A great COVID-19 test solution for travel: British Airways partners with Qured for 20-minute test results

Traveling during the coronavirus pandemic is anything but stress-free. There are entry restrictions for where you're traveling to , as well as the need for a negative COVID-19 result to return home .

British Airways has teamed with COVID-19 testing provider Qured to offer passengers tests that will give results in 20 minutes — and for a discounted price.

As of Thursday, British Airways customers who are booking a flight or holiday with the airline will be eligible to purchase a government-approved antigen COVID-19 test kit at a discounted price of about $46 (£33). The best part of the test is that it can be taken completely remotely with the supervision of a healthcare provider via video call.

In other words, if you're traveling to a remote destination and worried about locating a COVID-19 test for your return home, a remote and self-administered test like this could be the perfect option.

Before leaving on holiday, the traveler will be able to order tests, which will be delivered to them in the U.K. The passenger can then take kits with them abroad, as they're small and easy to pack. When the passenger is ready to return to the U.K., they'll be able to take their packed-away test, join a video appointment to take the test and get the results in 20 minutes.

Here's how it works.

If you're interested in getting a Qured testing kit, you can select to do so while booking your BA travel. You can purchase each test for around $46 as mentioned above. The kit — or kits — will be delivered to your home address with a next-day-delivery service. (Note that it's only available for delivery in the U.K. at this time.)

Once you've ordered a test, you'll receive an email from Qured that you can register for an appointment with a professional health advisor. This appointment should be made with ample time before your scheduled departure.

At the time of your virtual appointment, you will join a video call with the health advisor who will guide you through a throat and nose swab, which should take about 10 minutes. The health advisor will be required to watch you self-administer the test and process the sample to ensure it's done accurately.

After successfully self-administering the test, you'll need to wait 20 minutes for the result. Once the 20 minutes has passed, you'll need to email a photo of the test and your photo ID to Qured. If the test returns a negative result, Qured will email you a "fit to fly" certificate, which you can present to the relevant authorities during your travels.

Ultimately, this is a great addition from British Airways, aiming to make it easier for passengers to be able to book with confidence when they consider securing relevant testing requirements for their travels.

"As we look forward and prepare for a safe return to travel, we remain focused on finding and offering the most convenient and affordable testing options for our customers," British Airways CEO Sean Doyle said in a statement. "Our teams were pleased to discover Qured, a unique new option which removes uncertainty and unnecessary expense for customers who may be concerned about sourcing a pre-departure test while away from home."

Keep in mind that these tests are antigen tests, which don't qualify for all entry restrictions. However, both the U.K. and the U.S. accept antigen test results as an entry requirement.

The Qured tests as part of this partnership, however, don't qualify for the mandatory COVID-19 tests England requires for arriving passengers during quarantine. Since Feb. 15, England requires all arriving passengers quarantine for 10 days — some in a hotel quarantine , depending on where they arrived from — and take two COVID-19 tests on days two and eight of quarantine . Those tests must be purchased directly through the government.

Better yet, travelers will be able to load their negative test results into BA's health app VeriFly. The digital health travel passport is available to passengers traveling between London on the U.S. and on all BA inbound routes to the U.K.

The airline also said that it's working with the International Aiir Transport Association (IATA) on the development of its Travel Pass.

Keep in mind that at this time, the U.K. remains in its third national lockdown, and as such, all non-essential travel remains illegal. Last week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson unveiled the roadmap out of lockdown for England . At the earliest, that could see the resumption of international travel from May 17 — depending on the findings of the new Global Travel Taskforce .

British Airways has launched a new interactive map providing its customers with the latest travel restrictions and entry requirements.

The map is accessible through the existing Covid hub and is expected to be integrated into ba.com. It allows visitors to learn about travel restrictions in each country before booking a trip. Customers can search by traffic light color or by typing in their destination, and a filter showing vaccination status helps to narrow the results.

The page was designed by the company Sherpa and gathers up-to-date information for more than 100 countries. The central Covid-19 airline page contains information on flexible booking, screening, voucher use and onboard measures.

We know that travel in this new Covid era can feel overwhelming for our customers, and our job is to make their lives as straightforward as possible. This new tool, which has been tried and is trusted by our joint business partner, American Airlines, will help people navigate the differing entry requirements, to allow for a smooth booking and travel experience.

Easyjet has a similar online tool which features a live travel map showing the latest restrictions for travel to and from the 35 countries on Easyjet’s European network.

Airline alliance groups Oneworld and Skyteam recently enhanced their Covid-19 information portals, while London City airport launched a new passenger travel portal in May.

British Airways, American Airlines Launch COVID-19 Testing Pilot Program for Flights From the U.S. To London

Passengers heading out of Dallas, New York, or Los Angeles will be able to participate.

British Airways and American Airlines will now allow passengers to be tested for COVID-19 on several flights from the U.S. to London as part of a pilot program starting later this month.

The tests, which will be free starting Nov. 25, will be offered to eligible customers booked on specific American Airlines flights from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport to London Heathrow, as well as certain British Airways flights from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport to London, according to the airlines. In the future, American Airlines expects to expand the program on one of its flights from New York’s JFK to London.

To participate, eligible American and British Airways passengers will be contacted and given the chance to volunteer. They will take three tests: an at-home RT-PCR test taken 72 hours before departure from the U.S. under the supervision of a virtual doctor’s visit; a second test at the airport upon landing in London (one of several airports that offer on-site COVID-19 testing ); and then a third, at-home saliva test three days after their arrival.

The trial follows the launch of a similar testing pilot program on United Airlines , which kicked off on Monday on flights from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey to London. However, the United program is mandatory for all passengers on that flight while American and British Airways have made their testing optional.

"The UK is a critically important business and leisure destination that our customers want to visit,” Chairman and Chief Executive of American Airlines Doug Parker said in a statement. “We believe the results provided by this trial will be vital for reopening transatlantic travel safely."

Currently, Americans are required to self-isolate for 14 days upon arrival in the UK, according to the government .

American Airlines already offers pre-flight testing for flights to Hawaii, Jamaica, the Bahamas, and Costa Rica, and this week expanded its at-home testing program for flights to Belize, Grenada, and St. Lucia.

Several other airlines -- including United and Hawaiian Airlines -- have also introduced pre-flight testing for travelers headed to Hawaii in an effort to help visitors skip the state’s mandatory quarantine .

Travel Requirements

To reassure travelers before travel, British Airways is providing the tools and solutions to help you plan your journey and make it as seamless and safe as possible :

  • Useful information on the latest travel restrictions and entry requirements can be checked using the new interactive map on ba.com .
  • To help you book the test you need, British Airways brought together a range of COVID-19 testing suppliers in the UK and the US that offer exclusive discounts .
  • British Airways passengers can download the new digital health travel passport, VeriFLY , to check if they meet the entry requirements of their destination. Its use is optional , and passengers will also continue to be able to check they meet entry requirements at check-in. British Airways continues exploring digital health travel wallet and document verification solutions, including the IATA Travel Pass.

Award-winning COVID-19 Safety Standards

British Airlines was one of the first airlines to undergo the COVID-19 Safety Audit by Skytrax that investigates and evaluates safety and hygiene protocols introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to enhance customer and staff safety. After a complex analysis of the hygiene and safety procedures, British Airlines received a 4-Star Covid-19 Safety Rating based on the standards provided at the airport and onboard flights :

  • Face mask policy . At all times in the airport and on board the aircraft, all passengers need to wear a face mask covering their nose and mouth, except children under the age of 11 (under the age of 2 on flights to/from the U.S.) and those who meet the government’s exemption requirements (supporting documentation may be necessary) . A face mask could last up to four hours, so make sure you bring enough for the duration of your trip. You will be asked to remove your face mask for any passport checks, but you’ll be advised when to do so by. On board, you are allowed to remove your face mask only for a reasonable time to eat or drink.
  • Minimizing contact . Online and Mobile Check-in options and self-service bag drop service can help you keep contact at the airport to a minimum. If you can’t check in online, use one of the self-service kiosks that are regularly sanitized , or go to a check-in desk where screens have been installed to protect you . Dettol sanitizing stations are positioned next to check-in kiosks and desks and throughout the airport. At selected lounges at Heathrow, Terminal 5 that are now open, British Airways introduced new measures to ensure your health and safety : contactless lounge entry, enhanced cleaning, safe distance markers, contact-free food and drink orders brought directly to the seat.
  • Boarding . British Airways introduced new boarding procedures to minimize contact when passengers take their seats . At the gate, have your boarding pass ready to scan it yourself and your passport open so that a British Airways employee can check it . Priority boarding is available only for families and customers who may need additional time to board. First Class passengers board first from the first row to the back row of the cabin. The rest of the passengers board the aircraft from the rear to the front.
  • Cleaning . Key surfaces , including seats, armrests, seat belt buckles, tray tables, toilets, and storage area, are sanitized after every flight . Aircraft are cleaned thoroughly from nose to tail every day . The air in the cabin is filtered and renewed every two to three minutes . Cabin air is made up of fresh air, drawn from outside and heated significantly above virus-killing temperatures, and air passed through HEPA filters that remove even the tiniest particles, down to microscopic bacteria and virus clusters, with over 99.9% efficiency.
  • Onboard service . Once on board the aircraft, passengers are offered Dettol anti-bacterial hygiene wipes to sanitize hands or surfaces. You should minimize moving around the cabin as much as possible. If you need help, there is a call button you can use, and a crew member will assist you at your seat. British Airways made some changes to the onboard service to reduce contact onboard , such as removing magazines and newspapers, a new food service (the Speedbird Café menu is available to pre-purchase at highlifeshop.com for short-haul flights in Euro Traveller class, menu cards are available only in First and Club World classes, special meals are available to pre-order when booking your flight), individually wrapped blankets and bedding available only on long-haul flights to guarantee cleanliness.

Flexible Booking

Understanding that travel plans need to change sometimes, British Airways introduced its book with confidence policy with flexible travel options for bookings made from March 3, 2020, onwards for journeys due to be completed by August 31, 2022 :

  • Change your dates with no additional fees . If you want to change the dates, you can do it online from Manage My Booking.
  • Change your destination with no additional fees . You need to complete the online voucher form to change your destination and dates. British Airways will cancel the booking on your behalf and email you a voucher to the value of your booking, valid until September 30, 2023.
  • Cancel your booking with no additional fees . If you need to cancel your trip, you can claim a voucher for the value of your booking . Within seven days of your application, you will receive your voucher by email that you can use as payment, or a part payment, for a future booking that must be fully completed by September 30, 2023 (departure and return) .

If your flight has been canceled, you can claim a refund.

British Airways (BA) has issued a major update for passengers who have been impacted by Covid-related travel delays and cancellations.

BA dished out vouchers for passengers but recently announced customers now have an extra year to use them.

Vouchers will now be valid for another 12 months, lasting until September 2024.

International Airlines Group, the parent company to British Airways, estimated it was sitting on around £533million worth of unused vouchers last month.

The £533million figure includes unredeemed vouchers from other airlines, including Dublin-based Aer Lingus and Spanish airline Iberia.

BA has opted to extend vouchers in the wake of Covid-induced chaos before.

The UK’s largest airline handed out flight vouchers in 2020.

The vouchers were initially supposed to be used on journeys which were completed on April 30 last year.

The deadline was extended to September 30 this year.

However, another deadline was recently approved, giving BA customers until September 30 next year.

The expiry date on vouchers will be automatically updated to ensure customers do not need to do anything to take advantage of the extension.

More than 700,000 vouchers were redeemed last year.

A total of 3.3 million vouchers were issued following the coronavirus pandemic, The Sun has revealed.

There remains an opportunity for impacted passengers to get cash back from the airline rather than redeem a voucher.

Passengers who accepted a post-cancellation voucher without the option to receive a refund can dispute the situation.

BA customers who had flights cancelled between March 9 and November 19 in 2020 can request a refund by providing their voucher code, title, full name, email address and mobile phone number.

Bookings completed through a third party, including travel agents, will require customers to contact them directly to process a cash refund.

This latest update follows on from the US government announcing a travel ban earlier this week that prevents foreign nationals from Europe, the UK, and Ireland from entering the US.

British Airways

British Airways' parent company International Consolidated Airways (IAG) has acknowledged that due to the COVID-19 travel bans, it has forced the company to suspend flights to China, reduce capacity on Asian routes, and cancel all flights to, from, and within Italy. 

Consequently, the company said it expects for a reduction to its fleet capacity by at least 75% for April and May.

"We have seen a substantial decline in bookings across our airlines and global network over the past few weeks and we expect demand to remain weak until well into the summer," IAG chief executive Willie Walsh said. 

"We are therefore making significant reductions to our flying schedules. We will continue to monitor demand levels and we have the flexibility to make further cuts if necessary."

As for customers, the company is giving passengers the flexibility to change their travel destination, travel date, or both for free on all new bookings from now to May 31, as well as any existing bookings that depart up to May 31. Otherwise, there is the option to make a cancellation in exchange for a travel voucher that is valid for travel within 12 months from the original departure date.

The COVID-19 travel bans have also had similar impacts on Ryanair. The airline has announced it expects to reduce its seat capacity by up to 80% for April and May. At the same time, the airline is looking to ground the majority of its fleet across Europe over the next 7-10 days.

The airline noted it has not ruled out grounding its fleet entirely, after seeing a substantial decline in bookings over the last two weeks, which Ryanair expects will continue for the foreseeable future. 

"Ryanair is taking all actions necessary to cut operating expenses, and improve cash flows at each of our airlines," Ryanair's Michael O'Leary said.

"Ryanair is a resilient airline group, with a very strong balance sheet, and substantial cash liquidity, and we can, and will, with appropriate and timely action, survive through a prolonged period of reduced or even zero flight schedules, so that we are adequately prepared for the return to normality, which will come about sooner rather than later as EU governments take unprecedented action to restrict the spread of Covid-19."

To reflect these changes, the Irish budget airline has removed the flight change fee for all existing bookings in April. Customers will only have to pay for the fare difference. 

Air France-KLM

The airline has said that due to increasing travel restrictions and a sharp decline in demand, it will be forced to reduce its flight capacity by up to 90% over the next few days. The reductions are expected to last two months. 

To assist affected passengers, Air France is offering those who have purchased a ticket for a flight departing before May 31 the option to postpone their departure date for free, under the condition the new trip begins no later than November 30. 

Passengers are also welcome to cancel their flight in exchange for a travel voucher, Air France stated, highlighting it will be valid for one year on all Air France, KLM, Delta Air Lines, and Virgin Atlantic flights. Similarly, those passengers whose flights have been cancelled will be offered a travel voucher.

Like other airlines, EasyJet passengers are being offered the choice to change the date, destination, or both for free. Customers are only required to pay the fare price difference. This applies to both existing and new bookings until further notice, the company said. 

It added that due to uncertain times, it will not provide any financial guidance for the remainder of the FY20 financial year. Instead, the company said it will focus on "every action to remove cost non-critical expenditure from the business at every level". 

"Aircraft groundings will remove significant levels of variable costs," EasyJet said. 

Lufthansa 

According to Lufthansa Group -- which is responsible for airlines including Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and Air Dolomiti -- it has decided to reduce its short and long-haul schedule, after seeing a sharp decline in the Middle East, Africa, and Central and South America. 

"Overall, the Lufthansa Group's seating capacity on long-haul routes will be reduced by up to 90%. A total of 1,300 weekly connections were originally planned for summer 2020," the company said.

"Within Europe the flight schedule will also be further reduced. Starting tomorrow, around 20% of the originally planned seating capacity will still be offered. Originally, some 11,700 weekly short-haul flights were planned for summer 2020 with Lufthansa Group airlines."

In addition, Austrian Airlines will temporarily suspend all scheduled flights as of March 19. 

"Austrian Airlines is thus reacting to the entry restrictions imposed by many countries in response to the massive spread of the coronavirus," Lufthansa Group said.

Due to these changes, customers who hold tickets for cancelled or existing Lufthansa Group airline flights have the option to rebook their flight for free at a later date or for another destination. New flights need to be booked by June 1 for travel dates up to and including December 31. It applies for tickets booked up to and including March 12 and that have a confirmed travel date up to April 30. 

Aegean Airlines

Aegean Airlines said until the end of April, the "majority" of its international network will be gradually discontinued while the frequency of domestic flights will also be "significantly curtailed". 

The decision comes in addition to the airline instituting a zero rebooking fee policy for passengers who wish to book for later dates. 

Further, passengers whose flights have been cancelled but do not want to immediately rebook will receive a travel voucher, which will be valid for one year after it's issued and can be used on any route in Aegean and Olympic Iar's network.

Since the Italian government introduced a decree on March 10 that strictly bans all public gatherings and activities, which is due to be enforced until April 3, Italy's flagship airline said it has suspended any national and international service to and from Milan airport, but will continue to operate with reduced flights between Venice and Rome. 

The Italian airline added it has put in place a number of special flights to facilitate the return travel for Italian citizens and other travellers in countries where restrictive travel measures are in place. This includes flights to and from New York and London.

Passengers who purchased an issued ticket by April 3 for a flight departing until May 31 can request to change their booking for another trip before December 31, or a travel voucher, valid for one year. Meanwhile, those who have had their flights cancelled can opt for any of the said options or be refunded the price of the ticket, or the remaining value of the part of the trip, which has yet to be completed. 

Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA

Norwegian passengers affected by COVID-19 travel restrictions and who hold selected tickets that are booked up to and including March 22 are being offered waived rebooking fees. It's applicable to LowFare, LowFare+, and Premium tickets. 

It comes as the company grapples with the escalating COVID-19 situation. Norwegian revealed it will temporarily lay off more than 7,300 employees, which equates to 90% of the company's workforce, and will include pilots, cabin crew, and maintenance and administrative staff. 

Additionally, as of March 21 the company will primarily fly a reduced schedule domestically in Norway and between the Nordic capitals. The limited schedule is expected to remain in place until at least April 17, Norwegian said. 

"What our industry is now facing is unprecedented and critical as we are approaching a scenario where most of our airplanes will be temporarily grounded," said Norwegian CEO Jacob Schram.

"Several governments in Europe have already said that they will do everything they can to ensure that their airlines can continue to fly when society returns to normalcy."  

Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines said as it closely monitors the situation that arises from COVID-19, it is applying a zero change fee for international flights for tickets that were purchased before 31 March for flights up to December 31. New trips are required to be completed by 28 February 2021. 

The airline has also suspended all flights with departure points in Germany, France, Spain, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Sweden, Austria, and Holland until April 17.

"As the airline that always puts the travel security at the forefront, Turkish Airlines will continue to monitor the latest developments on the situation with the national and international health authorities and take appropriate precautions," it said.

The coronavirus pandemic is more serious for the airline industry than 9/11 and the financial crash and jobs will be lost, the boss of British Airways has warned.

Against the backdrop of the escalating outbreak , BA chief executive Alex Cruz said in a video message to staff: "It is a crisis of global proportions like no other we have known."

"Please do not underestimate the seriousness of this for our company," he added.

Mr Cruz also said jobs will be lost "perhaps for a short period, perhaps longer term" and that the company was in discussions with trade unions.

Aircraft would be grounded in a way that the airline has never had to do before, he said.

The hard-hitting message, headlined "the survival of British Airways", came as airlines across the world cancel flights and cut costs to deal cope with plunging demand, ever-tighter travel restrictions and worried travellers opting to stay at home.

The industry is bracing itself for further airline failures following the collapse of regional operator Flybe and Norwegian Air moved to slash 4,000 flights and temporarily lay off half of its workforce.

Mr de Juniac said: "We are asking all the governments who have put restrictions - and the US government particularly - to review the decision permanently to see whether they can alleviate or waive that decision - the sooner the better."

The IATA has already urged governments to consider extending credit, reduce costs and cutting taxes for struggling airlines.

Mr de Juniac, a former Air France-KLM group chief executive, said: "If the drop is as significant, as deep, as we are seeing now, and if it lasts for more than two or three months, we will see some difficulties among airlines.

"Some of them will probably have financial difficulty, it will probably lead to a further consolidation."

I filed a claim just before Christmas & received it a couple of weeks back. It will take as long as it takes, as long as it takes them to get to & work on your case. Is it urgent?

Rather than chase down an existing claim, start again as a new claim. I did this a couple of years ago after two months of crickets and tumbleweeds following the initial claim, and had a response and payment within 10 business days.

Flying first class is prohibitive for most of us! But many have found a way to hack their way into the most premium of cabins using points and miles.

Some tickets can be booked for as low as $200, whilst others are as high as $70,000. Some give you a cramped seat and a plastic tray, while others give you a full bed, seperate chair, and some of the best food and drink in the world. The latter aren't just about transporting you from one place to the next; they offer an experience that redefines what it means to fly, a modern-day glimpse into the golden age of air travel.

The most expensive ticket in the world

According to research from Go Banking Rates , the world's most expensive tickets can be found at The Residence by Etihad Airways, arguably the most luxurious commercial flight experience available. This service is available exclusively on its A380 aircraft. The suite features a three-room suite with a bedroom, a living room, and a private bathroom with a shower. The astronomical cost? Depending on the route, expect to pay between $30,000 and $66,000 for a one-way ticket. The level of service provided is akin to that of a private jet.

The experience in The Etihad Residence far surpasses what is ordinarily available in first class (considering that too is available on Etihad's A380's). Passengers receive the undivided attention of a butler trained at the prestigious Savoy Butler Academy in London, who takes care of every need and is available throughout the flight.

Historical data from 2019 shows that one of the most expensive international flights was the Emirates route from Los Angeles to Dubai, where the average price for a first-class ticket was approximately $30,000. The Dubai-based airline offers first class suites with virtual windows even when flying in a windowless suite, attentive service, on-demand dining and, just like Etihad, a chauffeur service upon arrival.

Short-haul awards

Short-haul tickets are arguably the best British Airways Avios redemptions. They start at just 4,750 Avios plus 17.50 British pounds (about $22) for an off-peak award flight 650 miles or less in distance operated by British Airways. One example would be a flight between London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR) and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS).

Since British Airways has a distance-based award chart and American Airlines and Alaska Airlines are Oneworld partners , you can use Avios to book any American or Alaska flight with saver-level award availability.

Partner awards, including those operated by Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines, start at 6,000 Avios but exclude flights within North America. Meanwhile, partner flights in North America start at 7,500 Avios for flights 650 miles or less and get more expensive for longer flights.

Booking short-haul flights with British Airways can be a great deal, even if you’re booking flights in North America on American or Alaska. A flight from New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD) clocks in at 733 miles, meaning you need 9,000 Avios one-way in economy class. This is often cheaper than you’ll pay to book the same flight with American’s AAdvantage program.

Thanks to the British Airways Reward Flight Saver offer , Executive Club members also have the option to choose to pay more Avios to reduce the (already reasonable) fees and taxes, down to just 62 cents per flight.

Island-hop through the Caribbean

You can use Avios to fly American Airlines to the Caribbean, starting from just 7,500 Avios each way, as mentioned above. But here is a neat trick to experiencing more of the Caribbean once you are there.

While flights between islands in this region can be expensive, British Airways operates several fifth-freedom routes where, for example, a BA flight originating in London will fly from Antigua’s V.C. Bird International Airport (ANU) to St Kitt’s Robert L. Bradshaw Airport (SKB) several times per week.

You can book just the short hop between the islands, and British Airways prices these short flights in the same way as its European short-haul flights. Using the Reward Flight Saver offer , redemptions start from just 4,750 Avios each way plus 17.50 British pounds (about $22) on off-peak dates. Award availability is usually outstanding on these fifth-freedom flights as many passengers disembark at the first stop, leaving plenty of empty seats for the second, short leg.

If you can’t decide between two islands in this beautiful part of the world, consider using Avios to cheaply hop between both.

Domestic business class on American

Though American Airlines names its domestic premium-class cabin “first class,” you can redeem Avios for this product at business-level rates.

The real kicker is that American Airlines regularly flies internationally configured wide-body aircraft on domestic routes , including 777s and 787s. For example, AA’s flagship 777-300ER operates some flights between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Miami International Airport (MIA), a 1,089-mile journey. You could book a business-class award on this flight for only 16,500 Avios, which is a great deal.

West Coast to Hawaii

Since we’re on the subject of American Airlines, another sweet spot you’ll find with Avios is the ability to fly from major West Coast cities to the Hawaiian Islands for just 13,000 Avios each way, thanks to the Avios distance-based chart. That beats the award rate for all the U.S. airlines, and there’s no close-in booking fee either.

But in this case, it’s not just about American’s route network. Alaska Airlines is also a British Airways partner, which means you have access to Alaska’s flights to Hawaii, though you’ll need to call to book Alaska flights with Avios since they aren’t searchable on ba.com. That opens up routes that AA doesn’t serve but Alaska does, such as Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC) to Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to Maui’s Kahului Airport (OGG).

So if you live almost anywhere on the West Coast — or can easily position there — Avios can be your friend to Hawaii.

Aer Lingus at off-peak prices

If you can travel during off-peak dates — which cover roughly eight months of the year — you can fly to Dublin from a handful of U.S. cities, including as far west as Chicago. This award will set you back just 26,000 Avios round-trip in economy or as low as 50,000 one-way in business class .

And suppose you live in the South in a city like Orlando or Miami, or the West in Los Angeles or San Francisco. In that case, the price only increases to 32,500 Avios round-trip in economy and 62,500 one-way in business, which is still a great deal considering how long these flights are.

You also won’t be charged fuel surcharges when redeeming British Airways Avios for Aer Lingus flights.

How to earn Avios

The easiest way to earn a meaningful number of Avios for everyday spending is by applying for the  British Airways Visa Signature Card .

Since British Airways insists on tacking huge surcharges onto its award tickets , using Avios for transatlantic flights on the carrier itself usually doesn’t make much sense. British Airways adds direct flights to London from San Diego International Airport

British Airways will increase the frequency of flights between San Diego and London from one flight per day to two, it was announced Tuesday.

Since San Diego International Airport first started offering the flights in 2011, British Airways has served about 2 million passengers traveling between San Diego and Europe, according to the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. The market for the flight has grown 50% from 2019-23, the agency said.

While London is the final destination for around 60% of the passengers flying this route, the other 40% connect to other cities, including Edinburgh, Dublin, Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, Cairo, Rome and Mumbai, airport authority officials said.

"We are looking forward to giving passengers on both sides of the Atlantic more options to fly nonstop between San Diego and Europe, while providing the same comfort and convenience of the popular route with British Airways that we already offer," said Kimberly Becker, president and CEO of the airport authority.

SAN added the new flight on Saturday. It is seasonal and will end Oct. 25.

"We are delighted to launch this second daily flight from San Diego, further supporting the growth of business and leisure travel in the city and demonstrating our commitment to the region," said Neil Chernoff, British Airways' chief planning and strategy officer.

According to the airport authority, the flights will: arrive in San Diego from London at 6:10 p.m. and depart San Diego for London at 8 p.m.; and arrive in San Diego at 3:25 p.m. and depart for London at 5:15 p.m.

Etihad Airways has finally reintroduced its beloved Airbus A380 superjumbo on flights to the US after years of uncertainty.

Purchased as an ultra-long-haul workhorse to connect its Abu Dhabi hub with far-away international destinations, the A380 first flew to New York in 2015 but left when the pandemic halted travel in 2020.

The COVID-19 crisis exacerbated already growing problems with fuel-hungry, quad-engine planes , prompting Etihad to consider retiring the jet. Other carriers like Air France and Thai Airways had already sent their A380s to the boneyard.

Etihad didn't follow through, however, instead deciding to re-launch the plane on flights to London last summer due to strong post-pandemic demand.

The airline has since moved one of those A380 flight to New York to up capacity at JFK — competing with rival five-star carrier Emirates' luxe A380 superjumbo already flying to the airport.

Here's what passengers can expect when flying Etihad in economy, business, first class, and its three-room "The Residence" suite.

Etihad's first A380 flight to the US since 2020 landed just after 10 a.m. on Monday after trekking more than 14 hours from Abu Dhabi.

The famous double-decker left Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport at about 3:20 a.m. local time and landed at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport just after 10 a.m. ET, according to FlightAware .

The plane is one of four A380s active in Etihad's fleet, each featuring dual-level cabin with economy, business, and first class seats.

The A380 replaced one of the Boeing 787 Dreamliners that previously flew the Abu Dhabi-New York route, leaving one Dreamliner and the superjumbo flying the two daily frequencies.

If it needs even more capacity, Etihad has another six A380s on "reserve," CRO Arik De told Business Insider in December when the NYC route was first announced.

The most basic offering on Etihad's A380 is economy, featuring the typical inflight amenities like entertainment, food, and reclining seats.

Etihad's 415-seat economy cabin is located on the lower level of the mammoth superjumbo, and the nice finishings like a cupholder and a touchscreen remote highlight its five-star status.

Coach comes with a winged headrest and a tray table, as well as a seatback pocket, 17.5 inches of seat width, and 31 inches of pitch — putting its legroom on par with the likes of Delta Air Lines and British Airways, according to SeatGuru .

Customers can pay for an economy upgrade, like seats with extra legroom, ones that are more kid-friendly, or seats that are "neighbor-free."

"Economy Space" seats offer five more inches of pitch than the regular coach seats. The bulkhead is in the first row of the cabin and won't have a row in front.

Neighbor-free seating is similar to Lufthansa's option , which guarantees the adjacent seat will be empty — essentially a 2-in-1-type booking.

Notably, Etihad does not have a premium-economy cabin like its UAE counterpart Emirates. Economy Space is as close as it gets.

Former CEO Tony Douglas said at its launch that Etihad has not added premium economy because it wants simplicity.

"We listen to our guests, and space is what they tell us that they really want," he told Executive Traveller in 2022. "But what we haven't done is put in a lot of cost and unnecessary complexity."

Etihad's upper deck is where the luxury is — and where the airline makes its money.

The second level of the A380 hosts Etihad's most premium cabins. There are 70 lie-flat business class seats, nine fully enclosed first class "apartments," and the one-of-a-kind "The Residence" suite.

Filling up its expensive upper deck on every flight is essential in making the gas-gusting A380 profitable — meaning it has to have an attractive product to compete with the other five-star carriers also serving New York.

Business class offers the typical luxuries like aisle access, plenty of storage, and a touchscreen television with a connected remote.

Customers can expect the common bells and whistles of business class plus a few special perks, but it's not cheap.

Flights for mid-July in A380 business class between New York and Abu Dhabi on Etihad's website show fares starting at about $4,000 each way.

The premium cabin also offers WiFi access, power ports, an amenity kit, window shades, and a pillow and blanket for sleeping.

There is no sliding door on Etihad, as seen in business class cabins in Qatar or Japan's All Nippon Airways, but there is a partition between the pair of seats in the center section for privacy.

Customers can also enjoy an 'anytime' dining menu that lets people eat on their own schedule.

The flexible dining plan can be useful on some early-morning or late-night flights, like Etihad's New York-bound A380 departure that leaves Abu Dhabi at around 3 a.m.

First class sits at the front of the upper deck and includes nine 'apartments.'

Carriers like Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Emirates have added grandiose first-class suites to their A380s as well, thanks to the mammoth size of the jet.

The apartments are like mini hotel rooms with sliding doors that come complete with a separate armchair and bed — similar to Singapore.

Singapore has a similar setup in its A380 first class , but the airline does not fly the superjumbo to JFK anymore.

Some cabins can be combined into one for two people to share, and the television swivels so it can be used from either the chair or the bed.

The bed stretches nearly seven feet, so it'll be long enough for even the tallest travelers — and a convenient remote allows passengers to control the far-away television when lying down.

Also available to first-class flyers is fine dining, WiFi, power, storage, a luxe lavatory, and a standing shower.

First-class meals include high-dollar Champagnes, wines, steaks, and other gourmet food.

The shower is rare to see on airlines because of the costly extra weight of carrying the water.

Emirates has its own shower spa onboard its Airbus A380s , while Singapore does not.

The latter has installed two giant lavatories with separate vanities in its upper deck first class.

Those with a first-class ticket can upgrade to Etihad's crown jewel, called The Residence, which is exclusive to its A380.

The Residence is an actual flying hotel room as it is the only three-room suite onboard a commercial jetliner. It is considered the cream of the crop for long-haul flying and goes beyond the typical first class.

"We had our first bookings within minutes of the announcement that the A380 was coming to New York," De told BI in December. "It's a famous experience, and there are plenty of people out there who want to sample it, either as a dream one-off or as part of their overall travel mix."

The completely private suite features a living room, a bedroom, and an ensuite bathroom with shower.

The 125-square-foot space is designed to accommodate up to two people thanks to the double couch and bed.

It's about as close as possible to flying on a private jet without the six-figure price tag. At launch, the route between NYC and Abu Dhabi cost $32,000 each way for either single or double occupancy, according to Etihad , but that has varied over the years.

It's nicer (and bigger) than some New York City apartments — and deep-pocketed travelers are willing to pay thousands for the sky penthouse.

Looking on Etihad's website in December for a flight between New York and Abu Dhabi for mid-May, the A380 apartments were priced between roughly $9,000 and $10,000 each way, with another $3,000 per leg on top for the Residence, totaling about $24,000 .

Searching again on Monday, it appears the Residence is already booked up on most days for May, as it cannot be added to first-class bookings . Apartments are going for between $5,000 and $8,000 now each way.

One thing Etihad keeps equal across all classes is a prayer room, with one located in each cabin.

SeatGuru shows a prayer room toward the front of the economy cabin, in the middle of business class, and right behind the last row of first. A curtain adds privacy.

Middle Eastern competitor Saudia also has a prayer room onboard its widebody planes.

Meanwhile, exclusive to just business and first class is access to an onboard bar and lounge.

The exclusive space sits on the upper deck between the two premium cabins and is a place to socialize, work, and stretch your legs.

The sitting area has a coffee table and television, while a bar is available with drinks and snacks.

Emirates and Qatar also offer a similar bar for premium passengers flying on their A380s.

Premium passengers can also enjoy perks like chauffeur service in Abu Dhabi and express airport check-in and lounge access before flying.

Business and first-class passengers can access luxe airport lounges in other cities outside Abu Dhabi, including in New York-JFK.

Etihad's return to NYC signals confidence in the A380 and its niche viability within the airline's strong hub-and-spoke network.

While many carriers have turned a cheek to the A380 due to high operating costs, Emirates, Singapore, Qatar, and Etihad, as well as a handful of other Asian and European airlines, all continue to fly the A380.

"We are entering a new phase of sustainable growth to meet the demands of our customers, and the A380 is the right aircraft to meet capacity demands on very select routes," De told BI. "We brought it back on our London services earlier this year, and saw tremendous commercial success, with guests loving the experience."
