Shopping and Food

The official U.S. currency is the United States dollar (symbol: $). ATM's everywhere.

Major credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are widely used and accepted, even for transactions worth only a few dollars. In fact, in some cases, it may be the only way to make a transaction. Note to overseas visitors: Prices of goods and services always seem lower than they really are, as taxes and gratuities are seldom included.

Note to overseas visitors: Prices of goods and services always seem lower than they really are, as taxes and gratuities are seldom included.

Most states have a sales tax, ranging from 2.9% to nearly 10% of the retail price; 4-6% is typical. Sales tax is almost never included in posted prices (except for gasoline, and in most states, alcoholic beverages consumed on-premises), but instead will be calculated and added to the total when you pay.

Tipping in America is widely used and expected. While Americans themselves often debate correct levels and exactly who deserves to be tipped, generally accepted standard rates are:

  • Full-service restaurants: 15-20% (Often this is the only income of the wait(ress). Tips are either left in cash or you can add it to the credit card slip) Note: Few restaurants add an automatic service charge, in which case it is up to you how much you tip extra. Check your bill!
  • Taxi drivers, hairdressers, other personal services: 10-15%
  • Bartenders: $1 per drink if inexpensive or 15% of total
  • Bellhops: $1-2 per bag ($3-5 minimum regardless)
  • Hotel doorman: $1 per bag (if they assist), $1 for calling a cab
  • Tour guides: Depending on tour length, size, and overall quality of guided tours; for half day tours or less $5-10 per person, for longer tours $10-20 per person.
  • Private car & limousine drivers: 15-20%
  • Housekeeping in hotels: $1-2 per day for long stays or $5 minimum for very short stays (optional)
  • Food delivery (pizza, etc.): $2-5, possibly more for very large orders

Communication:

Free wireless Internet is available at the Town Pier and Village Green.

The U.S. has no official language at the federal level, but English is by far the standard for everyday use. Several states have declared their official state language as English. Spanish is also official in the state of New Mexico, where it is widely spoken; French is official in Louisiana and the Hawaiian language is official in Hawaii, but neither approaches the use of English and are official for primarily historical reasons.

Opening Hours and Holidays:

In major metropolitan areas like New York and Los Angeles, many drugstores and supermarkets are routinely open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, while department stores, shopping centers and most other large retailers are typically open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and often with shorter hours on Sundays - generally 11 a.m. or noon to 5 or 6 p.m. On holidays, the tendency is to remain open (with the exception of the most important holidays like Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day where stores are generally closed)

The 930-passenger (double occupancy) Viking Sky – which debuted in February 2017 – receives rave reviews from past cruisers for its port-heavy itineraries (fares include one complimentary excursion per port) and luxurious, comfortable staterooms. Viking Sky sails to the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Central America, the South Pacific and Australia. The ship also offers world voyages.

Debuted in May 2023, Oceania Cruises' first new ship in more than a decade holds 1,200 passengers (at double occupancy) and 800 crew members. Vista is the inaugural ship in Oceania's Allura Class, featuring top-of-the-line amenities like a culinary center, an artist loft and an extensive library, along with facilities like a pool, a casino, a spa and a fitness center. Additionally, Vista offers enrichment opportunities like destination-focused seminars led by guest speakers and dynamic musical performances.

One of the highlights of Oceania Vista is its wide array of dining venues, from specialty restaurants like Ember (American fare) and Toscana (Italian cuisine) to the poolside Waves Grill and daily afternoon tea service. In the evening, guests can grab a drink at their choice of several bars and lounges; Vista's immersive mixology program utilizes innovative techniques and trends to create an elevated cocktail experience.

Vista's well-appointed staterooms – which range from 240 to 2,400 square feet – boast balconies, queen-size beds, rainforest showers, flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service, among other amenities. As part of Oceania's fleetwide revamp, Regatta was completely redesigned in September 2019. Passengers in Veranda Staterooms and Suites will enjoy verandas and spaces ranging from 216 to 1,000 square feet, while Inside and Ocean View cabins are smaller. The ship also offers solo staterooms for those who are traveling alone. All staterooms are equipped with minibars, flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service, plus all-new furnishings and marble bathrooms.

Halifax cruise terminal

Port Halifax has 2 dedicated cruise terminals. Both are part of the Cruise Pavilion Complex, and named "Pavilion 22" and "Pavilion 20". Their principal berths are, respectively, Pier 22 and Pier 20. Unlike many other tours, your guide is far from stuffy; they’ll provide witty commentary and interesting stories with a humorous twist while still maintaining the high energy of the thrill ride.

Tours include a safety briefing and instructions on driving the speed boat, as well as a life jacket. Keep a lookout for local wildlife like sea lions and pelicans which frequently make their homes along the shore.

Harbor Cruise in San Diego Bay

Tips for Planning & Preparing Before Your San Diego Bay and Harbor Cruise

Ensure your cruise goes off without a hitch with these helpful tips and important things to know before you book an excursion.

Watch the Weather

Be sure to check the weather leading up to your trip, and keep an eye out for updates from the tour company. While some ships have covers to block out a drizzle and can thus operate rain or shine, others may only run when the weather is nice.

While San Diego enjoys warm weather year-round , there are always a few rainy days, so check each cruise for information about their rescheduling or refunding policies in the case of inclement weather.

Check the Suggested Dress Code

Some, but not all, harbor cruises have a suggested dress code for guests. While these dress codes typically aren’t strict, you’ll want to check them before you arrive so you aren’t too over- or underdressed for your cruise.

Remember that the bay can be fairly cool even on sunny days since there are no buildings to block the wind, so you’ll want to dress in layers with a warm overcoat or jacket.

Watch Out for Limited Wheelchair Accessibility

Some harbor cruises exclusively offer seating on the main deck of the ship, which may only be accessible by staircase or ladder. Other tours have dedicated seats that are accessible for anyone using a mobility device.

Be sure to double check with the tour company prior to booking your ticket if you need accessible accommodations.

Popular Activities

8 Scenic New England Cruise Ports to Visit This Summer

This site contains affiliate links for which we may be compensated.

While a Canada and New England cruise has many exciting and diverse cruise ports to entice discerning cruisers, these are among my favorite  New England cruise ports. They all offer incredible food, plenty of natural attractions, charming downtowns and worthwhile outdoor activities.

Read on to learn which of these New England ports should be on your must-visit list.

Downtown Bar Harbor, Maine.

8 Scenic New England Cruise Ports

It was not easy to narrow down to just eight of these unique ports. Since many cruises to Canada and New England depart from New York I didn’t include the Big Apple. However, there are just as many cruises that depart from Boston or visit Boston, so I’ve included it in the list.

When Do Cruise Lines Visit New England?

With a shorter cruise season – typically from April to October – cruise lines pack a full itinerary to visit as many New England cruise ports as possible on a single cruise.

You can visit cities steeped in U.S. history, explore national parks , bike along rugged coastlines and relax at quaint cafés. If brushing up on history and indulging in a freshly baked pie piques your interest, then New England cruise ports should be on your travel list.

Read on to discover my pick of not-to-be-missed New England cruise ports.

Explore Bar Harbor, Maine

Bar Harbor candy shop.

Bar Harbor is one of the few New England cruise ports that requires all cruise ships to anchor offshore. Popular cruise lines, including Holland America Line and Regent Seven Seas, deploy tenders (lifeboats) to ferry guests between the cruise ship and the harbor.

Located on Mount Desert Island, Bar Harbor was once the summer refuge of the rich and famous. Today, Bar Harbor attracts visitors with its spectacular mountains, lakes, cliffs and beaches. It’s a totally walkable town, if that’s what you prefer to do.

During your visit, try an excursion into Acadia National Park and head to Cadillac Mountain. Or spend time in downtown Bar Harbor for shopping and a bite to eat before heading back to meet the tender to your ship.

Newport, Rhode Island

Newport, Rhode Island harbor view with sailing ship.

Many smaller cruise ships include Newport on their New England itineraries. Almost everyone has heard of Newport, once nicknamed the “American Versailles” with the glamorous mansions of the Vanderbilts, the Astors and the Morgans that line Bellevue Avenue.

Newport, Rhode Island mansion.

Visitors still marvel at the opulence and splendor of a bygone era. Your cruise ship may offer the option to purchase mansion tour tickets onboard.

While you’ll likely want to tour at least one of the storied mansions, other activities could include exploring Rose Island Lighthouse and strolling along the Cliff Walk. This dramatic promenade extends for 3.5 miles and bisects the backyards of the mansions on Bellevue Avenue and the rocky Atlantic coastline.

Walk Through History in Boston, Massachusetts

Outside view of Quincy Market in Boston.

For history lovers, Boston is a treasure trove filled with storied landmarks, an immense library, public park and a heritage that extends back hundreds of years. Today, cruise lines such as Holland America , Princess Cruises and Cunard Line offer itineraries to Beantown. Cruise visitors can step back in time as they walk the city’s cobbled streets and gaslight districts.

Walk or hop on a trolley to explore Boston’s famous Freedom Trail. Then head to Little Italy for delicious homemade cannoli and coffee.

Many cruise lines offer shore excursion outside of Boston, too. Visit Salem, home of the 1692 witch trials and the Salem Witch Museum. Try a walk through the ivy-covered grounds of Harvard University in nearby Cambridge.

Portland, Maine

Nestled in Casco Bay, Portland, Maine is a popular cruise port stop in New England. Some of the cruise lines that visit Portland include American Cruise Lines, Celebrity, Holland America, MSC, Norwegian, Oceania, Princess and more.

Lobster salad with chips and a beer.

The birthplace of America poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Portland prides itself on its beautiful Victorian brick homes, storefronts and museums. Downtown Portland, located just steps away from the cruise ship terminal, impresses visitors with its 19th-century buildings at the Old Port Exchange.

Stop at the Wadsworth-Longfellow House and explore the poet’s childhood home. Even better, two classic New England small towns brimming with Victorian mansions and colorful fishing boats – Kennebunkport and Yarmouth – are just a short drive away.

Taste the Mustard in Eastport, Maine

If you want to visit the easternmost city in the continental U.S., consider a cruise to Eastport. It’s a destination entirely comprised of islands.

Eastport’s cruise port is located on Moose Island, the largest island in the archipelago. Cruise ships dock in the heart of downtown, within walking distance to the town’s main street.

From there, explore the beautifully preserved 19th-century Italianate architecture, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Another must-see is to tour Roosevelt Campobello International Park and visit Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s beloved summer cottage.

Finally, for a memorable souvenir, pick up a jar of Raye’s mustard from the only remaining traditional stoneground mustard mill in North America.

Rockland, Maine

Nestled in Penobscot Bay, Rockland is nicknamed the Jewel of the Maine Coast. And it’s about as charming a New England town as you can find. Cruise lines such as Norwegian and American Cruise Lines offer itineraries to Rockland.

Historic landmarks abound, including nine schooners of the Maine Windjammer fleet, over a dozen lighthouses and the beautifully preserved Rockland Main Street. Rockland’s most popular indoor attraction is the Farnsworth Art Museum and the Wyeth Center art collection. These buildings house three generations of Wyeth artwork.

If you’re a car buff, visit nearby Owls Head Transportation Museum to check out the first aircraft and automobiles from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Gloucester, Massachusetts and Its Historic Seaport

Located just north of Boston, on the Cape Ann promontory, Gloucester is the oldest working seaport in America. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the 1.2 mile Harbor Walk before making your way downtown to embark on a self-guided historic and cultural tour of Gloucester.

Artists have been drawn to this iconic seaside town for decades, and the result is a thriving modern-day community. The Rocky Neck Art Colony is the go-to place for handcrafted souvenirs, paintings and ceramics.

If there’s enough time, step aboard The Lannon, a 65-foot schooner, for a two-hour harbor cruise. Cruise lines to Gloucester include American Cruise Lines, offering sailings to Gloucester on its New England itineraries.

Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts

Located seven miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard is known for its stately lighthouses, gingerbread cottages and charming towns. You’ll want to explore historic Edgartown before making your way to Oak Bluffs to admire Victorian cottages and take a spin on Flying Horses Carousel. It’s the oldest continuously operating carousel in the country.

If you arrive hungry, rest assured. The island offers everything from home-made honey-covered donuts to freshly steamed lobster and old-time ice cream parlors.

Of course, you won’t want to miss grabbing a bite at the legendary Black Dog Tavern in Vineyard Haven.

The 7 Best Boston Harbor Cruises [2024 Reviews]

Boston may not be as glittery as New York City, or as opulent as Paris, but it is absolutely the perfect place to visit if you’d like to immerse yourself in the cradle of American history.

Every time I visit, I fall more in love with the way the wind tousles my hair and the salty sea air fills my lungs. Towering skyscrapers contrast legendary landmarks like the Old North Church and Fenway Park, creating beautiful images you have to see to believe.

If you want to experience it in one of the best ways possible, I highly recommend checking out these top Boston Harbor dinner and sunset cruises. History, beauty, and adventure intermingle here, from the infamous Boston Tea Party to harbor island mysteries – there’s something for everyone.

Boston Harbor Cruise Reviews

1. boston harbor: gourmet brunch or dinner cruise.

  • Duration:  2 – 3 hours
  • Departure:  60 Rowes Wharf, Boston
  • Departure Time: 7:00 PM
  • Includes:  Buffet brunch or 3-course dinner, coffee, tea, iced tea, onboard DJ and dance floor

Starting things off on the right foot, we have one of the most popular tours of its kind in all of Boston. The Boston Harbor: Gourmet Brunch or Dinner Cruise Tour  is perfect for those who are looking to enjoy life, and perhaps get down to some danceable tunes on board!

If you’ve just landed in the city or its your first time there, this is a perfect introduction to the shimmering waters and the interesting architecture which surrounds it.

Once you arrive to your comfortable boat, you’ll be escorted on board where you’ll get to hang out and relax for a while and enjoy being greeted by the captain and crew.

I felt like the staff was top-notch, with an elegant and charming atmosphere and incredible attention to detail and customer service. As you meet them, you’ll have a photo taken to capture the moment by the ship’s professional photographer.

Once seated at your private table, the stage is set for a culinary adventure that honestly was a pleasant surprise.

Expand To See More See Less

The executive chef is simply a genius, creating a gastronomic symphony consisting of a 3-course plated dinner (you can also opt for a lavish buffet brunch if you’re looking for a morning tour).

Whatever you choose, you can count on each dish dancing on your taste buds, showcasing the chef’s creativity and dedication to using fresh, quality ingredients.

However, the food, combined with the panoramic views of Boston’s skyline, seeing the iconic Bunker Hill, and the impressive USS Constitution were all amazing!

The live DJ put on songs to get everyone dancing, and with the Odyssey’s three climate-controlled decks, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the view and the entire experience.

More Information & Tour Booking

100% refund for cancellations within 24 hours of tour experience, 2. boston harbor champagne sunset sail from rowes wharf.

  • Duration:  2 hours
  • Departure: 70 Rowes Wharf, Boston
  • Departure Time:  7:30 PM
  • Includes:  2-hour sunset sail tour,  Captain and crew, complimentary water

The allure of the open sea, gentle sway of a boat, and the warm setting sun on the skin is always appealing when you’re in Boston. On this next tour, you’ll feel like you’re being transported back in time on an elegant 80-foot classic Schooner.

The Boston: Harbor Champagne Sunset Sail from Rowes Wharf is a fantastic way to enjoy a celebratory evening with that special someone, or a wonderful precursor to a delicious dinner onshore. This sightseeing sunset cruise is romantic, yet engaging enough to bring children along, too!

As the sails catch the evening breeze, you’ll be able to fully relax onboard and enjoy the sprawling Boston skyline while settling in and enjoying either complimentary water, beer, wine, or champagne.

Soft drinks are also available to purchase, which I did feel like should have been free of charge, but it wasn’t a big deal. However, I was really impressed by the vessel itself: the Adirondack III, which offered mesmerizing views.

You’ll get to see all kinds of historic sites, from the Boston Fish Pier to the Moakley Federal Courthouse – each one being a testament to the city’s rich heritage.

The graceful vessel was super smooth, making the thoughtfully-curated selection of beverages that much more enjoyable as we journeyed on. What really made the experience special, though, was the attentive crew who regaled us with tales of the sea.

You’ll learn all about the Charleston Navy Yard, Waterfront Park, the secrets of Boston Harbor, and more, as you pass each location. As the sun starts due set, it casts beautiful gold and amber across the horizon, making it perfect for some selfies against the Boston skyline!

Don’t forget to take snaps of Castle Island, the Donald McKay Monument, and the nature, itself!

3. Signature Spirit of Boston Lunch Cruise

  • Duration:  2 hours
  • Departure:  200 Seaport Blvd. Boston
  • Departure Time:  12:00 PM
  • Includes:  2-hour lunch cruise, All-you-can-eat buffet, DJ entertainment, Coffee, tea and iced tea, taxes and fees

Instead of going out to lunch somewhere on land, why don’t you try something exclusively “Boston” and enjoy dining right on the water where so many important moments from American history occurred?

The Signature Spirit of Boston Lunch Cruise Tour  will take you to a world of breathtaking historic city views with a laid-back and fun-filled ride like no other.

This tour perfectly melds history, beautiful sites, and tasty eats with professional staff that are there to ensure you have a fantastic experience right from the get-go!

Arrive at the Seaport World Trade Center, where you’ll board the beautiful vessel that features multiple decks for you to enjoy different kinds of views.

After exploring the decks, you can find your way to a table against the panoramic windows and get ready for an amazing lunch buffet! It is all-you-can-eat and I found everything but the desserts to be exceptional (the desserts aren’t bad, just nothing special).

As you glide through the waters, get ready to pass by the World Trade Center, the site where rebels started the Boston Tea Party, where the Boston Massacre claimed the lives of many colonists, and more.

One of the coolest parts of the tour, for me, was seeing the World War II Naval destroyer, the USS Cassin Young, along with the USS Constitution, known lovingly as “Old Ironsides”.

You’ll hear all about the oldest fully-commissioned naval vessel in the world, as well as Fort Independence, and the Tobin Memorial Bridge: a symbol of progress. Head up to the top deck, where you can get some fresh air and views that stretch out as far as the eye can see.

This makes for some fantastic videos and photos, with no obstructions to block your field of vision. Oh, and if you feel like getting your groove on, there is a live DJ on board spinning all kinds of fun tunes! You can choose to get out on the dancefloor or simply focus on the amazing views all around you as you cruise on.

4. Boston Sunset Tall Ship Harbor Cruise

  • Duration:  1.5 to 2 hours
  • Departure:  1 Central Wharf, Boston
  • Departure Time: 6:00 PM
  • Includes:  Cruise, learn how to hoist sails properly

How would you like to be whisked away on a sailing experience that will ignite your sense of wonder and take you on a historic journey through Boston Harbor’s legendary waters?

With the  Boston: Sunset Tall Ship Harbor Cruise Tour , you’ll be transported to a bygone era by boarding either the majestic Schooner Liberty or the nimble Liberty Star.

See and learn all about the Boston skyline, the iconic harbor, and the various neighborhoods’ backgrounds all from the prime viewing location right on the water, as the sun is setting!

Upon arrival to the harbor, you’ll be greeted by the captain and crew and can even help the crew hoist the same old-school way! It’s not for the faint of heart, but it is a fun activity that most people won’t have done before!

Either way, enjoy the cool breeze and help out or relax, enjoy a drink, and watch as the others struggle to haul the massive sails! Everyone is incredibly friendly and you can tell that they truly enjoy sharing the experience and their knowledge with visitors.

If you select the Liberty Star ride, it will be 1.5 hours, while the Liberty Clipper will be a bit longer, at 2 hours long. If you’d like, you can even take a turn at the helm and get an idea of what it’s like to steer such a massive vessel!

While no coolers or BYOB is permitted and while there is no food served on board, you can bring your own food and make a picnic while cruising along and taking in all the sites!

As you cruise along, the captain and crew will tell you all about the rich and rather dramatic history of Boston and its harbor. Take photos and enjoy the magnificent views of the Boston skyline, with its array of architectural marvels, where the Prudential Tower and John Hancock Tower rises proudly out over the water.

5. Sunset Sailing Cruise on a Tall Ship in Boston Harbor

  • Departure: 6:00 PM
  • Departure Time:  Central Wharf, Boston
  • Includes:  Free exercise if you help the crew hoist those sails, Sales tax, unique view of the Boston skyline, Sunset Cruise of Boston Harbor on one of the famous Tall Ships

This next 2-hour tour has proven to be some of the most fun you can have while in Boston! The Sunset Sailing Cruise on a Tall Ship in Boston Harbor Tour  also gives you the option of sailing out on the 67-foot Liberty Star or the 125-foot Liberty Clipper, where you will be able to enjoy interesting stories, views, and a beautiful experience.

This classic sailing adventure will take you away from the hustle and bustle of the city and go back in time, with plenty of fresh air and sunshine!

Start off by making your way over to the Central Wharf, where you’ll meet up with the captain and crew before boarding. You get to choose if you’d like to help the crew by grabbing a line and hoisting up the sails, or relaxing and watching the fun take place in front of you.

If you have any questions, they’re more than happy to fill you in on technique or anything else you may want to know. I loved how much space there was onboard, with plenty of different viewpoints to catch the surrounding harbor and skyline views.

This is a great way to spend an afternoon before grabbing dinner and watching the sunrise from one of the best vantage points possible. As you cruise on, you’ll pass important sites such as Fort Independence, East Boston, the Charlestown Navy Yard, and much more.

As you pass each location, the crew will recount interesting anecdotes and fun stories that only enrich the experience, overall. Should you get thirsty or want a little snack, they sell both at the ship’s galley bar, too.

6. Sightseeing Day Sail around Boston Harbor

  • Duration:  1.5 to 2 hours
  • Departure Time: Variety of times available
  • Includes:  Unique tour

This is the perfect way to create a fun and relaxing time when in the city, especially if it’s your first time in Boston.

The Sightseeing Day Sail around Boston Harbor Tour  is one of the best ways to get the “lay of the land” in a short amount of time, so you can further explore the ones that caught your attention later on.

With smooth sailing, interesting historical accounts, an environment perfect for all ages, and fantastic views, you definitely need to consider this tour!

I will say that this is one of the more “basic” tours in terms of food and entertainment such as live music and dancing, but that didn’t detract at all from our experience. In fact, for history buffs (particularly regarding American history), I found this to be one of the most interesting options out there!

Your tour will start off by you and your party heading to Rowes Wharf, where you’ll board a replica of a pilot schooner which was so impressive!

After boarding, you’ll have plenty of time to ask the captain and crew any questions you may have about the vessel, their jobs, or the city, itself. I loved how knowledgeable and friendly everyone was, which made it feel like you were simply hanging out with friends.

You do get to choose between either a 1.5-hour or 2-hour tour, which I felt were both timed and planned nicely.

There is a water cooler available to fill reusable bottles, so remember to bring one if you plan on hydrating. There is also a card-only bar on board where you can enjoy wine, beer, and plenty of soft drinks. With various start times available, you’re sure to be able to fit this tour in, no matter what your schedule looks like!

7. Boston Downtown Harbor Sailing Cruise

  • Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Departure: 70 Rowes Wharf
  • Departure Time: 1:00 PM or 3:00 PM
  • Includes:  1.5 or 2-hour sailing cruise (depending on option selected),  Captain and crew,  Complimentary soda and water

Prepare to throw out any mundane plans you may have had and instead, embark on an exhilarating voyage that will completely redefine your perception of Boston.

The  Boston: Downtown Harbor Sailing Cruise Tour  will ship you and your party off on a sailing adventure that’s perfect for the entire family, no matter the age or background of the participants.

You’ll get to experience the 80-foot pilot schooner, the Adiondack III, which gives you insane views of Beantown and its downtown area that you’re sure to fall in love with.

Meet up with your captain and crew at Rowes Wharf and hop onboard so you can be escorted around and find the perfect spot to soak it all in. Feast your eyes on a panorama packed full of iconic landmarks that you may already know about from movies or school.

From the storied Boston Fish Pier to the rather imposing Moakley Federal Courthouse at Fan Pier, you’ll get to see history and culture literally unfolding as you sail on by.

As you pass each area, the crew will fill you in on any interesting anecdotes as well as more well-known stories about them. I was particularly captivated by the majestic Castle Island, which was known for all kinds of important battles fought and victories won, here.

If you’re into maritime heritage at all, you’ll love seeing the historic Charleston Navy Yard and hearing fascinating tales about the people who frequented it and special events that occurred here.

The Waterfront Park is a beautiful green haven that offers a bit of a break from the busy city streets, along with the New England Aquarium which you may choose to explore more later on. If you would like any recommendations, I found the captain and crew to be practically experts on the matter.

Exciting and Vibrant City in New South Wales – Photogenic Beaches

Sydney is the oldest and largest city of Australia, located on the east coastline of New South Wales.

It’s an exciting and vibrant city, situated in New South Wales, world famous for its shimmering skyline and the iconic Opera House, the symbol of both Sydney and Australia. Stay in downtown Sydney pre or post cruise hotels or self contained apartments and you are close to all fascinating sights this city has to offer.

Sydney Australia — the majestic Sydney Harbour Bridge is the world’s tallest steel arch bridge. Nicknamed “The Coathanger”, it connects the north and south shore. From Pylon Lookout you have a magnificent view of the harbor. Don’t miss a world class performance at the famous Sydney Opera House, an architectural masterpiece with sail-like curves located in Circular Quay.

Ascent Australia’s highest building, The Sydney Tower, and savour the fantastic views from the observation level. Sydney’s tallest structure soars 1,000 feet (305 m). Take a ride in one of the cross harbour ferries or enjoy a scenic boat cruise around the harbour for the best views of the city.

Look for bargains at one of the gift shops in The Rocks district, rich in history and unique colonial buildings. Located at Sydney Cove, this area is well known for its pubs, restaurants, 5 star hotels, galleries and museums. The Rocks is also the site of Australia’s first permanent European settlement.

A Super Fun Bar Harbor Cruise Port Itinerary (On Your Own)

During our unforgettable Canada and New England vacation, my friend Angie and I sailed into the breathtaking port of Bar Harbor, Maine, aboard a Holland America cruise. As our last stop, we couldn’t wait to explore all this charming destination had to offer— from exploring picturesque Acadia National Park to catching glimpses of celebrity homes. We crafted a meticulously planned itinerary that perfectly suited our desires. Here is the Bar Harbor cruise port itinerary we created that left us with perfect Maine memories.

First, Rent a Car

As we had arranged in advance, Angie and I were promptly picked up at the port by Enterprise rental cars. After a 30-minute drive, we arrived at the airport and collected our vehicle.

Although reaching our destination and completing the necessary paperwork took some time, the rental price was reasonable, and we were pleased to have control over our day’s itinerary.

With excellent fuel efficiency, the car proved cost-effective, resulting in a total price of $140, including refueling and the rental itself. While the roads were easily navigable, cellular service was intermittent in certain areas.

Seal Harbor

Located just 30 minutes from the Bar Harbor cruise port, we decided to take the scenic route toward Acadia National Park and explore the highly recommended areas. One such area is Seal Harbor, renowned for its stunning mansions and celebrity residences, including Martha Stewart .

Navigating through the winding roads of these charming neighborhoods can be a challenge when trying to find specific addresses of the homes you wish to see. Nonetheless, we strolled along, marveling at the magnificent multi-million dollar properties that dotted the landscape.

Venturing out to MDI (Mount Desert Island) is an absolute delight, as it is home to Bar Harbor and a cluster of upscale Maine towns. These towns are favored summer destinations for affluent socialites and boast impressive art galleries, exquisite dining options, and unique accommodation.

The charming city of Ellsworth, nestled on the way to Acadia National Park, offers a picturesque gateway filled with delightful attractions. There is plenty to enjoy, from museums to birding hotspots and the captivating Timber Tina’s  Great Maine Lumberjack Show  that runs throughout the summer. Take advantage of the incredible telephone museum, an intriguing dive into our communication history.

Among the charming towns, my favorite is  Northeast Harbor , reminiscent of serene hamlets in upstate New York. Its quaint village shops, captivating eateries, and an air of sophistication make it a playground for the affluent, including notable homeowners like the Rockefeller’s.

While exploring, visit Main Street Mercantile, a must-see shop brimming with souvenirs, glassware, household items, and delightful baby gifts. It’s truly a joy to uncover the hidden treasures of these enchanting small towns at your own pace.

Lunch at Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound

Angie and I share a love for food, and we were thrilled to indulge in some delectable fresh Maine lobster. I’m confident that you’ll feel the same way. After receiving a local recommendation, we eagerly went to  Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound . This charming restaurant has been serving customers since 1956.

Here, you’ll discover some of the finest lobsters in the world, sourced from Mount Desert Island and sold within hours of being caught. It doesn’t get much fresher than that!

For our meal, we both opted for a Lobster Roll accompanied by sides of coleslaw and potato salad. The rolls were perfectly crispy on the outside and delightfully soft on the inside. What’s more, the rolls were generously filled with juicy lobster meat. A side of melted butter provided the ideal complement for dipping our lobster rolls, resulting in a truly divine bite.

Visit Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park, commonly known as the Crown Jewel of the North Atlantic Coast, is the premier attraction in Bar Harbor. It is easily one of the key reasons the cruise ships tend to visit here on their  Canada and New England itineraries . Our  Holland America ship  featured some fantastic Acadia National Park trips, but we wanted to see several other things in the area, hence curating our own itinerary.

Immerse yourself in the grandeur of this massive park, spanning across half of Mount Desert Island. Begin your exploration by traversing Park Loop Road’s winding 27 miles, where scenic overlooks and captivating photo opportunities await at every turnout.

Marvel at the breathtaking views the oceanside cliffs offer, granting you a splendid vantage point of the park’s pristine beauty. Encounter the serene beach setting of Thunder Hole and Sand Beach, starkly contrasting the lush, tree-covered mountains. The rhythmic force of the surf lapping against the rocky shore will surely mesmerize.

acadia-national-park-overlook

During our visit to Acadia National Park , we unfortunately couldn’t find the time to explore the renowned Jordan Pond House and its scenic trail or indulge in the famous popover restaurant. Instead, we decided to head to Frenchman Bay, where we captured breathtaking photos of the stunning beachfront and the majestic mountains in the background.

Keep an eye out for the picturesque Porcupine Islands, the charming mounds of land rising from the shimmering waters of Frenchman Bay .

Cadillac Mountain

The pinnacle of Acadia National Park awaits at Cadillac Mountain, its granite-topped peak towering at an elevation of 1532 feet. As the highest mountain along the North Atlantic seaboard, this awe-inspiring summit treats visitors to a panoramic 360-degree vista overlooking Bar Harbor, Frenchman Bay, and the Cranberry Isles.

A close second in terms of natural beauty lies within Jordan Pond, an exquisite area framed by the majestic Penobscot Mountain and the iconic “The Bubbles.”

Watch for the wild blueberries that flourish in the area, adding a delightful touch to your journey. While witnessing the nation’s first sunrise may prove unlikely for cruising enthusiasts, Cadillac Mountain proudly holds this title. Trust me when I say the pictures depicting this remarkable spectacle are nothing short of magnificent.

Bass Harbor Head Light

Visiting Bass Harbor Head Light is a must for those passionate about lighthouses. Perched on the rugged granite shoreline of MDI, this historic beacon, dating back to 1855, stands as one of the most photographed lighthouses along the Eastern Seaboard.

While visitors can explore the impressive grounds, please note that the lighthouse is privately owned and not open for public entry.

Shop for Souvenirs in Bar Harbor

Downtown Bar Harbor, steps away from the cruise port, is the ultimate destination for all your souvenir needs. From unique and cheesy mementos to adorable and fantastic treasures, you’ll find practically every type of souvenir here. Spend your day leisurely browsing through the relaxed and fun offerings in this port.

Don’t miss out on visiting two must-see stores:  Cool as a Moose  and Fair Trade Winds. These stores are packed with goodies that will leave you spoiled for choice.

If you’re a jewelry enthusiast like myself, you’ll be thrilled to know that Maine is the source of the elusive watermelon tourmaline. The pieces available here are stunning. Additionally, upscale food products such as jams, jellies, sauces , syrups, and more are perfect for taking home as souvenirs.

flowers-bar-harbor-cruise-port

No trip to this region of Maine would be complete without indulging in the flavors of blueberry. We highly recommend trying the blueberry soft-serve ice cream cone from CJ’s Big Dipper. Heavens to Betsy, it’s truly phenomenal!

As you stroll along the pedestrian-clad sidewalks and explore the immaculate stores, galleries, and wineries, it becomes evident why Bar Harbor has remained a beloved New England summer retreat for over a century.

Bar Harbor: A Visit to Remember

Upon completing our day tour, we returned the car to the airport. Angie and I were then chauffeured back to Bar Harbor, allowing us to explore the area near our cruise ship at our leisure. Opting for self-guided exploration in Bar Harbor proved to be an excellent decision. We avoided waiting for large groups to embark and disembark from buses, skipped unwanted destinations, and were not bound by rigid itineraries.

Planning your trip should be smooth. We hope that these recommended suggestions for the Bar Harbor cruise port mentioned above will enhance your experience in this remarkable destination.
