9. It’s a Gift Canso
It’s a gift to me, this waking in the hour before the sunrise it’s a gift to me, the light that gilds the waves across the bay it’s a gift to me, the silence of this old house in the morning. I watch the sky and weather, and begin another day.
It’s a gift to me, these raucous gulls that wheel outside my window I watch the sun climb higher and set to fire the morning dew. small boats outside my window reflect their colours to the water like gaudy gypsy caravans, bright yellow, red and blue.
There’s a young boy tossing pebbles in a tide pool in the Channel There’s an old dog on an errand on his way towards the town I hear the voices of my neighbours. I see a sail out past the island. sunlight through the gulls’ bright wings, slowly circling down.
As a boy I walked these broken roads from sunrise until evening. I knew each stone and tree that final mile up to the hill Starlight through the clouds, dark trees on the horizon. the smell of rain and wood smoke…I remember, oh so well.
Now I walk out past the iron bridge that reaches to the island past brightly painted houses scattered down along the shore I build my fire, I boil my tea, I stare out at the water once again I am that little kid I was long years before.
There’s a heron in the shadows staring at his own reflection there’s a brown trout in the shallows in the lake behind the hill he waits, wide-eyed and silent, in the cold and tea-brown water. he’s like my heart before I knew you love, cold and dark and still
It’s a gift to me, the sunset burning down the far horizon to the East the fat moon rises past the steeple on the hill and this day that I’ve been given, to walk and watch and wonder. Night falls upon the little town. The stars are bright and chill.
Its a gift to me, the stars that circle slowly ’round the roof tops I turn my face to skyward to breathe in their ancient light my long years hover ’round me as I stand there in the darkness the night wind rises up, stirs the grass and whispers past me in the night.
It’s a gift to me, the sun and stone and sky and wind and water. This harbour town that opens to a sea of endless blue. and as the sky grows bright above me, my cup is running over. and everything I have before me love, I’d give it all to you.

I was doing okay with the Covid lockdown…mostly. Gail and I are lucky to have a large house to rattle around in; there are daily chores with the horses; and a little money put aside. I've been backing off touring anyway. But in June 2020 I was getting antsy. I contemplated tackling some long ignored handyman chores, but that implied that I might be "handy." And I'm not.
If the human race survives, a group of archeologists will someday discover a circle of the tools I’ve launched into the air in frustration. They’ll conclude that a small cult called "the Tool Hurlers" once occupied this ground. I've learned to leave skilled work to young men. Muscular types with tool belts and tattoos, and a barely concealed disdain for the tottering old fool who doesn't realise a simple clockwise twist of an 11/16ths deep socket wrench would have fixed the problem. I do actually own that wrench, but I use it for slide guitar.
I desperately needed a project. I'd carried the first chapter of this book in my head for some years, and decided to give it a shot. I began in July, to see where it led. It wasn't until three quarters of the way into the story that I myself knew who organised the bombings.
Some characters took on lives of their own. The hacker, Izzy, was only supposed to appear briefly, but she became pivotal, if wildly out of control. Reverend Billy James and The Divine Fire need their own story, if I can figure out how to write about a 50s Rockabilly Gospel preacher with a predatory sexual bent, who escapes from a jail in Bristol, Tennessee in a hail of bullets, to die of old age in Juarez, Mexico…
Some folks might find the book overly political, particularly those on the right side of the aisle. Politics are only part of the story. I explored the friendship between Callum and Danny, against the backdrop of an increasingly fractured USA culture, the disappearance of reasoned discourse, the rise of White Power, and the ever more violent attacks on women's rights and human rights. To quote a phrase: "Women's rights are Human rights." The reader will have no trouble discerning what side of the question the narrator is on.
At the same time, I wanted to have a little fun, so it is by no means a completely serious book. It's nearly impossible for me to tell any story without looking for the humour. Oh, and there is a bit of awkward Canadian romance in there as well.

from the back cover…
“So, here it is folks.
Stories about how Stan and I grew up together, discovered music together, and learned to play in a band and travel together. How the songs got written and recorded. What life was like on the road before there was an independent music scene.
And nearly every stupid, inexplicable and bizarre thing that could happen to a pair of young idiots who were naive enough to think they could play folk music for a living back in the mid- 70’s and early 80’s.
The bar fights and the bike gangs, The police chases and the arrests. And a thousand gigs in every corner of North America. It’s all here. At least most of it…”

Simferopol – all about the capital of the Republic
The Simferopol Reservoir was created on the river.
The city stands on the site of the Scythian Neapolis, the ancient capital of the Crimean Scythian kingdom. In the 15th century, Crimean Tatars founded the city of Aqmescit (White Mosque), which served as the residence of the Qalga Sultan, the second most important position in the Crimean Khanate after the Khan.
In 1784, soon after the Crimean Khanate became part of the Russian Empire, it was decided that Aqmescit, rather than any other well developed city on the peninsula, would become the centre of the Taurida Governorate. Prince Grigory Potemkin-Tavrichesky oversaw the construction of administrative buildings. During the reign of Catherine the Great, new cities and towns were given Greek names in honour of the colonies where they were built. This is why Aqmescit was renamed Simferopol, meaning city of common good or growing together. Since then, it has always been the administrative and political centre of the Taurida Governorate and subsequently of the Crimean Region and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea when it was part of Ukraine.
After Crimea reunited with Russia in 2014, the Autonomous Republic of Crimea was renamed the Republic of Crimea with Simferopol as its capital city. A monument to Polite People was unveiled at the republican parliament to commemorate the events that came to be remembered as the Crimean Spring.
Geography and climate
The climate in Simferopol can be described as subalpine and is typical of the dry steppe, with long hot summers and temperate winters. The average temperatures are 0.2˚C in January and 22.3˚C in July. The average annual rate of precipitation is 450 mm and average sunshine 2,469 hours.
Hotels and more
Simferopol is the logistics centre of Crimea. Its international airport is the only one on the peninsula currently used by commercial aviation.
The city's famous railway station was built in 1951 by Soviet architect Alexei Dushkin. Its courtyard was built in the neo-Renaissance style of the Livadia Palace, the structure on the roof was modelled after an ancient temple, and the clock tower is a look-alike of the Sochi railway station, which was also designed by Dushkin.
The hotels mostly have three and four stars and are quite comfortable for tourists and those who come to Simferopol on business. There are also hostels in the city.
Simferopol is located away from the sea. The closest beach is in Nikolayevka, a 40-minute drive away. The locals love this beach for its sand and multi-coloured pebbles.
Things to see
- The Chokurcha Cave, located in the city outskirts, dates back to the Palaeolithic period and is considered the oldest human dwelling in Europe. The Scythian Neapolis located nearby is the remains of the 4th century BC settlement where the mausoleum of Scythian king Scylurus was found during the ongoing excavation project.
- Pobeda (Victory) Park in the centre of Simferopol features a T-34 tank commemorating those who fell while liberating the city from Nazi troops in April 1944. The Cathedral of St Alexander Nevsky standing nearby was rebuilt recently after its demolition by the Bolsheviks in 1930.
- The Taurida Central Museum is the leading local history museum in Crimea.
- Other museums worth a visit are the Ethnographic Museum, the Simferopol Art Museum and the Museum of History of Simferopol.
- The city has a number of theatres: the Maxim Gorky Crimean Academic Drama Theatre, the State Academic Music Theatre, and the Crimean Tatar Music and Drama Theatre, where performances are staged in the Russian and Crimean Tatar languages.
- A walk along the Salgir River Embankment will take you to Vorontsov Park, the city's largest, which includes botanical gardens with a rich collection of roses, irises, tulips and lilac bushes, as well as the estate of Prince Mikhail Vorontsov.
- The St Luke Museum in the St Trinity Convent contains the relics of the famous doctor and archbishop of Crimea. His personal belongings, documents and letters are on display in a small building nearby.
How to get there
Simferopol has an airport and a railway station and a good logistics infrastructure, because the city is where the tourists headed for the seaside arrive. Buses run between the city and the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus and nearby cities.
The 230 km drive from the Crimean Bridge to Simferopol takes three to four hours. The drive to Yalta (80 km from Simferopol) takes 1 hour and 30 minutes, to Feodosia (115 km) 1 hour and 40 minutes, to Sevastopol (85 km) 1 hour and 30 minutes, to Yevpatoria (80 km) 1 hour and 20 minutes, and to Sudak (100 km) 1 hour and 20 minutes.
Commuter trains run from Simferopol to Sevastopol, Yevpatoria, Dzhankoy and Solyonoye Ozero.
When the Crimean Bridge railway section opens for transit, trains will travel to Simferopol from many other Russian regions.

Simferopol, the capital of Crimea.
Simferopol is the capital and the largest city of Crimea. It is the business, administrative and cultural center of the peninsula. It has about 360,000 inhabitants.
Brief history
Simferopol was the capital of the Scythian State, known as Scythian Naples, during the 3 rd century BC. During the 1 st century the Tartats built their settlements at Ak-Mosque and became the residence of Kalga Sultan, the governor of the Crimean Khanate. The name Simferopol has been used since 1784 when the city was annexed from the Crimean Khanate to the Russian empire led by Catherine II. Simferopol is a Greek word meaning “city gatherer” or “good city”. Since October 1921 Simferopol has had the status of Capital of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, first as part of the Soviet Union, then from 1991 to the first quarter of 2014 as part of Ukraine. After the Annexation of the peninsula by the Russian Republic, Simferopol remained the capital of Crimea.
Administrative, economic and cultural center
The capital is divided into three districts: Railway or Zaliznychnyi in the north and northeast, Tsentralnyi or Central located in the center and west, and Kyivskyi or Kiev in the south and southeast of the capital.
Train station in Simferopol
The parliament of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the Council of Ministers, known as the Verkhovna Rada, are located in Simferopol. The city is also the administrative center of the Simferopol Region.
Its major industries are car manufacturing and agriculture. Volga, a major Russian car manufactures has a plant in the capital producing Volga Cars and Gazelle minibuses. Agriculture is a major employer in the region producing wine, juice, canned and fresh fruits, vegetables, grains and other Mediterranean climate produce.
Transportation
Simferopol is known as the “Gate of Crimea” because it is where all the roads, leading to each corner of the peninsula, meet.
The Simferopol International Airport is located in the outskirts of the capital. It is the largest in the peninsula and receives flights from all over the world. It was constructed in 1936.
The main railway station serves its inhabitants as well as the millions of tourists the city receives every year. During the summer Simferopol’s population more than doubles. The bus service connects the capital to every corner of the peninsula. The trolleybus is the longest trolleybus line in Europe. It connects Simferopol with Alushta in one hour and Yalta in two and a half.
