Inward Journeys

About  me.

Through various inward journeying of my own, I have gained insight and appreciation for how simple practices, undertaken routinely, can enable powerful and lasting healing. My learning of bio-energetic touch and energy balancing techniques has increased my resiliency, awareness, and connection to a community.  My own journey has taken me all over the world. I grew up in Connecticut, USA, and have lived and worked for years in Scandinavia, Thailand, South Africa, and Rwanda. My education includes social and humanistic sciences which I use to advocate for positive social change.

My training includes Polarity Therapy, Reiki (Okuden Reiki Level III certified), Hatha Yoga,  Cranio-sacral massage, Thai Foot Reflexology, Ayurveda, and mindfulness meditation. I am certified under a 200 hour Integrative Yoga Therapy and International Yoga Alliance registered program by BodyTherapies Yoga in Canada, led by Heather Greaves. This takes adopts a holistic, therapeutic, and energetically-aligned approach. I regularly explore and love to experience other healing arts including sound healing, theta healing, Access Bars, chakra balancing, and TRE,

I studied polarity under Chris McGrath (AUS), Andreas Ledermann (CH), Birgitte Raihman (CH), John Beaulieu (US), Bruce Berger (US), and Shakti Smith (US). Polarity is a comprehensive system of hands-on healing based on a detailed understanding of the human energy field. I have been a member of the German Polarity Therapy Association  and regularly participating in International Polarity Education Alliance gatherings.

Well-Being and Happiness Through Inwardness

Inwardness can be described as the beginning of spiritual life and happiness..

Posted August 12, 2021 | Reviewed by Vanessa Lancaster

  • Patanjali, author of the ancient Yoga Sutras, spoke of a state of 'inwardness,' the ability to to rest inside our own mental space.
  • 'Outwardness' means being addicted to external stimuli, unable to live without continual distractions and activity.
  • Inwardness is the beginning of real happiness, bringing a fundamental sense of ease and contentment, and a relishing of inactivity and solitude.

Around 2000 years ago, a Hindu sage named Patanjali developed one of the world’s first-ever personal development paths. Nothing is known about Patanjali as a person - some scholars doubt that he even existed and suggest that a group of different scholars compiled his teachings. However, if he did exist, there is no doubt that Patanjali was an exceptional psychologist. His path is referred to as the ‘eight-limbed path of yoga and is described in the Yoga Sutras .

The first two stages of the path are ethical guidelines, while the third is bodily postures. (These have become known as the modern practice of yoga, although asanas are just one limb of the path as a whole). The fourth stage is control of the breath. The latter stages deal with mental abilities, such as 'one-pointedness of mind, which is equivalent to what modern psychologists call ‘flow.’ Following this, there is meditation , leading to the final stage of samadhi when the person attains a state of oneness with the world. (This reflects the literal meaning of yoga, which is union).

However, in my view, the most important stage of Patanjali’s path is the fifth stage, Pratyahara , which can be translated as ‘turning the senses within,’ or simply inwardness. This is the ability to live inside ourselves, to rest inside our own mental space, without immersing our attention in external things. Inwardness means living in a state of being without needing to be constantly active. It means living in a state of connection to our own being rather than in a constant state of self-evasion.

The Yoga Sutras describe inwardness as the beginning of the spiritual life, but it is also the beginning of real happiness . It marks a major shift when we begin to seek wellbeing inside ourselves rather than outside. Certainly, it is impossible to find any lasting inner contentment without the capacity of inwardness.

Outwardness–Living Outside Ourselves

Unfortunately, many people lack the capacity to be inward. When they are alone with themselves, with nothing external to immerse their attention in, they feel uneasy. It’s as if there's a kind of psychological discord inside them, on the surface of their minds, which they encounter when their attention isn't occupied. They feel an impulse is to escape from this discord, so they immediately seek out distractions or activities.

Television is probably the best method ever devised to keep human beings’ attention outside themselves and escape psychological discord. This is why, from the 1950s onwards, television became the most popular form of entertainment in the world. Since the age of the Internet, TV has become slightly less popular, but at its peak, people in the US watched TV for an average of 35 hours a week, or five hours a day.

While we live in a state of ‘outwardness’ – unable to rest inside our own minds – we live in dissatisfaction, chronically prone to boredom and loneliness . Like addicts, we depend on a constant supply of stimulation – usually in the form of activities and distractions - and when the supply comes to a halt, we find it difficult to cope. There is a continual sense of restlessness, which means that we can never truly relax.

Modern entertainment cultures thrive on outwardness. In the age of the Internet, stimulation has never been so readily accessible. Many people had grown so used to immersing their attention in their smartphones and computers that they had become more alienated from their inner worlds than any generation before them – even the generations who watched endless hours of television.

The Benefits of Inwardness

Living inside ourselves means no longer being addicted to stimulation. It means no longer living a life of constant doing, interspersed with periods of distraction. Inwardness brings a fundamental sense of ease and contentment. We are perfectly happy even if there are no entertainments or activities to occupy our attention. We can rest peacefully inside ourselves, occupying our own mental space and observing our own thoughts and feelings.

inward journeys

In other words, we are able to be . We are able to do nothing in particular without being bored. We are able to spend time alone without feeling lonely. In fact, when we live inwardly, we relish inactivity and solitude as periods of deep relaxation and reattunement.

Becoming Inward

The good news is that it isn’t so difficult to cultivate inwardness. To a large extent, it’s a question of habit. Almost from the moment, we’re born, we’re encouraged to keep our minds occupied, to do rather than to be. In the modern world, there is so much encouragement to immerse our attention in electronic devices and social media that many of us have completely lost the ability to be. As a result, our inner worlds have become a kind of terra incognita . We’re so unaccustomed to it that whenever we’re forced to spend time there, we feel uneasy, like explorers on the edge of a dark forest. We feel frightened by the unfamiliar noises and the strange shapes and shades, so we turn around and run away as quickly as possible.

But once we do spend time inside ourselves, this sense of unease usually fades away. We quickly grow habituated to our inner space, and our psychological discord begins to dissipate. This is when the great benefits of meditation are probably the best single method of cultivating inwardness. Meditation makes us feel more at home inside ourselves. It’s a kind of therapy that helps us overcome our addiction to stimulation. It heals the discord on the surface of our minds so that we can gain access to the wellbeing and stability deep inside our beings.

And as Patanjali knew, this is only really the beginning. Once we have cultivated inwardness, then we journey deeper into ourselves. We find it easier to enter the state of flow and live in a state of presence, simply being aware of the experience at the moment. And beyond that, we may reach the state that Patanjali called samadhi when our sense of separation dissolves away, and we become aware of our essential oneness with the universe.

Inward Journey

At Church of the Saviour, the inward journey is not simply a solitary devotional path. Instead, it is a combination of practices designed to hold one’s center in the midst of conflict and competing demands for our time and attention. The inward journey is not only centering prayer and listening for God, it is also a journey of self-knowledge and restraint, of surrender and courage for non-violent action.

In 1953, the church purchased a farm in Germantown, Maryland, and in 1956 built a retreat lodge there, inviting people into periods of silence on the land. “The one journey that ultimately matters,” Gordon wrote, “is the journey into the place of stillness deep within one’s self. To reach that place is to be at home; to fail to reach it is to be forever restless. In contemplation we catch a vision of not only what is, but what can be. Contrary to what we have thought, contemplatives are the great doers.”

INDIVIDUAL PRACTICES

Individually, we expect people to practice daily study and prayer. We encourage journaling which may include attention to dreams, places of resistance and dislikes, intuitions and signs of call. In each mission group, there is a spiritual guide who receives a weekly written report which often includes gratitude, confession and prayers for others. That report is prayed over and returned at the mission group’s weekly meeting with one or two questions which might guide each individual’s spiritual growth.

We also expect people to go on silent retreat at Dayspring or other locations, where they can step away from the incessant demands of our culture and listen more deeply to the still small voice of God. In her book, Journey Inward and Journey Outward, Elizabeth O’Connor writes:

To stand in the silence within oneself, while at the same time relating to external events, is not an easy concept to grasp. It will also be understood differently at different stages of one’s life. At twenty, the course of life flows more easily outward. Forty might be the year of balance, and sixty an age when the movement is more inward. Such generalizations can be dangerous, however, since the tides of every life are different, and sometimes at twenty we have been prepared to receive words another cannot hear at forty, and may never hear These are helpful categories only if they teach us reticence, so that we do not burden the young with what they do not hunger for and therefore cannot receive – nor should we burden the old who do not want confrontation with an inner world.

In addition, we understand communal worship to “hold” the inward journey of all participants in a way we can barely understand. We take the sacraments seriously and understand core membership to be an ordination, so any core member may serve at the communion table. Many people understand their mission group participation to be the primary place for confession and struggle in written reports or aloud during sharing time, so communal worship tends to be a joyful and somewhat informal celebration of our life together.

Each community within Church of the Saviour reserves Dayspring Retreat for two communal retreats a year and we have found the experience of shared silence to be deeply nourishing for the community as well as for the individuals who are there.

inward journeys

Church of the Saviour lives out its call to the inward/outward journey together in different communities. Each has a distinct charism and style, but all share the tradition of deep commitment, listening for God’s leading, and servant ministry in the nation’s capital.

Welcome to Journeys Inward

Craniosacral therapy and integrative bodywork.

Our bodies are designed to continually gravitate towards a dynamic state of balance and ease, but sometimes through injury, illness, trauma or misuse we forget where home is, and the functioning of our body becomes compromised.  Perhaps you had an injury that didn’t quite heal or you have this nagging sense that something is off, but every doctor and test says you should be fine.  Perhaps you’re recovering from trauma and are uncertain how to resolve the myriad of symptoms, or stress is draining your vitality.  It is from this place that we begin to question how to regain our well-being.  It is here that your journey inward, towards a greater sense of wholeness begins.

Healing is the process of recognizing our own limitations and evolving through them. It is a remarkable journey that invites change, ignites courage and ultimately unburdens the soul so that we may move through the world with an ongoing sense of wholeness, and a deeper sense of purpose.  This process permeates the physical, mental and emotional aspects of our being, and provides the guidance for what is needed to rediscover balance, function and ease.

A labyrinth is an ancient symbol that relates to wholeness. It combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. The Labyrinth represents a journey to our own center and back again out into the world.

mandala with lotus flower

The labyrinth and the “journey inward” are both symbols of the healing process.  The journey inward is about building awareness, listening to the stories of our body, and letting go of what no longer serves us. The center of the labyrinth represents arriving home to our authentic self, into this broader and deeper understanding of who we are.  It is from here that we shed our preconceived limitations of body and mind and learn to access our innate gifts and talents.

To complete the journey we must now walk back into the world.  The path is the same, but our perspective has changed.  We have changed.  This time, as we walk back into the world we bring with us a sense of presence and connection to our self, to others, and to the world around us.  And life begins in a whole new way.

Connecting to the Eternal

Contemplation: week 2.

Connecting to the Eternal Wednesday, December 19, 2018

Barbara Holmes, one of our CONSPIRE 2018 teachers, writes about the beautiful diversity of contemplative practices as paths toward the source of our being:

Although Africana and European Christians share a common contemplative history, there are specific differences in expectation and practice. . . .

[While] European mystics and contemplatives often lived in community, they tended to focus on the individual experience of encountering the divine presence. African American contemplatives turned the “inward journey” into a communal experience. . . . The word contemplation includes but does not require silence or solitude. Instead, contemplative practices can be identified in public prayers, meditative dance movements, and musical cues that move the entire congregation toward a communal listening and entry into communion with a living God. . . .

When the word contemplation comes to mind I think of Thomas Merton. . . . But I also want to talk about Martin Luther King Jr. and his combination of interiority and activism, Howard and Sue Bailey Thurman and their inward journeys. I want to present Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Fannie Lou Hamer, Barbara Jordan, and the unknown black congregations that sustained whole communities without fanfare or notice. Like Christianity, contemplative practices come in many forms. . . .

This is how Howard Thurman describes the embodied locus of contemplation:

There is in every person an inward sea, and in that sea is an island and on that island there is an altar and standing guard before that altar is the “angel with the flaming sword.” Nothing can get by that angel to be placed upon that altar unless it has the mark of your inner authority. Nothing passes . . . unless it be a part of the “fluid area of your consent.” This is your crucial link with the Eternal. [1]

. . . As I see it, the human task is threefold. First, the human spirit must connect to the Eternal by turning toward God’s immanence and ineffability with yearning. Second, each person must explore the inner reality of his or her humanity, facing unmet potential and catastrophic failure with unmitigated honesty and grace. Finally, each one of us must face the unlovable neighbor, the enemy outside of our embrace, and the shadow skulking in the recesses of our own hearts. Only then can we declare God’s perplexing and unlikely peace on earth. These tasks require a knowledge of self and others that only comes from the centering down that Thurman advocates. It is not an escape from the din of daily life; rather, it requires full entry into the fray but on different terms. . . . Always, contemplation requires attentiveness to the Spirit of God. . . .

Contemplation is a spiritual practice that has the potential to heal, instruct, and connect us to the source of our being. Thomas Keating describes the shift in reality structures that may occur during contemplative prayer in this way: “our private, self-made worlds come to an end; a new world appears within and around us and the impossible becomes an everyday experience.” [2]

Inspiration for this week’s banner image:  the word contemplation includes but does not require silence or solitude. instead, contemplative practices can be identified in public prayers, meditative dance movements, and musical cues that move . . . toward a communal listening and entry into communion with a living god. —barbara holmes, this year’s theme.

Hypnotherapy Practice

My practice image

First hypnotherapy session

For our first session we will need a bit more time to get to know each other. That's why the initial session takes two hours.

Regular hypnotherapy session

Once you have done your first session, following sessions normally last an hour and a half but we can book longer sessions if needed.

Before meeting Laura I had a completely misinformed understanding of hypnotherapy. It has been a very useful tool in learning to understand the more subconscious parts of myself and has helped me move forward in a time when I felt very stuck. Laura has a gentle and nurturing nature that immediately puts one at ease. I felt safe opening up to her in the sessions and always left knowing that all information shared would be kept confidential. Thank you Laura!   Cami, South Africa
In order to heal, we have to take a journey inside us and into our past, where usually, we refuse to go. Laura has a real gentle way in guiding you there, and help you encounter your path into your healing journey... She has an amazing gift, and I will keep seeing her so she can help me explore and understand this journey better...   Elena Da Cruz, Argentina
Laura is incredibly skilled in her craft and engages with a kind heart. She guided me through a discussion around a subject that has been the source of a lot of fear and anxiety for a couple of years and helped me to see a new perspective that was instantly empowering. I highly recommend a session with Laura to anyone who wants to explore ways to free themselves from old thought patterns.   Amy, USA
I had the privilege of working with Laura Vignoli last year during a particularly painful period in my life. I was coping with PTSD (post traumatic stress syndrome) brought on by the shock suicide of my life partner. Laura helped me clear a path to see more clearly the emotional blocks that were obstructing my ability to heal more and what was holding me back from my desire to write. Laura has a gift of deep insight, natural empathy and exceptional skills as a hypnotherapist. She gently talks you through the session, how the process works, what is required from you as a client and what to expect. Each time Laura took me to a deeper state of hypnosis I felt safe and cocooned. Her warm, encouraging voice, coupled to her loving kindness and innate skills allowed me to relax into the session and release my trauma. She helped me find myself again. I cannot recommend Laura too highly.   Trish, South Africa
Before going for a session with Laura, I had tried one session of hypnotherapy, and I could experience how helpful hypnotherapy was with a breaking up process that I was going through at the time. The session with Laura surprised me in a very positive way. She used a different technique of what I had experienced before (which was the best for that moment) called “parts therapy” which as I understand, it consists in getting in contact with the different parts of ourselves that pull in different directions but that aren’t obvious for our conscious mind. At the moment I was struggling with having the will to do the things that I wanted to do, and Laura helped me realise that there was a part of me that was getting a benefit from not doing what I really wanted, and therefore she guided me to be able to integrate the different parts inside of me so there wasn’t an inner struggle anymore. Laura has a innate ability to guide you through the subconscious mind in a really respectful way and help you realise what is the core of the issue that you are dealing with and gives you practical tools to empower you to solve the problem. I felt very safe with her and I encourage you to try this incredible experience with Laura!   Gabi, Uruguay
I came across Hypnotherapy after a self-hypnosis workshop where I learned about this technique. It gave me a powerful insight into how I could go beyond my analytical mind and rooted beliefs and fears. My sessions with Laura revealed this is a great way to combine meditation and self-reflection through the guide and support of a skilful practitioner. Laura’s mindful combination of traditional therapy tools and various hypnosis have been invaluable, allowing me to overcome challenges at work (unblocking my writing potential) and stay centred and clear through very emotional personal situations. I highly recommend Laura to anyone wishing to deal with a particular issue, or to have hypnotherapy as one of the many tools available to us to look after ourselves.   Diana, Colombia

Research on what's the hypnotic trance

This article explains that there's strong evidence showing that the hypnotic trance is a separate neurophysiological state. Research is still needed to identify all the potential uses for this special state of our mind.

What does hypnosis feel like?

This articles describes really well the typical experiences felt in a hypnotherapy session. Although is focused on addictions it applies to any other situation.

In this interview Roy Hunter talks about some of his experiences as a hypnotherapist using different techniques, including parts therapy and the use of the client's higher self part.

Organization Profile

This work is about rebuilding ourselves, our communities and our world. When the slave ships left the shores of Western African, men, women and children, our ancestors, were on board. There is an abundance of evidence that strongly suggests that the trauma, hurt, pain, and degradation to which our ancestors were subjected, was transferred from generation to generation all the way into the present. Mutated toxicity has evolved into forms of addictions, violence and disrespect infecting our families and communities. The Underground Railroad Training Odyssey takes you back to that time and space of our ancestors, brings you forward to the present, and moves you into a new & future. The journey is designed to open a person’s soul to the genuine possibility of true freedom and power and response-ability that come with it. I wholeheartedly recommend seeing Moon in these quarantine times. She has created a beautiful outdoor space and takes all of the safety precautions to ensure both your safety and hers. I am always thankful to have access to her healing touch but especially so when we are under so much stress.

We have had a lot of tragedy these last years, and then my husband passed away 5 1/2 months ago. I was feeling very closed and stagnant mentally, and Moon totally helped in releasing so much of everything inside-I literally felt as if I had a brain massage when I left. Since my appointment 2 weeks ago, I continue to feel more open, more motivated and more present than I have in a very long time. She is extremely gifted and in tune with exactly what your body needs. I recommend her on the very highest level. I am so grateful to have found her

I'd highly recommend Moon to anyone who is in need of spinal help and I'd especially recommend her to someone who has been in a car accident. Here's why: A couple of months I was sitting in the passanger seat of a car when a truck, going 55 mph, slammed into my door. While I didn't have any broken bones the right side of my body...particularly my rib cage was soar. I started going to a chiropractor and after two weeks I wasn't getting any better more importantly my back was getting tighter and tighter. I was worried that my back was going to "go out" on me. One of my friends suggested I should go see someone who specializes in trama therapy. I got on Yelp and found Journeys Inward and so booked an appointment with Moon. Within one session I noticed results (not joking). Within a little over a week I was able to start biking for excerise and after a month and a half I was able to run once more. Moon is great. She doesn't try to prolong your visits. From day one I've felt that her number one focus is to get me up and running again and she really has done that!!

I highly recommend Journeys Inward! I have been to one session with Moon and I feel that it helped a lot in my quest to heal my tailbone pain after giving birth to my son 2 months ago. She really knows what she is doing. I left feeling very different from when I went in. My shoulders were looser and my back felt more relaxed in general. My tailbone pain had shifted and I could actually feel my muscles in my lower back, as opposed to just having a ball of pain down there for several weeks. Thank you Moon! I will be back soon, I am sure! +++++ I have since been back and am very happy I found Moon. She is amazing! She addressed some other issues when I was there last and it's really made a difference for me in my everyday feeling of well-being!

Moon identifies root causes for (me) persistent body discomforts at the level of ligaments, nerve pathways, musculature, and joint sheaths (all stuff I learned from her) so that my neck: fixed; nerve damage after a collision: fixed; arthritis in my foot causing my whole leg to be wacked: hiking and biking again. A gem of a professional.

Amazing healing hands!!! It,s been a very beautiful and transforming experience and i am full of gratitude. Moon is an excellent therapist and her magical hands have helped me in many ways to recover from a car accident i had 15 years ago.

Photo of Catherine R.

Moon has helped me with back and neck stress- as well as giving me the feeling of really complete rest after the sessions. She is very understanding, intuitive and listens to you and what your body has to say for you. It is a learning experience.

Photo of Sri O.

highly recommended. give yourself some love by letting Moon lay her hands on you if you have the chance! i hurt my back playing basketball this weekend. after going to the chiropractor yesterday and experiencing my body not being ready to let go of its tension through the adjustment, i decided to find a cranio-sacral massage therapist. i did this because years ago my back went our of alignment and i had what felt like a miraculous adjustment occur via the gentle administrations of a cranio-sacral therapist...i was blown away by how such a significant shift could happen via such gentle touch...i was hoping for a similar experience with Moon... blessedly, i was not disappointed! i walked into the appointment with Moon scuttling sideways and hunched over like a hermit crab, and a light-filled hour later walked out standing up straight. she was so tuned in and sensitive as to what was going on inside of me, and her gentle interventions subtly but powerfully helped my poor knots unwind layer by layer. her energy is clear and warm and yes she is very good at what she does.

Photo of Andrew R.

Powerful! - the subtlety and clarity of Moon's work creates deep shifts; through honoring and creating passages for transformation Moon is a true healer. Her professionalism and respect for her clients and her work is immense.

Photo of Sunshine B.

Moon has the most amazing touch - and is very understanding in explaining things, getting to the source of pain, and has a reall investment in making her clients feel better and move better. Back in the day when she did massage, she was THE best massage therapist you could find, and now her real gift comes through in the cranial sacral work that I had done. really helped me with major pain I had due to a herniated disc in my neck. Pricey but so worth it

Dmitri Mendeleev (1834-1907)

Dmitri Mendeleev (1834-1907)

In the late 1860's , Mendeleev began working on his great achievement: the periodic table of the elements. By arranging all of the 63 elements then known by their atomic weights, he managed to organize them into groups possessing similar properties. Where a gap existed in the table, he predicted a new element would one day be found and deduced its properties. And he was right. Three of those elements were found during his lifetime: gallium, scandium, and germanium.

The discovery of these elements provided the strongest support for his periodic table, a cornerstone both in chemistry and in our understanding of how the universe is put together ( reference ). In 1849 , with nothing left for the family at Aremziansk , Maria loaded up the family's belongings and headed for Moscow. At this point the family included Maria, Dmitri, and Elizabeth (Dmitri's older sister). In Moscow, they entered a climate of considerable political unrest, which made the university reluctant to admit anyone from outside of Moscow. Mendeleev was rejected. Maria did not give up, however, and the family headed for St. Petersburg .

Again, they encountered similar turmoil but this time they found a friend of Ivan's working at the Pedagogical Institute, his father's school. With a little persuasion, Dmitri was allowed to take the entrance exams, which he passed, not with honors but well enough to be admitted to the science teacher training program on a full scholarship. He entered the university in the fall of 1850 . Maria died shortly after Dmitri's acceptance at St. Petersburg, followed a few short months later by Elizabeth; both died from tuberculosis. Mendeleev was left alone to face his work at the university, but was to later eulogize his mother in his book on Solutions .

"This investigation is dedicated to the memory of a mother by her youngest offspring. Conducting a factory she could educate him only by her own work. She instructed by example, corrected with love, and in order to devote him to science she left Siberia with him, spending thus her last resources and strength."

"When dying she said, ' Refrain from illusions, insist on work and not on words. Patiently search divine and scientific truth .' She understood how often dialectical methods deceive, how much there is still to be learned, and how, with the aid of science without violence, with love but firmness, all superstition, untruth and error are removed, bringing in their stead the safety of undiscovered truth, freedom for further development, general welfare, and inward happiness. Dmitri Mendeleev regards as sacred a mother's dying words."

Dmitri fell right into his work at St. Petersburg. His studies progressed rapidly until his third year. At that point he was struck with an illness that caused him to be bedridden for the next year. He continued his studies, however, with professors and fellow students visiting him to give him assignments, etc. Mendeleev graduated on time and was awarded the medal of excellence for being first in his class.

Dmitri's illness did not improve. His doctor suggested that he had tuberculosis and that, at most, he had two years to live providing he moved to a more suitable climate. Mendeleev already had his life's ambitions in mind and, hoping to extend his life as long as possible, he moved to Simferopol in the Crimean Peninsula near the Black Sea in 1855 as chief science master of the gymnasium. He was 21 years old . At this point in his life he was driven by "the vision of the Russian people whom he knew he could aid through science." Needless to say, his move to the south was very beneficial. He progressively regained his strength to the point where the doctors found no sign of tuberculosis in his system.

Mendeleev Table of toxic Elements

In 1856 , Mendeleev returned to St. Petersburg and defended his master's thesis: " Research and Theories on Expansion of Substances due to Heat ." Following his masters program, Dmitri focused his life on his career of teaching and research. He was essentially a teacher devoted to his work and to his students; he was next a lover of his country and of his fellow men. The first led to his books and the periodic table, while the latter gave rise to his studies of chemical technology and the organization of Russia's industries, agriculture, transport meteorology and metrology.

In 1859 , he was assigned by the Minister of Public Instruction to go abroad to study and develop scientific and technological innovations. Between 1859 and 1861 he studied the densities of gases with Regnault in Paris and the workings of the spectroscope with Kirchoff in Heidelberg. He also pursued studies of capillarity and surface tension that led to his theory of "absolute boiling point," later known as critical temperature. While in Heidelberg he made the acquaintance of A.P. Borodin, a chemist who was to achieve greater reknown as a composer. In 1860 at the Chemical Congress at Karlsruhe, Mendeleev had the opportunity to hear Cannizzaro discuss his work on atomic weights. These people greatly influenced the work which Mendeleev would pursue the rest of his life.

Following his trip abroad, the Russian chemist returned to his homeland where he settled down to a life of teaching and research in St. Petersburg . In 1863 he was named Professor of Chemistry at the Technological Institute and, in 1866 , he became Professor of Chemistry at the University and was made Doctor of Science for his dissertation " On the Combinations of Water with Alcohol ". As will be seen, his research findings were expansive and beneficial to the Russian people. Dmitri was always in touch with the classroom. Much of his lab work, including that on the periodic chart, occurred in his spare time following his lectures. He truly enjoyed educating the people, and they, in turned enjoyed his efforts: . ..For me it was a revelation, a beautiful improvisation, a stimulant to the intellect which left deep traces on my development.

For those pursuing higher academic goals, like Dmitri Mendeleev, it's essential to have the right resources to " write my dissertation ," ensuring that one's work leaves a lasting impact on their field of study.

Mendeleev not only taught in the university classrooms but anywhere he travelled. Many excerpts discuss his journeys by train where he would travel third class with the mouzhiks (peasants). It was on those journeys that he would share his findings about agriculture with the peasants over a cup of tea. The admiration that Mendeleev had for the people of Russia was reciprocated by the people. On the trains the mouzhiks would all gather round to see and talk with the man. The university students also adored him. Crowds of students would fill lecture halls to hear him speak of chemistry.

For Mendeleev, science was always the most important subject, but in that time period of unrest, just as today, science could be expanded to the realms of politics and social inequality. Mendeleev was not afraid to express his views on these topics:

There exists everywhere a medium in things, determined by equilibrium. The Russian proverb says, ' Too much salt or too little salt is alike an evil .' It is the same in political and social relations... It is the function of science to discover the existence of a general reign of order in nature and to find the causes governing this order. And this refers in equal measure to the relations of man, social and political, and to the entire universe as a whole.

These profound thoughts of order led him to the discovery of the periodic law, among other things, but also led to his resignation from the University on August 17, 1890 . Throughout his life he witnessed a country repressed and in turmoil. As he grew older and more famous, he used his new-found prestige and power to try to speak out against repression. The most all penetrating spirit before which will open the possibility of tilting not tables, but planets, is the spirit of free human inquiry. Believe only in that. His resignation from the university came as the result of carrying a student petition to the Minister of Education . The Minister refused to acknowledge the requests, stating that Mendeleev should keep to teaching and not involve himself with students and politics. Mendeleev's final lecture at the University of St. Petersburg was broken up by police who feared that he might lead the students in an uprising.

Dmitri's personal life also appears to have been in turmoil for many years. In 1863 , with the heavy influence of his sister Olga, Dmitri married Feozva Nikitchna Lascheva. They had two children, a boy named Volodya, and a daughter named Olga. Mendeleev never really loved Feozva and actually spent little time with her. One story suggests that, at one point in their life together, Feozva asked Mendeleev if he was married to her or to science; his response was that he was married to both unless that was bigamy, in which case he was married to science.

In January 1882 , he divorced Feozva so he could marry his niece's best friend, Anna Ivanova Popova. According to the Orthodox Church, Mendeleev was officially a bigamist; however, he was so famous in Russia that the Czar said " Mendeleev has two wives, yes, but I have only one Mendeleev ". Anna was considerably younger than Dmitri but the two loved each other very much and were together until his death. They had four children: Liubov, Ivan, and twins Vassili and Maria. Anna also had considerable influence over Mendeleev's views on art, and he was elected to the Academy of Arts for both his insightful criticism and his painting.

As he grew older it also became apparent that personal appearance became less and less significant to him. Many stories abound relating to the idea that in his later years, Dmitri would only cut his hair and beard once a year. He would not even cut it by request of the tsar. One observer stated, "Every hair acted separate from the others." It becomes apparent that, in most respects, work came first for Dmitri Mendeleev.

Besides his work on general chemical concepts as discussed earlier, Mendeleev spent much of his time working to improve technological advances of Russia. Many of his research findings dealt with agricultural chemistry, oil refining, and mineral recovery. Dmitri was also one of the founding members of the Russian Chemical Society in 1868, and helped open the lines of communication between scientists in Europe and the United States.

Mendeleev also pursued studies on the properties and behavior of gases at high and low pressures, which led to his development of a very accurate differential barometer and further studies in meteorology. He also became interested in balloons, which led to a rather perilous adventure in 1887 . In order to observe the solar eclipse above Klin, he made a solo ascent, without any prior experience; while his family was rather concerned, he paid no attention to controlling the balloon until after he had completed his observations, at which time he figured out how to land his conveyance.

No law of nature, however general , has been established all at once; its recognition has always been preceded by many presentiments. The establishment of a law, moreover, does not take place when the first thought of it takes form, or even when its significance is recognized, but only when it has been confirmed by the results of the experiment. The man of science must consider these results as the only proof of the correctness of his conjectures and opinions.

In 1866, Newlands published a relationship of the elements entitled the "Law of Octaves". Mendeleev's ideas were similar to those of Newlands but Dmitri had more data and felt that Newlands had not gone far enough in his research. By 1869 , the Russian chemist had assembled detailed descriptions of more than 60 elements and, on March 6, 1869 a formal presentation was made to the Russian Chemical Society entitled "The Dependence Between the Properties of the Atomic Weights of the Elements." Unfortunately, Mendeleev was ill and the presentation was given by his colleague Professor Menshutken . There were eight points to his presentation:

  • The elements, if arranged according to their atomic weights, exhibit an apparent periodicity of properties.
  • Elements which are similar as regards their chemical properties have atomic weights which are either of nearly the same value (eg. Pt, Ir, Os) or which increase regularly (eg. K, Ru, Cs).
  • The arrangement of the elements, or of groups of elements in the order of their atomic weights, corresponds to their so-called valencies, as well as, to some extent, to their distinctive chemical properties; as is apparent among other series in that of Li, Be, Ba, C, N, O, and Sn.
  • The elements which are the most widely diffused have small atomic weights.
  • The magnitude of the atomic weight determines the character of the element, just as the magnitude of the molecule determines the character of a compound body.
  • We must expect the discovery of many as yet unknown elements-for example, elements analogous to aluminum and silicon- whose atomic weight would be between 65 and 75.
  • The atomic weight of an element may sometimes be amended by a knowledge of those of its contiguous elements. Thus the atomic weight of tellurium must lie between 123and 126, and cannot be 128.
  • Certain characteristic properties of elements can be foretold from their atomic weights.

On November 29, 1870 , Mendeleev took his concept even further by stating that it was possible to predict the properties of undiscovered elements. He then proceeded to make predictions for three new elements (eka-aluminum, eka-boron and eka-silicon) and suggested several properties of each, including density, radii, and combining ratios with oxygen, among others. The science world was perplexed, and many scoffed at Mendeleev's predictions. It was not until November, 1875 , when the Frenchman Lecoq de Boisbaudran discovered one of the predicted elements (eka-aluminum) which he named Gallium, that Dmitri's ideas were taken seriously. The other two elements were discovered later and their properties were found to be remarkably similar to those predicted by Mendeleev. These discoveries, verifying his predictions and substantiating his law, took him to the top of the science world. He was 35 years old when the initial paper was presented.

Throughout the remainder of his life, Dmitri Mendeleev received numerous awards from various organizations including the Davy Medal from the Royal Society of England in 1882 , the Copley Medal, the Society's highest award, in 1905 , and honorary degrees from universities around the world. Following his resignation from the University of St. Petersburg, the Russian government in 1893 appointed him Director of the Bureau of Weights and Measures. This was believed to have been done to keep down public disapproval of the government. Mendeleev continued to be a popular social figure until his death. ( reference )

Mendeleev rewrote each edition of Principles of Chemistry , including all new scientific data-particularly confirmations of the periodic law-and reanalyzing difficulties that had arisen to hinder its confirmation (inert gases, radioactivity, radioactive and rare-earth elements )"
