Drive I-95! America’s East Coast Highway
The east coast’s most infamous highway–i-95.
Road trips are back again because traveling in the security of your own car and visiting friendly small-town America, it brings back the way America used to be and the way we would like it to be again. To help those who travel up and down the East Coast, Drive I-95 is a new style of guidebook.
It combines colorful easy-to-follow pictorial maps and fun stories, eliminating the trepidation of a road trip down America s busiest highway. Travelers can look ahead exit-by-exit to see which motels and gas stations are coming up, where the radars trap are, or where to stop for a good homemade meal.
By Melissa Vitti
Excerpt from Drive I-95: Where Lena Blackburne’s Baseball Rubbing Mud Comes from
Exit 1: New Jersey Mud If you are a baseball nut, look down at the Delaware River as you cross over it here because this is where the famous Lena Blackburne’s Baseball Rubbing Mud comes from.
“In 1938 when an umpire complained to Blackburne (a third base coach for the old Philadelphia Athletics) about the condition of the balls which were rubbed with mud made of water and dirt from whatever field they were playing on, he went looking in the Delaware River until he found some muck (the whereabouts of the mud hole is still a dark secret) with a perfect texture — a cross between chocolate pudding and whipped cold cream.
Nowadays, every major and most minor league team in the US uses this mud to mask the ball’s shine and improve the pitcher’s grip. The muds source was willed to a close friend, John Haas, who had worked with Blackburne on his mud-finding exploits.
“Haas eventually turned over the enterprise to his son-in-law, Burns Bintliff. Burns, in turn, passed it on to his son Jim and his family. Other kinds of mud and even mechanical methods have been tried to de-slick baseballs, but they couldn’t make the grade — only good old New Jersey mud will do.
Stan Posner and Sandra Phillips-Posner
Sandra Phillips-Posner is a native New Yorker who began her career as an art teacher of all things. When her first book, Smart Shopping Montreal , hit the bestseller list almost 19 years ago, her career focus switched from art educator to media darling.
After the success of her first book, she was offered her own column in Montreal’s newspaper The Gazette . She spreads her time between writing, lecturing, and appearances on TV and talk radio programs.
Stan Posner has owned his own computer consulting business since 1984. He’s worked with Raytheon, Honda, and Atomic Energy of Canada to name a few. Like his wife, he has also spent time educating at Concordia University where he taught actuarial math.
His combined love of computers and travel has made him McGill University’s computer guru for their Travelsmart publishing company.
It is easy to see how their passions brought together have created an informative and fun way to travel. To prepare for the book, the two spent ten hours a day together in a car for eight weeks, and even after 27 years of marriage, they are still crazy about each other.
Road Trippin
Drive I-95 , includes exit-by-exit information, maps, history, trivia, and guides crucial for any road trip up and down the east coast. When I embarked on a six-day road trip with two of my friends for a spring-break drive from New Jersey to South Carolina, the book became our most important reference. For three college students on a budget, the guide helped us navigate our way to Myrtle Beach.
We packed up our Jeep Liberty with our bags full of spring break attire, pillows, and CDs to start the journey. Besides the important role of the driver, the second most important became the passenger (whoever called shotgun at the most recent stop) to play the role of DJ and tour guide, keeping the Drive I-95 close at hand.
As you open the book, there’s a chart of radio stations categorized by city and genre on the inside cover. Considering we brought what we thought was every CD ever made with us, we figured this wouldn’t be necessary for our purposes. We were obviously wrong. By hour six, in the great state of Virginia, I was elected to find anything but country, and as you can imagine the chart became particularly useful.
The Complete I-95 Guide
The first 50 yellow pages of the book include a complete color-coded and comprehensive set of maps of all the states. The exits are depicted much like the road signs you see on the highway with marked stops for gas, food, and lodging.
But what you won’t find on a regular map is the great symbol of a police car where expected speed traps are (incredibly important for three New England students trying to get to a beach because they haven’t seen anything but snow in four months).
After the yellow map section of Drive I-95 comes 88 pages chock-full of information. Everything you could possibly want to know between Massachusetts and Georgia is in this section. For those continuing to Florida, the book starts again this time with a blue section of maps followed by the pages of information of the following states.
For our purposes, the 88 pages of information became a constant conversation piece in our Jeep Liberty. Did you know&.? became the most frequented phrase, especially during the larger stretches of the big states like North Carolina.
Beyond the blurbs about each most visible attraction at every exit, there are interesting little anecdotes spread throughout. In the North Carolina section is a short explanation of the origin of the hush puppy snack.
Cooks would throw a piece of fried dough to the dogs in the kitchen to quiet them down or hush puppies.
South of the Border on I-95
If you’ve ever driven through the states of North and South Carolina, you’re familiar with South of the Border. There’s a constant reminder as you drive counting down the miles via tacky billboards reminding you how much further until you reach South of the Border (also known as Exit 1 once you cross into South Carolina). The Posners give the attraction a very fair assessment considering all the hype that is given.
You could only have missed the billboards if you are a sight-impaired driver. This tacky Mexican-themed town is famous for every kid who has ever read the road.
“What you will find, if you dare to get off, is a Pedroland amusement park, 11 souvenir shops, 6 food joints, 2 gas stations, 100 campsites, and a 300-room motor inn sporting carports and an indoor heated or outdoor swimming pool.
“You can play indoor golf at the Gulf of Mexico or view the whole site from the ride in the glass elevator to the top of the 200-foot tall Sombrero Tower. Olé!
Despite the warnings in the book, we had to check it out. The results were as expected just as dismal as the reviews. We had to chuckle as we pulled into the ghost town of bright tourist buildings and life-size sombreros.
We took pictures with the artificial pink flamingos and purchased our 3SOB key chains before we set out to finish the last leg of our trip. We reached Myrtle Beach safe and sound after 11 hours in the car. All in all, the trip was everything we expected and thanks to Drive I-95 at our fingertips we were able to avoid the unexpected.
It is easy to see why Drive I-95 received the Foreword Magazines Book of the Year Award and The Benjamin Franklin Award . Even if you don’t embark on a road trip, the user guide is a fun read for anyone wanting to learn more about the states from Massachusetts to Florida.

2 thoughts on “ Drive I-95! America’s East Coast Highway ”
Hello friends and fellow travelers: Years ago when i was driving big rig – I happened across a handy book at a Mom & Pop Truck stop that gave listing of restaurants, Walmart’s (at the time) drug stores and major shopping needs. from Florida to Maine on I-95. Of course it would change year by year and I annotated my copy of that book until I had a super handy text. Then fate took the wheel and I became ill, the text was lost to time and another driver. Am looking for “any” text that might do something of the same nowadays for I-95 or any of the main cross country highways. Thank you, Mark

I-95 is the main highway that runs along the East Coast of the U.S. Since it is almost parallel to the Atlantic Ocean, you're never too far away from the beach on an I-95 road trip. Some of the major cities you'll pass through include Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington D.C., Richmond, Savannah, Jacksonville, and Miami. Here's some of the top attractions to see along I-95, from Florida to Maine.
1534 Eastern Ave, Baltimore, MD, US
Tattoo Museum
At the Tattoo Museum, you can learn about the art of tattooing and even walk away with a tattoo of your own. The artists here are highly respected.
The Royal Sonesta Harbor Court, Grammercy Mansion, and the Wayside Inn Bed and Breakfast are among the coziest hotels you'll find in Baltimore.
1001 Longwood Rd, Kennett Square, PA, US
Longwood Gardens
One of the best gardens in all of the U.S. is just off I-95. Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square is worth visiting any time of year to see the ever-changing blooms. You might be surprised to learn that the bathrooms generated a buzz of their own, winning an award for being the best public restroom in 2014. Check out the lush, plant-covered curved walls.
41 Adams Dam Road, Wilmington, DE, US
Brandywine Creek State Park
You aren't in Delaware for very long while traveling I-95, but you should stop to see a serene bit of the state. Just three short miles north of Wilmington is Brandywine Creek State Park. The beautiful natural landscape includes 19th-century stone walls that add to the ambiance. Don't miss the tulip poplar forest and nature center when you visit.
19 S 22nd St, Philadelphia, PA, US
The Mutter Museum
Next up on the trip is Philadelphia, and if you have time, spend several hours in the city. For an offbeat Philly gem, check out the The Mutter Museum, which features macabre medicinal history.
Chestnut Street between 5th and 6th Streets, Philadelphia, PA, US
Independence Hall
When in Philadelphia, visit Independence Hall to see the Liberty Bell and the building where the Declaration of Independence was signed. Arrive early to get your ticket for a guided tour for free, or purchase tickets online for a small fee. The tickets are timed and you have to go through security, so plan accordingly. In the evening, the tours are self guided—if you know your history already, you can avoid the crowds then.
There are some nice hotels in Philadelphia if you decide to extend your stay. The Morris House Hotel, the Franklin Hotel at Independence Park, and the Warwick Hotel are all phenomenal options.
Log Cabin Road, New Brunswick, NJ, US
Bamboo Forest
Like Delaware, I-95 doesn't give you much time in New Jersey, but it's worth making a stop. The Bamboo Forest in New Brunswick is close to the highway and offers a uniquely beautiful backdrop for a short walk.
37 Christie St, Edison, NJ, US
World's Largest Lightbulb
Standing 13 feet and weighing eight tons, the World's Largest Lightbulb is an interesting roadside attraction. Located near Thomas Edison's former lab in Menlo Park, the lightbulb makes for a cool photo op and even shines at night. Nearby, you can tour a small museum dedicated to Edison and his many inventions.
5 Av To Central Park W, 59 St To 110 St, New York, NY, US
Central Park
There are too many incredible sights to see in New York City, especially if you're just passing through. But, if you happen to have a day or two to spare on your I-95 road trip, here are a few of the essential sights: Central Park, the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art.
99 Margaret Corbin Dr, New York, NY, US
The Cloisters Museum & Gardens
As you head north of Manhattan, check out the Cloisters Museum and Gardens. This French monastery makes you feel like you are stepping into Medieval Europe. It's easy to see why New Yorkers come here to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
2 Lighthouse Road, New Haven, CT, US
New Haven Lighthouse
In Connecticut, make a stop at the New Haven Lighthouse. Not only is there a picturesque lighthouse to see here, you'll also find a park and a beach.
67 River Rd, CT, US
Gillette Castle State Park
If you have time for a short detour, Gillette Castle State Park is just off I-95. It feels like you're walking around the ruins of a Medieval fortress. Built by a rich, eccentric actor, the castle has several unusual features that make it a unique stop.
75 Greenmanville Ave, Mystic, CT, US
Mystic Seaport
If you get hungry, pull over at Mystic Seaport and head to Mystic Pizza—this pizza joint inspired the 1980s film by the same name. Mystic Seaport is the nation's foremost maritime museum, which is not surprising since this "museum" is actually a port area with multiple buildings. The 19 acres of grounds include a 19th-century maritime village recreation, a working shipyard, and over 500 historic watercraft. You'll find four National Historic Landmark vessels, including an 1841 whale ship that is the U.S.'s oldest commercial ship.
44 Ochre Point Avenue, Newport, RI, US
The Breakers
Once you hit Rhode Island, be sure to spend some time in Newport, a gorgeous coastal city. If you can only do one thing, visit the Breakers—it's like America's version of Downton Abbey . Stroll along the Cliff Walk and check out the numerous Gilded Age mansions in this decadent neighborhood.
Newport is a nice spot to pull over for the night, with good accommodations like Forty 1° North, the Ivy Lodge bed and breakfast, and the Mill Street Inn.
5 Water St, Fall River, MA, US
Battleship Cove
Take a detour from I-95 across the state line into Massachusetts, to visit Fall River's Battleship Cove, which features the world's largest collection of World War II naval warships. You don't have to be a military history buff to marvel at the huge ships.
161 O'Connell St, Providence, RI, US
The Big Blue Bug
Once you are back on I-95, you soon find The Big Blue Bug in Providence, another quirky roadside photo op.
Providence has some nice hotels as well. The Christopher Dodge House and the Hilton Providence are great places to stay for the night.
21 Merchants Row, Boston, MA, US
Faneuil Hall Marketplace
It won't be long before you find yourself in Boston. Grab a bite to eat at the historic Faneuil Hall Marketplace. You'll find so many delicious food vendors in this historic hall, it will be hard to pick just one. Do you want pizza, clam chowder, or a classic "lobstah" roll? Sample one or all.
1 Central Wharf, Boston, MA, US
New England Aquarium
The New England Aquarium is considered one of the U.S.'s best aquariums. Arguably, the most popular feature of the New England Aquarium is the Giant Ocean Tank, the 200,000-gallon cylindrical tank that simulates a Caribbean coral reef. Constructed of concrete and surrounded by a walkway with 52 windows, the tanks allows visitors the ability to peep at the sea life from virtually every angle.
The Revere Hotel, the Liberty Hotel, and the Bertram Inn are just a few of the fabulous hotel options in Boston.
55 Davis Square, Somerville, MA, US
Museum of Bad Art (MOBA)
Before leaving Massachusetts, pull over at the Museum of Bad Art (MOBA) in the funky town of Somerville to indulge in some of the worst cultural output the U.S. has ever been unfortunate enough to witness.
40 Park Ave, Hampton, NH, US
Memorial to a Witch
The New Hampshire stretch of I-95 is relatively short but offers a couple of cool places to visit. First, check out the Memorial to a Witch in Hampton. It's a simple unmarked stone monument dedicated to Eunice "Goody" Cole, known as "the witch of Hampton," who was accused of witchcraft in 1656. That ruling was eventually overturned—in 1938.
2300 Lafayette Rd, Portsmouth, NH, US
Water Country
For less morbid fun, there's Water Country in Portsmouth, which is worth a few hours, especially if you're traveling with kids in summer. The park offers slides, whirlpools, water playgrounds, wave pools, and more.
Book a room at the Anchorage Inn and Suites, The Exeter Inn, the Coachman Inn, or one of the other nice hotels in Portsmouth for the night.
I-95 officially ends at the Houlton–Woodstock Border Crossing. The route continues into Canada, where you can cross the border into New Brunswick. If you want to have an international journey after this epic tour of the East Coast, just keep driving.
