Furthur: The Bus Then & Now

In the 60s In 1964, Ken Kesey and his group of “Merry Pranksters,” fueled by LSD and a free-wheeling spirit of adventure, painted a 1939 International Harvester school bus in DayGlo colors and piloted it across the US on a trip that would go down in history as a cultural milestone. The bus, dubbed “Further” (or “Furthur,” varying by day and mood), was purchased largely with Ken’s earnings from the publication of his best-selling novel,  One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest . Tom Wolfe’s popular 1968 account of the trip and the bus,  The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test , would go on to cement Furthur and the Pranksters as cultural icons signaling broad changes in American society.

What it Represents More than any other work of art, the bus represents the sweeping changes that came over the country in the 60s. As people began to question traditional values and means of expression, Furthur stood as a highly visible representation of a new brand of American freedom. In a highly positive and meaningful way, its whimsical character became a metaphor for a new brand of psychedelic exploration. While the Pranksters, themselves, bridged the gap between the Beats and Hippies, the bus was a physical manifestation of the idea of a psychedelic trip.

Furthur’s Decline By the late 1960s, the original Furthur began to fall into disrepair. By that time, Ken had returned to Oregon, where he raised his family, continued to write, and taught at the University of Oregon. While a second  version  of Furthur (not “Furthur 2”) was created in the late 1980s, the original bus was resigned to the “swamp,” a wet, low-lying area behind the Kesey family farm. Overgrown by weeds and surrendered to the wild, the bus remained in the swamp till October 2005, when a group of about 30 Pranksters, family, and devoted fans cut away the blackberry vines and trees that had overtaken it and pulled it free. During its time unprotected in the outdoors, Furthur largely rusted away. The interior rotted, and the once-beautiful exterior art faded nearly completely away.

Let’s Bring it Back Following its initial rescue in 2005, the bus has been safely secluded away in covered storage. Lacking the significant funding necessary to rebuild it and restore its art, it has continued to slowly rust. With your generous donations, and the help of highly qualified restoration experts and artists, we hope to soon return the bus to its 1964 splendor, and preserve this important and inspirational artifact to inspire future generations as has inspired so many others.

Vice President Kamala Harris and running mate Gov. Tim Walz will kick off their bus tour to the Democratic National Convention in Pittsburgh this weekend.

According to the Harris-Walz campaign, the Democratic duo will start their journey to Chicago in the Steel City on Sunday and make multiple stops in the state throughout the day.

The presidential campaign for presumptive Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz has announced a bus tour ahead of the Democratic National Convention that will kick off in Pittsburgh on Sunday.

Vice President Harris, Gov. Walz, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff and Walz’s wife, Gwen, will all be in attendance over the course of the tour, according to the campaign.

It will be the first time all four have campaigned together.

The tour is being called "On The Road To Chicago," which is the city where the DNC will take place next week.

Harris-Walz to kick off 'Road to Chicago' bus tour from Pittsburgh Sunday

Vice President Kamala Harris and running mate Gov. Tim Walz will kick off a bus tour from Pittsburgh Sunday, stopping in multiple Western Pennsylvania spots.

The tour, dubbed "on the Road to Chicago," comes the day before the Democratic National Convention kicks off in Chicago, the Harris-Walz campaign told USA TODAY Wednesday.

The candidates' spouses Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff and Gwen Walz will join them on the tour, the first time all four are campaigning together. The group will focus on meeting voters in their communities, stopping at volunteer canvass events and local retailers.

This will be Harris' eighth visit to Pennsylvania this year. The tour is scheduled after Harris is expected to make her first policy-centered speech in Raleigh, North Carolina Friday.

Pennsylvania is a key battleground state

Pennsylvania provides 19 electoral votes (one less than it did in 2020). It was one of a handful of states that switched its vote from Donald Trump in 2016 to the Democratic Party in 2020.

In 2016, Trump won the state by less than 50,000 votes, beating Hillary Clinton with 48.6% of the vote compared to 47.9% of the vote for Clinton.

In 2020, President Joe Biden won 50% of the votes, beating Trump who won 48.8% of the vote.

Harris has already made several campaign stops in Pennsylvania, including her first appearance with running mate Walz. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro was another top contender for vice president.

When is the Democratic National Convention?

Harris' western Pennsylvania tour comes as many others in the party are headed to Chicago for the DNC.

The DNC is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 19 through Thursday Aug. 22.

This tour will show you the best of the West Rim, including the glass-bottomed Grand Canyon Skywalk bridge (for an added fee). After being picked up from select Vegas hotels and traveling three hours on an air-conditioned bus, passengers get to spend up to four hours exploring the West Rim. A must-see lookout point at the West Rim is Guano Point, from which you can trek to Highpoint Hike and get a view of the Colorado River.

A lunch box, snacks and plenty of water are included with the tour. One unique feature of this outing is that you get to stop at the Hoover Dam for a photo (but keep in mind this stop is only available seasonally). You can also choose from several upgrades, including a Skywalk admission ticket, a helicopter ride or a boat excursion.

No matter which option you choose, previous travelers say you will enjoy this tour — especially the expert guides, who they describe as both informative and entertaining.

Good to know: Because it's closer to the Las Vegas desert, this side of the Grand Canyon is the warmest year-round, with hot and dry summers, mild shoulder seasons, and occasional snowfall in the winter.

If you're looking to visit the South Rim — the most popular part of Grand Canyon National Park — consider this bus tour from National Park Express. Tour rates include admission to some of the most popular Grand Canyon attractions , including Mather Point and Bright Angel Point , and you'll get about three hours total to explore. Previous travelers commend the tour guides and drivers, noting they are both knowledgable and pleasant.

Lunch, bottled water and a granola bar are included in tour rates. Plus, you can select your own pickup location from several Las Vegas-area hotels and be dropped off at one of three locations (Excalibur, Horseshoe or Treasure Island).

This bus tour – which takes around four hours to get to the South Rim's Mather Point from Vegas – gives visitors the opportunity to walk along Bright Angel Trail; it leads to Bright Angel Lodge, located in the Village Historic District.

Due the nature of this type of tour and varying demand, group travellers should be aware that there is no guarantee that the group will be able to travel altogether as the available seats vary from stop to stop and depends on demand each day. The group may need to split up and/or wait for the next bus(s).

Vice President Kamala Harris and Tim Walz to begin bus tour in Pittsburgh

P ITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Prior to the Democratic National Convention, Vice President and Democratic nominee for president Kamala Harris along with her running mate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will be hitting the road as part of a bus tour and it will kick off here in Pittsburgh. 

Joining them will be Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff and Gwen Walz as they travel to Chicago for the Democratic National Convention. 

According to the Harris-Walz Campaign, the tour starts in Pittsburgh and will make multiple stops across Pennsylvania and other states. 

The Democratic National Convention will take place in Chicago from August 19 through August 22. 

This will mark the eighth time Vice President Harris has visited Pennsylvania this year and the 18th time since she was sworn in as vice president. 

The Harris-Walz Campaign said that they have 36 offices, and 300 staffers, and have had more than 43,000 people sign up to support the campaign in Pennsylvania since it began four weeks ago. 

This comes just days after former President Donald Trump said he would be returning to Butler for a campaign stop after an assassination attempt in July. 

The Trump Campaign has not announced the date or location in Butler for his rally. 

Wilson Announces 2024 Bus Tour

Harris and Walz to kick off Pennsylvania bus tour in Pittsburgh

The day before the opening of the Democratic National Convention, Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will kick off a bus tour of Pennsylvania in Pittsburgh on Sunday, the campaign announced. It will be the pair’s first campaign appearance in western Pennsylvania, after Harris introduced Walz at a rally in Philadelphia on Aug. 6. They’ll be joined by their spouses Doug Emhoff and Gwen Walz.

The campaign said the tour would  focus on “meeting voters where they are” in community settings, with stops to include canvassing kick off events and local retail stops.

Harris officially became the Democrats’ presidential nominee earlier this month by a roll call vote of Democratic National Committee delegates, after President Joe Biden dropped his reelection bid last month and endorsed her.

This will be Harris’ eighth visit to Pennsylvania this year, and her 18th visit since being sworn into office, the campaign said.  She appeared in the commonwealth on July 13 in Philadelphia to court Asian-American voters and has also made stops this cycle in Pittsburgh to tout the administration’s infrastructure investments, in Philadelphia to talk student debt with educators , and in Montgomery County to speak in support of reproductive rights .

The campaign said it now has  36 coordinated offices and nearly 300 staffers on the ground across Pennsylvania, and in the four weeks since Harris announced her candidacy, more than 43,000 people  have signed up to volunteer for the campaign in Pennsylvania.

Although he visited the eastern half of the state several times in 2024, Biden only made one 2024 campaign stop in western Pennsylvania, visiting the United Steelworkers in April ahead of the state’s primary election.

Former President Donald Trump, the 2024 GOP nominee for president, will campaign in Wilkes-Barre on Saturday for a rally at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. The visit will be Trump’s seventh to the Keystone State in 2024, but his first to northeast Pennsylvania this cycle. Trump appeared in Harrisburg for a rally on July 31 , his first visit to Pennsylvania following an assassination attempt during a rally in Butler on July 13.

A Times-Siena poll released Aug. 10 shows Harris leading Trump by four percentage points in the key battleground states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan.

Many years ago, and thanks to our friend George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, we made a decision to convert some of our coaches from 12 bunkers to 14 bunkers...

This move has opened the door to helping bands save money by "sharing a bus" with an opening act, or carrying a full crew and keeping the cost involved to only one bus...

With a year round rate starting at $850 / day, our 2013 to 2016 model 14 bunker coaches can really make a difference to bands and touring theatrical shows that are faced with tight budgetary restraints...

Their decision was to NOT charge a client an overdrive at 450 miles, but rather at 501 miles.

This was a HUGE move on their part. Unheard of in the industry. They were mocked and ridiculed by their esteemed colleagues in the industry.

BUT... They made a difference.

So, ever since 2005, our great drivers have made a significant difference to our clients every day with their overdrive structure, which starts at 501 miles, not at 450 miles like our competition!

TRAILER WEIGHT LIMITS…

Most of the time, this is not a problem, as most bands are staying within our 10,000 pound limit for GVWT (Gross Vehicle Weight, or a loaded trailer)...

By the way, for you Production Managers, our trailers weight about 4,500 pounds empty, leaving you about 5,500 pounds for the gear / merch...

Anyhow, a more frequent occurrence is that we find ourselves receiving a frantic call from our drivers at pick up stating that "this trailer is very heavy"...

So we instruct the driver to immediately weigh the full trailer, only to find that the GVWT is over 10,000 pounds... This becomes a new problem...

To battle this potential problem, we suggest making sure your packed load is less than 5,500 pounds, and if you must exceed that limit, act BEFORE the tour pick up...

Rent a box truck and a driver...

Star Coaches now has a small team of box truck drivers that can help solve the problem of a disaster at pick up...

If you can't get the gear to 5,500 pounds, let us know, and we will gladly assign one of our auxiliary drivers to your rented box truck from Hertz, Budget or UHaul...
