SHSU: A Brief History

Austin College initially occupied the current site of Sam Houston State University. In 1876 it was moved to Sherman, Texas, but Austin Hall , which was dedicated in 1851 with Texas hero Sam Houston in attendance, is now the university's architectural symbol.

First used in October, 1852, Austin Hall is the oldest continuously-used state-owned higher education facility west of the Mississippi.

After it was used as a Methodist school for boys, Austin Hall was acquired in 1879 by a group of Huntsville citizens. They had first failed to have their city designated as the Texas state capital, but settled instead for the first teacher-training school in the southwestern United States. Establishment of Sam Houston Normal Institute was authorized by Texas Gov. Oran M. Roberts on April 21, 1879 (San Jacinto Day).

On October 10 of that year the predecessor of Sam Houston State University opened. Its first president was Bernard Mallon , who died only 11 days after the school opened. He was succeeded by H. H. Smith , who served until 1881. The Institute's first catalogue, which was not published until after the close of the first academic year, listed a "Board of Instruction" that included: H. H. Smith, principal; Oscar H. Cooper, assistant; Mrs. Bernard Mallon, assistant; Mrs. J. R. Whiteside, assistant; and Mrs. A. A. Reynolds, music. Cooper was also listed as the librarian, and Mrs. Whiteside as secretary. That catalogue also listed the names of 109 students.

President H. Carr Pritchett's tenure (1891-1908) saw the continued expansion of the campus, including the addition of Peabody Library, and an enrollment increase to 529 by the time of his death in 1908.

During the 29 years of Harry F. Estill's presidency (1908-1937) Sam Houston Normal Institute continued to expand to meet the needs of a growing state. The curriculum was expanded to four years and the first baccalaureate degree awarded in 1919. In 1923 the name of the institution was changed to Sam Houston State Teachers College and two years later the college became a member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In 1936 graduate programs were offered for the first time, and the first dormitory for women, Belvin Hall, was built.

After Charles N. Shaver's five-year tenure, during which the first men's dormitory was built, Harmon L. Lowman served as president for 22 years. The campus expanded rapidly under Lowman, especially in the area of residence halls and instructional facilities, and by 1964 the enrollment exceeded 5,000.

In 1965, during the presidency of Arleigh B. Templeton (1965-1970), Sam Houston State Teachers College was renamed Sam Houston State College. In 1969 the school became Sam Houston State University. During Templeton's tenure the university enjoyed tremendous growth: the criminal justice program was developed, the Newton Gresham Library and several instructional facilities were added, and by the time of Templeton's resignation in 1970 enrollment had surpassed 8,500.

Elliott T. Bowers , who served as president from 1970-1989, directed development of the East Campus, which includes the University Theatre Center, Teacher Education Center, Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum, and George J. Beto Criminal Justice Center. Under the Campus Master Plan of 1982 other facilities were added: the Dan Rather Communications Building, Health/Kinesiology Building, Lee Drain Building, Fine Arts Building, and a new 13,000-seat stadium and field house (named the Elliott T. Bowers Stadium and Field House in honor of Dr. Bowers in 1989).

Under Martin J. Anisman (1989-1995) academic emphasis included increased admissions standards and creation of an Across the University Writing Program and a Learning Assistance Center. The Texas Research Institute for Environmental Studies (TRIES) was established and the Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas moved to the SHSU campus from Austin. The Katy and E. Don Walker, Sr. Education Center was built as an outgrowth of the General Sam Houston Bicentennial Birthday Celebration and the Sam South complex developed.

Bobby K. Marks served as interim president after the resignation of Anisman and was named the university's 11th president in June 1996. The major focus of his administration was the use of technology for instructional programs, student retention, fund raising and international activities. The esteem in which he was held was indicated by the naming of a street and building on the university campus in his honor and his being named president emeritus. He retired in August 2001, after 41 years as a faculty member and administrator.

James F. Gaertner served as the university's 12th president, taking over from Marks on August 21, 2001. Under Gaertner’s leadership, enrollment grew by 30 percent, the number of faculty increased by 41 percent and the university added 16 new academic programs. Other accomplishments include the achievement of a Carnegie Doctoral Research classification, placing SHSU in the top 7 percent of all institutions in the United States; the completion of nearly $280 million in construction projects; the initiation of the university’s first capital campaign in which more than $61 million in commitments were raised; the establishment of the Official Ring Ceremony, the President’s Speaker’s Series, and the nationally recognized Alcohol and Drug Abuse Initiative for students; a reorganization of existing university structure and the implementation of new programs and projects; and the establishment of over 40 articulation agreements with community colleges in Texas, making SHSU a leader in such agreements in the state. He retired in August 2010.

Dana L. Gibson took over as SHSU's 13th present, and first female president, on Sept. 1, 2010.

Having grown to a current enrollment of more than 17,214 students, Sam Houston State University offers an extensive range of bachelor's and master's degrees, doctor of philosophy degrees in criminal justice, forensic clinical psychology and counselor education, and education doctorates in educational leadership and reading. With its modern facilities, an inspired and capable administration, and a superior faculty, the university is embracing the challenges of a new century. With its namesake, its ties to Texas history and a record of many years of service to the people of the state, Sam Houston State University is truly "a great name in Texas education."

Guided Tours

Guided tours:.

Sam Houston Memorial Museum and Republic of Texas Presidential Library Logo

The Education Department offers in person tours on the lovely grounds of the Sam Houston Museum. Over the past year, we have experimented with giving tours in a different way than we have for the last several years and are moving away from doing our “traditional” rotation-based tours.

You’ll still get to interact with our knowledgeable interpreters dressed in 19th century clothing. You’ll still get to watch and participate in entertaining and educational demonstrations and hands on activities. The main difference is that we won’t be working on a rotation basis where each group goes to a station and 15 minutes later moves to the next one and so on. Rather, we will have our staff out on the grounds spread out between our historic homes and demonstration areas and each group will travel from spot to spot on your own timeline, taking in what interests each group the most. We have discovered that this style of tour works quite well and allows for the greatest amount of flexibility and interaction giving you more bang for your buck – and your time.

Demonstrations available for you to see will include: 19th century toys, hearth cooking, blackpowder, primitive fire starting, blacksmithing, spinning and fiber arts. Contrary to how we would previously schedule tours where there was a set fee per person and then a demonstration fee per demonstration – there is now a flat $4 fee per person and your visit will include at least two of the listed demonstrations. Picking which demonstrations you see can be up to the group leader and we will do everything possible to accommodate your request.

Now... I know that some of our long time, veteran teachers will be likely a bit worried over changing things up – after all… we’ve been doing this a long time! And if that’s the case, never fear – we will continue to offer our “standard” tours, which will operate on a rotating schedule if that’s what you would prefer. Just let us know when you schedule your visit if that is what you would like to do.

About the movie ... I’ve been recommending to our teachers for the last couple years to watch the movie that we’ve traditionally shown in our auditorium here – at school. It saves us considerable time on site and gives us more time to work with your group out on our historic grounds. I will continue to recommend this but if you would rather watch the video here on site we can do that – but be cognizant of the time we spend inside watching the video is time we won’t be spending outside seeing the history first hand.

To schedule a group visit or tour, please contact our Education Department who will be happy to coordinate your visit.

Types of Tours

With the new style of tours, it works best if you subdivide your group into smaller groups of 10-12 people prior to arriving at the museum. Your tour will include visits to the historic homes on the museum grounds (the Woodland Home and Steamboat House), the Main Museum, and a minimum of two demonstrations. Demonstrations available can include: hearth cooking, blackpowder, fire starting, 19th century toys, fiber arts and blacksmithing)

School tours are aimed at 4th and 7th grades, but all grades/ages are welcome.

The cost is $4.00 per guest with no charge for teachers. Plan to spend a minimum of 1.5 hours from start to finish of tour.

The Museum offers tours especially designed for seniors all year long. Wheelchair access is available for most, but not all, of the tour areas. There is walking required across gravel paths and uneven terrain, and in some areas, the ability to climb steps is required to see every part of the Museum. Our tour consists of a movie about Sam Houston, guided access to the Steamboat House where Sam Houston died, the family's Woodland Home, Sam Houston's Law Office, and Eliza's Kitchen before visiting the Main Memorial Museum. The cost is $4.00 per person.

If you are unable to visit the museum due to time or travel constraints, we are still capable of providing a quality experience for your group. Utilizing a combination of YouTube (for tours through our historic structures) and either Zoom or Google Meet (for live interaction) you are able to see much of the museum, and still have live access to one of our knowledgeable staff to talk about all things Sam Houston.

Cost of a virtual tour is $1 per person.

The Museum offers demonstrations on a rotating basis nearly all year long. There are Saturday demonstrations during the fall and spring, and then in the summer months we offer a series of different historical themed programs. Please visit the events section of our website for the Museum events calendar or our Museum Facebook page to find out what is taking place.

PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUPS TUESDAY– Texas RHP Charlie Hurley (3-0, 6.67) vs. SHSU LHP Gavi Coldiron (3-4, 5.52)

THE MATCHUP— The Longhorns are back home at UFCU Disch-Falk field to host Sam Houston for a midweek game. Texas leads the all-time series with the Bearkats, 83-19 and holds a 78-19 advantage in Austin. The Longhorns have won 10-straight in the series, with the last loss coming in 2015 in Austin.

A LOOK AT THE LONGHORNS— Texas heads into the week following a third-consecutive Big 12 Conference series win, sweeping a doubleheader at Oklahoma. The Longhorns are batting .293 with 102 doubles and a Big 12 leading 90 home runs, while the pitching staff has a 4.94 ERA with 366 strikeouts in 401.0 innings pitched. Jalin Flores is the leading hitter with a .365 batting average with 18 doubles and 15 homers, while Max Belyeu leads the team and Big 12 Conference with 16 homers. Jared Thomas is also batting .362 with 13 doubles, 13 homers and 13 stolen bases.

ONE-TWO PUNCH— Jared Thomas and Peyton Powell have been mainstays at the top of the Texas batting order this season. Thomas has a hit in 36 of the 45 games and has also scored at least one run in 30 of the 45 contests. In the 15 games that Thomas has not scored a run, the Longhorns have a 5-10 record. His on-base percentage of .454 from the leadoff spot is the best on the team. Powell has a hit in 37 of the 45 games and is third on the team with 38 RBI.

BOMB SQUAD— With 90 home runs this season, Texas has hit 309 bombs combined over the last three seasons. The Longhorns hit a program record 128 homers in 2022 and followed that up with the second-most ever at 91 in 2023. The next-most homers by Texas in a three-year stretch was 196 from 1986-88. The Longhorns have also hit more homers in the last three seasons than in the previous seven seasons combined, with 297 from 2015-21. Texas is currently on pace to hit 110 home runs during the 55-game regular season schedule. The Longhorns' 90 homers ranks eighth nationally this season.

MORE HOME RUN HISTORY— The Longhorns tied a Texas Baseball record with six home runs in two games last week, first against UTA on April 23 and at Oklahoma on April 28. There have now been just six times that a Texas team hit six homers in a game and the first since April 25, 1998 at Missouri. The Longhorns now have 25 multiple-homer games this season, including eight four-homer games and six three-homer games.

MAX POWER— Outfielder Max Belyeu is having a breakout sophomore season, launching 16 home runs this season. In the March 24 win over Baylor, Belyeu tied a program record by hitting three homers. The eighth Longhorn to go deep three times in a game, Belyeu hit two solo shots before launching a grand slam. Belyeu also has a pair of two-homer games this season against UTA on April 25 and at Oklahoma on April 28. The Aledo, Texas product has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week twice this season.

THE GRAND SLAM MAN— Dating back to the end of the last season, Jalin Flores hit three grand slams over a 12-game span. His first career grand slam was in the NCAA Regional Final last season against Miami to help Texas advance to the Super Regional. This season Flores hit a game-winning grand slam on Opening Day and then launched his second against St. John's on Feb. 27. Flores is not the only Longhorn to go deep with the bases loaded this season, as Rylan Galvan , Will Gasparino and Max Belyeu all have hit grand slams this season.

OWN THE DISCH— A large part of the Longhorns success under head coach David Pierce has come down to dominating at home. Since 2017 Texas has produced a 195-59 (.768) record at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Since the stadium opened in 1975, Texas has gone 1626-419-3 at home for a .795 winning percentage. The fan base has also done a great job of making the Disch a difficult place to play. With the exception of the 2021 season because of limited capacity due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Texas has led the Big 12 in attendance for 15-consecutive seasons. This season, the Longhorns are averaging 7,460 fans per game, the fifth-highest average attendance in the country.

FIFTIETH SEASON AT THE DISCH— Texas is in the midst of its 50th season at UFCU Disch-Falk Field after the facility opened in 1975. The first game at The Disch was played on Feb. 17, 1975 with the eventual National Champions sweeping a doubleheader of St. Mary's. Texas will officially celebrate 50 years of Disch-Falk Field and the 50th anniversary of the 1975 National Championship team during the 2025 season.

PRESEASON HONORS— Lebarron Johnson Jr. picked up plenty of preseason praise, being named Big 12 Preseason Pitcher of the Year as well as landing on the Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List. OF Porter Brown joined Johnson on the Preseason All-Big 12 team as well as picking up some Preseason All-America recognition. Freshman OF Will Gasparino was also named Big 12 Preseason Freshman of the Year.

PRESEASON PICKS— In a vote of the league's head coaches, Texas was selected to finish second in the Preseason Big 12 Baseball Coaches' Poll. The Longhorns sit behind preseason favorite TCU, who received 11 first place votes. Texas picked up the other two first place votes to finish second. Last season, Texas won the Big 12 regular season championship after being picked fourth in the preseason poll.

DRAFT WINS AND LOSSES— Texas lost five players to the 2023 MLB Draft but also got five key players back for the 2024 season. The Longhorns biggest losses in the draft were 4th round selection Dylan Campbell and sixth-rounder Lucas Gordon . OF Porter Brown and INF Peyton Powell were not selected though and will lead the offense this season, while Charlie Hurley , Lebarron Johnson Jr. and Tanner Witt are expected to play big roles on the mound. OF Will Gasparino making it to the Forty Acres was also a big win for the program.

HEAR ' EM— In partnership with Learfield IMG College, Texas games will be broadcast on the Longhorn Radio Network, primarily on AM 1300 The Zone. Craig Way handles primary play-by-play duties alongside Roger Wallace. This season fans will also hear analysis from Longhorn greats Keith Moreland, Ty Harrington and Nathan Thornhill throughout the season.

WATCH ' EM— Nearly all of Texas' home games will be broadcast on Longhorn Network this season. The team of Keith Moreland and Greg Swindell will return to the booth to call the action for 34 home games. The first two games of the TCU series, April 19-20 will be broadcast on ESPNU.

traDISCHion— Texas Baseball will honor its history throughout the 2024 season as part of the Saturday TraDISCHion series at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. For the third-consecutive season the Longhorns are celebrating past greats every Saturday (and a few Fridays) throughout the year. The 2024 TraDISCHion schedule: Feb. 17 vs. San Diego: LHP Richard Wortham (1973-76) Feb. 24 vs. Cal Poly: LHP Justin Simmons (2001-04) March 16 vs. Washington: RHP Beau Hale (1998-2000) March 23 vs. Baylor: LHP Austin Wood (2006-09) April 6 vs. BYU: 1B Danny Peoples (1994-96) April 20 vs. TCU: OF/LHP Dennis Cook (1984-85) May 4 vs. OSU: RHP Cole Green (2008-11)

Notebook: Texas Longhorns Breeze Past Sam Houston in Midweek Win

The Longhorns took care of business against the Bearkats in their final midweek contest.

  • Author: Connor Zimmerlee

Coming off a lengthy doubleheader against the Oklahoma Sooners in which they won both games, the Texas Longhorns (28-18) were set to face off against the Sam Houston Bearkats (24-21) in their final midweek game of the season. A win meant keeping the momentum rolling and confidence building ahead of their final nine conference games.

Well, safe to say the Longhorns took care of business in that department. The bats slugged their way to a dominant showing at the plate while the bullpen survived a few shaky performances to deliver a convincing victory over Sam Houston.

Now, here are three key takeaways from the Longhorns' 16-9 win over the Bearkats.

Texas third baseman Peyton Powell (15) reacts after getting to second base.

Mikala Compton/American-Statesman / USA

Charlie Hurley building confidence

Facing the UT Arlington Mavericks last Tuesday, the Longhorns turned to Charlie Hurley to start on the mound. Taking advantage of the opportunity, he went out and tossed four shutout innings while allowing just one hit. He was reward for his stellar start with another chance in Tuesday's contest against the Bearkats.

And again, Hurley delivered against a strong Sam Houston lineup. The right-hander put together another sensational outing, going five innings while allowing just one run on one hit. As the season winds down and postseason play looms on the horizon, the Longhorns getting another option that can deliver multiple innings in Hurley bodes well for the pitching staff.

Bats getting hotter

Just when you thought the Longhorns' bats couldn't get any hotter, they go out and deliver a scorching performance in the win over the Bearkats. A lineup that has been potent all season long continued on Tuesday, racking up a whopping 11 extra-base hits. Of those 11, five were home runs - including a pair of grand slams.

Dating back to their game against the Mavericks, the Longhorns have now launched at least five home runs in three of their last five games. Two of those were six home run showings, which ties the program record for most in a game. These bats are rolling folks.

With only nine conference games left, Texas finds itself two games back of the Sooners in the standings. If the bats stay as hot as they have been, don't rule out the Longhorns slugging their way into contention for the Big 12 crown.

Bullpen taking shape

There is no denying that the bullpen has been arguably the biggest concern for the Longhorns this season. They've looked dominant and untouchable at certain points, only to turn around and look like they forgot how to pitch in the very next game. All that being said, though, the arms Texas can trust heading into postseason play appear to be taking shape.

Guys like Gage Boehm and Andre Duplantier II were already well-established in the bullpen, and as such didn't see action against the Bearkats. Two of the arms that did, however, were David Shaw and Easton Tumis. The duo combined for two innings, allowing no runs or hits. A small sample size but something to build on.

With the consistency of guys like Boehm and Duplantier, getting solid innings from other arms such as Shaw and Tumis is something the Longhorns will look for come the postseason.

What's next for Texas?

There are officially no more midweek games for the Longhorns following their win over the Bearkats on Tuesday. They welcome the Oklahoma State Cowboys to town for a series with serious conference title implications, starting on Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT.
