Review: Star Trek

Lately, anything Star Trek related has been mired in over 40 years of canon, with fans shrieking every time something doesn\'t quite match the established narrative. Thankfully, with J.J Abrams taking on Gene Roddenberry\'s baby, there\'s a few twists and turns that not only give him the freedom to do whatever the heck he wants without worrying about the fans, but he also delivers a Trek film that actually delivers fun, thrills, excitement, and a nice wink-and-nod to the original cast.

When rogue Romulan Nero (Eric Bana) emerges from a space anomoly and destroys the U.S.S. Kelvin (helmed for a few short minutes by George Kirk), he changes the direction of history. His son, James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) grows up to be a bit of a rebellious farm boy, stealing his stepfather\'s car, hitting on anything with two breasts (in this case Uhura, played by Zoe Saldana), and eventually getting into bar fights. After one such brawl, Captain Pike (Bruce Greenwood) tries to convince Kirk to get some order in his life, and join Starfleet - since he has the capability to be a great leader like his father. Meanwhile on Vulcan, the half-human, half-vulcan Spock (Zachary Quinto) is trying to keep his emotions in check. His vulcan father (Ben Cross) tries to explain how logic essentially led him to marry a human (Winona Ryder), but the racism he encounters from "pure" vulcans only further pushes Spock to join Starfleet.

Soon everyone is in Starfleet, and when Kirk is accused of cheating to beat a no-win scenario test (designed by Spock) the two immediately have resentment towards each other. But there\'s a distress call from Vulcan, and Kirk\'s good friend, the bitter Dr. Leonard McCoy (Karl Urband), manages to get him on board the new U.S.S. Enterprise, commanded by Captain Pike. There we meet Sulu (John Cho) and Chekov (Anton Yelchin). When it turns out that the situation at Vulcan is more complicated than anyone envisioned, and Pike is captured by Nero, Kirk tries to take charge, but Spock is the one in command.

There\'s a lot more going on than what I\'ve talked about here, but I really don\'t want to give any more away. The tagline that "this isn\'t your father\'s Star Trek" is quite accurate. J.J. Abrams shot the film for a modern audience, and Transformers scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman infuse the script with humor, action, and nice dialog winks to classic character moments. The action sequences are really well done, and the visual effects are phenomenal. The acting isn\'t quite the best, but Karl Urband steals the show, and Zachary Quinto is perfect as a younger Spock. Simon Pegg shows up as Scotty, but seems a bit too hammy for the role.

Abrams\' regular composer Michael Giacchino delivers a score that works for the film, but the main theme is a bit repetitive and it doesn\'t quite reach the levels that Jerry Goldsmith had achieved for the Trek series. Star Trek might have a few small plot holes here or there, but it\'s set up in such a way that it works effectively as a prequel, and as mentioned earlier, there\'s a nice twist that allows them to respect the fans but go in their own direction. It remains to be seen whether this film will breathe new life to the franchise, but it certainly is one hell of a ride.

Star Trek (Music From the Motion Picture)

The theme from the original Star Trek television series, which started airing in 1966, was written by the veteran orchestrator and composer Alexander Courage, and the show’s creator, Gene Roddenberry, and is as instantly identifiable as Spock’s pointy ears. The excellent composer Michael Giacchino provides the score here for yet another descendent of the much-loved sci-fi show: the 2009 feature, Star Trek, directed by J.J. Abrams. (The pair had previously collaborated on television and film projects including Alias, Lost, Mission: Impossible III, and Cloverfield.) From the soundtrack’s opening moments, Giacchino shows he’s a welcome addition to the roster of composers who have contributed to Star Trek’s musical legacy. The album begins with a French horn playing the new film’s main theme, moves on to the explosive “Nailin’ the Kelvin,” then settles into the serene, yet dramatic, “Labor of Love.” “Nero Death Experience” (Giacchino loves punning titles) effectively utilizes a large chorus, blasts of brass, and other elements, and “Ending Credits” nicely incorporates both the original TV theme and Giacchino’s musical material.

New Images Four new images for Star Trek have been released by Paramount Internation. to a number of sites overseas, giving us new looks at Kirk, Spock and Scotty. Click images to see bigger ones at DVD-Forum.at .

…and here’s a new IMAX poster for the film (which is just a riff on the regular US poster).

And finally, Paramount has updated their "Star Trek: The Enterprise Project" website with three new models.  Click the image below to visit the site, which will continue to be updated with new ships.

UPDATE: AMC Gift Card Promo Shortly after this article went up, Paramount sent out a new video promo for AMC giftcards . The promo is almost entirely previously seen stuff, but there are brief glimpses of a bit more footage from some moments.

For those who have seen the movie, which font did they end up using in the credits? Classic Trek, or the font seen in the international posters?

Is that shuttle named “Moore”? If it is…nice!

Haha dig the yellow

Loving that first shot!

I can’t wait to listen to the great Giacchino! This gonna be amazing!

3rd’ Can’t wait! The excitement is building.

It appears that the first enterprise is painted like it will appear in the movie.

Oh boy, that track list is very revealing. Didn’t know I was in for some minor music spoilers. Is that an image of Spock and Uhura? Hmmm…. interesting.

The end credits font, as far as i could tell from the footage of Nimoy and writers posted on here earlier this week, is something called Bank Gothic. Its the same font used for the titles on “24” and many others.

I like it. The actual TOS font is neat and all, but damned hard to read.

Oof. Who’s idea was it to make a track list full of puns and clumsy cultural references?

Thanks for the response. What I meant to ask though was what font they ended up using for the main “STAR TREK” at the beginning of the movie.

Enterprise 10: Who Enterprises the Enterprise?

I can’t wait to buy the soundtrack, I love some of the track names. I think I like the IMAX Star Trek poster better. Love the new shots, as well. This is going to be the best movie EVER.

11. Giacchino does that quite often. It’s cheesy, but it’s just titles.

3rd movie shot above with Spock and Uhura… what is the shuttles name?

wow, more cool stuff. It’s like Christmas!

Hahha A little light shed on what Quinto said about how Spock “Already HAS Uhura” in that one pic. I don’t know the actual episodes, but I do remember Uhura flirting with Spock a number of times. I think what he means by that is she probably has a huge crush on him, and he doesn’t reciprocate the way she wants. But she does get that hug from him, which for Spock is a huge step!

Notice the asterisks behind the last two track titles? Sure as hell this means “contains ‘Theme from Star Trek’ composed by Alexander Courage”. :)

Please trekmovie.com no more spoilers from now on till May 8th, it’s really hard to not being able to come here being a Star Trek fan.

Nero fiddles, Narada burns

For anyone familiar with history, you would know Nero is based on Emperor Nero of the Roman Empire. And if you know a lot about him, then it will make sense to you that whoever came up with this title is a genius.

After clicking on that thing it makes me think and say for the first time..”.those is some big nacelles”.

#20 – Yes, thanks for that! Fascinating. I’m interested to explore this

#15 – Indeed! Looks like there’s enough space between the M and the O to fit another letter…

Nice shot of Kirk and Spock.

OMG. Sorry, but the names of the the tracks are horrible. Nice to meld you?? Oh, well, they do reveal a lot of spoilers. Which makes me happy. Idont think I can wait one more month. And the new images are awesome. Kirk and Spock, woo-hoo! And Uhura! And Scotty!! I love Pegg as Scotty, his accent’s hilarious. Perfect. Just perfect.

I don’t care for the regular U.S. release poster, but that black in the IMAX poster really changes things and I like that one alot. Might have to shell out the $$$ for that one.

Nice to meld you?

That’s a little cheesy.

I hope he writes his music better than he writes his titles.

26 – These are more groad-inducing that Lost or M:I:III track listings.

Kind of typical for Giacchino. :-)

26: “I hope he writes his music better than he writes his titles.”

Typically, he does. His Incredibles soundtrack is, well, incredible.

Worst. Soundtrack titles. EVER.

I’m sure the music will be wonderful, but Jesus H. Christopher Pike, those track titles sound like they belong to a TREK spoof, a la, GALAXY QUEST. “Nailin’ the Kelvin?” “Nero Sighted??” “Nice to Meld You???” “Does It Stll McFly?!?!??!”

Egads, Michael.

Like the Bettie Page on Enterprise #10!

I agree the nacells are large but I like this design. I notice from the clips that you really will be able to appreciate the size of the big E.

“Hella”?

Oh, my Lord. I despise that word. I think I’ll be renaming some tracks in iTunes :D

2. MvRojo – April 9, 2009 Is that shuttle named “Moore”? If it is
nice!

Maybe I should know, but, what significance would the name “Moore” have?

28. Chris Basken

Oh, I know he does. I have heard his work before. As a musician and someone who knows what it takes to write a soundtrack, I have nothing but admiration for his work. I think what I meant to say was, I hope the cheesiness of these titles doesn’t translate into the music for this film. Choosing song titles is very difficult and something I spend lots of time pondering, and like I said, his title, “Nero fiddles, Narada burns” is brilliant. But the rest is a little silly, that’s all. To be honest, I have no worries whatsoever that he has created an exemplary soundtrack.

I don’t know I still like my version of the soundtrack cover better….

At least I was close when I posted it a couple weeks ago….

Here it is for your consideration

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b158/pelcj/soundtrackcover.jpg

Why is no one asking stuff about the music score?? I want to know if Jerry Goldsmith’s theme is in it !?!?

34. Adam E – April 9, 2009

“2. MvRojo – April 9, 2009 Is that shuttle named “Moore”? If it is
nice!

Maybe I should know, but, what significance would the name “Moore” have?”

Trek and Galactica writer Ron Moore.

Ron Moore- writer of TNG, DS9, one episode of VOY, and then show runner of Roswell Season 2, then creator/showrunner of Battlestar Galactica.

Ah yes, Thanks guys!

I can barely wait to hear the soundtrack. I’m always almost as excited about the score to a movie as about the movie itself.

The titles of music have SPOILERS. (WARRY)

#20…i caught it LOL… maybe next film they could get an alternate Nero to go back in time to ancient Rome and attempt to save the Roman Empire by doing something akin to what Ra did in the original Stargate movie…after its revealed that Romulans founded The Roman Empire…LOL

37., I’m guessing that if tracks 14 and 15 are listed with an asterisk, it refers to inclusion of other composer’s music, and we’ll see what those references are in the full liner notes. My take is that tracks 14 and 15 will use parts of the Alexander Courage theme, and with the time of track 14 being so short (and so “boldy” named) it’s probably the horn fanfare from TOS that’s frequently quoted in all the movies. I doubt there would be references to Goldsmith’s music here.

#15 M O O R E

It’s like I have previously stated…. If the music is even close to his work on the Medal of Honor series of games….It will be an absolute masterpiece. I personally cannot wait to hear it.

As much as I want to hear Giacchino’s score i REALLY want to hear that tune by Cyrano Jones! :D

#45 – Moore… Sounds reasonable.

#34 – Significance of MOORE? Ronald D. ? I’m from the crowd that believes he saved Star Trek at a point, and then gave Star Trek so much to be proud of for many years more.

Wow, once again soundtrack titles have to be the most crappiest things ever. Yuck.

you people are complete morons.

you REALLY don’t get the point, do you? His titles are SUPPOSED to be cheesy! that’s his style. he KNOWS they’re cheesy.

this reminds me of the time i tried to watch monty python and the holy grail with my grandfather. “a killer rabbit? why, boy, that just doesn’t make any sense! there’s no such thing as a killer rabbit! oh… wait… a holy HAND GERNADE?! why, that’s just ridiculous!”

*ahem* DUUUUUR!

J.j. abrams' star trek joke would have made kirk’s strange new worlds car chase perfect.

Suits: L.A.’s First Reactions Confirm The Spinoff Is Bringing Back One Of Suits’ Greatest Strengths

Chicago pd season 11 finale synopsis sets the stage for upton's exit, who is lily in ncis' season 21 finale parker’s mystery girl explained & what she means for season 22.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 3 - "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow"

Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) has a car chase in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 3, and the only thing that could have made it better would be incorporating a J.J. Abrams joke from Star Trek 2009. Kirk comes from an alternate reality in "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow," and he and Lieutenant La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) are whisked away to 21st-century Toronto to stop an attack that will irrevocably alter the timeline.

Kirk and La'an fall for each other during their time travel mission in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . Because this version of Captain Kirk didn't grow up on Earth, which in his reality is a hostile battleground resulting from a war with the Romulans, James is fascinated by the sights, food, and luxuries of modern-day Toronto. But when a bridge is blown up by time-traveling Romulan operatives, Kirk and La'an steal a red Dodge Challenger Hellcat and chase after who they believe are the culprits. Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 3 kicks into overdrive at this point, complete with a contemporary rock song: "Modern Art" by The Black Lips.

Kirk's Strange New Worlds Car Chase Should Have Played "Sabotage"

Kirk and La'an's Star Trek: Strange New Worlds car chase was a jolt of adrenaline, but an even better song to play than "Modern Art" would have been the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage." J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2009 reboot movie used "Sabotage" early in the film when a young Jim Kirk (Jimmy Bennett) steals his stepfather's convertible and goes for a joyride in Iowa. "Sabotage" got a reprise in Star Trek Beyond when the crew of the USS Enterprise, commandeering the USS Franklin, escape the planet Altamid and use the Beastie Boys song as a soundtrack to battle the Swarm. Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) smiles and approves, "It's a good choice."

If Strange New Worlds also used "Sabotage," it would have been a sly wink to J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies. Besides being a fun Easter egg, "Sabotage" could have also communicated the idea that the two alternate reality versions of Kirk have a common thread, even if Paul Wesley's Kirk didn't grow up on Earth like Chris Pine's Kirk did. "Modern Art" by The Black Lips also wasn't necessarily playing on the radio of Kirk's stolen car; the song was for the benefit of the audience and to add extra oomph to the car chase. "Modern Art" was a cool track nonetheless, but "Sabotage" would have been a rare bridge and acknowledgment of Abrams' Kelvin Timeline films and Star Trek on Paramount+.

Strange New Worlds Was One Of Kirk's Best Time Travel Episodes

Captain Kirk has taken center stage in some of the greatest Star Trek time travel tales, and Strange New Worlds ' "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" instantly joins the top of the list. Kirk's tragic time travel mission with La'an Noonien-Singh is an ingenious and heartbreaking inversion of Star Trek: The Original Series classic, "The City on the Edge of Forever," but with James in the role of the doomed Edith Keeler (Joan Collins). But before Kirk is murdered by the Romulan operative Sera (Adelaide Kane), James is the picture of charm and good humor as he enjoys himself in Toronto and gets La'an to come out of her shell.

Strange New Worlds' "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" ranks with the aforementioned "City on the Edge of Forever" and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home , two of William Shatner's Kirk's best time travel escapades. "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" also resets Kirk as a romantic hero since Chris Pine's Captain Kirk didn't really have a love story in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movie trilogy. The Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" would have been a terrific in-joke for fans, but its absence certainly didn't impact the magic of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 streams Thursdays on Paramount+.

Star Trek' s 2009 Reboot Changed Everything

J.j. abrams and company didn't just revive star trek, they steered the franchise—and hollywood—in a new direction..

Image for article titled Star Trek's 2009 Reboot Changed Everything

Star Trek has been an important fixture of sci-fi TV for decades, and alongside its continued existence, movies have helped further flesh out the characters. But in both the movies and TV, the early 2000s weren’t kind to the franchise: 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis was a critical and commercial disaster, and Star Trek: Enterprise had a respectable four-season run, but the shortest of the shows since the original series. Change was in order, and it was eventually decided that would take the form of a reboot that took everyone by surprise.

Star Trek— that is, the reboot film released May 8, 2009—is one of those movies that showed up at just the right moment. At the time, movies based on old TV shows like Starsky & Hutch and Charlie’s Angels had found commercial successes, which gave this reboot some cultural context. It also helped that it was being helmed by a trio of filmmakers who knew how to make hits: J.J. Abrams was still riding the high off directing Mission: Impossible 3 (speaking of movies based on old TV shows) , along with the almost-ended Lost and the still young Fringe . Writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman had written Mission and were further on Paramount’s good side with the first Transformers movie. If there was anyone who could make a new Star Trek flick that’d get anyone’s attention, for better or worse, it’d be these guys.

It really can’t be understated how much Paramount was banking on this new Star Trek being a hit back then. The studio wanted, more than anything, to get audiences to care about Star Trek again, and how best to do that in the 2000s? By hyping up its action scenes and Kirk being quite the ladies man. That didn’t entirely go over well, much like Abrams’ comments that the movie would mainly be for non-Trekkies. Even with that, the movie couldn’t help but look interesting. Those trailers didn’t tell you a dang thing about its actual plot, but they had good vibes, and made you want to see how the Enterprise crew would come to be the adventurers our parents and grandparents had fallen in love with back in their day.

And fall in love, people did: the reboot movie was met with critical acclaim and later four Academy Award nominations, ultimately winning one for Best Makeup and being the only Trek movie to net an Oscar. Despite mixed reactions on the movie splitting off into its own timeline, critics and audiences loved the young cast’s takes on the original characters—especially Zachary Quinto’s Spock and Zoe Saldana’s Uhura—and their chemistry. With a $385.7 million box office, Star Trek succeeded in making people care about the franchise once more. But its high ended up coming down quicker than you’d think, and in the years since, the movies have been marooned in space.

A few years later, 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness left an odd taste in audiences’ mouths. It still made money, but something about it felt off: maybe it was how it did a more convoluted retelling of Wrath of Khan, or maybe it can be owed to its very weird B-plot with 9/11 parallels that feel like they belong in a completely different movie (or another franchise entirely). Star Trek Beyond , conversely, went for a considerably simpler approach and just functioned like a regular episode of the show. That energy, combined with a still- incredible needle drop , was the right move, even if the film wasn’t a smash hit when it dropped in 2016. Paramount’s spent years trying to get a fourth movie off the ground since then, and it’s anyone’s guess as to if it’ll actually happen.

Things have gone much better over in TV land: Star Trek: Discovery and Lower Decks , a pair of well-liked shows, are both ending after their respective fifth seasons—a run that feels like a miracle these days. Star Trek: Picard gave Next Generation fans the legacy sequel they’d been wanting for years, and Star Trek: Prodigy , despite how messily its schedule was handled, brought younger audiences into the fold. It’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds that’ll be spearheading future TV plans, which currently include a Starfleet Academy show and the Paramount+ film focused on Michelle Yeoh’s Discovery character Phillipa Georgiou .

Star Trek 2009 's biggest aftershock came outside of its franchise with the big reboot and legacy sequel boom of the 2010s. New takes on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, RoboCop , and Evil Dead were born from this movie’s success, even if it was just to revitalize its own series. Abrams, Orci, and Kurtzman went on to become even bigger names in Hollywood: the former famously went on to revive Star Wars for the big screen, and is a producing powerhouse. Orci and Kurtzman went on to be involved with the Amazing Spider-Man movies, and create or executive produce shows like Sleepy Hollow and Fringe . When the duo separated, Kurtzman—following his directorial debut The Mummy , which failed to launch Universal’s Dark Universe—effectively became Star Trek’s equivalent to Kevin Feige. Orci, last we heard, was writing a Spider-Man adjacent movie for Sony that’s gone quiet in the years since its announcement.

All-in-all, Star Trek was a game-changer, and for better or worse, you don’t get our current movie landscape without it. With how big the franchise is right now, it’s understandable why Paramount’s wanted so much to get a fourth film off the ground—but is it possible by this point? That hypothetical (and surprising ) Star Trek 4 has been waylaid by shifting creatives for years, to the point you feel like someone should finally make the call to pull the plug. Not only did Beyond give the Kelvin universe its cleanest end after the passings of Anton Yelchin and Leonard Nimoy, fourth movies can sometimes be dicey, especially when their franchise wasn’t really built with it in mind. And it’s anyone’s guess as to if a Starfleet prequel set in the same timeline will rejuvenate it for more films or just be a small detour before we head back to Prime time.

In 2022, Chris Pine said the best way forward for Star Trek movies may require they be less bombastic, more geared toward fans, and cost less to make. It’s an easy sentiment to get behind, and that may really only be possible by junking Trek 4 and doing it with another movie. The Enterprise of the Kelvinverse had a good run, and after 15 years, it’s more than fine to boldly go in a new direction.
