The PGA Tour Plans at Least One Event in Asia This Fall

The PGA Tour Plans at Least One Event in Asia This Fall

  • Author: Associated Press

The Zozo Championship outside Tokyo is still on the schedule though the HSBC Champions in Shanghai has reportedly been canceled.

pga tour events in asia

OWING MILLS, Md. (AP) โ€” The PGA Tour is still planning on one event for its Asia Swing this fall.

Players were notified last week the Zozo Championship outside Tokyo was still on the schedule, and they faced a deadline for visa applications in case they decide to go.

But that will be the only stop, assuming it happens.

Two people aware of the decision say the HSBC Champions in Shanghai has been canceled. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the tour hasnโ€™t announced the decision.

The PGA Tour lost its Asia Swing to the COVID-19 pandemic last year. The HSBC Champions, a World Golf Championships event since 2009, was canceled. The CJ Cup in South Korea moved to Shadow Creek north of Las Vegas, while the Zozo Championship moved to Sherwood Country Club in Thousands Oaks, California.

The CJ Cup already has announced it is returning to Las Vegas, this time at the prestigious Summit Club. Japan-based Zozo does not have a U.S. presence, and it was a big step for the company to hold its tournament in California.

Patrick Cantlay , who already is particular with his travel time and schedule, won last year at Sherwood. It was not clear if he planned to return to defend.

Spectators were not allowed at Kasumigaseki for the Olympics. The Zozo Championship is scheduled for Narashino Country Club in the Chiba prefecture. Oddly enough, it is not listed on the Japan Golf Tour website, even though the tournament is co-sanctioned with the PGA Tour.

If anyone was looking to spend two weeks in Japan, the following week is the ISPS Handa, which has one of the smallest prize funds on the Japan Golf Tour.

The tour schedule for the fall goes from Las Vegas to Japan to Bermuda . The Bermuda Championship typically is held opposite the HSBC Champions and last year received full status, meaning Brian Gay earned a spot in the Masters by winning.

Phil Mickelson wants to avoid an early-ish exit

Phil Mickelson will be trying to avoid a unique list of players who have won majors and have short PGA Tour postseasons.

Mickelson won the PGA Championship in May, making him at age 50 the oldest major champion in history. But that was his only top 10, and he has only one other finish in the top 20. He missed the cut at The Northern Trust and narrowly stayed in the top 70 of the FedEx Cup who advanced to the BMW Championship.

The top 30 reach East Lake for the Tour Championship.

Itโ€™s unusual, but not unprecedented. Shane Lowry ( British Open ) and Tiger Woods (Masters) in 2019 were the last players to win majors and not make it to East Lake. Before that, Danny Willett (Masters) and Henrik Stenson (British Open) won majors and didnโ€™t reach the Tour Championship.

The others were Charl Schwartzel (Masters) in 2011 and Angel Cabrera ( U.S. Open ) in 2007.

Also on the list are Woods and Padraig Harrington in 2008, where an asterisk is required. The points system was so volatile that Harrington missed two cuts and couldnโ€™t recover. In the current system, he would have been assured East Lake.

As for Woods? He had knee surgery after winning the U.S. Open and didnโ€™t play the rest of the year. He still was at No. 32 going into the third playoff event.

Jimmy Johnson is being inducted into the Caddie Hall of Fame

The honor comes from the Western Golf Association, which has a deep caddie heritage with its fabled Evans Scholars Foundation that awards college tuition to high-achieving caddies.

Johnson, 64, began his career playing the Sunshine Tour where he became friends with Nick Price, who later asked him to caddie for him.

Johnson also worked for Steve Stricker until the Ryder Cup captain began paring his schedule, and he moved over to Thomas as he began his rise to the elite in golf.

Patty Tavatanakit is the Rolex Annika Major Award winner

Patty Tavatanakit had one last charge to end the LPGA Tourโ€™s major season. She didnโ€™t have a great chance of winning the Womenโ€™s British Open, but her closing 67 at Carnoustie gave her a tie for seventh. That was all the 21-year-old Thai need to pick up another award.

Tavatanakit rallied past Nelly Korda to finish the year with the best record in the five majors, winning the Rolex Annika Major Award.

Players are required to win a major and then earn the most points based on top 10s in the other majors. Tavatanakit won the ANA Inspiration and tied for fifth in the Womenโ€™s PGA Championship. She was among those who didnโ€™t play the Evian Championship because of the Olympics.

Korda tied for third in the ANA Inspiration and won the Womenโ€™s PGA. She was outside the top 10 in two other majors and missed the cut in the U.S. Womenโ€™s Open. Korda had a slight lead over Tavatankit, but closed with a 72 at Carnoustie and tied for 13th, earning no points.

Tavatanakit will receive the award at the LPGA Tourโ€™s final event in November. It began in 2014 and has not had a repeat winner.

Keita Nakajima is the world's leading amateur

Keita Nakajima of Japan has won the Mark H. McCormack Medal as the leading menโ€™s player in the 2021 world amateur ranking, the second straight year golfโ€™s top amateur came from Japan.

Takumi Kanaya won the award last year.

Nakajima earns a spot in the U.S. Open at Brookline and the British Open at St. Andrews next year.

โ€œHeading into university, my goal was to be the No. 1 player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking,โ€ Nakajima said. โ€œMy next goal is to demonstrate my abilities on the world stage with confidence and hopefully follow in the footsteps of my fellow Japanese players including Hideki Matsuyama, Nasa Hataoka, Takumi Kanaya, and Yuka Saso.โ€

Golf news and notes

A good year for Jordan Spieth keeps getting better. He and his wife are expecting their first child in November. ... The PGA Tour has announced two sponsor extensions. The Boeing Classic on the PGA Tour Champions extended through 2024 at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge outside Seattle. On the PGA Tour, the Puntacana Resort & Club in the Dominican Republic announced a four-year extension. It is held opposite the Dell Match Play. ... The PGA Tour Champions will have a new event next year called the ClubCorp Classic at Las Colinas outside Dallas. It will feature 78 players competing for $2 million, along with 50 celebrities and sports stars competing separately in a Stableford competition for a $500,000 purse.

Golf statistic of the week

Jordan Spieth made back-to-back eagles in his second round of 62 and back-to-back triple bogeys in his final round of 79 at The Northern Trust.

The final word

โ€œThis game is hard as it is. These guys are so good as it is. If you canโ€™t believe you can beat them, man, itโ€™s just an uphill battle. And I just continue to believe.โ€ โ€” Tony Finau.

PGA Tour expanding events in Asia next fall

  • Associated Press

PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem was comfortable with two Asia tournaments in the fall when the HSBC Champions in China became a World Golf Championship in 2009 and the CIMB Classic in Malaysia began a year later.

Now that is set to expand.

The PGA Tour plans a new tournament in South Korea that will start next year, giving the tour three straight weeks of golf in Asia that offer at least $7 million in prize money. Yonhap News Agency said South Korean conglomerate CJ Group will be the title sponsor. Details, such as the field and the size of the purse, are expected to be announced Monday in Seoul.

The event in South Korea would give players an easier option of playing two weeks if they are eligible for the World Golf Championship in Shanghai. Instead of an overnight flight from Kuala Lumpur, the flight from Korea is just over two hours across the Yellow Sea.

On Tuesday, the PGA Tour Champions announced its first tournament in Japan.

The Japan Airlines Open will be Sept. 8-10 at Narita Golf Club. That makes the second Asia trip in the history of the 50-and-older circuit. The PGA Tour Champions had a two-year stint in South Korea (2010 and 2011), and it was supposed to take another event to China last year until a factory explosion moved the event to Canada.

LIV pros are dominating Asian Tour event in pursuit of world ranking points

Louis Oosthuizen is tied for the lead with fellow LIV pro Carlos Ortiz at the International Series Event in Omna.

Jason Butler/Getty Images

LIV Golf is off this week, with the next scheduled event beginning March 1 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. But LIV’s players aren’t. Many of them are playing the Asian Tour’s International Series event in Oman , and you don’t have to look hard on the leaderboard to find them.

Through three rounds at Al Mouj Golf in Muscat, LIV players are dominating the tournament. Tied for first place at 12 under is major champion and early LIV convert Louis Oosthuizen , along with fellow LIVer Carlos Ortiz .

Individual winner Charl Schwartzel walks alongside teammates Branden Grace and Louis Oosthuizen of Stinger GC during day three of the 2022 LIV Golf Invitational - London event.

Host of LIV pros hunt for backdoor into majors this week on Asian Tour

But it doesn’t stop there. Tied for third you’ll find American LIV pro Peter Uihlein, just in front of LIV’s Lucas Herbert and Kieran Vincent, who are at 10 under through the first 54 holes.

The two players tied for 10th also cash LIV paychecks: Joaquin Niemann, who earlier this week received a surprise invite to the 2024 Masters , and Matthew Wolff, Brooks Koepka’s much-maligned former LIV teammate .

Of the 21 LIV players in the field, seven of them are within the top 10 with one round to play.

Why are all of these players, who are making considerable money on LIV, plying their trades in Oman this week, and clearly grinding hard to win? It’s all about world ranking points.

Liv pro Joaquin Niemann plays chip shot during 2023 Masters

Augusta announces surprise Masters invites to LIV golfer, two others

The Official World Golf Ranking is the primary way players earn spots in the four major championships in men’s golf: the Masters, the PGA Championship, the U.S. Open and the Open Championship.

But LIV tournaments have never awarded world ranking points, and after the OWGR’s decision in October , they won’t any time soon. So LIV players, whose rankings have dropped significantly after joining the upstart tour, are forced to play elsewhere to earn points.

One of the few places they can is on the Asian Tour, and especially in the PIF-funded International Series events, of which this week’s Oman tournament is a part.

It’s hard to say how many world ranking points are up for grabs in Oman. But given that the strength of the field is weak in terms of OWGR, even the winner is unlikely to be rewarded with significant points.

But Oosthuizen is a good example of the ground players can make up in a short amount of time. Last year, Oosthuizen fell all the way to No. 441 in the OWGR. But after two wins in South African events sanctioned by the DP World Tour late last year, he’s climbed all the way to No. 137. A third win this week should see him climb even higher.

Thompson wins PGA John Deere Classic in record fashion

Washington (AFP) โ€“ Davis Thompson birdied five of the first six holes and cruised to a record-setting four-stroke victory at the John Deere Classic on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title.

Issued on: 08/07/2024 - 00:13

The 25-year-old American fired a seven-under par 64 to finish on a 72-hole tournament-record of 28-under 256 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois.

Thompson, ranked 70th in the world, broke the old mark of 27-under set by American Michael Kim in 2018.

Thompson followed his sizzling start with back-to-back birdies at nine and 10 then answered his lone bogey at 12 with a birdie at 14 and parred his way into the clubhouse.

"I just tried to stay present all day," Thompson said. "When that putt finally went in, just a big sigh of relief."

Taiwan's C.T. Pan, American Michael Thorbjornsen and US amateur Luke Clanton shared second on 260 with Americans Ben Griffin, who shot 62, and Carson Young another stroke adrift.

"A lot of confidence seeing the ball roll in today. It was nice," Griffin said. "It was a really good round."

In his 63rd PGA start, Thompson took his first trophy after a runner-up finish last week in Detroit, another in May at Myrtle Beach and one last year in the California desert.

"It's great," Thompson said. "I've been working hard this year. It was OK for a while then I kind of got going this past month. Played well last week and just tried to keep it rolling this week and I was able to get the win."

Thompson and Pan, the top two not already qualified for the British Open, earned a berth into the showdown at Royal Troon in two weeks. Pan took a spot by having a higher ranking than Clanton or Thorbjornsen.

"Qualifying for the Open was just an added incentive into this," said Thompson. "The goal was to win the golf tournament after getting here this week and I got off to a great start and was able to finish it off."

'Trophy House' winner

Thompson's rental house this week is the same one used in their winning year by 2022 John Deere champion J.T. Poston and 2023 John Deere champion Sepp Straka of Austria. Thompson even has the same bedroom Straka used last year.

It might be only luck, but Thompson isn't planning on giving up his spot in the "Trophy House" even though it comes with an expensive tradition.

"Definitely not," Thompson said. "I think I have to pay for the whole house now, which is unfortunate, but I'll gladly write the check for that."

Clanton didn't qualify for Troon but he did become the first amateur since Billy Joe Patton in 1958 to finish in the top-10 in PGA Tour events in back-to-back weeks.

Thompson, who began the day with a two-stroke lead, made a birdie putt from just inside 45 feet at the first hole and a tap-in birdie at the par-5 second.

He made birdie putts from just inside 14 feet at the fourth, just inside 30 feet at the fifth and just inside 13 feet at the sixth.

Thompson birdied the ninth from just beyond six feet and the par-5 10th and after a bogey at 12 had a tap-in birdie at 14.

Bernhard Langer misses cut at Munich to bring 50-year European tour career to an end

Bernhard Langer's half-century pro career in Europe has come to an end.

Langer missed the cut Friday at the BMW International Open, shooting a 1-over 73 following an opening-round 71 in Munich in his native Germany.

Now 66, Langer played in his first event in what is now called the DP World Tour in 1974. He won 42 times on the tour, second only to the late Seve Ballesteros of Spain.

Langer rose to World No. 1 in 1986.

"I was able to live that dream for 50 years," he said. "I have wonderful memories from all over the world, not just in Europe but Asia, Australia, Japan, America, South Africa. I was able to travel the world and meet with kings and queens.

"I played golf with all sorts of people, whether they were successful businessmen or just the average butcher or bricklayer or whatever, it was fun, it was great."

It isn't an end to Langer's career, however. He continues to play on the PGA Tour Champions circuit and has won 12 majors, most recently the 2023 U.S. Senior Open. He attempted a U.S. Senior Open title defense last month and made the cut before tying for 42nd.

Langer has 123 overall career titles, including at the 1985 and 1993 Masters. He intended to make the final start of his Masters career last April, but he tore an Achilles tendon two months prior and underwent surgery.

Langer also amassed a 21-15-6 Ryder Cup record and captained Europe to the 2004 championship at Oakland Hills in Michigan.

A former Cup teammate, Thomas Bjorn, said Langer will be missed on the DP World Tour.

"You will never meet a truer gentleman in the game than Bernhard Langer," Bjorn said, per the tour's website.

"He is an honor to be around and a pleasure to be around. โ€ฆ I played a lot of tournament golf with him, but I also played a lot of practice golf with him, and he always made me feel welcome into his world."

'I lived the dream': Bernhard Langer bids farewell to DP World Tour

Change Text Size

Bernhard Langer said an emotional farewell to the DP World Tour as he brought the curtain down on a 50-year dream come true at the BMW International Open.

The German made his DP World Tour debut in 1974 and would go on to play over 500 events, claim 42 wins including two Masters, win the Harry Vardon Trophy twice and star in the Ryder Cup as a victorious captain and player.

Bernhard Langerโ€™s Masters memorabilia

This week at Golfclub Mรผnchen Eichenried he played his final event, carding a brilliant opening 71 and then playing through the pain in a second-round 73 in front of huge galleries.

Though he did not make the weekend, Langer got the biggest cheers of the week, holing a gutsy 9-footer on the last for a par before leaving the green to a rapturous ovation.

The 66-year-old was showing signs of emotion as he played the 18th and he had to fight back tears as he spoke after his round, reflecting on a journey and a career that has seen him and the DP World Tour give each other so much.

"It's hard to put into words," Langer said. "It's kind of been a dream come true for me, growing up in a village of 800 people where nobody knew what golf was.

"When I told my classmates that I was going to play golf they thought I was crazy, they thought I was a mini-golfer. People had no idea, it was really a strange situation.

"Even when I finished school and I tried to become a golf professional people didn't even know what that was, it didn't even exist as a profession in a way. So it was very difficult and complicated but it was my dream. I was able to live that dream for 50 years.

It was not all plain sailing for Langer, who had the putting yips several times in his career and has admitted it had him considering giving the game up at times.

But he fought back and revealed he was immensely proud of the legacy that he and fellow European greats Seve Ballesteros, Sir Nick Faldo, Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam โ€“ known as the Big Five โ€“ had left.

"I had lots of ups and downs in my career," he said. "There were difficult times with the yips and other things but I had many wonderful moments.

"It was a privilege to play with the Big Five. I think we spurred each other on and I believe we probably made the Tour in the 80s and 90s what it is now, what it has become.

"It was fun playing against these guys and the youngsters now bear the benefits of that."

Bernhard Langer’s final foray with the DP World Tour after an incredible 50-year run didn’t go as planned as the star missed the cut Friday at the BMW International Open , shooting a 1-over 73 following an opening-round 71 in Munich in his native Germany.

“I was able to live that dream for 50 years,” the 66-year-old said. “I have wonderful memories from all over the world, not just in Europe but Asia, Australia, Japan, America, South Africa. I was able to travel the world and meet with kings and queens.

“I played golf with all sorts of people, whether they were successful businessmen or just the average butcher or bricklayer or whatever, it was fun, it was great.”

But now that Langer has finished off his career overseas is he also thinking about scaling back on the PGA Tour Champions, where he is the all-time leader with 46 victories?

It certainly doesn’t appear so. Prior to the U.S. Senior Open at Newport Country Club in Rhode Island, Langer was asked about the key to his sustained success and he insisted it came from a multitude of factors.

“There’s a lot of things. First of all, you have to be reasonably healthy, because if not, you can’t do what you want to do and can’t swing the way you want to swing,” he said. “I was born with a competitive nature, so I have a healthy drive and live a disciplined life, which probably helps. You need a great support system with coach, manager, caddie, family obviously is even more important, all of that.

“And the willingness to put in the work. I’m 66, and a lot of people say, why don’t you retire? I guess I could, but I love the game of golf and I love to compete, and I’m still good enough to compete and be up there where I think I can win tournaments.”

So at least for now, Langer will stay involved with the senior circuit, where he’s been a high-level performer on since winning Rookie of the Year honors in 2008.

This season, Langer had made the cut in all seven of his Champions starts, and has a pair of top-10 finishes, including a third-place showing at the Principal Charity Classic in June.

“When that changes, when I feel like I’m going to finish in the bottom third of the field every week I compete, then it’s probably time to quit,” he said. “Hopefully, I will know when that is.”

Langer, 66, captured 42 DP World Tour titles (in addition to his three PGA Tour and 46 PGA Tour Champions wins). He was originally planning to make the 2024 Masters his final trip to Augusta National but suffered an Achilles injury in February and has since said 2025 will be his final time playing the Masters.

The senior schedule heats up with two majors in three weeks, starting at Firestone Country Club next week with the Kaulig Companies Championship and Langer is expected to be in the field, if for no other reason than the desire to stay active.

“I don’t drink alcohol at all. I drink a little bit, but very, very little. I don’t smoke. I exercise every day and stretch. I have done so forever since I can remember. I think that certainly helps to be reasonably fit, to have some stamina, and to feel better,” he said. “Just the body functions better when we move the body. If we become too sedentary, sooner or later you’re going to pay the price for it. I talked to my PT, physical therapist, and he said, if you lay two weeks in the hospital, just two weeks, don’t do anything, guess how much strength you lose? 50 percent. I was shocked.

“That only encourages me to do more, do something every day, instead of just laying around for a few days in a row.”
