Hawaii Movie Tour®

With its striking natural beauty, Kauai has long been a destination for Hollywood filmmakers intent on capturing the island’s unspoiled terrain. See famous locations for Pirates of the Caribbean , Jurassic Park , and more!

FUN THINGS TO DO IN KAUAI

Located at 22°05′N 159°30′W, Kauai has a total land area of 562.3 square miles and a population of over 67,000 people.

Kauai is a place that sets the imagination soaring.  Her extraordinary beauty and charm have been immortalized in dozens of Hollywood films and television shows, yet there’s nothing like meeting the real thing. View Kauai through the lens of Hollywood on our  Hawaii Movie Tour .

Perhaps the most striking quality of Kauai is her Eden-like loveliness. The chiseled ridges and valleys of Kauai’s Mt. Waialeale are cloaked, velvet-like, by emerald rainforests. Dramatic cliffs tower thousands of feet above the vast Pacific Ocean. The island’s edges are scalloped with sandy beaches and snorkeling spots frequented by Hawaiian monk seals and sea turtles. Lying hidden from sight are remote valleys, waterfalls, and sea caves, accessible only via air or sea.

There are many ways to feel Kauai’s charm: visit beautiful waterfalls, take a leisurely cruise along Wailua River to the famed Fern Grotto on our  Waimea Canyon and Fern Grotto Tour , and find inspiration at Waimea Canyon – a geological wonder measuring 14 miles long and more than 3,600 feet deep. Cinema fans can follow their favorite actors and see, first-hand, some of Kauai’s iconic sites captured in blockbuster films.

There are small towns to visit, local foods to sample, historic points of interest, and much more worth finding – on Kauai, Hawaii’s Island of Discovery.

Popular places to visit:

10 Best Excursions In Kauai

When you visit Kauai, there is so much to see and do that it’s a great idea to book a tour or excursion to get the most out of your time. You will experience the best things about The Garden Isle thanks to the local knowledge only a trained tour guide can provide.

There are Kauai tours and excursions for every type of adventurer, whether you’d like to sit back and do some sightseeing tours or really get in on the action with snorkeling, surfing, and hiking activities. Once you know what kind of tour you’re after, it’s wise to bring a small backpack with essentials like sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen, and light snacks, and always wear a comfortable pair of shoes that can get wet.

If you’re looking for some of the best excursions in Kauai, look no further than the following list. Adventures of all kinds are one quick reservation away, but be sure to book your excursion in advance, as many of the options fill up fast during the busy seasons.

The Best Excursions in Kauai

Zipline across koloa.

Kauai Zipline Tours

Zip lining is one of the most fun things to do in Kaui so you can’t miss it. You can enjoy a thrilling day of flying through the forests of Koloa and across the Waita Reservoir with this exciting adventure-packed ziplining excursion. Choose from one of eight tracks or hit them all over three hours of fun.

Release your inner superhero with the hands-free “Flyin’ Kauai’an” harness that allows you to fly like a character out of a movie or hang upside down as you glide across forests and valleys. If you’re happy with a more traditional zipline experience, just grab hold of the handles and settle in for an exhilarating ride along the longest ziplines on Kauai .

Be sure to wear a good pair of hiking shoes, as the beginning of all of the courses does include an elevation shift. This gentle climb ensures proper views when you’re ziplining. Between runs, you will take a break with snacks.

The tour requires a good weather day, but if things aren’t ideal on the day you book, you can change the date or get a full refund. Here is our full Koloa Zipline review .

Go On A Snorkeling Cruise On The Na Pali Coast

Na Pali Coast Tours

A visit to Kauai wouldn’t be complete without getting in the water and snorkeling to see some marine life on the Na Pali Coast. The famed area along the northern shore is home to some of the most stunning natural views of Hawaii.

When you book this 5.5-hour catamaran cruise and snorkeling tour, you will experience the best of these sights from places just off the shore.

Throughout the half-day excursion, travelers get several opportunities to snorkel and swim with the chance to see dolphins and sea turtles. The experienced guides take you to these spots and provide tips along your journey while keeping a watchful eye over your party to ensure safety.

Out of the water, relax and enjoy the vistas along the Na Pali Coast, featuring jagged seaside cliffs and verdant hillsides sloping directly into the deep blue waters. The tour starts off right with a snack for breakfast and a prepared meal for lunch before wrapping up. Beer, wine, and Mai’Tais are included for patrons 21 and over, and an assortment of nonalcoholic juices, water, and soda for everyone else.

Take A Helicopter Tour

Kauai Helicopter Tours

One way to gain new perspectives on the island is to see it from above on a helicopter tour. For a truly unparalleled adventure and views of Kauai, consider booking this Eco Adventure Helicopter Ride from Blue Hawaiian, the pioneers of helicopter tours on the island.

Your trip begins in Lihue and takes you to spectacular sights like Mt. Waialeale, the waterfalls of Waiapuna, the vast expanse of Waimea Canyon State Park , the breathtaking Na Pali Coast and 7 other stops.

Over the course of the 50-minute tour, you will have a full view from the large windows of the Eurocopter Eco-Star helicopter. As you sit in the business class seat, the pilot will explain through your headset all the different landscapes you pass by. Questions are welcomed too.

Due to the limited number of seats on each helicopter, this is an activity with limited party sizes. You can also see our full guide for more popular helicopter tours in Kauai .

Kayak and Hike The Wailua River & Secret Falls

Kayak Wailua River

Secret Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls on the island and you can see it all with this excursion. The hiking and kayaking tour begins in Kapa’a on the east coast of Kauai. Over five hours, you will venture up the Wailua River and back. We like how the instructors specifically point out all the natural landmarks along the way.

Once you make your way up the Wailua River for some time, you hike through a beautiful rainforest to see the glorious waterfall known as Secret Falls. It’s a great chance to cool off with a swim before the rest of the trek.

We recommend bringing a comfortable pair of hiking shoes that can get wet and muddy. This tour includes approximately 2 miles of hiking through slippery terrain, and adequate shoes or boots will make your time much easier.

Take along your family and friends or make a few new ones with this tour operated by Duke’s Kayak Adventures. Find more kayaking tours here .

Attend A Luau

Luau Kalamaku

A luau is a one of a kind show you need to experience when you come to Hawaii. Immerse yourself in the vibrant history of Polynesian culture by visting this luau hosted by Luau Kalamaku on the grounds of the historic Kilohana Plantation.

It has everything including a photo session with the cast, live music and hula, an imu ceremony with a traditional whole roast pig, and an open bar. Round-trip transportation to and from your hotel is available upon request.

Throughout the evening, you will learn about the legends of Polynesia as told by stunning performances. The talented performers of Luau Kalamaku bring epic stories to life and make you feel right at home throughout the evening.

The buffet is one of the best things we like about it. It features classical Hawaiian cuisine with teriyaki chicken and Kalua pork. You get a taste of the fusion of Eastern and Western flavors that make Hawaii such a unique culinary destination.

Take A Backroads ATV Tour

Kauai ATV

You will be able to experience the terrain of Kauai the same way as the locals do with this ATV adventure courtesy of Kauai ATVs. Since much of the island is rough terrain, this gives you the chance to see what you might miss otherwise with a car rental . You will see the real Kauai including old plantations, Waita Reservoir, and an active volcano.

There is much historical significance along the trail which you can learn from the guides. Safety is crucial so you’re provided with goggles, helmets, and souvenir neck gaiters that are yours to keep as a souvenir.

Expect some hiking and even the opportunity for some fishing at the Waita Reservoir. I advise you to bring a comfortable pair of all-day shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. The vehicles are open-air which contributes to the overall experience. This tour is a great way to spend about 3 hours exploring the landscapes.

Stroll the Princeville Botanical Gardens With Chocolate

Princeville Botanical Gardens

Who doesn’t love to try new chocolate? Visitors to the island can Indulge in the treat while strolling through the Princeville Botanical Gardens. Over the course of 3 hours, they take you through different landscapes along the area.

Make sure to bring a camera because you will want to capture some photos of the beautifully curated gardens.

In addition to several kinds of gourmet chocolates, they treat you to fresh tropical fruits and freshly harvested honey from the bees in the Princeville Botanical Gardens. Visiting helps support this Kauai institution, which is a place dedicated to the conservation of the bounty of the island.

This makes for a romantic thing to do in Kauai for couples. It’s much more laid back and peaceful compared to the other excursions in case you want to take it easier this day.

Learn To Surf At Hanalei Bay

surfing lessons

If you really want to connect to the spirit of Hawaii, you need to try your hand at surfing at least once. This tour from Hawaiian Surfing Adventures is a great choice for any first-timer surfers who want to give it a shot. Hanalei Bay is one of the best surfing spots for beginners in Kauai due to the calm waters.

After a short lesson on the shore, they take you to the water and get you on a board in no time. The certified surfing instructors will guide you every step of the way and ensure you are able to catch waves during your session. It’s almost 2 hours from start to finish, and the small class size means an almost private instruction experience. It’s one of the most family-friendly excursions in Kauai.

The only requirement for this tour is that you can swim, and if the weather is an issue, you are always able to reschedule. All necessary equipment is provided as part of it, and you just need to worry about wearing appropriate swimwear and bringing along a towel. Don’t forget Hawaii reef-safe sunscreen to protect the ecosystem . We have a separate article in case you want more surfing lesson options .

Go On A Na Pali Coast Sightseeing Boat Tour

Na Pali Coast

Starting on the southern coast of Kauai, you embark on one of the top sightseeing excursions on the west side of the island before making your way to the Na Pali Coast as the sun sets. Get cozy and bask in the stunning views from your spot on the catamaran either inside the cabin or out over the water for 3.5 hours. This is one of the best boat tours in Kauai .

All of the highlights will be on display including the stunning 4,000-foot sheer drops of the sea cliffs, stone spires, pristine beaches , and rainforest valleys. The guides provide plenty of entertainment and information throughout the trip.

Full dinner and drinks are included. I’d recommend bringing medicine along if you’re prone to seasickness since the waters in this part of Kauai are known to be choppy from time to time. The sights are worth some discomfort but it is best to be prepared.

It’s the perfect way to close out your vacation in paradise watching a remarkable sunset over the Na Pali Coast before heading back to shore. If you visit anytime during December and May, you might be able to see some whales in the water since this is humpback whale season.

Go Snorkeling On The Southern Shore

Hawaiian Monk Seal

The shores on the southern coast are a prime location for snorkeling, and this guided tour will take you straight to some hot spots just outside of Koloa. Their certified dive instructors teach you the basics you need to know. You will spend an hour in the water checking out tropical fish, urchins of all shapes and colors, and the coral reef.

Unlike the other boat snorkeling tours, this one embarks directly from a soft shore, allowing complete beginners to join in on the fun. We advise that you’re comfortable in the water and a decent swimmer, although the ocean conditions on this part of the island tend to be favorable for anyone based on our experience.

Sea turtles and monk seals are popular near this area, so you might spot one depending on the season and your luck. Since it’s all based on weather conditions, try to book it on a day with good weather. Snacks and water as well as snorkeling equipment are provided by them.

Snorkel The Na Pali Coast

Na Pali Coast Snorkeling

Visitors can hop on board this 37’ Naiad raft and prepare for a snorkeling adventure like no other. They provide you with snorkeling gear and let you dive into the water to see dolphins, sea turtles, and underwater reefs and coral formations along the rocky shores.

Between snorkeling stops, you will be able to sit on the deck and eat complimentary snacks and beverages. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the many sea caves and waterfalls along the shore, but the helpful staff will sometimes point them out too.

This tour is available year-round, but during the winter it may be postponed or modified due to the high swells that occur. While it’s still a great tour, we recommend booking it during the spring or summer for a better chance of seeing everything. You can also catch glimpses of whales and dolphins at certain opportunities.

20 Best Things to Do in Kauai, Hawaii

The Garden Island offers an endless number of fun things to do, whether you're looking to hike, kayak, swim or relax on the beach. By and far the most popular attraction on the island is the one-of-a-kind Napali Coast , which can be seen on foot

  • All Things To Do

hawaii excursions kauai

Napali Coast Napali Coast

U.S. News Insider Tip: For a low-effort wow moment, drive past Waimea Canyon in Koke'e State Park and stop at the Kalalau Lookout for a glimpse of the glorious Napali Coast and Kalalau Valley some 4,000 feet below. – Jill Schildhouse

The Napali Coast is a 17-mile expanse of rocky, steep and oh-so-gorgeous cliffs that stretch along Kaua'i's North Shore. Travelers agree there's no better way to experience Kaua'i's natural beauty and eye-catching terrain than at Napali, so you should make plans to marvel at it – either on foot, from the water or from the air (there are no roads that go along the Napali Coast).

Waimea Canyon and Koke'e State Park Waimea Canyon and Koke'e State Park

U.S. News Insider Tip: Arrive early to get a parking spot, or between 11 a.m. and noon (after the early birds have finished their hikes). Then, refuel at the delicious nearby taco spot, Island Taco. – Erin Evans, Managing Editor

Waimea Canyon, aptly nicknamed the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," should be at the top of every traveler's itinerary. This massive gorge – which measures 14 miles across, a mile wide and 3,600 feet deep – is awash with spectacular scenery difficult to find elsewhere on the Hawaiian Islands. Here, you'll see craggy red cliffsides and crested buttes blanketed in lush, evergreen vegetation as far as the eye can see, with waterfalls dotted in between. Many travelers who visit Waimea Canyon choose to take in the sight by car, as there are multiple lookout points situated along Koke'e Road, including the popular Waimea Canyon and Puu Hinahina lookout points.

Po'ipu Beach Park Po'ipu Beach Park free

U.S. News Insider Tip: It's common to see Hawaiian monk seals sleeping and sunning themselves in the sand; do not be alarmed, they are perfectly OK. Be sure to stay 100 feet away from these endangered creatures (you can still get some great photos). – Jill Schildhouse

Po'ipu Beach Park is popular with both residents of and visitors to Kaua'i. This small shoreline situated on the south side appeals to many types of beachgoers thanks to its golden sands, calm waters and convenient location in the heart of the Po'ipu resort area. Here, sun seekers can easily kick back, relax and lay out for hours in between the palm trees while those with children needn't worry about big waves interrupting a family swim. Those looking for a little more adventure can enjoy bodyboarding (the beach features small waves) and snorkeling.

Princeville Botanical Gardens Princeville Botanical Gardens

Princeville Botanical Gardens began as a passion project of Bill and Lucinda Robertson, who have been cultivating former cattle land and reintroducing native flora since 2004. In 2010, they opened their gardens to the public for small private tours. This attraction on the island's North Shore contains hundreds of plants including a diverse array of rare and endangered flowers, fruit trees and plants with medicinal properties. It has both native plants and flora from around the world. The gardens also produce honey from its on-site beehives as well as organic chocolate.

The variety of plants consistently impresses visitors, who typically call the gardens very beautiful and the tour educational and entertaining. Guides win high marks for their professionalism and insight. And the food samples offered along the way are heartily appreciated.

hawaii excursions kauai

Hike the Kalalau Trail Hike the Kalalau Trail

Many people come to Kaua'i with high hopes of backpacking the 22-mile round-trip Kalalau Trail. This trail is so popular because it is the only land-based option to explore the world-famous Napali Coast . No roads or paved streets go along, in or through this famous coastline.

The hike takes travelers through five valleys in Napali Coast State Wilderness Park, passing through lush tropical forests, bubbling streams, cascading waterfalls and dramatic cliffside ocean views. What's more, the hike ends at the remote Kalalau Beach. But access to this unworldly scenery comes with a price. Novice hikers, expert expeditioners, the Hawaii Tourism Authority and state officials all say the same: This hike is a lot of work and shouldn't be attempted without the proper equipment and, most importantly, experience. The trail is filled with elevation and terrain changes throughout. Trails are not wide and open, but rather narrow, rocky and very muddy. And once you hit Crawler's Ledge around mile 7, the dirt path starts to disappear and the rock climbing – or rather clinging – begins.

Wailua River State Park Wailua River State Park free

U.S. News Insider Tip: If you're lucky enough to visit Wailua Falls when locals are selling homemade banana bread out of the back of their trucks, be sure to have cash on hand to buy a loaf – it's the most delicious bread you've ever tasted. – Jill Schildhouse

If you want to experience Kaua'i's majestic rainforests without breaking too much of a sweat, then you'll want to add Wailua River State Park to your itinerary. This park on the eastern coast of the island is home to the only navigable river in Hawaii, allowing visitors to get an eyeful of the lush valley on a boat tour .

hawaii excursions kauai

Hanalei Bay Hanalei Bay free

U.S. News Insider Tip: Snapping a photo on Hanalei Pier is sure to yield a gorgeous shot, but standing under the pier when the tide is low makes for a really cool architectural image with an unexpected vantage point. – Jill Schildhouse

Hanalei Bay is located 4 miles southwest of Princeville, one of the island's premier resort areas, on Kaua'i's North Shore. Hanalei Bay is composed of three different beaches: Wai'oli Beach Park, Hanalei Beach Park and Black Pot Beach, the latter of which is sandwiched between the historic Hanalei Pier and the mouth of the Hanalei River. Lifeguards can be found at multiple points along the beach and bathroom facilities are also on-site. Keep in mind that there will be signs along the beach indicating water conditions and if it is safe to swim. If you're ever unsure, talk with a lifeguard.

hawaii excursions kauai

Snorkel at Tunnels Beach Snorkel at Tunnels Beach free

If you're looking for a place to snorkel in Kaua'i, head to Tunnels Beach (aka Makua Beach). Tunnels Beach is located on Ha'ena Point on Kaua'i's North Shore near Wainiha, about 2 miles east of the Kalalau Trail and 9 miles west of Princeville.

The beach offers an expansive reef that is suitable for both novice and experienced snorkelers. Its name refers to the lava tubes, or tunnels, that run through the reef. Travelers can expect to see batches of coral, small sea caves and tunnels as well as wildlife, which could include turtles, plenty of tropical fish, eels, crabs and more. If you're not up for snorkeling, visitors say this beach is still worth a trip for its fantastic location. Here, the water is clear, palm trees abound and if you look toward the west, you can admire the cluster of lush, jagged peaks that flank the beach.

U.S. News Insider Tip: Even when it's raining elsewhere on the island, the beaches around the Poipu area are often sunny and dry. If soggy weather ruins your plans on the north, west or east sides of Kaua'i, head south for near-perfect conditions. – Jill Schildhouse

The moment you drive through the iconic mile-long tunnel of eucalyptus trees on Maluhia Road, you know you've arrived on the beautiful South Shore of Kaua'i. There's plenty to see and do here — this is where you'll find Poipu Beach Park and Old Koloa Town , which could easily take up a full day for anyone who wants some quality beach time, followed by a meal and shopping.

hawaii excursions kauai

Kalapaki Beach Kalapaki Beach free

Despite its close proximity to the airport, cruise port and multiple hotels, travelers maintain Kalapaki Beach is a relaxing spot. The beach is located on the west side of the island in Lihue, an area known for gentle swimming conditions and easy access to amenities. Kalapaki is an especially swimmer-friendly shoreline because of the nearby Nawiliwili Bay, which features a jetty and breakwater that slow big waves. As such, this won't be the most exciting surf spot, but rather the perfect place for a relaxing dip or an afternoon of paddleboarding. And thanks to its location right in back of the popular Marriott's Kaua'i Beach Club , travelers are steps away from eateries, shops on Rice Street and water sport rentals.

While recent visitors do agree that Kalapaki is perfect for a soothing afternoon under the sun, some said that when cruise ships are in port, the beach does experience more visitors. And although this beach is backed by a Marriott property, it does not have lifeguards, so be mindful of conditions and don't swim at night. There are no set hours for Kalapaki Beach and it is free to visit, even if you aren't a Marriott guest. For more information on Kalapaki Beach, visit the Hawaii Tourist Authority's website .

Ke'e Beach Ke'e Beach

Ke'e Beach (pronounced Keh-AY), which is located within Ha'ena State Park, is conveniently situated at the Kalalau trailhead, offering beachgoers sweeping views of the Napali cliffs from the comfort of the sand. Plus, there are lifeguards posted here and, depending on the time of year, it is safe to swim and snorkel, so long as you keep close to the shore. The beach also offers restrooms and showers, though due to its close proximity to the cliffs, there is no cell phone service.

Because of its stunning location on the island's North Shore, recent visitors couldn't help but fall in love with Ke'e Beach. Located at the start of the Kalalau Trail, this beach has been known to see considerable traffic. In response, the park has imposed daily visitor limits and requires advance reservations for entry.

Ha'ena Beach Park Ha'ena Beach Park free

When the conditions are calm during the summer, the North Shore's Ha'ena Beach Park is a popular spot for swimming and snorkeling – let the turquoise waters lure you right in. This beach is located on one side of the crescent-shaped Maniniholo Bay, and the other side is the popular Tunnels Beach . Those who prefer to lounge on the white sand beach will find myriad shells to examine and enjoy (remember to leave them where you found them instead of collecting them to take home, which can negatively impact the delicate ecosystem). However, take caution during the winter months; you will no doubt see experienced surfers riding the gigantic waves, but the surf and currents here can be quite dangerous for swimmers. Recent visitors note that the entire beach is taped off and the lifeguard station is closed when the waves are too intense, so be sure to mind those warnings.

You can access Ha'ena Beach Park off of Highway 560 at mile marker 9. Not to be confused with Ha'ena State Park (home of Ke'e Beach and the trailhead for the Kalalau Trail ), Ha'ena Beach Park does not require advance parking reservations or an entry fee. However, recent visitors cautioned that parking is limited and that you'll need to arrive before 10 a.m. to score a spot.

The garden also has vine-covered cliffs overlooking the ocean and a stream lined with fig trees. You may recognize parts of the garden from their appearances in movies like "Jurassic Park."

The lush garden doesn't fail to impress plant lovers. Visitors frequently laud the tour guides for their extensive knowledge about the garden's collection. Reviewers suggest wearing mosquito repellent and closed-toe shoes as parts of the garden can get quite muddy.

East of Princeville on Kaua'i's North Shore, Anini Beach features miles of white sand and a large coral reef. Due to its consistently calm waters, the beach is widely regarded by visitors as a great place to visit with children, despite the absence of lifeguards. (You may run into strong currents beyond the reef.) Because of these conditions, the beach is a destination for fans of water activities like paddleboarding and windsurfing. Its tranquil lagoon also makes it an ideal spot for novice snorkelers.

Beachgoers regularly describe Anini Beach as a wonderful place for swimming, snorkeling or just relaxing. Many recommend it for those traveling with children.

Old Koloa Town Old Koloa Town free

Located on Kaua'i's South Shore, near Poipu Beach , the picturesque Old Koloa Town is the original sugar plantation-era shopping village in the town of Koloa. This home of Hawaii's first successful sugar mill was established in 1835, and each of the brightly colored buildings has a history worth noting. For instance, The Tao Building was first used as an ice cream parlor, serving the plantation workers. The Chang Fook Building was built in the 1920s and operated as a general store before becoming known for its baked goods. And the Koloa Hotel was used as lodging for the traveling salesmen who worked for large mercantile agencies on O'ahu .

Today, these buildings are filled with a wide variety of charming shops and restaurants. A stroll through this complex introduces visitors to storefronts filled with surf attire and beachwear, souvenir T-shirts and gifts, handcrafted goods and fine art galleries. Grab a shave ice at The Fresh Shave for a quick cooldown or a bite to eat at Kenji Burger, Koloa Pizza Kitchen + Bar or Leahi Vegan Eats.

Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge and the Kilauea Lighthouse Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge and the Kilauea Lighthouse

The 203-acre Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge sits atop a 180-foot ocean bluff on the island's North Shore. In addition to ocean views, you may spot seabirds rarely seen from land, such as the Hawaiian state bird (the nene, or Hawaiian goose) as well as Laysan albatross (moli) and the red-footed booby. From December to May, you might also be able to see humpback whales cavorting in the water nearby. One of Kaua'i's top attractions, the 52-foot Daniel K. Inouye Kilauea Point Lighthouse, sits within the refuge.

Visitors consistently say this area offers unrivaled scenic views. Some recommend bringing binoculars to make the most of the ample bird-watching opportunities (though you can also use binoculars provided by the refuge). In addition to the helpful park rangers, reviewers also praised the signage posted throughout the refuge, which identifies the various bird species that can be found here. Many also encourage a stop at the gift shop.

Hanapepe Hanapepe

Welcome to the art capital of Kaua'i, Hanapepe Town. Located on the southwest side of the island between Koloa and Waimea, this area has a rich history. Dubbed "Kaua'i's Biggest Little Town," it once brimmed with enlisted servicemen and sailors stationed here from World War I to the early 1950s. The historic buildings, which served as inspiration for the Disney film "Lilo and Stitch," house shops, eateries and more art galleries than anywhere else on the island.

There are a wide variety of artisans in Hanapepe, with designs and mediums to suit any taste or style. For instance, Kalakoa Kaua'i Fine Art Gallery features local artists who have mastered light, color and motion. Banana Patch Studio showcases hand-painted ceramic tiles and pottery. And Pu'uwai Gallery & Boutique sells locally crafted jewelry, art and clothing. Beyond the shops, the area also serves up a bevy of local eateries, including favorites like Midnight Bear Breads bakery, Longies Shave Ice and Treats and Kauai Kookie, which was founded in 1965.

Arrive early to peruse the more than 100-acre plantation and explore the open-air artisan market for handcrafted souvenirs held exclusively for guests. Be sure to listen for the blowing of the conch shell at 6:15 p.m., which signals the beginning of the ceremony.

At 6:30 p.m., attendees will dine on a buffet of dishes made from fresh local ingredients, including seasonal fruit, green salad, poi (taro root), teriyaki chicken, vegetable chow mein, sautéed vegetables, seasonal fish and the famous Kalua pork – this whole roasted pig is cooked in an underground oven called an imu , and wrapped in banana leaves. Leave room for the banana cream tart, pineapple upside down cake and coconut pudding for dessert.

Fern Grotto Fern Grotto

As its name suggests, Kaua'i's Fern Grotto is a natural lava rock grotto covered in hanging ferns and tropical foliage. This special place was once the birthplace of the island's ali'i , or royalty, but it's now a popular locale for wedding ceremonies. The only way to get to this magical location, which sits on the south fork of the Wailua River on the eastern side of the island, is by boat.

The Smith's Kaua'i Fern Grotto tour begins with a leisurely, 2-mile open-air cruise along the river, during which you'll hear songs and stories of ancient Hawaii and be treated to a hula lesson with beautiful scenery. Upon arrival, you'll take a short nature walk through the rainforest full of native Hawaiian plants and around a serene space where the guides share history and culture all the way to the Fern Grotto. There's a waterfall along the way, providing a cooling mist. The acoustics here are so incredible that local musicians and entertainers are known to greet visitors with Hawaiian music.

Best Excursions on Kauai: Unlock Tropical Adventures of a Lifetime

Exploring Kauai, you’ll quickly discover why it’s dubbed the “Garden Isle.” From cascading waterfalls to dramatic cliffs, the island’s natural beauty is unmatched. But with so much to see, where do you start?

Hot Spots Hawaii Featured Image

Lucky for you, Kauai’s excursions are as varied as its landscapes. Whether you’re up for a thrilling helicopter ride or a serene kayak trip down the Wailua River, there’s an adventure waiting for you.

Best Excursions on Kauai

When you’re on Kauai, the adventure options you have are as vast as the island’s natural beauty. Here’s a curated list of some top excursions you definitely shouldn’t miss.

Helicopter Tours

First up, helicopter tours are an absolute must. You’ll soar over the Na Pali Coast’s untouched landscapes and the awe-inspiring Waimea Canyon. Imagine witnessing the Manawaiopuna Falls, featured in Jurassic Park, from a bird’s eye view! This perspective offers you a privileged glimpse into Kauai’s hidden gems, ones that are inaccessible by foot.

Kayaking the Wailua River

Kayaking down the tranquil Wailua River is an experience that blends relaxation with a touch of exploration. Paddle through tropical forests and venture into the heart of the island. Along the way, you might stop at the Secret Falls or the Fern Grotto, where you can enjoy a short hike or just bask in the serene surroundings.

Zipline Adventures

For the thrill-seekers, Kauai’s zipline adventures are your chance to zip across lush valleys and above treetops. Feel the adrenaline rush as you whiz past breathtaking scenery that’s bursting with greenery and life.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

Kauai’s underwater world is teeming with vibrant marine life. Choose from snorkeling or scuba diving to witness the colorful coral reefs and the schools of tropical fish. Places like Tunnels Beach and Poipu Beach Park are renowned for their clear waters and the chance to spot sea turtles.

Get a bit dirty with an ATV tour through Kauai’s backcountry. This excursion leads you through old sugar plantations and to views of the island’s rugged terrain which are simply stunning no matter what the weather’s doing.

Remember, when you’re choosing your excursions, consider what you love doing and the kind of experiences you want to have. Whether it’s soaring, paddling, diving, or driving, Kauai has the adventure that’s just right for you.

Helicopter Rides over the Napali Coast

Imagine soaring high above the lush valleys and towering sea cliffs of Kauai’s iconic Napali Coast. Your helicopter’s blades whir in a rhythm that syncs with the pulse of the ancient landscapes below. With every turn, a new panoramic vista unfolds, revealing hidden beaches, mystical waterfalls, and the sheer majesty that is Kauai.

As you gaze out from the helicopter, you’ll understand why this experience is unmatched. The Napali Coast is inaccessible by car, making the aerial view not only exclusive but utterly breathtaking. It’s the kind of scene that stays etched in your memory forever.

Booking a helicopter tour offers you a unique perspective of the Garden Isle. These guided flights typically last between 60 to 90 minutes and come with a wealth of knowledge from pilots who are often locals themselves. They regale you with stories and facts about the island’s history and geology, adding layers to the visual spectacle.

The Best Time for a Helicopter Tour

To make the most out of your aerial adventure, you need to time it just right. The optimal period for a helicopter ride is during the morning when the weather is clearer and the light casts a magical glow over the landscapes. Moreover, the calm air conditions contribute to a smoother flight.

Here are a few tips for your helicopter tour:

  • Wear dark clothing to reduce glare on the windows for better photos.
  • Ensure your camera is fully charged; you won’t want to miss a shot.
  • Listen closely to the safety briefing; it’s essential for ensuring a safe trip.

Don’t worry if you’re unable to snag a morning flight. The Napali Coast’s beauty is timeless, and whether you witness it in the golden morning light or the rich hues of the afternoon, it promises to be an unforgettable excursion.

Discover the Wailua River by Kayak

Embarking on a gentle paddle along the serene Wailua River invites you to connect with Kauai’s lush landscape in the most enchanting way. As you guide your kayak through the calm, emerald waters, you’re following in the paddle strokes of ancient Hawaiian royalty—this area was once reserved for the ali’i, or chiefs.

Venture through a Rainforest Your journey begins amidst the towering canopy of a tropical rainforest. Surrounded by the sweet calls of native birds and the rustling of hidden creatures among the foliage, each stroke brings you deeper into the heart of Kauai’s natural splendor.

Secrets of the Fern Grotto A must-see destination along the river is the mystical Fern Grotto. This natural lava-rock grotto, draped in delicate ferns, is accessible only by water. The acoustics inside create a unique opportunity for you to hear traditional Hawaiian chants echo in a way that seems to transport you back in time.

Wailua River’s Waterfalls Watching a waterfall cascade into the river provides a moment of awe. Opportunities for a refreshing swim near the cascading water exist but ask your guide about the best spots; they change with the seasons and weather conditions.

Before setting out, wear comfortable, quick-drying clothes and secure water shoes. Sunscreen and bug repellent will be your best friends on this adventure. Remember to pack a waterproof camera because you’ll want to capture the towering Mount Waialeale, one of the wettest spots on earth, as well as the rare plant and animal species you may encounter.

Kayaking the Wailua River doesn’t require experience—guides are on hand to lead the way and share the stories and secrets of the area. Whether you choose a guided tour or decide to adventure independently, respect the river’s cultural significance by leaving no trace of your visit. Every paddle stroke offers a new discovery, and the rhythmic sound of water against your kayak will stay with you long after your journey ends.

Explore the Stunning Waimea Canyon

As you venture further into Kauai’s unparalleled landscapes, Waimea Canyon must not be missed. Often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” this geological wonder stretches approximately 14 miles long and a mile wide, with depths of up to 3600 feet. The dramatic crevices and vibrant palette of earth tones paint a picture of natural history that’s both breathtaking and humbling.

Take the opportunity to experience Waimea Canyon through various lookouts, each offering unique vistas. The main lookout provides panoramic views that showcase the vastness and depth of the canyon. For a quieter experience, drive up to the Puu Hinahina Lookout. Here, you’ll capture the contrast of the red soil against the lush greenery—an artist’s dream.

  • What to Bring :
  • Binoculars for bird watching
  • Comfortable shoes for short hikes

Heading on a hike through this rugged terrain can be an exhilarating challenge. Trails range from the manageable Kukui Trail to the more demanding Canyon Trail which leads to the remarkable Waipo’o Falls. Along the way, you’ll likely see native plants and perhaps even the endangered Kauai O’o bird if you’re lucky.

For a more relaxed journey, consider a guided tour that combines informative narratives with the comfort of a drive. Not only do you learn about the geological forces that shaped this masterpiece but also the cultural significance behind the ancient land.

The beauty of Waimea Canyon is its ability to unite visitors with nature, offering a serene yet exciting adventure. Its ever-changing weather patterns cast dancing shadows and varying hues across the landscape, making every visit uniquely its own. Remember to charge your camera; you’ll want to capture every moment of your journey among these awe-inspiring cliffs and valleys.

Snorkeling Adventures in Hanalei Bay

Dipping beneath the surface of Hanalei Bay, you’re immediately transported to an underwater realm that teems with aquatic life unique to this part of Kauai. Your snorkeling adventure begins with the sight of vibrant coral reefs that anchor a world brimming with colorful fish and mesmerizing marine animals.

As you glide through the clear waters, you might find yourself swimming alongside Hawaiian green sea turtles, locally known as “Honu,” which are revered in Hawaiian culture and often make for an unforgettable encounter. Keep your eyes peeled for the humuhumunukunukuapua’a , Hawaii’s state fish, with its distinctive pattern and darting movements.

Whether you’re a seasoned snorkeler or trying it for the first time, Hanalei Bay offers conditions that are ideal with its typically calm and shallow waters. Venture to the coral reefs where the bay’s true magic lies, but remember to maintain a respectful distance from all marine life – preserving the natural beauty of Kauai is something that you’re a part of.

Here are a few tips to enhance your snorkeling trip:

  • Opt for a guided tour to discover the best spots that only locals know about.
  • Ensure your gear fits properly to avoid any discomfort while exploring.
  • Slather on reef-safe sunscreen to protect yourself and the marine ecosystem.
  • Pay attention to ocean conditions and heed any warnings from lifeguards.

Above all, remember to savor every moment spent in this aquatic haven. With each stroke, you’ll uncover more of Hanalei Bay’s secrets, adding yet another chapter to your Kauai adventure story. From the hidden nooks beneath the waves to the inviting tropical fish that greet you, snorkeling in Hanalei Bay isn’t just an activity, it’s a journey through one of nature’s most spectacular galleries.

You’re now armed with some of the most exhilarating excursions Kauai has to offer. Whether soaring above the Napali Coast, paddling down the tranquil Wailua River, marveling at the grandeur of Waimea Canyon, or snorkeling through the underwater wonderland of Hanalei Bay, there’s an adventure tailored just for you. Remember to capture these moments and immerse yourself fully in the experiences. Kauai’s beauty is unmatched, and each excursion promises a treasure trove of memories that you’ll cherish long after your footprints have faded from its sandy shores. Dive in, explore, and let the island’s spirit move you.

The island of Kauai in Hawaii is best known for the Napali Coast , movies like Jurassic Park , and tropical landscapes. But jungles need rain so let us show you the best things to do on Kauai with advice on the best time to visit.

Kauai is so much more than beaches. Let two people who lived on Maui and Oahu , and travel to Kauai frequently, show you the best things to do on Kauai, The Garden Isle.

Most things to do on Kauai lists take you randomly around the island. Here, I’ll show you the best things to do starting in the north and then taking you around the island. With maps, directions, and why we love the activity, you can start planning your trip to Kauai easily.

Our Kauai Travel Guide has more to help you plan your trip to Kauai. If you’re traveling with kids, you have to check out the 7 best Kauai resorts for families . Kauai waters can be rough, so we found the 9 best beaches for swimming The most popular activity is cruising the Napali coast and we’ve found the best Napali Coast boat tours for you! We’ll even help you with what to pack for your trip so you don’t have to worry about a thing!

Where to Find the Things to Do on Kauai

In my opinion, Kauai is the easiest island to navigate among the eight main Hawaiian Islands for two reasons.

First, the island closely resembles a circle. Areas of the island are referred to by the compass points. See the map of areas on Kauai below.

things to do on kauai map

Second, Kauai has a mountainous interior so the roads follow the coast. Kuhio Highway (Route 56) starts on the North Shore and ends in Lihue. Then, Kaumuali’i Highway (Route 50) will take you south and to the furthest western point. There are no roads along the Napali Coast, hence the coast is famous for sunset and dinner cruises and snorkel trips .

This list of things to do on Kauai is organized by area of the island to help you with your planning. In our Kauai Wayfinder Itinerary , we structure our excursion days around the popular areas of the island as that is the best way to organize your Kauai vacation days.

If you’re going to be visiting Kauai via a cruise, check out our favorite Kauai shore excursions , and grab a Cruising Hawaii Guide to shortcut the planning process.

Things to Do on Kauai: North Shore

Kauai is nicknamed The Garden Isle and the North Shore is a big reason why. With lush jungles, stunning cliffs (pali in Hawaiian), and beautiful beaches this is a popular place to stay and for activities. But the weather can get dicey.

The North Shore of Kauai is on the windward side of the island, meaning it receives more rain and higher surf during the winter months. You can still do many of the activities below from October to March, but plan to experience rain and check ocean conditions before you head out.

Per our research, the best time to visit Kauai is May, August, September, and October. If you do happen to get caught in the rain, we have a great resource on what to do when it rains , and our Hawaii Packing List will have you prepared for any weather!

Explore the Google Map below for all our favorite things to do on Kauai’s North Shore.

1. Napali Coast Wilderness Area

When you see pictures of Kauai, they’re usually showing the Napali Coast. Napali Coast State Wilderness Park covers the northwest coast of Kauai and is relatively untouched natural beauty. The cathedral cliffs along the ocean are remote, rugged, and romantic for honeymooners to hikers.

The coast is full of sea caves, waterfalls, and ancient Hawaiian villages. While most people explore this area via boat (see our favorite NaPali Coast boat tours here ), you can hike into the wilderness area with a permit .

Directions: Napali Coast State Wilderness Park

things to do kauai kalalau beach

I was fortunate to hike the Kalalau Trail (11 miles), swim to the Honopu Arch, and sleep on Kalalau Beach with friends years ago. It was one of my most memorable Kauai vacations. But exhausting.

things to do kauai kalalau trail

You can also choose to visit Ha’ena State Park to walk part of the Kalalau Trail, see our next thing to do on Kauai for details.

2. The Best Beach on Kauai

Kauai has many pristine beaches, but Ke’e Beach is our favorite beach on Kauai . Located at the end of the Kuhio Highway, Ha’ena State Park is home to working lo’i kalo (taro patches), heiau (temple), trailheads for the Kalalau Trail and Hanakapi’ai Beach and waterfall, and the popular Ke’e Beach.

things to do in kauai haena state park

Ke’e Beach is a small bay tucked under towering cliffs. With a lifeguard on duty, showers, and restrooms, the beach is great for kids . The reef makes for a natural lagoon for snorkeling and swimming. But during the winter the high surf makes this beach a no-go. See our 7 Best Beaches on Kauai in the Winter for safer spots to visit.

Due to the popularity of Ke’e Beach, entry and parking reservations are required for access to the state park. Shuttle reservations are available.

things to do kauai best beach kee beach

You can hike a portion of the Kalalau Trail with your Ha’ena State Park entry fee. Hiking from Ke’e Beach to Hanakapi’ai Beach is 2 miles. You will be rewarded with amazing views of the coast and a sandy beach during the summer (not a good swimming beach due to strong currents). The waterfall hike is 8 miles roundtrip.

Directions: Ha’ena State Park 6CC9+8R Wainiha, Hawaii, Kapaʻa, HI 96746

3. Kauai’s Best Botanical Garden

Limahuli Garden & Preserve is an ecological preserve built to protect the diverse plant and animal life in the valley. Settled for the last 1,500 centuries, the valley is home to native forests, endangered animals, and archaeological complexes. Visiting Limahuli is part of having an authentic Hawaii experience .

We love this place for its tranquility and for seeing the workings of the ancient lo’i kalo (taro patches). Take a self-guided tour of the grounds (about 1.5 hours), appreciate the history, and enjoy a day in this jungle paradise. Learn more about Limahuli Gardens here .

Directions: Limahuli Garden & Preserve 5-8291 Kuhio Hwy, Hanalei, HI 96714

4. Ha’ena Beach

Ha’ena Beach, despite the name, is not part of Ha’ena State Park so no reservation is required. The beach park is located immediately off the Kuhio Highway. The long sandy beach is known for swimming (during calm conditions) and beach walks under the pali (cliffs).

There is a lifeguard on duty, showers, a snack shack (trailer) with fresh fruit, and restrooms.

Directions: Haena Beach Park HI-560, Kapaʻa, HI 96746

As this is a popular North Shore beach, the small parking lot fills up fast and spills over onto the road. Come early for parking. Many people park here to walk down the beach to the popular snorkel spot of Tunnels (Makua Beach).

See our 5 Best Snorkel Spots on Kauai for information on snorkeling Tunnels beach.

5. Maniniholo Dry Cave

Across the street from Ha’ena Beach, come explore the Maniniholo Dry Cave. The low-ceiling cave is an expansive room with a sand floor.

Directions: 5-7878 Kuhio Hwy, Kilauea, HI 96754

The cave was formed, per the legend, that Polynesian settlers were chasing the Menehune from Waimea Canyon. The Menehune escaped into a tunnel that connected to the North Shore. Upon making their escape through the tunnel, they collapsed the ceiling making the dry cave.

If you’re heading to Kauai, be sure to check out our ultimate Kauai Travel Guide . From where to stay to what to do, this guide will help you plan your perfect Kauai vacation.

6. Hanalei Bay

Hanalei Bay has nearly two miles of beach and in the summer the water is as calm as can be.

To swim at Hanalei Beach, we prefer to park on the east side of Hanalei Bay, near the Hanalei Pier and Black Pot Beach. From here you can get a great view of the bay and play on the pier. Directions below are to the public parking lot.

Directions: Hanalei Bay near Black Pot Beach

Beware in the winter, waves here get rough. There may be some days that the beach is closed and swimming here (especially with kids) is really only ideal in the summer.

Hanalei Bay made our 7 Best Kid-Friendly Beaches on Kauai and 9 Best Beaches on Kauai for Swimming .

7. Hanalei Town

The town of Hanalei is built along Hanalei Bay, so you’ll have all the amenities you need at your fingertips: food, shave ice, and SUP rentals.

Hanalei Town is a great place to shop, have breakfast or lunch, and explore the town. Some of our favorite places to grab a bite are the following:

  • Hanalei Poke
  • Hanalei Food Truck Park with Holey Grail Donuts and Fresh Bite Kauai
  • Hanalei Bread Company

8. Hanalei Bridge

Originally built in 1912, the through-truss bridge is a replica of the original but still has all the charm. Spanning 113 feet across the Hanalei River, you will cross the one-lane bridge when entering and leaving Hanalei Town.

hanalei bridge is a kauai thing to do

Due to the popularity of Hanalei Town, delays on the one-lane bridge are becoming more common. We will see if they install a traffic light (it would be the first in Hanalei) to help ease the congestion.

9. Hanalei Lookout

A quick stop when passing through Princeville on the way to Hanalei is Hanalei Valley Lookout. Pull over across the street from the Foodland grocery store to take in the grandeur of Kauai.

The lookout is a panoramic view of the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge and Kawaikini mountain range. The taro field patchwork with the mountains in the background is my favorite view on Kauai.

Directions: Hanalei Valley Lookout Kuhio Hwy, Princeville, HI 96722

10. Anini Beach

Another North Shore Beach that made our 7 Best Kid-Friendly Kauai Beaches is Anini Beach.

When you first drive to Anini beach in Kilauea, you might not be sure you’re heading to the correct spot. But when you finally arrive, you realize that this beach is beautiful.

anini beach beaches kauai things to do

White sand beach with calm, shallow water, this beach is great for kids in the summer. There’s even a big grassy beach park area, so if your little one gets tired of the sand, they can head to the grass to play.

Directions: Anini Beach Kalihiwai, HI 96754

One note: bring your own food and beverages. Unlike some of the other beaches that have food trucks or restaurants nearby, Anini beach is a bit secluded. See our video below for more details on Anini Beach.

11. Kilauea Point Lighthouse

Located past the village of Kilauea is the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. Many come for the short walk to the historic Kilauea Point Lighthouse built in 1913. As you are perched on 180-foot high cliffs, the views of the coast are wonderful but this place is really about the wildlife.

Watch red-footed boobies. The birds soar along the cliffs for a stunning experience. Hopefully get to see Hawaii’s state bird, the nene. Reservations are required to enter the refuge.

Directions: 3580 Kilauea Rd, Kilauea, HI 96754

Kilauea Point Lighthouse things to do kauai

If you know you’ll be spending a lot of time on the North Shore, we have even more to do in and around Hanalei .

Things to Do on Kauai: East Side

Nicknamed the Royal Coconut Coast, from Wailua to Kealia, for the large stands of coconut trees and because this area was the playground for Hawaiian royalty.

Now, you can explore local towns, go inland for waterfalls accessible by car, and explore the beaches. This is also a popular area to stay in due to its central location on Kauai.

See our guide on Where to Stay on Kauai for hotels and for choosing the best place to stay for your Kauai vacation. You’d hate to be far from the best things to do on Kauai, like on the map below.

12. Kapa’a Town

Don’t make the mistake of driving through Kapa’a on the way to North Shore without stopping.

Kapa’a is full of coffee shops, like Mokihana Coffee (formerly Small Town Coffee) and Java Kai , restaurants, and shopping. The cute town located along the ocean is worth checking out. You’d never guess it is the most populous town on the island.

If you do nothing else here, at least grab a plate lunch from Pono Market .

Directions: Kapa’a Town Central

13. Kapa’a Food Truck Parks

Kapa’a has the most food trucks per capita on Kauai. Is that an official stat? Absolutely not but there are a lot of food trucks littered around the town.

The two main food truck parks are located near Kapa’a Beach Park and All Saint’s Church. But don’t miss the standalone trucks mentioned in our Ultimate Kauai Food Truck Guide .

14. Kapa’a Beach Bike Trail

Don’t miss the multi-use path that follows the coast along Kapa’a Town. Explore the beaches, enjoy views of the coast, and just take in the sun. You can rent beach cruisers and e-bikes in Kapa’a for a few hours to enjoy a relaxing ride.

We rented our bikes from Hele on Kauai in central Kapa’a. They are located 30-seconds off the beach path.

Directions to Bike Rental: 4-1302 Kuhio Hwy, Kapaʻa, HI 96746

15. Kayak and Hike to Secret Falls

Perhaps no longer a secret waterfall, Uluwehi Falls (Secret Falls) is only accessible via a kayak tour down the Wailua River . Land the kayaks to go on a 1.5-mile roundtrip hike to the large waterfall. Such an experience is one of those Things You Can Only Do in Hawaii type experiences.

This easy kayak and hike tour is a great way to explore the Wailua River. Perhaps stay the evening to see the Fern Grotto and one of the best luaus on Kauai – Smith’s Family Luau .

Click for directions to Wailua River .

16. ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls

One of Kauai’s largest waterfalls is easily accessible by car. Make the short drive from Kapa’a Town to ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls, a roadside lookout. The falls are 151 feet tall and 40 feet wide.

Directions: ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls

Across the street from the falls is a lookout of the Wailua River and valley. Watch kayakers journey up the class 0 river.

17. Kid-Friendly Beach: Lydgate Beach Park

This is one of our favorite beaches on Kauai for swimming . Lydgate Beach Park is a long beach that can have rough surf for swimming, especially during the winter, but there are the Lydgate Park Pools.

The pools on the north end of the beach are protected from the waves by a large stone wall. The water is calm, there are large fish inside the pools for easy snorkeling, and the beach is sandy. There are lifeguards on duty, picnic tables, and lots of parking.

There is also a large, community playground called Kamalani Playground across from the pools.

Directions: Lydgate Beach Leho Dr, Lihue, HI 96766

18. Wailua Falls

Another Kauai waterfall that is easily accessible by car, Wailua Falls is located off the road on the south end of the Wailua River. The falls cascade into two streams that drop over 80 feet into a pool.

The best viewing is along the road, just before the parking lot for the falls. The size of the stream is dictated by the rainfall uphill. During our last visit, Kauai was hit by a tropical storm so the waterfall was roaring.

Wailua Falls is known in pop culture as the opening scene in the television show Fantasy Island . Kauai is famous for most of the filming of Jurassic Park and other movies. You can go on a guided tour of Kauai’s famous movie and TV scenes with pickup at your hotel.

Directions: Wailua Falls Hawaii 96746

19. Mountain Tubing Adventure

After a 4WD ride through a jungle, hop on a tube to float down a 100-year-old, hand-dug plantation canal system that will take you through caves and small waterfalls. Get wet and have a blast!

This tour is Kauai’s only tubing adventure through irrigation canals. Read more about the Mountain Tubing Adventure here .

Things to Do on Kauai: South Shore

South Shore Kauai is the most popular place to stay on Kauai. With many things to do on Kauai out your backdoor and the best weather on the island, it is no surprise visitors park themselves near Poipu.

The South Shore gets the best weather due to being on the leeward side of Kauai, or the dry side. You can expect less rain and slightly warmer temperatures than Princeville and Hanalei ( find Kauai weather data here ). Also, waves are smaller during the winter on the South Shore compared to North Shore.

See our Princeville vs Poipu Where to Stay article if you’re on the fence about where to stay on Kauai. South Shore Kauai is also home to many of our 7 Best Kauai Honeymoon Resorts . It’s also just a quick 25 minute drive from Lihue airport, so you go from plane to resort pretty quickly.

Below are all the best things to do on Kauai’s South Shore. See the Google Maps for directions.

20. Kauai Plantation Railway

Located just outside Lihue is the Kilohana Plantation , a 105-acre historic plantation. If you’re looking for something for the whole family, take a ride on the Kauai Plantation Train .

The 2.5-mile track (40-minute long tour) is a conductor-narrated journey through the history of the plantation. See plantation crops like sugar cane and taro plus tropical plants like mango, banana, pineapple, and others. Then, stop to get out to feed pigs, goats, sheep, and a donkey. Trains depart five to seven times per day.

For the parents, Koloa Rum is on the site for tastings and dining at Plantation House and Mahiko Lounge. But the luau is perhaps the main attraction.

Directions: Kilohana Plantation Depot, 3-2087 Kaumualii Hwy, Lihue, HI 96766

21. Luau Kalamaku

Located next to Kauai Plantation Train in Kilohana Plantation is Luau Kalamaku. The luau centers on a theatrical show of a family voyaging across the Pacific from Tahiti to Hawaii. Located in a large outdoor pavilion, the theater show with Tahitian drumming, Samoan fire dancing, and Hawaiian hula make for an immersive experience.

See if a luau is right for you in our Hawaii luau review discussion.

Highlights include:

  • Open bar and full buffet
  • Theatrical luau
  • Explore 60-acre plantation
  • Fire dancers and poi ball twirlers

Why we love it: The plantation grounds where the luau is located are beautiful and Henry loved going on the plantation train ride.

  • Location: Lihue, Kauai
  • Length: approximately 3 hours

Learn more and book Luau Kalamaku here . You can check out the other Kauai luaus that we recommend .

22. Historic Koloa Town

Established in 1835, the old plantation town is a walk down memory lane. Visit the Old Koloa Town Shops in plantation-era style, see the Old Sugar Mill Memorial, and have a local plate lunch.

We visit Koloa Town to grab food before hitting Poipu Beach in the south. Grab a plate lunch at Koloa Fish Market or one of the many food trucks. There are two food truck parks with award-winning food trucks in Koloa, see our Kauai Food Truck Guide for details.

Shave ice! South Shore Kauai is full of the best shave ice on Kauai. Visit The Fresh Shave or explore our other favorite shave ice on Kauai .

Directions: Old Koloa Town Koloa Rd, Koloa, HI 96756

23. Shipwreck Beach

Poipu Beach is the most popular beach on Kauai, but Shipwreck Beach is worth a visit.

Located in front of the Grand Hyatt Resort and Spa , Shipwreck Beach is one of the best beaches for sunsets and beachcombing. Locals come here for surfing and bodyboarding. While a south swell can make for excellent surfing, it can also make for dangerous swimming so check ocean conditions before you enter the water. Shipwreck Beach did not make our list of the best beaches on Kauai for swimming .

There is no lifeguard on duty so only experienced swimmers for this beach. There are restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and a large public parking lot.

Directions: Shipwreck Beach

things to do on kauai shipwreck beach

24. Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail

The Maha’ulepu Heritage Trailhead starts at Shipwreck Beach. The easy-to-moderate hiking trail follows the coast along dunes, under kiawe trees (wear closed-toed shoes), and cliffs.

The trail is significant for being one of the last undeveloped spots along the South Shore. Also, this is a sacred place so leave only footprints behind.

Directions: Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail, Koloa, HI 96756

Things to Do on Kauai - Mahaulepu Heritage trail

25. Most Popular Beach: Poipu Beach

If you’re looking for something to do on Kauai, this is more than a beach .

Not only does the beach have calm waters (heavier surf during the summer) and is beautiful with two crescent-shaped bays, it has a playground that kept our son entertained when he was done playing in the sand.

There are lifeguards on duty, picnic tables, limited shade, showers, and restrooms at the beach.

Plus, there’s a deli right across the street so whatever food or drink you need is easily accessible. Grab a puka dog with lilikoi mustard!

kauai best beach poipu beach things to do on kauai

Poipu Beach does get busy so don’t expect a secluded beach day. Walk over to Brenneck’s Beach as that is less busy and known for bodyboarding.

Quick Tip: Never turn your back on the Pacific. While the waters may look calm, don’t let your guard down. Keep your body facing the waves so one doesn’t sneak up on you.

Directions: Poipu Beach Koloa, HI 96756

26. Kauai’s Best Blowhole

Spouting Horn Park is home to a 50-foot blowhole. Powerful waves along the coast push up through a small hole in the lava rock, making for large geysers and a big roar.

The blowhole is a fun place to stop to watch the blowhole. Allerton Botanical Gardens is across the street if you’re looking for more things to do on Kauai’s South Shore.

Things to Do on Kauai: West Side

Welcome to the West Side. Home to Waimea Town, Hanapepe Town, and so many things to do on Kauai.

Hanapepe town things to do on kauai hawaii

We like to stay in the Poipu area and make day trips to this side of the island as there are few places to stay over here. Located firmly on the leeward side of the island, the Waimea area is dry and hot making for nice hiking and exploring the popular Waimea Canyon.

Here are the things to do on Kauai’s West Side in the map below.

27. Na pali Coast Tour

Finally, let’s talk about Napali Coast tours. The most popular thing to do on Kauai and for good reason. We included this in our 3-can’t-miss Kauai activities video .

Best viewed from a boat, the Napali Coast is a stretch of sea cliffs full of waterfalls, ancient Hawaiian fishing villages, sea arches, sea caves, and stories told by captains and crews.

Go on a snorkel tour , power raft and snorkel tour , helicopter tour , or a sunset dinner cruise . Just make sure you get out there to see the coast.

things to do on kauai hawaii napali coast tour

Most tours leave from Port Allen in Eleele on the West Side. Only a select few, like this power raft and snorkel tour , leave from Hanalei Bay during the summer (less surf).

You will find many of the popular boat tour companies here for the start of tours.

Directions: Port Allen in Eleele, Kauai

28. Forbidden Island of Ni’ihau

As the name implies, visitors are forbidden from visiting the Hawaiian Island of Ni’ihau . Owned by the Robinson Family since 1864, the island is home to the Robinson family and native Hawaiians who live a traditional way of life. Hawaiian is the primary language spoken on the island, with a population of about 80 people.

The closest way to get to the island is on a snorkeling tour to the Napali Coast and Lehua .

Lehua is a seabird sanctuary and crescent-shaped volcanic crater with crystal clear snorkeling. See monk seals, seabirds, and turtles along the coast.

The snorkel tour is a lot of fun and it is interesting to get close, but respectfully away from Ni’ihau. Watch my experience below to see if the tour is right for your Kauai vacation.

29. Hanapepe Town

Hanapepe is a small town along the Hanapepe River. The town is built in plantation-style architecture but is one of the few towns on Kauai not built by a plantation.

The entrepreneurial attitude of the town is present to this day with small coffee shops, art galleries, the westernmost bookstore in America, and restaurants. It is also home to an art market on Friday nights. Stop for morning coffee or for lunch as you explore the west side of Kauai.

Hanapepe was also the inspiration for the town in Disney’s Lilo and Stitch .

30. Hanapepe Swinging Bridge

Crossing the Hanapepe River near the center of town is the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge. The old wood bridge definitely swings when you walk across it. When you’re in downtown Hanapepe, look for the opening between the buildings to get to the bridge.

Directions: Swinging Bridge 3857 Iona Rd, Hanapepe, HI 96716

31. Taro Ko Chip Company

In an old green with white trim house are the best taro chips in Hawaii. Boiled in a kettle, Taro Ko Chip Company has been operating quietly for years in Hanapepe Town. Not pretentious with fancy packaging, check to see if they are open when you visit Hanapepe.

Directions: 3940 Iona Rd, Hanapepe, HI 96716

32. Waimea Town

Waimea Town is deep in Hawaiian history. Thought to be one of the first settlements for early Polynesian explorers and the first landing spot of Captain Cook in 1778, the town has had a large-sized role in maritime trading for Hawaii.

Today, the town is popular for visitors to explore before or after a trip to Waimea Canyon. We like to stop here for lunch and shopping as there are a lot of great, small restaurants in town.

Directions: Waimea Town

33. Waimea Canyon

Another popular thing to do on Kauai is heading to Waimea Canyon State Park . Nicknamed the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, incorrectly attributed to Mark Twain, the stunning canyon is full of waterfalls, lookouts, hiking trails, views of Ni’ihau island, a scenic drive.

Parking and entrance fees are now required, and paid on site. Enjoy half a day to a full day here to explore the area.

We like to drive up the canyon to stop at Red Dirt Waterfall, Waimea Canyon lookout, and finally to the top which turns into Koke’e State Park with Kalalau Valley Lookout. Our Kauai Itinerary has a full route with stops!

waimea canyon thing to do on kauai

34. Kalalau Lookout

If you can’t hike the Kalalau Trail, head to Kalalau Lookout for stunning views of this hard-to-reach valley. The cathedral cliffs give way to a lush, tropical valley that leads down to Kalalau Beach. From high above, you will watch helicopter tours and boat tours explore the coast.

The drive up is long and windy but the views are worth it. We have had bad luck in the past of being socked in with fog and clouds.

kalalau lookout things to do on kauai

35. Longest Beach in Hawaii

At the end of the road in West Kauai, is the longest beach in Hawaii. At over 17 miles long, the white sand beach has 100-foot sand dunes, desert cactus, and little relief from the sun.

Polihale Beach and State Park has restrooms, picnic tables, and showers. Camping is available by permit only.

Caution when visiting this beach for multiple reasons. First, access to the beach is by an unimproved dirt road that has deep sand. During rains, floods and mud make the road impassable. Four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended and rental car companies may prohibit driving on the road.

The beach has little shade, high winds at times, and no food available making for a long day out.  I’m not trying to scare you away but helping to make sure you have a good trip to Kauai, and not be stuck on the beach.

Directions: Polihale Beach Access Point – Lower Saki Mana Rd, Waimea, HI 96796

hawaii excursions kauai

Admire the endless beauty of Kauai by cruising through the jungle to the Fern Grotto, exploring a wildlife refuge and stopping in an idyllic bay in the shadow of lush mountains. Depart from the pier and enjoy a leisurely drive north to a marina on the Wailua River, one of the few navigable waterways in Hawaii. Starting high atop Mount Waialeale in the center of Kauai, the river tranquilly weaves through 20 miles of thick jungle. While cruising, you will stop at the geological wonder Fern Grotto, a lava-rock cave covered with tropical flora. Being a natural amphitheater, the grotto provides a wondrous setting and fine acoustics for the musicians who will serenade you with traditional Hawaiian tunes. Continuing on, you will head toward Kilauea National Wildlife Refuge to see its towering lighthouse and bird sanctuary. The refuge’s ocean cliffs and grassy slopes provide a fine habitat for some of the largest populations of nesting seabirds in Hawaii. Be on the lookout for red-footed boobies, Laysan albatross, and wedge-tailed shearwaters. (The lighthouse is open Wednesday through Saturday. When the lighthouse is closed, we visit the overlook area for about 20 minutes.) Then, you will stop for a quick lunch in Hanalei town at Ching Young Village. After that you will be treated to a view of beautiful, crescent-shaped Hanalei Bay and its signature pier. The landmark Waioli Huiia Church stands nearby, a reminder of the missionaries who settled here in the 1830s. Finally, you will depart the North Shore and return to Nawiliwili, but not before stopping for photos of the 150-foot Opaekaa Falls. Opaekaa means “rolling shrimp,” which were once abundant in the stream.

Nawiliwili (Kauai) – Hawaii

Last updated on June 7th, 2023 at 02:07 pm

Discover the natural wonders of Kauai from the port of Nawiliwili. Immerse yourself in the breathtaking landscapes of the Napali Coast, hike through the lush Waimea Canyon, or take a scenic helicopter tour over the dramatic cliffs and waterfalls. Relax on the picturesque beaches, explore the charming town of Hanalei, or embark on a kayaking adventure along the Wailua River. Kauai offers a true paradise for nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers.

Named after the wiliwili trees that used to line the harbor in Kauai, Nawiliwili is about two miles southeast of Lihue, Kauai’s main town. Nawiliwili is on the northwestern side of Kauai at the mouth of the Hule’ia Stream.

Visited by Captain James Cook in 1778, he called the Hawaiian Islands the “Sandwich Isles” after John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich. Nawiliwili Bay used to be the island’s main source of livelihood, through fishing, for over 300 years. The area was also a popular place to farm taro, a starchy root vegetable that is mildly sweet, and is a staple in the Hawaiian diet.

By the 19th century, Nawiliwili Bay was becoming a very important harbor on Kauai as the sugar cane industry grew. Landing cargo ships was a problem in the harbor as there were no natural deep water areas that existed along the island’s entire coastline. Philanthropist George Wilcox funded the installation of a breakwater to form the harbor and in the 1930s, Congress approved funds for the dredging of Nawiliwili Bay and more substantial breakwaters to be installed.

Today, apart from the airport, Nawiliwili Harbor is a busiest gateway to the island of Kauai. You may have even seen Kauai without knowing it. Part of the film, Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, was shot on location on the island.

This short YouTube video was shot by an Indiana Jones enthusiast: Me at Raiders of the Lost Ark Film Locations (Kauai, Hawaii)

Good To Know

Keep track of time in this port. There is only one cruise ship, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America , that is allowed to stay 24 hours. Other ships dock at sunrise and request passengers to be back on board around 3 or 4pm.

If you visit Hawaii, do NOT pick up any rocks or sand to take home. Hawaiian’s feel very strongly that everything has a life force and rocks and sand are sacred. It is hugely disrespectful to move, disturb or take the sand and rocks that have such a deep meaning to the Hawaiian people. If you need any more incentive to leave the sand alone, it is also illegal.

This article clarifies that sand on the beaches needs to stay on the beaches: EBay removes listings of Hawaii beach sand from its website

The island of Kauai and the Nawiliwili Harbor has tropical weather and has a stable pattern year round. Winter temperatures are in the high 70s°F and summer is in the mid 80s°F. Kauai experiences more rain than the other islands. Mount Waialeale on Kauai is one of the rainiest spots on earth. Nawiliwili gets about 50 inches of rain a year, which makes it very lush and tropical plants plentiful. Because of this lushness, Kauai is also known as the Garden Isle.

The official currency is the U.S. dollar. There are ATMs everywhere on the island. Major credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard are accepted everywhere.

English is the standard for everyday use, but Hawaiian is the official language of Hawaii.

Where You Dock in Nawiliwili (Kauai) – Hawaii

Ships will dock at Nawiliwili Harbor which is southeast of the island. Cruise ships are allowed to dock in the harbor from sunrise to sunset only. The exception to this is Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America . That ship is allowed to anchor for 24 hours.

The harbor is also a commercial cargo port and Nawiliwili Yacht Club is situated in the harbor.

Getting Around Nawiliwili (Kauai) – Hawaii

The island of Kauai is just 25 miles long and 33 miles wide, so it is fairly easy to explore.

You can walk from the pier in Nawiliwili to the nearby Kalapaki beach, but most passengers prefer to take the free shuttle to Anchor shopping mall and walk from there.

Free shuttles run to car rental offices, Walmart and smaller malls from the pier.

There is bus service on the island and you can see Kauai Bus Schedules at this site. You can also download TheKauaiBus app. It is free, and available on both Android ( Google Play ) and Apple ( Apple App Store ) devices. Remember that your time on the island will be limited. If you have your heart set on seeing a particular area, the bus will not be the most efficient use of your time. Other travelers have stated that it is not easy taking the bus, and that the bus is used mainly by residents to get to and from work.

As with rental cars, it is best to call ahead to reserve a taxi.

  • Kauai Taxi Company
  • Kauai Island Shuttle

  Rental Cars

There are several car rentals available on Kauai. They tend to be in high demand, so it is best to reserve a car before your arrival.

Here three that are recommended by GoHawaii :

  • Aloha Rents
  • Discount Hawaii Car Rental

Shopping In Nawiliwili (Kauai) – Hawaii

Even though the population of the island of Kauai is less than 75,000, there is every shop you need within a few miles of the cruise terminal including Target, Walmart, Costco and Safeway. If you would rather buy more local shops, or Hawaiian goods, here are a few options:

Harbor Mall – 3501 Rice Street, Lihue – 0.5 miles from port

Right across the street from Kalapaki Bay, is the Harbor Mall. It is the shopping center located closest to the cruise terminal. The mall provides a free shuttle to cruise passengers.

Locally owned shops such as Beachrail Hobby & Collectables, Kauai Island Treasures, Renee Zhang Jewelry Design, Twisted Turtles Yarn Shop and Yongs Aloha Fashions are a few of the shops you will find.

The Koa Store – 3-3601 Kuhio Hwy, Lihue – 3.3 miles from port

Koa is a hardwood that is often compared to walnut, but Koa looks like lustrous, swirled marble. The Koa Shop has beautiful handmade koa wood gifts. Jewelry, picture frames, shadow boxes, clocks and other items are available. There are items at every price point, so you’re sure to find something here.

Kilohana Plantation – 3-2087 Kaumualii Hwy, Lihue – 3.1 miles from port

This Tudor-style 16,000 square foot home has been restored and now contains galleries and boutiques. Local artwork and crafts are available from the shops, and there is also a ceramic shop where you can paint your own piece and have it shipped home. There is also a train that you can ride around the grounds.

Hilo Hattie – 3-3252 Kuhio Hwy, Lihue, 2.6 miles from port

A staple on the islands of Hawaii, this store is named after a famous hula dancer. Go here to find local style clothing for men, women and children. They have aloha shirts, mu’u mu’us, leis, shorts and mini dresses. They also carry souvenirs. It is also located next to Walmart.

CVS Pharmacy  – 2600 Kaumualii Hwy  Lihue – 2.1 miles from port

Longs Drugs is a branch of CVS Pharmacy. You will find the usual pharmacy and convenience store items such as medications, make up, hair products and household items. There are several Long’s Drugs in Kauai, but this store is the most convenient location near the cruise port, and is located in the same plaza as Target and Macy’s and across the street from Costco.

Dining In Nawiliwili (Kauai) – Hawaii

It may seem a world away, but the Hawaiian Islands are one of the fifty U.S. states. As such, you will find McDonald’s, Panda Express, Burger King, KFC and Taco Bell in Kauai.

The closest restaurants to the port are located less than a mile away around Harbor Mall and Kalapaki Beach.

Here are some restaurants in Kauai, and close to Nawiliwili and Lihue that have more flare than the fast-food options.

Duke’s Kauai – 3610 Rice Street, 0.6 miles from port

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Duke’s Kauai (@dukeskauai)

Located on Kalapaki Beach at the Kauai Marriott Resort, Duke’s is named for the beloved surfer, Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, this native son was a five-time Olympic medalist in swimming. He was the first person to be inducted into both the Swimming Hall of Fame and the Surfing Hall of Fame. He served as Sheriff of Honolulu from 1932 to 1961, being re-elected 13 times.

There is not much you won’t find at Duke’s. You can get calamari, coconut shrimp, Tristan lobster, ahi steak, prime rib and filet mignon. At the other end of the scale, mac & cheese, burgers and tacos are also on the menu. One item not to miss out on is the Hula Pie.

Lilikoi Restaurant, Bar & Grill and French Bakery – 3501 Rice Street, 0.5 miles from port

Here you will find an infusion of French, Hawaiian and Mexican food here. Lilikoi also has signature desserts and French pastries that are made fresh daily.  They are also known for their brunch and daily Happy Hour.

Mariachi’s – 3501 Rice Street, Lihue – 0.5 miles from port

If you are feeling like you want something south of the border, Mariachi’s has authentic Mexican cuisine. Enchiladas, burrito, tacos, chimichanga and nachos will definitely satisfy your cravings. It’s located right at Harbor Mall, so you can do some shopping after your lunch.

Uncle D’s Kaua’i – BBQ – 3501 Rice Street. Lihue – 0.5 miles from port

Uncle D’s is located in the Harbor Mall. Although it is not a dine-in restaurant, it is worth picking up some of their delicious BBQ to go. You will have your choice of pulled pork, buffalo or BBQ chicken, along with sandwiches of the same. Philly cheesesteak, brisket and mac & cheese are also menu items. If you love the sauce, you can purchase bottles to take home.

Things To Do in Nawiliwili (Kauai) – Hawaii

Unless you have arrived on NCL Pride of America , your time in port will be limited. A good plan of action is to decide beforehand exactly what you would like to do and see in the time you are on this beautiful island.

  Waimea Canyon State Park

The Waimea Canyon within this state park is also known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” It is one of Kauai’s most popular attractions. The canyon is 10 miles long and 3,000 feet deep. Two look out points at PuuKe Pele and Puu Hinahina give you the opportunity to have spectacular views of the canyon. There is a trail to hike, but it is a 3.4 mile round trip hike that takes about 3 hours, so keep the time in mind.

If you are not a resident of Hawaii, you will need to purchase park entry ($5 pp) and parking ($10 per vehicle) but this is valid for Waimea Canyon as well as Koke’e State Park , so you get two parks for the price of one.

Remember, too, that it is a sign of disrespect to take any rocks home from Hawaii, but in a state park it goes a step further; it is illegal. You could incur a fine of up to $100,000, so they are serious about this.

If you’d rather take an excursion to Waimea Canyon instead of navigating transportation on your own, check out this great one through Shore Excursions Group!

Kauai Coffee Plantation

This is the largest coffee farm in the United States. With over 4 million coffee trees planted on 3,100 acres, this plantation produces over half of Hawaiian coffee. Guided or complimentary self-guided tours are available and you will also be able to sample all the flavors of coffee brewed at this plantation.

Check out this video for a peek of the plantation:

Kamokila Hawaiian Village

The grounds of this four acre village is a re-creation of a traditional Hawaiian village, but it is on an authentic site. You will experience what native lifestyles were like centuries ago. Canoes are also available in an exclusive location on the Wailua River. You can avoid the crowds, and there is no hauling required.

Spouting Horn Kauai

Spouting Horn is one of the most photographed sites in Kauai. Formed by years of wave action, this blowhole is on the coastline’s lava rock shelf. The spout can be upwards of 50 feet high and it produces a hissing and roaring sound in the process.

Makauwahi Cave Reserve

Visit the largest limestone cave in Hawaii. The site is an important one to archaeologists, geologists and paleontologists because of the abundance of fossils found there. You enter the cave by crawling through a narrow opening and into a brightly lit circle opening. This 17 acre site preserves extinct Hawaiian native plants and animal species. Guided tours run from 10am to 4pm, and there is no cost to enter, but they do accept donations.

Kalapaki Beach

Close to the cruise port, Kalapaki Beach is a great spot for swimming, learning to surf or do stand-up paddle boarding. Kalapaki Bay is in front of the Kauai Marriott Beach Resort. It has calmer waters as it is protected from the ocean waves by a break wall. It is also fun to simply watch outrigger canoes come and go out of Nawiliwili Harbor. There is always activity at the Nawiliwili Yacht Club which frequently holds races. Before hitting the beach, stop in at DA LIFE . It is a locally owned outdoor gear shop located right on the beach at Kalapaki Bay. You will find all types of gear for any water activity that you would like to engage in. They are also great to give tourists insight into the best activities to pursue while in port. There are restrooms at Kalapaki Beach.

The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2024 and 2025

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Related: Holland America unveils epic cruise to Hawaii and Alaska for 2025

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.

Who should go: Couples who prefer the quieter ambience of a ship that doesn't allow anyone under 18 onboard, doesn't have a casino and offers presentations by regional experts that enhance immersion into local culture. Viking cruisers are generally over age 55.

HECO has the crews and equipment ready (at their Ward Ave. headquarters) to deploy to repair electrical outages resulting from high winds and rain from Hurricane Lane. PHOTO BY DENNIS ODA. AUG. 23, 2018.

UPDATE: 3:59 p.m.

Hawaiian Electric has restored power to customers in Manoa on Oahu and 2,518 customers in the Pukalana area of Maui.

“Heavy call volume to our trouble line may result in some calls not getting through. Please call again or DM your information to us. Mahalo for your patience,” according to a tweet.

Hawaiian Electric said as of 10:45 a.m., today crews have restored power to an estimated 1,353 customers without power since Sunday afternoon in Hawaii Kai.

The outages were caused by damage to one of the main transmission lines that bring power across the Koolau mountains into Hawaii Kai and the East Honolulu area, Hawaiian Electric said. About 4,000 feet of 46-kilovolt line fell across a second transmission line, taking both lines out of service.

Earlier today, Hawaiian Electric inspectors used a helicopter to survey the damage just below the Koolau ridgeline.

Crews today are cutting through dense vegetation on the Waimanalo side of the ridgeline to clear an access path for work trucks. Although the weather is favorable, heavy rains have created wet and muddy conditions.

Once that is complete, the damaged line will be removed from the second transmission line.

These repairs, however, are considered temporary and will leave only one transmission line feeding the Hawaii Kai and East Honolulu area.

“Hawaiian Electric will develop a long-term plan to repair the damaged line to provide backup power to the area,” said the company in a news release.

Forecasters, meanwhile, expect the wet pattern to continue over the eastern end of the state today as a cold front continues to head east.

A more typical tradewind pattern is expected to return Wednesday through the west of the week.

A high wind warning for Big Isle summits, and a wind advisory for Haleakala Summit, remain in place through 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Monday, 10:15 a.m.

Hawaii island residents may experience rolling power outages this morning and this evening due to generation shortfalls, Hawaiian Electric said today.

“The impacted areas and the timing of the outages are based on the amount of electric demand that needs to be reduced,” HECO said in a social media post. “Last night, 21,557 customers around the island experienced a 30-minute outage starting at 8:54 p.m. and ending at 9:59 p.m.”

Alerts and updates will be posted on HECO’S Facebook and X accounts. Hawaii County Civil Defense also will send emergency alerts through local radio and its Everbridge emergency notification system.

The ongoing power outages have forced four East Oahu schools to close today.

Kaiser High School, and Kamiloiki, Hahaione and Koko Head Elementary schools are closed today, according to the state Department of Education.

More than 1,300 customers remain without power in East Oahu, according to Hawaiian Electric.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE

Sunday, 9:45 p.m.

Hawaiian Electric has restored electricity to the majority of customers in Hawaii Kai and East Honolulu but about 2,200 customers will remain without power tonight and through most of Monday, the utility said in a news release tonight.

The company said the outage was caused by damage to one of the main transmission lines that bring power across the Koolau mountains into the Hawaii Kai/East Honolulu area. About 4,000 feet of 46-kilovolt line fell across a second transmission line, taking both lines out of service. The damage occured in an area of steep terrain in the Kuli‘ou‘ou Forest Reserve and without the ability to use a helicopter because of the weather, it’s difficult to reach.

Because of darkness, rain and the challenging terrain, crews cut part of the downed power line so a section of the other transmission line could be reenergized, restoring power to about 11,000 customers. Weather permitting, inspection crews will use a helicopter to fly above the area and develop a repair plan and schedule to replace the damaged line.

The remaining 2,200 customers are largely located in the vicitinity of Kaiser High School, Kamiloiki School and Hanauma Bay. They are expected to be without power through most of the day and Hawaiian Electric said it’s possible there will be additional outages as crews work to safely make repairs.

For updates and alerts, follow Hawaiian Electric on Facebook ( facebook.com/HawaiianElectric ), Twitter/X ( twitter.com/hwnelectric ) or via its free mobile app (available on Apple App and Google Play stores).

Some Hawaiian Electric customers in Hawaii Kai are now reporting that power has been restored.

Hawaiian Electric initiated brief rolling outages on Hawaii island starting at 8:45 tonight due to a generation shortfall. The emergency outages affect various areas around the island. The timing will depend on customer usage and available generation.

Customers are asked to immediately conserve electricity for the rest of the evening. Suggestions include turning off air conditioning and unneeded lighting, shutting off water heaters, and delaying activities like cooking, showering, laundry and dishwashing.

A flood watch for Oahu was canceled tonight while a flood watch for Maui County is expected to remain in effect through Monday.

About 13,000 Hawaii Kai utility customers may be without power overnight.

The state’s largest utility, Hawaiian Electric, posted at 7:15 tonight on X (formerly Twitter) that it is making repairs to damage caused by heavy rain and severe weather. Hawaiian Electric said the outage was caused by damage to one of the main transmission lines that bring power across the Koolau mountains. It said about 4,000 feet of a 46-kilovolt line fell across a second transmission line, taking both lines out of service.

Hawaiian Electric said that if it can reach the site, crews will use a weighted rope to try to pull the damaged line off the other line so it can be energized.

But the utility cautioned that if the crews aren’t successful, repairs will have to wait until daylight on Monday.

The cold front has moved through Kauai and the threat of heavy rain has ended. Thus, the flood watch has been canceled. A flood watch remains in effect for Oahu and Maui County through Monday. The front is expected to push through Oahu late tonight and through Maui County late Monday.

The front is starting to move down the island chain and is producing a band of moderate to locally heavy rain ahead of the front with improving weather conditions and westerly winds behind the front. The frontal boundary should be northeast of the Big Island by Tuesday. Expect a more typical trade wind pattern to return with showers favoring windward and mauka locations through the second half of the week.

A flood advisory is in effect for Oahu until 7:15 p.m. today.

A flood advisory means flooding is expected or occurring but is not considered a significant threat to lives and properties.

At 4:12 p.m., the radar indicated heavy rain moving for Oahu with rain falling at a rate of 2 inches per hour.

The flood advisory for Kauai remains in effect until 5 p.m. today.

At 3:51 p.m., the radar showed showers tapering off Kauai with rain falling at a rate of up to 1 inch per hour as area streams remain elevated.

Over 12,200 Hawaiian Electric Co. customers in Aina Haina, Hahaione, Hawaii Kai, Hawaii Loa Ridge, Kalama Valley, Kamiloiki, Koko Head, Koko Marina, Niu Valley, Portlock, Wailupe, Waimanalo were reported to be without power. Over 1,200 customers were without power in Ala Moana, Kapahulu, Kinau, Makiki, Manoa, McCully, Moiliili, St. Louis Heights and Tantalus. Over 1,300 customers in Kawailoa, Pupukea and Sunset Beach were reported to be without power.

The flash flood warning for Kauai County has expired, but a flood advisory remains in effect until 5 p.m. today.

At 1:41 p.m., the radar indicated heavy rain moving over Kauai at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour. A flood watch is also in effect until 6 a.m. Monday.

The flood watch is still in effect for Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai and Kahoolawe through Monday afternoon due to possible excessive rainfall.

Meanwhile, multiple power outages were reported across Oahu according to the Hawaiian Electric outage map .

EARLIER COVERAGE

A flash flood warning is in effect until 2 p.m. today for Kauai County, while a flood watch is in effect for Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai and Kahoolawe through Monday afternoon.

At 11:12 a.m., the radar indicated heavy rain over Kauai as Kauai Emergency Management Agency reported several roads across the island becoming impassable from water over roadways, according to the National Weather Service. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour, while flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.

“Stay away from streams, rivers, drainage ditches, and culverts, even if they are currently dry,” forecasters said. “Do not cross fast-flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.”

Meanwhile, flash flooding caused by excessive rainfalls remains possible for Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai and Kahoolawe. Flash flooding is also expected for Kauai and Niihau through late tonight.

“Flood-prone roads and other low-lying areas may be closed due to elevated runoff and overflowing streams. Urban areas may receive more significant flooding and property damage due to rapid runoff,” according to the forecast.

Forecasters said periods of heavy showers and thunderstorms along with a slow-moving front remain possible through Monday, while conditions are expected to improve from west to east Monday night through Tuesday as dry air arrives.

Has anyone done the Captain Andy’s Napoli coast tour?

We are here now, and were scheduled to sail yesterday on a morning snorkel tour with Captian Andy’s. Due to weather they changed where they would be sailing. We were offered a refund or an option for another sailing a different day. All they have available is the sunset cruise for tomorrow which has no snorkeling.

We have had a great time here, our 5th day. I have certainly realized all the planning I do can’t compete with weather here! Haha We haven’t been able to do everything we’ve wanted, but it’s caused me to relax and slow down. We can always come back to the island another time. 😊

' class=

Have done the sunset sail about 10 times - I would go for it. Snorkeling from the boat isn't that great, and it is only for about a half hour of your tour. The crew uses the time to set up lunch. Typically snorkeling is better from shore, but given all the rain recently that probably isn't great either.

The sun against the cliffs is beautiful in the afternoon, and the food is rather good. Whenever we have friends visit this is one of our must do activities.

Kauai’s Wailua River Bridge reopens as debris removal work continues

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Wailua River Bridge in the southbound direction of Kuhio Highway reopened to drivers Monday after a drill rig fell during heavy rains last week.

In an update at 4:40 a.m., the state Department of Transportation said lanes have been narrowed and advised motorists to drive with caution.

After three days of repairs , the reopening of the bridge is a sign of relief for the community as the important thoroughfare is one of the only ways in and out of the east side of Kauai.

While progress has been made in repairing the bridge, officials said their work is not over.

Their next task is clearing out tons of debris that remains stuck underneath the bridge.

Officials added that Sunday’s rainfall brought even more debris and that it will take probably at least a week to get it all removed.

Because of this, the Transportation Department said the southbound bridge will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily to continue debris removal.

Furthermore, crews are working on a plan to remove the drill rig, which is now cut in half. Officials said there’s no timeline when that will be completed.

This is a developing story, please check back for updates.
