This 1991 GMC Safari Extended Van was owned by my 92-year old father in law. He purchased it in 1993 and has owned it ever since. The interior looks almost new, it has been a good truck, well cared for, and has a little over 141,000 miles on it. It is a V-6,has a new battery, new water pump, tires are good but it does need a fuel pump. It has a dent in the driver's side door, see picture, but it doesn't affect the opening or closing of the door. The air needs a charge, typical old car stuff. Other than that it's a pretty good truck, paint is good, was running fine before the fuel pump went and I can't fix it. It has a trailer hitch and plenty of room inside to haul things.

This is my personal Jeep... 1980 Jeep CJ-7 Odometer reads 76425 Inline 6 cylinders engine 4 speed manual transmission 4x4 with manual hubs I've had this jeep for 8 years - it spent most of the last 3 years of its life in a garage, not being driven very much. I bought this car from a multimillionaire cars collector from Coconut Groove who had the Jeep thrown in a garage for almost a decade until I bought it from him.  This car has been my baby for the past 8 years. He claimed to be Shakira's former manager. I don't know. . . anyways.  I used to drive this Jeep 3 or 4 times a week to work, about 7 miles from home, but it has been mostly garaged for the past 3 years because I have other vehicles to drive. I have never been off road; and it was built just for the looks. It runs great and it doesn't need anything more than an oil change and a wax. It does not have any engine noises and have the transmission and both differentials serviced not even a month ago. I had to replace the rear axel due to the fact that the OEM for that year is a 2 piece axel and it doesn't really work too well, I upgraded it to a Yukon 1 piece axel with 5 years warranty on it. I may still have almost all the receipts for all the work and regular maintenance performed to this beauty. I have pretty much done a lot of the things you see on the pics.  List of things: - Winch Warn (Cost $795 + installation) - Winch Mount (Cost 150) - Roll cage bolted to frame. (Cost me $399 + installation) - Hi Lift extreme Jack ( Cost $130) - Tire Rack w/spare fuel tank mounts. 2 tanks of 5 gal. each. - Hadley Dual Air Horn. (Cost $450) - Safari Sport Rack (Cost $498 + installation) - Over head sound bar Includes integrated interior dome light (Cost $450) + 2 Sony X-pod speakers. - Subwoofer w/amplifier (Cost $279) - It's got another 4 speakers, 2 on the front and 2 more behind the doors. - Pioneer DEHP-6700MP CD player. 50wx4 w/remote. - The Jeep has 35" Tires. They're about 1 ½ year old, so there's still plenty of thread on them. (Pics of tires included below) It is really painful to say goodbye to my baby after all the work and money invested, but it was all worth it... It was a super fun experience and I will do it again as soon as I can.  What can I say . . .IS A JEEP THING!!!!!!!!!!! Engine and Transmission: 258 cubic inch inline 6 - this engine is strong and reliable. Due to age, gaskets and rubber parts have needed to be replaced, here's a list of what was done: Water pump / Belts / Carburator rebuild / Clutch / Brakes / Gearbox / Battery I had Herculiner bed liner applied to the interior floor surfaces. The result is a basically waterproof tub. No rust anywhere. Also, the floor panel under the driver's seat has been replaced and reinforced, so no rust or issues there either... The back seat is original the two front seats are after market. The mid rise height is much more comfortable for long trips. The top is in excellent condition, everything works. Vinyl doors are included - they can be removed or attached by choice and they include a lock and steel rope for security when left attached. Call for more information or to check this Jeep in person. GMC Safari GT, a rad-era hauler with custom-van swagger

This rare 1991 example is up for grabs on radforsale.com.

The GMC Safari van, along with its Chevy Astro sibling, performed yeoman service ferrying passengers and hauling cargo for two decades starting in 1985. But one special variant, the Safari GT — and, at Chevrolet, the Astro RS — added an unexpected dollop of swagger. Those vans had a custom look that was straight out of the '70s "sin bin" era. One of those Safari GTs is up for grabs right now, fittingly, on the RADforsale auction site.

The option package at both GMC and Chevrolet was coded BYP, the GT Sport Package, and it appears to have been offered from 1990 to 1994. Its defining element was the two-tone paint treatment shown here, with black on the lower body and the greenhouse, and your choice of white, silver, blue, gold, or red as the main body color . Blanked out rear quarter windows and "simulated air exhaust louvers" behind the middle side windows added a further bit of style (long-wheelbase XT versions skipped that flourish). Also included were a front air dam, blacked-out grille, aluminum rally wheels, and a sport suspension.

This 1991 Safari GT appears to have been further sportified with a lower-body aero kit, a rooftop spoiler, and aftermarket wheels. This rear-wheel-drive, standard-wheelbase model is powered by a 4.3-liter V6 hooked to a four-speed automatic transmission. It has traveled a relatively low 126,000 miles and looks to be in exceptionally good shape — particularly given that most of these vans lived a hard life.

At this writing, bidding stands at $5,100 with bidding to end May 21. That suggests this Astro GT will bring a strong price — but if you want one, you may be hard-pressed to find another.

The GMC Safari was a series of vans introduced for the 1985 model year. The Safari was an upmarket version of the Chevrolet Astro . Rare Rides: An All-wheel Drive Chevrolet Astro RV From 1991

The Rare Rides series has touched on recreational vehicles twice in the past, when it featured a BMW-powered Vixen , and the custom fiberglass hodgepodge which was the MSV .

Today’s RV is smaller than either of those, but it can also fit into normal parking spaces. It’s the 1991 Provan Tiger GT.

Before this Rare Ride had a bathroom on board, it was a Chevrolet Astro van. The Astro and its twin the GMC Safari were produced for two decades. The vans debuted for the 1985 model year, and remained relatively unchanged until the last one rolled of the line at Baltimore Assembly (during the plant’s closure) in 2005. The Astro was the first minivan from General Motors, and was introduced in response to Chrysler’s wildly successful minivans.

GM used the S-10 truck platform for their vans, in contrast to the front-drive car basis of Chrysler’s offerings. The Astro was initially available in standard wheelbase only, in cargo and passenger versions. Seating totals ranged between two and eight. All-wheel drive became an option in 1990, and coincided with an extended-length version which rode on the same wheelbase. Power was provided by the unfortunate Iron Duke (98 hp), or more powerful 4.3-liter V6 (165hp). A manual transmission was available through 1989; after that, a four-speed automatic was the only option. A visual refresh and some updates in 1995 carried the Astro through to the bitter end. Let’s talk RVs.

Provan produces a line of recreational vehicles under the Tiger name, and continues doing business today. Retrofitting trucks in Columbia, South Carolina, Provan deals only in domestic one-ton trucks. They’ll build your truck into an RV to suit your requirements, so long as it’s American-branded and one-ton.

Today’s Tiger GT has one large room at the back, and features a convertible bed which will sleep as many as the owner cares to stack. Meals can be prepared via the propane-fueled range, and eaten on the fold-away dining table. All Provans (then and now) come equipped with a full bathroom, this one in particular lined with faux wood paneling.

All the extra living quarters add quite a bit of weight to the Astro. Fortunately, this one has the 4.3-liter engine, which the seller estimates will net 20 miles per gallon (no way). Front airbags are also indicated, so perhaps attention to detail isn’t a priority here. One thing’s for sure: It’s very clean. Other promises included a one-owner history, and 15,000 low miles. This van’s for sale on eBay for an easy $22,999. Adventure awaits!

The Dodge A100 and first generation Ford Econoline were minivans too, no matter how you define them. They were unibody vans based on compact cars and with lengths in around 170 inches. The A100 lasted through 1970, which really wasn't that long before the 'revolutionary' Caravan and Voyager.

Everyone seems to forget about the Greenbrier, it just proves that you can have the right vehicle, but if it's not the right time no one will be interested. AMC Eagle and Aztek know what I mean

@ToddAtlasF1 The Covair vans were based on a compact car, but the Ford and Dodge were not. Yeah they were unibody like the Falcon and Valiant they borrowed engines from. However the suspension on the vans were straight axles on leafs all around while the cars had IFS. Not even the rear axles were shared as the vans got bigger and beefier units.

@Scoutdude Considering how the three were meant to compete they were three totally different applications, rear engine compact (Corvair)/compact car (Falcon)/truck based (Dodge) I don't really remember how they did against each other originally, but I would think the Dodge would have been the real workhorse of the three

@Lie2me Dodge came to the game pretty late: 1964, vs. 1961 for Chevy and Ford, and of course VW beat them by a decade. Only the engine and transmission are shared between the two. 1) The S-series uses a full ladder frame where the Astro/Safari are unibody with a bolt in front subframe. 2) The rear axle, while a 7.5" as in the S series, is a completely different width/lug pattern. It has as much in common with the S-10 axle as one from an 80's Camaro does. 3) The front suspension of the RWD Astro/Safari shares no major components such as A-arms or spindles with S-series. Those components in the Astro/Safari are more closely related to the GM B-body full size cars. The AWD Astro/Safari suspension is unique to those vehicles only.

• Bd2 First, this was totally predictable. 2nd, Genesis already does have hybrids in the form of a 48V mild hybrid, but more performance oriented (supercharged and turbocharged), so not really helping with regard to fuel consumption. 3rd, Hyundai's hybrid systems don't really help as there currently isn't one that would be suitable power-wise and the upcoming 2.5T hybrid system would have to be heavily reworked to accommodate a RWD/longitudinal layout. 4th, it seems that Genesis is opting to go the EREV route with the GV70 the first get the new powertrain.
