This year I replaced the old 4hp Yamaha on my 17' sailboat with Torqeedo 1103 long shaft with a remote throttle from EcoFishing. It is wonderful: easy to use, powerful, and quiet! I'm never touching a gas outboard again.

I purchased the Torqeedo for my Bote Rover rather than a gas motor as recommended by Bote. The Torqeedo is perfect. I fish saltwater inlets and Intercoastal waterways where quiet is essential. Fish never know I'm coming. Far more power than I need but better than not enough. Try it, you'll love it!

I installed this motor on a 14' aluminum fishing boat. I was looking for just simple and reliable and this motor delivers. You just slap it on the boat and go, no batteries to wire to, no gas and oil to mix, just quick and easy. It pushes the boat to about 5 mph, which is quite a bit faster than any other trolling motors, it even starts to make a small wake. The battery only lasts about an hour at that speed, but slowing down to 3 mph increases that time to several hours. My one complaint so far, is the motor doesn't indicate which way to turn the control for forward or reverse, so I was trying to figure that out as I approached the dock. I marked with a sharpie until I remember it.

The Torqeedo Travel 1103-C  is a highly efficient 3.0 HP electric outboard motor with extended range.

The top-of-the-line 1103 C model is a new addition to the globally successful Travel series. Featuring a brand-new, ultra-quite direct-drive motor design (33 db), it comes with the high-capacity 915 Wh battery – a range-extending 73% increase in capacity compared to the base model. The 1103 C also delivers 10% more power from 1,000 to 1,100 W, a stronger aluminium pylon for increased protection from impact damage and an upgraded transom mount.

The Travel 1103-C easily propels canoes, kayaks, inflatables and other small boats. The Travel 1103-C will also propel tenders, dinghies and day-sailers up to 1.5 tons, and when it's needed, over long distances, too.

It's also something of an expert when it comes to communication. It discloses its most important information to you, connects with your smartphone and can be charged from a standard power outlet, 12 V connection or from a solar charger.

The Travel 1103-C can now charge other electrical devices for you, as well. The batteries are now equipped with a USB adapter, allowing your mobile phone, laptops and other equipment to share the Travel's abundant battery capacity.

The top-of-the-line 1103 C model is a new addition to the globally successful Travel series. Featuring a new, direct-drive motor design, it is the quietest motor in its class at just 33 dB.  It comes with the high-capacity 915 Wh battery – a range-extending 73% increase in capacity compared to the base model. The 1103 C also delivers 10% more power from 1,000 to 1,100 W, a stronger aluminium pylon for increased protection from impact damage and an upgraded transom mount.  Just like the proven Travel 1003 model, the new 1103 C is suitable for boats up to 1,500 kg, while the smaller Travel 603 model is ideal for powering boats up to 1,000 kg. All Torqeedo Travel motors come with a high-performance lithium-ion battery and a built-in onboard computer.

Torqeedo recommend that if you are using your electric motor in salt water then you should fit a Shaft anode Zn. For your convenience you can select this here as you purchase your new Torqeedo Travel electric outboard.

Range of the torqeedo travel 1103.

Travel time and range depend on the battery. In an example with the Travel 1103 and the 915-Wh battery, we have the following readings:

• At half power, the pleasure of sailing lasts for about 6 hours on the water at a cruising speed of 5.5 km/h (3 knots) and a range of 33km.
• If you plan longer and more comfortable tours on the water, you will even get a lot further with less power. At 1/4 of the power, a speed of 3.7 km/h was reached for 20 hours (2 knots). All in all a range of 74 km (40 nautical miles). And that with only one battery charge.

The Torqeedo TRAVEL 1103 CS features an input power of over 1100 watts and is comparable to a 3 HP petrol outboard engine in terms of propulsive power. Thanks to the on-board computer with GPS-based calculation of the remaining range, a travel guide is always with you.

The new Travel 1103 C top model: Powerful, efficient and quiet as a whisper The new Travel 1103 C top model joins the internationally successful Travel line. It features a brand-new direct drive and powerful 915 Wh battery, which has 73 percent more capacity than the basic model, thus providing more range. In addition, the Travel 1103 C delivers 10% more power (1100 watts), a stronger aluminium pylon for increased protection against impact damage and improved transom mounting. Only the engine noise is reduced, it drops to a whisper-quiet 33 dB. Like the renowned Travel 1003 model, the new propulsion system is suitable for boats up to 1500 kg, the smaller Travel 503 for boats up to 750 kg. All Torqeedo Travel engines are equipped with a high-performance lithium-ion battery and an integrated on-board computer with GPS.

Information on range and speed

When travelling through water, displacement increases power required in proportion to the cube (third power) of the speed. This means that doubling water speed increases the power required eightfold. Conversely, it of course also means that only a slight reduction in speed will increase the range attainable significantly. Simply reducing speed by e.g. half a knot has a considerable effect on the remaining range. Since mental arithmetic to the power of three is quite tricky, the on-board computer of the Cruise constantly calculates the remaining range for you. To do this, it combines the consumption data from the motor with the charge level of the batteries together with the speed over water obtained via GPS. This means you can read the remaining range in real time from the Cruise’s display. Using the TorqTrac App you can even read the remaining range from a map on your smartphone.

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River

A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.

Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.

Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.

An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.

The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry’s wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.

The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.

The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.

Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.

The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.

Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country’s leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.
