Learn more about Finland

Best time to visit finland.

Finland has pleasant summers, with July being the warmest month (temperatures usually average around 59°F).

Outdoor activities like hiking, mountain biking and fishing are popular during summer and spring.

In Lapland midsummer is also the time of the midnight sun, a phenomenon where the sun barely sets.

Winter runs from November to March and during this time expect plenty of snowfall - perfect for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and sledding. With temperatures regularly hitting -4°F, Finland's winters are particularly cold, so pack accordingly if traveling at this time.

Geography and environment

Finland is home to large tracts of forest, a multitude of pure lakes and hundreds of islands, making it one of nature's most blessed landscapes.

The north of Finland (known as Lapland) is characterized by relatively flat terrain, demarcated by long rivers and due to its Arctic location, extreme snowfall and ice can be found, particularly in winter.

Bordering   Sweden ,   Norway   and   Russia , Finland also has long stretches of coastline along the Baltic Sea, the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia.

The coastal areas are home to thousands of rocky islands (which are mostly uninhabited) while the interior of the country is dominated by forests and lakes.

Top 5 culinary delights of Finland

1. karelian pasty.

This traditional, savory pie can be found widely throughout Finland. Featuring a rye crust filled with rice and served with egg and butter, this is a simple yet tasty snack ideal for vegetarians.

Finland is home to some of the world's best fresh produce, and the variety of berries on offer is astounding. Blessed with ideal climatic conditions for berry-growing, visitors can expect to snap up superior tasting, fresh cloudberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and lingonberries, See them offered fresh at markets and shops, served alongside meals in sauces, jams and spreads or baked in delicious pies.

3. Kaalikaaryleet

These baked cabbage rolls are a standard entry on most Finnish restaurant menus. Featuring ground beef, rice, onion and cream wrapped in cabbage rolls and served with cranberry or lingonberry sauce, they may be hard to pronounce but they sure are easy to eat.

4. Graavilohi

Finland has a proud heritage steeped in fishing, so it's no surprise that the quality of seafood is very high. This simple meal of salted salmon doesn't need any dressings or condiments as the pure, natural flavors of the salmon are the main attraction.

These sweet bread treats have numerous varieties, from cinnamon, to almonds and raisins. Typically eaten with a coffee, pulla are an inexpensive cafe snack - a great, budget choice in a notoriously expensive country.

Festivals and events

HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR FINLAND TOURS INCLUDE:

Finland has some of the most beautiful natural scenery and untouched wilderness in Europe. It is no secret that Finland is a magical winter destination with our Lapland Arctic highlights tour and Lapland Christmas Magic escorted tour amongst many options for Finland tours in wintertime.

But with thousands of lakes and beautiful forests summer in Finland should not be dismissed. Have you ever found yourself saying "if only there were more hours in the day?" In Finland your wish will come true. Just as Finland experiences no sun in winter months, the opposite is true in summer.

With 24 hours of daylight in the north and only 'twilight' in the south you literally have more hours to explore Finland and its beautiful forests and thousands of lakes where you can enjoy canoeing, fishing, camping and sauna. For an authentic short escape, our Endless summer days by Lake Saimaa tour will have you experience the tranquillity of Finnish lakes.

Northern Lights/Aurora Borealis in Scandinavia are at their most frequent between end of September and end of March. A range of our Finland and Scandinavian tours have been made to maximise your chances of viewing this remarkable phenomenon. Autumn colours & Aurora Borealis is an example of a wonderful Finnish Autumn tour, but to maximise your experience, all our Northern Lights tours are away from the cities to avoid artificial light pollution.

In winter Finland transforms into a fairytale landscape of whites and ice and is the best time of the year to travel to northern Finland and Lapland. Most of the traditional Lappish activities involve snow, so we would recommend you travel between December and April.

Be sure not to miss Northern Lights/Aurora Borealis tours, snowmobile driving, husky ride, reindeer sleigh rides, snowshoeing and visiting the real Santa Claus which are all activities offered in most of our Finland tours.

OUR FINLAND TOURS CAN INCLUDE:

Our Finland travel options are endless and depending on what you want to experience we have a Finland tour suitable for any age and interest.

For a true taste of what Finland has to offer in summer, why not take our independent self-drive Green Forests & Blue Lakes in Finland tour package. This tour to the eastern parts of Finland is like taking a trip into the heart of Finnish identity. You will enjoy relaxing green forests, rolling hills and glittering lakes.

If you don't fancy sub-zero temperatures associated with Finland in winter, consider an Autumn tour. During this Lapland Autumn Tour you can stay in an Aurora Dome whilst experiencing peaceful afternoons at the lake and Northern Light activities.

If you want to try winter activities such as snowshoeing, snowmobile rides, husky safari or reindeer rides - Finland is the place to be. There is almost always snow in Northern and Eastern Finland between December and March and you would not want to miss these experiences on a tour often in combination with seeing Northern Lights/ Aurora Borealis.

To meet and hug the real Santa Claus in Finland is often a once in a lifetime experience. During our Polar Bears & Santa in Lapland tour families get to meet Santa in his very secret hideout and learn about everything Christmas. All our Christmas tours include a range of winter activities, and if you can't find a Christmas in Finland tour to suit, we can tailor make an itinerary for you.

Many of our Finland Christmas holidays run on specific dates, however we also offer pre-Christmas packages such as Pre-Christmas at Aurora Village , New Year packages such as New Year's Eve in Lapland tour as well as tours starting in January.

Of course, a trip to Finland is not complete without visiting the vibrant capital Helsinki. This hotspot for design and architecture is not to be missed. You can take a break in a sauna, taste the Finnish cuisine, visit Nuuksio National park or simply take a stroll in Helsinki's design district.

See the modern marble façades of Finlandia Hall

Explore Finlandia Hall, a Nordic masterpiece designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. Located in central Helsinki, this concert venue is a monumental ode to nature and light, cloaked in gleaming strips of Carrara marble. Your Local Specialist might even let you in on the secret of its optical illusion.

Indulge in Helsinki's Market Hall for local flavors

As the oldest food market hall in Helsinki, Old Market Hall is brimming with old-time elegance and Finnish flavors. Established in 1889, the market has since been lovingly restored, and you can wander among the beautiful wooden stalls in search of traditional treats and local delicacies.

Enjoy a drink at Café Esplanad

Sweeten up your Finland trip with a visit to Café Esplanad, known for their giant cinnamon rolls (a Finnish pastry called Korvapuusti), that are freshly baked in the café. You’ll find a bubbling European atmosphere inside the store, or you can bask in the sunshine on the outdoor terrace.

Visit the Chapel of Silence

Take a moment for quiet reflection at the Chapel of Silence (also known as Kamppi Chapel). Located at the core of Helsinki, this small contemporary building inspires tranquility, with its curved wooden facade and a shielding interior. A peaceful retreat amidst the hubbub of the city, this is a magical place to pause and take a breath.

Stroll through Helsinki's Design District

Of all Helsinki attractions, the city’s Design District is one of the most alluring. Set in the center of Helsinki, the district is a web of creativity covering over 25 streets and 200 buildings. Discover artistic boutiques, visit the Design Museum, one of the oldest museums in the world, and sample Finnish cuisine in the vibrant cafes.

Our top 5 things to do in Finland

In a city that’s famed for its architecture and cuisine, you can spend hours exploring Helsinki’s streets. Wander aromatic markets and sweeping boulevards as you sample sweet pastries. Here are our favorite activities when we’re out on a trip, and our guests love them too.

Mannerheim Museum

Located in an impressive residential area in Helsinki, the Mannerheim Museum was established to preserve and showcase items from the life and times of Baron Gustaf Mannerheim, a famous president of Finland. The museum is located in the former home of Mannerheim, who lived there from from 1924 to 1951.

Seurasaari Island & Open Air Museum

Discover traditional Finnish rural life in the beautiful countryside at the Seurasaari Island & Open Air Museum. Located on an island just a few kilometers from Helsinki, you’ll find cottages, cabins, farmsteads and manors from the past four centuries. The buildings feature original furniture and dress that have been brought in from all over the country.

Luonnontieteellinen Museo

Housed in a former cadet school built in 1913, the Luonnontieteellinen Museo (Natural History Museum of Helsinki) contains a variety of zoological collections including skeletons, prehistoric remains and taxidermied animals. You’ll find an incredible taxidermied African elephant, a moose statue and an exhibition of Finnish nature.

Best museums in Finland

Every trip to Finland offers the chance to explore its intriguing museums. Discover the life of Baron Mannerheim, see a taxidermied African elephant, or roam the countryside in an open-air museum.

A traditional Finnish specialty, Lohikeitto is a delicious creamy soup made with chunks of salmon, leeks, boiled potatoes, topped with a sprinkling of dill. Simple and hearty, this well-loved dish is the perfect way to warm up your Finland tour.

Fried Baltic Herring

Found only in the Baltic sea, Baltic herring is one of the most popular fish species eaten in Finland. You can try it smoked, salted, pickled or baked, and it’s delicious when fried - doused in a creamy batter and fried in butter until crispy.

Karelian Pasty

Karelian pasties or pies are among the best-loved traditional Finnish dishes. Handmade with a thin rye crust, they are commonly filled with rice and carrots or mashed potatoes, and spread with an egg butter before eating them hot out of the oven.

Best food in Finland

Finnish cuisine is a highlight of all of our Finland travel experiences, with creamy soups, dark rye breads, buttery pastries, and plenty of fish like smoked salmon and fried herring.

What to pack for Finland

People packing for a tour

Water and windproof clothes

Protect yourself from Finland’s unpredictable weather with water and windproof clothes and a scarf - the Finns wear scarves all year round, so you’ll fit in with the locals.

Comfortable shoes

Whether you’re walking the streets of Helsinki or exploring forest trails, you’ll need a comfortable pair of shoes. If you’re visiting in winter, waterproof shoes are best for the snow.

An essential item all year round, sunglasses will protect your eyes from the bright Midnight Sun in summer, and the glaring snow in winter.

Finland is a photographer’s dream, from the city architecture to the Northern Lights. Remember to pack a waterproof bag for your equipment and bring extra batteries as they die faster in cold weather.

An adaptor plug

Voltage in Finland is 220V and the sockets are of Type C or F, with standard European 2-pin plugs.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and toiletry bottles.

Finland Tour Itinerary

Welcome to Helsinki, the capital of Finland – a bilingual country – where all street signs are written in Finnish and Swedish. Your friendly driver will meet you at the airport and transport you to your hotel in the heart of this perfectly clean city, where design is king, nature is an integral part of life and culture and education are taken very seriously. The next day, join an expert local guide on a 3-hour tour along Helsinki’s major landmarks and spend the rest of the day exploring on your own. Your third day in Finland will take you on a private tour of picturesque Porvoo, an old Finnish town where you will be charmed by its many shops, cafes, and attractions.

A 2-hour train ride from Helsinki will deliver you to Turku, clearly a medieval European town. You see it in the riverfront, the market square, the castle, and the cathedral. Turku, a vibrant modern city of many events, proudly holds the title of European Capital of Culture- 2011. The Aura River is the heart of the city. During the summer, the riverbanks come to life when people gather to eat, drink, and listen to music. There are old sailing ships moored in the river, and you can take cruises out into the archipelago or to nearby Naantali. You can go on a guided tour with a local expert who will take you to the town’s main landmarks, and you will also have plenty of time to explore on your own.

Another short train ride, this time from Turku, takes you to the lovely town of Tampere, where the balance between “industrial” and “natural” is well preserved. A large city by Finnish standards, with more than 200,000 inhabitants, Tampere has managed to keep the small town feel. The city center is compact in size, and the atmosphere is friendly and casual. Tampere is located on a scenic spot on a narrow isthmus between two lakes. The Tammerkoski rapids and their riverbanks form the backdrop for old industrial buildings, and ridges formed thousands of years ago by ancient seas and retreating ice offer fantastic views over the two lakes. Original architecture and innovative urban development blend together to please both viewers and users of the built environment.

Your Finnish adventure ends with a train ride back to Helsinki.

Scandinavia Tour FAQs

After landing at Keflavík Airport, you will travel to your hotel in Reykjavík. Located in the heart of Iceland’s capital city, Hotel Borg offers the best in both style and comfort. Following check-in, connect with your Tour Director before a visit to the Sky Lagoon. Relax in the warm waters of the geothermal lagoon and soak off your jet lag as your gaze upon incredible views of the North Atlantic. End your day with a gourmet kickoff dinner where you will get to know your fellow travelers and taste delicious Icelandic dishes. Your group tour of Iceland has officially started!

After breakfast, join a driving tour of Iceland’s capital. Notable sights include the famous Hallgrímskirkja Church, Harpa Concert Hall and the unique Sun Voyager sculpture. Following your tour, you will have free time to experience the city on your own. End your day with a delectable dinner and a drive to view the Northern Lights, if the skies are clear that night. If they are not, don’t worry. We will have many other opportunities!

Day 3 is dedicated to Iceland’s Golden Circle, which is made up of three must-see sights: Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir geothermal area and Thingvellir National Park. Nearby, at Fridheimar, you will enjoy a beautiful show with Icelanic horses and some organic, tomato-based delicacies as well. Following your guided tour of the Golden Circle, we will drive to Landeyjahöfn harbor and board a ferry to the Westman Islands. The short 45-minute boat ride will give you a new perspective of Iceland’s south coast. When the ferry docks on the main island, Heimaey, you might even spot a brave sheep grazing on the rocky cliffs surrounding you! Enjoy a delectable dinner at Hotel Vestmannaeyjar, your cozy accommodation for the evening.

Our private tours allow travelers to explore Scandinavian destinations with programs offering a great balance between pre-arranged activities and free time to explore. When implementing one of our private programs for you, we handle all the logistics involved, including: hotels, airport transfers, transportation from city to city and all guided activities and excursions. You will not be with a Tour Director throughout the program, but you will enjoy a number of sightseeing experiences led by experienced local guides. We can work with your desired dates, provided that availability exists at the many services involved in your program. This option is ideal for travelers who enjoy traveling independently and with a higher degree of flexibility to explore each location on their own.

Technically, Scandinavia refers primarily to Norway, Denmark and Sweden. When thinking of Nordic Countries, add to the list Finland and Iceland as well. Discover Scandinavia Tours can take you to any location in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. Currently we also offer extensions in Estonia, which is of particularly convenient access when visiting Finland, given that Tallinn – Estonia’s beautiful capital – can be reached by a short ferry ride from Helsinki.

Simple: just call us at  800-936-2814  and talk to one of our Scandinavia specialists. Alternatively, you can email us at [email protected]

If you are interested in a group tour, you can book any departure as long as there are seats available (but remember: we have a maximum of 12 seats per departure, so booking early is recommendable). If you want a private tour, you can book as far as 2 years in advance. For last-minute travelers, please keep in mind that we need a minimum of 30 days to implement a private program.

With our group tours of Scandinavia you can choose from a number of fixed departures throughout the year. If you need more flexible dates, our private tours allow us to work with any dates you have in mind, provided that we find adequate availability at all hotels and other services included in your particular program.

Yes, we do. For details regarding commissions, please visit our TRAVEL AGENT portal.

You will find our cancellation policy, along with all our terms and conditions,  RIGHT HERE.

Nuuksio National Park in spring. Misty morning after a cold night April. Nature near Helsinki, Finland.

Finnish Friend

Guided Hiking Tours in Finland

5-Star Guided Hiking Tours in Finland

My name is Mikko and you can think of me as your Finnish Friend who loves being out in nature.

❤   Reasons to Go With Me

My hikes are private for you, you don’t have to go with a big group of unknown people.

Freedom of hiking distances and schedules, and your own peace and quiet thanks to the small group size.

You can borrow all hiking and camping gear needed, they’re included in the prices.

You don’t want a heavy backpack to ruin all the joys of being in nature, we use ultralight gear on my trips.

I can adapt the tours to your wishes and needs, for example if you want pickup from your hotel and drop off at the airport, or to come with children or a dog, or if you have physical disabilities.

I can accommodate almost every diet.

There are no booking fees or payments in advance, you only pay after the tour.

Popular Hikes Near Helsinki

Nuuksio National Park day hike

» See All Tours

I’ve built my tours based on things you need to think about when visiting national parks around Helsinki, to make it as easy as possible for you to just enjoy your authentic experience, in all the best places, at any time of year.

Everything has been taken care of for you. You don’t need to worry about transport, weather and clothing or camping gear, food or drinks, finding your way or finding peace.

All you need to do is walk in nature. Let your mind and body wander in the forest.

We hike responsibly and respect nature. We leave only footprints behind.

What My Customers Think of Me

Transport from Helsinki to Nuuksio National Park in minibus.

My tours include transport from your hotel, Airbnb or the airport to our destination and back. There’s plenty of space in my car to change your clothes and stretch your legs.

I’ll pick you up when you want to go.

I can pick you up from the airport if you want to go to nature straight away, or if you’re just on a stopover or layover in Helsinki, or pick you up from your hotel and take you to the airport after our trip. You can leave your luggage in my car.

Hiking and camping gear, clothing, shoes and other equipment

Hiking and camping gear are included on tours

You can borrow a backpack, tent, sleeping bag and pad, pillow, jackets, trousers, shoes, gloves, beanies and caps, socks, snowshoes, walking poles, towel and everything else you might need on a camping trip or a day hike.

You’ll stay dry, you’ll stay warm. Unless you go swimming.

And you can keep your own clothes clean by borrowing mine.

Food, Snacks and Drinks

Real coffee on hiking tours

All meals you need during the trips are included from the moment you step in to my minibus.

Eat breakfast before I pick you up. On day hikes I provide snacks, drinks and a lunch in Finnish style. On longer camping trips all the snacks, drinks and meals are included. That means you get breakfasts, snacks while walking, lunch and dinner after we set camp. Warm drinks like coffee or tea you can get whenever you want.

Let me know about your diets or allergies on the booking form, I’ll accommodate everyone.

Nuuksio National Park in spring in May

You don’t need to know anything about hiking to go on my tours. I’ll take care of you.

Often on day hikes you don’t even need to carry a backpack, on overnight hiking and camping trips you’ll carry a very light pack. Otherwise you can choose how much you’ll participate in the work like setting up tents and packing up, or cooking.

Because we’ll hike in a small group without a predetermined plan and schedule I can change our route in the middle of the hike to accommodate your wishes or the conditions.

I want to show you the best places, but the most important thing on every hike is always safety, and that we’ll return to the car by walking on our own feet. As your guide I’ll make sure that happens.

Being your guide also means telling you about Finnish nature and helping you in every way possible. Let me know of your wishes and I’ll do my best to fulfil them.

Relaxed Schedule

Nuuksio National Park in fall. Having my morning coffee by a beautiful lake. Hiking near Helsinki, Finland.

I want you to have a stress-free experience, we can go when it suits you and stay in the destination for long. There’s no schedule for preplanned route or programs to follow, we are free to go and do as we please.

If you decide you just want to sit down in peace and sense the world around you, we can do that. If you want to pick berries or mushrooms, we can do that. If you want to see as many lakes as possible and walk a long distance, we can do that. If you want to spend time alone with your loved one in the middle of a quiet forest, you can do that.

All the Typical Finnish Activities

Nuuksio National Park in summer in July. Handful of wild blueberries, or actually bilberries. Nature near Helsinki.

We can do all the things Finnish people do when walking in nature, like pick berries, forage mushrooms, swim in the lakes, snowshoe, or just relax in the peace and quiet.

You don’t need to book different activities, they’re all included according to season and weather.

Privacy and Personal Experience

Nuuksio National Park in fall. Finnish forest on quiet autumn days in November. Hiking near Helsinki.

My tours are private for you or your small group, and I want to take you to places where you can have the peace Finland’s nature is all about.

By being alone we can have much purer, personal experience of the natural world around us. We’ll experience small moments in time that we are the only witnesses to.

We were very pleased with the service provided by our travel consultant, Sofia. She was very prompt in replying to all our queries. We enjoyed the itinerary where different experiences were offered - various train rides and cruises. The hotels were good, all centrally located and spacious with very good breakfasts provided. Everything is planned for with detailed information, maps and vouchers. All we needed to do was present ourselves at the various venues. We felt assured that there is someone who knows our plans and who we could call upon should we require any assistance. I would definitely recommend Nordic Visitor to anyone who wants to go Scandinavia on a free-and-easy yet have all the hassle of planning taken care of.

7 Excellent Northern Lights Tours in FINLAND

northern lights tours in finland

Ready to see the aurora borealis in Finland? Get your aurora-hunting off to a great start with this selection of excellent locally-operated northern lights tours in Finland Lapland, plus several good reasons to join a tour vs going alone.

Travelers from around the world make their way to Finnish Lapland every year to capture a glimpse of the elusive aurora borealis. And although there are many excellent options when it comes to selecting a great tour, not all of the northern lights tours in Finland are created equal.

And while it is possible to head out on your own with your fingers crossed, in hopes of finding an amazing location to hunt for the ghostly lights, it is best to go on a tour with a reputable operator, who offers a more personalized, local experience.

In this article, we share a selection of the best northern lights tours in Finland, to help make your hunt for the elusive aurora borealis a successful one. And if you’re on the fence about whether to book a tour or not, we also share some very good reasons for why you should.

Your Guide to Northern Lights Tours in Finland Lapland

Why book into northern lights tours in finland.

Personally speaking, as someone who has travelled to Finnish Lapland to see the northern lights, I highly recommend booking into a locally-operated tour rather than attempt to seek out the aurora yourself. During my trip to Lapland, I joined two separate tours on different nights, and even though the lights didn’t show due to cloud cover (no fault of the tour operators) I don’t regret it a single bit.

Why? The main reason, to be honest, was the access to ‘secret’ rural locations. Staying in resorts, we were surrounded by bright lights which would have obscured the view. But Lapland is a quiet place; you can’t simply call a taxi in the middle of the night, and hiking in the snow at night without a guide was out of the question.

The other reason I loved the tours, was because it allowed me a unique opportunity to experience the local Lappish lifestyle… I enjoyed chatting with locals and learning about my Finnish ancestry, while standing in the thick snow, around a smouldering fire with hot cocoa in hand. Those little touches made it an occasion to remember, regardless of whether the aurora appeared or not.

That’s my personal experience, but here are several more reasons to book into a northern lights tour in Finland, instead of going alone.

locally operated northern lights tours in finland

#1 Expertise and Local Knowledge

For starters, heading out into the Finnish wilderness with a professional northern lights tour guide will increase your opportunities of not only viewing the elusive lights, but also allows access into some of the best locations for creating that truly memorable experience.

Experienced local guides possess intimate knowledge of the best locations and optimal times for Northern Lights sightings. Their expertise extends beyond predicting auroral activity to understanding the local geography and weather patterns, thereby ensuring a higher likelihood of witnessing the auroras in their full splendor. With this knowledge, they can select locations that will give you the best viewing experience possible, that you wouldn’t be able to access on your own.

#2 Comfort and Convenience

Professional tour guides, also offer their own transportation. Most of the time, they offer reliable and comfortable seats, food, and amazing insight into the auroras, and the local history of Lapland. This comfort makes it more convenient for travelers, as there is no need to procure their own transportation or attempt to navigate through unfamiliar winter terrain. Some local tour guides may even offer snacks and hot cocoa, which will make passing the time more enjoyable.

#3 Specialized Equipment and Services

Because of how cold the Finnish Lapland gets during the peak of the winter months, it’s important to make sure that you have the right equipment to keep you warm out in the snow. Many popular local tour guides go above and beyond by providing you with important equipment such as boots, and thermal suits, to keep you warm throughout the frigid Arctic night. You may even find a tour that can take you out on a sleigh ride, or introduce you to the traditional Sami culture.

#4 Safety Assurance

Dealing with the Arctic environment during the winter months can be challenging even for an experienced outdoorsman. Professional tour operators prioritize safety over anything else and ensure that you have the and follow proper extreme weather behavior that will allow you to focus on the enjoyment of the experience.

#5 Photography Assistance

But let’s not forget, that if you are going to go hunting for the elusive Northern lights, then you’ll want to take some amazing photographs of your experience. Because taking photographs of the night sky is so difficult, many professional tour companies not only provide assistance and training on how to get the best shots imaginable, but others may even offer specialized rental equipment that will make capturing the lights an even easier prospect.

#6 Optimal Timing

Capturing a glimpse of the elusive lights is not just about visiting Lapland during the peak of the frigid winter months, it’s also about knowing what time of night to head out into the field. Professional tour operators in Finland are experienced in predicting where and when the northern lights will appear.

Benefits of Supporting Local Tour Operators

Granted, larger tour operators may have more extensive resources, but a lot of the money they collect, does not go to the local economy. When visiting the Finnish Lapland, it’s important to support local tour operators, as this will have a positive impact on the communities you are visiting. Local tour operators will provide you with a more intimate, authentic, and of course, culturally rich experience.

Local Insight

As locally operated tours are owned and run by individuals who are passionate about the region they live in, as well as the northern lights, you will be able to enjoy more local insight by selecting a small tour operator versus a larger national chain. They can provide you with more intimate information about the local culture and traditions, as well as the history of the region. All of this adds more authenticity to the experience.

Personalized Attention

Since local operators tend to run smaller tour group sizes, this ensures that you are given a more personalized and intimate experience. Larger tour guides can provide big comfortable buses to take you out into the countryside, but going out and larger groups reduces the amount of time that you have to interact with the guides.

Secluded Experiences

Of course, one of the biggest benefits of choosing a local tour operator is their personal knowledge of the region. This allows them to take you out to more lesser-known and secluded locations, where you will not be inundated by the larger crowds created by the national companies. All of this allows you to achieve a Northern Lights viewing experience that is peaceful and more exclusive.

Economic Impact

Whenever you spend money with a local tour operator, the money that you spend is directly contributed to the economy of the local community. Simply put, every dollar you spend on a local tour, is circulated within the community, which means that not only does the tour operator benefit from providing you the experience, but all of the local businesses and the residents benefit as well. This fosters more sustainable tourism experiences.

Tailor-Made Experiences

Because local tour companies are operated by individuals, they can be more flexible with their itinerary, to provide you with a more memorable experience. They are capable of adjusting their schedules to fit your needs, and can even incorporate particular cultural activities that you would like to experience while you are in Lapland. Larger operators often overlook these tailor-made experiences.
