Describe a journey that you remember well.

You should say:

  • Where did you go?
  • How did you travel?
  • Why did you go on the journey?

Sample Answer 1

Last year, I had the pleasure of embarking on the most memorable trip of my life. It was a trip from Patiala to Shimla, which is a distance of around 160 miles by automobile. It was my first self-driving travel experience.

My friends called me a week before my 24th birthday to inquire about my plans. We decided to go to Shimla and celebrate my birthday there on the spur of the moment. After completing my driving lessons and acquiring my driver’s license, I advised doing the road trip in our car. So, I requested my father lend me his car.

I was accompanied by four of my closest friends. They were concerned since I had never driven in a steep area before. However, I assured them that the ride would be pleasant. We had no clue about the road conditions while planning the route, and it was made worse by leaving the highway for a time; anyhow, the following 10 kilometers or so were on some of the worst, never-ending roads. As a result, it took us around 4 hours to get to the Shimla hotel we had reserved. Regardless, contrary to my worries, driving on hills was not difficult, and this was the first lesson that gave me the confidence to drive on hills.

Overall, the journey was delightful. We all had a good time on vacation. Fortunately, because it was a holiday, the roads were mostly empty. However, it took a long time to get there since we stopped at numerous places for food and beverages. There was a lot of merriment there, and we weren’t in the mood to leave sooner.

Sample Answer 2

Journeys have always been an enjoyable part of my life. Every trip has taught me something fruitful, and I have become a better person at the end of every trip. Also, by planning and executing random trips, I have enhanced my observation skills to a great extent. The knowledge I have gathered through these trips is tough to accumulate through other means.

So, to tell you about a journey that is still immaculate in my conscious, it is the last travel that I arranged. So, all this while, I wanted to visit secluded and quaint places. However, my previous trip was to Ladakh – one of the dream places of almost every adventure lover.

Initially, I had decided to travel by cab as Ladakh is approximately 800 km from my place. But I changed this decision all because of one video on Instagram. While scrolling through this social media platform, I stumbled upon a video that showcased snow-laden mountains captured from an airplane’s window on the way to Ladakh. The mesmerizing beauty of those mountains compelled me to drop the idea of traveling by cab, and I booked plane tickets.

I am an adventure lover, and Ladakh is one of the prettiest places on the earth. I visited there for its scenic beauty, to try delectable cuisines, relish colorful local festivals, explore gompas and monasteries, and rejuvenate and relax.

Sample Answer 3

Journeys, after all, are always unforgettable. It exposes us to new experiences and allows us to unwind ourselves. I like traveling because it allows me to explore new places and experience new things around the world. However, there are certain travels on which I have had less than good encounters. I would like to discuss one such journey.

I went on a road trip with my friends around three months ago. It was my first extended road trip with my friends, and it was the most unforgettable event of my life. Because my friends and I don’t get to see each other very frequently due to our busy job schedules, we decided to take a long road journey from Punjab to Rajasthan. Ten of our friends decided to come along, so we managed two cars accordingly.

Everyone was requested to arrive at a mutually agreed-upon location on the scheduled day of the voyage. However, due to tremendous traffic congestion that none of us had expected, everyone was an hour late. Thus, our adventure began after considerable hardship. Nevertheless, because of the nature of the trip, it was a joyful and exhilarating experience for me. For a few hours, everything was working well, and everyone was having a great time. We were enjoying our little giggles, and the sight of the road flanked by trees. There was relaxing music playing in the background, and we were enjoying our fullest.

Suddenly, our journey was interrupted by accident. The first car in the lineup came to a complete stop because a youngster was crossing the road in a hurry, and the rest of the cars crashed because they couldn’t control their speed. Everyone was upset and anxious for a few hours. After that, everyone felt sad and worried. After that, the thrill of the trip vanished, and towards the end of the journey, we just hoped to reach our destination safely.

Story Structure: IELTS Speaking Part 2

Posted by David S. Wills | Mar 26, 2017 | IELTS Tips , Speaking | 1

Story Structure: IELTS Speaking Part 2

Being able to tell a story is an important IELTS skill. I don’t mean spinning a fictional tale… You don’t have to be the next J.K. Rowling! But you should be able to talk fluently about your own past on the common IELTS topics – jobs, family, sports, friends, etc.

When you’ll need to tell stories

This is really going to come into play for the IELTS speaking part two. Here, you will be given a cue card with something that you’ll need to describe, and quite often it’s asking you to talk about something from your own past. It might be a person you admired growing up, a place you visited , a treasured memory, or a job you once did. In any case, you need to be able to talk confidently in the past tenses.

How to structure these stories

Of course, you can’t just memorize answers for the IELTS exam. Even if you did manage to memorize a story about a teacher who inspired you and the topic did come up in the test, unless your answer e xactly matched the examiner’s question, it’s going to sound suspicious.

Instead, let’s look at a formula. This doesn’t apply to 100% of IELTS speaking part two questions. However, it does cover most of them – certainly the ones that deal with the past.

Describe a memorable journey you have made. You should say: where you were going how you were travelling why you were making the journey and explain what made the journey so memorable.
I’m going to talk about a trip I took to a small beach town when I was about ten years old. At that time, I was living with my mother and father in a big city, and I had never seen the sea before. I really wanted to visit the seaside because I kept seeing it on TV or reading about it in books, but we didn’t have much money in those days. However, one day my day came home from work and told us that he was taking us to the beach for a weekend trip because he had gotten a bonus. So we set off on the train and I was really excited. I kept asking my mum questions about what it would be like. I could hardly imagine it. When we got there I was overwhelmed. Everything was perfect – the weather, the scenery, the feel of the sand. It was the happiest moment of my life, and in fact it still is. These days I make it a goal to visit the sea once a year, and when I’m older and settled down, I’d love to live in a small house by the beach just like those I saw many years ago.

Why use this structure?

The IELTS speaking part two can be very intimidating. Students have to speak for between one and two minutes and they are only given one minute to prepare. This is not a lot of time to think of a story, even for a native speaker. The best strategy is to speak slowly and confidently, based upon a simple series of notes that outline the structure. If you are able to speak for an average of twenty seconds per point, you can easily get to one and a half minutes – a nice finish time.

Be careful when using this or any pre-arranged structure because it won’t fit all questions, and you obviously need to make sure that you fit all aspects of the question into your answer. However, this does give a nice dramatic flourish.

Cue Card # A journey you made by public transport

Similar Cue Card Topics 1.    Describe a common vehicle in your city. 2.    Describe a kind of public transportation you often use. 3.    Describe a trip you recently had. 4.    Describe a journey a common vehicle in your city. 5.    Describe a kind of public transportation you often you to travel. 6.    Describe a trip you recently had. 7.    Describe a journey you recently had. 8.    Describe a picnic you had in a public place.

You should say:

  •  when and where you went
  •  what kind of transport you used
  •  how was your trip
  • and explain why you chose to use public transportation for this trip.

Sample Answer 1:

Taking trips to all kinds of places is a part of our daily life, whether we travel in our private vehicles or use some kind of public transportation. Of course, as far as I am concerned, I am more comfortable to take my trips on my motorbike when I am travelling short distances. But, when I travel long distances, I usually use public transportation, and today I would like to talk about one such long-distance trips which I took about a few weeks ago.

Anyway, I took the trip to attend a wedding ceremony of one of my cousins who lives about a couple of kilometres away from me in another city. Since it was a long trip, I naturally wanted to use public transportation except, of course, I just couldn’t decide on whether to use a public bus or public train. Buses travel usually faster than train in my country but they don’t usually provide an opportunity to freshen up or eat any kind of food or snacks during the journey. But, on the other hands, even though, trains run a bit slow, they all offer the opportunity for refreshment. In fact, all of the public trains in my country have canteens to offer food for the travellers, and of course, they also have washrooms to freshen up.

So, after considering the pros and cons of using both types of public transportation, I finally decided to make my trip on a public train. Of course, it took me a little longer to arrive at my destination with train, but the trip was comfortable, and relaxing, especially, because of playing some “classical and hit songs” throughout the entire journey.

Anyway, I chose to use public transportation, primarily because it provided more safety and security in my travel. In fact, I didn’t have to worry about getting involved in any kind of unfortunate event or accident. Besides, I found travelling by train more comfortable and relaxing because it provided a much larger space to manoeuvre around when I needed to stretch a little. Finally, I never felt any travel fatigue after arriving at my destination.

Sample Answer 2:

Though I own a car, I often use public transportation. I do so to allow other family members to use my car for their own important tasks and sometimes I use public transportation, like the bus, to travel a long distance, especially to a different city. Some of the remote areas are not quite as easy to travel by cars and for those places, I use public transportation like the rickshaw, taxi or the rented motorbike. One such trip that I remember I took 2 years ago when I visited one of my aunts’ house. My aunt was married to a civil engineer and they had 3 kids. Their living place was kind of a remote area and took almost 10-12 hours to reach. It was the mid-autumn when I had the trip and I alone went there. I had to use 3-4 different public transportation to finally reach my aunt’s house.

I took a bus and it stopped when we reached near a river after 4-5 hours journey. I had to use a boat to pass the river and after that, I took another bus and finally an auto-rickshaw to reach my aunt’s living place.

The trip was a long one and it was neither a very pleasant journey nor a very disturbing one as well. Changing the transportation a few times, carrying two such heavy bags was something that annoyed me. But I enjoyed the natural scenery, a different routine than the usual busy life, scenic beauty on both sides of the road, the beautiful river and the new people and place. I mostly listened to music from my MP3 player and read a magazine on my journey and I enjoyed that also.

I took public transportation mainly for 3 reasons. Firstly, I left it home so that other family members can use it if needed as I would be away for about a week. Secondly, I did not know the exact route to the place I travelled and that’s why it would have been a bit uncertain to take my private car to a route that I have no idea about. Finally, it was a remote area and taking my car would have caused extra tension like parking it, fueling it and that why I preferred to take the journey in public transportation.

Sample Answer 3:

Well, every day I go to college in public transport. According to me, public transportation is safe for long journeys as well as for short visits. But here I would like to talk about a visit which I made via a bus. I explain it briefly. About two months ago, I had made a plan to go to the Golden Temple Amritsar with my two friends. We decided to travel via bus.

According to our plan, we reached the bus station in my hometown Moga. On the bus station, We bought eatable things and beverages to drink. We took a bus in which only a few people were traveling. During this journey, We sit on the same seat on the bus. We shared many views with each other. My one friend who was traveling with us is a very talkative person. He makes each and every moment memorable with his funny and captivating talk. He was doing funny activities on the bus. After some time, When the bus conductor came near to seat, then we got a ticket from him.

When one hour passed during the journey, we ate the food which we carried with us. Then, we reached the city of Amritsar after one hour. We went out of the bus and took a cab to reach GoldenTemple. We went in just ten minutes. We did supplication over there for the goodness of our loving families.

Moreover, I prayed to God for the strong relationship between us three friends. After prayer, we came back to the bus station and took the bus to reach home. Eventually, till the evening, we came back to my hometown. So, that was the time when I went with my friend by bus.

Sample Answer 4:

In our daytoday life we visit many places for various purposes. Sometimes we use our own vehicle and sometimes we use public transport. Normally when I have to go somewhere near then I use car but for distant places I use public transport. Here I am going to talk about a visit for which I used public transport. Actually, last month, I went to Jaipur Rajasthan with my family. This time we used bus for going to Jaipur. There is a tour operator company near my hometown known as Express Travels.

My father booked this tour through them. There were 12 other families with us. It was vacation time and so children were also there with their parents. We boarded the bus at 7 am. On the way we enjoyed a lot. I made many friends and we played antakshri.

The bus made three halts on the way to Jaipur. We straightened our legs and had refreshments at those stops. The bus was an AC coach and was very comfortable. There was also an LCD in the bus and we saw the movie Sargi. We reached Jaipur at 7 pm. We stayed at hotel Gangaur which was a very nice hotel. We saw the Amer Fort, Hawa Mahal, The City Palace and many other places. One whole day we had reserved for shopping.

My mother bought some Jaipuri quilts and I bought some lakh jewellery. As it was a package holiday, we enjoyed with the other families and made many friends. I still have good friends from that trip and we are in touch with each other through facebook.

The essay mimics Pittman’s travel itinerary during her journey in Europe. She includes all the trip details from the first to the last day and makes the readers feel as if they’re traveling with them. Pittman also offers some travel tips to help anyone who wants to visit Europe on a budget. These tips include staying with friends and relatives and taking comfortable train rides despite long distances.

“With proper planning, everything else seems effortless. You need to consider all factors when planning in order for you to enjoy a successful, stress-free adventure.”

The author believes that the primary purpose of traveling is to relax and have fun. They use the essay to teach how to plan car trips properly. Travelers must learn to budget and estimate expenses, including accommodation, gas, activities, and food. Picking a transportation means is also crucial as one needs to consider factors such as capacity, range, and utility.

“Although things didn’t go how I planned I’m still in college bettering myself and furthering my education. Anything is possible with a good support system and positive mindset.”

The essay narrates how the author’s journey into adulthood becomes a mini-vacation in Georgia after their top university rejects their enrollment. Ultimately, the author receives a full scholarship to a university closer to home.

“All people have the same journey to take – their life. As well as in the other journeys, there may be some inconveniences, disappointments and joys, and a lot depends on how we plan this particular journey and what attitude we develop towards it.”

In this essay, the writer shares that the best way to go on a life journey is with the most joy and minor damage you can endure. It’s constant work to continuously improve one’s life while developing positive qualities and thinking. But in doing so, you’ll have a solid foundation to achieve what you want out of life. However, the author still reminds the readers that they should always be ready to face unexpected events and deal with them in the best way possible.

“These days, people prefer traveling via airplanes because it is time-saving. But going by plane gets boring and monotonous. Train journeys are a relief from the monotony.”

For Prasanna, whether it’s a short or extended tour, a train journey offers an exciting travel experience. She talks about the local and regional trains in India, which are often overcrowded but still used by many as they are the cheapest, safest, and fastest mode of transport in the country. She also mentions that you’ll never get hungry when riding their local trains because of the vendors who sell Indian delicacies.

7 Prompts for Essays About Journeys

It’s a trip when a person travels from one point to another without any transfers. Meanwhile, a journey is a more extended voyage that includes transfers and several trips. IELTS Speaking Band 9 Sample Answer:

So I’d like to talk about a journey that I took when I was a little kid. Together with my family, I went to the Grand Canyon, which is a popular tourist attraction. It’s a national park in the United States. And I know we traveled by car. Umm, I can’t remember how long the trip was but I’d guess it was about a week. And the reason we went on this trip? Well, it was probably because my parents wanted to take me for a nice trip, a nice family trip.

That’s a common thing to do, um, with some families. But the reason I remember this journey so well is not because the Grand Canyon was amazing. I’m sure it was. But there was something else that happened while I was on this journey. And that was…on the trip…on our way to the Grand Canyon, um, we stopped by a book store. And, you know, I liked reading books a little bit when I was a kid so um, my I think my mom recommended this particular book to me. And I don’t remember what it was right now but we bought the book because she said “Oh this is a good idea. You might want to read this book.”

And so, she gave it to me and in the car, probably for about four hours or five hours, instead of looking out at all of the scenery and at all of these new places we were driving to, I just had my head in my book. I don’t think I looked up at all and I just read the book from cover to cover for like four or five hours…just sitting in the car in the back seat instead of looking at whatever beautiful nature they wanted me to look at. I know they gave me a little bit of a hard time about it, but, hey, you know, um, it was a memorable journey for sure (be)cause even to this day I still remember reading that book in the car and really enjoying it and having a really good time with it. So yeah, that’s my story.

Is it ok to use transitional phrases when answering each question such as “My initial point would obviously be …” or “Moving onto the next area of when I traveled I remember …”? Does it sound like a native speaker?

September 22, 2018 at 9:47 am

I don’t think these kinds of phrases are common among native speakers. That said, I doubt they will lower your score and could help if they’re used correctly.

Model answer:

I have made many journeys in my life due to various purposes. For this topic card, I’m going to talk about a journey that I made by car because I recall it for the wonderful experience and fun I got during this journey.

I, along with two of my cousins and a friend, went to Chattagram, the business capital, and the place of the scenic beauty of my country about two and a half years ago. It was just a last-minute plan for us to decide to take a car instead of travelling by train. All four of us had received our driving permit and owned personal vehicles. So, we decided that we would rather drive there.

It took us around 12 hours for us to reach Chattagram from my residence in Sylhet. In fact, we could have reached there earlier, but being careful drivers we drove slowly bearing in mind the safety of each other. I never overlapped the limit of 80 kilometers during this long drive. In addition, we had two breaks on the freeway which also prolonged our journey.

My friend Shakeel and my cousins Reesah and Farah accompanied me on the journey. All of them are my childhood friends too and we have studied and graduated from the same university together. We also live in the same town. Besides, our families also are on good terms with theirs. Thus, I was certain that if I take them on this journey, it will be a journey worthy of remembrance. We did lots of fun on the way to Chattagram. We took selfies on our smartphone and had delicious home-made lunch prepared by Reesah and Farah. We sang songs loudly and smiled a lot. The wonderful sceneries around us and our favourite music in the car made the whole journey more thrilling and enjoyable. It was really a day of excitement and enjoyment.

As far as the reason goes, I decided to make this journey by car because my companions thought that it would be more amusing and relaxing. Not only that, but the air-tickets were also expensive for us and we did not want to spend a large sum of money just for a couple of hours’ flight. I believe it was the best decision to make and it proved to be so.

Ielts cue cards – describe a journey you went on, follow-up questions.

  • What are the importance of traveling?
  • What type of places do you recommend people to visit on vacation?
  • What places do you want to visit in future? Why?

Possible answer the above speaking cue cards

I like visiting famous places and whenever I get a vacation, I try to visit new places or places that I have heard about. One such trip that I took with one of my friends was a journey to Holland. I would like to talk about this tour to Holland that we took 2 years age.

Both of us (me and my friend) wanted to visit Holland and specifically Amsterdam, Hague and Rotterdam very much because we saw pictures and heard stories from friends about how beautiful and wonderful the place is. So finally we applied for the visa, bought plane tickets, booked a hotel, packed our bags and our trip began.

We spent a lot of time before our holiday, researching of all the interesting places to visit and all the sights to see. So we went to Risks museum, Van Gogh museum, Amstell Beer museum, took a romantic sunset cruise in the water channels, drove to Volendam, a small prettiest fisherman village, visited a cheese farm. We went to Rotterdam, which is the architecture city of Holland that stimulates innovation. We enjoyed the architectures and building there as much as we did walking in the neat roads and besides the beaches. Visiting the famous Anne Frank house was an exciting moment for me. I’ve read the Anne Frank’s Diary in my early childhood and witnessing the place was very much exciting.

Every evening we took long walks along the channels, resting in small gardens, which Amsterdam has a lot of. Street artists were performing everywhere and a lot of people came to watch their show.

We enjoyed very much everything we did and especially in such a beautiful country. Having my friend by my side on this trip made it even more fun. Since we have never been to Holland, everything we saw and did seemed interesting and completely new to us. The people, their way of interpreting their culture attracted us very much. Before leaving the place, both of us agreed that the place is worth visiting and someday we would come back to re-explore it.

Tips for answering this cue card question

You are free to talk about any journey you are comfortable to talk about. It can be a journey to another city of your country, to a historic or tourist place, a foreign country or to a relative or friend’s house to a different location. While talking about this cue card, take some notes of a journey you remember particularly where you went, what was the purpose of going there, how you traveled there, what you saw on your way and at the place, what you did, how long you stayed, whom you met there, who you went there with.

If you liked the journey tell about some exciting things you watched and did there than the usual things you do. For instance: you can mention some of the great places you visited there, the sightseeing of the journey. Do not focus too much on the place you went rather emphasis what happened on the way. This cue card is a bit different that ‘Describe a place you have visited’ where you would mostly describe things you watched and did on the place but for this cue card you should mostly tell about your experience during the journey.

Some key points to mention for this cue card

  • You had the plan to visit this place for a long time and when you had the journey, you had been excited about the whole thing.
  • You would meet a friend or relative after a long and that made you feel good.
  • You have some memories related to this place and visiting there was a good experience for you.
  • If this is a foreign country, say that you had a longing to visit this country.
  • The weather was comfortable and there was no interruption on the way.
  • You had friends with you and you enjoyed their company as well as the vehicles.
  • This was not a typical journey that you usually take.
  • The natural beauty surrounding the roads was charming.
  • You observed some different custom and culture there.

Cue Card # 122: Describe a journey that you remember well

Ielts cue card/ candidate task card # 122, describe a journey [e.g. by car, plane, boat] that you remember well..

You should say:

  • where you went
  • how you travelled
  • why you went on the journey

and explain why you remember this journey well.

[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.]

Model Answer:

I have been fortunate enough to take several journeys before, both as an adult as well as a child, in my life that I remember well. But, in my humble opinion, a boat journey probably is the most fascinating of all. I would like to talk about one such fascinating boat journey which I took as a young college boy.

Anyway, my country is crisscrossed with many, many rivers. These rivers remain full of water and calm during the month of October (as the rainy season is over by then), and that’s when I and a couple of my friends decided to take a boat journey from one town to another which was divided by a large river. We decided to undertake this journey purely because we wanted to experience something new in our life.

By the way, it was about a couple of hours’ journey, and since none of us really had any experience of travelling such long distance in a boat, even though, we were naturally very excited, we were a bit nervous also at the same time. But, as we started our journey at around 8 in the morning, our professional boatman assured us that he would take us on the other side of the river without any troubles whatsoever.

We took an audio cassette player (from the old days) with us, and we also took a number of our favourite songs from some of the best singers in my country. We took this decision so that we would spend the beautiful morning singing, gossiping, hearing songs and seeing the beauty of a full river under the beautiful morning sunlight.

Anyway, I remember this journey well because it was for the first time that I could see a group of fishermen catching fish, live and from up close. In fact, I had never seen so many fishes jumping in the fishing net as if they were dancing in the water to impress us. Besides, the experience of watching the little waves of transparent water, rippling and shining the plate of silver in the river, is just too unique for me.

Sample Answer 1: A Trip to the Mountains

Introduction:

One journey that remains vivid in my memory is my trip to the Himalayas two years ago. It was a blend of breathtaking landscapes, challenging treks, and an unforgettable adventure that taught me resilience and the beauty of nature.

The Journey:

Our journey began with an early morning flight to the nearest airport, followed by a long drive to the base camp. The road twisted through lush forests and over ancient, creaky bridges spanning bottomless ravines, with the promise of adventure in the air.

Significant Moments:

The most memorable part was the trek to the summit of a lesser-known peak. It was grueling, with steep ascents and biting cold winds. However, the view from the top was unparalleled - a panoramic vista of snow-capped peaks under the golden light of dawn.

Conclusion:

This journey was not just a physical challenge; it was a pilgrimage of the soul. The magnificence of the mountains, the serene beauty, and the test of endurance have left a lasting impression on me.

Follow-up Questions and Answers:

Q1: What was the most challenging part of your journey?

A1: The most challenging part was the trek to the summit. The steep paths and altitude sickness tested our limits, but the reward of the view and the sense of accomplishment was worth every step.

Q2: How did this journey change you?

A2: This journey instilled in me a deeper appreciation for nature and the importance of preserving our planet. It also taught me resilience, the power of perseverance, and how to face challenges with a positive spirit.

Q3: Would you undertake a similar journey again?

A3: Absolutely! Despite the challenges, the sense of adventure and the beauty of the natural world are too compelling. I look forward to exploring more hidden treasures of our planet.

Q4: What advice would you give to someone planning a similar trip?

A4: Prepare well, both physically and mentally. Research the area, pack appropriately, and be ready for unexpected challenges. Most importantly, keep an open mind and enjoy every moment of the experience.

Q5: How do you think such journeys contribute to personal growth?

A5: Such journeys push you out of your comfort zone, teaching you about resilience, self-reliance, and the value of experiences over material possessions. They expand your horizons, make you more adaptable, and give you a fresh perspective on life.

Sample Answer 2: A Solo Trip to a New City

Another journey that stands out in my memory is my first solo trip to Paris. It was a dive into the unknown, an exploration of culture, art, and self-discovery that remains one of my most cherished experiences.

I landed in Paris with a mix of excitement and nervousness, armed with my modest French and an adventurous spirit. The city greeted me with its iconic blend of history and modern vibrancy, from the Gothic cathedrals to the bustling cafes.

Navigating the city alone, I discovered not just the famous landmarks but also hidden gems - quaint bookshops, local markets, and stunning street art. The highlight was a serene evening spent by the Seine, watching the city lights dance on the water.

This journey was a leap into independence and confidence. Paris, with its beauty and challenges, taught me the joy of solitude, the richness of diverse cultures, and the infinite possibilities of life.

Q1: What did you learn about yourself during this trip?

A1: I learned that I'm more resourceful and adaptable than I thought. Facing language barriers and navigating a foreign city solo enhanced my problem-solving skills and boosted my confidence in unfamiliar situations.

Q2: What was the biggest takeaway from your trip to Paris?

A2: My biggest takeaway was the importance of embracing new experiences and the beauty of stepping out of my comfort zone. It opened my eyes to different cultures and the value of exploring the world on my own terms.

Q3: How did you prepare for your solo trip?

A3: I did extensive research on the city, from must-see attractions to local etiquette. I also made sure to have all necessary documents and a well-planned itinerary, while leaving room for spontaneous exploration.

Q4: What advice would you give to someone planning their first solo trip?

A4: Start with a place that genuinely interests you, and do your homework. Stay safe, but don’t be afraid to venture off the beaten path. Most importantly, be open to new experiences - they’re often the most rewarding.

Q5: How do solo journeys differ from traveling with others?

A5: Solo journeys offer a unique freedom and flexibility that you don't always get when traveling with others. They encourage self-reliance and introspection, providing a deeply personal experience that can lead to significant personal growth.

Describe a journey that you remember well

9IELTS

Describe a journey that you remember well.

You should say:

  • where you went
  • how you travelled
  • why you went on that journey

and explain why you remember this journey so well.

[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you’re going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.]

Model Answer 1: I have been lucky to have a number of memorable journeys over the years. So, thank you very much for offering me this great opportunity to share the experience of one of those journeys which I probably would never forget.

This journey, one of the most memorable ones of my life, took place when I just started my university, and I needed to visit my youngest uncle at a city, far away from my hometown, where he just had started his first job. So, naturally, I was quite excited. The excitement grew even bigger when one of my elder cousins, who also was travelling with me, informed me that we were actually going to make the journey with a high-speed train which just had started operating from my home town only a few weeks ago.

We were told that it was going to be a 6 to 7 hours journey and that train would travel, nonstop, at a speed of 200 kilometers per hour. So, it was a whole new experience for me, and I just couldn’t wait to board the train as soon as I arrived at the station. By the way, my cousin very smartly had selected a couple of window seats at the front of the brand new train, so we both knew that it was going to be a great experience, and it indeed was as the train started to run like a bullet with a whistle within seconds of starting our journey. The objects outside the train felt like they were just coming at our sight and vanishing like some ghosts within a fraction of a second.

Anyway, I remember every minute of this journey so well, mainly because I never really travelled on a train that ran so fast and furiously. I remember it also because the service on that train was awesome. Finally, I also tried some of the most delicious foods I have ever eaten, and that too at an affordable price!

Sample Answer 2: I went to the USA last month to attend a conference arranged for health journalists. It was an interesting journey and most importantly, my first flight out of my country, Greece. I was amazed by the journey and the experience will be memorable always. This cue card appears exciting and I will describe the event in brief now.

I travelled by aeroplane and also used some other local transports in the USA. But the journey by aeroplane was the most impressive one in my life. It took around 11 hours to reach the USA from Greece. I reached the airport in my private car and then boarded in the aeroplane. I was too excited that I could not sleep the entire time. Initially, I felt a bit of uncomfortable as it was my first air ride too. But gradually I coped with the situation. I had to visit the country for some official purposes. I am a senior reporter of health in a national newspaper of Greece. A conference of the journalists dealing with health issues was supposed to take place in the USA. My office authority selected me to join the conference. I was chosen for my extraordinary performance in reporting about the health issues of the country.

I can recall every detail of the journey. In fact, I was really happy to have the chance to visit America and the flight was really enjoyable. I joined at the conference and presented a paper as well which was appreciated heavily by the other participants at the conference. Moreover, I also received a prestigious certificate for participating in this international conference. I had visited in different parts of New York, where the conference took place. Considering everything, it was a great trip in my life and I will never forget my experience from this trip.

More Ideas to talk about this Cue Card/ Candidate Task Card topic:

Topic: describe a journey that you remember well..

1. I will always remember the boat journey I made on the Ganges in India. The journey took us to another ghat (port) which is a few kilometres away from where we started. And some of my friends accompanied me on this trip. It was an aimless journey on a moonlit night. But most of us wanted to enjoy the moon from the Ganges. The memories are still bright and I can see the bright moon after closing my eyes.

2. The last train journey to Moscow from Saint Petersburg was a wonderful one. I travelled by train and the journey was highly comfortable one. I had to visit Moscow for some official purposes. I attended a couple of meetings on the same day. I can remember the journey very well for some reasons. I took my seat beside a window and enjoyed the natural views. Moreover, I had some talks with co-passengers and has spent a good time with them.

3. I could not believe that a business class journey was so comfortable. I made it last month on a local bus. I went to Edinburg from London. It was a solo trip and solely intended to enjoy a bus ride. In fact, I had made a plan long ago to make the journey and completed last weekend. The entire journey was thrilling and filled with joy. I rode on the bus in time and reached at the exact time. I also met some people during the ride who sat beside me on the bus. Overall, it was a memorable journey.

4. I went on a trip with my family in Singapore. It was not a long journey. And we landed in Singapore earlier than we e4xpected. All the family members were present during the journey. We all wanted to have a vacation in Singapore and also meet some relatives there. The journey was memorable as we all had great fun. The entire vacation was filled with joy and delight. I felt sad while returning back to Hong Kong.

5. Group journeys are not always interesting as people of different classes and mentality get together. But I am lucky in that sense. We went to visit Mount Fuji and it was a mixed journey. The group has used different types of vehicles and even walked on feet. I wanted to see the mountain from a close distance and so, I became a part of the group. It was an interesting journey and an advantageous experience for me.

IELTS Speaking Questions and Sample Answers

These IELTS speaking questions and answers are based on an IELTS speaking test Australia recently.

IELTS Speaking Part 1

Do you like to draw.

Not now, in fact I can’t really remember the last time I drew anything, but when I was a child I used to love drawing.

Are drawings important in people’s lives?

I think it depends on the individual, for some people, yes, they’re important and for others, well maybe no, or not so important.

I think they’re probably more important for children – because they normally do a lot more drawing than adults.

Is it hard to draw?

No, but it’s hard to draw well – you need to have talent to draw really well, and you need to practice a lot.

Can you tell me how you spend your birthdays?

Well, normally I don’t do anything special, maybe go out and meet some friends, go for dinner or a couple of drinks. Every year seems to be something different, so it depends where I am and who I’m spending time with.

Please, describe your most interesting birthday.

I think it was the first year I spent living abroad, in a different culture, and they made a really big deal of it.

As I said, I don’t usually do anything very special, but they thought it was very important and made a big fuss about it all and arranged a party with lots of people and everything.

Do all your friends know when your birthday is?

No, some do, but some don’t ... a little strange I know.

IELTS Speaking Part 2

Cue Card Topic

Describe An interesting journey when you were young

I remember my most interesting journey, when I was about six years old, with my parents. We travelled by car up north and the thing that I remember most was the amazing scenery which was quite different from where we used to live. I couldn’t really remember seeing big mountains before that trip, but the ones I saw were so huge and steep that I recall being seriously impressed by them.

I also saw some amazing rivers running down through the mountains and I can remember there was a waterfall, with the water cascading down the side of one of the mountains, and I also saw a lot of animals that you wouldn’t normally see living in a city.

It was a long trip, I seem to remember it took most of the day, although we stopped every now and then to take a break and have something to eat before continuing.

I remember that for a lot of the time I just sat in the car and my face was like pushed up to the window just watching all these things go past as we travelled along the road.

Every time I thought I had seen the tallest mountain – we would go round the next bend in the road and there was an even taller mountain right in front.

As we went up the mountain road you could see right down into the valley below and I remember feeling a little afraid because I thought if the car fell off the road then we would drop all the way down to the bottom – it was a long way down. It’s funny thinking about it now.

I guess that particular journey was the most interesting journey I have ever made because it was the first time I really remember seeing really different landscape from the normal things I would see where I grew up – so it was really impressive and I can still remember the colours and the different smells in the air as we drove along the road.

Looking back on it now, yes, it was my most interesting journey when I was a child.

IELTS Speaking Part 3

Discussion Questions

How can people travel around your country?

There are all the normal forms of transport, you know, cars, buses, trains, airplanes. I suppose if you were thinking about visiting various different places then a car might be the easiest and most convenient way of doing it. Then you could stop and start and go wherever and whenever you want without any problems.

Using the train is quite fast, but they’re only between the major cities, so if you want to go anywhere else, you’d probably have to get a bus, and airplanes are quite expensive, and again they only fly between the largest cities, so if you want to see the country, using a car is probably your best bet.

Can you compare the prices of different types of transportation?

Well, that’s quite easy, flying is the most expensive; then comes the car, if you take into account fuel and maintenance etc., and then the bus, and the most economic would be using a bicycle, which is actually becoming really popular again here at the moment, because fuel is so expensive and there’s so much traffic congestion.

Which type of transportation will be used the most in the future?

Well, I think the way things are developing, we’ll continue to use cars, but as we’ve already seen - the cars we’ll be using in the future will be very different from what we’ve been used to so far.

We can already see the beginning of ‘smart cars’ and eco-friendly cars. They’re smaller, cleaner, hybrid and much less wasteful with fuel - I’m sure that we’ll be seeing a lot more of them in the future.

What benefits do people get from travelling?

It depends where they travel to. For example, you could say that there’s very little benefit from travelling to work everyday – apart from working and getting paid.

However, if we’re talking about travelling abroad or visiting a place you wouldn’t normally go to, then I think that travelling can have a lot of benefits - it can be fun, interesting, relaxing and provide a welcome break from just doing the same old things over and over again.

Certainly, travelling abroad makes you appreciate what’s good and bad back home, and also broadens your perspective on life, culture and such things – so it’s quite an experience.

How would you answer this IELTS speaking test question about an intersting journey?

  • Which childhood journey do you remember the most?
  • Why was the journey special?
  • What's your best memory from that journey?

Bài mẫu 1 – Bali

I’d like to talk about a journey that I took a few years ago to the beautiful island of Bali, Indonesia. I traveled there with a group of close friends, and we had an unforgettable time exploring the island’s stunning natural scenery and rich cultural heritage .

We flew from our home country to Bali, and upon arrival, we hired a driver to take us around the island. We spent our first few days lounging on the gorgeous beaches of Kuta and Seminyak, soaking up the sun and enjoying the local cuisine.

One of the highlights of our trip was a visit to the Tegalalang Rice Terrace, which offered breathtaking views of the lush green landscape and traditional Balinese farming practices. We also explored the town of Ubud, which is known for its vibrant arts and culture scene. We visited a number of galleries and artisan workshops, where we saw firsthand how Balinese artists create their beautiful works of art.

I remember this journey so well because it was a truly eye-opening experience for me. I had never been to Asia before, and I was blown away by the incredible beauty and diversity of the island. From the vibrant culture to the stunning landscapes, Bali offered something new and exciting around every corner.

Additionally, traveling with close friends made the experience all the more memorable. We shared many laughs and adventures together, and I’ll always cherish the memories we made on that trip. Overall, my journey to Bali was an incredible experience that I’ll never forget.

I would like to talk about a journey that I took to Singapore a few years ago. I traveled to Singapore with my family for a short vacation. We flew from our home country to Changi Airport in Singapore, which is known for its efficiency and cleanliness.

During our stay, we visited a number of tourist attractions around the city. One of the highlights was the Marina Bay Sands, which is a famous landmark in Singapore that features a stunning infinity pool overlooking the city skyline. We also visited the Gardens by the Bay, which is a beautiful botanical garden that showcases a diverse range of flora and fauna .

Another memorable experience was visiting the famous hawker centers in Singapore, where we got to sample a wide variety of local dishes. We tried everything from chicken rice to chili crab, and everything was mouth-watering !

I remember this journey well because Singapore is such a unique and vibrant city. It’s a fascinating mix of modernity and tradition, and there’s always something new and exciting to discover. From the stunning architecture to the scrumptious food, I was constantly impressed by everything that Singapore had to offer. I mean, the gorgeous landscapes never cease to amaze me .

In short, my journey to Singapore was an indelible experience that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a unique and exciting travel destination.

Guardians make Aussie star Bazzana No. 1 overall pick

Mandy Bell

If you’re trying to describe the type of hitter the Guardians prefer to have in their organization, you’ll probably think of a gritty, versatile player with elite contact ability, off-the-charts plate discipline and some potential for power.

That’s why Travis Bazzana and Cleveland are a match made in heaven.

  • Bazzana comes from a land Down Under to make Draft history

The Guardians selected the Oregon State second baseman with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft on Sunday. The selection marks two firsts -- the first No. 1 pick in Cleveland's franchise history and the first Australian-born player to be selected No. 1 overall.

  • Every No. 1 overall Draft pick in MLB history

“We view him to be a dynamic player,” Guardians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said. “We think he’s got a chance to impact the game in a variety of ways.”

  • Get to know MLB's No. 1 Draft pick Travis Bazzana

The Guardians added to their Draft haul by selecting prep right-hander Braylon Doughty out of Chaparral High School (California) with the No. 36 overall pick in Competitive Balance Round A. They then took NC State catcher Jacob Cozart at No. 48 overall in the second round.

  • Guards add prep pitcher, college catcher with 'ability to thrive'

A 21-year-old native of Hornsby, Australia, Bazzana is a five-tool player and arguably the most talented prospect in this year's Draft, befitting his status as MLB.com’s No. 1 Draft prospect . Here’s why the Guardians thought he was the perfect pick:

Contact ability

Bazzana was offered a contract by the Tigers at age 16, but he chose to bet on himself by taking the college route to boost his stock. To say that gamble paid off would be an understatement.

In 2022, he was named a First Team Freshman All-American by the likes of Collegiate Baseball, Perfect Game and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), thanks to his .902 OPS. The next year, he hit a team-high .374 and was a Collegiate Baseball Second Team All-American.

Bazzana’s junior season was the best of all, as he finished with a preposterous .407/.568/.911 batting line, finishing second nationally in OPS behind Georgia’s Charlie Condon and being a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award, which Condon won .

We're bananas for Bazzana. 🍌 With the first pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, we have selected 2B Travis Bazzana from Oregon State. #ForTheLand pic.twitter.com/pptQXhMQoq — Cleveland Guardians (@CleGuardians) July 14, 2024

Plate discipline

Bazzana had 180 walks to 146 strikeouts in his three collegiate seasons, including 76 walks this past year with just 37 strikeouts in 60 games. There’s nothing else we need to discuss here.

Power potential

Bazzana’s 45 homers in his three years with Oregon State are the most in school history. He had 28 in 60 games this past year.

Only one Australian-born player in MLB history has more than 30 home runs (Dave Nilsson, who hit 105 in his eight-year career), and according to Baseball Australia , only 38 Aussies have appeared in an MLB game. It seems safe to say that if all goes according to plan, Bazzana could etch his name in some history books.

Athleticism

Though he grew up in a country much more known for cricket, soccer and rugby -- all of which Bazzana played at Turramurra High School , along with track and field and basketball -- baseball was what he loved most, as he quickly took off as an elite prospect . Seeking the best competition, he played some games in the professional Australian Baseball League (ABL) against people twice his age while he was still in high school.

But clearly, the experience he had from playing other sports has helped him become such an athletic baseball player that the Guardians are confident he could move all over the diamond defensively, if they’d eventually choose to do so.

Over the last few years, each young prospect who made his Major League debut with the Guardians has had the same gritty style of play. They hustle. They embrace a small-ball approach. They have a never-say-die attitude. It’s exactly the type of team Bazzana wanted to join.

Beyond the sheer numbers, what makes Bazzana “the most interesting man in college baseball” according to his agent, Chase Brewer, is his analytical mindset. For example, during his first year at OSU, he conducted research that showed that his chase rate was significantly higher in hitter-friendly counts, leading to his OBP jumping from .423 as a freshman to .500 as a sophomore.

Dude brings it all to the table, and we've got quite the appetite. 🍽️ #ForTheLand pic.twitter.com/TMZuw7xpJG — Cleveland Guardians (@CleGuardians) July 14, 2024

In 2023, Bazzana delivered a 90-minute presentation to Oregon State’s pitchers on what pitches they should be throwing in certain situations. That same season, he reached out to conference rival Rodney Green of Cal for advice on his “walking leadoff” tactic -- one which led to Bazzana finishing with a school-record 36 steals in 2023.

“I always was very competitive growing up,” Bazzana said. “I just always wanted to understand things a little bit deeper and never miss on having that edge.”

It’s a mindset he’s seen reflected in the Guardians’ organization. It’s a mindset this team clearly was attracted to. And now, the two are set to work together to make sure their first No. 1 overall pick is a success story.

“They’re young. They play the game with fire,” Bazzana said. “A lot of these things tick boxes in my head and make me really excited to be a Guardian.”

Yankees’ carlos rodon can’t avoid another early exit despite fixing first-inning woes.

BALTIMORE — Carlos Rodon finally made the necessary adjustment on Sunday to avoid his first-inning woes.

But the left-hander was still not fully able to pitch like the Yankees need him to.

Rodon gave up only two runs but lasted just four innings because of a high pitch count before the Yankees fell to the Orioles 6-5 in brutal fashion at Camden Yards.

Having been hurt recently by his early dependence on his fastball and slider — leading to a 9.00 ERA in the first inning entering Sunday — Rodon mixed his pitches from the start against the Orioles.

He did not throw a fastball until his 12th pitch of the game and only threw four heaters (compared to eight sliders, three curveballs and two change-ups) in a 1-2-3, 17-pitch first inning.

Yankees starting pitcher Carlos Rodon lasted only four innings because of a high pitch count (98) against the Orioles on Sunday.

“It was a little bizarre at first, but just wanted to show I could throw sliders and breaking balls and show the fastball late,” Rodon said. “Got some swing and miss on some fastball [after] showing that breaking stuff earlier.”

The problem on Sunday came in the next three frames as the Orioles forced him to throw 81 pitches from the second through fourth innings and 98 overall.

One of those was a 1-2 slider over the plate that Gunnar Henderson crushed for a two-run homer.

“Obviously wanted to go deeper in the game there with the stuff I had, but they had some good at-bats, they had some long at-bats,” Rodon said. “Just can be better with the breaking stuff in the zone and then getting ahead and limiting the pitch count.”

Jose Trevino on Sunday was diagnosed with a Grade 2 quad strain that will cost him at least a few weeks on the injured list .

“It’ll be some time,” manager Aaron Boone said.

The catcher, who suffered the injury while sliding into home plate in the ninth inning of Friday’s win , received a PRP injection Sunday to help with his recovery.

Yankees' Jose Trevino injures his leg while sliding into home plate to score on an RBI single hit by Juan Soto during the ninth inning of a baseball game against the Baltimore Orioles.

In the meantime, the Yankees will have a steady dose of Austin Wells starting behind the plate, but the defensively gifted Carlos Narvaez, called up on Saturday to replace Trevino, will also see some time.

Giancarlo Stanton will not return to the Yankees’ lineup immediately after the All-Star break, but he might not be far off.

The slugger, out since June 22 with a hamstring strain that he expected to sideline him for around four weeks, has advanced to running the bases and hitting and could be “really close” to being ready to play when the Yankees start the second half on Friday, Boone said.

The club has not yet determined whether Stanton will go on a rehab assignment before returning.

The Yankees are giving Scott Effross more time to continue his buildup from Tommy John and back surgery, returning him from his rehab assignment Sunday, reinstating him from the 60-day IL and optioning him to Triple-A.

Effross, who has not pitched since the end of the 2022 regular season, made his ninth rehab appearance on Sunday.

If healthy and pitching like he is capable, Effross could give the Yankees bullpen an important boost in the second half.

To make room for Effross on the 40-man roster, the Yankees designated Cody Morris for assignment.

The righty swingman, acquired for Estevan Florial in December, had a 4.25 at Triple-A.

The Yankees’ rotation out of the break will tentatively go Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes, Marcus Stroman, Rodon and Luis Gil.

The rearranged order will allow Cole, who missed the first three months of the season, to maximize his second half while giving Gil, who has already thrown a career-high 102 ¹/₃ innings, to get more of a breather.

After the game, the Yankees optioned infielder Jorbit Vivas to Triple-A.

The prospect was called up on Friday to replace J.D. Davis, but did not get into any games as his MLB debut will have to wait.

Davis is eligible to be activated off the IL when the second half starts on Friday.

Orioles starter Dean Kremer hit Aaron Judge on the elbow with a 94 mph fastball to begin his at-bat in the first inning, which could have been retaliation for Clay Holmes beaning Heston Kjerstad on Friday night. Either way, the plunking did not incite any fireworks from either dugout.

JT Brubaker, who was nearing the end of a rehab assignment coming back from Tommy John surgery, exited Thursday’s start after one inning with an oblique injury.

Boone said he did not think it was “real significant,” but Brubaker has been shut down for now, taking away a potential depth starting option.
