DC-based indie soul band Oh He Dead has detailed the arrival of their eagerly anticipated third studio album, Ugly, due via their own Wally Baba Records on Friday, August 23. Pre-orders are available now.

The “shadow side” and follow-up to last year’s acclaimed Pretty, Ugly is heralded by the release of the album’s provocative first single, “Strange Love,” available everywhere now. A blast of technicolor on a wave of sultry synths, the track is told from the POV of a sex worker who has fallen in love with her john.

“My favorite artists are still Sade, Kings of Leon, and Stevie Nicks,” says Oh He Dead frontwoman CJ Johnson. “Combined they have the rasp, the sexiness, and the storytelling. That is what I aim to be myself: a raspy, sexy, storyteller.”

“Strange Love” is one of the new songs Oh He Dead performs on their Audiotree performance . The appearance also features two other songs off of the soon-to-be-released Ugly: “Is It My Love,” and “The Foreigner.” Audiotree called the performance “a firecracker explosion of euphoric pop, the likes of which you’ve never seen.”

The origins of Oh He Dead run deep, forged from the years-long relationship between frontwoman CJ Johnson and manager/collaborator Claire Newbegin which started when the latter taught Johnson in high school history and musical theater. “Whether as Rizzo in Grease or Maureen in Rent, she was just a forcefield,” Newbegin says. “By the time she graduated, I’m pretty sure the whole school knew she was going to be a rock star of sorts.”

Oh He Dead rounded out over the ensuing years, adding Alex Salser (guitar), Adam Ashforth (drums), Piano Whitman (keys), John Daise (bass), and Colin Sidley (bass). The band officially broke through in 2018 after recording the groovy “Lonely Sometimes” at Salser’s studio, The Lily Pad, located in a converted barn in the wilds of Virginia. After submitting the video to NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest, the track went viral, attracting fans far afield of their beloved DC. Their self-titled debut album followed that same year, introducing the band with several songs Johnson wrote while still in high school.

The close-knit crew developed further by playing live as often as possible, winning over audiences across the country with their contagious joy and Johnson’s powerful voice and on-stage presence. Pretty arrived in 2023, earning national acclaim for a soulful approach that fuses pain and joy into a sound as smooth and lux as leather, but also rich with levity like a feather in flight. Those same contrasts and contradictions that fuel their music are perhaps best summed up by the origin of the band’s distinctive moniker. When asked what happened to a cheating boy who was shot by his lover in a song of hers, Johnson responded bluntly, “Oh, he dead.”

A suite of songs that encompasses everything from death to new love, Ugly now acts as a kind of foil to the poppy, polished Pretty, more akin to what Johnson describes as “your insides – whatever you write in your journal at 4:00 a.m. Homemade, raw, acoustic, sexy and messy.” Mixed and mastered by Jimmy Mansfield, the album was a true labor of love, recorded over late nights in Salser’s barn studio, where the band tweaked and twisted songs to their formidable will. From the bombastic “Tell Me” (featuring The Honeynut Horns) and the slinky, ominous “Two Days” to the driving “Moonshine,” brassy, warm-hearted “Is It My Love,” and inner blues of the album-closing “Cover Me,” Ugly sees Oh He Dead visiting upon yin and yang, birth and death, beauty and ugliness, somehow straddling opposing worlds yet somehow keeping its feet moving until gravity wins out.

“Ugly is not meant to be just sad,” CJ Johnson says. “All the songs are about the beauty of the darkness that leads to more light.”

The Black Dahlia Murder and Dying Fetus will co-headline a tour of North America this year

Death metal nasties The Black Dahlia Murder and Dying Fetus have announced a tour of North America.

The shows will take place in October and November, with support coming from Spite, Angelmaker and Vomit Forth.

Tickets go on sale on Friday, June 28, at 10am local time.

The Black Dahlia Murder will be touring to promote new album Servitude , their first record since the passing of frontman Trevor Strnad in 2022. Band co-founder Brian Eschbach has switched from guitars to vocals following to fill in for the late singer.

The lead single from Servitude and the first Black Dahlia Murder song without Strnad, Aftermath , was released on June 13.

“We wanted that one to be heard first because it’s one of the faster songs on the album, if not the fastest,” Eschbach commented when the song came out.

“We wanted that very aggressive Black Dahlia melodic death metal feel coming right at you.

“Lyrically, it’s about a meteor that fucks up the whole planet, but there’s still people living. Kind of like The Walking Dead , but with no zombies – so you get right to how people deal with it. And by the end, they’re eating each other.”

Of coming into his new role as a vocalist and lyricist, Eschbach said, “Honestly, writing the lyrics for this album was easier for me than writing the music for the three songs that I wrote music for. I’d pick a subject, research it, and just kinda dive in.

“Even though it’s not something I’d really ever done before, there was a natural flow to it once I started.”

Dying Fetus will be touring to promote last year’s album Make Them Beg For Death .

Both bands recently played at Download Festival in Donington, UK. Metal Hammer awarded The Black Dahlia Murder’s set a spotless five-star review .

America just ordered another round of Jelly Roll .

The crossover country/Hip-Hop headliner just announced he’s added 15 concerts to his North American arena ‘The Beautifully Broken Tour’ with special guests Warren Zeiders , Alexandra Kay , Ernest , Shaboozey and Allie Colleen joining him on select dates.

None of the new gigs will take the 39-year-old Grammy nominee to New York or New Jersey; that’s likely because he already booked six huge gigs in the Tri-State.

First, Jelly Roll will headline at Albany’s  MVP Arena  on Sept. 24. After that, he drops into New York City’s  Madison Square Garden  on Sept. 27, Long Island’s  UBS Arena  on Sept. 28, Newark’s  Prudential Center  on Sept. 29 and finally Buffalo’s  KeyBank Center  on Oct. 6.

But wait! There’s more!

He’s also slated to perform at NYC’s Global Citizen Festival on Sept. 28 with Post Malone and Doja Cat . As you may have noticed above, he’ll hoof it to Long Island later that night for a show at the UBS Arena.

“This is the biggest tour of my life y’all and I’m going to do it really really big this year— I can’t wait to see y’all at a show,” the “Save Me” singer shared on  Instagram when he announced the tour back in February. “Come party with us!”

Jelly Roll new music

In 2023, Jelly Roll dropped his seventh solo album  “Whitsitt Chapel.”

As expected, the country rapper melds the two genres to create a record that is distinctly Jelly Roll-esque.

The bumpin’ opening track “Halfway To Hell” sets the tone — tight rhymes lead to a soaring country-twanged chorus.

After that, he moves into ballad territory on “Church” before returning to his unmistakable mashup sound on “The Lost.”

For our money, the highlight is the lively, Hip-Hop heavy “Unlive” featuring Yelawolf. Fingers crossed, he shows up at some point on ‘The Beautifully Broken Tour.’

Jelly Roll  is officially going international!

The "Son of a Sinner" country singer has booked his first-ever international tour dates in Canada. On Monday, Jelly Roll, 39, took to his Instagram Stories to post a link for ticket sales. He'll make his first appearance July 8 at The Meridian Centre at St. Catherines, Ontario. While the singer previously performed once in Mexico , the Canada dates mark his first official tour outside of the U.S. 

The two-time GRAMMY-nominated singer will then make an appearance July 9 at the 30th annual Ottawa Bluesfest. Jelly Roll's St. Catherines performance will benefit The Heather Winterstein Foundation. Heather Winterstein, a 24-year-old Indigenous woman, died in the waiting room of a St. Catherines hospital in December 2021. Her death sparked outrage after she was only given Tylenol and sent home during her initial visit to the hospital. When her symptoms worsened, Winterstein returned the next day, only to collapse and die in the waiting room.

"The Foundation and the family of Heather Winterstein are grateful that Jelly Roll is honoring us with his very first Canadian concert on our behalf," said Jennifer Dockstader, the foundation's executive director (via Canada's NewsTalk 610 ). "His dedication to raising awareness, sharing his story of healing, and supporting substance use disorder treatments are a beacon of hope for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people alike across Turtle Island. His message brings the struggles of our loved ones into the open and helps us celebrate the healing journeys of our relatives in our community, offering opportunities for equity and reconciliation."

Prior to booking his first international tour, Jelly Roll shared  with  Jon Bon Jovi  for  Interview Magazine  that he was encountering some difficulties booking international tour dates due to his felony convictions.

"I'm so excited. We're figuring out the final pieces of some legal puzzles for me to get overseas," Jelly Roll told Bon Jovi, who responded with confusion. "Yeah. It's funny, America has finally agreed to let me leave and give me a passport, but some countries won't let me come because of my felonies."

Jelly Roll added, "We're working on that. I think it's going to work in my favor." 

The country star has openly discussed his past issues  with the law and drugs. He even sat before a Senate committee hearing on Capitol Hill in January to  discuss the fentanyl crisis  in a move many have viewed as yet another example of how the formerly struggling artist has completely turned his life around.

Monday proved to be an extra special day for Jelly Roll, who shared that his powerful new single , "I Am Not Okay," is "the biggest release of my career." 

ET spoke to Jelly Roll  at CMA Fest last weekend and he teased his latest music era, which will follow the success of his last album, 2023's  Whitsitt Chapel.

"This has been my whole life the last 11 months," he teased to ET. "I have been drowning in this album. I've never wrote more songs. I've never took it more serious and I'm probably gonna release more music this year than I've ever released in a year of my career."

Jelly Roll extending ‘Beautifully Broken Tour’ with stop in Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Jelly Roll says he is extending his Beautifully Broken Tour with 15 new dates including one a stop in downtown Evansville.

That show is set to take place at the Ford Center on Sunday, November 10.

Officials say tickets for the newly added shows will be available starting with Citi and Verizon presale beginning on Thursday, June 27.

According to a release, additional presales will run throughout the week ahead of the general tickets.

General tickets will go on sale Monday, July 1 and can be purchased on Ticketmaster.com .

André 3000 Is Taking Instrumental Album 'New Blue Sun' on the Road Again: Here Are the Dates

André 3000’s latest run kicks off at the Orpheum Theater in New Orleans in September.

Those who missed André 3000 's recent string of tour dates , which included stops at uniquely intimate venues like The Blue Room in Nashville , have just been given their chance to right their wrongs with the announcement of a new North American tour kicking off later this year.

Tuesday, 3 Stacks, whose instrumental album New Blue Sun arrived last November, rolled out dates and ticket info for his latest trek, starting with a show at the historic Orpheum Theater in New Orleans. Joining him for this run of dates across three months are New Blue Sun players Carlos Niño, Nate Mercereau, and Surya Botofasina with Deantoni Parks.

New Blue Sun , technically André’s first solo studio album, was met with positive reviews upon its release via Epic Records last year. Amid the rollout, the Outkast alum also spoke candidly in a carefully curated selection of interviews about his artistic process, the ever-evolving nature of his work, and his initial hesitancy to return to the spotlight at this scale. Along the way, the album was also made the subject of a special IMAX event , with André at one point bringing album cut " That Night in Hawaii When I Turned into a Panther and Started Making These Low Register Purring Tones That I Couldn't Control ... Sh¥t Was Wild " to The Late Show .
