This wikiHow teaches you how to see profile visits on Instagram by switching to a business or creator account. Since only business accounts are able to see these stats, you'll need to switch to a business or creator profile first. Luckily, you don't actually need a business to accomplish this, but note that your profile will become public when you switch. You'll also need a Facebook page for your business if you want to access all the insight stats available. Once you've switched to a business or creator account, you'll start seeing a count of profile visits in the last 7 days at the top of your profile.

Using instagram stories.

You can use Instagram Stories to check who has been frequently engaging with your account. You can use it to review the list of people who viewed your Story and look for malicious accounts or people who don’t follow you.

• Post a public story on Instagram.
• Now open your story by tapping on the profile icon at the top left corner.
• Then tap on the Activity section as shown in the image.
• Here, you can see a list of people who have viewed your story.

• In case you find someone whom you suspect of stalking you then just tap on the 3-dots icon next to their username in the list, and choose the Block option.

Using Story Highlights

• Open your Instagram story, then tap on the 3-dots icon at the bottom.
• Select the Highlight option.

• Tap on New , then type a name for the highlight and tap on the Add button.

• To check the activity on the story highlight, go to your profile screen and tap on the recent highlight.
• Tap on the Activity option at the bottom to reveal a list of users who have viewed it.

Using a Business Account on Instagram

• Open Instagram and tap on the profile icon in the bottom right corner.
• On your profile page, tap on the hamburger menu on the top right side.
• Here, go to Settings and privacy .

• Then scroll down to Account type and tools and tap on it.
• Select Switch to a professional account .
• Press Continue on the next screen to change the account type.

So are there any third-party apps you could use to see who viewed your Instagram profile? Yes, there are an absolute ton of apps that will have you believe that you can see who views your profile and find your Instagram stalkers. But, do they work?  No .

• SocialView for Instagram : It’s an iPhone app that claims it can show who checked your profile but one look at the reviews will tell you that it does not work.
• Profile+ : This app tries to make you pay to unlock features such as ‘who viewed my Instagram profile’ even though it won’t work. The app simply shows a list of users you have blocked, which is something you can see on the official Instagram app anyway.
• Follower Analyzer for Instagram : It claims to show you who views your Instagram profile when in reality it doesn’t do anything of the sort.
• Influxy : Yet another app that takes your information and does not show you which user viewed your account. Reviews claim that the app shows errors and crashes and asks you to sign in again and again.
• In Stalker : This does not work as advertised. Instead, it logs you out of your account and might follow random accounts using your details.

Why Don’t Third-Party Apps Work?

Additionally, Instagram’s Graph API, which was introduced earlier last year, is much more restrictive than the older one. This means that only apps approved by Instagram have access to the API which contains the information about who viewed your profile.

Hi! To be honest, I do not trust such applications, since they are not always safe for your personal data and most often show fake statistics. The only third-party service for Instagram that I liked is the Snoopreport service. There you can track likes, comments and follows of any open IG profile. And the most important thing is that you do not need to leave your Instagram username and password anywhere, but only enter the nickname of the profile you are interested in.

Instagram used to let me see who viewed my profile. I think it’s dumb they took that away though ngl

So then why do I get a pop up window that’s says so and so will see you as ” my insta name” viewing their post? It only happens on a select few.

How to Tell if Someone Viewed Your Instagram Posts

While you can’t see who viewed your Instagram posts, you can see who liked them. Users who like your posts regularly watch for your content or have turned on post notifications for you.

Check Your Likes

Since Instagram changed the Activity tab, keeping track of who’s seeing and liking your content is more complicated. You’ll typically see notifications in bulk, with only two usernames at the top, followed by a number. Nevertheless, you can still look at the complete list of accounts that liked your post.

• Go to your “Activity” tab by tapping the “heart” icon in the upper right corner.

Note: The list of likes may not represent the total number shown to you, such as receiving 18 likes but only seeing 16 profiles. Your actual count is the list, and the count difference occurs when specific accounts unliked the post, got closed, or switched usernames.

Go Into Insights

Another way you can get some information about who is viewing your content is by checking your analytics. This won’t tell you who, in particular, looked at your content. However, it will give you great insight into your audience. You’ll also learn how many views your profile is getting. Instagram Insights are only available for business accounts. You can change your personal one to a business account anytime for free.

Instagram’s policy includes certain discretion regarding sharing data with third-party apps. Those apps promising to tell you who is viewing your profile don’t have the insight they claim they have. Instead, they cause more problems than they’re worth.

Upon signing up, apps asking for your Instagram login info may steal your data. On the other hand, apps that require a subscription might steal your money. All in all, you should avoid third-party apps claiming to identify your secret admirers.

You may have also encountered third-party apps promising to keep you updated about your followers. While these can give you that information, you’re still taking a risk by giving them access to your account. In addition, it’s easy to check whether someone is still following you with the search function in your follower list.

How to Tell if Someone Is Stalking You on Instagram

Unfortunately, no. Unlike LinkedIn, Instagram doesn’t notify you when someone views your profile nor does it boast an in-app functionality to track your profile visitors, yet.

In case you have a business account, you can see the number of visitors you had in the past seven days, or how many users saw your posts in their feed. But when it comes to the names of visitors, the answer is a resounding No.

Instagram, like Facebook, is tight-lipped about this particular question, for obvious privacy issues. To put it simply, they have the data but they aren’t sharing it with anyone, not even you.

Do Third-Party Apps Show Your Instagram Profile Viewers

Yes and no. Yes, because you’ll find plenty of online tools and third-party apps for Android and iOS that claim to offer this functionality. However, the question of the hour is, do these apps actually work?

Well, as per Instagram’s stringent data policy, only the user’s name, username, bio, profile photo, and email address are shared with non-verified third-party apps. Since profile visits aren’t part of the deal, third-party apps are a no-go.

And apart from security risks, most of these apps fake the results. They usually pick random Instagram names and display the same to you. Unsurprisingly, some of them even ask you to pay a small amount of money if you want to see more than five names.

Going through user reviews on the Play Store and App Store will paint the same picture. They pick random names and scramble them up when you check next. Not to mention that an ad will pop up every few minutes.

Tip: If you’ve previously allowed access to such apps, it’s wiser to revoke the permission ASAP to avoid any data breach. You can go to Instagram’s Authorized Applications page to do so.

2 Workarounds to See Who Viewed Your Instagram Profile

Just because we checked off the direct, official methods, doesn’t mean all hope is lost. There are safe, indirect ways to check who viewed your Instagram profile. Follow along to learn more about them.

1. Track Instagram Profile Views via Instagram Insights

If you’re using an Instagram Professional or Business account, you’re privy to regular insights. Alongside witnessing how your posts, stories, and reels are performing, you can also view the number of visitors on your profile.

Please note, not who visited the profile just how many users visited it. If you’re interested in seeing those stats simply go to your Profile → tap the three-line icon → Insights.

Additionally, you can also use Instagram-approved apps like Creator Studio or Business Suite to deduce these insights.

2. Deduce Profile Views via Instagram Stories

If you’re still interested in tracking your visitors, the Instagram Stories feature can really come in handy. Firstly, Instagram allows you to see who viewed your stories. And secondly, stories posted by public accounts are accessible to almost everyone (unless they are blocked ).

All you have to do is open the story and either tap the Activity from the bottom-left or swipe up. The list of people who have visited your story will be neatly displayed, including users who aren’t following your Instagram account.

However, there is a little snag here. IG stories expire in 24 hours, so you can check these insights until that time is up. Besides, someone can view your story without an Instagram account as well.

Who Looks at My Instagram

On one hand, we understand Instagram’s angle of giving users anonymity. As they can search and check out someone’s Instagram profile without notifying them. Although, there’s a negative side to not knowing who visited your Instagram profile.

Which side are you on? Would you like Instagram to include the feature or should the profile visitors remain anonymous? Whatever your choice, our advice is not to trust unauthorized third-party apps with your Instagram account credentials.

If you have used LinkedIn, you might have noticed that the social media platform notifies you whenever someone visits your profile. Have you ever wished to see this feature on Instagram, too? Well, read along to find out if you can check who viewed your Instagram profile!

Is there a way to see if someone is stalking your Instagram profile?

Unfortunately, there’s no official way to see who has visited your Instagram profile. Since Meta’s Facebook was always in the dark about exploiting user data, the company doesn’t want the same to happen with Instagram and has introduced strong policies to protect users’ data.

Hence, you won’t be able to see the profile viewers even with the help of third-party apps. According to Instagram’s data policy , it only shares the user’s name, username, bio, profile photo, and email address with non-verified third-party apps and nothing else like profile visitors.

This means you shouldn’t trust your Instagram login credentials with apps and websites that claim to help you find who visited your profile. For your safety, I risked my data on some of these apps and websites to verify their claims! Undoubtedly, they were disappointing. Instagram blocked some apps from accessing my account’s data, while others displayed incorrect data.

Moreover, some apps even wanted me to let them monitor my activities on Instagram and my phone. These all were enough to silence the curious me. So, there are no ways to know who visited your Instagram profile, you ask? Well, yes, there is, and I will only mention the official and safe ways.

Indirect way to check who views your Instagram profile

Although Instagram does not let you see who has been stalking your profile, you can use a few workarounds to track who engages with your content on Instagram.

Check who viewed your Instagram story

The best way is to check who viewed your stories on Instagram. Whenever someone visits your profile, they either accidentally click your profile picture or check your story. In both cases, Instagram will let you see who viewed your story (unless your account is private); that way, you will know who visited your profile.

• Launch Instagram → Tap your profile picture at the top to see your active story. If you don’t have any active stories, upload one first.
• Select Activity .

From there, you can check the story viewers’ profiles, block them, hide your stories from them, or remove them from your followers list.

However, this method has its flaws. The main one is the inability to know who visited your profile since one can view your stories without necessarily visiting your profile. Another one is that you can see the viewers only 24 hours after uploading the story.

Has the story expired before you checked the viewers’ list? Worry not; I have a workaround!

How to see Insta story viewers after 24 hours

Instagram Stories expire after 24 hours of publishing. However, it allows you to see the viewer list for up to 48 hours. This is how:

• Go to your Instagram profile → Tap Archive .
• Select the story → Tap Activity .

You will see the total number of story views and viewers’ list. After 48 hours, you will only see the list of reactors.

Therefore, if you only want to know about your common stalkers, checking story viewers may work for you. If you just want to know how many people check your profile, I have mentioned how you can do the same in the next part.

Use Instagram insight

If you have an Instagram Professional account, you will see an Insight option. It enables you to only see the number of people who visit your profile (not the individual users). Besides, you will get additional features such as differentiating visitors from followers and non-followers and demographics.

You can also view your posts’ performance and even run ad campaigns for better reach.

To make your account professional:

• Open Instagram and tap your profile at the bottom.
• Tap three-line icons at the top right.

• Tap Account type and tools .
• Here, tap Switch to Professional account .

• Select the category for your account and tap Done . If you have a private account, you will be warned that your account will be visible to everyone.

• Select Creator or Business and add the necessary information to your account.

Note : You can only see insights information after activating it and won’t be able to check how many people visited your profile before.

Now that your account has been turned into a Professional account, it’s time to check Insights. For that:

• Go to your profile on Instagram and tap the three lines at the top right.

Here, you will see all the details, such as profile visitors. Besides, you can also use Meta apps, like Creator Studio or Business Suite, to check visitor counts.

Check who visited your Insta profile using Creator Studio/Business Suite

While you won’t know who visits your Instagram profile, apps such as Creator Studio or Business Suite can help you know how many people visit your profile each day. All you have to do is log in with your Facebook ID linked to the Instagram page or account. You will see the viewers under the insights tab.

Note : To use these apps, your Instagram page or profile must be linked to a Facebook page and profile.

So, that’s all you can do to find out who is checking your Instagram profile and engaging with your content. If you don’t want non-followers to access your posts or other info, move to the next section.

Make your Instagram account private

The best way to prevent others from stalking your profile is by making your account private. With this, even if they visit your account, you can ensure they won’t see your story highlights, followers, the following list, or posts. All you have to do is:

• Open Instagram and tap your profile .
• Tap the three-line icon at the top right.
• Next, tap Account privacy .

• Confirm by tapping Switch to Private .

Note : If you use a professional account, you will be asked to switch back to a regular account to make your account private.

That’s it! Now, no one other than your followers can see your profile and access its content.

No. Instagram users won’t be able to know how much time a particular user has spent visiting their profile. But if you view their story, they will get information about the viewers.

If you’re trying to figure out if someone is cyberstalking you, Instagram’s information cannot help. However, if you want to know because you’re running a business and want to reach out, it can help.

Currently, there is no way a regular, everyday, personal Instagram account can tell how many people checked their profile. There are no counters built into the app. So if someone is viewing your profile several times a day, you won’t get any notification,n and there isn’t a way to see who they are.

If you found this article through Google, chances are you had to wade through lots of low-rent websites offering ‘Top ways to see who viewed your Instagram profile.” They all say pretty much the same thing. Use this app or that app to spy on your own profile and generate a list of people who visited your profile or looked at your stuff without saying anything.

If you switch to a business account,t you gain access to more insights into your Instagram account,t including how many visitors you get. If you have to see who viewed your profile or read your Stories, this is how to do it.

Open Instagram and log in, then follow these steps:

• Select a category that suits you the best and choose Creator as the type of account you wish to set up.
• Hit the Next button. 

There is no approval process or any more hoops to jump through. Your Instagram account should now be a business account that automatically gives you access to Instagram Insights.

The upside is that you will soon be able to see how many people view you on Instagram going forward. The downside is that you must wait seven days to generate enough data to view.

Using Instagram Insights to See Who Viewed Your Profile

Instagram Insights includes a lot of data you need to review frequently if you use the platform as part of your business marketing strategy. One of the things it measures is Impressions, which counts how many times a post has been viewed.

Once your business account has been running for a week, you should see a notification at the top of your profile window. It should say something like ‘155 profile views in the last 7 days’. This tells you how many people viewed your content on Instagram.

Select the notification, and it will show you when you experience traffic, how many individual visitors you receive per day, and so on. To learn even more, select Professional dashboard on your profile page and then Account reached to see all the engagements done to your Instagram account.

Instagram Insights shows you engagement analytics that empower you to improve your Instagram for Business strategy .

You no longer have to guess about what works for your audience; Instagram Insights will tell you. You’ll therefore be able to get more likes, earn more followers, and grow your profile exponentially.

In this post, we’ll go over everything you need to know about Instagram Insights  (also known as Instagram Analytics )  and how to leverage it to improve your Instagram profile.

What is Instagram Insights?

Instagram Insights is a feature that allows Instagram Business Account users to see analytics related to their profile and posts. From this data, you'll be able to identify what your audience likes and engages with the most to improve your Instagram strategy.

Why use Instagram Insights?

Instagram Insights allows you to get access to important user engagement data for your business profile. It’s not just enough to know the raw numbers, such as the amount of likes you get for one post. It’s important to understand your audience, too.

That’s where Insights comes in. It tells you how they do things, what they prefer, and who they are. You can certainly make business decisions based on gut feeling, but you're much more likely to hit the mark when you can validate assumptions with cold, hard facts.

Data and analytics help you measure the impact of your marketing efforts across different channels to see if there's something you need to do differently — like target a different audience, post at a certain time of day, or experiment with a new content format.

Social media isn't any different from other aspects of your marketing in the sense that it can be measured and improved upon. That's why you'll be able to create a more effective Instagram strategy using Instagram Insights.

To use Instagram Insights, you must first have a business profile. The good news? If you're already using a personal account, you can switch to a business profile right from your phone. Here's how to convert your account in a few simple steps.

How to Get Access to Instagram Insights

• Open up your profile on the Instagram app.
• Access the Settings page.
• Tap 'Account.'
• Click 'Switch to Professional Account.'
• Choose your category and click 'Done.'
• Optional: Switch to a Business account.
• Optional: Connect your Facebook page.

1. Open up your profile on the Instagram app.

You can convert your Instagram profile to a Business account directly from your Instagram mobile app. First up, open up the app and click on your profile picture on the bottom right-hand corner of your feed.

2. Access the Settings page.

Next, it’s time to head to Settings. On your profile, click the hamburger icon on the top-right corner.

On the pop-up, click “Settings.”

3. Tap "Account."

A list menu will come up. Tap “Account.”

4. Click "Switch to Professional Account”.

By switching to a Professional account, you can get access to Insights immediately — even if you’re not a business.

5. Choose your category and click “Done.”

Choose the best category that describes you. Once you’re finished, click “Done.”

After, go back to your profile. Here’s what it will look like:

As you can see, you can immediately access Insights with a Professional account. If you’re a freelancer or content creator, you can stay as is, or you can take the extra step of switching to a Business account.

6. Optional: Switch to a Business account.

If you’re a business, organization, or brand, you’ll want to take the additional step of turning your Professional account into a Business account. A Professional account gives you full access to Insights, but is designed for independent digital creators. A Business account is more apt for companies.

Note that turning your account into a Professional account always comes before switching to a Business account.

To turn your account into a Business account, click the hamburger menu in the top right corner of your profile. Click “Settings,” then “Account.” At the bottom, click “Switch Account Type.”

Then click “Switch to Business Account.”

Done! You’re now a Business account with access to Insights.

7. Optional: Connect your Facebook page.

Lastly, if you have a Facebook Business page, it’s important to connect it to your Instagram Business or Professional account. To do so, go to your profile and click the “Edit Profile” button.

Under “Profile Information,” click “Connect Facebook page.” Follow the prompts to connect your Page or create a new one.

Once you’ve set up your Professional or Business Account, you can begin to use Instagram Insights.

Before we get into specific instructions for using it, however, here are the analytics on this channel that marketers need to know and understand — and how to use them.

Instagram Insights Explained

Let’s look at Instagram Insights from a bird’s eye view and zoom in piece-by-piece.

Insights Overview

Insights Overview is the “home page” of Instagram Insights. Here, you’ll see how you’ve fared overall.

You get several pieces of information on this page:

• Date Range: This represents the days and weeks of data on the screen . You can change the amount of time by clicking “Last 7 days” on the top left-hand corner.

• Information : If you’re ever lost or don’t know what something means, you can click on the “i” button on the top right-hand corner and get definitions for the terms on the screen.

• Accounts Reached : Accounts Reached refers to the number of unique users who have seen your content — posts, stories, reels, videos, Live videos, and promoted ads — at least once.

• Accounts Engaged : Accounts Engaged refers to the amount of users whom 1) you’ve reached and 2) interacted with your content in some way. Interactions can include likes, saves, comments, shares, and replies.

• Total Followers : Total Followers refers to the number of people who follow you.

• Content You Shared : This section gives you the overall number of posts, Stories, reels, videos, Live videos, and promotions that you’ve shared.

Now, let’s go into “Accounts Reached,” “Accounts Engaged,” and “Total Followers” in more detail.

Accounts Reached

Lets’ break down the different pieces of information you’ll find in this page.

• Reached Audience : The reached audience section shows you how many unique users have come across your content. Your reached audience will be broken down by follower status, gender, age, countries, and cities. You can also see the amount of people you’ve reached via ads and promotions.
• Content Reach : The content reach section allows you to see which types of posts have reached the greater amount of people. You’ll first see a graph with the number of people who’ve seen your posts, stories, reels, IGTV videos, and Live videos. Underneath, you’ll see your individual top-performing posts based on reach.

• Impressions : Impressions refers to the number of times all of your posts have been viewed — including repeat views by the same users.
• Profile Activity : Profile activity breaks down the actions users take after visiting your profile. You can see the number of website taps, business address taps, call button taps, email button taps, and text button taps. For these metrics to show up, however, you have to have set up those buttons.

Accounts Engaged

• Engaged Audience : The engaged audience section shows you how many unique users have liked, commented, saved, shared, or replied to your content. Your engaged audience will be broken down by follower status, gender, age, countries, and cities.
• Content Interactions : The content interactions section shows you the total number of times people have liked, commented, saved, shared, or replied to your content. It then breaks down this number on a per-post basis. You’ll also see your top-performing posts per category.

Total Followers

The total followers page of Instagram Insights allows you to see the total number of users who follow you. You can also see follows, unfollows, top locations, age ranges, and genders.

Under total followers and its demographic breakdown, you’ll then see one more section: most active times.

• Most Active Times : The most active times section shows you the hours and days that your followers are most often on Instagram. This allows you to determine the best times to post so you can engage the greatest amount of followers.

How to See Post Insights on Instagram

To see post insights on Instagram, navigate to your Instagram profile and click the button that says “Insights” right above your posts. Alternatively, click the hamburger menu on the top right-hand corner and tap Insights. There, you’ll be able to see Insights for all of your posts, reels, live videos, and more.

Next, let’s go over how you can see insights for individual posts on Instagram.

How to See Insights for an Individual Post

• Navigate to your profile.
• Navigate to the individual post you’d like to see insights for.
• At the bottom of the post, there will be a banner. Tap View Insights .
• You can now see how many likes, comments, shares, and saves your post received.

How to See Insights for a Reel

• Navigate to the individual reel you’d like to see insights for.
• At the bottom of the reel, there will be a banner. Tap View Insights .
• You can now see how many plays, likes, comments, shares, and saves your reel received.

How to See Insights for a Story

If your Story is currently live on your profile:

• Click on your profile picture.
• Scroll up on the story.
• You’ll immediately access insights for that Story, including replies, exits, link clicks, forwards, and more.

If your Story has already expired or more than 24 hours have passed:

• Tap the Insights action button at the top of your post grid.
• Under Content You Shared, tap the row of Stories you’ve shared in the past.
• Swipe up on the individual story you’d like to see insights for.

How to See Insights for a Live Video

If you’ve just finished your Live video:

• Tap View Insights immediately after finishing your video.
• You’ll now be able to see the number of viewers, likes, drop-offs, comments, and other interactions.

If you broadcasted your Live video in the past:

• Under Content You Shared, tap the row of Live videos you’ve shared in the past.
• Click on the old Live video you’d like to see insights for.

How to See Insights for a Video

• Click the Play triangle button (▶) right above your post grid.
• Tap the video you’d like to see insights for.
• Tap the horizontal (⋯) or vertical (⋮) three dots on the corner of the video.
• Tap View Insights in the pop-up menu.

Next, we'll get into how to use Instagram Insights in your day-to-day. 

How to Use Instagram Insights

Instagram Insights is a fantastic tool, but it can be hard to know what to do once you gain access. Here are some of the most useful ways you can use Insights as you grow your Instagram profile. 

1. Measure reach.

Click the Accounts Reached section. As mentioned, reach reflects the number of unique users that have seen any of your Instagram posts.

Within this category, you'll see insights for:

• Top Posts : The posts that generated the most reach.
• Top Stories : The Instagram Stories posts that generated the most reach.
• Top IGTV Videos : The IGTV videos that generated the most reach.
• Impressions : How many times your posts were seen.
• Profile Activity : Profile visits, website taps, and other activity.

Some of these insights can be expanded for more insights.

2. Track profile visits and followers.

On the Accounts Reached page under Account Activity, you'll be able to see Profile Visits.

Profile Visits reflects the number of times your profile has been viewed.

Find out how many of your profile visitors are turning into followers by dividing your number followers by the number of visitors. Track this number over time to find out whether your “conversion rate” is increasing or decreasing.

3. Determine website clicks.

Website Taps can also be found under Accounts Reached > Profile Activity. This insight reflects the number of times any links you've included in your business profile have been clicked.

5. Track content interactions.

Navigate back to Insights Overview and tap Accounts Engaged. This will bring up a page that shows how your content is performing in terms of engagement, breaking down the metrics by content type.

Likes speaks for itself, reflecting the number of users who liked your post. As with likes, Comments reflects the number of comments left on your post. Saves highlights the number of unique users or accounts who saved your post. If any of these numbers are low, it’s important to reevaluate your Instagram strategy.

6. Track your followers.

Navigate back to Insights Overview and click Total Followers. You'll then reach the Follower Breakdown page.

This page reflects how many followers you've gained or lost over the past week, as well as the average times of day when your followers are using Instagram — data that can be highly beneficial when planning posts.

7. Learn which actions were taken on your post.

To view insights for a specific Instagram post, start by visiting your profile. Tap on the post you'd like to look into, then click View Insights below the image

Under the “Profile Activity” section, you’ll find out the number of actions that users took on your profile as a result of seeing your post — things like visiting your profile, then taking an action like clicking on your website link or following you.

8. Use "Reach" to see where your post showed up in feeds.

Previously named “Discovery,” Reach indicates where your post was seen — or discovered — the most, including how many accounts weren't already following you when they first saw the post.

This section includes metrics on Impressions, which reflect the number of times your post was discovered from a particular place within Instagram, like the user's home feed, a search, your profile, a location tag, or a hashtag.

Reach insights also include data on a post's reach — which reflects the number of unique accounts that saw your post.

9. View Story insights.

Instagram users with a business profile are able to view insights into their ephemeral Stories.

To view your Story insights, navigate back to Insights and scroll down to Content You Shared section on the Insights Overview page.

Scroll down to the Stories section, and you'll be able to see insights for older stories, as well as any that have not yet expired.

Next, we'll get into the more specific insights you can explore.

Impressions

This insight represents how many times your Story was seen.

When viewing these insights, keep in mind that you're able to add multiple images or videos to your Story. When you do this, every piece of visual content in your Story is counted as a single photo or video in your post.

Let's say you add six photos to your Story. Whether someone only views one or views all six, Instagram only counts your entire Story having received one impression.

The same goes for Story content that has been viewed by a single user more than once. Instagram still only counts that interaction as the entire Story having received one impression.

Do Facebook and Instagram influence your politics? 35,000 took a break to find out

Facebook and Instagram may not have quite the impact on people’s politics as some critics have feared. 

A study published Monday by researchers at Stanford University, Meta and other institutions found that a subset of 35,000 people who took breaks from Facebook and Instagram for six weeks before the 2020 presidential election didn’t significantly change their politics by the time the election came around. 

The researchers found that staying off the two social media apps, both part of parent company Meta, had nearly zero effect — at least in the short term — on how people viewed the candidates, whether they turned out to vote and how they perceived the legitimacy of the election. 

But the researchers also found that staying off Facebook, in particular, was a double-edged sword for understanding the world: Those who deactivated the app appear to be less likely to believe misinformation about the election but also less likely to be knowledgeable about general news. 

The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is part of a broader study trying to understand how social media affects democracy. Under fire for years for upending how campaigns are run and how voters consume information, Meta formed a partnership with academics to grant them access to company-held data. University professors retain control over what they report. In the latest study, the authors said that Meta paid for the costs of the research but that it didn’t pay the researchers or their institutions.

Meta said in a statement Monday: “These findings are consistent with previous publications in this study in showing little impact on key political attitudes, beliefs or behaviors.” An earlier set of findings published in July concluded that Facebook had “significant ideological segregation” and that conservative sources dominated its news ecosystem. 

Academic researchers and social media users alike have been eager to understand, for example, whether so-called filter bubbles exist and if so what the practical effects are. Social media has been repeatedly blamed for “ ruining political discourse ,” spreading falsehoods and making polarization worse , and research into such questions is relatively young. 

A co-author of the latest study, Matthew Gentzkow, a Stanford economist, said one of the study’s findings was how little impact Facebook and Instagram seemed to have on polarization and divisiveness. 

“If we’re worried about those things, trying to control what people see on social media and whether they’re on social media may not be the most important lever,” he said in an interview. 

On issues such as immigration, mask requirements and policing, those who deactivated Facebook and Instagram remained polarized. 

But Gentzkow also said the study isn’t nearly the final word on the subject, because it was limited to the impact of Facebook and Instagram in a relatively narrow six-week time frame. 

“This study cannot say one way or the other — in a decadelong sense — whether social media is causing polarization or not,” he said. 

Researchers did find a small, unverified impact of Facebook use favoring Donald Trump, in which people who deactivated from Facebook were slightly more likely than others to vote for Joe Biden — the equivalent of 1.3% of Trump voters’ swinging to Biden. That could be because the Trump campaign was using Facebook more effectively or possibly because of other factors, the researchers wrote. Either way, they wrote, the difference “applies to the specific population that selected into our experiment” and “cannot be extrapolated to the broader population without strong assumptions.” 

The study bills itself as the “largest-scale evidence available to date on the effect of Facebook and Instagram access on political knowledge, attitudes, and behavior in a presidential election season.” It lists 32 co-authors from 14 institutions. 

Researchers didn’t look at the role of Facebook and Instagram after Election Day, when some supporters of Trump used them to promote allegations about election fraud and the company battled to take the allegations down . 

Meta worked with the researchers to find participants, placing invitations in people’s feeds in August and September 2020. And participation came with a financial incentive: $25 apiece for people who agreed to deactivate for one week and $150 for people to deactivate for six weeks. 

It’s not the first study to wonder what life is like for people not on social media. A study published in 2018, amid an online boycott called #DeleteFacebook, said that “the average Facebook user would require more than $1,000 to deactivate their account for one year.”

And in a study from 2019 , Gentzkow and other researchers found that deactivating Facebook for four weeks before the 2018 midterm elections had a variety of real-world implications, including increased self-reported happiness, reduced factual news knowledge and reduced political polarization. Gentzkow said more research would be needed to explore why that study showed reduced polarization but the most recent one did not.
