Plus if you’re not sure what to do in JB at night – come to Little Paris when all the pretty lights are lit up and you will really think you are walking down a street in Paris.

Senibong Cove

Senibong Cove

This new Johor Bahru attraction was once an old pram farm but you’d hardly know that now. Senibong Cove is one of the newest areas in Johor Bahru which has now been transformed into a major waterfront development. Here you will find a lovely harbour which you can stroll by recreational parks, plenty of restaurants and swimming pools. This is one of my favourite Johor Bahru places to visit in the late afternoon/evening.

Address: 81750 Masai, Johor

Johor Premium Outlets

Desaru Coast Adventure Waterpark

Desaru Coast Adventure Waterpark Tidal Wave Beach

What to do in Johor Bahru Malaysia when the weather is hot?  Spend the day at Aventure Waterpark of course! At this water park, you’ll find a stack of water slides and attractions perfect for kids and adults alike.

This Desaru Coast Water Park has the region’s very first water coaster – Kraken’s Revenge. This roller coast has a 27-metre drop into the water. The park also features one of the largest wave pools in the world – which is a whopping three hectares!

For the little ones, there is Kids Ahoy – a fantastic kids’ area with three play areas and 13 different slides. It’s the best kids’ area I’ve seen at a water park. Other water attractions in the park include the relaxing looping river of Penawar, the Wild Whirl, Super Twister, Riptide and the Tempest slides.

If you’re after activities to do in Johor Bahru to escape the heat, a day at Adventure Waterpark offers the perfect solution. We had an absolutely fabulous day here with our kids. So much fun!

Teluk Sengat Crocodile Farm

Teluk Sengat Crocodile Farm A pond full of crocodiles

If you want to see crocodiles up close, this is the place!

Teluk Sengat Crocodile Farm is the largest crocodile farm in West Malaysia. It’s home to over 1000 crocodiles including a 130 year old toothless crocodile!

You can wander around this farm from the safety of a concrete, enclosed walkway while watching these creatures. For an extra fee, you can watch them snap up three chickens. My kids thought it was a cool place to visit.

If you prefer to see some of the historical sites on your one day trip to JB, then consider this Johor Bahru city tour itinerary which will allow you to visit your preferred places to go in Johor Bahru.

Start your day by having a traditional Kopitiam breakfast is at Hua Mui’s – which is said to be one of the best places to eat in Johor Bahru. From here take a short 3-minute walk to the Chinese Heritage Museum. On your Johor Bahru tour, be sure to walk via Jalan Tan Hiok Nee which is a lovely heritage street and look out for the colourful buildings and murals on the way.

Before leaving this area, take a short 2-minute walk to Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory for some delicious baked goods. If you’re still full from breakfast get them to take away for later.

From here, take a taxi or walk to the Grand Palace and explore the Royal Abu Bakar Museum. After, walk to the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque. If you are with children, you may prefer to visit the Johor Zoo (close to the mosque) instead of the Museum.

Next, take a 10-minute taxi ride to see the Bukit Serene Palace. From the palace, you could choose to head down to Danga Bay for dinner or another option would be to go back into town for the Pasar Karat or the super trendy Kilang Bateri.

When it comes to where to stay in Johor Bahru, there is a great range of hotels in the city centre as well as resorts in the city outskirts. No matter what your budget, your holiday style or who you are travelling with, you’ll easily find a great place to stay.

Below, I’ve listed a few different places to consider including a budget, mid-range and more expensive option.

TOP – Legoland Malaysia Hotel Review

Legoland Hotel Malaysia

If you’re visiting Legoland, then staying at the on-site Legoland Hotel is highly recommended.

The rooms at Legoland Malaysia Hotel are perfect for families. They come in a range of sizes and choice of themes such as a pirate, kingdom, Ninjago or adventure theme. Families will appreciate how the rooms have two separate sleeping areas – one for adults with a king-sized bed and one for up to three children with a bunk bed, pull-out trundle bed and their own TV.

For hotel guests, there are Lego-themed activities and events throughout the day including meeting a range of Lego characters as well as dance parades and nightly movies. There is also a swimming pool, Lego play area and puzzle activities to unlock secret treasure in your room!

There is even a Lego-themed restaurant.

We absolutely loved staying here and think it’s the best family hotel in Malaysia.

Things to do in Johor Bahru

There’s no shame in being a tourist in our own country, especially when Malaysia has plenty of land worth exploring. In the town of Johor Bahru itself, there are already an abundance of places and an almost inexhaustible amount of things to do.

If you’ve always thought that all there is to JB is Legoland and bowls of Johor laksa, this list will definitely come in handy for your next weekend getaway. Locals and tourists alike will be able to find something new to add into their itinerary, from water parks to a hidden bar that also acts as a full-fledged tailor.

Table of Contents

– Things to do –

– theme parks –, – food and drinks –, – photo spots –, – temples and mosques –, an abundance of things to do in johor bahru, 1. climb mural walls at rocky basecamp aeon mall.

Things To Do Johor Bahru - Rocky Basecamp Aeon Mall

Rock climbing is a great sport for those who aren’t big on outdoor sports since you’re mostly sheltered from the sweltering heat outside. But the idea of climbing up a vertical wall can be daunting to even the best of us, so the mural-painted ones at Rocky Basecamp may just help us overcome our fears.

Things To Do Johor Bahru - Rocky Basecamp

The facilities here are kid-friendly , as some of the murals include King Kong climbing a skyscraper and Rapunzel’s tower. They’re also great for adults who are new to the sport as the mural acts as a good distraction to stop you from thinking about how far off the ground you are.

For those who don’t have a problem with heights, take on some of the more challenging walls that will not only test your endurance but also your muscle strength. The walls in this area measure at a staggering height of 15 metres.

2. Re-enact a Star Wars battle scene at Laser Battle

At Laser Battle , you’ll be equipped with glowing laser guns instead of lightsabers, which is potentially more fun considering it’s easier to sneak up on unwary opponents. Whichever arena you choose to play in, be it the Egyptian or jungle-themed ones, neither will be an easy game as you need to expertly navigate through maze-like layouts.

Things To Do Johor Bahru - Laser Battle

For every point you get, your scores will be tallied up on a digital scoreboard that you can use to determine the winning team after each game. There are also a bunch of games that you can choose from, each having different gameplays and aims.

For example, the Midnight Madness Solo will have individual players tagging as many target zones as they can to collect points, but this is done in complete darkness. The aim of the game is to collect as many points as you can before time runs out.

As the name suggests, all the replicas of landmarks here are painstakingly built out of L ego pieces. It’s the most photographed landmark in Johor for good reason. Its sheer size is enough to impress visitors, but it’s really the actual jewels that are embedded into the crown that makes it a sight to behold.

Things To Do Johor Bahru - Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple

While the Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman temple’s exterior is indeed intricately designed, it doesn’t prepare you for what’s inside, where colourful pieces of glass cover almost every visible surface, aside from the floors and certain corners where statues of deities are placed. About 30,000 pieces of glass were used to transform this temple into the stunning sight it is now.

Things To Do Johor Bahru - Johor Old Chinese Temple

The significance of Johor Old Chinese Temple does not just lie in its humble architectural design, but also in its history. The temple was built by a Chinese headman more than 100 years ago as a sign of peace and unity among the Chinese clans who were fighting each other over territorial reasons.

The entrance to the temple is also a worthy photo spot, as you get to capture the contrast between the old temple built in the late-1800s and the modern skyscrapers that surround it.

Your Guide to Planning a Family-Friendly Getaway in Johor Bahru

Jun 10, 2022

Here's how you can save time planning a trip early and splurge those extra hours frolicking around with your little ones in Johor Bahru!

Last updated: 10 June 2022

If you ever run out of places to visit and things to do in Singapore, remember that Johor Bahru, brimming with food, fun and so much more, is just a hop, skip and ride away.

1. Finding Your Way to Johor Bahru

Finding Your Way to Johor Bahru

With Johor Bahru right next door to Singapore, there are plenty of ways to cross the border, the best one being driving into the state yourself. When you are travelling with ah gong, ah ma and your little tykes, not needing to get off the vehicle to clear customs can be a huge help. But if you’re not familiar with the terrain, we highly advise against driving by yourself.

Instead, you could hop on a train that’ll transport you from Singapore to Johor Bahru in a mere 5 minutes (KTM is resuming the train service from 19 Jun 2022). It could be a novel experience for the young ones and possibly a nostalgic one for the elderly.

If you would rather prefer the convenience and comfort of driving into Johor Bahru without actually driving by yourself, you can also hire a private car. Your options are aplenty, all you have to do is make an advance booking.

A castle-like structure that looks like it was made of building blocks, ferocious dragon to guard your sleep, a hotel lobby that feels more like a whimsical wonderland with its different play areas, and rooms that bring little moppets through the adventurous worlds of knights and ninjas, pharaohs and pirates, is why we love Legoland Hotel . The hotel in itself is an adventure waiting to be explored!

In the city center, there is KSL Resort . Huge, connected to a mall and you’ll get to go splashing in their Dinosaur Water Theme Park. Additionally, they also provide shuttle bus and tickets to Legoland.

My, my, all the fun things you can do in Johor Bahru.

Pass on the usual zoo trip and instead take a trip to a farm for a much more up-and-close experience with the animals. While looking at tigers from a far is fun, we think your little munchkins will love feeding carrots to rabbits and petting goats.

Indoor playgrounds and theme parks scattered around the state provide a bit more of a stimulation for little tots. To list a few, there’s the Fanpekka Indoor Playground, Austin Heights Water Park and Legoland Malaysia. You can’t go wrong with Legoland, especially if you have kiddos of different ages.

For a truly sedap! experience, try chomping on local cuisine. You’ve got a plethora of choices, from roti canai, Teochew Kway Teow, laksa, and wonton noodles, to spicy prawns, braised duck, and fish head curry. Yum, yum, yum, so much yum!

Known to be a shopper’s paradise, a scarcity for malls and shops is something you won’t encounter in Johor Bahru.

If you’re looking for a really good place to go on a shopping spree, we would recommend dropping by the Paradigm Mall . This mammoth of a mall with its seven storeys has everything, from fashion to lifestyle outlets, including a gourmet supermarket. Additionally, the indoor skating rink, rocknasium and playground adds more excitement to your shopping trip.

You also have the option of the ever-popular City Square Mall , located close to the checkpoint. For a little change from the usual, you can hit up KOMTAR JBCC right beside it. And if you’re a fan of brand names like Skechers, Marks & Spencer, and Addidas, you’ll love this spacious mall.

25 Best Things to Do in Johor Bahru (Malaysia)

Johor Bahru is a Malaysian town that sits just across from the border with Singapore. As is the case with many border towns, it had a rather seedy reputation for years before cleaning up its act and developing a great range of new family friendly attractions that have helped its popularity to soar.

If you are in Singapore and looking for a quick day trip then Johor Bahru is a great choice, and you will find a number of cutting-edge malls, bars, and eateries here. If you want to enjoy some of the history of this area however, then the city has a good range of historic and cultural sites, many of which date from the time of the British colonial period.

Any history buff will also enjoy the number of fascinating museums in Johor Bahru or you can spend time eating your way around the city. Like much of Malaysia, Johor Bahru has a delicious local street food scene, and some of the bakeries here are famous for having been in operation for decades.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Johor Bahru :

1. Walk along Jalan Tan Hiok Nee

Jalan Tan Hiok Nee

2. See the animals at the Johor Zoo

Johor Zoo, Johor Bahru

Johor Zoo was one of the first zoos to be built in Southeast Asia and dates from 1928. There are over a hundred different species of animals here and you can expect to find gorillas, elephants, lions, and flamingoes, to name just a few examples of the fauna on show.

There are also bird and reptile houses at the zoo and a number of eateries dotted around in case you fancy a bite to eat.

If you are travelling with children then this is an excellent pick and there are also opportunities to interact with some of the animals during feeding times.

3. Visit Johor Bahru Old Chinese Temple

Johor Bahru Old Chinese Temple

Johor Bahru Old Chinese Temple is a traditional temple that dates from the 19th century and was built in honor of five deities venerated by the Chinese community.

This is one of the oldest religious buildings of its kind in the city and is instantly recognizable thanks to its bright red and white color scheme.

In addition to the actual temple you will also find some exhibits that tell the story of how the Chinese community first came to Johor Bahru.

Certainly no trip to the city is complete without a visit to this famous site.

4. Tour the Istana Besar

5. Have fun at Legoland Malaysia

6. Explore the Johor Bahru Kwong Siew Heritage Gallery

Johor Bahru Kwong Siew Heritage Gallery

The Johor Bahru Kwong Siew Heritage Gallery is a museum that is located in two traditional shop houses that date from 1907. The buildings would have been used as the headquarters of the Kwong Siew Clan Association that was created by Wong Ah Fook, a Chinese born businessman who worked closely with the Sultanate of Johor.

The museum tells the story of the members of this clan and you will find ancient photographs as well as weapons, traditional costumes, and even oddities like antique opium pipes.

Much of the interior is covered in white marble and you will find a pretty blend of quaint Victorian design features mixed with Moorish motifs.

The mosque can accommodate some 2,000 worshippers at one time and if you like religious architecture then this is not to be missed.

If you like unusual structures then make sure not to miss this quirky stop off the itinerary.

9. Sample the pastries at the Salahuddin Bakery

Curry Puffs

The Salahuddin Bakery first opened its doors in 1937 and has been in operation ever since.

Here you will find a delicious selection of baked treats, but one of the main reasons that people have been flocking here for years is for the curry puffs which are a traditional Malay snack of curried meat or vegetables stuffed inside flaky pastry.

The bakery has not changed much since the days of old and the inside still looks like it would have done in the 1930s.

10. Istana Bukit Serene Johor Bahru

Istana Bukit Serene Johor Bahru

Istana Bukit Serene is now the official residence of the Sultan of Johor and as such it is not open to the public.

In the heart of Legoland, amid a Lego “ketupat” hunt, the tunes of the season echo (with an irreverent dose of Alamak Raya Lagi, mind you), ensuring this Hari Raya Aidilfitri season is a memorable one for those visiting the theme park.

It’s almost like visiting an open house celebration, but with the added dopamine rush of exploring a sprawling theme park.

As you step through Legoland’s gates in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, the “Nostalgia Raya” festivities greet you, extending until May 12.

So you still have time to make a dash to the brick paradise for this Raya swing, which has friendly staff ready to guide visitors through a series of Raya pop-ups, featuring activities like Lego “ketupat-weaving”, batik-painting and Lego lantern-making.

Watch out for the life-sized Lego figures when you finish taking photos with the beca (trishaw) to avoid knocking them over. The festive welcome from the staff was just the start, setting the stage for the high-energy adventures that awaited within the theme park.

For both newcomers and seasoned annual pass holders alike, Legoland remains a theme park full of surprises.

A young boy taking part in a Lego ketupat-making activity, which is part of the 'Nostalgia Raya' festive season programme at Legoland.

Staying at the Legoland Hotel nearby is an excellent way to ensure that families and kids get into full bricking mode, with brick pits in the hotel lobby, oversized foam blocks in the swimming pool, and themed rooms featuring favourites like Ninjago and Friends.

Since its launch in September 2012, Legoland has expanded significantly, adding numerous park attractions over the years. The park has introduced new franchise attractions and integrated local content, offering visitors something refreshing every time they visit.

Like any trip to a theme park, the secret is to pace yourself and create the perfect experience through careful planning. Or, if you prefer, you could simply embrace spontaneity and let the kids decide on whatever sparks their fancy (it’s their day out, after all).

A must-see among the new attractions is Miniland Amazing Malaysia (introduced last year), celebrating the nation’s iconic landmarks and cultural sites while showcasing its remarkable architecture.

Numerous attractions, locally developed at the Legoland Model Shop in Johor Baru, showcase the theme park’s evolution through a diverse array of homegrown highlights.

The Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, the largest Lego model in Miniland Amazing Malaysia, is a breathtaking build.

The Lego version of Masjid Jamek, among Kuala Lumpur’s oldest mosques, is a miniature marvel, accentuated by the delightful touch of a Hari Raya banner adorning it for the season.

Red bricks, you say? Well, behold Melaka’s Dutch-era buildings, including The Stadthuys, featured bright and bold in Miniland. And don’t miss the meticulously mapped downtown Johor Baru, offering a glimpse into the local area.

For a “yabba-dabba-doo” treat, try to spot the cute Lego tribute to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim King of Malaysia’s Fred Flintstone mobile, while the trophy-laden JDT team bus parade is Lego gold for football fans in Johor.

While the real Sarawak State Legislative Assembly offers amazing night-time lights for your holiday photo album, the Legoland version, the largest model in Miniland Amazing Malaysia, is also a sight to behold.

A team of eight builders used an astounding 200,000 bricks to construct it.

Miniland, an attraction for all ages, now also features added canopies and shade structures, encouraging visitors to admire other highlights in Asia, like the intricate Angkor Wat and majestic Taj Mahal, at leisure.

Relax and enjoy the journey; brick travel has a way of transporting you to exotic destinations.

The cinematic adventure at Legoland also extends beyond mere viewing – it’s an immersive experience with 4D technology. Don’t miss the newest attraction: the Lego Friends 4D movie.

Settle into the cinema hall among excited children, and brace yourself for a “splash” of a 15-minute film that bursts from the screen, providing you with a full sensory experience.

With more than 40 interactive attractions, it’s wise to plan your Legoland adventure carefully.

What’s a theme park without a trek?

There is no denying the heat and weather conditions in Malaysia can significantly impact your visit to Legoland, especially if you’re accompanied by toddlers and young children (and grandparents too!).

However, the park is strategically designed with numerous shady areas and rest stops, and there are plenty of options to seamlessly switch between indoor and outdoor activities, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all.

As you gear up for your walkabout, make sure to strap on your fitness watch to keep tabs on your steps, track your distance, and watch those calories melt away (even if you indulge in a burger, a large tub of fries, or two ice creams, no worries) as you wander through the themed areas (all eight of them).

At Legoland, with over 40 interactive attractions – rides and shows – for thrill-seekers, curious learners, and families seeking adventure-packed day trips or quick getaways, every moment counts.

If you encounter queues, remember to have an ample supply of water to stay hydrated before embarking on outdoor activities with the family.

At Lego City Driving School, budding drivers can navigate their way through realistic streets and traffic signals, honing their skills behind the wheel (while overly anxious parents call out to their kids from the curb to “stay in your lane!”). The Lego Mindstorms Workshop provides an interactive experience where enthusiasts can explore (basic) robotics and engineering through hands-on activities.

Adventure awaits at Lego Ninjago, where visitors can test their agility on the rock-climbing wall or embark on an exhilarating 4D ride and unleash their Spinjitzu skills to defeat The Great Devourer (even bewildered grandparents, dragged along by their grandkids, will be getting into this one).

When you’re wilting from the heat and overloaded from the rides, take a break in areas like “Build and Test” in Imagination, or Rebuild The World in Planet Legoland. The latter sparks creativity with building challenges, encouraging children to unleash their imagination by constructing everything from innovative modes of transportation to enchanting deep-sea creatures and musical instruments, showcasing the limitless possibilities of the Lego universe.

Like all great adventures, the fun must eventually come to an end, even if you’ve been enjoying yourself since the doors opened at 10am until they close at 6pm.

If you find yourself wanting more Legoland at the end of the day, swing by the main merchandise store (appropriately named The Big Store, complete with child-sized shopping trolleys) and snag a Legoland replica, or an in-store exclusive or three, to keep the adventure alive at home.
