving this win to the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite†.

2. Ease of Redeeming

The Avion Elite points earned with the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† can be redeemed a number of ways.

The most valuable way to redeem your Avion Elite points is by transferring them to airline loyalty programs, where you can then use them to book award flights.

Avion Elite points can be transferred at a 1:1 ratio to British Airways Executive Club (Avios) and Cathay Pacific Asia Miles , and to WestJet Rewards at a rate of 1 Avion point = $0.01 in WestJet dollars (WSD).

They can also be transferred to American Airlines AAdvantage at a rate of 10 Avion points = 7 AAdvantage miles.

avion visa travel insurance phone number

Additionally, Avion Elite points can be redeemed for travel through RBC’s Air Travel Redemption Schedule , which can yield a value of up to 2.3 cents (all figures in CAD) per point.

avion visa travel insurance phone number

Avion Elite points can also be used for gift cards, merchandise, and statement credits as well as for travel booked through the Avion Rewards website. If you redeem Avion Elite points to book travel through the Avion Rewards platform, they’re worth 1 cent per point.

As mentioned above, the RBC® ION+ Visa earns Avion Premium points instead of Avion Elite points, and these can only be transferred to a single loyalty program, WestJet Rewards.

avion visa travel insurance phone number

Avion Premium points can also be redeemed for statement credits, gift cards, and merchandise, plus they can be used for travel bookings made on the Avion Rewards website.

If you redeem Avion Premium points to book travel through the Avion Rewards platform, they’re worth 0.58 cents per point.

Avion Premium points can unfortunately not be used to book travel through RBC’s Air Travel Redemption Schedule.

However, Avion Premium points can be transferred from your Avion Premium account to your Avion Elite account if you have one of each credit card type.

This means that you can collect Avion Premium points with your RBC® ION+ Visa, enjoying its higher earning rates (see Earning Rates section below) and then, as long as you also have an Avion-branded card like the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite†, you can transfer these points to your Avion Elite account at par to take advantage of the more abundant redemption options.

Verdict: The winner of this category is the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite†, since it’s the card with the most/best redemption options; however, it should not be overlooked that the RBC® ION+ Visa has fairly easy access to these same redemption options as long as you also hold an eligible Avion credit card.

3. Earning Rates

Despite the fact that it’s a premium credit card, the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† does not come with particularly notable earning rates.

The RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† earns Avion Elite points at the following rates:

  • 1.25 RBC Avion Elite points† per dollar spent on qualifying travel purchases
  • 1 RBC Avion Elite point† per dollar spent on all other qualifying purchases

Meanwhile, the lower-tiered RBC® ION+ Visa has a fairly strong earning structure, accruing Avion Premium points at the following rates:

  • 3 RBC Avion Premium points per dollar spent on grocery, dining, food delivery, taxis/ride-sharing services, gas, EV charging, and streaming, digital gaming, and subscriptions
  • 1 RBC Avion Premium point per dollar spent on all other qualifying purchases

Verdict: The RBC® ION+ Visa’s 3x earning rate is considerably better than the 1.25x rate offered by the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite†, and given that it’s possible to transfer Avion Premium points to Avion Elite points to take advantage of the better redemption offers within the Avion Elite structure (if you have both cards), the RBC® ION+ Visa is the clear winner in this category.

4. Welcome Bonus

Another important feature when applying for any credit card is its welcome bonus offer.

The welcome bonus offered on the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† typically falls between 35,000 and 55,000 Avion Elite points, depending on the offer.

avion visa travel insurance phone number

  • Earn 35,000 RBC Avion points † upon approval†
  • Plus, earn 1x 1.25x RBC Avion points †  on qualifying travel purchases
  • Transfer RBC Avion points to British Airways Executive Club and other frequent flyer programs for premium flights †
  • Redeem Avion points for flights with the RBC Air Travel Redemption Schedule †
  • Minimum income: $60,000 personal or $100,000 household
  • Annual fee: $120 †
  • Supplementary card fee: $50

Meanwhile, the RBC® ION+ Visa’s welcome bonus tends to fluctuate between 6,000 and 12,000 Avion Premium points, depending on the offer.

avion visa travel insurance phone number

  • Earn 12,000 Avion Premium points upon approval †
  • Earn 3x points † on qualifying grocery, dining, food delivery, gas, rideshare, daily public transit, electric vehicle charging, streaming, digital gaming and digital subscriptions†
  • Mobile device insurance †
  • Annual fee: $48 †

Despite the fact that the two cards use different versions of Avion points, and Avion Elite points and Avion Premium points have different redemption options (as we mentioned above), the fact that Avion Premium points can easily be transferred to Avion Elite points if you have an eligible Avion Elite credit card means that we can compare these welcome bonuses on equal terms.

Verdict: The RBC® Avion Visa Infinite’s† welcome bonus takes the prize in this category, since its baseline bonus is nearly three times more than the best-ever welcome bonus that’s offered with the RBC® ION+ Visa.

5. Annual Fee

The next factor we’ll compare is each card’s annual fee.

The RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† comes with an annual fee of $120, but if you have an RBC® VIP Banking Account, you can receive a $120 fee waiver for this card as part of the account’s benefits package.

avion visa travel insurance phone number

Comparatively, the RBC® ION+ Visa has a cumulative annual fee of $48, which is charged in monthly instalments of $4. You can get this monthly fee rebated if you have either the RBC Signature No Limit Banking or the RBC Advantage Banking for Students account.

Verdict: Although both cards come with the opportunity to receive a fee waiver on their annual fees, we choose the RBC® ION+ Visa in this category since it has a considerably lower annual fee overall and the fee waiver is easier to access.

6. Foreign Transaction Fees

Both the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† and RBC® ION+ Visa charge the standard 2.5% foreign exchange fee on all purchases made in a foreign currency (including US dollar purchases).

Verdict: This category is a tie. The cards are identical in this regard, and neither provides any advantage for foreign purchases.

If you’re looking to save the 2.5% foreign exchange fee when you’re travelling or making any foreign currency purchases, check out our guide to Which Credit Cards Have No Foreign Transaction Fees to learn more about your options.

Perks and Benefits

1. credit card perks.

In addition to a strong insurance package (mentioned below), the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† comes with a few other interesting perks.

First, as a part of the Visa Infinite family, cardholders will have access to the Visa Infinite benefits which include discounts on hotels, unique dining experiences, and complimentary concierge service.

avion visa travel insurance phone number

Additionally, cardholders will also enjoy Avion-specific perks, such as special prices and bonus points on purchases and the ability to use your points for investments and charitable donations.

Most interestingly, the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† also offers cardholders the opportunity to get a free ski pass at participating ski resorts across Canada during the winter season with the Friday Friend Pass perk.

To qualify for this perk, you just have to buy one Friday lift pass with your RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† card through the designated website for the resort of your choice, and you’ll get a second lift pass for free.

avion visa travel insurance phone number

On the other side of this head-to-head, the RBC® ION+ Visa doesn’t offer any perks that fall within this category.

Verdict: This one is no contest. The RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† is the winner.

2. Partnership Perks

Both the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† and the RBC® ION+ Visa come with a handful of partnership perks and discounts.

With the RBC® ION+ Visa, cardholders can save 3¢/L on fuel at Petro-Canada, and will earn 20% more Petro-Points and Avion points upon linking their card to their Petro-Points account†.

Cardholders can also enjoy a three-month complimentary DoorDash DashPass subscription†, and can earn 50 Be Well points for every $1 spent on eligible purchases at Rexall. To earn the Be Well points, you need to use your linked RBC® ION+ Visa for the purchase and you need to scan your Be Well card at checkout.

avion visa travel insurance phone number

The RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† includes some very similar benefits to the above but with some additions and expansions.

With the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite†, you get the same perks and benefits at Petro-Canada and with the Rexall Be Well program as you get with the RBC® ION+ Visa.

Additionally, the DoorDash DashPass program offers a free 12-month subscription (nine months more than with the RBC® ION+ Visa), and you can enjoy $0 delivery fees on order of $15 or more when you pay with your linked RBC credit card.

The RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† also gives cardholders the opportunity to save 20% at Hertz† and earn 2x the points when you use your card for the rental†.

Verdict: Since the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† offers the extra Hertz discount and a longer complimentary DashPass subscription, it’s the winner of this category.

Other Factors

1. supplementary cardholders.

Supplementary cards cost $50 each with the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† and $0 each with the RBC® ION+ Visa.

Verdict: The RBC® ION+ Visa is the winner in this category, offering free supplementary cards.

2. Insurance

As a premium credit card, it’s no surprise that the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† comes with fairly strong insurance coverage.

The card includes solid insurance coverage for emergency medical, travel accident, car rental collision/loss damage, trip cancellation, trip interruption, and flight delay.

It also provides purchase protection† that will reimburse you if you accidentally lose or damage personal property within 90 days of purchase, up to a maximum of $50,000 per year, plus an extended warranty† feature that automatically doubles the original manufacturer’s warranty.

avion visa travel insurance phone number

Comparatively, the lower-tiered RBC® ION+ Visa comes with fairly basic insurance coverage.

With this card, you get two years of mobile device coverage for up to $1,000 if your mobile device, such as your cell phone, is lost, stolen, accidentally damaged or experiences mechanical failure as long as the device was purchased with your RBC® ION+ Visa.

With the RBC® ION+ Visa, you also get the same purchase protection coverage and extended warranty feature as the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite†.

Verdict: The winner of this category is the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† with its valuable array of insurance coverage.

3. Ease of Getting Approved

In order to qualify for the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite†, you’ll need a minimum personal income of $60,000 or a minimum household income of $100,000.

The RBC® ION+ Visa, comparatively, has no minimum income requirement, making it considerably more accessible.

Verdict: With no minimum income requirement, the RBC® ION+ Visa takes this category, thanks to its lower financial barrier to entry.

The RBC® ION+ Visa and the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† both offer cardholders the opportunity to earn Avion Rewards points towards a variety of redemption options, including travel, credit card statements, gift cards, and more.

The RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† is a stronger overall card, offering a consistently strong welcome bonus, better redemption options, solid travel insurance, and some intriguing perks.

However, the RBC® ION+ Visa comes with a lower annual fee and notably better earning rates, plus the ability to easily transfer its less valuable Avion Premium points to the more valuable and versatile Avion Elite points.

If you’re inclined towards getting a single card that can help you easily earn travel points, provide you with some travel insurance, and that offers you cool perks like free ski passes in the winter, then the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite† is your best choice.

That said, if you’re willing to have two RBC cards, then adding the RBC® ION+ Visa as well offers the amazing ability to earn Avion points at a much better rate than the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite†, while still accessing the same redemption opportunities by transferring your points to your Avion Elite account.

Visiting another country or province without travel insurance can be a costly mistake. Indeed, did you know that an overnight stay in a hospital in the United States can exceed $14,000 CAD? Some countries might even refuse to help you if you are unable to prepay for treatment.

Travel insurance is a necessity when you are away from home . It guarantees your ability to access and pay for health care, if and when you need it. Beyond medical emergencies, travel insurance can also help with flight issues, lost luggage, and more.

While you're looking at options, have you considered RBC travel insurance? What does RBC cover? For what price? What are its pros and cons? Read our review on RBC travel insurance, get a quote, and see how the competitors fare.

Approximate credit score needed for approval

Canadian credit card issuers rarely disclose required credit scores, which makes it hard to know your chances of approval when comparing credit cards. What we do know is that higher scores have better chances of approval — that’s true no matter what type of credit you’re applying for. Want to learn more? Table of Contents

What is aeroplan, what is air miles, similarities between aeroplan and air miles, key differences between aeroplan and air miles, choosing between aeroplan and air miles, alternatives to air miles and aeroplan, frequently asked questions (faqs).

Air Miles was once the leading travel loyalty program in Canada but relaunched in June 2024 after many of its major retail partners left. It declared bankruptcy and was acquired by its partner , the Bank of Montreal, in 2023. Now, with the program touting increased flexibility and non-brand-specific Miles collection options, how does it stack up against its currently stronger competitor, Air Canada’s Aeroplan program?

Dive in and discover what separates Air Miles and Aeroplan apart from one another and if you find both programs too complicated and not straightforward enough, find out how they stack up to the alternatives out there to satisfy Canadians’ undying hunger for loyalty programs.

After all, most Canadians subscribe to between seven to 10 loyalty programs and even still, there are yet more people who can’t get enough-–belonging to 30 to 40 loyalty programs and linking their rewards credit cards to maximize every benefit.

Aeroplan is Air Canada’s travel rewards program. This frequent flyer program allows members to earn points when travelling with Air Canada and shopping with affiliated partner brands. Those points can then be redeemed toward travel purchases from Air Canada, Air Canada partners and Air Canada Vacations,  including flights, vacation packages, hotels and car rentals. Joining Aeroplan is free, and there are also Aeroplan-branded credit cards for those who want to earn Aeroplan points at an accelerated rate.

Air Miles is another Canadian travel rewards program. However, unlike Aeroplan, it is not tied to a specific airline. The Air Miles program is free to join and allows members to earn rewards when making purchases at grocery stores, liquor stores and wholesale stores. Those who collect Air Miles can choose between Dream Miles and Cash Miles. Dream Miles can be redeemed towards experiences such as travel, event tickets or merchandise through the Air Miles rewards website . Cash Miles can be redeemed for everyday spending at partner stores (like grocery shopping, etc.) or for eVouchers from popular brands like Starbucks, Cineplex, and Amazon . For those who want to earn Air Miles faster, you can also get an Air Miles credit card .

  • Canadian travel rewards programs
  • Free membership
  • Branded credit card options are available
  • Can use points towards travel and merchandise
  • Allow you to earn in-store or online through branded partners

Air Miles and Aeroplan programs can both be lucrative rewards programs for Canadians, so if you find yourself deciding between the two, here are a few things to consider to make the best decision.

  • What are your redemption goals? Aeroplan doesn’t have a cash-back option, while Air Miles does. Aeroplan and Air Miles offer travel redemption options, but if you fly often with Air Canada, Aeroplan will be more lucrative for you.
  • What are your spending or shopping habits? Look at the partners for each option to see where you are more likely to spend your money. Air Miles makes sense if you are a frequent shopper at Sobeys. You also want to consider your location. Different provinces have different partners, so look at the websites and compare.

Keep in mind that both of these are free programs, so you can double-dip and take advantage of both to maximize your potential. If you are looking for a branded credit card, it’s better to pick one. However, regarding their base free programs, why not sign up for both?

Aeroplan and Air Miles are loyalty programs worth looking into, but they are not the only options. Especially if you are looking into credit card rewards programs, some alternatives to Air Miles and Aeroplan that might interest you include the following.

  • American Express Membership Rewards: The American Express rewards program allows cardholders to use their points for travel and more. Higher-tier cards come with big perks like airport lounge access and travel credits. Plus, American Express Points can be converted to multiple airline and hotel loyalty program partners, including Aeroplan, at a one-to-one ratio.

  • RBC Avion: RBC’s rewards program is linked to certain credit cards. The best value is for travel, but you can also cash in your points for merchandise, gift cards and more.

Related: Best RBC Credit Cards

  • Marriott Bonvoy: Marriott Bonvoy is a free rewards program that allows you to earn rewards for hotel stays. There are also Marriott Bonvoy-branded credit cards that allow you to earn points faster.
  • TD Rewards: TD Bank credit cards offer TD Rewards, which can be redeemed for travel (through Expedia  For TD ), merchandise, gift cards and more.
  • Scene+ Rewards: Scene+ Rewards is another free program that allows you to earn points when shopping at partner brands. You can also accelerate earning those points by getting a branded Scotiabank credit card . Scene+ Rewards can be used for travel, merchandise, movies, dining out and groceries .
  • CIBC Aventura: CIBC’s Aventura credit cards are the backbone of the bank’s main travel rewards program. Of course, you can also use your rewards towards other redemptions, but travel is the best value.
  • BMO Rewards: BMO Rewards are tied to specific BMO credit cards . With BMO Rewards points, you can travel, shop or invest.
  • WestJet Rewards: For Canadians who travel frequently with the WestJet Airline, there is the WestJet rewards program. Like Aeroplan, there are also WestJet-branded credit cards.

Are Aeroplan points the same as Air Miles?

Aeroplan and Air Miles are loyalty programs allowing you to earn points for travel, merchandise, and more. However, they are separate programs and are not associated with one another.

What are the disadvantages of Aeroplan?

Aeroplan is branded with Air Canada, which means you get the best value for your points when redeeming them specifically for Air Canada products (flights, vacations, etc.) rather than travel in general.

Can I use Air Miles for Air Canada?

Yes, you can use Air Miles for Air Canada. That being said, since Aeroplan is Air Canada’s reward program, if you fly frequently with Air Canada, it is likely more lucrative to collect Aeroplan points.

Are Air Miles worth it in Canada?

Air Miles used to be one of Canada’s top programs but has had a rough few years. The program’s parent company even filed for bankruptcy in 2023 before the program was acquired by the Bank of Montreal (BMO) . However, the new program has had a significant facelift and has been revamped to be more flexible and allow Canadians to earn faster. While it is still in the early days, we are excited about these changes.

AAA Travel Insurance Review 2024: Coverage, Benefits, and Expert Insights

Affiliate links for the products on this page are from partners that compensate us (see our advertiser disclosure with our list of partners for more details). However, our opinions are our own. See how we rate insurance products to write unbiased product reviews.

It's impossible to predict the future, especially when you're traveling. That's why travel insurance is often a wise investment. You want to protect yourself and your money in case something goes wrong. Business Insider compared AAA travel insurance to the best travel insurance companies and found it to be above an average, especially if you're traveling with kids.

The American Automobile Association is a national organization with over 61 million members and offers comprehensive travel insurance plans. AAA policies are supplied by Allianz Global Assistance , one of the world's top travel insurance providers.

AAA Travel Insurance  makes it easy to get coverage for an upcoming trip. You can get a quote, compare plans, and purchase a policy online.

The plans from AAA travel insurance are extensive, covering the following:

  • Trip cancellations
  • Trip delays
  • Trip interruptions
  • Trip changes
  • Emergency medical transport
  • Lost baggage
  • Lost or stolen travel documents

AAA travel insurance plans are competitively priced and give you the flexibility to pay for only the amount of coverage you need. For instance, if you're traveling with one small piece of luggage, you could opt for a more basic plan with less baggage coverage, saving you money in the process. Kids 17 and under are also covered for free when they travel with parents or grandparents, making it a good choice for travel insurance for families .

One downside to AAA travel insurance is that the website is not as user-friendly as its competitors. Requesting a AAA travel insurance quote and comparing plan options can be more challenging than on some other travel insurance platforms. Additionally, it's coverage limits on emergency medical insurance is on the lower side, topping out at $75,000.

AAA Travel Insurance Plans Available

AAA travel insurance offers several plans, each with its own price and level of coverage. Plan availability depends on where you live.

Travelers from most U.S. states will have the following plan options:

  • TripProtect Select II. This is the simplest, most affordable plan. Among its many benefits, AAA offers trip cancellation insurance up to $50,000, emergency medical up to $25,000, and lost baggage coverage up to $1,000.
  • TripProtect Cancel Anytime . This provides the same coverage as TripProtect Select II, but allows travelers to cancel their trip for "almost any unforeseen reason" not already covered in the Select plan. Cancellations that fall under this category are eligible for 80% reimbursement of nonrefundable fees.
  • TripProtect Deluxe II. This plan covers the same categories as the Select II plan, but increases the coverage amount in most categories. For example, the baggage coverage extends up to $2,000 and travel medical insurance extends to $75,000.
  • Rental Car Damage Protector. This is a plan specifically for protecting you if your rental car is damaged. It doesn't cover standard travel-related categories, but it does cover trip interruptions related to a rental car, rental car damage (up to $50,000), and baggage loss related to a rental car.

Travelers from New York and Washington have access to the TripAssist plans (instead of the TripProtect plans outlined above). The scope of coverage with TripAssist plans is quite similar.

Keep in mind that AAA travel insurance could deny coverage to people with pre-existing medical conditions. That said, it's possible to secure insurance, even with a pre-existing condition. You will have to buy a plan that can provide a pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver and buy your policy within a specified purchasing window.

In AAA's case, all its policies, excluding its rental car damage protector, offers pre-existing condition waivers. To qualify for the waiver, you'll need to purchase your policy within 14 days of your initial trip deposit.

Additional Coverage Options Offered by AAA Travel Insurance (Riders)

AAA travel insurance doesn't allow for add-ons or riders. With each AAA travel insurance plan, what you see is what you get. Only the people named on the policy are covered. So, if you're traveling with family members or friends who want coverage, be sure to include them when requesting a quote. However, note that kids 17 and under can be covered for free.

You also need to be aware of exclusions. Exclusions are certain expenses that aren't covered by the travel insurance policy.

Common exclusions with AAA travel insurance include:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • "Normal" pregnancy and childbirth
  • Fertility treatment or elective abortion
  • Alcohol or drug use
  • High-risk or extreme sports (bungee jumping, skydiving, etc.)
  • Criminal acts
  • War or war-related activity (including terrorism)

Before purchasing a policy, make sure you're aware of the specific exclusions for your chosen plan.

How Much Does AAA Travel Insurance Cost?

The cost of a AAA travel insurance plan depends on several factors, including:

  • Your home state
  • The number of travelers
  • The age of the travelers
  • Your destination
  • The length of your trip
  • The total cost of your trip

When you request a quote on the official AAA travel insurance website, you'll provide all of this information. That way, AAA can quote you an accurate price.

For a general idea of typical costs, here's how much the TripProtect Select II plan would cost in certain situations:

  • $152 – A 23-year-old from Illinois taking a week-long, $3,000 trip to Italy
  • $186 – A 30-year-old from California taking a two-week trip to Japan for $4,000
  • $434 – A Texas family (two 40-year-old parents with a 10-year-old and 4-year-old) taking a two-week trip to Australia for $20,000
  • $418* – A 65-year-old couple from New York taking a $6,000 trip to Mexico for two weeks

*This quote is for the TripAssist Family Care plan, which is currently only available in New York and Washington.

How to Purchase and Manage a AAA Travel Insurance Policy

AAA Travel Insurance provides affordable, user-friendly policy options. You can purchase a AAA travel insurance policy online by going to the official AAA travel insurance website and follow the following steps:

  • Enter information about your upcoming trip, including your state of residence, the total trip cost, destination, travel dates, and the ages of all travelers.
  • Choose from the available plans (and then click "Buy Now").
  • Provide additional information (name, address, and flight information).
  • Enter your credit card information.
  • Click "Complete Purchase."

The entire process should only take a few minutes. Just make sure you carefully look at each available plan before making your decision. Additionally, consider whether you need the pre-existing condition waiver. To qualify, you'll need to purchase your policy within 14 days of your initial trip deposit.

How to file a claim with AAA Travel Insurance

The easiest way to file a claim is to do it online.

Go to the travel insurance page of the AAA website and click "File or check a claim." In the next window, click "File a claim." This will take you to the Allianz Insurance Claims Center (remember, Allianz is the supplier of AAA travel insurance).

You can also go directly to the Allianz Insurance Claims Center.

Within Allianz's online claims system, you'll follow a basic three-step process:

  • Provide some details about what happened in an online form.
  • Upload supporting documentation (incident reports, proof of payment, trip itineraries, receipts, etc.)
  • Continue to check your claim status online through the Allianz Insurance Claims Center.

If you prefer not to file a claim through the Allianz website, you can use one of these alternative methods:

  • The Allyz TravelSmart mobile app (available for iOS and Android)
  • Email via [email protected]
  • Fax to 804-673-1469
  • Mail to the following address:

Allianz Global Assistance

P.O. Box 71533

Richmond, VA 23255-1533

Whichever filing method you choose, remember that Allianz can't accept a claim without proof. So, make sure you include all the documents necessary to show that the incident occurred. If Allianz needs more documentation, they'll ask for it – but the request is likely to slow down the claim process.

AAA Travel Insurance Customer Service and Support Experience

AAA travel insurance is provided by Allianz, a reputable insurance provider based in Germany. In online reviews, Allianz customers report an overall positive support experience.

Allianz gets an average of 4.2 stars from users on the popular review site Trustpilot. People frequently comment that the claims process goes smoothly and takes less time than expected. Customers also praise the staff for being truthful and responsive.

AAA Travel Insurance isn't the only option for travelers who want coverage. Here's how AAA stacks up against the competition.

AAA Travel Insurance vs. Nationwide

Unlike AAA, which is a nonprofit motor club organization that offers travel insurance on the side, Nationwide is an actual insurance company. That means they have a wider variety of travel insurance plans to choose from.

Along with single-trip insurance, Nationwide Travel Insurance offers annual multi-trip plans and special cruise plans.

Annual travel insurance can be cost-effective if you take multiple trips in a year. So, if you're a frequent traveler, getting an annual plan from Nationwide could be better than using AAA to buy multiple single-trip plans.

AAA Travel Insurance vs. Faye

Faye Travel Insurance is an app-based travel insurance provider that offers highly customizable plans. With Faye, you can choose to add coverage for vacation rental damage, extreme sports, and even pet care. This flexibility, along with the app-based interface, makes it a great option for young, adventurous travelers.

Faye doesn't let you choose between different coverage amounts for included categories. This is different from AAA travel insurance, where you can select between a basic plan with lower coverage amounts and a more comprehensive plan with higher coverage amounts. So, if you're hoping to match your coverage to your level of risk tolerance, AAA could be better.

AAA Travel Insurance vs. Cat 70

Operated by travel insurance aggregator SquareMouth, Cat 70 Travel Insurance provides $500,000 in emergency medical coverage. That's significantly more than AAA travel insurance, which only covers up to $75,000 in emergency medical expenses. That makes Cat 70 a better option for older travelers or anyone who worries they could suffer a medical emergency.

However, the signup process for Cat 70 is relatively confusing compared to AAA's system. You have to go through SquareMouth, instead of requesting a quote from Cat 70 directly. So, if your goal is to simplify the process, AAA is better.

AAA Travel Insurance FAQs

All AAA travel insurance plans cover trip cancellation, with the exception of the specific rental car damage plans.

AAA travel insurance covers trip cancellations, trip interruptions, medical emergencies, lost baggage, and lost or stolen travel documents. It can also cover pre-existing medical conditions, but only if you secure a waiver ahead of time. The exact coverage will depend on the specific AAA travel insurance plan.

Yes, Allianz provides the travel insurance that AAA offers. This means that if you purchase an AAA travel insurance plan and have to file a claim, you'll file it with Allianz.

AAA membership does not include travel insurance for seniors or anyone else. For an AAA member to get travel insurance through the organization, they have to pay for it separately.

Why You Should Trust Us: What Went into Our AAA Travel Insurance Review

To evaluate AAA travel insurance, we reviewed the variety of options it offers, coverage limits, benefits, add-ons, flexibility, protocols, claims process, and affordability. We pay attention to any savings opportunities travelers can take advantage of, like discounts for children. We also look at how travel insurance companies handle pre-existing medical conditions.

We'll also consider how customers rate a travel insurance company. After all, it doesn't matter if a travel insurance company offers great coverage if it's not going to follow through on payouts if a covered event occurs.
