How the Bills can replace WR Stefon Diggs 'in the aggregate'

David faux | jul 6, 2024.

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs (14) celebrates Buffalo Bills tight end Dalton Kincaid s (86) touchdown.

  • Buffalo Bills | News, Scores, Schedules & Standings

This article was produced in conjunction with  Cover 1 , a leading voice in making the intricacies of Buffalo Bills football digestible. Be sure to subscribe to their  YouTube channel  and  podcast feeds .

In the 2011 Brad Pitt-led film Moneyball , Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane has a dilemma: after making the ALDS, the A’s have several key players set to hit free agency and an owner who is unwilling to spend the money to keep them. In a later scene, Beane is meeting with his scouts to solve the team's problem, and he suggests that there is simply no first baseman better than impending free agent Giambi, and even there they couldn’t afford him. Instead, they need to recreate him “in the aggregate."

It’s a scene that has become notorious to sports fans looking to create some hope after their favorite team has a key departure in free agency or via trade. It's a strategy that the Buffalo Bills appear to be employing in the 2024 season after general manager Brandon Beane (of no relation to the aforementioned Billy) made the tough decision to trade Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans in the spring.

That decision meant that the Bills had to find a way to replace Diggs’ immense production, but they couldn’t afford a 1:1 replacement given their salary cap situation. Given their 11-6 record last season, the team also wasn't in the position to take a bona fide No. 1 wide receiver in the 2024 NFL Draft. The constraints prompted the Bills’ Beane to take a note from the A’s Beane and decide to recreate that production in the aggregate.

Related: Offensive Combination propels Bills to No. 1 ranking in key category

But what does that mean? What does that look like? How will Allen be successful without his favorite target?

All great questions, and I am so glad you asked them.

What does it mean to “Recreate in the aggregate?"

Stefon Diggs

Essentially, what the Bills are now looking for are multiple players to fill the gap that Diggs left behind as opposed to a single player to replace all of his production. Diggs’ departure means the Bills will have to replace his 160 targets, 107 catches, 1,183 yards, and eight touchdowns in the upcoming season. If you’re unsure if that’s a lot, it is.

The Bills are going to be looking to the likes of Dalton Kincaid, Curtis Samuel, Khalil Shakir, and second-round pick Keon Coleman to replace those losses. This is all the basic numbers side of it, but there’s more than just the raw numbers that are important to the Diggs replacement. The fact of the matter is that despite his production falling off later in the season, Diggs still commands a lot of respect from opposing defensive gameplans. Joe Brady, the Bills’ interim offensive coordinator in 2023, understood that and used him as a way to create more space for other players to operate. As such, Diggs’ production sank. Now that Diggs is gone, however, there’s no single pass catcher on the Bills’ offense that commands that level of respect and attention… at the moment.

What does it look like to “Recreate in the aggregate?"

Dalton Kincaid

On the one hand, the Bills have actually been preparing for Diggs’ departure since the moment they drafted Dalton Kincaid in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Kincaid was seen as a big receiving threat coming out of the University of Utah , and in his first year lived up to that hype, catching 73 passes for 673 yards and a pair of scores. Those numbers are all expected to increase this year, and with good reason; Kincaid is a smooth athlete with great hands who can make a lot happen after the catch when he’s given space.

Another player who can create after the catch is the Bills’ biggest free-agent addition, Curtis Samuel. The 27-year-old had the best season of his career (97 targets, 77 catches, 851 yards, three touchdowns, along with 200 rushing yards on 41 attempts) with Brady as his offensive coordinator with the Carolina Panthers in 2020, and now that they’ve been reunited with a quarterback as special as Josh Allen, one can assume a statistical jump from Samuel, who is coming off an underwhelming three-year stint with the Washington Commanders.

Khalil Shakir, a 2022 fifth-round pick, enjoyed a nice uptick in all statistical categories in 2023. Shakir earned more opportunities as the season progressed and took advantage of them when his name was called. One would imagine that in 2024, in a wide receiver room that doesn’t have a clear, strong, presence, Shakir will see another uptick in his production.

There are two X factors to this particular equation that I want to highlight. The first is obvious, and it’s Keon Coleman. There are a lot of good vibes surrounding the rookie from Florida State, whose personality has garnered the attention of fans in and out of Buffalo. If football were played on vibes alone, Coleman would be slated as a perennial All-Pro. Since that’s not how football works, there are still questions about the talented Coleman. Despite his having a productive final season at Florida State, there are many questions about Coleman’s ability to separate and his overall rawness as a route runner.

Historically speaking under the Beane/Sean McDermott regime, these are the types of players that they like to take early on in the draft; talented balls of clay that they can mold and coach up to be better players. Josh Allen, Tremaine Edmunds, Greg Rousseau, and Kaiir Elam are all examples of their philosophy and their emphasis on talent over day-one readiness. Unfortunately for both Coleman and the Bills, they need him to be ready on day one. What will that turn into? What will a successful Coleman rookie campaign look like? It’s tough to say, but Bills fans should likely keep their expectations low for Coleman, not just because of his overall rawness in a vacuum, but also because this offensive identity will likely focus on running the ball, and finding more ready-made guys like Kincaid and Samuel to win, rather than trying to ease in the rookie Coleman.

Speaking of ready-made guys, let’s talk about X factor number two. You may have forgotten him in the shuffle, but don’t worry, Dawson Knox is still here. It wasn’t that long ago when Knox was a legitimately important receiving threat for this Buffalo offense. Injuries and a shift in his role under previous offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey were the primary reasons for the downshift in Knox’s production. However, if the Bills decide to lean more into 12 personnel under Brady, they may find success having both Knox and Kincaid on the field, and Knox may surprise many by having a bounce-back year after having the lowest statistical output of his entire career in 2023.

How does Josh Allen find success without his favorite target?

To be perfectly frank, we already started to see what life without Diggs would be like when Brady took over play-calling duties. As mentioned before, Diggs didn’t have the same level of production in the second half of the season once Brady became the play-caller, and while other strategic advantages are had by having Diggs on the field, a decoy only matters so much if the production isn't there. Now, the Bills have to be a true spread offense, finding different ways to hit multiple targets across the field rather than focusing primarily on a single target and hoping that opens up other guys throughout the game. It takes commitment to make a plan like this work, and it also takes the other players being genuinely good in order to replace a great talent. That being said, the Bills have plenty of talent in both the wide receiver and tight end rooms, it’s just a matter of figuring out what the ceiling on this group of players actually is.

Beyond that, the Bills had a clear shift in offensive identity from run/pass ratio once Brady took over. He committed to running the football far more than Dorsey did, and as such, if that is projected onto a full season, one could come to a reasonable conclusion that some of the targets left behind by the Diggs trade simply won’t be there in 2024 because of a re-focus on the run game. How many targets? It’s tough to say, and it may be a small margin at the end of the day. Regardless, it’s another piece of the puzzle that gets factored into this.

At the end of the day, we’ve seen teams win with big-name receivers. We’ve seen teams win without marquee wideouts, as well. You can see the Green Bay Packers taking this approach after they offloaded Davante Adams in 2022. The 2022 and 2023 Kansas City Chiefs are the perfect example of a team that gave away their best receiver and still managed to win back-to-back Super Bowls. They did so by spreading the ball out more, running the football better, and in 2023, playing elite-level defense. The Bills are certainly more than capable of doing those things, but without Diggs, it will no longer be a choice, it will be a necessity.

Jamie Lissow | Biography

Jamie Lissow is an American actor well known for his role in the Netflix original series Real Rob.

  • By Yunil Tamrakar
  • Update : June 08, 2022

Who is Jamie Lissow?

Jamie Lissow is an actor, comedian, writer, producer, and scriptwriter. He began his career as a comedian, performing his first stand-up in Buffalo, New York City.

He later progressed as an actor and landed his popular self-titled role in the Netflix original sitcom TV series  Real Rob  in 2015. Lissow co-starred alongside Rob Schneider and his wife Patricia Schneider, Miranda Scarlett, Andrei Aldochine, and Max Amini. In addition, he also appeared as a weekly guest on the late-night talk show, Gutfeld! on Fox.

As of now, he resides in Alaska.

'Real Rob'

Real Rob  follows the day-to-day life of Rob Schneider and his wife Patricia, and daughter Miranda. The sitcom originally released its first season on 1 December 2015 and its second season on 29 September 2017, each with eight episodes.

In an interview with  The Buffalo News  in 2016, Lissow talked about the show and said, "By episode eight, I feel like I went to Juilliard. Our acting days were almost like stand-up comedy. There was a scene with Rob and me were doing a scene and we were ad-libbing."

He continued, "People behind the camera were crying trying not to laugh. We stopped, and they applauded. Rob turned to me and said, 'Dude, I feel like we're a comedy team.' It was amazing."

He Shares Three Kids With His Ex-wife

Lissow was married to his ex-wife Jessica, with whom he lived in Alaska with their three children. The former pair had been dating for a long time before getting married.

The actual date of their marriage is still unknown. However, the two are said to have been together for over ten years before parting ways.

On 8 February 2016, Lissow shared a picture with his wife on Instagram and wrote, "We blew off the Super Bowl and went snow tubing for Jessica's birthday. One of the many benefits of not marrying a real man who follows football and owns tools."

His Comedy Career

Lissow started taking a comedy class at the Buffalo Funny Bone when it was located on the Boulevard Mall. In a 2016 interview with The Buffalo News, he mentioned attending summer school at Buffalo State.

It was a night school, so he would skip class and go to comedy clubs like the Comix Café and the Funny Bone. He eventually failed class due to his comedy, which is how he learned about the Funny Bone class.

In the same interview, Lissow said, "I've been itching to do stand-up and had been writing a little bit. I thought how great would it be to not only work on writing but also make a bunch of contacts."

He later debuted his stand-up comedy in Buffalo, which was the first weekend of work he did at a national club.

Lissow also mentioned that his father was his comic inspiration. He had all of the old Bill Cosby tapes, which was his first introduction to comedy.

He stated, "I grew up at a time when, maybe in the sixth grade or so, you could sneak (watch) some HBO when they had the Young Comedian specials. Those were a big deal."

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu on pulling out of doubles

“I think it was the right decision. I stand by the decision. Obviously it was a tough decision, though, because it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do.

“I didn’t want to take his last match away from him. But at the end of the day I think a lot of the players in a similar situation would have done the same thing, prioritising their body. I still stand by making the right call.

“He was obviously disappointed because it’s his last match [at Wimbledon]. But what a champion. I think that hopefully he’ll play in the Olympics and have another farewell there.

“I think with every decision, people are entitled to their opinions. Of course, there was a bit of a cloud it.

“I don’t think I would have done it any other way. I think in this sport especially, as an individual, you have to make your own calls and prioritise yourself. Especially with my history, I just had to put myself first.”

Emma Raducanu breaks silence on decision that ended Andy Murray’s Wimbledon career after singles exit

Emma Raducanu said she stands by her decision to withdraw from her Wimbledon mixed-doubles match with Andy Murray after exiting the singles tournament following a three-set defeat to qualifier Lulu Sun.

Raducanu woke up with a stiff wrist on Saturday and informed Murray that she would be prioritising her involvement in the singles, even though it denied the two-time champion a final match at the All England Club.

The 21-year-old was then knocked out in the singles in the fourth round by world number 123 Sun on Centre Court on Sunday, losing in three sets to the qualifier as she struggled with her lower back.

Despite receiving some criticism for pulling out of her match with Murray, Raducanu said she did not regret accepting the 37-year-old’s offer to play in the mixed doubles, but the former US Open admitted she did not expect to reach the fourth round.

Coco Gauff crashes out with shock defeat to continue Wimbledon woe

Coco Gauff failed to smash through her grass ceiling as she once again was unable to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

The second seed was beaten in straight sets, 6-4 6-3, by fellow American Emma Navarro on Centre Court.

Wimbledon remains the only grand slam at which Gauff, the reigning champion on the hard courts at the US Open and a runner-up on the Roland Garros clay, has not reached the last eight.

RESULT! Emma Navarro 6-4, 6-3 Coco Gauff

The pair trade the opening two points of the game before Gauff goes long and Navarro moves 30-15. But Gauff hits back as she moves to the net and makes it 30-30.

Gauff’s return goes long and Navarro has match point! And it’s saved! Navarro goes long with a simple forehand. Perhaps that was nerves.

She brings up a second match point straight away but skews a forehand wide. Two chances have come and gone... Gauff nets again, third time lucky with match point ?

YES! IT’S THERE! EMMA NAVARRO HAS STUNNED COCO GAUFF 6-4, 6-3 TO MOVE INTO THE WIMBLEDON QUARTER-FINALS!

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Navarro 6-4, 5-3 Coco Gauff

The moment of truth is her for Emma Navarro. Coco Gauff has held serve, so the the 19th seed has a chance to serve out a remarkable victory over the favourite to win the women’s title.

Wimbledon 2024: Result

We can bring you a result from that final men’s last-16 match of the day and Tommy Paul has wrapped it up in straight sets against Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2, 7-6, 6-2 and the American will next play Carlos Alcaraz.

They had to wait around all day but Paul got the job done when they finally played.

Wimbledon 2024: Latest scores

Well, well well... This shock has just come a whole lot closer... Emma Navarro has broken Coco Gauff in the second set and is just two games away from victory at 4-1.

This would be seismic and throw the women’s draw even wider open.

Have we got a shock brewing on Centre Court...?

The Coco Gauff v Emma Navarro match looks destined for a first-set tiebreak but, serving to stay in the set at 5-4 behind, Gauff finds herself broken and 19th seed Navarro nicks the first set off her fellow American.

The No 2 seed seemed to be well on course, moving through the rounds, but could she be about to suffer a surprise defeat?

Emma Raducanu out of Wimbledon after painful defeat to qualifier Lulu Sun

At least Emma Raducanu knew the feeling, of being the unknown, overlooked quantity and stepping onto the big stage to attack with merciless intent. But at Wimbledon, the strategy that won Raducanu the US Open as an 18-year-old qualifier has now been used against her.

As New Zealand player Lulu Sun thundered another crushing forehand winner past Raducanu on Centre Court, the world No 123 advanced to the quarter-finals having started the tournament in the first round of qualifying two weeks ago.

A 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 scoreline illustrates one story from this match, a one-sided first set, a battle in the second, a challenging third after Raducanu slipped on the grass and called a medical timeout that rather stalled her comeback.

But a winner count of 52 to Sun to Raducanu’s 19 tells another tale. The Sun, really, was on fire, as the last British player in the singles draw was wiped off Centre Court by a barrage of forehand strikes from the 23-year-old only making her second appearance at a grand slam.

Read Jamie Braidwood’s full report from Centre Court after a disappointing evening for Raducanu:

Tommy Paul is just a set away from a quarter-final against Carlos Alcaraz, as he follows up his 6-2 triumph in the first set over Roberto Bautista Agut by taking the second-set tiebreak 7-3.

The American 12th seed will want to try and get this match wrapped up this evening before bad light stops play if possible.

Lulu Sun emotional after beating Emma Raducanu

Here’s the start of Lulu Sun’s very emotional interview with Annabel Croft after beating Emma Raducanu. A superb result for the qualifier from New Zealand.

Just a couple of singles matches left to tidy up today. On Centre Court, following Emma Raducanu’s defeat, Coco Gauff has stepped on to the grass. She’s facing fellow American Emma Navarro and it’s on serve in the (very) early going there.

On Court 2, Tommy Pau l and Roberto Bautista Agut are trying to become the fourth man through to the quarter-finals. 12th seed Paul won the first set 6-2 and the second set has just gone 6-6, so we’re headed to a tiebreak to decide it. The winner of the match will play Carlos Alcaraz in the last eight.

Emma Raducanu beaten by qualifier Lulu Sun

Here’s the moment that qualifier Lulu Sun confirmed her stunning victory over Emma Raducanu on Centre Court. Brilliant stuff from the New Zealander

At least Emma Raducanu knew the feeling, of being the unknown, overlooked quantity and stepping onto the big stage to attack with merciless intent. But at Wimbledon , the strategy that won Raducanu the US Open as an 18-year-old qualifier has now been used against her.

As Lulu Sun thundered another crushing forehand winner past Raducanu on Centre Court, the world number 123 advanced to the quarter-finals having started the tournament in the first round of qualifying two weeks ago.

A 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 scoreline illustrates one story from this match, a one-sided first set, a battle in the second, a challenging third after Raducanu slipped on the grass and called a medical timeout that rather stalled her comeback. But a winner count of 51 to Sun to Raducanu’s 19 tells another tale.

The Sun, really, was on fire, as the last British player in the singles draw was wiped off Centre Court by a barrage of forehand strikes from the 23-year-old only making her second appearance at a grand slam.

Here’s Jamie Braidwood’s snap report from Centre Court:

Lulu Sun reacts to beating Emma Raducanu

A nice interview with Lulu Sun courtside after that win. She’s clearly emotional, initially in tears before answering Annabel Croft’s questions.

It was a great match against Emma. She relly dug deep to get the win from me. I had to fight tooth and nail against her. She’s going to run for every ball and fight to the end. I’m just incredibly... I don’t have the words right now. While walking to the court I was like “wow I’ve never seen this”. I was looking around, taking it in for the first time. I was super happy to play on this court in front of all of you. It was an amazing experience for me. I played a bit on grass in juniors and a couple of pro tournaments. I also watched the professionals growing up. Federer of course, coming towards the net and I watched on YouTube Steffi Graf vs Navratilova. It was so amazing to watch them andtaking it all in from the pros, I tried to add that to my game.

GAME, SET AND MATCH! Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 2-6 Lulu Sun

And it’s there! LULU SUN HAS STUNNED EMMA RADUCANU IN THE LAST 16 OF WIMBLEDON. The New Zealand qualifier, playing just her second-ever grand slam, triumphs 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.

Raducanu fights in the final game and gets it to 30-30. She then stays in a long rally and forces a break point but Sun puts away a floating ball and saves it well. Brilliant forehand winner clips the line and it’s now a match point for the underdog.

But Raducanu digs out an unbelievable cross-court backhand winner to save it! And the Brit brings up a second break point as Sun goes long but again, her opponent controls the rally to save it.

Great point by Sun, included a powerful forehand put away to bring up a second match point and this time makes no mistake! Raducanu goes long and Lulu Sun gives a scream of delight as she reaches the quarter-finals!

Some bad news from Court 1. Grigor Dimitrov and Daniil Medvedev were set to play out a fascinating men’s singles last-16 match but after just eight games, Dimitrov was forced to retire injured, at 5-3 down.

It means fifth seed Medvedev will go on to face Jannik Sinner in the last eight.

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 2-5 Lulu Sun* - BREAK!

Raducanu digs out a gorgeous backhand winner down the line but Sun says anything you can do, I can do better, and crunches a clean cross-court forehand winner for 30-30.

Now a backhand winner on the return of serve and it’s a break point for the New Zealander. Needless to say, Raducanu can’t afford to be broken again... And she gets away with it! Sun sets the point up perfectly but then goes long with potentially the winning forehand! Break point saved but Raducanu squanders a couple of game points that come her way.

Now a second break point for Sun and oh dear, oh dear. It’s a double fault. Horrible way to hand Sun the double break and this Wimbledon campaign is all but over for Emma Raducanu.

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 2-4 Lulu Sun

A double fault to open up the latest service game for Sun... Suddenly it’s 0-30 as the qualifier goes well long. Chance for Raducanu?

The New Zealander fights back and puts away an overhead smash for 30-30 before a big serve sets her up to hold which she takes when firing a forehand at Raducanu at the net, who can’t find the volley. That was a great response to a potentially dangerous situation. Two more holds needed...

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 2-3 Lulu Sun*

Raducanu loops up a tempting half-court moon ball but Sun can only smash it into the bottom of the net. She’s rightly annoyed with herself there.

A solid hold to 15 for the Brit, finished with a half-court forehand put away. Three chances left for Raducanu to break the Sun serve and save this match.

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 1-3 Lulu Sun

Oof! Sun crushes a backhand winner down the line to open up the game but Raducanu dominates the next two longer rallies, eventually forcing the New Zealander to drift long, and the Brit has a sniff at 15-30.

But Sun dictates the next few points, stepping in behind big first serves to repel any danger and Raducanu sends a forehand long to see the chance slip away. Good hold.

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 1-2 Lulu Sun*

Here are some shots from the medical treatment Raducanu received. She seems to be moving completely freely now for what it’s worth.

Sun is shining now! A gorgeous forehand winner makes it 15-30, her depth of groundstrokes so far today has been immense. To her credit, Raducanu digs deep though and wins the next two points to put her on the brink of a vital hold, which is sealed with an ace down the ‘t’.

A huge hold in the context of this deciding set

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 0-2 Lulu Sun

Raducanu responds well to going a break down and crunches a cross-court forehand winner to make it 30-30. Sun brings up game point with a powerful groundstroke before a stunning clean winner off the forehand side enables her to consolidate the break.

Advantage Sun in this deciding set.

Jannik Sinner lays down powerful marker to leave Carlos Alcaraz quaking

Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz remain on course for a scintillating semi-final showdown at Wimbledon but the Italian will be happier with his work on the middle Sunday at SW19 as the pair moved just one step away from renewing a rivalry that could well define the next decade of men’s tennis.

While Alcaraz was toiling away on Centre Court, being pushed by the relentless Ugo Humbert before escaping with a four-set win, Sinner was swatting away a potentially dangerous foe in Ben Shelton on Court 1 with remarkable ruthlessness.

Shelton has arguably been the busiest man at Wimbledon this week, with his first three matches in the men’s singles draw all going to five sets, while he has also been playing doubles alongside Mackenzie McDonald. The 21-year-old American, who burst on to the scene with his run to the semi-finals at last year’s US Open, is a ball of energy around the court and showed no ill effects from his punishing schedule but Sinner largely outclassed him in a 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (11-9) win that took just over two hours.

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 0-1 Lulu Sun*

That’s a promising sign. An ace off the first point out of the medical timeout to make it 30-30! But Sun hits back with a lovely put-away volley to bring up a break point!

Raducanu moved about the court and eventually nets, so LULU SUN HAS A BREAK OF SERVE in the first game of the decider. Raducanu’s movement didn’t seem too impeded at least.

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 0-0 Lulu Sun - MEDICAL TIMEOUT!

This is really not looking good for Raducanu. After receiving the back massage on the floor, she gingerly gets to her feet and sits in her chair, where the physio manipulates her body from side to side to try and loosen it up.

She’s going to give it a go, anyway. We’re back underway with Raducanu 15-30 down in the first game of the third set

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 0-0 Lulu Sun - MEDICAL TIMEOUT

Raducanu is on her back receiving treatment to her left side after that fall.

When Raducanu went down after slipping, her legs split and she’s receiving around the knee area too.

While this is added drama, it is not good news for Raducanu. She is now on her front, also getting treatment on her back.

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 0-0 Lulu Sun

After breaking in the 12th game of the second set, Raducanu will serve first to start the third.

Finally, she has some momentum, and the Centre Court crowd are loving this.

Oh no.... Raducanu has slipped on the grass and shakes her head....

Raducanu gets back to her feet and walks slowly back to her chair and sits down.

She slipped behind the baseline attempting to retrieve a forehand from Sun.

The physio has been called.

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 Lulu Sun - SET

We’re going to a third set on Centre Court! How Raducanu managed to hang on there, in the face of those attacks from Sun, I will never know. But she did and the qualifier got tight in the closing stages.

Both players head off for a break!

Huge roars around Centre Court as Raducanu scrambles to make a lob, smash and stay in the point as Sun fires long!

A half-chance. Sun shuts the door with a forehand winner crosscourt, onto the line.

Sun has Raducanu running, but then blinks on a smash at the net!

SET POINT! Sun lands the first serve into the net but does not hesitate as she saves with the forehand.

Deuce: RADUCANU FOREHAND WINNER!

Another set point... Sun finds the net... second serve... SUN FIRES LONG!

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu 2-6 6-5 Lulu Sun*

Raducanu looks to be heading for a confident hold after blasting a forehand down the line but errs on the pick-up volley and suddenly Sun is back at 30-30 after a forehand strike.

Sun, though, chucks a backhand long. Nerves? Maybe! Sun misses on another return. This time into the net.

Raducanu has got a tiebreak at least.

Sun thinks she’s found the ace but Raducanu challenges and finds it landed out!

But on the second serve, Raducanu fires long on the forehand! A big miss.

Sun nets on the backhand, though, so this set gets another deuce game.

In a flash behind serve, Sun closes it out.

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu 2-6 4-3 Lulu Sun*

Sun steps in impressively to land a forehand winner on the volley and move to 15-30, but Raducanu finds a good serve up the middle.

But on the return, Sun steps in again and puts away a brilliant volley onto the line.

Break point: but Raducanu saves brilliantly with the forehand, going after Sun’s weaker wing.

Deuce. After another tense rally, the backhand goes long from Raducanu and hands Sun another chance.

Wow. Stunning forehand winner from Raducanu to save, now can she hold?

Raducanu goes after the forehand! Sun nets! Raducanu hangs on again!

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 2-6 3-3 Lulu Sun

Sun picks up another few winners to add to her collection as she holds to love.

The momentum is all in her favour still.

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu 2-6 3-2 Lulu Sun*

Sun has reached 25 winners already. Raducanu has three.

On 15-30, Raducanu steps into the net behind a big first-serve and lands the pass.

Backhand winner from Raducanu down the line! Gutsy shot, but well delivered.

Sun responds to drag Raducanu into another deuce game, but Sun then nets on the backhand!

The qualifier is still asking the tricky questions, but Raducanu is just about hanging on for now.

Wimbledon 2024: GAME, SET AND MATCH! Jannik Sinner beats Ben Shelton 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (9)

A dramatic end! A typically hard-hitting tiebreak sees both men thundering groundstrokes at each other but Sinner gets the mini-break to move 3-2 ahead and grimly holds on to it until Shelton hits back to make it 5-5.

A stunning forehand winner down the line from Shelton then has him fist-pumping, the crowd on their feet in celebration and a set point at 6-5 on his own serve at his mercy but he flails a forehand wide, going for too much. Sinner survives!

Twice more Shelton brings up set point on the Sinner serve, only to float a groundstroke long and while Sinner sees his first match point go begging thanks to a Shelton ace, he takes the second when Shelton’s second serve takes a net-cord, lands outside the service box for a double fault and No 1 seed Jannik Sinner wins the breaker 11-9 to go through in straight sets!

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 2-6 2-2 Lulu Sun

Brilliant depth on the return from Raducanu, as she steps into the forehand down the line on 30-30.

Break point: but Raducanu puts the backhand into the net! Dealing with that wide serve has been a frequent issue.

Deuce. Raducanu steps on the return to bring another break point - but Raducanu again floats the return wide on the backhand!

Sun fires a forehand winner and then takes the game as Raducanu slices wide!

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu 2-6 2-1 Lulu Sun*

Sun’s backhand coughs up a couple of errors and Raducanu needs to go after it more.

Wimbledon 2024: Shelton squanders set point as Sinner takes third set to a tiebreak

Was that Ben Shelton’s chance? At 6-5 up, with set point at 30-40 on the Jannik Sinner serve, the American had a look at a second serve but crunched his forehand return into the net. Sinner then won the next two points as well to escape with a hold and send us to a tiebreak in this third set.

Shelton has to win this to stay in the match

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu 2-6 1-1 Lulu Sun

Sun responds to an error with a crushing forehand strike.

Then, a clipped forehand winner from Sun. She just can’t miss at the moment.

Raducanu’s return goes out. She just has to hang on and hope Sun heats down.

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu 2-6 1-0 Lulu Sun*

This has been ruthless from No 1 seed Jannik Sinner out on Court 1. He seals the second set against 14th seed Ben Shelton to lead 6-2, 6-4 and is yet to face a break point.

A fist pump from the Italian as he’s just a set away from the quarter-finals after 65 minutes of play. Saving plenty of his bullets for bigger challenges to come would suit Sinner just fine. Can he finish this match off in style?

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 0-0 Lulu Sun

Wimbledon 2024: Who is Lulu Sun?

The 23-year-old was born in New Zealand but her mum is from China and her dad is from Croatia.

She’s the world 123 and started in Wimbledon qualifying, earning three wins in a row to reach the main draw.

In the first round, she beat eighth seed and Australian Open finalist Qinwen Zheng. This is just her second appearance at a grand slam.

“Lulu I played in juniors with. I just know she’s a very tough competitor, like everyone in this.

“You don’t qualify and make fourth round if you’re not extremely dangerous, beating the players she has.

“I’m expecting a really, really tough match. I think, as well, qualifiers are actually sometimes more dangerous. I’m really up for a battle, though.”

Wimbledon 2024: Raducanu says wrist is ‘good’ ahead of facing Lulu Sun

Emma Raducanu gave a very brief word to BBC Sport after returning from the practice courts.

She said her wrist is feeling “good” ahead of facing Lulu Sun on Centre Court.

Wimbledon 2024: Sinner staying in control

This is impressive stuff by Jannik Sinner. He’s yet to face a break point on his own serve and is keeping Ben Shelton at arm’s length in this second set after that early break.

Shelton just about clinging on at 4-3 behind but if he can’t get close to the Sinner serve, the Italian will shortly find himself just a set away from the quarter-finals.

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu vs Lulu Sun

Emma Raducanu looks to continue her impressive Wimbledon run as she returns to singles action against qualifier Lulu Sun, following her decision to withdraw from her mixed doubles match with Andy Murray.

Raducanu has matched her best performance at Wimbledon and reached the fourth round with an impressive victory over ninth seed Maria Sakkari , but pulled out of the mixed doubles citing wrist soreness.

Raducanu’s decision brought Murray’s Wimbledon career to an abrupt end , with the two-time champion unable to play with another partner, but there are no indications that the Briton’s wrist will stop her from playing in the singles.

The 21-year-old wanted to prioritise the singles and said after her 6-2 6-3 win over Sakkari that she is enjoying herself on the tennis court again following her US Open title three years ago.

Raducanu will be wary of the threat posed by Lulu Sun and knows her opponent well from the juniors. Sun is ranked 123rd in the world but has won six matches in a row from qualifying - including a win against eighth seed Qinwen Zheng.

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu on court next

Raducanu has followed Alcaraz wins in each of the last two rounds.

Can she make it three out of three against Lulu Sun to reach the quarter-finals.

She will be out on court next.

Wimbledon 2024: *Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-4, 1-6 7-5 Ugo Humbert

GAME, SET AND MATCH!

Alcaraz finds a way! The defending champion continues at Wimbledon after outlasting an inspired Ugo Humbert.

Alcaraz was playing poorly in the third, but found a way to win while not playing well and once again struck at a crucial time late in the fourth.

Alcaraz roars! You can see what that means!

Wimbledon 2024: Sinner on a roll

While Carlos Alcaraz is in an almighty battle on Centre Court, Jannik Sinner is showing no signs of hanging about over on Court 1.

Having taken the first set 6-2 against 14th seed Ben Shelton, he breaks the American in the very first game of the second set. Shelton gets Sinner’s first service game to 30-30 in response but two huge serves from the Italian bail him out and he’s 2-0 to the good.

Wimbledon 2024: *Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-4, 1-6 6-5 Ugo Humbert

Humbert has been brilliant since going two sets down... but the Frenchman puts an overhead long and suddenly it’s two break points for Alcaraz!

Alcaraz pings a brilliant forehand winner onto the line! He breaks and will serve for the match!

Wimbledon 2024: Sinner gets over the line in first set

Relatively straightforward for Jannik Sinner on Court 1. He serves it out at the first time of asking to win the opening set 6-2 against Ben Shelton in around 30 minutes.

Can the American respond quickly here?

Wimbledon 2024: *Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-4, 1-6 4-5 Ugo Humbert

Alcaraz shakes his head as he puts a simple forehand into the net.

Humpert holds and forces Alcaraz to do the same to stay in the set.

Wimbledon 2024: Sinner closes in on first set

Jannik Sinner is closing in on this first set on Court 1. After narrowly avoiding being broken when he challenged an incorrct line call, Ben Shelton duly lost his serve in the next game and now the world No 1 has just secured a second break and leads 5-2.

He’ll serve for he first set imminently

Wimbledon 2024: Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-4, 1-6 4-4 Ugo Humbert

INCREDIBLE! Another roaring winner from Humbert puts the pressure on Alcaraz, who turns and grumbles at his box. He doesn’t know what to do!

Double fault! Now Alcaraz is up against three break points again!

But Alcaraz finds his serve and saves all three to get back to deuce.

Just in time, Alcaraz finds his serve! HUGE HOLD!

Wimbledon 2024: Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-4, 1-6 3-3 Ugo Humbert* - BREAK!

Humbert is at it again! The Frenchman rips a stunning backhand winner down the line that had Alcaraz diving after it, before taking the break with a brilliant return.

Level again. Alcaraz broken for the fifth time in six games.

Wimbledon 2024: It’s raining again!

Play is suspended again on the outside courts.

Bad news for Paula Badosa, who led Donna Vekic 5-1 n the second set and was closing in on the decider.

Wimbledon 2024: Shelton narrowly avoid being broken by Sinner

Ben Shelton thought he’d been broken in the third game of the match by Jannik Sinner and the players were heading back to their chairs when Shelton decided to challenge the line call on the seemingly successful.

It turned out Sinner had put the ball wide, the call was overturned and Shelton went on to hold serve. He leads 2-1, on serve, in the opening set.

Out on Court 1, men’s No 1 seed Jannik Sinner is in action against young American star Ben Shelton . Shelton may be the busiest man in SW19 currently, with each of his first three singles matches going to five sets and he’s been playing doubles as well.

The youngster is still a ball of energy though and will relish the chance to upset the world No 1. It’s on serve at 1-1 in the early going.

Wimbledon 2024: Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-4, 1-6 3-1 Ugo Humbert*

A third break in a row on Centre Court! Neither player can hold serve right now, but Alcaraz strikes ahead once more. Now, can he hold for the first time in five games...

He can! Despite Humbert putting a winner straight down the line, Alcaraz comes back to hold to 15. He pumps his fist at his box.

Wimbledon 2024: Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-4, 1-6 1-1 Ugo Humbert* - BREAK!

Wild! Humbert cracks a couple of beautiful returns against the Alcaraz serve, for a fourth time in a row!

The French No 1 is going for his shots and getting the rewards.

Wimbledon 2024: *Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-4, 1-6 1-0 Ugo Humbert - BREAK!

Some response from Alcaraz, who breaks Humbert right at the start of the fourth! The reigning champion gets back on track, as two consecutive returns opened up a 0-30 and put the pressure on Humbert.

Alcaraz breaks to love.

Wimbledon 2024: Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-4, 1-6 Ugo Humbert* - SET!

Who saw that coming? Humbert breaks for the third time to take the set, with a stunning backhand winner down the line!

Alcaraz needs to get his head back in the game. He started that one with a poor volley into the net but Humbert has been inspired.

Game on indeed.

Play is now back underway under blue skies at Wimbledon.

On Court 2, Donna Vekic takes the first set 6-2 against former world No 2 Paula Badosa after the rain delay.

The winner of the match faces the winner of Raducanu vs Sun in the quarter-finals.

Wimbledon 2024: Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-4, 1-4 Ugo Humbert* - BREAK!

What has happened on Centre Court?! Humbert takes the double-break as Alcaraz fires wide on the forehand!

The Frenchman has reacted so well to losing the second set, which was tight. Alcaraz, though, has lost his way!

Wimbledon 2024: Madison Keys retires

Brutal. Heart-breaking scenes on Court One as Madison Keys retires . She leaves the court in tears.

Keys was broken when serving for the match and then twinged her groin, leaving the court for treatment.

She could not move after returning to the court and retires within a game, at 5-5 in the third.

It had been an incredible match. Jasmine Paolini advances to her first Wimbledon quarter-final.

But that’s not the way she would have wanted.

Wimbledon 2024: Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-4, 1-2 Ugo Humbert - BREAK!

Well, well. Humbert grins at his box as he breaks Alcaraz to lead in the third!

Ah, this is tough. Madison Keys is back on court but with her left leg heavily strapped. The American can barely move and Jasmine Paolini can win the first point with a simple backhand winner down the line.

Keys is in tears as Paolini gets two break points. And Paolini takes the break to level the match at 5-5 in the third. Sadly, it looks like this is going in one direction now.

Wimbledon 2024: Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-4, 1-1 Ugo Humbert

This is how Alcaraz took the second set: stunning! One of his best!

A case of deja vu all over again for Madison Keys? She squandered a huge lead in the second set before regaining her composure to win the tiebreak. She appears on the brink of seeing off Jasmine Paolini at 5-2 up, with a double break in the decider, attempting to serve it out. But Paolini digs deep and breaks!

Paolini then holds and it’s now 5-4 - still advantage Keys, who will try to serve it out again but she would’ve loved to finish it there. And now Keys has called for the trainer after appearing to twinge her groin!

SET! Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-4 Ugo Humbert

Like all great champions, Alcaraz upping the ante at the key moment. Wins a great point to get it to 15-30 before Humbert hits back with a stunning put-away volley for 30-30.

Humbert then gets Alcaraz running and he almost pulls off an outrageous cross-court forehand winner but it misses the line by a matter of millimetres. An athletic Alcaraz backhand from behind the baseline after Humbert had scurried to reach a drop shot then moves he game to deuce.

And now a set point for the Spaniard. It’s come out of nowhere in terms of this set, really... Gets a look at a second serve and WHAT A WAY TO WIN THE SET! HOW HAS ALCARAZ DONE THAT?! Humbert has him beaten but it’s incredible defensive tennis, scurrying, sliding and stretching all over the court to keep the ball in play. He even slips at one point but gets to his feet and stays alive! He eventually lunges to reach a drop shot, a tough volley for Humbert but only needs to find the court and he wins the point but it drifts a couple of inches long! WOW WOW WOW! Alcaraz now two sets to the good

*denotes next to serve

Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 5-4 Ugo Humbert*

Ugo Humbert has been pretty much flawless on serve in this second set and it’s another straightforward hold for the underdog. This time, Alcaraz responds in kind though as he blitzes into a 40-0 lead and then seals the win in quick fashion.

Are we destined for a tiebreak here on Centre?

Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 4-3 Ugo Humbert*

Another good service game from Humbert as he resists any Alcaraz brilliance in a hold to 15.

Still some drama on the Alcaraz service game that follows this time as well though. He kicks at a ball in frustration when a double fault makes it 30-30 before responding with a huge ace down the middle but a gorgeous point by Humbert ends with him cushioning a volleyed winner to bring up deuce.

A clean Humbert forehand winner off the returns saves game point before Alcaraz finally digs out the hold.

Gutsy stuff from Madison Keys over on Court 1. After squandering a 5-1 lead in the second set, she regroups for the tiebreak and fights her way to an 8-6 win in the breaker against Jasmine Paolini ! We’re heading for a third and deciding set.

Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 3-2 Ugo Humbert*

Humbert in a spot of bother on his own serve at 30-30 but fires down two aces to immediately put out that fire and keep the set in the balance.

Alcaraz then looks slightly unconvincing on his own serve. Finds the net with an unforced error to make it 15-30 and then volleys long at 30-30 to bring up a break point for the Frenchman! Alcaraz is on the run slightly but Humbert tries to go too deep with a forehand and it bounces long – break point saved by the Spaniard!

Double fault and it’s a second break point. Oof! A 116mph ace out wide saves that for Alcaraz. Now a third break point as the Humbert backhand is too strong but a stretching backhand volley at the net and Alcaraz saves it again. The passing shot wasn’t far from getting past him there! How about break point number four? Humbert goes long on the return and it’s another saved. The defending champion clinging on to his serve here somehow.

Alcaraz squanders a game point as Humbert wins the baseline rally but an ace down the ‘t’ gives him another chance and he finally wins an epic when Humbert’s forehand down the line goes long. A game that lasts more than nine minutes but Alcaraz somehow holds!

After coming from 5-1 down in the second set, Jasmine Paolini has forced a tiebreak against Madison Keys on Court 1. Of course, Keys has to win it to send this last-16 match to a decider.

Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 2-1 Ugo Humbert*

GREAT POINT! A lengthy rally ends with Humbert dinking a forehand half-volley almost all the way along the net, getting it to land an inch inside the right tramline and the scrambling Alcaraz can’t get there. Fist pumps to the roaring crowd from the Frenchman!

Controlled net play from Alcaraz though and it’s a relatively stress-free hold to 15.

*Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 1-1 Ugo Humbert

Solid start to the set by Humbert as he holds to 15.

Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 1-0 Ugo Humbert*

Some early pressure on Alcaraz in the second set as he finds himself at 30-30 in this opening service game. A serve-volley put-away (old-school grass-court tennis!) moves him to 40-30 but deuce is then brought up by Humbert.

A cross-court backhand drop shot eventually seals the slightly scratchy hold for the reigning champ.

There’s only one other match in progress due to the rain, and it’s over on Court No 1. Jasmine Paolini has engineered an incredible comeback in this second set against Madison Keys .

Keys was cruising to victory at 5-1 with a double break, seemingly on the verge of sending the match into a decider after Paolini won the first 6-3 but instead, the Italian - who has come out of nowhere this year to surge into the world’s top 10 and reach a grand slam final - has twice broken her American foe when she was serving for the set. It’s now 5-5 and back on serve!

SET! Carlos Alcaraz 6-3 Ugo Humbert

WOW! What a shot that is! The end of a long rally sees Alcaraz send Humbert off court with a backhand and the Frenchman sends a forehand right the way back across. Alcaraz is sprinting and, at full stretch, steers a backhand round the net post and into the postage stamp at the back right of the court. Sensational tennis!

Another thunderous winner moves him to 0-30 and although Humbert fights back, it’s a set point for the Spaniard at 30-40. SAVED! Big first serve down the middle from Humbert that can’t be returned.

But a second set point thanks to a whipped forehand winner down the line and this time, Alcaraz stays in the rally and outlasts his opponent to WIN THE OPENING SET 6-3.

Carlos Alcaraz 5-3 Ugo Humbert*

Straightforward hold for Alcaraz as he thumps a 107mph forehand winner and then digs out another clean winner down the line to seal the deal to 15.

*Carlos Alcaraz 4-3 Ugo Humbert

Humbert’s backhand is a weapon! Thumps another one across court that Alcaraz does well to get to but can only net. The Frenchman then decides to start coming forward to the net - a nice put-away forehand volley is followed by another that drifts long. Mixed bag.

From 40-30, he gets Alcaraz to net off the second serve and it’s a much-needed hold. Still just the one break as we reach the business end of this first set.

Carlos Alcaraz 4-2 Ugo Humbert*

Humbert has a chance at 15-30 but two great points from Alcaraz put him on the brink of consolidating the break. However, an unusually poor drop shot hits the nets and it’s deuce...

Humbert forces a second deuce with a gorgeous lefty backhand winner down the line. No drama for Alcaraz though, a beautifully-disguised sliced drop shot wins him the next point and he seals the hold when his opponent drifts long.

*Carlos Alcaraz 3-2 Ugo Humbert - BREAK!

The rain is really hammering down on the closed Centre Court roof now - it’s pretty noisy in there! Now there are some claps of thunder.

More like it from Alcaraz as he works Humbert around the court and fist pumps with delight as he brings up 0-30. Humbert then goes long, loses a challenge and faces three break points at 0-40.

He saves the first but goes long early in the rally off the next point and ALCARAZ BREAKS SERVE in this first set.

Carlos Alcaraz 2-2 Ugo Humbert*

The rain is pretty torrential now. Definitely a day for the show courts under roofs....

Speaking of which, Alcaraz yet to get in his full flow on Centre and chucks in a double fault to give Humbert a sniff at 30-30. The Frenchman goes wide with a two-handed backhand and then nets the return off a big first serve and Alcaraz holds.
