Julia Bobak

Julia is a west coast canada-based professional coffee specialist who has spent nearly a decade immersed in the world of coffee research and professional brewing. she loves trail running, rock climbing, coffee, food, and her tiny dog — and writing about all of them. she starts every morning with a fresh americano from her home espresso machine, or she doesn’t start it at all..

The Bodum Travel Press lets you brew and drink a tasty cup of coffee anywhere, all in one user-friendly and shockingly affordable device.

Bodum Travel Press in black and white models

The Bodum Travel Press is one of the simplest and most convenient ways to enjoy coffee on the go. This versatile two-in-one product is both brewer and travel mug, making it the perfect compact and affordable way to bring coffee anywhere.

Is it a practical choice for your life on the move? I bought one to find out.

For the past few weeks, the Bodum Travel Press has been my constant companion, from the morning commute to the weekend campsite. Read on for my honest thoughts on this popular brewer.

What I Liked:

What I Didn’t Like:

A Full Review Of The Bodum Travel Press

The Bodum Travel Press is a travel mug and a French press rolled into one, and the result is more than the sum of its parts. This easy-to-use travel coffee maker can brew fresh coffee or tea on the go, and its stainless steel double-walled carafe keeps your drink hot for hours.

How does the Bodum Travel French Press work?

The Bodum Travel Press is a two-in-one French press and travel mug with double wall vacuum-sealed stainless steel construction. It’s essentially a small insulated French press with the addition of a comfortable heatproof rubber grip and a lid with a hole for drinking.

Heat Retention Testing

A big part of the Bodum Travel Press’s marketing is that it can keep your coffee hot for hours, so heat retention was the first thing I tested. I filled mine with 200 F water and measured the temperature at regular intervals by inserting a thermometer through the drinking hole ( 1 ).

It took about 2 hours for the water temperature to drop below 120 F, the minimum temperature at which I still enjoy hot coffee.

You can extend this time by preheating the carafe with boiling water before brewing coffee. This is a particularly important step if you’re out camping on a cold morning because the frosty stainless steel will cause your coffee to cool much faster!

The Flaw Inherent In French Press Mugs

French press travel mugs have an inherent design flaw which always makes me hesitant to recommend them. The coffee grounds continue to sit in the bottom of the mug while you’re drinking. So if you’re a slow sipper, you’re inevitably drinking bitter, over-extracted coffee by the time you reach the bottom ( 2 ).

An over-extracted brew will taste bitter, as the compounds that create sweetness and acidity will be overwhelmed

Thanks to a fine metal mesh and a silicone seal around the filter, this Bodum press is better at isolating the grounds from the water than some lower-end alternatives. But this problem simply can’t be eliminated entirely. Even if your coffee stays hot for two hours, its flavor starts to turn bitter after about 30 minutes.

Design, Style, And Sizes

I wouldn’t call the Travel Press beautiful or display-worthy, but it’s an attractive and practical design. In this case, I’m happy to see them prioritizing function over form.

It has a sleek stainless steel body, branded silicone grip, and plastic lid and knob. The travel press lid and grip are color coordinated, and Bodum periodically releases fun color options, like vibrant red or lime green.

Bodum Travel Press in red with lid removed

It comes in two sizes, 15 ounces and 12 ounces. Remember that the volume includes the space at the bottom for the grounds, so they can brew roughly 13 or 10 ounces of coffee, respectively. I suspect the larger model will be more practical for most users.

Whether you opt for the larger or smaller size, they have the same diameter, so they fit equally comfortably in your hand or car cupholder.

My only design complaint is that the knob on top of the plunger, while reasonably subtle, protrudes from the top. So when I’m drinking from the press, especially as I near the end, I can feel it hitting my nose. It’s not a big deal, but it does detract slightly from my coffee experience.

A Solid Choice For Camping And Travel

This coffee press was designed as a travel mug first and a French press second, making it a great option for brewing on the go. It weighs under a pound empty and is made from durable materials.

I love it as a French press for camping , especially if I only need to make a single serving. Not only is it portable and easy to use, but it saves me from packing a separate mug. I don’t know about you, but space always seems to be at a premium when I’m planning a camping trip.

Are Bodum travel mugs leakproof?

Bodum does make leak-proof travel mugs, but this travel press isn’t one of them. The extension of the plunger through the lid makes that impossible. The fittings are relatively tight, however, so it’s reasonably spillproof. I could knock it over without making a mess, provided I was quick to set it upright. But definitely don’t toss it haphazardly into a backpack if it’s full of hot coffee.

For a few dollars more, you can buy a Travel Press Set, which includes a regular lid to turn your Travel Press into a standard coffee mug. This is a nice money-saver if you’re also in the market for a Bodum travel mug, but it eliminates the brewing feature unless you like a mouthful of grounds with your coffee.

How I Brew With The Bodum Travel Press

One thing I love about French press brewing is you can make it as complicated or simple as you want, and you’ll end up with a pretty tasty cup regardless. When I’m out camping, I eyeball a few scoops of pre-ground coffee then fill the press with water just off boiling. At home, I have the tools for a more meticulous approach to crafting a delicious coffee.

Here’s my recipe for the 15-ounce model:

  • Bring water to 200 F in a kettle.
  • Rinse the travel press with hot water to preheat it.
  • Add 23 grams of coarsely ground coffee beans.
  • Add enough water just to cover the grounds and let them bloom for 30 seconds.
  • Add more water to fill the mug, screw on the lid, and start a timer.
  • Steep for 4 minutes, then gently press down the plunger to stop the extraction.

When you’re done brewing and drinking, all parts of this press are dishwasher-safe, so clean-up is a breeze.

Can you add milk to the Bodum travel press?

The Bodum loses a few marks for convenience because once the black coffee has been steeped and pressed, the only way to add milk or sugar is through the drinking spout, and then there’s no way to stir. If you like your coffee sweet, avoid any hassle by adding the sugar along with the grounds at the beginning.

Does The Bodum Travel Press Make Good Coffee?

Bodum Travel Press brews typical French press coffee. The presence of coffee oils in the cup gives it a robust flavor and heavy mouthfeel.

If you like the bold French press style of coffee, whether light roasts or dark, you certainly won’t be disappointed.

The first 95% of your coffee will be delicious and rich, but I’d suggest skipping the bottom 5%. Though the filter is quite good, there will inevitably be some grainy fines in your cup at the end. Plus, as I mentioned before, the last few sips are likely to be over-extracted and bitter.

A Versatile Coffee Maker

One great feature of a press-style brewer is that it can also steep a delicious cup of tea, using either loose leaves or a tea bag. If you’re an avid coffee and tea drinker, this will be very appealing. Personally, I like to brew a coffee in the morning, give the press a quick rinse, and then use it again for an afternoon cup of tea.

The Bodum can also be used to make single servings of French press cold brew . Just add grounds and cold water, leave the mug in the fridge overnight, and press the plunger in the morning.

You’ll have a great cup of cold brew on the go and will save a ton of money by skipping the coffee shop.

The double-wall insulated mug will keep your cold drinks cool and refreshing just as well as it keeps your hot drinks hot.

The Bodum Travel Press Is An Affordable Option

The Bodum Travel Press has some flaws, but overall, it performs as advertised. And as one of the cheapest 2-in-1 French press mugs on the market, it’s hard to argue against its value for money. It comes with a one-year warranty, but given the quality of assembly and durability of the materials involved, I can see this thing lasting decades.

That said, the value varies considerably based on current pricing. Bodum products are frequently on sale, and unless you’re in a hurry, it’s worth checking around or waiting a few weeks to find the best price.

For example, the MSRP of the Bodum Travel Press is $38.49, which is a decent value. But as I write this, it’s on sale for $20.99, which is a spectacular value. It’s hard to find a decent French press or travel mug for that price – let alone both in one product!

A plastic version of this travel press is also available for a lower price, but I’m not inclined to recommend it. It’s not as durable or as insulating, and I generally prefer to avoid plastic French presses.

Don’t Buy The Bodum Travel Press Coffee Maker If…

  • You just want a good travel mug: If you already have a favorite French press or other coffee maker, the 2-in-1 option is probably overkill. All you really need is a good travel mug to pour the coffee into. My current top pick is the Zojirushi Insulated Mug , which combines excellent heat retention with sleek style and easy operation.
  • You just want an insulated French press: What about if you already have a favorite mug? Then all you’re missing is the French press. The stainless steel double wall Stanley Stay Hot is a large-capacity option popular with backcountry campers. If you prefer the single-serving size of the Bodum, then check out Frieling, which offers a mini French press for brewing just 12 ounces.
  • You want to serve a crowd: Stick with the Bodum brand if you’re interested in a traditional glass French press at an affordable price. The Bodum Brazil and Bodum Chambord are both best-sellers available in a range of sizes up to 51 ounces.
  • You prefer a cleaner cup: If you prefer a less silty and over-extracted finish to your French press style coffee, the Espro Travel Press is the best I’ve tested in that regard thanks to its unique double-filter design ( 3 ).

If you prefer to avoid an oily brew altogether, the Aeropress (or more travel-friendly Aeropress Go ) is my favorite portable coffee maker, as perfect for a business trip as it is for an ultralight backpacking adventure. It brews a smooth and strong cup reminiscent of espresso.

The Verdict

The Bodum Travel Press is a clever portable French press that lets you brew coffee or tea anywhere. Better yet, it doubles as a well insulated travel mug that will keep your drinks hot or cold for hours.

It’s as easy to use as a traditional French press and as compact as a standard coffee mug. Whether you need an on-the-go coffee maker for the morning commute or a practical brewer for weekend camping trips, the Bodum Travel Press is a solid option at an unbeatable price.

10 Best Travel Coffee Makers in 2024 – Reviews & Top Picks

A travel coffee maker mounted to a hiking backpack

There are countless travel and portable coffee makers on the market, but we’ve handpicked the best ones to make your life easier. You may prefer a particular coffee-brewing method, and just because you are traveling doesn’t mean you should have to sacrifice coffee made the way you like it. No matter what you’re looking for in a travel coffee maker, from espresso machines to French presses, we’ve got you covered. Read on for our list of the 10 best.

  • A Quick Summary of Our Favorites in 2024

The 10 Best Travel Coffee Makers

  • 1. AeroPress Portable Coffee Maker – Best Overall

The AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker is everything you want in a travel coffee maker. It’s extremely lightweight (only 13 ounces) and compact, so it won’t take up much space in your bag. It makes coffee fast, with less than two minutes to brew a cup, which is perfect for when you’re on the go. It’s easy to use and easy to clean. Best of all, it’s completely manual. It doesn’t require electricity, so you only need access to hot water. This makes it ideal for any travel situation: hotels, beach houses, your friend’s house, or even camping and backpacking .

The only issue is that it can only make one cup of coffee at a time. If you want more than one cup, or if you want to impress your friends with your coffee-brewing skills, you have to go through the process all over again.

All in all, we think this is the best travel coffee maker of the year.

By the way… you can read our full review of the AeroPress coffee maker here !

  • Very lightweight
  • Makes coffee fast
  • Inexpensive
  • Easy to use
  • Easy cleanup
  • No electricity needed
  • Only makes a single cup of coffee at a time
  • 2. Bodum TravelPress – Best French Press Coffee Maker for Travel

We chose the Bodum Travel Press as the best french press coffee maker for travel, as it’s incredibly convenient. The travel cup comes with a plunger and filter, so you brew your coffee right in your travel cup. This means you don’t have to pack a separate coffee maker or paper filters, saving valuable space in your luggage. It’s made of a stainless steel double-wall design that keeps coffee piping hot, so be careful! It’s quick and easy to use, which is great for travel. It even comes in a few bold color choices.

On the negative side, this isn’t the best cup for daily use. That’s fine if you plan to use it just for travel, but the durability is questionable. The filter breaks down over time, and the lid tends to be flimsy.

To conclude, we think this is the best portable French press coffee maker. Take it on your next trip and see what you think!

  • Brews in a travel cup
  • Insulated stainless steel cup keeps coffee hot
  • Available in various colors
  • Quick and easy to use
  • Not as durable; breaks down over time
  • 3. Black+Decker Portable Single Serve Coffee Maker – Best Value

The Black + Decker Single Serve is another great portable coffee maker that brews right in the travel cup. It’s an auto-drip maker, but its compact design makes it ideal for travel and small spaces ( like a dorm room ). A permanent filter is included, so you don’t have to worry about disposing of or buying paper filters. It’s also very inexpensive.

It does have a couple of problems, however. It comes with a plastic travel cup, which won’t keep your coffee hot for long. You can upgrade to any 16-ounce travel mug, but that’s an added expense. It’s also not very durable and shouldn’t be used for daily use.

  • Compact design
  • Permanent filter
  • Plastic travel cup
  • Not very durable

NOTE:  You can see a breakdown of the best travel-friendly ESPRESSO makers here

  • 4. Keurig K-Mini – Best Travel K-Cup Coffee Maker

Keurig is the manufacturer of popular K-Cup makers , so it makes sense to include their most travel-friendly model on this list. The Keurig K-Mini is extremely compact and lightweight; it’s only 4.5 inches wide, and it weighs a little less than five pounds. It comes in a variety of colors, and it has a compartment for K-Cup storage. For more potent cups of coffee, it has a strong brew option.

If you’re the type of person who likes more than one cup of coffee in the morning, then this design might get a little tedious, since the water reservoir can only hold up to 12 ounces. Other than the strong brew option and a couple of size options, this brewer doesn’t have any extra features.

Read our full review of the Keurig Mini here!

  • Extremely compact and lightweight
  • Available in several colors
  • Strong brew option
  • Only enough water for one cup of coffee
  • No extra features
  • 5. GSI Portable Portable Pour-Over Coffee Brewer

The GSI Outdoors Java Drip is a great option for backpacking, camping, or boating. It collapses almost completely flat and is made of durable silicone. Fewer parts mean easy cleanup, and it’s easy to use. Just insert a paper filter, place the silicone disc over your mug or travel cup, and use the pour-over coffee-making method with hot water. It’s big enough to use a regular-size coffee filter, so it can handle up to twelve cups of coffee.

Even though the silicone makes it durable and easy to clean, it has a detectable smell, especially right out of the box. This can affect the taste of your coffee. You’ll also need paper filters, which are another thing to purchase, take up space in your bag, and dispose of.

  • Collapsible, lightweight design
  • Easy to clean and use
  • Brews 1-12 cups of coffee
  • Silicone can affect the taste of coffee
  • Paper filters needed
  • 6. Wacaco Minipresso Portable Travel Espresso Maker

If you can’t live without espresso while you’re traveling, especially in situations where you won’t have access to electricity, the Wacaco Minipresso is a great choice. All of its parts stack together into one unit, so it’s very compact. It comes in at 0.8 lbs, which is very light. It’s entirely manually operated via a pumping mechanism, so you don’t have to worry about batteries or finding an outlet.

However, with eight BARs of pressure, it’s just under the nine BARs needed for espresso. This means that the grounds are a bit under-extracted. Quite a bit of hand strength is needed for the pump, and even though the company’s video shows it being operated with only one hand, many people will need to use both. All those parts also mean it’s harder to clean, and some will require air-drying.

Read our full review of the Wacaco Minipresso here! (We loved it).

  • Compact and lightweight
  • Manually operated
  • Harder to clean
  • Espresso is under-extracted
  • Hand strength required
  • 7. Coffee Gator Travel Pour-Over Coffee Brewer Mug

The Coffee Gator Pour Over Brewer Mug is another option for pour-over brewing, where you can brew directly into the included travel mug. It’s made of vacuum-insulated stainless steel, and it has a copper lining to keep your coffee hotter longer. The metal filter means you don’t have to buy paper filters or have them take up space in your luggage. It comes in a range of colors, and it’s easy to use.

There are a few things that keep it from the top of the list, however. It has a flimsy lid, so the durability is questionable. The lid also has a few small parts, making it difficult to clean. This wouldn’t be a good choice for daily use, as the filter appeared to break down over time.

  • Brews right in the travel mug
  • Made of quality materials to keep coffee hot
  • Metal filter
  • Available in a variety of colors
  • Difficult to clean
  • Questionable durability
  • Filter breaks down over time
  • 8. Bialetti Portable Stovetop Coffee Maker

This is the compact, travel-friendly version of the Bialetti Moka pot you love. It’s extremely portable because it’s entirely self-contained. Just add ground coffee and water. The brew time is fast at under five minutes, and it’s easy to clean.

One major issue, however, is that you’ll need access to a stovetop or campfire. That’s not a problem if you’re staying in a hotel suite with a kitchen or traveling in an RV , but it wouldn’t be the best travel coffee maker choice for a regular hotel room, for example. It’s also a bit heavier than some of the other options, at a little more than a pound. It only makes one small cup, so it’s a bit of a pain if you want multiple cups of coffee.

  • Entirely self-contained
  • Easy to clean
  • Fast brew time
  • Requires access to a stovetop or fire
  • On the heavier side
  • Only makes one small cup
  • 9. Presto MyJo Single Cup Travel Coffee-Maker

The Presto MyJo is another good choice for camping, backpacking, or other traveling activity where you don’t have access to electricity. If you love the convenience of a K-Cup brewer, this is the travel coffee maker for you. It uses K-Cups, but it also comes with a reusable coffee filter that you can fill with your own ground coffee. The design is extremely compact, and it weighs less than a pound.

Unfortunately, the reusable filter is also pretty delicate, and it’s custom-made by Presto, so you have to order it from the company. The MyJo isn’t very durable, and the gasket leaks easily if you don’t have it properly sealed. It may also be convenient that no electricity is needed, but it requires a lot of force to pump the water through.

  • Extremely compact design
  • K-Cup compatible
  • Reusable coffee filter included
  • Reusable coffee filter is delicate
  • Tends to leak
  • Takes a lot of force to pump water
  • 10. Takeya Cold Brew Iced Coffee Maker

Can’t live without your iced coffee , even when traveling? Then the Takeya Cold Brew is the coffee maker for you. It’s easy to use; you only need coffee grounds and cold water. This design is especially compact and lightweight, at just under 10 ounces.

However, the handle is flimsy, and the lid tends to leak if you aren’t careful. The filter also never forms a perfect seal, so grounds always manage to escape into the coffee. Because of this, the overall design doesn’t seem very durable. It’s fine for occasional travel use, but it wouldn’t be a good choice for daily use.

  • Lightweight
  • Filter allows coffee grounds to escape
  • Tends to be flimsy
  • Prone to leaks
  • Final Thoughts – Finding the Best Travel Coffee Maker

We think Aeropress is the best travel coffee maker of the year. It’s lightweight and compact enough for air travel, and the fact that it doesn’t require electricity makes it ideal for camping. It makes both American-style coffee and espresso, so it can suit the tastes of almost everyone.

If you can’t leave home without your French press, then the Bodum Travel Press is the best for travel. The fact that it brews directly in the travel mug makes it great for travel, and it won’t take up much space in your luggage.

If you’re on a budget, Black + Decker’s Single-Serve Coffeemaker is inexpensive and also brews right in the travel mug. This is an auto-drip model that’s easy to use and familiar to just about everyone.

For those who love the convenience and efficiency of a K-Cup coffee maker, the Keurig K-Mini is perfect to take along. Its compact design ensures it won’t take up much space, while still giving you the speed and efficiency you’ve come to expect from a single-serve coffee maker.

Whether you prefer a cup of espresso or love the convenience of a K-Cup, we hope our reviews helped you find the travel coffee maker to suit your needs. We truly hope that our guide helps you find the best portable coffee maker for your tastebuds. Happy brewing!

6 Best Cheap Coffee Makers for Brewing on a Budget of 2024

bodum coffee maker travel mug

Cheap coffee makers aren't hard to find, but knowing which ones perform better than others is another story. When shopping around, consider your budget, how many people in your household drink coffee, your available space, and your preferred brewing method.

"Drip coffee makers offer some of the cheapest solutions for home use," says Maria Caceres, coffee expert and owner of The Coffee Temple, adding that moka pots and pour-over systems can be good, too, if you're open to non-electric brewing.

Our top choice is the AmazonBasics Coffee Maker, a simple drip-style brewer that keeps coffee warm in the carafe. But we found several of the best cheap coffee makers, all under $40.

Table of Contents

  • Best Cheap Coffee Makers
  • Things to Consider When Buying
  • How We Chose

AmazonBasics Coffee Maker  »

AmazonBasics Coffee Maker

Both sizes are less than $30

Simple to use

Warming plate keeps coffee hot

No automatic shutoff

Brewing pressure can be finicky

If you're in the market for a cheap coffee maker that gets the job done without breaking the bank, look no further than Amazon. The mega-retailer's private-label brand, AmazonBasics, has tons of, well … basic household goods. It started launching small appliances in the past couple of years, including vacuums, toasters, and coffee makers.

This simple drip coffee maker comes in two sizes (5 or 12 cups) and is super simple to use. Just fill the water reservoir with how many cups you want to brew, add the appropriate amount of ground coffee to the reusable filter basket, and then switch it on.

A warming plate keeps your brewed coffee hot until you turn the machine off. This is a nice feature, but it means there's no automatic shutoff, so you'll have to remember to power it down. (A red light on the power switch lets you know when it's still on.)

Also, Amazon notes that adding too little or too coarsely ground coffee can mess with the brewing pressure, so be sure to follow the (very straightforward) directions. Both sizes are less than $30 and are backed by a one-year warranty.

Salton Space Saving 1 Cup Coffeemaker  »

Salton Space Saving 1 Cup Coffeemaker

Small footprint that’s not much wider than a mug

Includes matching ceramic mug

Easy to use and clean

No auto-shutoff feature

Only brews one cup at a time

Barely wider than a standard mug, this Salton coffee maker is ideal if you’re short on space. It makes a great compact option for an office, studio, shop, or even a dorm if you’re looking for an affordable gift for a college student .

This single-serve machine brews coffee directly into a cup. Though it's meant to fit various mug sizes, it also comes with a matching ceramic mug.

The Space Saving Coffee Maker has a permanent filter. Just add a couple of scoops of ground coffee, fill the reservoir with a mug of water, and then switch it on. Cleaning mostly involves emptying the used grounds and rinsing out the filter.

One thing this coffee maker doesn't have is an automatic shutoff feature, but this isn't a deal-breaker, considering the very low price tag.

Mr. Coffee 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker  »

Mr. Coffee 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker

Brews up to 12 cups per batch

Programmable start time

Adjustable brew strength

Dishwasher-safe parts

Not ideal for left-handed people

May take up more counter space than other models

The Mr. Coffee 12-Cup Coffee Maker comes recommended by Destiny Chatman, consumer expert at TopCashBack.com. The large-capacity design is an excellent choice for households with multiple coffee drinkers.

This coffee maker has more features than many other inexpensive models. The auto-pause function allows you to lift the carafe and pour yourself a cup mid-brew, and the automatic shutoff feature powers down after four hours. You can also program it to brew bolder coffee or start brewing at a specific time the following morning.

Some reviewers have noted that this coffee machine isn't very accommodating for left-handed people because the lid opens to the left. But cleaning is a breeze, thanks to the dishwasher-safe filter basket and carafe.

Frigidaire Retro Single-Serve Coffee Maker  »

Frigidaire Retro Single-Serve Coffee Maker

Saves money on wasted coffee or expensive pods

Fits all mugs and some travel thermoses

User-friendly and easy to clean

Grounds may drip after brewing

Certain color options cost more

Caceres tells 360 Reviews that single-serve models can be a good money-saving option, as they only brew exactly as much coffee as you'll drink. We like the Frigidaire Retro Single Serve Coffee Maker. Not only is it less than $30, but it uses a reusable filter rather than pre-portioned pods (which can add up), so you can cut down on how much you spend on actual coffee.

Virtually all mugs and even some travel thermoses will fit underneath the dispenser, and you can fill the reservoir with up to 10 ounces of water per use. Once the water and ground coffee are in, brewing is as easy as pressing the power button.

Some buyers have mentioned that the wet grounds sometimes drip out after a brewing cycle. But most reviewers say the machine works well, and many like the vintage-inspired appearance.

This coffee maker takes just three minutes to make a cup of coffee and automatically shuts off after each use. Cleaning is no problem since there's no carafe to wash, and the brew basket is dishwasher-safe.

JoyJolt Italian Moka Pot  »

JoyJolt Italian Moka Pot

Makes espresso-like concentrated coffee

Lightweight, fast-heating aluminum

Works on all cooktops

Handle can get hot

Not actually Italian-made

Espresso machines are typically pricey. But if you prefer concentrated espresso over drip coffee, Caceres recommends a moka pot as a wallet-friendly alternative. This option from JoyJolt is less than $25. It's made of lightweight, quick-heating aluminum like many more expensive moka pots.

While the knobs and handles are supposed to be heat-resistant, some buyers have said the handle gets hot to the touch, so be careful when pouring. And although this brewer is modeled after traditional Italian moka pots, it's not made in Italy.

We appreciate that this moka pot can be used on electric, gas, and ceramic cooktops. And it comes in a handful of hues for those who want to add a pop of color to their kitchen.

BODUM Pour-Over Coffee Maker With Permanent Filter  »

BODUM Pour-Over Coffee Maker With Permanent Filter

Simple, affordable system

Heat-resistant cork apron

Dishwasher-safe components

Some sediment may get through the filter

Somewhat thin glass

Caceres says pour-over coffee makers can also be a smart choice for those looking for a cheaper option. "They are all commonly simple in design and very affordable," she explains. This one from BODUM is priced significantly lower than similar products but is still highly reviewed.

The set includes a 34-ounce carafe made of borosilicate glass with a heat-resistant cork apron to prevent burning your hands while holding the vessel. It also comes with a measuring scoop for coffee grounds and a lid you can use when pouring the brewed coffee.

You'll get a dishwasher-safe stainless steel filter, which saves you money on paper filters. That said, some buyers have noted that although the coffee tastes good, it can get sediment in it without a paper filter placed inside the steel basket.

The glass has mixed reviews, too, with some saying it's fragile and others describing it as strong. If you're worried about it breaking, you can always opt to wash the carafe by hand.

The Bottom Line

Cheap coffee makers are widely available in stores and online, but not all are created equal. Though you can expect most low-priced designs to have minimal features, the best options are user-friendly, efficient, and reliable. Our top choice is the AmazonBasics Coffee Maker on account of its simple, easy-to-use design and convenient warming plate that keeps brewed coffee hot.

Things to Consider When Buying Cheap Coffee Makers

Price:  Coffee makers range drastically in price. On the higher end, they can be upwards of $1,000, while the most affordable options typically fall around $25. Everyone's idea of a "cheap coffee maker" is different, but the models we chose are all less than $40. Before shopping around, think about how much you'd like to spend and what features you're willing to give up in order to stay within your budget.

Type:  According to Caceres, drip coffee makers are generally the least expensive style. These machines can brew a full pot of coffee – usually 5 to 12 cups at a time.

To avoid wasting money on brewed coffee you don't end up drinking from a larger carafe, consider a single-serve unit. Caceres says to "be mindful of the ongoing cost of pods," but you can find options with reusable, washable filters that don't call for pre-portioned coffee pods.

"For individuals who like very strong, espresso-like coffee, the moka pot gives them that on the cheap," Caceres says. She adds that pour-over systems can be a good option as well. "Generally $15 to $40, these devices will join with a kettle in providing great coffee without dropping a wad on a machine."

Extra Features and Accessories: Cheap coffee makers tend to have fewer features and accessories than pricier options, but there are a few useful things you might want to look for. Some machines have automatic shutoff features so you don't have to remember to power them down. Others have pause-and-pour functions, allowing you to pour yourself a mugful of coffee in the middle of the brew cycle.

Many of the budget-friendly coffee makers we chose also have permanent filters. This means they can be washed and used repeatedly while saving you money on paper filters.

How We Chose the Best Cheap Coffee Makers

To compile this list of the best cheap coffee makers, we consulted Maria Caceres, coffee expert and owner of The Coffee Temple , and Destiny Chatman, consumer expert at TopCashBack.com . With their insight and buying tips in mind, we researched several below-$40 options that stood out for user-friendliness, cost-saving features, ease of cleaning, functionality, and overall value.

You don't need to spend a lot of money on a coffee maker, even if you make coffee at home every day. Some basic machines are as affordable as $25 and get the job done. If you want something a little more advanced but not an overly steep investment, consider the $100 range.

Make sure the machine is clean, since residual oils and burnt grounds can create a bitter taste. Beyond that, you can use freshly ground coffee for a better flavor and filtered water if your tap water is mineralized. Using the proper coffee-to-water ratio can also make a big difference.

Caceres recommends moka pots for those who want to brew espresso-like coffee at home without spending a lot of money. "At a typical price point of $20 to $50, this would give a user the chance to make a very concentrated brew without suffering the hefty price of an espresso machine," she says.

An affordable coffee maker may not last as long as a more expensive model. In some cases, cheaper designs might only hold up for a year or so, but others could last several years. To make your coffee maker last longer, clean it regularly and follow the user manual's guidance for maintenance and daily use.
