Work and Travel in Sweden

Help us grow. share what you know about getting work in sweden for travellers., volunteer and paid work opportunities in sweden for travellers.

Sweden is known as one of the most expensive countries in the world to visit. For the humble backpacker, it can be difficult to really get a feel for this country if your budget only stretches to seven nights. But volunteering opportunities in Sweden are available for those who want to jump into the wild. Here’s our travel guide for Sweden, designed for backpackers who want to work and travel. 1. Become a Bear Tracker in Northern Sweden Most people don’t know that there are still bears in Europe. They’re endangered and if you want to work in Sweden you could help track their movements. These volunteering projects are open to the total novice as you’ll receive full training, support, and all the materials you need to get started. It’s a chance to explore Sweden’s vast wilderness and to help protect the few remaining bears at the same time. 2. Help Out in a Sustainability Community in Gotland Work and travel in Sweden can take you to some of the quietest parts of Europe. One of these places is Gotland, an area of stunning natural beauty. You could spend your weeks there working in a sustainability community. These communities aim to be largely self-sufficient, which includes growing their own food, harvesting resources from the land, and protecting the natural greenery around them. It’s an excellent way of making new friends and enjoying some of the best natural sights in Sweden. 3. Restore Old Buildings in Sweden One thing you’ll learn about travel in Sweden is that the locals love to have a quiet place in the countryside. A great volunteering opportunity in Sweden is restoration of old buildings. Do you have a strong work ethic and a desire to restore older structures to their former glory? Then helping out with construction can be a great way to do it. You don’t need any prior experience and even some basic DIY skills is more than enough to win you a place with these private projects.

VOLUNTEER WORK VISA / PERMIT REQUIREMENTS FOR SWEDEN

Sweden is part of the European Union (EU) and part of the Schengen Zone. That means your Schengen visa will apply to the whole of the area. You can spend a total of 90 days in the entire area, before you have to leave for a minimum of 90 days. This applies to all nationalities, apart from residents of the UK and EU, who can stay and work indefinitely. North Americans, the Japanese, South Koreans, Australians, and Kiwis are able to obtain this visa for free when they arrive. However, Russians and South Africans have to apply for a Schengen visa in advance.

SEASONAL BACKPACKER SKILLS NEEDED IN SWEDEN

Spring work.

The short spring season from the end of March until the end of May is a great time to travel in Sweden because this is when many homestays are looking for volunteers. These could be farms in rural communities that want some extra work getting the farm up and running. They could also be lodges and country retreats readying themselves for the summer season. The work is varied at this time of year and it’s a good time to start connecting with the locals.

SUMMER JOBS

The long summer season, particularly the Midsummer holiday, is the ideal time to work and travel in Sweden. Depending on your skillset, you can find all types of work throughout the country. In the cities you can easily find work as a volunteer in hostels. These jobs will usually give you a free bed and free food in exchange for just a few hours of work per day. You can also join the many charities working with Sweden’s new immigrant arrivals. The country has received an influx of refugees and charities always need new volunteers to help them with education and finding their way around. It’s also a good time to head up to the more remote areas of the country. Many of the retreats, lodges, resorts, and adventure sports groups are only open for a few months of the year, so you can experience some incredible things if you get off the conventional backpacking routes.

In autumn Swedes go back to school and university. If you love working with young children, it’s a great chance to teach English in Sweden. This is a country that prides itself on having such a high proportion of English speakers. The curriculum prioritises English learning from a young age, so native English speakers will be able to find work as tutors either in schools or through private contacts. Sometimes this work can pay, but most of it is only available on a voluntary basis. Either way, you’ll make new friends, help set Swedish children up for the future, and be able to extend your stay in this beautiful country.

Winter in Sweden can be bitterly cold. Many travellers prefer to leave the area during this season. However, if you’re not scared of a little cold you can take advantage of Sweden’s winter sports industry. Ski resorts like Klappen, Branas, and Are are just some of the places that could provide you with volunteer opportunities in Sweden. Qualified ski instructors can find work with good pay and accommodation included. You don’t need to be a master to land this type of work. Even if you’re only taking beginner classes it’s possible to find work in Sweden if you apply a few months in advance.

ATTITUDE TO FOREIGNERS WORKING OR VOLUNTEERING IN SWEDEN

Sweden is one of the most foreigner friendly countries in the whole world. It has opened its doors to immigrants from all over the world, which is why it’s become so cosmopolitan over the last twenty years. Over 90% of the population have a good to fluent grasp of English. It’s not uncommon for young backpackers to want to work in Sweden, so you’ll experience no problems volunteering here. This applies both to urban and rural areas. It makes it one of the best countries for novice backpackers who want to get started with working and travelling. Are you ready to work and travel in Sweden?

A Guide to Jobs in Sweden

With Scandinavian culture becoming an inspiration for lifestyle changes, and buzzwords such as hygge and lagom popping up all over Instagram, you might be interested in traveling to Sweden. The colorful capital city of Stockholm in the east, contrasting with the snowy scenes of Lapland in the north, are just a few examples of the diverse scenery and drastically different ways of life that can be found in the center of Scandinavia. If that sounds like a Swede deal, hunt down some cool jobs abroad in Sweden!

Sweden is home to many cities that make for great city breaks, but these cities are also ideal for longer-term travel. Those looking to work abroad in Sweden can choose a location based on their lifestyle preferences. From comforting and cozy with wintery weather to modern, bright city life, jobs abroad in Sweden can be found all over.

Stockholm . The capital city of Sweden is one of the most populous cities in Scandinavia, and is actually made up of 14 islands as well as the most well-known, mainland city. Easily recognizable thanks to its colorful waterside buildings, Stockholm is a great destination for those looking to work in Sweden, receiving expats from surrounding European countries, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, in particular. Whilst working in Stockholm, travelers can visit a wide variety of museums, including the Vasa and Nordic museums, taste traditional and gourmet food at the out- and indoor markets, and enjoy a fika , or coffee break, in one of the waterfront cafes.

Malmö . Malmö, situated right on the southernmost tip of Sweden, is a hub for Scandinavian culture, with great art, music, and food scenes. It is also listed as the 7th happiest city in Europe! This could be due to a relatively low cost of living (compared to the capital), an environmentally friendly lifestyle (like the rest of the country), or the major plus of being extremely close and well-connected to mainland Europe. Residents and visitors can take a train to Copenhagen in less than 30 minutes.

Popular Job Types

There is a wide variety of popular Sweden jobs for foreigners, and the country is known for having great benefits for workers, including subsidized public services, great working conditions (including the aforementioned fikas ) and generous vacation allowance. Whatever job you are qualified to do, you can probably do it in Sweden.

Education . One of the ideal international jobs in Sweden for English-speaking expats is teaching. Instructing English classes in schools and universities is one of the most accessible jobs for those looking to work abroad in Sweden, as there is always high demand for English teachers, and classrooms tend to try and create an English-only environment, meaning limited Swedish skills should not be a problem. Teaching English in Sweden for any length of time is a great option for qualified teachers, and those who want to earn some classroom experience whilst working in one of Europe’s most attractive job markets.

Healthcare . Professional healthcare workers who are looking for a change of scenery could benefit from finding a healthcare job in Sweden. There is demand for workers in healthcare in Sweden, from medical professionals such as doctors and nurses to assistants and researchers. Expats will need the appropriate qualifications to work in Sweden, but many positions are also English-speaking, making the move a little easier.

Most salaries in Sweden are negotiable. With the increasing demand for teachers, educators can expect to earn between 20,000 krona (about $2,200 USD) and 30,000 krona ($3,400) USD per month. Salaries are based on experience and working hours. For other international jobs in Sweden, such as administration and hospitality, the salary can also be in the range of 20,000 krona per month.

Accommodations & Visas

Although rental properties are of a high standard, often including good quality furnishings and appliances, those looking to move to Sweden should allow themselves plenty of time to find accommodation. There is a shortage of housing across the country, especially in larger cities, particularly in Stockholm. Apartments are the most common choice for foreign workers.

Most people who get a job in Sweden will need a work permit. EU citizens automatically have the right to live and work in Sweden, but will need to apply for a residence permit to stay for longer than three months. Some countries will have to apply for a permit to enter Sweden, even as a tourist.

To undertake a work abroad program in Sweden, non-EU citizens will need to apply for a work permit before traveling. To obtain a permit, expats must first hold a job offer from a Swedish business. However, citizens of Australia and New Zealand can also apply for a working holiday visa. For more information about visas, see the GoAbroad Embassy Directory .

GoAbroad’s Inside Scoop

Working abroad can provide expats with incredible life skills, employment opportunities, and experiences that not only place them one step ahead of the game when it comes to finding work, but also allows for personal development. Experiencing other cultures in a working environment is an impressive and worthwhile feat, sure to open many doors for expats.

The work environment in Sweden tends to be very formal and professional , so when you start your job abroad, make sure to be prepared to work hard. Small talk is uncommon, like in other Scandinavian countries, and expats should not take offense at the Swedes’ reserved nature. Remember, they probably aren’t being unfriendly; it’s just their way of minding their own business! Honesty and integrity are admirable qualities of Swedish people and are highly valued in the workplace.

For many reasons, Sweden is one of Europe’s most desirable destinations, and there is a whole host of great job opportunities for expats. What’s more, why wouldn’t you want to live in one of the world’s happiest countries? As long as you don’t mind the cold weather, Sweden could be the ideal place for your next job.

Nordic Visitor as a Workplace

travel jobs sweden

As the travel industry is very fast paced, we're always striving not just to keep up, but to stay ahead. So we encourage our staff to continually develop their talents with a professional training program.

Work Processes and Organisation We've been steadily working towards streamlining our operations and improving our work processes.

Nordic Visitor has a clear strategic vision, which staff help shape through regular company-wide workshops. Employees are also kept up to date on major initiatives and regular operations with our monthly internal newsletter.

In order to track all of our major projects, we have implemented work processes and use collaborative systems to enable teamwork. Throughout the years we have also developed and adapted front- and back-office software that communicates with both our external website and accounting system. This system maintains a detailed record of all our tours, as well as income and expenses.

Work Facilities Nordic Visitor’s head office is located in Iceland. Since 2016, the home of our Iceland office has been Bíldshöfði 20, 110 Reykjavik. This location gives us room to grow, while ensuring a spacious, bright and comfortable work environment for everyone. It also benefits from ample parking and is in close proximity to Strætó city bus stops. The facilities also include a large, inviting cafeteria where lunch is served daily and complimentary snacks, tea and coffee are available during working hours.

The Stockholm office is located in a renovated office space at Alsnögatan 11, on lower Södermalm. The space is bright and airy and offers comfortable working facilities. There is also a beautiful outdoor spaceas the office has access to a large shared terrace overlooking the canal. The Stockholm office space also includes a large conference/lunch room, complimentary snacks, tea and coffee available during working hours, and a shared, in-house restaurant serving lunch, drinks and “fika”.

The Edinburgh office is located at 139/2 George Street in the New Town and at the heart of the city centre. The space is bright and airy and offers comfortable working conditions and a stimulating work environment. Located close to shops, restaurants and the beautiful Princes Street Gardens, the office has views of Edinburgh Castle and Firth of Forth. There’s a meeting room, breakout space and kitchen facilities. Employees have access to complimentary snacks, tea and coffee during working hours.

travel jobs sweden

We also encourage open communication throughout the company. Therefore, we regularly conduct opinion surveys, in association with trade union VR, to check on our employees' well-being at work. Time and again, results show that employee attitudes regarding Nordic Visitor, both as an employer and as a company, are very positive.

Employee pride and satisfaction also rank consistently high, so our employee turnover has remained low. In our most recent VR survey, Nordic Visitor scored among the highest of all tourism companies in Iceland in terms of employee attitudes toward their workplace.

Nordic Visitor has been honoured as “Company of the Year” at the Iceland labour union’s annual awards ceremony for four consecutive years, from 2017 to 2020. This is thanks to the positive perception of the company among staff members and the high rate of staff participation in the annual VR survey.

The aim of the survey is to examine the working conditions and well-being of employees, their attitudes towards managers, and the quality of communication in the workplace, to name but a few. • Career counseling opportunities are not meeting the demand
  • A lack of knowledge about recruitment processes for the Swedish labor market

Summer Jobs

To receive said training, you can apply via an aviation college degree for pilot training in flight schools or get a student pilot license and private pilot license from the Swedish Air Force.

Teachers are among the highest paying jobs in Sweden as the National Board of Statistics attests to the profession earning an average salary of 180000 in Swedish Krona or $16500 annually.

As a profitable professional path, this average salary dwarfs many jobs found in Sweden.

Many teachers are assigned to special education classes or high-needs schools, with higher compensation due to the specialized training needed.

Frequently Ask Questions

You may know the average salary and most sought-after jobs in Sweden, but there are other factors to consider should you immigrate.

What Would Constitute a Great Pay in Sweden?

A family of 4 can get by on an average monthly salary of 2300 while living in Stockholm, the country’s busiest and most costly city.

In comparison, an expat could live off of 12800 SEK while in the other best places in Sweden and the same city.

It is considered a right for citizens from the EU or EEA to live in the country, making a living as an immigrant quite feasible and legal by the European community.

How Much Money Can You Make Doing a Part-Time Job?

You can earn around 700-1000 euros in Sweden or 11347 SEK monthly.

We advise that you consider not only your spending habits but also the Swedish living price , which generally should live purely on part-time work.

Such an example to consider would be how the electricity price in Sweden can fluctuate with the weather.

How Do I Find Employment in Sweden?

The challenging nature of employment in Sweden varies depending on the nature of your profession and how well you can speak Swedish.

However, there are always job postings and assistance from the Swedish Public Employment Service ( Arbetsförmedlingen ) for knowledge, direction, and help.

All the while, there are various privately owned employment sites for you to consider.

The benefits and privileges for new foreigners even extend to those moving to Sweden without a job , which is quite an easy feat to do.

Do You Get Paid When Doing Internships in Sweden?

It depends on the business offering teh internship, as some businesses offer refunds or allowances instead of regular payments.

Unfortunately, unpaid internships are normal in Gothenburg and the rest of Sweden’s cities and businesses.

Sweden is a land of great opportunities and prosperity you can gain if you move into the country.

Besides the obvious highly respected professions such as lawyers or doctors, some professions in Sweden flourish more than in other countries, such as teachers or dentists.

It will be confusing at first, but the benefits will make pursuing these jobs more than worth it.
