‘Reimagining’ of elephant exhibit under way at San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Construction is under way at San Diego Zoo Safari Park to remodel a 12.75-acre elephant exhibit in what zoo leaders say will be the largest “transformative project” in the park’s 50-year history.

The work is being funded by donors, with a major gift coming from Denny Sanford, a billionaire philanthropist who has contributed to many zoo projects over the years. The new exhibit will be called Denny Sanford Elephant Valley.

Work began in November and it is expected to be completed in 2025.

Zoo officials would not say how much they expect the project to cost and also declined to say how much Sanford donated toward the effort. They said fundraising is still being done to support the work.

Paul A. Baribault, president and chief executive of San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, said the new habitat would provide zoo visitors “a first-of-its-kind immersive experience” and would connect them to elephant conservation initiatives.

“Elephant Valley could not be achieved without the incredible community, donors, members and allies who support us and make all our conservation work possible with partners around the world,” he said in a statement.

The center of the exhibit will feature a two-story lodge — inspired by those seen by travelers on African safaris — where park officials plan to offer education programs. The new habitat is roughly the same size as the current elephant area but will include spaces like hillsides and slopes that are not currently used, a zoo spokesperson said.

The park has nine African savanna elephants.

According to the park’s website, Elephant Valley will take visitors “into the heart of the African savanna where you will be surrounded by our family of elephants,” with vistas that will allow them to “walk in tandem with the largest animals on the planet.”

Plants planned for the exhibit also will reflect African grasslands, park officials said.

“As magnificent as elephants are, their future is equally fragile,” Lisa Peterson, executive director of the park, said in a statement. She said Elephant Valley will be “a place where curiosity turns into discovery.”

African savanna elephants are classified as endangered — their numbers are under pressure from climate change, habitat loss and poaching. Wildlife Alliance officials say conservation is a top priority.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, there are believed to be about 415,000 African savanna and African forest elephants in the wild.

Wildlife Alliance works with groups such as Save the Elephants, The Nature Conservancy, Northern Rangelands Trust, Kenya Wildlife Service and Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in Kenya and has participated in scientific studies that increase the understanding of the species. A fundraising appeal on its website tells donors “your generosity will transform Elephant Valley and the future of elephant conservation worldwide.”

“Elephants across Africa are facing immense challenges, which require all of us to collaborate and find sustainable conservation solutions for elephants and people,” Nadine Lamberski, chief conservation and wildlife health officer for the alliance, said in a statement.

Sanford also was the lead donor for Wildlife Explorers Basecamp, which opened at the San Diego Zoo in March 2022. He also has given to other San Diego institutions over the years, including about $450 million to UC San Diego and $350 million to National University.

Sanford’s return to the philanthropic spotlight comes after prosecutors in South Dakota declined to charge him in an investigation related to possession of child pornography in late 2019 and early 2020. Sanford said in a statement through his lawyer in April that the investigation indicated his email may have been hacked.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park announces Elephant Valley project in 50-year history

By SDCN Editor

San Diego, CA–San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance has announced construction is officially underway on the largest and most transformative project in the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s 50-year history.

The all-new Denny Sanford Elephant Valley will reimagine the heart of the Safari Park, turning the current elephant environment into a dynamic savanna and a place of exploration. Elephant Valley will give guests of all ages the opportunity to connect with elephants like never before, encouraging greater empathy, understanding, and appreciation of this majestic species—and igniting a passion for wildlife.

“We are thrilled to announce Denny Sanford Elephant Valley—a first-of-its-kind immersive experience for visitors, to further connect the vital work happening here in San Diego to the collaborative elephant conservation initiatives we support in the field,” said Paul Baribault, president and chief executive officer, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. “Elephant Valley could not be achieved without the incredible community, donors, members, and allies who support us and make all our conservation work possible with partners around the world.”

Surrounded by elephants on multiple sides, including from below via an overhead walkway with views of the herd passing through, guests will learn about the crucial role elephants have as ecosystem engineers, and about their intricate social dynamics. Elephant Valley will provide guests with new insight into the role San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance pursues as a leader in wildlife conservation. It will highlight the organization’s world-changing partners and celebrate the vibrant cultures and local communities where people and elephants coexist.

At the center of the guest experience in Elephant Valley is a two-story lodge, inspired by the destinations frequented by travelers while on safari in Africa. This gathering place will provide opportunities to learn from educators about the awe-inspiring wildlife of the region while witnessing elephants wade in expansive watering holes. The rich plant life in Elephant Valley has been carefully curated by a team of expert horticulturists and arborists to authentically reflect the sights, sounds, and smells of the African grasslands. The vast new habitat will provide enhanced experiences for the herd of elephants by introducing several innovative features that align with seasonal variations to closely replicate the African savanna year-round.

“As magnificent as elephants are, their future is equally fragile,” said Lisa Peterson, executive director, San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “We are honored to take millions of wildlife allies on a journey into the life of elephants, where they will learn about the positive impact everyone can have, and share in our hope for elephants worldwide. Elephant Valley will be a place where curiosity turns into discovery—where anyone from ages 1 to 100 will experience breathtaking moments of wonder in nature. Our hope is that the defining memories you make here stay with you for a lifetime.”

The effects of climate change, challenges to human-wildlife coexistence, habitat loss, and poaching are taking a toll on elephant populations. African savanna elephants are currently listed as Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. Conserving African elephants has long been a top priority for San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. The organization works closely with Save the Elephants, The Nature Conservancy, Northern Rangelands Trust, Kenya Wildlife Service, and Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in Kenya for the conservation of elephants.  Scientific studies conducted in both Africa and with the elephant herds at the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, provide a unique opportunity to increase the understanding of the species and help develop additional conservation solutions. Increasing knowledge of the complexity of elephant social behaviors and the understanding of their overall health needs has given San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and its partners’ valuable insight into what successful conservation outcomes look like for elephants.

“Elephants across Africa are facing immense challenges, which require all of us to collaborate and find sustainable conservation solutions for elephants and people,” explained Nadine Lamberski, DVM, chief conservation and wildlife health officer, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. “We are eager to witness the impact Elephant Valley will have on our continued elephant conservation efforts globally.”

Elephant Valley is funded by thousands of generous donors and longtime San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance supporter Denny Sanford. In addition to Elephant Valley, Sanford was the lead donor for Wildlife Explorers Basecamp at the San Diego Zoo, and for the educational television programming of San Diego Zoo Wildlife Explorers, provided at hundreds of children’s hospitals, Ronald McDonald Houses, and other facilities across the globe. Elephant Valley is expected to be completed in 2025.

New 'Elephant Valley' coming to San Diego Zoo Safari Park in 2025

Rendering of new Elephant Valley coming to SD Zoo Safari Park in 2025

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance announced Thursday construction of a new "Elephant Valley" exhibit is underway. The alliance says this is the largest project since the park opened in 1973.

The Denny Sanford Elephant Valley will transform the Safari Park's core, modifying the current elephant area into a "dynamic savanna and a place of exploration." Once completed, all guests will have the rare opportunity to connect with elephants in a brand new way, fostering a deeper awe for the already impressive species.

The park expects to complete the ambitious project in 2025; however, the press release did not specify which month or season it will open.

Paul A. Baribault, the alliance's president and CEO, described the vision for the project as "a first-of-its-kind immersive experience" that will shed new light on the conservation efforts for elephant populations worldwide.

“Elephant Valley could not be achieved without the incredible community, donors, members and allies who support us and make all our conservation work possible with partners around the world,” Baribault says.

As the name suggests, the Elephant Valley will be surrounded by the massive creatures on multiple sides. Guests will also get to view elephants from above as they cross an overhead walkway above the herd.

The alliance described elephants as "ecosystem engineers" in its press release, and it also pointed out the species has complex social dynamics.

Vibrant cultures and communities that coexist with elephants will be highlighted in the exhibit, evidence of the alliance's collaboration with partners overseas, the release says.

The #1 spot for guests at the new exhibit will be the valley's two-story lodge, which mimics tourist locations travelers flock to while going on safaris in Africa. Educators will share their knowledge with guests at the gathering place as elephants meander their way to the large watering holes.

The safari park hired top-tier arborists and horticulture experts to recreate the African grasslands, capturing the authentic smells, sights and sounds of the ecosystem.

The expansive habitat will provide the elephants with seasonal variations replicating how the savanna changes throughout the year.

Lisa Peterson, the safari park's executive director, says the elephants' future is cloudy and fragile. The conservation effort is one of the park's top priorities to keep the magnificent species around for the long term.

“We are honored to take millions of wildlife allies on a journey into the life of elephants, where they will learn about the positive impact everyone can have, and share in our hope for elephants worldwide," she says. "Elephant Valley will be a place where curiosity turns into discovery—where anyone from ages 1 to 100 will experience breathtaking moments of wonder in nature. Our hope is that the defining memories you make here stay with you for a lifetime.”

Elephant populations are threatened by climate change, habitat loss, poaching and challenges with coexisting with humans, the release says.

The African Savanna Elephany species is listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species.

The safari park works with the following organizations for elephant conservation:

  • Save the Elephants
  • The Nature Conservancy
  • Northern Rangelands Trust
  • Kenya Wildlife Service
  • Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in Kenya

In order to better understand the animal, scientific studies of elephant herds are conducted at the zoo, safari park and in Africa, helping scientists develop more conservation solutions. “Elephants across Africa are facing immense challenges, which require all of us to collaborate and find sustainable conservation solutions for elephants and people,” says Nadine Lamberski, chief conservation and wildlife health officer for the alliance. “We are eager to witness the impact Elephant Valley will have on our continued elephant conservation efforts globally.”

Thousands of donors funded the Elephant Valley, and Denny Sanford was a major supporter, the release says. Sanford was also the lead donor for the Wildlife Explorers Basecamp at the San Diego Zoo, as well as the "San Diego Zoo Wildlife Explorers" educational TV program shown at hundreds of children's hospitals.

Construction is underway on the Denny Sanford Elephant Valley, touted as the largest and most transformative project in the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s 50-year history, the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance announced Thursday.

Elephant Valley will turn the current elephant environment into a “dynamic savanna and a place of exploration,” according to a zoo statement.

A massive, immersive elephant experience is opening at the San Diego Zoo

Elephant Valley Elephant Valley will be the largest project in 50 years

Construction is underway on the San Diego Zoo’s newest project. Elephant Valley , an immersive experience set to open in 2025, will be the largest project since the Zoo opened in 1973.

Located in the heart of the Safari Park, Elephant Valley will see the current elephant exhibit transformed into a dynamic savanna where visitors can explore and experience the elephants from all angles. Visitors will be able to see and connect with elephants in a whole new way, which the Zoo hopes will foster a greater understanding and appreciation for the species.

An expert team of horticulturists and arborists will recreate the sights, sounds and smells of the African grasslands to reflect the true habitat of the elephants. Some features will even replicate seasonal variations of the African savanna. At the center of the exhibit, a two-story lodge inspired by those enjoyed by travelers on safari will give visitors the opportunity to learn about elephants and their environment while watching the herd move across the savanna and wade through watering holes. A walkway will allow visitors to watch the herd from above.

The new exhibit isn’t just for the visitors, however. African savanna elephants are currently listed as Endangered, and conserving African elephants has long been a top priority for San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. Scientific studies conducted in both Africa and with the elephant herds at the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park have resulted in an increased understanding of the species to help develop additional conservation solutions. The exhibit will encourage visitors to learn more about these conservation efforts.

Construction on Elephant Valley is currently underway, with opening scheduled for 2025.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park welcomes okapi calf to the herd

The as-yet-unnamed calf will be able to be viewed by safari park visitors daily starting in april in the safari park's african woods area, by eric s. page • published april 8, 2024 • updated on april 9, 2024 at 4:25 pm.

The number of okapis at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park increased by one recently with the birth of a male calf of the unique species nicknamed the "forest giraffe," it was announced Monday.

The as-yet-unnamed calf, which was born on Feb. 18, will be able to be viewed by safari park visitors daily starting in April in the safari park's African Woods area.

The calf was the first born to Mahameli (“Meli,” mother) and Mpangi (Mm-pong-ee, father). Zookeepers say the young buck nurses several times a day and "likes to run circles around his mom and even playfully kick her once in a while," the safari park said in a news release sent out on Monday. "He also started taste-testing the [vegetation in his habitat], following Meli’s lead."

The safari park and zoo now share a total of eight okapi between them: There are four males (Nanoki, Mpangi, Upepo and the calf) and one female (Mahameli) up at the safari park, while the zoo has Zuri & Toby, both males, and a single female (Subira).

A reclusive species rarely seen in the wild, Okapi are native to central Africa and were discovered by Europeans in 1901. Although often confused with a zebra due to the black and white striped patterns on its front and hind legs, the okapi is actually the closest living relative to the giraffe.

Various causes, including habitat destructing and hunting, threaten the wild okapi in its native Central Africa, but, fortunately, "one-fifth of the okapi habitat within Africa’s Ituri Forest was designated as a wildlife reserve [in 1992,]" the news release also stated. "And since okapis are an 'umbrella species,' by aiding in their conservation, we also contribute to the protection of other wildlife that coexist in their African habitat."

San Diego Zoo Safari Park Announces Elephant Valley

August 15, 2023 3 min read

Wildlife Conservation Leader Will Bring Guests Closer to Elephants Through New Immersive Experience

SAN DIEGO (August 10, 2023) – San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance has announced construction is officially underway on the largest and most transformative project in the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s 50-year history.

“We are thrilled to announce Denny Sanford Elephant Valley—a first-of-its-kind immersive experience for visitors, to further connect the vital work happening here in San Diego to the collaborative elephant conservation initiatives we support in the field,” said Paul A. Baribault, president and chief executive officer, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. “Elephant Valley could not be achieved without the incredible community, donors, members and allies who support us and make all our conservation work possible with partners around the world.”

This gathering place will provide opportunities to learn from educators about the awe-inspiring wildlife of the region, while witnessing elephants wade in expansive watering holes. The rich plant life in Elephant Valley has been carefully curated by a team of expert horticulturists and arborists to authentically reflect the sights, sounds and smells of the African grasslands. The vast new habitat will provide enhanced experiences for the herd of elephants by introducing several innovative features that align with seasonal variations to closely replicate the African savanna year-round.

Elephant Valley Preview

“As magnificent as elephants are, their future is equally fragile,” said Lisa Peterson, executive director, San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “We are honored to take millions of wildlife allies on a journey into the life of elephants, where they will learn about the positive impact everyone can have, and share in our hope for elephants worldwide. Elephant Valley will be a place where curiosity turns into discovery—where anyone from ages 1 to 100 will experience breathtaking moments of wonder in nature. Our hope is that the defining memories you make here stay with you for a lifetime.”

The effects of climate change, challenges to human-wildlife coexistence, habitat loss and poaching are taking a toll on elephant populations. African savanna elephants are currently listed as Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. Conserving African elephants has long been a top priority for San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. Working closely with Save the Elephants, The Nature Conservancy, Northern Rangelands Trust, Kenya Wildlife Service and Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in Kenya. Scientific studies conducted in both Africa and with the elephant herds at the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, provide a unique opportunity to increase the understanding of the species, and help develop additional conservation solutions. Increasing knowledge of the complexity of elephant social behaviors and the understanding of their overall health needs has given San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and its partners valuable insight into what successful conservation outcomes look like for elephants.

Stay cool as you explore Elephant Valley with our San Diego Zoo Safari Park pachyderm tees, hats, and reusable water bottles. And bring home your love for these gentle giants with our home essentials including mugs, mosaic figurines, plush, and souvenirs. We have something for everyone in your herd!
