Cincinnati seminary sent Tom Cruise packing

did tom cruise live in ohio

Before he got into showbiz and Scientology, Tom Cruise attended a Roman Catholic seminary in Cincinnati — and was asked to leave for stealing booze, according to the Daily News .

Cruise, then known as Tommy Mapother, attended St. Francis Seminary for two years in the early 1980s. The future actor was sincere about becoming a priest, according to Shane Dempler, a close seminary pal.

Seminary officials have said Cruise chose to leave the school when his family relocated from Louisville, Ky., to New Jersey, but Dempler recalls the situation differently.

One night, he said, he joined Cruise in stealing liquor from their Franciscan fathers. Dempler tossed bottles out a window to Cruise, who waited below.

"Most broke, but we managed to get a couple and hide them in the nearby woods," Dempler said. "The priests didn’t realize until some of the other boys found out about our plan and snuck into the woods and got drunk. They were caught staggering down the road .?. ?. and forced to confess. The school wrote a letter to our parents saying they liked us but would prefer if we didn’t return. So we weren’t kicked out — just preferred not to go."

Why Tom Cruise, Khloe Kardashian, Chris Rock & 6 other celebs are moving to Dayton

  • 10 out-of-town concerts that are worth the drive
  • Happy birthday Justin Bieber!
  • 50 things to do in Dayton in March

If you're anything like me, you've heard by now that Tom Cruise is moving to the area.

Well, he’s not.

the world’s “premiere fantasy news site” (whatever the hell that means), is spreading the

lie that the Top Gun actor is moving to Oxford.

Again, he's not.

Come on folks, not everything you read on the Information Superhighway is true.

Here's part of the lie:

"In a surprise to everyone in Hollywood and certainly everyone in Oxford, Tom Cruise announced today in an interview with People Magazine that he was 'tired of the Hollywood lifestyle' and that he wanted to 'live in a place where people were people and whose sincerity you didn't have to question.'  He recently visited Oxford while scouting out a film location with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and, according to Bruckheimer, 'Tom immediately fell in love with the relaxed lifestyle and the tranquil beauty of the surrounding countryside and was telling everyone that he was going to move there.'"

The site also has the A-lister moving to Maryville, Tennessee and Indianola, Iowa.

Cruise is not the only star the site says is surprising Hollywood by leaving it in the dust.

Singer Katy Perry evidentially likes cows and chicken so much that she’s moving to Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Justin Bieber likes them, too. (By the way, happy birthday, Biebs !)

JB gives the exact same quote about cows and chickens in Sandy Oregon that Katy gave about them in Rock Hill.

"'I want a farm, I want cows, I want chickens!' Justin told Us Weekly with an excited laugh. 'I'm not giving up my career, I just want to move to a place that feels so different than what I've been used the last several years of my life. For me, that place is Sandy, Oregon.'"

They don't want cows or chickens.

That’s some crazy clickbait there, McKenzie Post.

Then again, maybe they are onto something.

How about these rumors for your brain:

  • Oscar winner Cate Blanchett is moving to Springboro because it has great garage sales.
  •  Leonardo Di Caprio i s going to sell shells in the Oregon District.
  • Tom Cruise is not moving to Oxford until he sells his bungalow  in Belmont.
  • Comedian Chris Rock is moving Yellow Springs to pursue an underwater basket weaving degree at Antioch Mcgregor.
  • Liam Hemsworth Is moving to Lima for obvious reasons.
  • Rihanna just bought a house in Riverside. Bring her an underwater welcome basket.
  • Halle Berry just invested in a Huber Heights movie theater. It will not sell popcorn.
  • Khloe Kardashian i s moving to Clayton to get away from Kanye West.
  • Miley Cyrus plans to enroll in the Miami Valley School even though she's too old for prom.

WCPO - Cincinnati, Ohio

Remember when 'Rain Man' was filmed here? For many, it left a lasting impression

Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise walked down the tree-lined lane at St. Anne’s Convent, drove across the Roebling Suspension Bridge and secured a place in movie history.

When “Rain Man” was released in December 1988 and went on to win four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, it also secured Cincinnati’s place as a filming destination. Many scenes early in the film — in which a self-absorbed Charlie Babbitt (Cruise) meets Raymond, the older brother he never knew he had (Hoffman) — were filmed here.

In honor of the 30th anniversary of the film’s haul at the 1989 Academy Awards, here’s a look back at Cincinnati’s starring role through the eyes of local people who were involved in or touched by the production.

Joe Bristow is a current owner of Pompilios in Newport, the setting of the film’s iconic toothpick scene. “Rain Man” memorabilia is still on display there.

Lisa Burn is the younger sister of the late Lori Holladay, who scouted locations for “Rain Man” and later founded the Cincinnati Film Commission (now Film Cincinnati). Burn spent time on set during filming.

R.J. Cavallaro was assistant manager of the (now defunct) Ohio Film Bureau at the time.

Scott Froendhoff is an amateur historian and leads tours of Evergreen Cemetery in Southgate, Kentucky, where the funeral scene in “Rain Man” was shot.

Sr. Alice Gerdeman is provincial superior of Congregation of Divine Providence at St. Anne Province Center in Melbourne, Kentucky. The convent served as Wallbrook, the institution where Raymond lived.

Larry Holladay is Lori Holladay’s husband and spent time on set.

Frank Mazzei was an owner of Pompilios when “Rain Man” filmed there.

Kristen Schlotman is current executive director of Film Cincinnati, the nonprofit that works to bring productions here.

Childhood drives and a fortuitous trip to Los Angeles

R.J. Cavallaro: “I had gone out to LA on a trip where we promoted Ohio to the film industry … Lori Holladay and Jacky DeWert (who was working with Holladay at the time) came with us because they were interested in what we did and promoting Cincinnati. One of the trips we made was to a friend of mine, (producer) Mark Johnson, for me to say hello and just touch base. Lori and Jacky came with me and we were talking … (Mark) said, ‘Oh, I’ve got this movie, it’s called ‘Rain Man.’ … But they were having problems finding the location (for Wallbrook).”

Larry Holladay: “They were in a hurry, and very shortly after that, they came out to visit ... Lori took them all over the place. … They went everywhere, took photographs of all kinds of stuff. Including St. Anne’s Convent, which (Lori) loved.”

Cavallaro: “The convent over in Northern Kentucky was the location that won the job coming to the Cincinnati area. … We had found this needle in the haystack that they were looking for.”

Lisa Burn: “I always loved (Lori’s) stories, how she found all of those locations. There are seven kids in our family. She’d always tell it how our dad would take us out driving on Sundays and listen to the Reds game on the radio, I’m sure to try and tire some of the young ones out. He would take us everywhere, and she just knew all of these locations from him driving all over the area. That’s how she knew the convent.”

The actual filming, of course, caused a stir

Holladay: “Once people knew it was Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman, then it started to get a lot more attention very quickly … It was pretty exciting to have them in town.”

Scott Froendhoff: “A photographer from the Kentucky Post came up to me and asked me if I could get him closer to where they were shooting up there (at Evergreen). … So I took him down through the woods, and we started going up into the cemetery, and we actually crawled up the hill on our bellies, like Army-style, to get him a little closer.”

Dustin Hoffman was the outgoing one

Frank Mazzei: “They were all very nice, all very congenial. … Dustin Hoffman was very friendly. … Tom Cruise was a little quieter. He would go out to his trailer between scenes. But then at the end, when they were all done, he stayed out in the parking lot for a couple of hours and signed autographs for neighbors and everybody that was around. They were very nice to work with.”

Holladay: “Dustin Hoffman was very, very nice and very approachable ... He was just easy to talk to and friendly. Tom Cruise was more remote, you know, more private. I think he’s just more introverted, which is fine.”

Actors took in Cincinnati scene — even go-karts

Joe Bristow: “There's a really neat picture of Dustin Hoffman taking a bite of a Dixie Chili cheese coney. The story was that he had never heard of cheese coneys before, so somebody went to Dixie Chili and bought some coneys.”

Cavallaro: “Dustin and Tom, they had a great time in Cincinnati. I took Dustin to a few of the Cincinnati Reds’ games … Marge (Schott’s) assistant asked Dustin if he wanted to meet Pete Rose. … We were walking onto the field because we had to get to center field. … And all of a sudden I think the cameras picked up that it was Dustin walking on the field and you just heard … this incredible applause begin. Dustin looked at me and he said, ‘Hmm, I wonder who that’s for?’ It was just a great moment.”

did tom cruise live in ohio

Mazzei: “We were able to feed them a nice dinner (at Pompilios). They particularly liked our lasagna.”

Cavallaro: “We went somewhere close to Cincinnati where they race go-karts … somehow word got out. And there was a line of fans there waiting to get Tom’s autograph, and he was gracious enough to go over and sign.”

did tom cruise live in ohio

The fun wasn’t limited to time off the set

Cavallaro: “One of the surprises was Robin Williams showed up on set one day. Barry (Levinson, the director) and Mark (Johnson) produced ‘Good Morning, Vietnam.’ (Williams) came one day, and he kept everybody in stitches. He was so funny.”

Burn: “(Hoffman) was telling stories about how he’d been filming ‘Tootsie,’ you know, where he dressed up as a woman. He was telling everybody how he called up Jack Nicholson and had him meet him for lunch, but he came in costume. And of course Jack Nicholson didn’t know who he was, because nobody had seen the character from ‘Tootsie.’ ”

Sr. Alice Gerdeman: “I remember one day, when just as they were leaving, Dustin Hoffman, one of his children had a birthday. He was talking on the phone to that child, and some of us walked by and he said, ‘Will you sing Happy Birthday?’ ... So we sang.”

did tom cruise live in ohio

But they took their work seriously

Sr. Gerdeman: “When Dustin Hoffman came in the morning … he would sit on a bench looking out over the hills and get himself into the character that he was going to play, and he stayed in it all day long.”

Cavallaro: “I’ve worked on several productions. I still say that’s the best movie I’ve ever worked on because the crew was so good and the actors were so great.”

did tom cruise live in ohio

“Rain Man” made an impact on those involved in both the short and long term

Holladay: “Locals were in some of the scenes, and lots of production people got hired, and they used a lot of hotel rooms, and they paid people to rent their homes.”

Mazzei: “That kind of publicity you can’t pay for. It certainly did us well over the years. … (Pompilios’ business) probably jumped a good 20 percent almost immediately and built on that as the years went on.”

did tom cruise live in ohio

Sr. Gerdeman: “We were looking at that time to collect some funds to be used for a transportation vehicle for our sisters who were missionaries in Ghana, West Africa. And so it worked out very well for us to receive this payment (for filming) so we were able to purchase that vehicle for the sisters who were our missionaries. … We call it divine providence.”

Cavallaro: “It is one of the highlights of my life, being associated with that movie. And being able to film it in a great area like Cincinnati, it was very special. It’s still really special to me.”

did tom cruise live in ohio

It helped Cincinnati grow into a filming destination

Kristen Schlotman: “In my mind, that’s what started the enthusiasm for Cincinnati being a destination for major motion pictures.”

Holladay: “Because it was identified as Cincinnati, and because there were two huge stars and it won awards, it was greatly beneficial to putting Cincinnati on the map as a filmmaking place. Beautiful, historic, a safe place to shoot, a good place to shoot, a very affordable place to shoot, good people to shoot with — all kinds of reasons to shoot here. And that really helped (Lori) start to get more films.”

did tom cruise live in ohio

The movie hasn't been forgotten in local lore

Bristow: “We totally, absolutely get people that still come in to this day, probably every day, that ask about it. … They still come in and they ask, ‘Where did they sit? What did they eat? How long were you closed? How did it come to be that they were at your spot?’ … It still is exciting.”

Froendhoff: “You always get an ‘ooh, ah’ type of thing with the older folks (when he points out the filming location on cemetery tours).”

Its legacy continues today

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Maverick came through.

Following up on a promise he made to the Ohio State University Marching Band in December, Tom Cruise (or Cruise’s people, it’s not likely he made the call to reserve the building) set up a screening of the new Top Gun sequel to reward TBDBITL for its Top Gun-themed halftime show last season.

“Top Gun: Maverick” is scheduled to be released on May 27, but members of the marching band can attend a screening on Friday at the Wexner Center for the Arts on Ohio State’s campus at 7 p.m. All the members of last year’s marching band were invited, and according to Ohio State, more than 200 students and staff are expected to attend.

The world premiere of the movie took place on the USS Midway in San Diego on May 4.

The band performed the Top Gun show on Nov. 13. Cruise responded with a note that was read to the band during rehearsals for the Rose Bowl in late December.

Dear Band, The Top Gun tribute was fantastic. What a phenomenal performance – thank you! I’d love for you all to be my guests for a special screening of Top Gun: Maverick in Columbus this Spring.

And now that screening is almost here.

Here is that performance that so impressed Cruise.

'Rain Man' put Cincinnati on Hollywood's map

  • More Hollywood films followed %27Rain Man%27 to Cincinnati

The huge pin oak trees are gone, but the impact of the Oscar-winning Rain Man lingers 25 years later.

Four Academy Awards – including best picture and actor (Dustin Hoffman) – lured a dozen major Hollywood films to Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky in the next 10 years, helping build the local film production community.

" Rain Man definitely put us on the map," said Lori Holladay, who scouted locations for the movie in early 1988.

"All I had to say was, 'You know, where Rain Man filmed!' and all of a sudden I got appointments," said Holladay, now membership manager for WNKU-FM (89.7).

Fans of the movie still visit Pompilio's restaurant in Newport, Ky., and St. Anne Convent in Melbourne, Ky., where Hoffman and a young Tom Cruise shot memorable scenes in May 1988.

"They always ask where the table was where Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman sat," says former owner Frank Mazzei.

A few feet away, on the barroom tile floor, was where Hoffman's character – autistic Raymond Babbitt – counted 246 toothpicks as soon as they hit the floor to the amazement of younger brother Charlie (Cruise).

A bonding experience

Charlie, a Los Angeles-based hustler estranged from his rich Cincinnati father, didn't know he had an autistic brother until their dad died. The movie portrays the brothers bonding on a road trip from Cincinnati to Las Vegas and Los Angeles in their father's 1949 Buick Roadmaster convertible.

Charlie found Raymond at the "Wallbrook" institution, which is actually the Sisters of Divine Providence's 1919 St. Anne Convent, about 10 miles up the Ohio River from Newport.

Most of the place remains the same today – except for the driveway's pin oak canopy under which Hoffman and Cruise walked for the iconic Rain Man movie poster. The dying and diseased trees were removed in 2008. A few old oaks still tower above the front steps and driveway.

"We weren't allowed to go outside when they were shooting. Everything was closed off," recalled Sister Emerita McGann, who lives in a newer convent next door.

Hoffman, 51 at the time, stayed in character until filming finished, she said. "He was the friendliest person. He took time for everyone," Sister Emerita said.

Cruise, who was 26 at the time, was "more reserved and shy," she said.

Director Barry Levinson, who won an Oscar for the movie, filmed the first week at the convent before shooting at Pompilio's and, among other places, Roger and Janet Ach's large Tudor home in East Walnut Hills, Ohio.

Cruise 'absolutely delightful'

"Tom Cruise was absolutely delightful. He was really sweet to our kids," Janet Ach said. Three of her four children were at home: Roger III (Chip) and twin sister Lela, 14, and Chris, 13.

Scenes were filmed inside and outside the front door, and in the dining room, attic and garage.

"They actually had three Buick convertibles, in case something happened to one," Janet Ach said.

Producers used some movie magic with Rain Man :

-- To the disappointment of movie fans who requested the Vernon Manor Hotel's Rain Man suite, Hoffman and Cruise filmed their hotel room scenes on a set inside local WCET-TV. The hotel closed in 2009.

Vernon Manor exteriors were seen because Levinson's production offices were there. Cruise stayed at the Cincinnatian, downtown, where his wife at the time, actress Mimi Rogers, "would come down to the kitchen in Tom's pajamas to make him breakfast," Holladay said.

-- Cincinnati Opera stage hands taught Rain Man producers how to move disappearing "fly away" walls silently at WCET, Holladay said. "If you watch the camera movements when Tom Cruise starts fighting with his girlfriend (Valeria Golino), and the camera follows them closely around the suite, into the bathroom and back out, the walls disappear."

-- Few knew that Hoffman and Cruise returned to the convent nearly two months later, after completing filming in late June, to reshoot their first scenes together.

Hoffman, a perfectionist, told movie critics shortly before the movie opened in December 1988 that he didn't "find" the character until shooting the road-trip scene in which Raymond babbled obsessively about Hanes boxer shorts "from K-Mart, 400 Oak Street."

"For the first few weeks (in Cincinnati), I just wanted to die. I was ready to quit the picture… I just couldn't do it," said Hoffman, who was coming off Ishtar (1987), a box-office flop.

"I suddenly realized that Raymond's obsessiveness was something I was comfortable with. I can connect with obsession. And so I started going in another direction. (In each scene) I started asking: What is he fixed on?"

Chicago was original choice

Had Levinson stuck with the original script, the film would have been shot in Chicago, Holladay said.

In early 1988, Holladay and two Ohio Film Bureau executives were in Los Angeles waiting to see producer Mark Johnson (Levinson's partner in Good Morning Vietnam, Diner and The Natural ) when he got approval to make Rain Man .

"He said, 'Cincinnati works logistically, because they have to make a cross-country trip,' " said Holladay.

She quickly returned home to take snapshots of possible locations for a sanitarium, restaurant and home. Levinson liked her first choices: Stately St. Anne convent, which she would pass as a kid on Sunday drives with her family, and Pompilio's.

Rain Man proved to be a great rainmaker. Within a year, Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell and Teri Hatcher were in Cincinnati making Tango & Cash and Tom Selleck was starring in An Innocent Man .

A Rage in Harlem, Little Man Tate, City of Hope (all 1990), Lost In Yonkers, The Public Eye (1991) Milk Money and Airborne (1993) quickly followed.

In recent years, Ohio film-making incentives have lured Hollywood back to shoot The Ides of March , Marvel's The Avengers and Emilio Estevez's Johnny Longshot .

"It's been a joy," said Pompilio's Mazzei. "It's the kind of publicity you couldn't plan for, and certainly couldn't afford, if you had to pay for it."

Tom Cruise

  • Born July 3 , 1962 · Syracuse, New York, USA
  • Birth name Thomas Cruise Mapother IV
  • Height 5′ 7″ (1.70 m)
  • In 1976, if you had told fourteen-year-old Franciscan seminary student Thomas Cruise Mapother IV that one day in the not too distant future he would be Tom Cruise, one of the top 100 movie stars of all time, he would have probably grinned and told you that his ambition was to join the priesthood. Nonetheless, this sensitive, deeply religious youngster who was born in 1962 in Syracuse, New York, was destined to become one of the highest paid and most sought after actors in screen history. Tom is the only son (among four children) of nomadic parents, Mary Lee (Pfeiffer), a special education teacher, and Thomas Cruise Mapother III, an electrical engineer. His parents were both from Louisville, Kentucky, and he has German, Irish, and English ancestry. Young Tom spent his boyhood always on the move, and by the time he was 14 he had attended 15 different schools in the U.S. and Canada. He finally settled in Glen Ridge, New Jersey with his mother and her new husband. While in high school, Tom wanted to become a priest but pretty soon he developed an interest in acting and abandoned his plans of becoming a priest, dropped out of school, and at age 18 headed for New York and a possible acting career. The next 15 years of his life are the stuff of legends. He made his film debut with a small part in Endless Love (1981) and from the outset exhibited an undeniable box office appeal to both male and female audiences. With handsome movie star looks and a charismatic smile, within 5 years Tom Cruise was starring in some of the top-grossing films of the 1980s including Top Gun (1986) ; The Color of Money (1986) , Rain Man (1988) and Born on the Fourth of July (1989) . By the 1990s he was one of the highest-paid actors in the world earning an average 15 million dollars a picture in such blockbuster hits as Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994) , Mission: Impossible (1996) and Jerry Maguire (1996) , for which he received an Academy Award Nomination for best actor. Tom Cruise's biggest franchise, Mission Impossible, has also earned a total of 3 billion dollars worldwide. Tom Cruise has also shown lots of interest in producing, with his biggest producer credits being the Mission Impossible franchise. In 1990 he renounced his devout Catholic beliefs and embraced The Church of Scientology claiming that Scientology teachings had cured him of the dyslexia that had plagued him all of his life. A kind and thoughtful man well known for his compassion and generosity, Tom Cruise is one of the best liked members of the movie community. He was married to actress Nicole Kidman until 2001. Let’s Take a Peek Inside Tom Cruise’s Property Portfolio

At long last, “Top Gun: Maverick” is set to land in theaters at the end of May. A-lister Tom Cruise will step back into the cockpit and reprise his role as test pilot Maverick.

Now 59, the seemingly ageless performer has been box-office gold since the 1980s. His hits include “Cocktail,” “Jerry McGuire,” and “A Few Good Men.” The father of three also starred in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, the latest of which is the upcoming “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning.”

With the superstar set to take off on the big screen, we thought we’d take a spin through the actor’s real estate.

Along with starring in blockbusters over the decades, the “Mission: Impossible” star has been busy when it comes to pricey real estate. In many cases, the paparazzi-averse Cruise tends to buy up multiple lots in extremely private locales.

So don your aviators, and let’s head into the “property zone.”

Clearwater condos

The star’s latest “mission”: a move to a giant spread in Clearwater, FL . He dropped $9,580,500 on a 20,826-square-foot, two-level penthouse in 2017. It’s located in the Skyview tower , which was reportedly altered to accommodate Cruise, according to the Tampa Bay Times .

The actor’s lavish living quarters include four bedrooms, a gym, game room, home theater, roof deck with an infinity pool, hot tub, gardens, and a bar, according to the Times.

The penthouse boasts a private garage with a car elevator on the second floor. That level also apparently includes a flight simulator. (Perhaps Cruise could get in some practice for his “Top Gun” role?) There’s also office space and a sports storage area.

Cruise paid an additional $1,475,000 for three more condos in the Clearwater high-rise, perhaps for staff or relatives.

The building, developed by fellow Scientologist Moises Agami , is located just blocks from the Church of Scientology headquarters. Cruise has been a member of the church since 1986.

Terrific in Telluride

More recently, the “Risky Business” actor took care of a piece of business in the Rocky Mountain region. He sold his longtime Telluride, CO, ranch for a whopping $39.5 million.

Cruise had held on to the 320-acre mountain retreat for decades, before trying to quietly sell it for $59 million in 2014. It was relisted in March 2021 for $39.5 million and quickly sold.

Cruise spent years amassing the land, then built a 10,000-square-foot, seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom home in 1994.

The picturesque home was the setting for a photo shoot with Vanity Fair magazine featuring his daughter Suri  with his then-wife Katie Holmes . Oprah Winfrey also interviewed Cruise at the home in 2008.

The main house includes a chef’s kitchen, fitness center, rec room, den, office suite, two fireplaces, and multiple terraces. There’s also a three-bedroom guest lodge.

Though secluded, the retreat is just minutes to Telluride and a two-hour private jet flight from L.A.

Watch: Mark Wahlberg Wants How Much for His Beverly Hills Mansion?!

Lavish in Los Angeles

Before decamping to the Sunshine State, the busy actor let go of his holdings in La-La land.

In 2016, Cruise sold the Beverly Hills compound he had shared with  Holmes . The 1.2-acre spread changed hands for a startling $38 million. He had paid $30.5 million in 2007.

The compound included a 10,000-square-foot mansion with seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms, a tennis court, a swimming pool, and a pair of guesthouses.

That sale came almost a year after he sold his Hollywood Hills compound to  Eva Longoria for $11.4 million.

Initially listed for $13 million, that property featured two adjoining houses built in 2005 on an ultraprivate 2.75-acre lot. The compound consists of a three-bedroom French villa, a four-bedroom guesthouse, two standalone studios, and a quaint stone cottage.

Beverly Hills rental home with Holmes

Cruise and Holmes leased a mansion in the 90210 for $55,000 a month from 2001 through 2008.

Last offered for lease for $100,000 a month in 2016, the three-acre estate includes a nine-bedroom main house, a guesthouse, a pool with a spa, and a tennis court.

Crash pad in New York City

Cruise sold his longtime East Village loft in the American Felt Building for $3 million in 2013. He had picked up the pied-à-terre in 1984, following his starring role in “Risky Business.”

The two-bedroom, 2,200-square-foot unit is said to contain a state-of-the-art gym. It’s located on the 10th floor of the 12-floor building.

Cruise reportedly shared the condo with all three of his ex-wives, including Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman . The building housed other notable residents, including author Bret Easton Ellis and the Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti , the Real Deal reported at the time of the sale. Cruise’s loft was sold in an off-market deal.

Rain Man | 1988

Rain Man location: Sunset Plaza Drive, West Hollywood, Los Angeles

The Oscar-grabbing movie travelled all over the US, but was based in Cincinnati , Ohio , for four weeks, and made use of locations in Indiana and Kentucky .

On hearing of his father’s death, hard-hearted businessman Charlie Babbitt ( Tom Cruise ) travels from Los Angeles , where his business operates out of the docks of San Pedro , to Cincinnati .

Charlie’s childhood home is the Tudor-style mansion at 2 Beech Crest Lane , off Madison Road in Cincinnati ’s East Walnut Hills district, on the Ohio River’s northern shore, northeast of downtown.

The ‘Cincinnati Trust’, where Charlie charms the desk clerk to divulge the whereabouts of the $3 million trust fund, is the lobby of the Dixie Terminal, 120 East Fourth Street at Walnut Street, downtown Cincinnati . The  Dixie Terminal Buildings were completed in 1921 as a combined streetcar terminal, stock exchange and office space for the city's business district. After streetcars were discontinued in the 1950s, the terminal continued to be used for bus services, until 1998 when these too ceased. The complex still houses shops and offices – and its elaborate marble arcade is open to the public.

If ‘Wallbrook’, the home where he finds brother Raymond, looks a bit religiose, with statues of the virgin in the walls, that’s because it’s St Anne’s Convent, 1000 Saint Anne Drive, Melbourne , just to the southeast of Cincinnati over the Ohio River on Route 8, Kentucky . Built 1919 by architect Howard McClorey, it now houses a Montessori school.

Charlie’s father’s funeral was filmed at Evergreen Cemetery, 25 Alexandria Pike, Southgate , just south of Newport , also in Kentucky .

The bridge Charlie and Raymond cross leaving town is the John A Roebling Suspension Bridge , a prototype for the designer’s later Brooklyn Bridge in New York (you can see it from the window of the Dixie Terminal Building ).

Rain Man location: Vernon Manor Hotel, Oak Street, Newport

The first night away from ‘Wallbrook’ is spent at the Vernon Manor Hotel, 400 Oak Street , Cincinnati , a 1924 landmark in the historic uptown district, loosely modelled on much-used movie location Hatfield House, Hertfordshire , in the UK. Unfortunately, the hotel finally closed its doors in March 2009.

Rain Man location: Pompilio's, Washington Avenue, Newport

And it’s back to Newport for the café where Raymond reveals his numerical skills by remembering the waitress’s phone number and counting scattered toothpicks. It’s Pompilio’s Bar and Restaurant , 600 Washington Avenue . A southern Italian restaurant, built in 1933, Pompilio’s was granted one of the US’s first post-Prohibition liquor licences.

Serving Cincinnati , though across the border in Kentucky , it’s off to Greater Cincinnati International Airport , where Raymond quotes a few useful statistics, decides that road travel is preferable and the two take the highway, I-275 , which happens to be the ring road around Cincinnati .

Rain Man location: DeLuxe Inn, El Reno, Oklahoma

The film’s crew was based in Oklahoma City for the cross-States journey. The motel in ‘Amarillo, Texas’, where Charlie realises that Raymond was his imaginary friend, ‘the Rain Man’, was the Big 8$ Motel, 1705 East 66th Highway, El Reno , on I-40 about 15 miles west of Oklahoma City . It later became the DeLuxe Inn, but has since been demolished.

The sign, ‘Amarillo’s Finest’, was added for the movie, and, much to the confusion of passing motorists, was retained as a feature of the motel. The brothers’ room was 117.

Rain Man location: DeLuxe Inn, El Reno

The gas station, where the pair stops to make a phone call, is a disused, and now once again dilapidated W.S. Kelly Gas Station and Store , at Cogar , Caddo County , Oklahoma , about ten miles south of El Reno over the South Canadian River.

Twenty miles west of El Reno , south of I-40, is the town of Hinton , where Raymond gets to watch Judge Wapner on the farmhouse TV. Way up about twenty miles north of Oklahoma City , on I-35, is the town of Guthrie , where Charlie takes Raymond to see the doctor at the Guthrie Clinic , on the corner of Oklahoma Street and Division Street .

Rain Man location: Caesar's Palace, las Vegas

More road filming took place in south Nevada , en route to Las Vegas . Raymond demonstrates his skill with cards and Charlie teaches him to dance in Caesars Palace , 3570 South Las Vegas Boulevard . The complex has been enlarged since filming. The foursome from Todd Phillips 's 2009 hit The Hangover follow in their footsteps.

Back to Los Angeles , and Susanna ( Valerie Golino ) is dropped off at her apartment, Ocean View Apartments, 1435 South Beacon Street in San Pedro .

Rain Man location: Westin Bonaventure, South Figueroa, downtown Los Angeles

Charlie, reborn as a caring brother, turns down a $250,000 offer from Dr Bruner poolside in the Westin Bonaventure Hotel , 404 South Figueroa Street , downtown. Its cylindrical glass towers can also be seen in This Is Spinal Tap , True Lies , In The Line of Fire , Jim McBride ’s 1983 remake of Breathless (with Richard Gere ), Strange Days and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century . Its interior even became the NASA facility for Christopher Nolan 's Interstellar .

Charlie's LA home is (the rear of) 1599 Sunset Plaza Drive in West Hoillywood .

He takes Raymond for pancakes at the Pink Cadillac Cafe (you can’t do the same – the pancake house is now Blue Bamboo, 359 North La Cienega Boulevard , serving up Asian fusion fare), before battling it out with the medical profession (a cameo from director Barry Levinson ) for custody of Raymond.

Rain Man location: Wattles Mansion, Hollywood, Los Angeles

The meeting takes place in the Wattles Mansion , 1824 North Curson Avenue on the south end of Runyon Canyon Park in Hollywood , a 1905 house and gardens built as the winter residence of an Omaha businessman.

Charlie finally sees Raymond off back to ‘Wallbrook’ at Santa Ana Train Station, 2800 North Main Street, Santa Ana , southeast of Los Angeles .

Where Did Tom Cruise Grow Up?

Though he would eventually become one of the biggest movie stars in history, Tom Cruise had a complicated and busy life long before he was a big-screen superstar. He grew up in multiple locations and never called just one city his home.

Tom Cruise was born in the city of Syracuse, New York on July 3, 1962. Cruise grew up in different cities across North America. After his childhood in New York, Cruise and his family moved to Canada then eventually back to the U.S. in various cities.

Cruise’s journey through his youth was winding and often troubled but it eventually led to the fame and fortune that made him a Hollywood legend.

Cruise’s Early Years

Thomas Cruise Mapother IV was the son of Mary Lee, a special education teacher, and Thomas Cruise Mapother III, an electrical engineer. Born in Syracuse, New York, Cruise was just one of four children; he has three sisters named Lee Anne, Cass, and Marian.

Aside from his sisters, Cruise also has a cousin, William Mapother . William is an accomplished actor who has appeared in Lost , In the Bedroom, and other projects.

How Tall Is Tom Cruise? Exact Height Revealed

What is tom cruise’s daily routine, where does tom cruise live.

Growing up, Cruise’s family didn’t have it easy and the actor has stated that they lived in near-poverty for much of his youth.

His home life was also hard because of his abusive dad. The actor has repeatedly referred to his late father as a “bully” and “coward.” Their relationship was incredibly strained right from the beginning.

Because of his low income and constant relocating, Cruise was frequently bullied as a kid. The actor has said he grew up without friends and was ridiculed for everything from his choice of shoes to his accent.

His father took a job as a defense consultant with the Canadian Armed Forces in 1971 so nine-year-old Cruise and his sisters and mother moved to Beacon Hill, Ottawa. He attended Robert Hopkins Public School for elementary school and it was in fourth grade that he first became involved in theater, thanks to his drama teacher George Steinburg.

Cruise attended several other schools in Canada around that age, including Henry Munro Middle school in Ottawa. His interest in acting continued to grow throughout this time in his life.

Cruise was also becoming a budding athlete at that young age and excelled at floor hockey. Sadly, during a hockey game Cruise fell hard and chipped a front tooth, something that is quite noticeable in early photos of the star.

Return to the U.S.

In 1974, when Tom was in sixth grade, his mother Mary Lee left his father and took Tom and his sisters back to the United States. It was there she would remarry after meeting Cruise’s stepfather Jack South.

Tom would have little-to-no contact with his dad until his death years later.

After his mother remarried, Cruise’s family wound up moving around America a lot without ever fully settling. His family lived in various locations, including his mother’s home state of Kentucky . All told, Tom was enrolled in 15 schools during this time in his life.

Eventually, Cruise planted roots in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he received a church scholarship and attended a seminary school while briefly considering a career as a priest. He left Ohio, however, and his family traveled to the east coast.

Tom ended his schooling career in Glen Ridge, New Jersey where he graduated from Glen Ridge High School.

As Tom graduated from high school, his interest in acting had blossomed even more. His final years saw him starring in multiple high school productions including Guys and Dolls .

Growing Up and Moving On

After high school, Cruise was intent on pursuing his career in acting. At the young age of 18, he moved from his family in New Jersey and started his acting quest across the river in New York .

Cruise worked hard to achieve his goals and would soon relocate across the country to Los Angeles where he secured an agent and began to land bit parts. In just a few short years, Cruise went from small roles in films like Endless Love to career-making turns in Risky Business and All the Right Moves.

After that, Tom Cruise’s career skyrocketed to heights that few have reached. From Mission: Impossible to Top Gun and War of the Worlds , Cruise is certifiably one of the largest names in Hollywood history.

Tom Cruise Was Almost a Catholic Priest, Until He Got Kicked Out of Seminary

The Editors

He could have been fighting real bad guys instead of pretending to fight them in movies!

Tom Cruise is a super famous movie star ( Mission Impossible , Top Gun , et al.), recognizable around the world. He’s also one of the most visible advocates for Scientology .

But his life almost turned out very differently: as a young man, he was a devout Catholic, attended a Catholic seminary, and was on track to become a priest –  until he got kicked out.

Born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV in New York, Cruise’s family was Catholic, but his father was abusive. In elementary school his family moved to Canada for his father’s work, but in middle school his mother left his abusive father and took Cruise and his three sisters back to the United States.

As a teenager, he met Fr. Ric Schneider, who persuaded him to enter St. Francis Seminary School in Cincinnati, OH.

“Tom was instantly hooked,” the priest later said . And though the priest said he thought Cruise was lured by the chance at a free education, one of Cruise’s best friends at the time, Shane Dempler, says Cruise was serious about the priesthood.

“He had a very strong Catholic faith,” Dempler recalls . “We went to Mass, spent time in the chapel and enjoyed hearing stories from the priests. We thought the priests had a great lifestyle and we were really interested in priesthood.”

They almost didn’t let Cruise in. The school had an IQ cut-off of 110, and he got exactly that score on their test. Though Cruise never did well in school, he excelled at sports and joined their drama club.

But then it all came to an end. Cruise and Dempler, Dempler says, started to break the rules. For one, they would regularly sneak out and smoke cigarettes.

But what really got them in trouble was much bigger: Dempler and Cruise decided to steal some liquor from the private rooms of the Franciscans. Dempler snuck into the room, found the liquor, and tossed several bottles out the window to Cruise down below. Most of the bottles broke, but they managed to secure a few. Word spread among the other seminarians, and soon a big group of them were in the woods drinking the hard liquor. A few of them were later found drunk by the Franciscans, and they confessed where they had gotten the liquor.

“The school wrote a letter to our parents saying they liked us both, but would prefer if we didn’t return,” Dempler explains . “So we weren’t kicked out, just preferred not to go.”

So Cruise left seminary, and with it any plans to become a priest. He decided to try his hand at acting instead, and 5 years later, just before turning 20, he got his breakout role in the movie Taps . Soon after that came Risky Business , then Top Gun , and the rest is cinematic history.

Unfortunately, he didn’t keep his once-devout Catholic faith in the process. After hitting it big, his first (of unfortunately several) wives introduced him to Scientology – and he fully embraced it . Since the early 1990s, he has been deeply involved, raising huge sums of money for the organization and publicly advocating for it.

Many people who were once devout Catholics can find that they can’t really ever get away from it. So who knows if he may ever return.

So say a prayer for Tom Cruise!

Tragic Real-Life Details About Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise smiling with teeth exposed

Tom Cruise is known for his perky personality and general likeability, both of which have helped him sustain a successful Hollywood career for more than four decades now. His guy-next-door image is so strong that Cruise has been able to blow through some truly controversial moments, like that Oprah interview where he jumped on a couch or his rant against Brooke Shields and psychiatry, rather easily. His dominance at the box office is matched only by his star quality, and Cruise is nothing short of a screen legend. Though he often maintains a shiny veneer, there is much pain behind Cruise's iconic one-front-tooth smile. His past has included a number of tragic elements, beginning with a chaotic childhood filled with abuse and struggle.

Cruise's screen career began with 1981's "Endless Love," and it did not take him long to become a household name. His "Risky Business" dancing scene sure helped, as did his roles in huge hits like "Top Gun," "Born on the Fourth of July," and "Rain Man." Cruise continued to dazzle throughout the 1990s and 2000s, both in critically lauded movies like "Magnolia" and "Jerry Maguire," as well as action flicks like "Minority Report." Then there is the juggernaut "Mission Impossible" franchise, which is a big reason why Cruise's films have had more than $10 billion in box office earnings. Despite his continued success, Cruise's personal life has weathered many storms, and even mega-stars like Cruise face the occasional professional setback. Here are some tragic real-life details about Tom Cruise.

He was physically and verbally abused by his father

Tom Cruise (or Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, as his birth certificate reads) was born in Syracuse, New York, in 1962. His father, Thomas, was an electrical engineer, while his mother, Mary, was a schoolteacher and aspiring actor. Like far too many Americans, Cruise's home did not provide the actor with the safe space that all kids deserve. His earliest years were spent dealing with verbal and physical abuse at the hands of his father, whom Cruise called both "a bully and a coward" and a "merchant of chaos" in a 2006 interview with Parade . "He was the kind of person where, if something goes wrong, they kick you. It was a great lesson in my life — how he'd lull you in, make you feel safe and then, bang!," he said in the interview. "For me, it was like, 'There's something wrong with this guy. Don't trust him. Be careful around him.' There's that anxiety."

Cruise has not given many specifics about his abuse, but he did confirm that things were sometimes physical in a 2013 Vanity Fair article. "As a kid, I had a lot of hidden anger about that. I'd get hit, and I didn't understand it," he said. Though Cruise was the only family member who was hit, it is not entirely clear if he was the only one who faced verbal abuse. After his mother divorced his father, Cruise remained estranged from his dad for a decade. At 22, they reconnected as the elder was dying of cancer.

His family was extremely poor, and he went to 15 schools in 12 years

Tom Cruise's early life was filled with uncertainty and chaos, and not just because of his father's abusive ways. The Mapother family was extremely poor, and they moved around all the time. Even before his parents' divorce, Cruise's father kept them moving due to his inability to keep a job and his near-constant search for work. Then, after Cruise's mother left her husband, she moved her kids to Louisville, Kentucky, in search of a better life. Both of the star's parents originally hail from Louisville, but they were living in Ottawa, Canada, when the divorce occurred. Cruise later landed in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, after his mother's 1978 remarriage when he was 16. It was there that he finished high school.

Cruise's mother worked three jobs to support her kids — Cruise and his sisters Lee Ann, Cass, and Marian — and did her best to give them a good life. "People can create their own lives, I saw how my mother created hers and so made it possible for us to survive," he told Parade. "She said, 'We're going to get through this.'" Because of all of the moving around, Cruise attended 15 schools over the course of 12 years. This included a Catholic seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio, where Cruise spent a year at age 14 before his desire to join the priesthood waned. Shortly thereafter, a lead role in a school production of "Guys and Dolls" sparked Cruise's desire to be in the movies.

He was bullied by other kids for a variety of reasons

It is always hard to envision Hollywood's biggest stars as anything less than cool, but Tom Cruise has said he was ostracized and ridiculed by his peers as a youngster. There were a multitude of factors positioning him as an outsider at school, starting with the fact that he was consistently the new kid in class. Cruise also could not read, and being placed in remedial classes further isolated him. Moreover, he was too small and too eager for the other kids. "So many times the big bully comes up, pushes me," he told Parade. "Your heart's pounding, you sweat, and you feel like you're going to vomit. I'm not the biggest guy, I never liked hitting someone, but I know if I don't hit that guy hard he's going to pick on me all year."

The scars of childhood bullying often last a lifetime, and perhaps not coincidentally, there have been reports that Cruise can be somewhat of a bully himself. For instance, Leah Remini accused him of shouting at assistants in her memoir, and everyone has heard that 2020 outburst in which he was caught on an audio recording aggressively yelling at his crew over COVID-19 protocols. Furthermore, Cruise's first manager, Eileen Berlin, has claimed he has a "terrible temper" and accused him of throwing an album at her face. "There's contempt, arrogance, frustration, charm, sadness. I saw him in all those moods. What I have never seen is a real display of happiness in Tommy," she told The Daily Mail .

His dyslexia diagnosis caused him a lot of pain

According to the Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity , dyslexia refers to "an unexpected difficulty in reading for an individual who has the intelligence to be a much better reader," and it occurs due to issues with phonological processing. Given that an estimated 20% of the population has dyslexia, it is no surprise that a fair number of celebrities have been open about how the learning disorder has impacted their lives. This list includes Cher, Stephen Spielberg, Octavia Spencer, Anderson Cooper, and many others, but one of the first big-name stars to open the door to talking about dyslexia was none other than Tom Cruise. Cruise's dyslexia was a massive factor in his early life, contributing to his feelings of self-worth and isolating him from his peers.

Cruise was diagnosed with dyslexia when he was seven, but the diagnosis did not bring him much comfort. "The school took me to a psychiatrist to get tested," he told Parade. "They said, 'Oh, he's dyslexic.' I'm labeled. It instantly put me into confusion. It was an absolute affront to my dignity." Cruise said he struggled to find normalcy after the diagnosis, which is what led him to study psychiatry — which later led to his feud with Brooke Shields over anti-depressants and his infamous 2005 interview with Matt Lauer, in which he went on an anti-psychiatry stance. Cruise's stance is, of course, informed by his membership in the church of Scientology, which he has credited with helping him to overcome dyslexia through their "study technology" technique.

He has three divorces under his belt and one union didn't even make three years

Tom Cruise is good at a lot of things — acting, producing, smiling — but marriage does not seem to be one of them. In fact, he appears to be downright bad at making relationships work, and because he is so famous, fans have had a front-row seat for every romantic failure. Cruise's girlfriends have included Rebecca De Mornay, Penelope Cruz, and Cher, but it is his three wives that we want to highlight. The actor first got married in May 1987, when he was 24 and his bride, Mimi Rogers, was 32. Rogers soon found herself enveloped in Cruise's fast-growing celebrity — "You cease to be an individual," she later told People — but she did not need to worry about it for long. Cruise filed for divorce in December 1989, and the marriage was officially dissolved the following February.

In a 1993 Playboy interview, Rogers claimed her marriage ended because Cruise wanted to be a monk. "At least for that period of time, it looked as though marriage wouldn't fit into his overall spiritual need. And he thought he had to be celibate to maintain the purity of his instrument," she said (via E! Online ). That idea quickly fizzled, since Cruise met his next wife, Nicole Kidman, on the set of "Days of Thunder" only days after his split. He reportedly proposed as soon as the divorce was finalized, and the pair were married on Christmas Eve in 1990. Cruise filed for divorce in February 2001 and went on to have a third failed marriage with Katie Holmes, which lasted from 2006 to 2012.

Anne Rice humiliatingly bashed his casting in Interview With the Vampire

It is a necessity that a celebrity of Tom Cruise's magnitude has thick skin, and Cruise has certainly been the butt of more than a few jokes over the course of his career (especially after jumping on Oprah Winfrey's couch). The actor has also faced a lot of criticism, for everything from his religion to his parenting to his exuberance. Even Cruise's appearance has at times been ripped apart, especially his smile, despite the fact that he is widely regarded as a conventionally attractive male. For instance, the Internet had a field day when Cruise was photographed at a baseball game with a mysteriously puffy face in 2021. It quickly went back to normal, but not until after the peanut gallery got their say on social media.

Though critique or ridicule from keyboard warriors is one thing, it is an entirely different ballgame when it is another celebrity doing the bashing. This is especially true if said celebrity is the author of the source material you are set to bring to life, which is what happened to Cruise when author Anne Rice got wind of his casting in the 1994 film adaptation of her novel " Interview With the Vampire ." Not only did Rice denigrate Cruise's casting in a Los Angeles Times article, but she continuously complained to crowds of fans about how Cruise "butchered" her script by removing content to fit his clean-cut image. "When it first hit, it really hurt my feelings, to be candid about it," Cruise told Esquire . "Her venom hurt."

He and Nicole Kidman lost two babies during their marriage

Tom Cruise married Nicole Kidman in 1990, and the two remained married for over a decade, which is an eternity in show business circles. By the time the couple announced their split in February 2001, they were one of Hollywood's most visible power couples. Very few saw the divorce coming, including Kidman herself. "I thought our life together was perfect," she told DuJour . "It took me a very long time to heal. It was a shock to my system." Even though Cruise publicly announced that Kidman was aware of why he initiated a split, the public remains in the dark about what truly happened. The media had a field day, with rumors swirling about pretty much every aspect of the couple's life, including how their film "Eyes Wide Shut" may have impacted the marriage and whether one or both spouses cheated.

One of the most salacious stories concerned an alleged miscarriage, although there were conflicting reports regarding the timeline. Kidman set the record straight after some outlets claimed she had a miscarriage at age 23. "So it's huge news, and it didn't happen," Kidman told Marie Claire . "I had a miscarriage at the end of my marriage, but I had an ectopic pregnancy at the beginning of my marriage. It was incredibly traumatic for me. Sometimes you share your grief." Though the couple did eventually welcome two children to their family through adoption, the loss of two babies no doubt left permanent holes in both Cruise and Kidman's hearts.

He sued Bauer after their tabloids made hurtful false claims about him

Tom Cruise is a rather litigious fellow, especially when it comes to false claims made about him by the tabloids. He once sued a porn star for $100 million after the man, Chad Slater, claimed to have slept with Cruise and been the catalyst for the end of his second marriage. The court awarded him a judgment of $10 million, and that is only one of the multiple lawsuits Cruise has filed regarding rumors of his gay affairs. There have been limited gay rumors in the years since, but that has not stopped shady media outlets from publishing scandalous false or exaggerated reports. Never one to lay back and take it, Cruise went to war with German conglomerate Bauer Media after they made troubling claims regarding his youngest daughter, Suri .

Suri, born in April 2006, is Cruise's daughter with his third wife, Katie Holmes. After Cruise and Holmes split up in 2012, after six years of marriage, rumors swirled for years about Cruise's involvement (or lack thereof) in his young daughter's life. The actor took things to court after Bauer magazines InTouch and Life & Style both published stories alleging that Cruise "abandoned" his daughter after the divorce. Cruise asked for $50 million in damages in the defamation suit, and things got ugly on both sides (Bauer even tried to get Suri's mental health records). The parties ultimately settled in December 2013, although all terms were kept confidential except for the fact that both Cruise and the publisher covered their own legal fees.

He had a bitter 20-year feud with an uber-famous director (and many others)

Even though Tom Cruise has cultivated an everyman, guy-next-door persona, it remains unclear whether his nice guy image is true to his actual attitude and behavior. It was easy to buy into Cruise's "aw, shucks" vibe when he was younger, but as the years have progressed, more and more reports have come out to suggest that Cruise might not be exactly who he seems to be when in front of the camera. One look at Cruise's long list of feuds can make even die-hard fans start to question whether the star is the root of the problem. It does not help matters that many of the celebs with whom Cruise has had beef are not themselves prone to conflict.

Stars such as Mark Wahlberg, Lisa Marie Presley, and Alec Baldwin have all publicly critiqued Cruise, but not in so serious a way so as to create a full-blown feud. Still, the list of people with whom Cruise has ongoing conflict is quite long in itself, and it includes huge celebrities like Brad Pitt , John Travolta, and the Beckhams. There is also former scientologist Leah Remini, who went to war with Cruise upon leaving the church, as well as Paramount CEO Brian Robbins. One of Cruise's bitterest feuds — the one with famed director Steven Spielberg — lasted for a full two decades before the two buried the hatchet at an Oscar lunch in 2023. The conflict reportedly began because Spielberg was angered by Cruise's couch-jumping Oprah Winfrey interview and subsequent public denigration of Brooke Shields's use of antidepressants.

He was partially blamed for two tragic deaths during the making of American Made

Movies are meant to bring entertainment to fans, and though it is typically the stars, and a few select others, who get the credit, there are often hundreds of people involved in the construction of a feature film. Provided nothing awful happens on set, we rarely hear about people who work behind-the-scenes operating the cameras, mixing the audio, finding the props, or doing the makeup. We also rarely, if ever, hear about stunt doubles, despite the dominancy of action flicks at the box office and the widespread use of these professionals in Hollywood productions. Though Tom Cruise makes a habit of performing dangerous stunts himself, even he requires the use of stunt performers to make movie magic.

Cruise found himself embroiled in scandal after two pilots were killed and another injured while filming action scenes for the 2017 movie "American Made." The deaths occurred after a plane crashed in the Colombian Andes, where the film was shot in 2015, and multiple lawsuits were filed against producers (and others) in 2017. Cruise was not himself sued, but court documents obtained by People  made it clear that the families blamed both Cruise and director Doug Liman for cutting corners to save time and money. The families suggested that both put their desire for a "high-risk, action-packed motion picture" above the well-being of the pilots and adherence to safety protocols. They also noted that Cruise himself is a skilled pilot who could have done some of the shots rather than add hours to the stunt performers' schedules each day.

He has gotten really embarrassed over public rejection from other stars

For someone in a career that, by its very nature, includes a lot of rejection, Tom Cruise sure does not take it very well. Then again, it has probably been a very long time since Cruise has had to audition, and since he is such a bankable star, his professional life likely includes very little repudiation. On the personal front, however, Cruise does not always get his way — and personal rejections that happen on a world stage cause him what seem to be extreme amounts of embarrassment. When you are not used to your advances being rebuffed, even the smallest slight can seem like a big deal, which might be why Cruise was reportedly so mortified when Kate Middleton refused his help at the U.K. premiere of "Top Gun: Maverick."

While the princess initially accepted Cruise's hand to walk up the stairs, once she made it up the first flight, she switched her purse to avoid Cruise's aid for the second flight. The moment was captured on video, went viral via TikTok, and allegedly caused Cruise much distress. It is not the only public rejection that has sent Cruise into a tailspin, either. After he unsuccessfully attempted to pursue a romance with singer Shakira, news outlets reported that Cruise was extremely upset by the slight. "It was a huge dent to Tom's ego," an inside source told OK! Magazine , which also reported that Shakira had to "beg" Cruise to stop pursuing her (a quote which could not have helped his embarrassment).

His insistence on doing stunts has led to many painful and serious injuries

There are certain actors who are identifiable primarily because of their presence in action and adventure movies. While Tom Cruise did not start out as one, he has over time shifted his career toward the genre. Cruise appeared in a few films that could loosely be classified as action, such as "Top Gun" and "Days of Thunder," but his first full foray into the genre occurred when he starred in 1996's "Mission: Impossible." Cruise is currently working on the eighth movie in the franchise that turned him into a bona fide action hero. Beyond playing Ethan Hunt, Cruise has also made two "Jack Reacher" films and many other one-off action flicks, such as "War of the Worlds," "Minority Report," and "Edge of Tomorrow."

Whether it is an apocalyptic adventure film like "Oblivion" or an action-comedy like "Knight and Day," the vast majority of Cruise's films now have some sort of action element. A known adrenaline junkie, it is clear that Cruise is especially attracted to films that allow him to do his own stunts, no matter how extreme. The star has spoken about having to convince others to let him tackle certain tasks and has at times put his life at risk in order to score the perfect shot. Among others, Cruise has torn a shoulder, cracked multiple ribs, and injured an ankle at least twice. But considering he has done things like ride a motorcycle off a cliff and hang off the side of an airplane, shattered ankles seem par for the course.

He has been targeted by more than one cruel death hoax

All big celebrities have been subject to rumors, but there are times when the rumor mill gets especially nasty, and death hoaxes fit squarely in the nasty pile. Though they rarely have any kernel of truth and are especially cruel, death hoaxes have become a staple of the Internet age. They can be quite elaborate as well, like the rumor that Russell Crowe fell 50 feet to his death from an Austrian mountain while filming a movie. Many others, including Cher, Jon Bon Jovi, and Johnny Knoxville, have been the subject of death hoaxes, but only a few have found themselves targeted time and time again. Tom Cruise has been falsely declared dead at least four times: in 2008, 2010, 2020, and 2023.

Unlike the 2016 hoax that suggested Cruise was moving back to his birthplace of Syracuse, New York, death rumors are not just playful gossip but problematic and mean lies that can be quite distressing. The first time Cruise was the subject of one was in 2008, when he supposedly fell off a cliff in New Zealand. Two years later, the rumor was that the star died in a plumbing accident. Cruise made light of it at the time, but probably did not think he'd be killed off by the Internet so regularly. The 2023 rumor was so undeveloped that it did not even have an attached cause of death, but the 2020 hoax claimed Cruise perished in an on-set accident, which sounds totally plausible and understandably had fans freaking out.

He wishes he never broke things off with Sofia Vergara

If you totally forgot that Tom Cruise once had a thing with Sofia Vergara, you are definitely forgiven. After all, the Columbian actor was still years away from being cast on "Modern Family" and was thus not super famous at the time. Plus, Cruise has had so many paramours that it can be hard to keep track. In addition to his longer-term relationships, the star has had brief dalliances with everyone from Melissa Gilbert to Cher. The reason Vergara is even a notable ex is because Cruise reportedly expressed an interest in rekindling the romance in August 2023, after Vergara's divorce from Joe Manganiello put her back on the market.

According to Andrew Morton's "Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography," Cruise and Vergara first dated in 2005, after the actor gave a list of potential mates to leaders at the Church of Scientology. The couple was reportedly then introduced by Will Smith, who invited Vergara to a pre-Oscars party with the intent of setting them up. It is unclear how long they were together, but there is only one instance where Vergara and Cruise were photographed in public, and they reportedly called it off because Vergara was unwilling to renounce Catholicism for Scientology. That seemingly hasn't stopped Cruise from pining after Vergara, as he reportedly began calling mutual friends as soon as she became single. ""If she bites, he's all set to pounce. He thinks she's exactly what has been missing from his life," an unnamed insider told OK! Magazine .

Tom Cruise Briefly Attended High School in Louisville

By KY for KY Store Admin | January 21, 2015

did tom cruise live in ohio

In the mid-to-late '70s, Tommy attended high school at St. Xavier, a private Catholic school nestled in a kind of confluence between a few of Louisville's East End neighborhoods. At that time, the city was locked in a kind of economic and demographic stasis, where the decades of white flight and so-called urban renewal stabilized the metropolitan population for years to come. Some theorize that this was simply a byproduct of young Tommy Mapother harnessing the city's energies, siphoning Louisville's untapped psychic reserves like a battery and transforming its power, bending it to his will.

Tom Cruise Boyhood

Before Tom Cruise climbed mountains and pretended to destroy aliens for a living, Tommy Mapother was just doing stuff. A nd he was doing this stuff in, of all places, Louisville, Kentucky. According to multiple biographical sources gleaned from the Internet in a great haste, the young Mapother moved to Louisville from Canada when he was a teenager where he ostensibly did normal Louisvillian things. While in school, the young Mapother reportedly excelled in athletics and theater, and was fascinated with theology, intending to pursue ecclesiastical studies at the St. Francis Seminary School in nearby Cincinnati. He was well on his righteous path, but as most endeavors undertaken by Kentuckians inevitably are, Mapother's pursuits were ruined in the pursuit of alcohol.

A March 4, 2013, New York Daily News article details Mapother's exploits with fellow seminarian Shane Dempler:

Tom Cruise Top Gun

Miraculously, beginning in the early-to-mid-eighties, Louisville began to slowly grow once more, having nursed the rising star to manhood. This is probably a coincidence, but as they teach police detectives, we don't believe in coincidences. Not today.

If anything, the city of Louisville can claim it was there that Cruise discovered two of his life's chief passions: Acting and religion. Both have catapulted him out of our state and into fame and fortune, resulting in some of America's most valuable cultural exports and at least one international human rights violation investigation. However, Cruise's Wikipedia page is, as of this writing, scrubbed of any mention of his Louisville residency despite multiple corroborating sources elsewhere on the Internet. (Efforts to reach out to his cousin, Louisvillian and actor William Mapother, were unsuccessful, leaving us woefully unsure if Tom Cruise ever puked in the infield during Oaks Day races at Churchill Downs.)

Logic dictates that, because Tom Cruise lived in Louisville, he lived in Kentucky, thus making him——however fleeting——a Kentuckian. It is an easy distinction to make, but not one rendered lightly. It may not be Berea, Hazard or even Newport, but dammit, Louisville's close enough.

But who knows what could have been? Perhaps, like Castro and his failed baseball ambitions, had the Franciscan friars let him get drunk on that fateful night, Tom Cruise might have remained Tommy Mapother, and the world might have been a different place… probably one with a lot more Eric Stolz.

The following are recommended topics, including some facts and many outright lies, to be used for conversational purposes in the event that the wearing of this shirt attracts social interest:

"Yeah, he lived in Louisville before commanding indentured servants aboard his personal watercraft within the larger Church of Scientology's ocean-faring Sea Org flotilla."

"I think he was a Cardinals fan."

"Well he wasn't a Scientologist when he lived in Kentucky, is all I'm saying."

"I know that Day-Lewis gets all the love for 'My Left Foot' and all, but Cruise was really screwed over by the Academy that year. His performance in 'Born on the Fourth of July' is incredible and really spoke to me on a personal level."

"No, you're thinking of Dustin Hoffman."

Tom Cruise smiles when asked about his hometown of Syracuse (video)

Syracuse native Tom Cruise smiles at the mention of his hometown -- even when he's on a marathon media blitz.

The "Edge of Tomorrow" star attended three premieres of his new film in three cities (in three countries) in one day last week. At an afterparty, Cruise signed autographs and posed for pictures with fans around 1 a.m. after the third movie screening in New York City.

Tom Cruise attends a special premiere of "Edge of Tomorrow" at the AMC Loews on Wednesday, May 28, 2014, in New York.

Videos show one exchange where the 51-year-old actor was asked about the recent passing of Maya Angelou and one man told Cruise he was also born in the Salt City.

"Oh, is that right?" Cruise responds with his movie star grin.

The three-time Oscar nominee, Hollywood's highest-paid actor in 2012, was born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV in Syracuse, N.Y. on July 3, 1962. His family moved around several times when he was a child, but his birthplace will always tie him to Central New York.

He remained at the NYC event until 3:30 a.m., wrapping up his 24-hour world tour that included stops in London and Paris.

" Edge of Tomorrow ," originally titled "All You Need Is Kill," stars Cruise as military PR man Maj. William Cage, who goes into battle against an alien invasion and dies -- but then comes back to live his final day over and over again in a futuristic, action-heavy twist on "Groundhog Day." Emily Blunt co-stars as a highly-trained Army soldier who helps Cage.

It's the latest blockbuster adventure for " our last real movie star ," whose credits include "Top Gun," "Mission: Impossible," "Jerry Maguire" and "Born on the Fourth of July." However, a new book titled "Tom Cruise: Anatomy of an Actor," claims the Internet and a certain couch-jumping incident hurt his star power more than scrutiny of his personal life, relationships and Scientology beliefs.

"Edge of Tomorrow" opens Friday, June 6.

How Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise's relationship with Tom Cruise will change once she turns 18

I t's a big week in the Holmes household, as Katie Holmes' daughter with her ex-husband Tom Cruise , Suri , is poised to turn 18 years old on April 18 , finally entering adulthood.

The actress, 45, and her teen daughter lead their lives away from the spotlight, while Tom, 61, has reportedly been estranged from his youngest for over a decade.

After their divorce in 2012, Katie was granted full custody of Suri, and Tom agreed as part of their settlement to pay $400,000 per year in child support to his ex-wife for Suri's upbringing.

However, that agreement lasts until Suri turns 18, and is set to expire this week, after 12 years of payments, which roughly equate to $33k a month in child support (Katie did not ask for spousal support in their divorce).

While it is reported that Tom might still pay for Suri's insurance bills, plus contribute to her college tuition (as one of the highest paid actors in the world), it seems like the end of his child support might just extinguish one of his last remaining links to his daughter.

Recent reports suggested that Katie was uncomfortable with the end of the payments, but her attorney Jonathan W. Wolfe, Esq., shut those rumors down with a statement to RadarOnline.com back in March by asserting that the actress and filmmaker would not be affected.

"The story is riddled with falsehoods," he shared. "One would hope there would be more newsworthy items to cover, and publications would avoid reporting as 'facts' claims from anonymous sources peddling such obvious misrepresentations."

Suri is also reportedly poised to be heading off to college this fall, with her Dawson's Creek star mom being heavily involved in the application process and supporting her big move every step of the way.

The 17-year-old may not be a huge fan of the spotlight , but she's taking after her famous parents when it comes to her creative abilities, having contributed to her mom's productions with her vocal stylings on multiple occasions, most recently 2023's Rare Objects , which was Katie's third directorial venture.

"I hope she always does something on my films," the proud mom gushed. "I always ask her. "So it comes out of love for me to include someone who I love dearly. That's how I like to work. I like to have that kind of feeling. It was very meaningful to me to have her there, because she's my heart."

She described being a mom to a teenage girl as wanting to "protect" her, adding: "What has been really important for me with my daughter, because she was so visible at a young age, is I really like to protect her. I'm very grateful to be a parent, to be her parent. She's an incredible person."

Entertainment | more than 20 previously uncounted ballots discovered during congressional district 16 recount, entertainment, entertainment | tom cruise’s daughter suri will soon be free to talk about their estrangement and scientology: report, with suri cruise turning 18 this week, she should be free to speak out about her father, his beliefs and their rift, a scientology expert says in a new report.

Tom Cruise’s three ex-wives, Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes, probably would have a lot to say about being married to the famously intense mega-star and their time inside his beloved Church of Scientology.

But these women have mostly kept Cruise’s secrets, with experts in the inner workings of Scientology saying that Kidman and Holmes, in particular, probably signed non-disclosure agreements when their marriages to the “Top Gun” actor ended.

But no such agreement probably applies to Cruise’s youngest child, Suri Cruise, from whom he’s long been estranged, Page Six reported . With Suri turning 18 on Thursday, she and her mother Katie Holmes should no longer receive the reported $400,000 a year Cruise paid as part of a divorce settlement. Cruise also agreed to pay Suri’s college and health care costs, Page Six added.

As an adult, Suri Cruise should be free to speak out about her father, his beliefs and their rift, journalist and Scientology expert Tony Ortega told Page Six.

“Suri would have been too young to sign any agreement (when her parents divorced in 2012), but she will now be free to talk if she wants to and it’s going to be really interesting if she has something to say,” Ortega said.

Page Six said that representatives for Cruise, Holmes and the Church of Scientology did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

It’s possible that Suri may choose to stay silent about her famous father. For one thing, if she gave an interview or published a tell-all about him, she’d probably have to give up the mostly private life she’s been able to enjoy thus far. People credit a protective Holmes with trying to give Suri as normal life as is possible under the circumstances, while raising her in New York City.

“Katie has safeguarded Suri and she’s a devoted mom,” a source told Page Six. “This is a girl who is a private citizen. She hasn’t lived her life in public.”

Suri’s life, though, started out in a very public way. As Page Six pointed out, she was once “the most famous baby in America” because of the very high-profile way that Cruise conducted his courtship of the “Dawson’s Creek” star, who was 16 years younger that Cruise when they began dating. When news came that Cruise and Holmes had become parents to a baby daughter in April 2006, a global frenzy erupted, with media outlets competing to be the first to publish the little girl’s photos.

At the age of five months, Suri Cruise made her debut on the cover of Vanity Fair, in a glossy photo taken by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz.

For the first six years of Suri’s life, Cruise seemed to dote on his youngest daughter and enjoy being seen with her in public. He also is the father of two older children, Isabella, now 31, and Connor Cruise, now 29, whom he adopted with Kidman.

But Suri’s relationship with her father changed after Holmes reportedly “blindsided” him by filing for divorce in 2012. The following year, Cruise gave a deposition in his $50 million court fight against a pair of tabloid magazines and admitted that Holmes filed for divorce “to protect Suri from Scientology,” court documents revealed, Page Six reported.

There have been questions about whether Holmes and her daughter were declared Scientology “suppressive persons,” or SPs, after the divorce. According to Scientology , SPs are people who have “anti-social” personalities who seek to “upset, continuously undermine, spread bad news about and denigrate betterment activities and groups.” Scientology recommends that members stay away from SPs for their own well-being, but the church’s own website said it is “extremely rare” to label someone an SP.

“We don’t know for sure if Katie was ever declared an SP,” Ortega told Page Six. A regular church member, whose wife and daughter left Scientology, would be encouraged to disconnect from them, but Cruise might have been spared that option because of his “top celebrity” status. “He gets to ignore all this stuff,” Ortega said.

In any case, Holmes secured sole custody of their daughter, while Cruise retained “meaningful” visitation rights, according to The Blast . Yet, public sightings of Cruise with his daughter soon dwindled, with Page Six saying they were last seen together at Disney World in the summer of 2012.

Even if Suri has lived a mostly private life, paparazzi are known to follow her and her mother Katie Holmes around the streets of Manhattan. Still, as Suri reportedly prepares to head off to college, Holmes revealed in a 2023 interview with Glamour that she has grown up to be “an incredible person.”
