Surfing Travel Insurance | Protecting Your Trip & Gear

Surfing Travel Insurance

The list of surf trip costs is endless, from flight tickets to accommodation, transport, food, travel gear, and a new board or two if we’re lucky, and that’s not to mention any coaching and extra activities. But one thing often overlooked, particularly on a budget surf trip, is surf travel insurance— an annoying additional cost but one that is just as essential as your plane ticket.

We’re all guilty of it, right? “Ahhh, it’ll be fine; I won’t need insurance; that would be a waste if nothing goes wrong.” On surf trips, everything is, and hopefully will be, fine until it isn’t. Surf trips, by nature, are unpredictable, and there are countless opportunities for things to go awry.

But when things go to sh*t, they go to sh*t very quickly, and paradisical dreams can turn into life-threatening nightmares in seconds. If you’ve got no cover to back yourself up in emergencies, then you not only put yourself in a dangerous (and potentially life-threatening) situation but under a mountain of debt you’ll be paying back for years to come.

However, with a small pre-trip payment, you can prevent such situations and give yourself the peace of mind you won’t finish the trip with a $10,000 medical bill, injured or stranded. Surf travel insurance can also cover you for other surf trip mishaps, such as delayed flights and lost or stolen baggage. In this article, we dive into everything you need to know about surf travel insurance, from what to look for, the essential criteria, why you need it, and the best companies to buy policies from. We have a heap to get through, so let’s dive in.

Table of Contents

Why Do You Need Surf Travel Insurance?

If you’ve been on a surf trip, you won’t need me to tell you how many things can and inevitably will go wrong. From severe injuries and emergency evacuations to stolen boards and delayed flights, surf travel insurance helps you in countless ways:

  • Serious Injury
  • Minor surf accidents
  • Traffic collisions (Bali mopeds)
  • Delayed flights
  • Broken surf equipment
  • Lost or stolen baggage
  • Natural disaster

But while the list of potential surf travel mishaps is long, not all surf travel insurance companies cover these things. Instead, you’ll have to look at specific policies to see what is and isn’t covered on your respective policy. Always check your policy wording carefully, and no matter what insurance you get, here are the essential criteria for any surf travel insurance policy.

Essential Surf Travel Insurance Criteria

Medical expenses .

This is the big one. Medical expense coverage is crucial for any surf trip . Whether going on a mellow longboarding vacation to Sri Lanka or chasing slabs deep in the Australian desert, medical expenses cover your medical bill should you get injured.

For example, if you’ve fallen off and hit the reef at Ulutwau , gotten cut up, and potentially broken a bone, you need to go to the hospital to get checked out and have a cast put on. That doesn’t come free for foreigners in Indonesia. With medical expenses covered by your policy, you can get the care you need without worrying about paying for it immediately.

To hammer the importance of this home, I was once on a surf trip to Lakey Peak, Sumabwa, a relatively remote Indonesian surf paradise. One day we were eating lunch, and a surfer was being paddled in from the surf, having badly broken his leg and needing urgent medical attention and pain relief. His friends informed us, and everyone else at the camp, he was an American with no travel insurance!

They did a whip round to get as much money together as possible, which I’m sure didn’t completely cover the cost of his hospital transfer and treatment. This is exactly the situation you want to avoid, and for the sake of a few extra dollars, it’s stupid not to get insurance.

Medical Evacuation

For serious injuries and life-threatening situations, medical evacuation insurance is needed. Hopefully, you’ll never need this, but when you do, you’ll be super thankful you had it! Let’s say you’re on a surf trip to the Mentawaiis (if you’ve been there, you’ll know how frickin remote it is). You get a head or spinal injury from hitting the shallow reef and need urgent care.

The closest hospital is Padang–usually a 4-hour boat trip, but you need a helicopter to airlift you to the hospital in Padang. Padang isn’t the biggest city, and if the hospital there isn’t equipped to deal with your injury, you’ll need to be transferred to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur! Yep, that’s a lot of flying, and costs soon rack up. Medical evacuation covers these costs essential.

Personal Liability

Another vital aspect of your surf travel insurance coverage is personal liability. In short, this means an injury you cause to someone else. It doesn’t matter how good a surfer you are in crowded line-ups; it only takes a misread of an oncoming section to run over someone. Personal liability coverage helps cover their medical expenses if you injure or seriously hurt them. This is essential for helping them get the care they need (regardless of their insurance) and gives you the peace of mind of not having to pay for their medical expenses.

Surfing Travel Insurance

What Does Surf Insurance Typically Cover?

What’s covered in your insurance policy will depend on who you purchase cover with, and not all policies will cover the same thing. For example, you’ll want to cover bases such as medical expenses, evacuation, and personal liability, but often things such as baggage delays, damage to equipment, trip cancellations, etc., are things you buy as extras on top of your policy. Well worth considering.

Types of Surf Travel Insurance

For surf travel insurance, there isn’t a specific company that operates as a sole surf travel insurance provider. Therefore, you must look for extreme sport and adventure travel companies that offer surfing insurance. These companies provide travel insurance for backpackers traveling long term (6 months +), extreme sports such as snowboarding, watersports, bungee jumping, and skydiving. Additionally, many of these companies have dedicated website pages for surf travel insurance.

Best Companies for Surf Travel Insurance

I’ve taken countless surf travel insurance policies out in my time but generally return to the same two. These top two companies are the best for dealing with surf travel, whether it’s offering a surf-specific policy, making a claim, or getting insurance that can be extended if you want to extend a surf trip. Let’s take a closer look at my top two.

World Nomads

World Nomads is a favorite for backpackers and surf trippers, offering insurance policies that cover a wide range of extreme sports and daring backpacker activities. If you’re heading on a gap year and throwing surfing in there or want to cover for your next surf trip, World Nomads will have a policy for you. But, by far, my favorite aspect of World Nomads insurance is the ability to extend your policy while you’re away. I often go on extended 6-month + surf ventures, and if I want to stay longer, I can simply contact World Nomads and extend my policy. Pretty cool, right?

GIG Insurance

GIG Insurance caters to extreme sports and adventure travel, from bungee jumping to snowboarding, Scuba diving, skydiving, and surfing. You’ll need to take out coverage and then add surfing as an activity to your policy. My favorite aspect of GIG insurance is that you can talk to a representative over the phone who can tailor a policy according to your travel plans!

Making a Claim: Does it Pay & Is it Worth it?

Yes and no. This will depend on your exact policy. Generally, the more you pay and the more extensive your coverage, the more likely the company will pay out. For instance, if you’ve got a policy including extras such as trip cancellation or damage to equipment, you can make a claim and receive money to cover this. However, it’s always important to read your policy wording carefully. If you have a basic plan with no extras, you’ll unlikely be covered for anything other than the essentials (medical evacuation, etc.)

It’s also worth considering that many of these policies come with premiums, meaning if you claim, they will only pay a maximum (not the total amount of your broken surfboard). You’ll have to pay a deductible from that amount. So, always weigh up whether a claim is worth it. And this can also affect what you pay for your following policy. Just think of your insurance as covering emergencies, and if you never have to use it, great! And if you do, you’re covered and can focus on recovery.

Final Words

It’s no doubt that surf travel insurance is essential. You’d be silly to go on a surf trip without it. I’ve seen it too many times, meeting surf travelers in remote Indonesian islands thinking having no insurance makes them a gnarlier budget surf traveler, which is all good until you’re helping the same person with a broken leg and a $10,000 medical bill. So, at the bare minimum, get yourself some insurance that covers the following:

  • Medical expenses
  • Medical evacuation
  • Personal liability

Also, consider adding extras that give you peace of mind, such as baggage delay, trip cancellation, baggage damage, etc. Hopefully, you’ll never need to make a claim on any of your surf trips but get insured anyway, have peace of mind, and enjoy your trip!

Kitesurfing Travel Insurance

Kitesurfing travel insurance is a necessity for those planning to engage in kitesurfing during their trip to another country. It allows you to protect yourself and your equipment from potential risks.

Levels of Kiteboarding Difficulty

photo of a professional athlete performing a trick while kitesurfing

Kitesurfing is an exciting form of active leisure that attracts many athletes. It involves riding a special board with a kite in the air, powered by the force of the wind. However, before starting this sport, it is important to determine its degree of difficulty and danger. There are several tiers of kitesurfing difficulty.

  • Beginner . At the beginner level, athletes learn the technique of using the board and kite. They start by learning how to launch the kite, control it, and confidently stand on the board. Training takes place in calm water with mild wind.
  • Intermediate . At the intermediate level, kitesurfers learn advanced techniques such as turns, jumps, and freestyle maneuvers. They can now practice on larger waves.
  • Advanced . The third level involves performing complex tricks in open water with strong wind and waves. Advanced surfers use techniques such as big air, looping, and more.
  • Expert . Athletes at the expert level are true professionals who expose themselves to risks. They often surf on big waves in rough seas, demonstrating complex tricks like megaloops and backrolls.

Let’s consider the conditions for kitesurfing in different countries.

Insurance Considerations

If you are planning a kitesurfing holiday, it is recommended to obtain the best insurance policy for this type of sport.

Kitesurfing equipment is quite expensive, so it is important to have insurance coverage for potential loss or damage. Additionally, injuries can occur while on the water. Kitesurfing travel insurance includes medical support for emergencies.

There is a black and orange sign in the sand on the beach that says "kiteboarding zone" and an arrow pointing in the right direction

The price of insurance depends on various factors, including the duration of the trip and the level of coverage. For example, an annual travel insurance with kitesurfing cover will be more expensive than a single-trip policy, as it covers multiple journeys.

Before obtaining kitesurfing travel insurance, it is advisable to review reviews from other travelers regarding the quality of insurance policies. Based on these reviews, you can choose the optimal option that best suits your needs.

Depending on the chosen type of insurance, coverage may include loss or damage to kitesurfing equipment, medical expenses in case of injury, and liability towards third parties. It is important to carefully review the policy’s terms and conditions or consult with an insurance advisor before obtaining coverage.

Kiteboarding insurance can be purchased for a single trip, multiple trips, or a year. Choose the option that best suits your needs.

Yes, it is possible. However, the insurance will only take effect after 3 days or after crossing the border into another country. It is advisable to obtain kitesurfing travel insurance in advance to ensure coverage in case of risks.

Kitesurfing insurance: everything you need to know

the best kiitesurfing insurance for equipment

Are you wondering about kitesurfing insurance?

If you find yourself in a location with access to the ocean, don’t pass up the opportunity to go kitesurfing. Kite surfing is a unique form of adventure since it incorporates elements from a variety of extreme sports, including surfing, paragliding, windsurfing, wakeboarding, and gymnastics. So this article provides you with enough information about kitesurfing travel insurance

Like any new sport that has a level of risk, many kitesurfers wonder if they can be insured in kitesurfing. The answer, of course, is YES.  If you plan to get insurance for kitesurfing , in the next post we will give you the keys.

The insurance sector advances at the same pace as society and offers its solutions to new coverage needs. Even in extreme sports such as Kitesurfing, which, being powered by a kite, can propel itself at high speed when strong gusts of wind intervene.

Although some specialists maintain that kitesurfing is not particularly dangerous for amateurs,  some professionals end up risking too much and can especially suffer broken bones due to heavy falls. Experts say that the main danger of this sport is to start learning it without training offered by a specialist school. When you know and have experience, riding a bike can be more dangerous than Kitesurfing.

Normally, the kitesurfing insurance is not specific only for kitesurfing and it is usually included in insurance for extreme sports, or even in travel insurance, which we will talk about later

Like most of extreme sports insurance, the coverage of a kitesurfing insurance, usually covers medical, hospital and surgical expenses, 24-hour assistance, payment of crutches, search and rescue of the insured, repatriation and medical transport of injured; displacement of a family member due to the hospitalization of the insured; extension of hotel stay due to accident; repatriation in case of death; sending medicines abroad, sending urgent messages, and civil liability, among many others.

If you want to know more about kitesurfing insurance, in this post we bring you some valuable information that you may find quite interesting if you are thinking in being covered

As with any water sport, safety must be taken seriously when kitesurfing. . Slightly less severe injuries such as twisting or hitting the ground or the waves might occur significantly more frequently. Helmets, wetsuits, and chest armour are all highly advised, as is making sure you have the proper kitesurfing safety equipment on-hand anytime you hit the ocean for a ride on the wind.

Personal Accident cover isn’t quite what it sounds like. If you have an accident and fall over and break your wrist, that’s covered under normal Medical Expenses. Personal Accident is basically: Loss of sight, loss of limb or permanent disablement.

What the Policy says under Section B. Personal Accident:

In the event of the Insured Person sustaining bodily injury arising wholly and exclusively from violent accidental external and visible means which injury shall solely and independently of any other cause result in his/her death or disablement within twelve calendar months of the injury, the Insurer hereby agrees to pay up to the amount shown in the Table of Benefits applicable to the type of policy purchased and shown on the Validation Certificate.

Provided that:

  • A) the death benefit payable is reduced to £1,000 if the Insured Person is under 16 years of age or 66 years of age or over at the time of death B) the total compensation in respect of any one Insured Person shall not exceed £10,000 for BUDGET Policies, £15,000 forSTANDARD Policies or £25,000 for PREMIER Policies.

Definitions

Loss of Limbs : loss or severance at or above the wrist or ankle or total permanent loss of use of an entire arm or leg.

Loss of Sight : total and irrecoverable loss of sight which shall be

considered as having occurred:

  • a) in both eyes if your name is added to the Register of Blind Persons on the authority of a fully qualified ophthalmic specialist.
  • b) in one eye if the degree of sight remaining after correction is 3/60 or less on the Snellen Scale.

Permanent Total Disablement: A disability which has lasted for at least 12 months from which the Insurer believes the Insured Person will never recover and which prevents them from carrying out any gainful occupation for which they are reasonably qualified by way of training, education or experience.

Special Condition

If an Insured Person was already disabled before the bodily injury or already had a condition which is gradually getting worse, the Insurer may reduce their payment. Any reduced payment will be based on their medical assessment of the difference between:

  • the disability after the bodily injury; and
  • the extent to which the disability is affected by the disability or condition before the Accident.

To add any of our Activity Packs, just follow the Quote form - to stage 3 - there you will find all of the optional extras.

The Additional Mountain Rescue section of cover is a specific level of cover that takes effect when helicopter rescue is deemed necessary by the local Rescue Authorities due to a non-medical emergency such as natural disasters or adverse weather conditions.

This section of cover does not apply to Medically Necessary helicopter evacuations - these costs are covered under the Medical & Repatriation section of cover.

Surfers Hype

Best travel insurance for surfers.

best travel insurance for surfers

Sometimes, despite the best of intentions and meticulous planning, things still go wrong when travelling. Sometimes it’s just a quick stomach bug, a missed flight, or missing luggage. Other times it can be a lot worse.

When it comes to travel, surfers need to prepare for the worst possible outcome. Granted, so many surf trips are nothing but perfect waves and good friends, but there are risks involved with surfing in a foreign country.

The most obvious ones are :

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Eye injuries
  • Food poisoning
  • Various of foreign bugs bites and viruses
  • We are also in sea creatures’ territory, which presents a different kind of risk
  • Some of the best surf destinations can be found in the earthquake-prone ‘Ring of Fire’ like Chile, Mexico, Indonesia, Philippines, Peru, and Papa New Guinea. So nature can be another risk factor you need to consider

We also tend to go quite hard as travelling surfers and in unknown surroundings and unpredictable circumstances, it’s important to have the right safety measures in place.

Having the right safety measures in place is crucial when things go wrong, but it will also help you to relax and surf more freely, knowing your safety is taken care of.

The most important part of your safety measures while going on a surf trip is to get good surf travel insurance, with the right coverage.

Next up comes things as, knowing where the nearest emergency department is, studying the surf breaks before paddling out, having a medical aid kit with you, etc. The better you prepare, the more likely you are to have a smooth surf trip.

Disclaimer : We are not insurance experts. This article is based on our personal experiences and research as travelling surfers, looking for the right insurance coverage.

Every person’s situation is different – only you can make sure, that you get the right coverage for your needs and circumstances. However , this article will give a good overview of the best options available.

What to look for in a surf travel insurance

If things do go bad, you’re going to need very specific travel insurance. Not having the correct cover can have very fatal consequences. Therefore you need to read all documentation and ask as many questions as needed, to understand what coverage you are getting.

Suppose you are injured, and a very serious medical decision has to be made. In that case, that decision will be based on your insurance cover. If you’re the only person who knows your insurance policy, you need to be able to rattle it off to the person who is trying to help, so take control.

No one can tell you what exact insurance, will be the best for you, because it all depends on things like your home country, your travel destination, the spots you are going to surf at, etc.

Most important surf insurance criteria's

  • Medical expenses and cover: If you get hurt, injured, or fall ill during the surf trip.
  • Medical Evacuation: The most essential insurance cover you need to have as a surfer. We can’t stress enough, how important this part is, if you are surfing in remote areas, with no big hospital nearby. This is not included in all travel insurances and often needs to be added as an add-on.
  • Personal Liability:  To cover accidents or damage caused by you. Many things can happen during a surf trip, you might end up in a car accident or drop in on someone during a surf session, resulting in someone else getting hurt.
  • Medical Evacuation

The most essential insurance cover you need to have as part of a surf travel insurance package is that of a Medical Evacuation. When the helicopters take you to a specific medical facility that can deal with whatever is needed.

Often the smaller hospitals can’t deal with massive trauma and particular injuries. An injury in the Mnetawais will mean that you need to get to Padang. If Padang can’t deal with it, then you will need to get to Singapore. This is what the Medical Evacuation procedure is all about. You would think that all travel insurance for surfers would have such cover, but not all of it does. Even if it does, there are usually several fine points that need to be examined and scrutinized to ensure you have what you need.

An example is a surfer injured at Grajagan (G-land) in Java who had the full insurance bouquet. Still, the medivac component had some exclusion. When the Helicopters were contacted in Bali, they had booked out expensive clients sightseeing over the Bukit. They were not obliged to deal with the injured surfer as his Medevac clause didn’t provide the necessary cover.

Another example is a surfer who went to Mauritius and didn’t bother with medical insurance because who needs medical insurance in a benign destination like Mauritius? A bite to eat at a food truck in the car park by One Eyes surf spot in Le Morne resulted in chronic food poisoning. He was hospitalized, and the bill was more than his 5-star luxury resort bill for him and his wife.

You need to be super-aware of your insurance covers, and you need to look out for the ‘extreme sports’ exclusions. Even when ‘extreme sports’ (Surfing) is included, there might be exceptions where your surf travel insurance will not have the right coverage. Some insurance companies don’t offer coverage to professional athletes and people traveling for competition. Other insurance makes it clear in their fine print that sports such as surfing needs to be performed under supervision or at a beach with observation and official guidelines. Travel insurance for surfers isn’t going to be worth much, if surfing is classified as an extreme sport and is not covered, or if the activity needs to be performed under some very strict rules.

The additional rule of thumb when it comes to surfing travel insurance is to get maximum coverage. If you’re going to get insurance, which you obviously should, you might as well get the best available.

Additional Insurance criteria’s

Surf travel insurance is not only about medical expenses, though. There are many other relevant avenues of insurance.

  • Trip cancellation : It might not be our fault, but a loved one or a travel partner might get sick or injured, bringing your trip to a grinding halt. This sort of cover is available.
  • Baggage protection : Have your luggage stolen while in Bali or the Philippines or Hawaii, and surf travel insurance has got you covered. This is over and above your medical insurance and the medivac insurance mentioned earlier.
  • Surfboard cover : This might be included in your pre-existing household insurance, but it might not. It is easy enough to add on some insurance for your boards, for breakage during your flights, and sometimes even for breakage while using them.
  • Theft : This might include the theft of passports, money, or valuables.

Medevac Evacuation plans

Surfboard cover

Remote destination cover

Snowboard cover

Moped and motorbike cover

  • Credit for unused travel insurance

It is a bit of a challenge to see precisely what their exclusions are and what they don’t cover, so this will need to be examined on the actual quote.

Seven Corners Insurance

Another well–known and popular brand, Seven Corners is also a reputable brand for travel insurance for surfers. While not as expressly surfer-friendly, their coverage is extensive and meticulous.

  • Cancellation cover
  • Baggage loss
  • Medical cover
  • Medical evacuation

Seven Corners Insurance does have certain destination restrictions, but not really for surf destinations.

Limitations and restrictions regarding surfing, needs to be examined in the actual quote.

G1G Insurance

This is a great and seemingly understanding surf travel insurance company with a few additions pleasing to the surfer’s ear. The fact that you can choose your extreme sports level and purchase the entire adventure travel plan online is a great start.

They cover all sports like ‘bungee jumping, surfing, scuba diving, skiing, zip-lining, and any other activities on the bucket list. They even cover the most extreme sports, like skydiving and black water rafting, but it needs to be included in your custom offer. One of G1G Insurance’s advantages is that you can talk to a consultant to make sure that the package you are on has everything needed for the adventure you are planning.

  • All types of extreme sport
  • Individual cover as well as for the entire family

Emergency medical evacuation

  • Trip protection is not included (needs to be purchased as an extension)
  • You get a customized offer for the extreme sport of choice (surfing). Other kinds of extreme sports may not be covered if you haven’t included them
  • The insurance packages are pretty specific, however. If you buy the snowboarding package, you are not necessarily covered for surfing. Check the list for the riskiest activity level of the two, and that will see you covered for both.

Safety Wing

This travel insurance company has several options that will appeal to the travelling surfer. Their leading offers are for Nomad Insurance and Remote Health Insurance. The biggest advantage of Safety Wing is the flexibility they offer for longer trips and the easy online process.

  • Travel delay or trip interruption

Lost baggage (flight)

Lost passport

Natural disasters

  • Political evacuation

The things that don’t cover are very interesting. You’re good as long as you’re not into sky surfing, snowboarding, or kite surfing,

Safety Wing Travel Insurance has a very long list of what is covered and what is not, and it is one of those situations where you need to check the specific terms in the quote you get.

For instance they will not cover any surfing activities related to competition. You are not covered either by the insurance terms if you surf at a beach without any official guidelines or observation.

Insurance providers that stands out

There are so many options for surf travel insurance that it is hard to find which company would offer the best surf travel insurance. The easiest route to choosing the best travel insurance for surfers would be to select the insurance company that seems to best understand the sport of surfing and the actual needs of a surfer.

Surfing is not an extreme sport for most of it, nor is it an endurance sport. There are no required safety equipment essentials that need to be worn. There are no other settings or skill sets that need to be ascertained beforehand. A good travel insurance company would do this research early. To be able to offer surfing travel insurance to surfers, a lucrative market.

Best option for surfing

Two companies stand out because they really seem to know what surfers need and thereby be able to provide the best-suited insurance plan.

These two brands are Insured Nomads and Surf Travel Insurance (AU & US). Both have a very clear and concise understanding of a surfer’s needs, as well as the nuances and idiosyncrasies of the travelling surfer, with boards, dangers, and most apparent medical needs covered.

Both of these companies, it seems, have surfers working for them, or they are consulting with surfers to ensure that they get the needs of the surfers spot-on.

Best option for any extreme sport

G1G Travel insurance is among our favorites since they have the least exceptions to their policies and are the only provider who can cover all kinds of extreme sports. However you need to know beforehand what activities you are planning on doing, so you get everything included in your custom offer.

We find the G1G Travel insurance most suitable for families since they can provide a package deal with coverage for the entire family.

Our favorite thing about G1G is the fact that you can talk to one of their consultants, who are highly qualified and will know what you need for your personal circumstances.

Best option for flexibility

Make it a top priority.

It pays to be indulgent and careful when it comes to surf travel insurance. Don’t skimp. The day that you scrimp on surf travel insurance will be the day that you need it!

While surf travel insurances can be a bit of a jungle to navigate, we hope this article gave you some clarity and knowledge about some of the best providers on the market when it comes to surf travel. Once you have decided on an insurance provider from the list, the next step is to get a quote from them and go through all the specifics, to make sure the terms and conditions suit your personal needs and circumstances. Once you have your surf travel insurance in place, all there is left is to relax and enjoy your vacation.

7 tips for kitesurfing travel..

Kitesurfing Travel

Traveling for kitesurfing is an exciting adventure that can take you to some of the most beautiful and unique locations worldwide. Planning a kitesurfing trip can be daunting whether you are a novice or an experienced kite surfer. Some tips can help make the process easier and more enjoyable. This blog post will discuss seven tips for successful  kitesurfing travel .

Invest in Good Quality Gear.

When planning your kitesurfing travel, it’s essential to make sure you have the right gear. Investing in good quality gear is critical to having a safe and enjoyable experience on the water. This includes kites, boards, foils, and lines. Twin tips and airlines are a must for beginners, and for those looking for extra performance, a foil can be a great option.

Your beach spot or ocean conditions will also affect what gear is best for you. Depending on your destination, you may need additional safety features such as a wetsuit or impact vest. Research the area before your trip and consult with a kitesurfing group or party for their advice on what gear you should bring. Having the right equipment is essential to making sure you have a successful kitesurfing trip.

Get Good Travel Insurance.

Kitesurfing is a great way to explore the world and enjoy an adrenaline-filled adventure. But before you head off on your next kitesurfing trip, you must ensure you’re covered with the right travel insurance.

Whether planning a week-long kitesurfing holiday or just a one-day surf party, you’ll want to ensure adequate coverage for medical emergencies, lost luggage, and other unexpected events. Travel insurance policies typically cover medical expenses, repatriation costs, trip cancellations, missed connections, and personal liability.

If you’re traveling to remote areas with limited access to healthcare facilities or planning extreme sports activities like kitesurfing, you’ll want to ensure your policy covers these activities. It’s essential to read the fine print and choose a policy that offers the correct coverage for your trip.

By investing in good quality travel insurance, you can rest assured that you’re protected in case of any unexpected events while kitesurfing. So remember to include travel insurance as part of your next kitesurfing adventure.

Choose the Right Destination.

When it comes to  kitesurfing travel , one of the most important things is to choose the right destination. You want to pick a place that offers the perfect conditions for kitesurfing, such as steady winds, flat water, and plenty of room to practice your skills. You also want to find a spot with plenty of activities outside of kitesurfing. Look for places with great nightlife and fun outdoor activities like beach parties.

Take the time to research different kitesurfing spots and read up on reviews from past travelers. Ask friends and family who have already gone kitesurfing where they went and what they enjoyed about the destination. Consider the cost of travel to and from the goal and the price of accommodations in the area. This can help you determine if the destination fits within your budget.

Doing your research ahead of time will ensure that you have the best  kitesurfing travel  experience possible. Make sure you choose the correct destination for your next kitesurfing vacation!

Check the Weather Conditions.

One of the most critical aspects of planning a successful  kitesurfing travel  experience is checking the weather conditions in advance. Knowing what to expect during your trip will allow you to decide when and where to go kitesurfing. If you’re planning on hosting a kitesurfing party, it’s essential to check the forecast to ensure that there will be enough wind to get everyone out on the water. Check the local forecasts and those of neighboring regions to ensure you’re choosing the best spot. Consider checking wind and wave forecasts a few days in advance so you can adjust your plan if necessary.

Learn Some Local Language.

Learning a few key phrases in the local language of your kitesurfing destination can go a long way. Not only will it help you communicate better with locals and get around the area more quickly, but it also shows respect for their culture. Even if you don’t become fluent, you can still pick up enough words to order food and drinks, ask for directions, or converse. Plus, it’s a great way to learn something new and have fun. If you have time before your trip, consider taking language classes to prepare yourself. If not, many online resources, such as Duolingo, can help you learn quickly and easily.

Respect the Local Culture.

When traveling to a new destination, one of the most important things you should remember is to respect the local culture. Respectful behavior and an appreciation for the locals’ customs, beliefs, and ways of life will make your trip more enjoyable. Here are a few tips on how to show respect for the local culture:

• Educate yourself about the local culture before you go. Read up on the history and customs of the area you visit and learn some key phrases in the local language.

• Be mindful of your behavior and dress appropriately. Some cultures have different customs regarding dress, behavior, and gestures than you may be used to.

• Show respect for the local wildlife and environment. Respect their habitats and do not take anything from nature unless necessary.

• If you plan to visit religious sites, dress respectfully and avoid loud conversations and disruptive behaviors.

• Respect local customs when taking photographs. Ask permission before photographing or filming anyone, and do not take pictures of restricted areas.

• Be mindful of where you eat and drink. Be aware of any cultural or religious restrictions on certain types of food or alcohol, and if in doubt, ask someone knowledgeable in the area for advice.

Following these tips will ensure that your kitesurfing trip is a respectful and positive experience for yourself and the local people you encounter.

Have Fun and Be Safe.

Kitesurfing is a thrilling sport that can be enjoyed worldwide. However, it is essential to remember to have fun while staying safe.

One of the most important safety precautions when kitesurfing is to make sure you know your limitations. Only try tricks or jumps once you are experienced enough to do so safely. Ensure you always stay within your skill level and never attempt something that could potentially put you at risk.

It is also essential to ensure you are aware of your environment when kitesurfing. Before beginning, check the area for potential hazards, such as rocks or shallow waters. Wear a life jacket and ensure you follow all local regulations and laws.

Finally, kitesurfing should be enjoyed in a way that respects nature—practice responsible behaviors that protect the environment, such as avoiding plastics and littering. Additionally, respecting other kitesurfers and giving them plenty of space to avoid collisions is essential.

Kitesurfing is an incredible way to explore the world and have some fun. If you practice safety, respect the environment, and stay within your skill level, you can have an unforgettable time kitesurfing while also staying safe.

Travel Insured

How much does the cheapest travel insurance cost?

The cheapest travel insurance in our rating is $334. This is for a WorldTrips Atlas Journey Preferred travel insurance plan, based on the average of seven quotes for travelers of various ages to international destinations with a range of trip values.

Factors that determine travel insurance cost

There are several factors that determine the cost of travel insurance, including:

  • Age and number of travelers being insured.
  • Trip length.
  • Total trip cost.
  • The travel insurance plan you choose.
  • The travel insurance company.
  • Any add-ons, features or upgraded benefits you include in the travel insurance plan.
Expert tip: “In general, travelers can expect to pay anywhere from 4% to 10% of their total prepaid, non-refundable trip costs,” said Suzanne Morrow, CEO of InsureMyTrip.

Is buying the cheapest travel insurance a good idea?

Choosing cheaper travel insurance without paying attention to what a plan covers and excludes could leave you underinsured for your trip. Comparing travel insurance plans side-by-side can help ensure you get enough coverage to protect yourself financially in an emergency for the best price.

For example, compare these two Travelex travel insurance plans:

  • Travel Basic is cheaper but it only provides up to $15,000 for emergency medical expense coverage. You’ll also have to pay extra for coverage for children.
  • Travel Select will cost you a bit more but it covers up to $50,000 in medical expenses and includes coverage for kids aged 17 and younger traveling with you. It also offers upgrades such additional medical coverage, “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage and an adventure sports rider that may be a good fit for your trip.

Reasons to consider paying more for travel insurance

Make sure you understand what you’re giving up if you buy the cheapest travel insurance. Here are a few reasons you may consider paying a little extra for better coverage.

  • Emergency medical. The best travel medical insurance offers primary coverage for emergency medical benefits. Travel insurance with primary coverage can cost more than secondary coverage but will save you from having to file a claim with your health insurance company before filing a travel insurance claim.
  • Emergency evacuation. If you’re traveling to a remote location or planning a boat excursion on your trip, look at travel insurance with a high medical evacuation insurance limit. If you are injured while traveling, transportation to the nearest adequate medical facility could cost in the tens to hundreds of thousands. It may make sense to pay more for travel insurance with robust emergency evacuation coverage.
  • Flexibility. To maximize your trip flexibility, you might consider upgrading your travel insurance to “ cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage . This will increase the cost of your travel insurance but allow you to cancel your trip for any reason — not just those listed in your policy. The catch is that you’ll need to cancel at least 48 hours before your trip and will only be reimbursed 50% or 75% of your trip expenses, depending on the plan.
  • Upgrades. Many travel insurance plans have optional extras like car rental collision and adventure sports (which may otherwise be excluded from coverage). These will cost you extra but may give you the coverage you need.

How to find the cheapest travel insurance

The best way to find the cheapest travel insurance is to determine what you’re looking for in a travel insurance policy and compare plans that meet your needs.

“Travel insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every trip is different, and every traveler has different needs, wants and concerns. This is why comparison is key,” said Morrow.

Consider the following factors when comparing cheap travel insurance plans.

  • How often you’re traveling. A single-trip policy may be the most cost-effective if you’re only going on a single trip this year. But a multi-trip travel insurance plan may be cheaper if you’re going on multiple international trips throughout the year. Annual travel insurance policies cover you for a whole year as long as each trip doesn’t exceed a certain number of days, usually 30 to 90 days.
  • Credit card has travel insurance benefits. The best credit cards offer perks and benefits, and many offer travel insurance-specific benefits. The coverage types and benefit limits can vary, and you must put the entire trip cost on the credit card to use the coverage. If your trip costs more than the coverage limit on your card, you can supplement the rest with a cheaper travel insurance plan.
  • The coverage you need. When looking for the best travel insurance option at the most affordable price, only buy extras and upgrades you really need. A basic plan may only provide up to $500 in baggage insurance, but if you only plan to take $300 worth of clothes and accessories, you don’t need to pay more for higher coverage limits.

Is cheap travel insurance worth it?

Cheap travel insurance can be worth it, as long as you understand the plan limitations and exclusions. Taking the time to read your policy, especially the fine print, well before your trip can ensure there won’t be any surprises about what’s covered once your journey begins.

“If a traveler is looking for coverage for travel delays, cancellations, interruptions, medical and baggage — a comprehensive travel insurance policy will provide the most bang for their buck,” said Morrow. But if you’re on a tight budget and are only worried about emergency medical care and evacuation coverage while traveling abroad, stand-alone options are cheaper.

Before buying travel insurance, you should also consider what your health insurance will cover.

“Most domestic health insurance plans, including Medicare, will not cover medical bills abroad,” said Morrow. Even if you’re staying stateside, you may find value in an affordable travel insurance plan with medical coverage if you have a high-deductible health plan (HDHP).

A cheap travel insurance plan is better than none at all if you end up in a situation that would have covered some or all of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses.

Methodology

Our insurance experts reviewed 1,855 coverage details and 567 rates to determine the best travel insurance . From those top-scoring travel insurance plans, we chose the most affordable for our rating of the cheapest travel insurance.

Insurers could score up to 100 points based on the following factors:

  • Cost: 40 points. We scored the average cost of each travel insurance policy for a variety of trips and traveler profiles.
  • Medical expenses: 10 points. We scored travel medical insurance by the coverage amount available. Travel insurance policies with emergency medical expense benefits of $250,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Medical evacuation: 10 points. We scored each plan’s emergency medical evacuation coverage by coverage amount. Travel insurance policies with medical evacuation expense benefits of $500,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver: 10 points. We gave full points to travel insurance policies that cover pre-existing medical conditions if certain conditions are met.
  • Missed connection: 10 points. Travel insurance plans with missed connection benefits of $1,000 per person or more received full points.
  • “Cancel for any reason” upgrade: 5 points. We gave points to travel insurance plans with optional “cancel for any reason” coverage that reimburses up to 75%.
  • Travel delay required waiting time: 5 points. We gave 5 points to travel insurance policies with travel delay benefits that kick in after a delay of 6 hours or less.
  • Cancel for work reasons: 5 points. If a travel insurance plan allows you to cancel your trip for work reasons, such as your boss requiring you to stay and work, we gave it 5 points.
  • Hurricane and severe weather: 5 points. Travel insurance plans that have a required waiting period for hurricane and weather coverage of 12 hours or less received 5 points.

Some travel insurance companies may offer plans with additional benefits or lower prices than the plans that scored the highest, so make sure to compare travel insurance quotes to see your full range of options.

Cheapest travel insurance FAQs

When buying travel insurance, cheapest is not always the best. The most affordable travel insurance plans typically offer fewer coverages with lower policy limits and few or no optional upgrades. Add up your total nonrefundable trip costs and compare travel insurance plans and available features that cover your travel expenses. This strategy can help you find the cheapest travel insurance policy that best protects you from financial loss if an unforeseen circumstance arises.

Get the coverage you need: Best travel insurance of 2024

According to our analysis, WorldTrips , Travel Insured International and Travelex offer the best cheap travel insurance. Policy coverage types and limits can vary by each travel insurance provider, so the best way to get the cheapest travel insurance plan is to compare several policies and companies to find the right fit for your budget.

A good rate for travel insurance depends on your budget and coverage needs. The most comprehensive travel insurance plan is usually not the cheapest. But cheap trip insurance may not have enough coverage or the types of coverage you want. Comparing different levels of coverage and how much they cost can help you find the best cheap insurance for travel.

The average cost of travel insurance is between 5% to 6% of your total travel expenses for one trip, according to our analysis of rates. However, you may find cheaper travel insurance if you opt for a plan with fewer benefits or lower coverage limits. How much you pay for travel insurance will also depend on the number of travelers covered, their ages, the length of the trip and any upgrades you add to your plan.

Travel insurance covers nonrefundable, prepaid trip costs — up to the policy coverage limits — when your trip is interrupted or canceled for a covered reason outlined in your plan documents. Even the cheapest travel insurance policies usually provide coverage for:

  • Medical emergencies.
  • Trip delays.
  • Trip interruption.
  • Trip cancellation.
  • Lost, stolen or damaged luggage.

However, if you’re looking to save on travel insurance, you can shop for a policy that only has travel medical insurance and does not include benefits for trip cancellation .

Even when you buy cheap travel insurance, you can often use upgrade options to customize your policy to meet your specific needs.

Some common travel insurance add-ons you may want to consider include:

  • Rental car damage coverage.
  • Medical bundle.
  • Security bundle.
  • Accidental death and dismemberment coverage.
  • Adventure sports bundle.
  • Pet bundle.
  • Wedding bundle.
  • “Cancel for work reasons” coverage.
  • “Interruption for any reason” (IFAR) coverage.
  • “Cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage .

Our Pick Of The Best Boat Insurance For Australians

Published: Apr 18, 2024, 8:17pm

It may not come as a surprise that Australians love taking boats out on the water as 87% of the population live within 50km of the coast. Data from the Boating Industry Association for 2022/23 shows that 2.5 million Australians have a boat licence—that’s almost 10% of the population.

As a boat is a considerable investment, it’s a good idea to protect it as you would your car. Boat insurance can offer similar benefits to car insurance , such as cover for damage to the boat itself and its contents, and legal liability, if you damage someone else’s property, or someone is injured or dies as a result of an accident you’ve caused.

However, it additionally offers more boat-specific cover, paying out for environmental damage caused by an oil, fuel or waste leakage, for example. Many policies also offer cover for sailboat racing and waterskiing, typically as an optional extra and for an additional premium.

As all policies differ in their features, it’s essential to compare them to find what you need for a suitable price. You should first decide, if you need third-party only; third party, fire and theft; or comprehensive cover which protects against the widest range of eventualities. We’ve conducted extensive research into the latter, to find what we consider to be the best comprehensive policies. All policies include cover for loss or damage to your boat as a result of storms, floods, fire and theft. You can find out how we scored them in the methodology section further down this page.

Note: the below list represents a selection of our top category picks, as chosen by Forbes Advisor Australia’s editors and journalists. Nautilus Marine Boat Insurance

Agreed or market value

  • Choice of repairer

Liability cover

Limit not readily disclosed

This offering is the most comprehensive we found, covering your boat up to 250 nautical miles from the Australian coastline. Unlike most boat insurance policies, there’s the option to have your boat insured at market or agreed value.

There’s $5,000 each for emergency expenses and funeral costs, $20,000 for personal effects, $500,000 for marine damage, and $50,000 for related fines and penalties. This policy also allows you, rather than the insurer, to choose a repairer for your boat if damaged. Additionally, you have a choice of how much you pay in excess on accepted claims, which can lower or raise the policy premium, to a more favourable level. This policy is also a rare one in that it automatically covers sailboat racing, limiting the distance to up to 100 nautical miles. Additional cover can be purchased for longer races. Note that while this policy offers legal liability cover, the limit is not disclosed.

Aside from comprehensive cover, this insurer also offers third party only, extended blue water yacht racing and blue water cruising policies.

  • Lay-up discount available
  • 21-day cooling off period
  • Insures at market value or agreed value
  • No rescue cover
  • No salvage cover
  • Cover for ‘reasonable’ repairs at market value only

GIO Boat Insurance

$10 million

As is common with boat insurance, this policy covers you up to 200 nautical miles off Australia’s shores. However, it offers up to $10 million in salvage and removal cover, which is relatively high compared to policies provided by other insurers.

It also includes $250,000 to cover the cost of removing or containing damage caused by pollution from your boat and related legal costs, if your boat is stranded or damaged. There’s $5,000 each for emergency repair, the boat’s contents and fatal injury. Unlike certain policies, this one also covers rescue, paying out up to $5,000. However, one drawback is that your boat can only be insured at agreed value. A lay-up discount and cover for sailboat racing and watersports are optional extras that can be added.

If you make a successful claim, the policy allows you to choose the repairer. You can also pay an excess amount that you choose on taking out the policy. Paying a low amount in excess typically raises the policy premium and vice versa.

This insurer also offers third-party boat insurance as an alternative to comprehensive cover.

  • $10 million legal liability
  • Rescue cover included
  • Insures at agreed value only

RACV Boat Insurance

This policy pays out up to $5,000 for emergency expenses, and covers damage up to the agreed value, as long as your boat stays within 200 nautical miles of Australia’s coastline.

It also covers rescue up to $5,000 and salvage costs, as long as they are ‘reasonable’, while $250,000 is available for clean-up expenses to remove, contain or clear debris and liquid from your boat as a result of an insured event. For funeral expenses, there’s $10,000, while $10 million is provided in legal liability cover. However, content cover is only available to bolt on to the policy as an optional extra. Insurance for sailboat racing and watersports are also available as add-ons, for an extra premium.

Unlike certain policies, you can choose a repairer, which is an added bonus. You also have a choice of how much excess you pay on each accepted claim. Note that this comprehensive offering is the only type of boat cover this insurer offers.

  • $250,000 clean-up costs
  • Covers ‘reasonable’ salvage costs only
  • Contents cover not automatically included

Suncorp Boat Insurance

Suncorp’s comprehensive boat insurance offers a suite of attractive features: there’s $10 million in salvage and removal cover; an equal amount in legal liability cover; $250,000 for pollution by oil, fuel or waste; and $5,000 each for emergency expenses, the boat’s contents, and for fatal injury.

The policy will remain valid up to 200 nautical miles from Australia’s shores, covering your boat at agreed value only and paying out up to this value for rescue. Note that if the boat is damaged, only the insurer can choose a repairer. However, you will have a choice of how much excess you pay on accepted claims, when you first take out the policy. Paying more in excess can lower your policy premium and vice versa.

Cover for sailboat racing and water-skiing can be added on to the policy at an extra cost. This insurer offers third party cover, as an alternative to comprehensive cover.

  • No choice of repairer

NRMA Boat Insurance

This policy will cover your boat up to 200 nautical miles from Australia’s coastline, covering ‘reasonable’ repair costs up to an agreed value only. However, it allows you to choose a repairer, if you wish, and offers several excess options to choose from when taking out the policy. Opting to pay a higher excess on accepted claims can lower the policy premium and vice versa.

The policy also includes salvage cover, though no specific limit is readily provided, and $10 million in legal liability cover, including $250,000 for clean-up costs. It also offers $10,000 for funeral costs, up to $800 for emergency repairs and an additional $1,000 to cover emergency transport and accomodation. There’s $1,000 to cover the boat’s contents, which is relatively low compared to other insurers, but there is the option to increase this amount to $1,500 by paying an additional premium.

This policy does not cover rescue, but insurance for sailboat racing and water-skiing are available at an additional cost. This insurer also provides third party insurance as an alternative to its comprehensive offering.

  • 21-day cooling period
  • $800 only for emergency repairs

Apia Boat Insurance

In addition to $5,000 in cover for rescue, Apia’s comprehensive boat insurance includes $10 million each for salvage and legal liability. It also offers $250,000 for clean up and $5,000 for emergency expenses.

For fatal injury, there’s $5,000, while up to $250 is provided for the boat’s contents and $250 for personal effects. Cover for sailboats and watersports come as optional extras, at an additional cost. Cover remains valid up to 200 miles from the Australian mainland and Tasmanian coastlines.

The policy offers several excess amounts to choose from, allowing you the ability to lower your policy premium, if you prefer to pay more in excess, and vice versa. Note that the insurer will choose a repairer for you on this policy. As an alternative to comprehensive cover, it also offers third party insurance.

  • $10 million salvage
  • Insured at agreed value only
  • No lay-up discount

Youi Comprehensive Boat Insurance

Youi Comprehensive Boat Insurance covers you up to 200 nautical miles from the Australian and Tasmanian coastlines, providing $1,000 for emergency repairs, transport and accomodation. However, it insures at market value only and you can’t choose the repairer if you’re boat is damaged.

There’s $1,000 for the boat’s contents, $10 million for legal liability and $5,000 for accidental personal injury. The latter rises to $10,000, including for funeral expenses, if injury leads to death. The policy also includes $150,000 for salvage costs and $250,000 in pollution cover. Note that the policy does not include cover for rescue, and offers a 20-day cooling off period, which is slightly shorter than the 21-day period offered by many insurers. Social sailboat racing cover is available as an optional extra for an additional premium, but water-skiing cover is not provided.

As well as comprehensive cover, Youi offers a third party property only policy, and third party fire and theft insurance. It also provides a choice of excess amounts, allowing you to raise how much is levied in exchange for a lower policy premium, or vice versa.

  • $10 million legal liability cover
  • Insurer offers good range of policy types
  • $10,000 accidental injury cover
  • Market value only
  • Water-skiing cover not available

Club Marine Boat Insurance

While pleasure boat insurance is Club Marine’s most comprehensive offering, it also provides third party cover. The former, which we analysed, can cover your boat at market or agreed value, up to 250 nautical miles from Australia, protecting it against damage costs up to the policy limit. You, rather than the insurer, can choose a repairer when needed.

The policy also includes $10,000 for personal effects, $500,000 to cover clean up costs, and covers ‘reasonable’ costs for salvage. Insurance for water-skiing and sailboat racing can be bolted on to the policy at an additional cost. You can also add cover for emergency measures if you choose, but such scenarios are only covered up to a ‘reasonable’ amount. There is no automatic or optional cover for rescue.

You can choose from a number of excess options when taking out the policy, which allows you to raise the excess to lower the policy premium or vice versa, depending on your preference.

  • 14-day cooling period
  • Lay-up discount optional

To find our pick of the best comprehensive caravan insurers in Australia, Forbes Advisor analysed 14 of the most popular companies in the country.

Our analysis included comparing how a boat is insured (whether by market value or agreed value); policy benefits, such as cover for emergency expenses and accidental damage; and an in-depth review of each provider’s product disclosure statement (PDS) to evaluate any exclusions and extras.

The policies were compared across the following 16 key data points:

Market versus agreed value: Can owners choose how their boat is insured? Choice of repairer: Can boat owners choose the repairer? Choice of excess: Do boat owners have a choice of how much excess they pay? Note that paying a high amount in excess usually lowers the policy premium, and vice versa. Cooling-off period: What is the cooling off period for purchase? Emergency expenses: Are boat owners covered for emergency expenses and by up to how much? Above $1,000 is great. Fire and theft: Does the policy include fire and theft cover? Legal liability: As boating and its equipment is expensive, is there at least $10 million for damage a boat owner may accidentally cause with their boat? Contents cover: Are the contents of the boat covered by more than $4,000? Natural disasters: Is there cover for floods and storms? Funeral services: Is there at least $10,000 or more for funeral expenses? Salvage costs: Is there at least $10 million for salvage operations? Clean-up costs: is there at least $250,000 for clean-up costs? Rescue services: Is there at least $5,000 for rescue services? Water-skiing: Is there cover for water-skiing automatically or as a policy add-on? Sailboat racing: Is there cover for sailboat racing automatically or is there an add-on? Discounts for ‘lay-up’: Does the insurer offer lay-up cover to allow owners to save on their premium when the boat is stored?

These variables were compared to complete an overall ranking of each comprehensive boat insurance provider. Each provider was ranked between one and five, with the leading providers (being those ranked higher than 3.5) included in the above best-of list.

A Note on Star Rankings

You will note that we have included a star rating next to each product or provider. This rating was determined by the editorial team once all of the data points above were considered, and the pros and cons of each product attribute was reviewed. The star rating is solely the view of Forbes Advisor editorial staff. Commercial partners or advertisers have no bearing on the star rating or their inclusion on this list. Star ratings are only one factor to be considered, and Forbes Advisor encourages you to seek independent advice from an authorised financial adviser in relation to your own financial circumstances and investments before you decide to choose a particular financial product or service.

As the name suggests, cover for boats can protect you when using a vessel such as a motorboat, yacht, small craft or super yacht. An insurer will be able to tell you what type of vessels it specifically covers. Similar to car insurance, the following types of boat cover are available:

Third party only: Protects against claims of injury or death, or damage to property by passengers or other third parties. Third party, fire and theft: Covers everything a third party only policy does, as well as someone stealing your boat and damage caused by fire. Comprehensive: Covers the widest range of unexpected emergencies, including those caused by theft, accidents and natural disasters.

The benefits of boat insurance can differ between policies. However, you’ll find that most comprehensive policies tend to include cover for the following:

Accidental loss and damage: This can include cover for theft, impact, sinking, fire, a storm, malicious damage and transit damage, when your boat is being transported on its own trailer

Emergency expenses: Covers the cost of emergency assistance such as the towing of your boat to the nearest safe place, or for the delivery of fuel, if your boat is stranded due to an emergency or unforeseen incident. It can also cover urgent repairs.

Personal effects/contents: Insures you for theft, loss or damage of belongings owned by you and depending on the insurer, your passengers, which are being used or stored on your boat at the time of an incident. This can include clothing, fishing and diving equipment and unfixed furniture. There are typically exclusions to this cover such as jewellery, money and mobile phones. Sub-limits on cover may also apply to certain items. Clean-up: Covers the cost to remove, contain or clear waste and pollution caused by your boat. Salvage and removal: Covers the cost of recovering your boat and moving it to a safe place in the event your boat is stranded or damaged in a covered incident. Legal liability: Covers you for injury to other people or damage to someone’s property when using your boat. Funeral expenses: Pays out following the accidental death of an insured person on the policy while boating.

A policy may also include cover for rescuing from a stranded boat, while insurance for sailboat racing and waterskiing may each come as optional extras that you can bolt on to your policy at an additional cost.

In addition to the types of cover included on a policy, you’ll also want to find out how far you can take your boat from land. Typically, you can travel 200 nautical miles away from Australia’s coastline without invalidating your policy. Certain insurers may allow you to travel farther out. You may also want to check if you can choose the repairer if you claim for damage, or if the insurer must choose.

Certain policies may offer a lay-up discount, often as an optional extra. This is when you can nominate certain months in the year that you don’t use your boat, and the insurer will charge you less for your policy during these times. This discount is worth considering, in addition to the policy premium (the cost of the policy). You’ll also want to weigh these factors up against the excess you’re typically required to pay on each accepted claim. This sum is usually automatically deducted from the claim amount. On taking out your policy you may have the option to choose an excess amount. While lowering it can usually raise your policy premium, paying more in excess could lower your policy premium to an amount that you may prefer.

Most insurers offer either agreed value or market value policies. However, some insurers may offer the option to insure at agreed value or market value, depending on your preference, although this is rare.

On an agreed value policy, the value is determined through a boat valuation you arrange before the policy starts. This must usually be carried out by a registered boat dealer or broker who specialises in your type of boat.

On a market value policy, the value of your boat will be determined at the time of claiming, typically using dealer or repairer valuations or industry publications.

You’ll want to read a policy’s PDS thoroughly before deciding whether it’s worth purchasing. This should be available to view on the insurer’s website. It will detail what the cover includes and excludes, as this differs between policies.

Insurers usually offer a 21-day cooling-off period during which you can cancel your policy and get a refund, should you change your mind and haven’t yet made a claim.

Certain policies may come with a shorter cooling off period of 20, or even 14 days. As with all the details of your policy, you can check how long this period will last in its PDS.

A quick way to compare boat insurance policies is to run quotes on the websites of individual insurers. Shopping around will raise your chances of finding a suitable policy, at the best price available.

As well as the cost of a policy, you will be able to compare factors, such as the types of cover included, cover levels and the amount of excess levied on each successful claim you make.

First, you’ll need to enter a few details into the insurer’s online quotation tool to give it an idea of the type of boat that needs covering, how you use it, its speed and engine type, where you store it when not using it and more. An insurer will also want to know information about you, such as your age, and boating experience.

How much boat insurance do I need?

The amount of cover you will need will depend on factors such as the value of your boat and the contents inside, whether it will be insured at agreed or market value.

You’ll want to carefully look through a policy’s PDS to find out exactly what it does and does not cover. You may want to consider a different policy if it automatically includes cover you don’t need such as water skiing insurance.

What is the best boat insurance policy?

Our above ranking of what we consider to be the best comprehensive boat insurance policies gives you an idea of how they compare based on what we’ve identified as key factors.

In addition to the levels of cover available, we considered whether owners can choose the repairer that fixes their boat, whether they have a choice of what they pay in excess, how long of a cooling off period is provided, should they wish to cancel their policy and get a refund and more.

However, the best boat insurance for you will ultimately come down to your personal preferences, budget and needs.

How much is boat insurance in Australia?

According to the Pacific Boating club, insuring your vessel can cost upwards of $300 per year.

The specific price will be based on factors such as the size and make of your boat, as well as the type of policy you choose.
