50 Words or Less

The Wilson Staff FG Tour V6 irons are beautiful, sweet-feeling players irons with sneaky upgrades that make them easier to hit.

wilson fg tour irons specs

Introduction

In the FG Tour irons, Wilson Staff has quietly built one of the best lines of irons in golf.  Each iteration has offered a substantial performance upgrade while maintaining the look and feel of a traditional players iron.  The FG Tour V6 builds on the tungsten weighting used in the FG Tour V4 to take the performance to an even higher level.

wilson fg tour irons specs

Beautiful .  From the moment I unboxed these irons, I was taken by their classic good looks.  Wilson Staff went with a high-polish chrome for the FG Tour V6, and it gives them great visual pop.  To balance the shine, they kept the graphics and colors very understated – primarily black with the smallest splash of gold.

At address, these irons have a small profile with thin soles and top lines and modest heel-to-toe lengths.  In short, they’re everything that a better player wants to see .

wilson fg tour irons specs

Sound & Feel

As good as the FG Tour V6 irons look, they feel even better.  These irons are soft and sweet when you catch the ball perfectly, and they provide excellent feedback .  There’s a clear gradient of feel: small mishits still feel pretty good, big misses return a firm rebuke to your hands.

wilson fg tour irons specs

Performance

There are two things that make the Wilson Staff FG Tour V6 top performers: tungsten weighting and an inspired choice of shaft.

Wilson Staff first showed us the tungsten sole weighting in the FG Tour V4.  In that set, the long irons had a weight in the middle of the sole and the short irons didn’t.  The FG Tour V6 ups the ante by adding a third configuration.  Now the long irons have tungsten weights in the heel and toe to promote high launch and forgiveness.  The middle irons have the weight in the center of the sole to promote easy launch, and the scoring irons go without tungsten to keep the ball flight low.

While we remain huge advocates of being fit for the best shaft for your swing, credit has to be given to Wilson Staff for choosing the Dynamic Gold AMT as the stock shaft.  You can read the full review HERE , but the short version is that the AMT gives you Dynamic Gold’s trademark stability and control while reducing the weight as the clubs get longer.  The lighter shaft, paired with the tungsten weighting, makes for some of the longest, easiest-to-hit long irons in any players set.

wilson fg tour irons specs

The Wilson Staff FG Tour V6 irons are a perfect next step in a great line of irons.  They retain the best parts of the previous iterations – beautiful looks, pure forged feel, and shot control – while adding a new element that makes the long irons easier to hit.  This set needs to be on the must try list for all good and aspiring players.

From what I saw when placed side by side, the V6s have a thinner top line and a slightly thinner sole than the V4. They have added 2 grams of tungsten to the 4-7 irons, and they split the tungsten on the 4 and 5 iron. And yes, the shaft is different.

Putting aside the shafts, will the V6s play that much differently from V4s from 6 iron down? I would think the slightly wider sole of the V4 would give just that little bit more forgiveness. The 4 and 5 irons, the split tungsten will probably maintain club head stability for the V6s.

Nice improvements, but probably not that much change.

' src=

No, I don’t think there will be large differences from the 6-PW.

' src=

Hi Matt I seem to remember that you played the V2s for a season at least I remember your review was part of why I bought a set. V2s feel solid and I have loved them. Do you think the V6s are a big improvement? The soles are more rounded now did you notice that through the grass? I do feel like sometimes the V2s get hung up a little. Is the tungsten that noticeable? They look great they look a little smaller and thinner than my V2s.

At the risk of sounding too clever, define “big”. I think the V6 is better looking, as you mention, and I think the rounded edges do create nicer turf interaction. The tungsten does improve the performance in measurable ways, but it’s not night and day. I think the V6 certainly merits a head to head test with your V2s.

' src=

How would you say these compare to the Cobra King Tour (or previous Fly-Z+ Forged which is essentially the same exact thing)? Mostly interested in a comparison of forgiveness. Thanks!

I haven’t tested the Cobra King Tour, so I can’t give a conclusive answer.

' src=

And compared to Titleist cb 716?

I’d take the Wilson’s 10 times out of 10. Better feel, more forgiveness. Easy choice.

Thanks for the answer. I have two options, these Wilson irons for 750 euros or Titleist ap2 714 for 350, both new. I don’t know which one I should get.

' src=

I haven’t played Wilson irons in a long, long time but these give me a whole new perspective about them. I really like the fact that the lofts aren’t jacked-up and the rounded soles are a plus. Will have to give these a shot, if I can find them at a big box store in my area. Don’t know if my 14 HDCP will be enough to make me want to buy them though.

' src=

Wally try the f5s…they are higher launching and a tad more forgiving

' src=

Just got the V6 and been playing Wilson for last few years and they get better each time. Had the V2s, and still have a set of C100, and C200s and the V6 with Wilsons KBS Tour 80 Shaft, great, soft, workable, and strong and long. I also get the Triton Dr. which after a little work is long and straight, very straight. Wilson is back.

' src=

What club is easier to hit and more forgiving, The Wilson V6 or the Hogan Ft. Worth Irons?

I haven’t tested them head to head, but I’m inclined to say that it’s the V6.

' src=

I play he Callaway Apex irons with the recoil shaft. Thinking about the v-6 Wilson irons. How do think they compare ?

With the caveat that I haven’t tested them head to head: I think the Apex may be a bit longer and it will likely feel hotter. The V6 has a more traditional forged feel. V6 probably a little more traditional looking.

' src=

Matt. Are these irons more a players iron or a GI iron?

It’s definitely a players iron, but with some forgiveness.

' src=

How would you say these compare to the 718 AP2s in terms of forgiveness, feel, and length?

I have a full review of the 718 AP2 here: https://pluggedingolf.com/titleist-718-ap2-irons-review/

The lofts of the V6’s are weaker but not by an amount that I think would affect distance significantly.

Would you say one is more forgiving than the other?

I’d put them both in the same ball park.

' src=

Hi Matt, I’m playing 20 hdc. Do you think the Wilson V6 is a good option or can you recommend something else?

At a 20 handicap, the V6 is probably a little ambitious, but there’s nothing wrong with that as long as it’s an informed choice. If you want something that’s more forgiving, I’d consider the C300 irons from Wilson or the PING G410.

' src=

How would these stack up forgiveness-wise versus the original PXG 0311s? And how about versus the Apex Pro 16s?

Which model of the 0311? Compared to the Apex Pro, I think the V6 would be pretty similar in forgiveness.

' src=

for a 15-18 handicap, how doe the Wilson V6 compare the the new Hohan PTX Pro for forgiveness ?

Those two irons are comparable in forgiveness. 15-18 is probably the very high end of what I’d recommend for those irons.

' src=

How would these compare to your iBlades or the i25’s that you gamed for some time. Looking specifically at forgiveness and blade length. Thanks in advance

Without having them in front of me, I’m going to pass on commenting on blade length. The forgiveness isn’t much different from one to the next, but I would probably give an edge to the i25.

' src=

I have taken a 12 years break from golf, the clubs I have are Titleist DCI981 and Ping S59. How will the V6 compare to 981 and S59 in forgiveness?

You’ll find the V6 easier to hit your current irons.

Perfect, finally someone able to help me out. Tried asking a lot of others if the V6 will be more forgiving than my current irons but not too many people I have checked with have no experience with the older clubs. I used to be a solid mid- to low- 90s shooter before the break with decent driver and iron shots. My shot game was my weakness, average 40 and above putts per round. 4-putted the 18th to score my lowest round of 90.

Found a decent used set of the V6 online, unfortunately, the seller backed out on the day of the transaction. Then bought a used set of Z585, played a round with them and immediately fall in love with them. However, I still want to get a set of the V6 for their clean classic look and the traditional loft. The V6 is on sale lately, after hearing your confirmation of the V6 is easier to hit than my currents, I will seriously consider to pull the trigger!

' src=

Aloha Matt Been a big fan playing Wilson Staff irons and still use my Goosenecks. Started with FG-17, Fluid Feel and Ultra System 45 irons and still pull out the FG-17 when my swing and timing etc are off, gets me hitting the ball correctly again. When hitting the V6 irons will they give me a consistent yardage number like a blade and do you have to guard against the ball going left when hit well? much mahalo’s

The V6 will be more forgiving than a blade in terms of launch angle and ball speed. They may have more offset than a blade (depends on the model), which could lead to hitting the ball left.

' src=

Hi Matt: I am a 12 – 14 handicap (main issue is putting). I have been using Cleveland GC 16 irons for 8 years and think it is time to upgrade. I love the look of the V6 but are they beyond my ability to hit consistently? Any and all comments are appreciated.

I would suggest going to a fitter and trying the new Staff Model CB irons. If you can hit those well, you can handle the V6.

A tangible improvement from Wilson in the better player iron category, blending feel and forgiveness with excellent distance control and appealing looks. There really is little to dislike.

These irons excel in every area of looks and performance the low handicapper is looking for

They might not go the distance you’d hope given the high lofts

Golf Monthly's Wilson Staff FG Tour V6 irons review, a new better player model said to offer feel and distance control to the better player

Wilson Staff’s new FG Tour V6 irons take the technology found in the V4 model and improve upon it to make them more user-friendly for the better player. It's no wonder Padraig Harrington won the Portugal Masters this year in his first event using them.

This is especially the case in the long irons, where not only is there an increase in the amount of tungsten used (20g up from 18g) but this tungsten has been split, with 12g positioned in the toe and 8g in the heel.

wilson_staff_fg_tour_v6_4_and_7_iron_weight_web

Not only does this make the 3, 4 and 5-irons more forgiving due to the extra perimeter weighting, it also reduces the draw bias these irons tend to have, making them easier to hit straighter on long approach shots.

Wilson Staff launch FG Tour V6 irons

The first thing that strikes you is how beautiful these irons look from every angle. They’re certainly not in your face, quite understated and classy, with a premium polished finish and subtle orange details.

The profile is clearly aimed at the competent ball striker – the minimal offset and thin topline along with the short blade length may be intimidating to the mid-handicapper, but if you can muster well-struck iron shots relatively consistently, you are rewarded in a multitude of ways.

wilson_staff_fg_tour_v6_7_iron_address_web

The first is through excellent distance control, assisted by the perimeter weighting that reduces the club inclination to twist on mishits. Our testing showed an incredibly tight front-to-back dispersion, which means it will be easier to predict how far the ball will travel – something that is imperative when going flag hunting.

The second is the superb feel these irons offer. It’s soft, like you would expect from a forged club, but also with a hint of power and explosiveness. You’d hope you get a bit of this given the lofts of these irons are very traditional indeed – in fact they’re some of the highest you’re likely to find on the market (the 7-iron is 35°). Yet, these irons aren’t short in length – they pack plenty of punch despite their elevated loft angles.

This shows simply that these irons are not geared to provide out and out distance. More so, they should appeal to those who want more consistent distances from their irons without sacrificing huge amounts of forgiveness.

The 20 Second Intro

Model:  Wilson Staff FG Tour V6 Irons Available Lofts:  4-GW Stock Shaft:  Dynamic Gold AMT (Ascending Mass Technology) Retail Price:  $999.99 Availability:  1/9/2017

Don’t call it a comeback.

Every time Wilson Staff releases a new iron, cyberspace crackles with “Is Wilson Back?” stories. It’s trite, lame and a wholly invalid question, and it needs to stop.

If you’ve been paying any attention at all, then you know Wilson Staff has been back for at least four years now, cranking out some of the strongest irons across every category in the game (If you want the full story, check out MyGolfSpy’s Wilson Staff “trilogy” ). The company known for decades as the forged darlings of pro-level equipment is on a roll, and that roll is covered with buttah .

Back in 2012, Wilson’s FG Tour V2 irons received one of the highest ratings of any iron ever reviewed by MyGolfSpy . The follow-up V4 irons, with tungsten weighting to improve forgiveness, were equally strong and gamed by Wilson Staffers Kevin Streelman, Troy Merritt and Padraig Harrington.

And not for nothing, they’re one of the two best irons I’ve ever gamed.

Can Wilson make it 3 in a row with the FG Tour V6?

wilson-fg-tour-v6-irons-2

More Cow Bell!

Actually, make that “More Tungsten!”

There are several differences between the new V6’s and the older V4’s; many are cosmetic but there are a few technical enhancements that could lead to some real-world performance benefits for real-world golfers. Each iteration of Wilson’s FG Tour V-series irons has featured long irons that were easier to hit than other better player’s irons, but the V6 reaches now ground.

The V4’s featured 18-gram tungsten weights centered on the soles of the 3 through 7 irons. Those weights did what you’d expect. By lowering the center of gravity and increasing launch angle without increasing spin, Wilson made the V4’s long irons remarkably forgiving and easy to get airborne for a player’s cavity back.

TUNGSTEN SOLE WEIGHT Lowers center of gravity to increase launch angle. OPTIMIZED SOLE CAMBER Improves turf interaction and control from all lies. MASS IN IMPACT AREA Maintains a solid, muscle back blade-like feel and provides workability on center and close-to-center impacts.

Well, if 18 grams of tungsten is good, then 20 grams must be better, right?

Wilson added 2 grams worth of tungsten to the sole weights of the V6’s 3- through 7-irons, for a total of 20 grams. The 20-gram inserts in the 6 and 7 irons are still centered in the sole of the V6 irons, but they’re split heel and toe on the 3, 4 and 5 irons, which essentially adds more perimeter weighting to a player’s cavity back, without taking any mass away from the club’s impact zone.

Does it have any affect? Well, forgiveness is a relative term when talking about a player’s cavity back iron. But in this case, it applies. After two rounds and a handful of range sessions comparing the V4 and V6 long irons we found a noticeable difference. The V6 long irons were consistently easy to hit, and while the V4’s were no slouch, there was a noticeable difference between the two. The V6 long irons are, quite simply, stupid-easy to launch long, high and on target.

wilson fg tour irons specs

An Interesting Shaft Choice

The split sole weighting certainly plays a part in making the V6’s long irons easy to hit. But Wilson’s choice of stock shaft finishes the job.

Wilson is using the Dynamic Gold AMT as the stock shaft for the V6 – with AMT standing for Ascending Mass Technology. It’s an effective combo.

In plain English, Ascending Mass Technology means the shafts get progressively heavier, in 3-gram increments, as the the set transitions from long irons to wedges. The long iron shafts are in the 112- to 118-gram range, which – along with the split sole weighting – makes them easier to launch high with more spin and provide a steeper angle of descent to help hold the green. And as the irons get shorter, the shafts get heavier, topping out a Tour-level weight of 130 grams for the pitching and gap wedges to promote more accuracy and consistency.

Ascending weight shafts are nothing new. PING reintroduced its ascending weight shafts this year as an option for the new G irons, while Nippon and Aerotech both offer similar technology. When you combine lighter long iron shafts with long iron heads (which are lighter than short iron heads), you wind up with a club that’s easier to swing and easier to get airborne. Add the split sole weighting of the V6 and you have a long iron with an MOI that can rival those of Game Improvement irons.

wilson fg tour irons specs

Wilson Cleans Up Nicely

If there was a criticism of Wilson’s V4 irons, it’s that some found the cavity design a tad too busy. With the V6’s, Wilson is returning to the cleaner, simpler look of the original FG Tours from 2010.

The black and mustard fill is gone. The cavity is all satin with just a hint of mustard colored striping, which is part of the FG Tour series branding.

This is a player’s iron, so the overall head size is reasonably compact, and there’s plenty of mass directly behind the impact area. Since the original FG Tour, Wilson has done a remarkable job of creating a soft, forged feeling iron out of 8620 carbon steel. You’ll know it when you hit the sweet spot (you’ll be smiling), and you’ll know it when you don’t. Those slight mis-hits will still get you most of the way to your destination, but won’t rattle your metacarpals or phalanges.

wilson fg tour irons specs

And like most player’s irons, the V6’s stick to what would be considered traditional lofts.

Feel-Crossover-Distance

Wilson Staff categorizes its irons into three player profiles. Distance irons are SGI irons (the DEFY hybrid irons and D200 irons), while the Crossover category features Game Improvement irons (the C200’s and forged FG Tour F5’s ).

The Feel category is Wilson’s term for better player’s irons. It includes both the FG Tour V6 and the now three-year old FG Tour 100 blades. There doesn’t appear to be an upgrade on the horizon for the blades, but Wilson is sticking to a 2-year product cycles for the rest of its iron lineup, as well as its woods. You can expect to see an upgrade to the D200 series announced in early 2017.

Wilson’s market share is right around 3%, and Wilson has reported sales growth in each of the past several years. That growth has been small and slow, but it has been steady, and Wilson management will tell you that in the current golf market, slow and steady growth beats the hell out of the alternative.

Can the growth continue? Can it be accelerated? Wilson’s marketing has traditionally been modest and budget conscious, and their Tour strategy is both conservative (they don’t spend huge dollars) and consistent (they stick with their guys). Wilson is investing big dollars in the upcoming Driver Vs. Driver program on the Golf Channel, which does signal intent to move to the next level.

wilson fg tour irons specs

When it comes to product, Wilson still struggles to develop standout metal woods and hybrids – their line is solid, but nothing jumps out and says “BUY ME!” We’ll see what comes from the Driver Vs. Driver program – the winning design will be made available for sale starting the day after Thanksgiving.

Irons and wedges, though, have always been the company’s strength, and the FG Tour V6 should definitely be on the must-demo list for any low to mid-handicapper.

Pricing, Specs, and Availability

The FG Tour V6 will retail for $999.99 for a 4-GW set. Stock grip is the Lamkin Crossline Black, and the stock shaft is the Dynamic Gold AMT.

The V6’s will be available in stores and online starting January 9 th .

Switching from 716ap2.. these are just better. Tried the JPx forged. Liked them, but I don’t want to hit a 7 iron 180… 150 is better, I get that with these babies

Just got V6 Irons with KBS shafts and a Triton Driver with the HZRDUS Red shaft. Amazing stuff.

I got to try the V6’s out today . They were great much better than the V4 . Sweet and butter feel but powerful feeling .The top line is like a blade, thin which I like , not thick looking like many of the present competitors irons .These make you a “PLAYER” without having to be a scratch golfer. . A very good balance feel in shaft to head weight, something the V4 didn’t have . The looks are like a Jaguar, sleek but powerful. This baby can purr, or growl when you step on it . An absolute must if you are looking to be a Top Cat . YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A SCRATCH GOLFER to play these but they may get you closer to scratch golfing with little effort ,aim and fire away that’s all .

Sure, because all you have to do to get close to being a scratch golfer is playing irons with a thin topline that seem blade-like.

Absolutely. Never miss an opportunity to be an ass.

I think I see a future for you in writing novels with Fabio on the cover.

Tom Duckworth

These V6s and jpx900 tours are two of the best looking new irons coming out looking forward to testing.

I mean… Where would I hit them? Demo them? Especially outdoors. They virtually don’t exist out east here in Nova Scotia. Golftown may carry them but they allow sim only which is not going to show me turf interaction. They are almost inexistent… Too bad. Look Purdy

The V4’s are so easy to hit that I ordered a 3 iron to go with my set, and I haven’t carried a 3 iron in at least 15 years. The premium WS irons are as good as any on the market.

Wilsonnnnn!!!!!

Darrel Bentley

Still playing FG TOUR irons,,,,,the 1k price is a little high,,,looking forward to the new driver coming out of the competition that us going to be aired on the Golf channel..,,,would like to demo the new v6 .

I love my V4’s and those look sexy! I will give them a try for sure!!

I bought a set of the V2s after reading the review on his sight but not before I tried them out against other brands. Wilson makes as good a club as any of the other major OEMs. These to me are the best looking of this series so far. I really like how they have evolved.

Clearly the best-looking, agreed. It’s just too bad the aesthetics are so busy and…weird. Even on the V6, it seems more like a matter of people in a boardroom deciding what info they wanted stamped on the thing, and as long as it was all there, hey, it’s good. But yeah, the V6 is distinctly less bad. I just can’t help wishing that such a great-performing series didn’t drive away buyers with the back design.

I recently picked up a forged 6 and 7 from the previous year demo bin and they are frickin legit.

Bana Farrell

You would be surprised. $1, 100 for the Mizunos

Chris Peyton

Sweet looking … Wasn’t expecting it !!!!!!

Rene Jones-Norton

With 2 sets of C200’s one steel one graphite, why not try the new irons. Can they get better than the c200?

Adam Kearns

yeah but there would be a hell of price difference

They are hitting the mark. Either them or Jpx 900 forged.

Scott Fawkes

maybe my gamers for 2017

Kyle Sheppard

Andrew henke.

Yes please!

Kevin Thomas

They do look nice – wasn’t thrilled with the matte finish on the v5’s

Paul Taylor

Hard to beat my V4’s though…

Bad weight distribution, old technology…looks like a dog club.

Why is the weight distribution bad?

Glenn Lickness

After reading a review on the v2, here on mygolf spy! They have been in my bag 4 years now! Wilson has done it right with the new iron line up!

Federico Massariello

Got the m3, best ever

Sitting at the $1K mark is going to be rough. There are SO many great choices out there for that price that Wilson is going to have a tough time convincing people to choose them over say Mizuno or Callaway. This is especially true when resale value probably won’t approach 1/3 that amount. I personally think they’re beautiful and at say $700 I’d be seriously looking.

CLAYTON N FLEMING

I went to be fit for the Apex pro or 716 AP2, hit both then I hit the V4. The V4 is in my bag as will be the V6’s when January rolls around.

Carolina Golfer 2

Great looking iron. Probably above my pay grade, but awesome looking.

Kevin Unterreiner

Love my C200s but will definitely give these a test drive

Don Hollingsworth

Look pretty sweet but it’s JPX900 time lol

Christian Furu

Now with looks that match the performance :) Promising stuff from Wilson.

Matt Dumble

Damn they look sexy!!

Gil Bloomer

I haven’t tried them but I’d love to.

Well I agree that aesthetically at least they are a big improvement over the V4’s. Liking the clean look.

Wilson Staff FG Tour V2 Iron Review

wilson fg tour irons specs

Editor Review-

Pros- A good blend of forgiveness and workability, the V2 Irons are designed for the golfer wanting it all. The 8620 forging gives a player’s feel while the cavity construction provides added forgiveness. The rounded topline, soft leading edge and weight distribution around the cavity encourages the weekend warrior to play like a pro. Stock KBS shaft is just fantastic and conforming grooves.

Cons- While their stock shaft option is the KBS Tour, the standard length is slightly longer than other manufacturers. Traditional forged players will not like that it is 8620 forging. The higher bounce will turn off sweepers and the shiny chrome can be glaring in certain sun light conditions. A slightly larger club head for a player’s iron.

Bottom Line- I have played everything from Super Game Improvement to pure butter blades and these Wilson Irons will beat them all to the bag. The V2 Irons are one step closer for Wilson Staff being back to their glory days and no longer viewed as a K-Mart special.

FG Tour V2’s are forged from 8620 mild carbon steel, but don’t let that fool you into thinking these are cheaply made. These irons scream detail from their precise weight distribution to the extra padding behind the sweet spot to enhance the feel and are accented by KBS Tour shafts and Lamkin Crossline grips.

These irons are three shades of pretty. The sleek silver and black look is a mixture of class and simplicity. While other irons tend to get busier and busier, the V2 irons have that perfect blend of technology without slapping you in the face with gaudy colors. A thin topline, minimal offset and rounded leading edge make the Wilson FG Tour V2 irons a stellar looking iron for the traditionalist. They offer a slightly higher bounce than some other player’s irons creating a larger sole which might turn some players off, but they are great to reduce excess digging.

The stunning look of the blend of silver and black really goes well with any bag colors. With the irons being forged from 8620 mild carbon steel, the cost is lower than other forged clubs. The heads are on the larger side of a player’s club, but would fall in line with the Titleist AP2 or Ping I20 irons.

Performance/playability-

I tested the V2 against my current irons (Callaway X-Forged ’09) and was blown away by the tighter dispersion with the Wilson Irons. A bit about my swing; I am taller and have a step angle of attack (am a digger for those whom use that term), SS was 89 with 6 iron. My launch angle was 2 degrees higher with the Wilson (16.9*) versus the Callaway (15.1*), and the back spin was 5600 versus 5200 in favor of the V2’s again, but what really surprised me was the dispersion. I was constantly tighter with the Wilson Irons and every guy likes it tight (am I allowed to make that joke?).

I only play a 5 iron as my longest iron, but for testing, I hit the 3 and 4 as well. Even the 3 was easy to get air born with control. The irons are pretty traditional loft (47* PW) for a player’s club and are easy to flight. If you like to move the ball up and down or left and right, you should have no problem with these irons. The slightly larger club head also encourages confidence when you set up behind the ball.

Feel is very subjective so just believe that these things are fantastic. If Fabio hit these irons, he would say “I can’t believe they’re not blades” then flap his hair across his chest. A strategically placed hunk of mild carbon 8620 steel right behind the sweet spot doesn’t hurt either. When you hit these things in the center, you have to look down to make sure you actually hit the ball. I really liked the sound as well. While not Muira forging, the V2’s have a muted sound through impact while still giving solid feedback on off center hits as you would expect from a player’s club. Accented with KBS Tour shafts as stock, these irons just belong in your bag.

Overall bottom line-

Some people just really want the game to be much harder than it has to be and if you are that person, stay away from these. However, if you want a player’s iron with GI characteristics that help you take money from your playing partners…give these a try. I played the FG Tour irons for a while and these are definitely a step up. To put it simply:

Wilson Staff? SERIOUSLY!

Q&A: Martin Trainer on his Bobby Grace “Greg Chalmers” putter, 6.5-degree driver, and “butter knife” 2-iron

wilson fg tour irons specs

As unbiasedly as I can put it, Martin Trainer has one of the coolest club setups in professional golf. (At some point soon, I’ll put together a top-10 list of “coolest club setups on Tour,” but I know that Trainer will be in the top-10)

wilson fg tour irons specs

What a lineup. He plays a 6.5-degree Wilson prototype driver, a 13-degree Wilson prototype 3-wood, a true blade Wilson Staff Model 2-iron, and a Bobby Grace “Greg Chalmers Commemorative” putter!

I mean, look at this 2-iron from address…

wilson fg tour irons specs

To quote the great author R.L. Stine: “Goosebumps.”

On Wednesday at the 2024 Texas Children’s Houston Open, I caught up with Trainer to learn more about his bag setup.

Here’s what he had to say:

You have the Internet going crazy over your bag setup, and your putter. Where’d you pick the Bobby Grace-Greg Chalmers putter up? How long have you had it?

MT : This was from when Bobby Grace came to my course in California: Cal Club. And for whatever reason, they just started having them in the shop. So then I took my buddy’s, started using it, and made, like, a million putts in a row, which is how every putter story begins, I guess.

And then, I bought a couple of my own, used it for years, got to the Tour with it, won on Tour with it (the 2019 Puerto Rico Open). Then, about a year later, started using another putter, did that for a couple years, but now it’s back in the bag.

When did it come back in the bag?

MT:  December of this past year. So a few months ago.

What year would you say was the first time you threw that in the bag, or, like, when you bought it?

MT:  God…Probably, 2016, maybe? 2018?

Do you remember how much you paid for it?

MT:  I don’t know, actually. Maybe $100-150 bucks or something. I think that’s the only golf club I’ve bought between high school and now. Well, two, since I bought two of them.

The driver is interesting, too. What went into the prototyping process?

MT:  That was a version of the current driver, but it was the prototype that they first came out with for Tour guys to try. And for whatever reason, I just never switched out to the new one.

It’s just 6.5 degrees, right?

MT:  Yeah. Very low loft, yeah.

What kind of ball speed do you have with that these days?

MT:  Like high 170’s.

Yeah, that’ll work. And then a 2-iron blade? We’re seeing fewer and fewer of those out here.

MT:  Yeah. The butter knife.

Very cool thing to have in the bag. Have you done any testing with driving irons?

MT:  Yeah, I used to have a thicker one, but it was a little offset, and I never hit it that well. And then finally, I started messing around with the butter knife. And I remember the first time I looked down at it, I was terrified. And then I ended up getting used to it, putting it in play, and it’s been in place since. It’s a pretty good club for me.

How far do you carry that?

MT:  Like 235.

A good little wind club, I’m sure.

MTL  Yeah, exactly. I can hit it very low. It’s great.

I love it. You have people shook looking at that. Thanks for the time, man.

MT:  Absolutely.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Tour Details

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

wilson fg tour irons specs

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.
