Essential Guide to Visiting Mandu in Madhya Pradesh

The "Hampi of Central India"

m p tourism mandu

Sometimes referred to as the Hampi of Central India because of its treasure trove of ruins, Mandu is one of the top tourist places in Madhya Pradesh , yet is still delightfully off the beaten path. This abandoned city from the Mughal era is spread over a 2,000 foot-high hilltop, and enclosed by a 45 kilometer (28 mile) stretch of wall. Its spectacular main entrance, located to the north, faces Delhi and is called Dilli Darwaza (Delhi Gate).

Mandu was founded in the 10th century as the fort capital of the Parmar rulers of Malwa. It was subsequently occupied by a succession of Mughal rulers in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Mughals set up their indulgent kingdom there, resplendent with exquisite lakes and palaces. Mandu was invaded and captured by Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1561, and then taken over by the Marathas in 1732. The capital of Malwa was moved to nearby Dhar, and the decline of Mandu's fortunes began.

Mandu is perhaps most famous for the tragic tale of its last independent ruler, Mughal Sultan Baz Bahadur. He fell in love with a beautiful Rajput Hindu singer called Roopmati and persuaded her to marry him. She agreed on the condition that he would build her a magnficent palace (now known as Roopmati's Pavilion) from where she'd be able to see and offer prayers to the holy Narmada River. The sultan spent so much time with Roopmati that he neglected his kingdom and fled when Mandu was attacked by Emperor Akbar. Legend has it that he left Roopmati behind, and she choose to kill herself instead of being taken by the enemy.

The importance of Mandu's heritage and the consistent efforts being made to preserve it have been acknowledged. In September 2018, the Indian government jointly named Mandu as Best Heritage City in India (along with Ahmedabad in Gujarat ) at its 2016-17 National Tourism Awards.

Mandu is about two hours southwest of Indore, in Madhya Pradesh.

How to Get There

The road from Indore to Mandu is greatly improved. The easiest way of reaching Mandu is to hire a car and driver from Indore (arrange for one to meet you at the airport, as Indore isn't a must-see city for tourists and there's no need to spend much time there). If you're traveling on a budget, it's also possible to take a bus to Dhar and then another bus to Mandu. Indore is easily reachable by domestic flight in India and Indian Railways train .

When to Visit

The cool and dry winter months from November to February are the best time to visit Mandu. The weather starts heating up by March, and gets very hot during the summer months of April and May, before the monsoon arrives in June.

The 11-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival , which commemorates the beloved elephant god's birthday, is the biggest celebration in Mandu. It takes place in March, and is an interesting blend of Hindu and tribal culture.

In addition, Madhya Pradesh Tourism holds an annual Mandu Festival featuring cultural programs and adventure sports.

What to Do There

Mandu is a peaceful place to relax. Its sites are best explored by bicycle, which can easily be rented. Take three or four days to leisurely ride around and see everything.

Mandu's palaces, tombs, mosques and monuments are divided into three main groups -- the Royal Enclave, the Village Group, and Rewa Kund Group. Tickets for each group cost 300 rupees for foreigners and 25 rupees for Indians. There are other smaller, free, ruins scattered across the area as well.

By far the most impressive and extensive is the Royal Enclave Group, a collection of palaces built by various rulers around three tanks. The highlight is the multi-level Jahaz Mahal (Ship Palace), which apparently used to house Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din-Khilji's substanital harem women. It appears evocatively illuminated on moonlit nights.

The Rewa Kund Group lies a few miles to the south, and is made up of Baz Bahadur's Palace and Roopmati's Pavilion. This spectacular sunset spot overlooks the valley and river below.

The Village Group is most centrally-located, in the heart of Mandu's marketplace. It's comprised of a mosque that's considered to be the finest example of Afghan architecture in India, and Hoshang Shah's tomb (both of which provided inspiration for the construction of the Taj Mahal centuries later). Plus, Ashrafi Mahal with its detailed Islamic pillar work.

Where to Stay

Accommodations in Mandu are limited. Mandu Sarai and Madhya Pradesh Tourism's Malwa Resort are the best options. Mandu Sarai is a new hotel in the village, with comfortable rooms from 2,500 rupees per night. The peaceful upstairs rooms at the rear of the property face the Ship Palace.

The Malwa Resort has newly renovated cottages and luxury tents in lush green surroundings, starting from 3,290 rupees per night for a double. Alternatively, Madhya Pradesh Tourism's Malwa Retreat is a cheaper and more centrally located option. It has air-conditioned rooms and luxury tents from 2,990 rupees per night, and beds in a dorm room for 300 rupees per night. Both are bookable on the Madhya Pradesh Tourism website.

What Else to Do Nearby

The Bagh Caves, about three hours west of Mandu alongside the Baghini River, are a series of seven Buddhist rock-cut caves dating back to between the 5th and 6th centuries. They were recently restored, and are recommended for their exquisite sculptures and murals. Tickets cost 300 rupees for foreigners and 25 rupees for Indians. Bagh village is also renowned for its traditional block-printing on textiles using herb-based dyes.

Maheshwar, the Varanasi of Central India, can also easily be visited on a day trip. However, it's worth staying a night or two there if you can.

On the southern side it drops sharply for 305 m and merges with the Nimar plain, which is fed by the mighty Narmada River. The eastern, southern and northern side of the Mandu plateau is separated from the main Malawa Plateau by a deep ravine named Kakra Khoh. Located almost at the centre of India, Mandu has played a leading role in shaping the history of the country. For centuries it has served as a frontier outpost for the north Indian rulers for their invasion into the Deccan or to ward of invasion from the south. Over the centuries the kings of Malwa region of central India, along with the Delhi Sultans and the Great Mughal Emperors have made Mandu their abode. They have constructed Mosques, pleasure palaces, hunting lodges, pavilions, tombs, gateways, inns and shops, all within the natural and man-made fortifications of Mandu. No wonder the Muslim rulers call Mandu Shadiabad , meaning the City of Joy. Today the ruined citadel of Mandu along with its rugged but stunning landscape have transformed into a leading tourist spot and attracts tourist from far and wide. Mandu is also the only place in India where the baobab tree (a native of Africa) can be found in abundance. The Tomb of Hoshang Shah is located at the center of the complex and stands on a square raised platform. Above the roof is a slightly raised platform with battlement styled edges. It is slightly smaller than the roof and houses the massive marble dome in the centre. At the four corners of the platform are four smaller domes. The entrance to the tomb is through a arched gateway on the north. The gate way is flanked by two smaller arches with decorative marble screen. The southern wall also has similar archways but all of them have decorative marble screens. At the centre of the hall stands the cenotaph of Hoshang Shah (the original grave is located below, within the platform). It is a marble structure and is built is step pyramid style. A passageway from the pavilion leads to a open courtyard, which once housed the tomb of Mahmud Khalji. The courtyard is lined with small cells on all four sides. The Sagar Talao is a large lake on the southern side of Mandu. The road on the eastern edge of the lake leads to the Royal Enclave on the north and on the south it leads to Rewa Kund Group. The two structure face each other with Malik Mughith's Mosque on the east. The entrance of the mosque is through the center of the eastern side. On the either side of the entrance and along the plinth are 12 arches, six on each side. these lead to rooms. The rooms probably served as quarters for the mosque staff. A long flight of stairs leads to a domed entrance. Sadly the dome has long collapsed and have most of the pillars, which once held the dome. A Persian inscription at the mosque entrance mention that the mosque was constructed in 1432. The entrance leads to a open courtyard, with pillared passageways on all four sides. The centre of the western side is crowned with a dome. There are also domes on the south – western and north – western corners. Rani Roopmati’s Mahal

There is a poignant love story attached to Rani Roomati Mahal from where the name is derived.

Baz Bahadur was the last independent ruler of Malwa region. Once he was on his hunting expedition and he came across the shepherdess who was a great singer too. Baz Bahadur, who was an ardent lover of music and arts was smitten by her voice and fell in love with her. He told her to accompany him to Mandu his place and she agreed on the condition that she will only live in a palace from where her beloved Narmada river is visible. The palace was built for Rani Roopmati to have a view overlooking her favourite Narmada river.

However, their love story was short-lived as Baaz Bahadur had to fight a battle with Adham Khan, who was Akbar’s General and ultimately had to flee to save his life as his troops were outnumbered by Akbar’s.

Roopmati poisoned herself thus ending her life and also the love story.

Discovering Mandu: The Jewel of Madhya Pradesh Tourism

Mandu, or Mandavgad, is a fort city in the Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh, India. Renowned for its fine fusion of Afghan and Mughal architecture, it has been a significant tourist destination for not just Indian travelers but also those from around the world. The history of Mandu is rich with romance, battles, and the grandeur of its palaces, which continue to echo the tales of its bygone era.

The Historical Essence of Mandu

The earliest reference to Mandu dates back to the 6th century BC, when it was a fortress under the Parmar rulers of Malwa. However, the city gained prominence in the 10th and 11th centuries under the rule of the Rajput Paramaras. The golden age of Mandu began in the 15th century under the Ghuri dynasty, which is when most of the existing structures were built.

The iconic love story of Sultan Baz Bahadur and Rani Roopmati adds a romantic charm to the history of Mandu. Their respective palaces are still standing, overlooking the lush Narmada valley, becoming a symbol of their undying love.

Legacy and Attractions

Mandu is a testament to the architectural prowess of its former rulers, with impressive monuments that include the massive Jami Masjid, the imposing Hoshang Shah's Tomb, which is believed to have provided inspiration for the Taj Mahal, and Baz Bahadur's Palace. Jahaz Mahal, or Ship Palace, is yet another gem, situated between two artificial lakes, giving it the appearance of a ship floating in water.

The Growth of Tourism in Mandu

Although always a point of interest for history enthusiasts and architecture lovers, Mandu saw a more structured development in tourism in the 20th century, with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) taking charge of the conservation and preservation of its monuments. This not only helped in restoring the historic sites but also in promoting Mandu as a heritage destination.

In recent years, the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation has introduced various initiatives to lure more tourists. The annual 'Mandu Utsav' is one such event that showcases the local culture, art, and music, enhancing the region’s appeal as a cultural hub.

Latest Tourism Trends in Mandu

Tourism trends in Mandu reflect a growing interest in sustainable and responsible travel. The local authorities and hospitality sector are increasingly focusing on eco-friendly practices, including the use of solar energy and rainwater harvesting. Adventure tourism, trekking trails, and cycling tours around the historic sites are recent additions that cater to the active and experiential traveler.

Homestays and heritage lodgings have also become quite popular, offering visitors an authentic experience of the local way of life. Culinary tours that allow tourists to savor traditional Malwi cuisine have added a flavorful dimension to experiencing Mandu.

With its remarkable history, enchanting legends, striking architecture, and the windswept beauty of the Malwa plateau, Mandu continues to be a captivating destination for tourists from across the globe, narrating stories from its glorious past while embracing new trends in travel and tourism.
