Rory McIlroy penalized two strokes for improper drop at AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am
Bogey on par-5 seventh turns to triple bogey, signs for 1-under 71 at spyglass hill.
Change Text Size
Rory McIlroy was assessed a two-stroke penalty for an improper drop on the par-5 seventh hole at Spyglass Hill Golf Course, his 16th hole, during the opening round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
The penalty turned McIlroy’s bogey into a triple bogey. He signed for a 1-under 71, playing his final four holes in 5-over. In his first round of the 2024 PGA TOUR season, he led at 6-under through 10 holes; he ended the day in the middle of the pack.
After missing his tee shot left at No. 7, into thick grass under a pine tree, McIlroy considered chipping out before opting for relief. He took an unplayable lie, but then erred in dropping slightly to the right of his direct line. From 2019 until a Rules of Golf change in 2023, dropping within a club length of the direct line was allowed; now, a player is required to drop on the direct line. McIlroy was notified of the penalty in the scoring trailer; he accepted the penalty before signing his card.
“So I took an unplayable on 7 and I took it back on-line,” McIlroy said afterward. “Then unbeknownst to me, the rule changed in January 2023 where you used to be able to come back on-line, take a club length either side. That was changed in 2019 to be able to do that. I wasn't aware that that rule was changed again in 2023, so I took a drop thinking of the 2019 rules when everything was sort of changed, not knowing that the rule was changed again in 2023, so got a two-stroke penalty there.”
The penalty and wayward finish – playing his final four holes in 5-over – marred a promising start to the first round of McIlroy’s 2024 PGA TOUR season. After making the turn in 2-under, he took a wildly aggressive line at the dogleg-left, par-5 first hole, threading a gap between a line of trees and a singular, taller try that guarded the fairway. He shared a knowing, wry smile with group members after splitting the fairway, then proceeded to make birdie (his tee shot plugged in the fairway, but he received embedded ball relief.)
The world No. 2 added birdies at Nos. 3, 4 and 5 before running into trouble on his final four holes.
“When the rules changed in 2023, back-of-the-line relief, you still go back-of-the-line, in line with the flagstick, from where the ball is. However, you have to drop it on that line, and it can roll in any direction, even forward, one club length,” concurred Mark Dusbabek, Senior Director, Lead TV Rules & Video Analyst for the PGA TOUR. “Rory, from that line, dropped one club length to the side, which makes it a wrong place, and it will be a two-stroke penalty.
“Rory was met in scoring by our chief referee, Stephen Cox, and he totally owned the mistake, very professional about it, and admitted to the Rules mistake … It can drop on the line and roll up to a club length either direction; however, he took the club length off of the line and dropped it in that area, which he thought was a relief area, and it was correct there in 2019, but it changed in 2023.”
The silver lining for McIlroy: three more rounds, all at Pebble Beach Golf Links, in the no-cut Signature Event on the Monterey Peninsula.
The winning pro-am team will be crowned after 36 holes (each team playing one round at Pebble Beach and one round at Spyglass Hill); amateurs will not compete during the third and fourth rounds.

Another Super Bowl bet emerges: Can Taylor Swift make it from her Tokyo show in time?

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift celebrate after the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game at M&T Bank Stadium in Maryland on Sunday.
The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night, winning the AFC championship and securing a spot in the Super Bowl . They'll battle the San Francisco 49ers next month, hoping for a repeat of their 2020 victory .
The game is, as always, a big deal for fans of football, memorable TV commercials and elaborate halftime shows. And this year, another fandom is joining in full force: Swifties.
As has been well established, history-making global superstar Taylor Swift is dating history-making Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Her attendance at his games throughout the season has sent NFL ticket sales, TV ratings and Kelce jersey demand soaring , converted scores of new football fans and rankled some rivals along the way.
The Kansas City Chiefs will play the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl
Swift has been a visible presence on TV screens and social media memes all season, whether she's cheering Kelce on from his VIP box with an array of family members and celebrity friends, leaving Arrowhead Stadium hand-in-hand with him or simply enjoying a snack .

She was on the field to celebrate the Chiefs' win on Sunday, where her embrace of Kelce and interaction with coach Andy Reid made headlines of their own.
"Taylor Swift still managed to be one of the biggest storylines from that game despite not being on the field," Nora Princiotti, a staff writer at The Ringer (and a Swiftie) told NPR's All Things Considered .
Naturally, Swift fans were quick to wonder: Will she be in the stands at the Super Bowl too?
The answer is surprisingly complicated because Swift has stadiums of her own to fill.
A thanksgiving guest's guide to taylor swift and travis kelce.
Swift resumes the international leg of her record-breaking Eras Tour just days before the big game. She is scheduled to wrap up the last of four performances at the Tokyo Dome on Saturday, Feb. 10 — the night before the Super Bowl kicks off in Las Vegas, at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 pm PT.
Experts say the answer is theoretically yes. And it won't take a time machine, just a private jet. Luckily, Swift reportedly owns two .
"This is a typical international flight and the turnaround is not very tight," says Kevin O'Leary, the president and CEO of Jet Advisors , a Massachusetts-based aircraft acquisition, brokerage and research firm.
Warning: Things are about to get nerdy.
How exactly Swift can "Come Back ... Be Here"
Swift's show is scheduled to open at 6 p.m. local time and generally runs about three hours and 15 minutes. O'Leary — who is not a Swiftie but holds a PhD in aviation operations — predicts a punctual start.
He says Swift could feasibly fly out of either of Tokyo's main airports: Haneda, which is roughly a 30-minute drive from the Tokyo Dome but requires special permission, and Narita, which is about an hour's drive.
"There will be some logistics [and] clearances before the flight will be allowed to depart," O'Leary wrote. "With either airport the flight should be able to depart Japan within 2 hours of the end of [the] concert."
Deepfakes exploiting Taylor Swift images exemplify a scourge with little oversight
That puts her potential departure time around 11:30 Saturday night local time, or 6:30 Saturday morning Vegas time.
O'Leary's calculations also assume Swift would be flying in her Dassault Falcon 7X (which has a slightly longer range than her Dassault Falcon 900, according to The Athletic ). He says the jet should be able to fly the 4,821 nautical miles to Harry Reid International Airport (KLAS) in 10 to 12 hours.
There are always possible complications, from weather disruptions to the expected challenge of securing a landing slot at the airport, due to enhanced safety procedures in anticipation of high traffic that weekend.
It's Been a Minute
Real relationship aside, taylor swift and travis kelce are 100% in a pr relationship.
But if all goes according to plan, Swift would arrive in Vegas sometime between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. PT on Saturday, Feb. 10, thanks to the time change (see this decades-old West Wing clip for an eerily timely — no pun intended — explanation).
That would leave Swift with plenty of time to rest before the game, though O'Leary says she could do so on the plane.
"The aircraft would typically have berthing seats for 4-5 passengers, so the passengers would be able to lay flat, similar to an international business class seat," he explains.
Swift knows private jet travel "All Too Well"
The journey would cost around $45,000, O'Leary estimates. It would generate more than 87,000 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2), according to a calculator from Paramount Business Jets .
But O'Leary says the Falcon 7X is one of the most fuel-efficient jets in the industry, burning 23% less fuel than the category average.
Swift is no stranger to private jet travel: She has logged days' worth of flights crisscrossing the globe for her Eras Tour shows and Kelce's games in recent months and repeatedly faced criticism for the emissions those flights generate.
Private jet travel is one of the most carbon-intensive things a person can do
"Taylor Swift's Jets," a since-deleted Instagram account that monitors her flights, posted in December that her trips generated 138 tons of CO2 emissions in just the prior three months. A spokesperson for Swift has said that she purchased "more than double the carbon credits needed to offset all tour travel" before the Eras tour started in March 2023.
Fans flying commercial may also notice a subtle nod to Swift (and Kelce) on some of the domestic flights headed to the Super Bowl.
Both American and United Airlines have added flights between Kansas City and Las Vegas in advance of the Super Bowl, with fitting flight numbers: 1989 (Swift's birth year and the title of one of her albums) and 87 (Kelce's jersey number).
Yes way! We also have flights UA 2287 and UA 1587 😉 https://t.co/cGEPrIiRFQ — United Airlines (@united) January 29, 2024
Swift will be rooting for "Red (Taylor's Version)"
The question of Swift's travel timelines has caused a bit of a frenzy, albeit for different reasons.
Former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy fanned a conspiracy theory about the Super Bowl being rigged to potentially give Swift — who drove a surge in voter registration with a single Instagram post last year — an even better platform to endorse President Biden, hypothetically.
Other reactions were more celebratory. People flooded social media with time travel jokes and jubilant "Traylor" (or Tayvis, or Swelce) videos. Late-night hosts speculated enthusiastically on air about Swift's plans.
Several fans treated for hypothermia at the fourth-coldest game in NFL history
Fans were quick to draw comparisons to High School Musical , in which the romantic leads' championship basketball game, academic decathlon and theater audition are all scheduled at the same time. (Vanessa Hudgens, who starred in the movie, endorsed the theory as "hilarious.")
Some of the Swift-related questions will likely translate into Super Bowl bets , not only about whether she'll make it to Allegiant Stadium but what she might do there: appear on screen, be accompanied by other celebrities, get engaged, etc.
Sportsbook Review notes that most legal, regulated U.S. sportsbooks "don't generally offer these types of markets, but it's likely they'll try to capitalize on the extra attention Swift brings to the 2024 Super Bowl."
Pop Culture Happy Hour
A match made in fandom: travis, taylor and the weirdness of celebrity relationships.
Swift isn't just bringing the NFL more viewers, but a whole new — and decidedly more feminine — demographic of fans, Princiotti noted.
"The NFL for years and years has been trying to court women and court more women fans, and to be frank, they haven't always been very good at it," she added. "And they have sort of stumbled into this hyper-influencer who's doing a lot of that work for them really well."
A Swift Super Bowl appearance would all but guarantee a huge boost in ratings, with Poynter reporting that it has the chance to become the most-viewed U.S.-based telecast of all time (even if she's only seen in brief glimpses, which a recent New York Times analysis confirmed has so far been the case).
The star-studded event will also feature pregame performances by Reba McEntire, Post Malone and Andra Day, Tiesto as the first-ever " in-game DJ " and a halftime show headlined by Usher. Swift has reportedly turned that gig down twice.

This is fan-flippung-tastic! The good ‘ol days! Life was simpler and society didn’t have a stick up it’s ass.
Yea who knew ol Nikki Sixx would abuse his fame to stalk a regular girl three decades later. Some girl named Vanessa with a username Brockettqueen on Instagram. He abused her then framed her and then she busted him stalking her. He’s the first celebrity in history to become obsessed with a regular fan. Look at her pinned content. She’s got courtroom surveillance with him in the case. He’s a prick with some serious mental problems.
I’m sorry, but i don’t know if I believe this, not that you care. I wouldn’t care, IF I were you. And if it was true, cause if it is, own it, BUT WHY ARE YOU ON HERE TALKING ABOUT IT? I THINK YOU’RE THE CHICK, VANESSA. I THINK YOU ARE “BRAGGING”& name dropping, and it’s funny- what are you trying to do with that story, anyway? THE GOAL??! We’re ALL human, why couldn’t he fall for a fan? What’s wrong with that, and you are wrong, GO FIGURE, yet again, 🤭He isn’t the first rockstar to fall in love w/a fan. JANI LANE/BOBBY BROWN Obsessed is the word you choose. YOU WISH. I THINK YOU WISH. YOU ARE VANESSA. YOU.😻MEOW.
Agreed. Time machine, please.… Like Axl in 1989.… (All year long, baby, yummy)! Ha ha If could, I go back to that simpler time, anyday… 😻😻!
I’d love to have this on Blueray or DVD. Going back and watching some of the BEST Bands around, to this day, some getting their recognition because of Head Bangers Ball.
Seeing all the old bands we loved. Knowing now, sadly, many of them are no longer with us.Dime & Vinnie, Chris Cornell, Layne, Randy Rhodes, Lenny……the list is too long.
Couldn’t wait for Saturday night, hanging out with friends to watch Riki Rachtman, Hosting, Head Bangers Ball! Finally! A show with REAL “music.” Rock and Metal fans were glued to the TV waiting to see what NEW Band would become our Favorite this week. Never wanting to miss a minute of the BEST show on television— Head Bangers Ball!
The early 90’s was an amazing time for Rock music. A time I’m thankful I was a part of. The memories this brings back is a nostalgic reminder of an idyllic time for many music lovers. I wish they would bring it back so the Rock and Metal lovers of today, could enjoy it like we did.
I’d love to have a list of all these bands and their songs to add to my library of music. I have a bunch of their cds but I’m sure I’ve missed some.
It’s true. Your just mad cause you want his little wee wee
I remember it was on after school. Then moved to Saturday night. We would drink beer, play cards and crank the TV. It’s how I discovered bands like Sepultura,Testament, death angel, white Zombie and Minestry to name a few. No internet, no cell phones and people didn’t get their feelings hurt over every little thing. And all the HOT girls were into it. Great times indeed.
I was a big fan of HB. Watched many bands get their start there including the first time a little song called “Welcome to the jungle” was played!
If those 1215 videos were on dvds,i would buy them. What a collection.
That IS vanessa clark. she is a stalker and he had to take her to court.
Get some help Vanessa. Seriously. That’s enough.
And you’re not ‘some girl’ You are a 40 year old woman with schitzophrenia. You cut that court room footage in to tiny segments. You need to be locked up.
Make that closer to 50 years old. Vanessa Clark has illness

They are my favorite 80's rock cover band. I like the mixture of guys and girls in the band. Polly and Claire have great voices as well as the lead singer and bassist. CC their lead guitarist is very talented. I try to make most of their shows when they are by my town or within 25 miles of my home town.

Great band we attended 6 shows now I believe and we love pictures after the show...still want a picture with Polly...guess I'll just have to keep going to see them...
This band is absolutely amazing! This show made the 4th time seeing them. I love the fact that they come out after for pictures with us fans! That means a lot! Can't wait until the performance at the Vogue next month!

England name squads for white-ball tour of New Zealand
England have named three separate squads for the white-ball series against New Zealand in March.
White-ball regulars Alice Capsey, Sophie Ecclestone, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Danielle Wyatt will miss the first three T20Is of England's tour of New Zealand in March this year due to their Women's Premier League (WPL) commitments.
The Heather Knight-led side will play five IT20s and three ODIs across March and April.
Hollie Armitage and Linsey Smith have been named in the squad for the first three T20Is and will subsequently be replaced by the four players who will return after the WPL.
England star all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt received two big ICC awards after her superb performances in 2022.
"We are really looking forward to the upcoming T20I and ODI series’ in New Zealand," head coach Jon Lewis said.
“This tour is another important step in our build-up to the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh later this year.
The head coach was also delighted to welcome the two new players, who he believes will add depth to the squad.
“We’re delighted to bring in Hollie Armitage and Linsey Smith to the T20I group. I have been really impressed with Hollie across the course of last summer, especially over The Hundred which I think is a really good indicator of how she might play at the next level.
"Linsey has been performing for a long period of time at a high level and gives us a high quality left-arm spin option. With Sophie Ecclestone unavailable for the first three T20I matches, Linsey is, in my opinion, the second best left-arm spinner in the country in T20 format," Lewis added.
Danni Wyatt was in imperious form, scoring a blistering fifty for England against Ireland at the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2023
