Review: East of Eli

Saturday night, We Found New Music attended a highly energetic show by the newly debuted East of Eli. Led by Nathan West and backed by his (pretty famous actress) wife, Chyler Leigh, and really great musicians, the show drew quite a crowd.

The set started off with ‘Crazy Beautiful,’ a the title track off the last EP. The song had a really thick, bass bumping sound that got the crowd moving. Jordan, the keyboardist, Nathan West, the lead singer, Johann Frank, the guitarist, and Erik Kertes, the bassist, all sang harmoniously and the layered voices were quite nice together. While on the topic of the musicians, I should add that Kiel Feher is a super talented local drummer (whom I’ve had the pleasure of seeing a few times) and the bassist blew me away. Erik has backed such artists as Shakira, Michael Buble, Ariana Grande and many others.

Nathan shared some very sweet sentiments about his wife, who surprised the crowd and joined him in a duet for their new song, ‘Child’s Play.’ One of my favorites of the night, this song had heavy hip hop, blues and rock influences and kept the place bumping. The song developed into a great cover of The Police’s ‘Message in a Bottle,’ where the Johann’s solo skills really shined. (PS: what a pedal set up he had, for you gear nerds out there!)

Chyler joined East of Eli on stage for a few more songs and left before the last song, dedicated to the couple’s son. ‘Lost Transmissions’ is the title track of the upcoming EP. This song was really wonderfully powered by Jordan’s amazing belting ability. It was the most modern song of the night and I look forward to hearing the rest of the EP upon its release.

An encore ensued and East of Eli pleased the very dedicated fans with a cover song, and when I say dedicated, I mean dedicated – tattoo dedicated! And the line for merch at the show’s end was down the block outside!

Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams on Tour is a hopeful, tear-jerking delight

This, for me, is the antidote to those appalling race riots. If only all those involved could be made to watch it.

Eli is 18. He has a face like an angel, a body like a long streak of piss, and a history of bad behaviour. But when he stands at the crease, he looks so right there, this lad from Blackpool. Thwack. It’s the final over. His team, a motley crew if ever there was one, needs three off the last ball to win. Can he do it? Eyes swivel, as one, to the boundary. Yes, he can. A six!

On the minibus home after the match, he and the rest of the gang sing “Sweet Caroline” with such tuneless enthusiasm it fairly breaks the heart. Briefly, they are as buoyant as barrage balloons. Nothing can dent their happiness, not even the prospect of curry for tea.

You might remember these boys, though Eli is a new recruit. Two years ago, they were the stars of a series in which Andrew Flintoff, the former England international all-rounder who comes from Preston just as they all do (Eli excepted), took them by the scruffs of their necks, and tried to teach them cricket, self-respect, discipline and a dozen other qualities besides. Many of them had painful back stories: Adnan was only 15 when he arrived in Britain from Afghanistan in the back of a lorry; Ben had been homeless; Sean was a school refusenik who liked to fight and drink vodka. It was all incredibly moving and vital in ways I struggled to describe, and I loved it. Flintoff is the PE teacher every school needs, but only rarely finds.

The plan for the next series was to take the lads on tour to India, the better to open their eyes to the world (“Benidorm!” shouts one, on being told plane tickets will be involved). Only then, disaster. In December 2022, Flintoff had an accident while filming Top Gear , one so serious he was lucky to survive (the show didn’t).

A tiny bit of Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams on Tour was filmed before this crash, but the large majority of it was shot afterwards. Watch it, and you’ll see that the mere fact it went ahead at all is remarkable. Flintoff’s recovery was long and complex; for a long time, he barely left his house. But it also gives this series real depth: if he is still there to support his makeshift team, now he needs them to do the same for him.

The Saturday Read

Morning call.

The series is in four parts. I’ve seen two, just about – my constant blubbing having got in the way somewhat. This, for me, is the antidote to those appalling race riots, and if only all those involved could be made to watch it. Adnan has secured asylum at last. He has also won a sports scholarship to a smart school. His English isn’t just better; it’s like poetry, at moments. On tour, he’s the only Muslim boy, and while the team is in India, it’s Ramadan and he’s fasting. Seeing how lonely this is for him, Flintoff suggests they all fast for the day, a proposition no one resists.

In the evening, as the sun comes down, Adnan takes two teammates, Dylan and Hemi, with him to the mosque where they break their fast with delicious samosas, two pasty English lads among hundreds of smiling Indian men. If this sounds cheesy, well, again, just watch it. What sets this show apart is its naturalness, the feeling that the boys, half cocksure and half agonisingly vulnerable, barely grasp the cameras are there. What will they do next? Like Flintoff, we never quite know.

It’s good to see the team play gully (backstreet) cricket in Kolkata, where they’re based. Clichéd as it is to talk about the language of sport, here it is an instant lingua franca. But oh, the British abroad! None of them have travelled; passports were secured for filming and placed in the safe hands of Flintoff’s right-hand man, the former Lancashire cricketer, Kyle Hogg.

The boys’ daring goes hand in hand with a squeamish and distinctly pathetic timidity. Sean has a fit at the sight of a fried pomfret. Ben admits to having swallowed not a thing since the Pringles he scoffed on the flight. They want KFC, not mutton curry and coconut dhal. Flintoff, who’ll eat anything, is stern. “Just try it,” he’ll say, as if to a toddler. His expression is caught throughout between amazement and gratitude. Second chances. Anyone who is lucky enough to get one should grab it with both (turmeric-stained) hands.

SAN DIEGO – The fifth High School All-American Game hosted by Major League Baseball is in the books, and as has been the case since its inception in Cleveland in 2019, the prep class of 2025 showed off a whole lot of tools and stuff.

Don’t worry if you missed it, the game will air again on MLB Network at 11 a.m. ET on Saturday, Aug. 17. But let’s take a look at the standout performances and moments from Wednesday night’s game at Petco Park, won by the National team, 4-1. Pay attention, because many of these names will be called early in next year’s Draft. Last year’s game featured six future first-rounders in the 2024 Draft.

1. Gavin Fien, 3B, Great Oak HS (Calif.): Fien took home the MLB Develops MVP Award after notching two hits and two RBIs for the National team. The Texas recruit registered some of the highest exit velocities of the night, including three balls over 100 mph. It’s what he’s been doing all summer. Fien hit his way onto Team USA and then batted .400 (10-for-25) with 11 RBIs as the 18U team took gold in the World Cup qualifier in Panama.

2. Miguel Sime Jr., RHP, Poly Prep (NY): These showcase games often feature premium velocity and Sime did not disappoint. The LSU recruit has been up to 100 mph in the past and he touched 98 in this game. He threw five of the 10 fastest pitches in the game, all 97-98 mph (hat tip to Landon Harmon, who had the other five). More importantly, he threw strikes while fanning two, even landing a solid slider, an important area of development for him.

3. Kayson Cunningham, INF, Lady Bird Johnson HS (Texas): After hitting .417/.483/.542 with 12 RBIs for Team USA in Panama, the Texas recruit kept on raking on Wednesday. The left-handed-hitting infielder picked up a pair of hits and also showed off his wheels, swiping three bags.

4. Mason Pike, INF/RHP, Puyallup HS (Wash.): While there was plenty of two-way talent on display in the game, Pike would get the John Olerud Award for the contest if one was awarded. He made consistent hard contact and had two hits, then came in to pitch the final inning for the National team. The Oregon State recruit struck out two, showing off a fastball with high spin that was consistently up to 93-94 mph.

5. Eli Willits, INF, Fort Cobb-Broxton HS (Okla.): The son of former big leaguer Reggie Willits didn’t pick up a hit, but showed exactly what kind of table-setter he can be. Committed to Oklahoma, Willits walked to lead off the game, then stole second and third, forcing an errant throw from the catcher that enabled him to score the first run of the game and give the American team a short-lived 1-0 lead.

6. Sean Gamble, OF, IMG Academy (Fla.): Hailing from Iowa, Gamble moved to IMG to advance his game. The Vanderbilt recruit had the catch of the night, ranging far to right-center field and diving to rob Dean Moss of extra bases. What made it even more impressive was that fact that the jury is still out on whether he can play up the middle on the dirt, though that catch will definitely have teams thinking about him as a legit center fielder.

7. Luke Billings, OF, Prosper HS (Texas): Billings, a Texas A&M recruit, has played all over the place, with some scouts wanting to see him catch more because his plus arm that fires 94-mph fastballs off the mound could work really well in that regard. In this game, he manned left field and showed off his athleticism by covering a ton of ground and making a running catch to end a two-run inning for the National team in the second.

8. Catcher hoses: Two shoutouts to close things out. Cunningham led off the bottom of the first with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He tried to steal third, but Trent Grendlinger (Huntington Beach HS, Calif.) had other ideas. The Mississippi State recruit showed off his plus arm and quick exchange by throwing out Cunningham. In the sixth, Willits reached on a one-out walk, clearly looking to add to his stolen-base total. Quinn Schambow (Libertyville HS, Ill.) wasn’t deterred by his speed though, and the Oklahoma State recruit caught Willits straying too far, back-picking him at first.
