Let’s skate away from the heat at Paradigm Mall JB’s Blue Ice Skating Rink it is the best thing to do in Johor Bahru to have fun. This rink, which was completed in 2017, was the first Blue Ice rink in Malaysia and is now the sole ice skating rink in Johor. The sumptuous Istana Besar, built in 1866, is the state’s Grand Palace and was originally the abode of the Sultan of Johor. The edifice is a stunning combination of Malay and Western structural traditions, and it sticks out with its stark white facade and striking blue roof. Today, it is mostly occupied for formal ceremonies, with a portion of it turned into the Royal Abu Bakar Museum, which houses a gallery of Royal Family antiquities and treasures.

One of the best things in Johor Bahru is the landscape, we recommend you experience the scenic view of Forest City, a green futurist hideaway tucked near the shore of Johor Bahru. Forest City, comprising four man-made isles, mixes environmental resources with trimming knowledge to build a vibrant location with network infrastructure surrounded by spectacular sea vistas and lush foliage. Soak up the rays while strolling through one of their many tranquil playgrounds or exploring the beach.

No locals do not know about the majestic Istana Bukit Serene as the Sultan of Johor’s official house, it is no longer accessible to the public but countless people still come here to see the architecture, and that’s called the reason it is the best things to do in Johor Bahru. There is an entryway here covered with a giant figure of the Sultan’s crown, and you can also see the groomed grounds from the outside. JB Old Town/Heritage District

When planning your Johor Bahru visit, one of the main areas of town to make sure you take in is the Heritage District of Johor Bahru.

You’ll find some of the most interesting attractions at Johor Bahru in the city centre. Here you will find gorgeous century-old buildings which are full of fascinating history.

You can easily walk around this area by yourself to find some of the best known Johor Bahru tourist attractions, and visiting some of the most popular places of interest in Johor Bahru Old Town. You can see 13 buildings of historical interest such as mosques, temples, churches and old buildings. En route, you can also see 31 heritage shops, art galleries and cafes too.

Some interesting places in Johor Bahru Old Town include the High Court Building, Sultan Ibrahim Building, Chinese Heritage Museum (see below), Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, Sentral Police Station, Kampung An Fook, Old Johor Bahru Railway Station, Chinese Temple, Gurdwara Sahib, Indian Encalve, Broadway Cinema, Restoran Ya Wang and Jalan Dhoby.

While you stroll around the streets of the Old Town, you’ll enjoy admiring colourful old buildings as well as plenty of bright and colourful murals.

Chinese Heritage Museum

One of the best tourist attractions in Johor Bahru and definitely the best place to go in Johor Bahru to learn about Chinese settlement in the area is the Chinese Heritage Museum (also called Tiong Hua Museum). At this museum, you will learn about the early days of Chinese settlement in Johor Bahru.

The museum is sprawled across four floors in a building in Jalan Tan Hiok Nee (a great street to explore) and is full of Chinese immigrant history. The museum includes English signage so visitors are able to learn all about this ethnic group including the culture, traditions and the range of skills they brought with them to Johor Bahru.

To enhance your visit, there is also an audio guide available.

It’s not far from JB Sentral and easily walkable if you don’t mind the heat. Otherwise, a Grab taxi here is very cheap.

Entry is RM6 for adults and RM3 for kids/seniors.

Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory

Where to go in Johor Bahru when you’re hungry? The Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory of course!

This famous bakery has been open for over 80 years and is known for using a charcoal oven to bake its treats which is the traditional way of cooking baked goods in Hainan in China – which is where the original bakery owner was from.

At Hiap Joo Bakery and Biscuit Factory be sure to sample some delicious baked goods such as buns, cakes, biscuits and their signature fluffy banana cake, you’ll understand why this place makes it to the top of the list of things to do Johor Bahru if you love tasty treats!

Be warned that there may be long lines when you visit – but believe me it is well worth the wait as it’s one of the best places to visit in JB.

Enjoy a traditional Kopitiam breakfast

You can’t have a Johor Bahru vacation and not eat an authentic Malaysian Kopitiam breakfast. A Kopitiam breakfast consists of a cup of kopi (coffee), toast spread with kaya butter and soft boiled eggs.

Perhaps the best place in JB to get yourself a traditional Kopitiam breakfast is at Hua Mui’s. The cafe is located in an original 2 storey coffee shop and is still furnished with vintage furniture.

Royal Abu Bakar Museum In Istana Besar

Another of the interesting places in JB is the Royal Abu Bakar Museum. The museum is located at Istana Besar which is the royal palace and once the home of the Sultan of Johor. The Victorian-style building is stunning and was completed in 1866.

Since 1990, the palace has housed the Royal Abu Bakar Museum which is the best place to go in JB to see what life was like for the royal family. On display, you will see over 60,000 pieces including a range of antiques and heirlooms that once belonged to the royal family.

Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque

Located on a slight hill, overlooking the Straits of Johor, the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque is a stunning building which features a mix of both Victorian-Moorish architecture and traditional Islamic design. The mosque features four minaret towers which are said to look like British clock towers and the interior of the building is mostly white marble. This is definitely one of the most beautiful places to visit in JB.

The mosque was built over a period of 8 years from 1892 and can house up to 2000 worshippers at any given time.

Be sure to include the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque on your Johor Bahru sightseeing list.

A nice place to visit in Johor Bahru with kids is the Johor Zoo. The Johor Zoo dates back to 1928 and is one of the very first zoos built in Southeast Asia.

While the zoo is not overly big, you will find over a hundred different species of animals including gorillas, flamingos, crocodiles, lions, elephants and more.

In the middle of the zoo is a large lake where you can pedal boats. The zoo also has a playground, food stalls and a range of picnic spots.

Entrance fee is RM2 for adults and RM1 for kids.

Shopping at City Square

Located in the heart of the city and just a short distance from the customs and immigration checkpoint is City Square, which is a popular place to visit in Johor Bahru, Malaysia for those who want to shop.

Things to do in JC City Square include shopping at one of more than 300 retailers, you can eat at a range of restaurants, or you can opt to see a movie at the cinema complex (a great idea if you’re tired after walking around!), hire a karaoke booth or spend some time at the games arcade. There are plenty of things to do with older kids in this mall if you’re visiting Johor Bahru with teenagers and they need some entertainment.

What is here changes as well. On my last visit, it was nearly Halloween so there were some cool Halloween attractions and rides.

The shopping mall also features a pedestrian bridge which connects to the JB Sentral building.

Pasar Karat

If you’re looking for things to do in Johor Bahru at night then head down to Pasar Karat.

Pasar Karat is a large flea market where you can get yourself some great bargains. Items on offer include a range of second-hand clothes, antiques and other knick-knacks. There’s also some street food on offer if you get peckish while browsing!

It’s surprisingly big and had a great vibe when I visited. Walking around here and City Square is very pleasant after the sun goes down. I visited at 7:30pm and more stalls were setting up so go a bit later if possible.

Church of the Immaculate Conception

One of the historical places of interest in Johor Bahru, Malaysia is the Church of the Immaculate Conception. This is a Roman Catholic church which was built in 1927 (there was a church built here previously in 1883).

It is a small, picturesque church which features a single steeple with a traditional British colonial style spire on the top.

If you’re looking for things to do in JB for couples or even activities to do in JB for families, a visit to Danga Bay is a good choice. Danga Bay stretches along 25kms of scenic waterfront which faces the Straits of Johor and includes a large recreational park which has a range of attractions, the Danga City Mall and fine dining restaurants.

The fine dining with stunning views across the bay makes it a great romantic place in JB for couples, while the family attractions make it one of the fun places in Johor Bahru for kids. Some of the family-friendly attractions include the Danga World Mini Theme Park which has a range rides including a carousel, ferris wheel and teacups.

Taman Merdeka

Taman Merdeka is the largest community recreational park which has over 31 acres to explore. It is the perfect place to come for some outdoor activities in Johor Bahru or if you’re looking for stuff to do in Johor Bahru that is outdoors.

The park was inspired by the country’s struggle for independence and features nine lawns, each depicting a chapter in the history of the country’s fight for freedom.

The park features a lake which is great to stroll around. You can also hire some boats to pedal around the lake too. Other things in the park include an open-air theatre, a series of rock sculptures and a musical foundation.

Istana Bukit Serene

If you’re still wondering what to see in Johor Bahru, another popular attraction in Johor Bahru Malaysia is the Istana Bukit Serene. This is the official palace of the Sultan of Johor, so you can’t explore the interior of the building, however, the public is welcome to come and explore the gardens of the Istana Bukit Serene, which are beautiful.

The most recognised feature here is the Crown Archway which apparently actually has real jewels built into it. The manicured gardens also include lovely water fountains and the impressive light features make if a great attraction if you’re wondering where to go in JB at night.

The palace was built in an Art Deco style back in 1933 and apparently from its 35-metre high main tower there is a fabulous view of Singapore.

Legoland Malaysia

If you’re looking for super fun JB things to do with kids you can’t beat a day at Legoland. Legoland is perfect for kids of all ages and certainly one of the Johor Bahru top attractions, particularly for families with little ones and after some fun things to do in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

At Legoland Malaysia, there are multiple worlds to explore, each with their own themes such as Lego Ninjago World, Miniland and Lego Kingdoms. Each of the worlds has a range of Lego-themed rides and you’ll find all the kids favourites here.

Everyone will love spending time in Miniland where there is a range of well known Malaysian (and Asian) landmarks built from Lego. It’s pretty cool to find places you’ve visited and also looking at the detail in these scenes. It’s amazing.

Legoland also offers plenty of areas where you can build with Lego and don’t miss the Lego workshops either. The workshops are a great place to escape the heat as they are inside completely air-conditioned rooms.

There is also a great Lego-themed water park too. There are plenty of great water slides for all ages as well as the wave pool. This requires a separate entry ticket.

You can also visit the aquarium on-site while you are here, SEALIFE.

You will need two days if you want to see everything at Legoland, the water park and SEALIFE, so you might even want to consider staying on-site at the Legoland Hotel. It’s fantastic.

Puteri Harbour

Once you’ve done the regular sightseeing in Johor Bahru city centre, a nice place to go in Johor Bahru is Puteri Harbour. Puteri Harbour is a long promenade on the seafront which features beautiful harbour views, a range of restaurants on Marina Walk and a shopping mall with retail stores. It’s very close to Legoland Malaysia making this one of the places to see in Johor Bahru a convenient area to stay as well.

Little Paris

While you explore Johor Bahru you might be surprised to stumble across the area called Little Paris. Little Paris is basically an area which features a row of gorgeous little shophouses which have exteriors as if they were in the streets of Paris. Here you will find loads of high fashion clothing stores, cafes and bakeries – perfect if you love cute boutiques and are looking for some different Johor Bahru things to do.

Plus if you’re not sure what to do in JB at night – come to Little Paris when all the pretty lights are lit up and you will really think you are walking down a street in Paris.

Senibong Cove

This new Johor Bahru attraction was once an old pram farm but you’d hardly know that now. Senibong Cove is one of the newest areas in Johor Bahru which has now been transformed into a major waterfront development. Here you will find a lovely harbour which you can stroll by recreational parks, plenty of restaurants and swimming pools. This is one of my favourite Johor Bahru places to visit in the late afternoon/evening.

Johor Premium Outlets

If you’ve had enough of the regular sights and want to get some shopping done, then these outlets are probably more your idea of the best JB attractions! For Johor Bahru activities that include shopping then head on down to the Johor Premium Outlets. Here you will find over 150 different outlet shops from designer brands such as Bally, Coach, DKNY, Fossil, Nike, Orton and more.

There is also a range of cafes here so you can make a day out of it.

Top 4 Best Places To Visit In Johor Bahru Surrounds

If you are happy to travel a little bit further and you’re still wondering Johor Bahru, where to go? Here are the top 3 places to go in JB surrounds.

Zenxin Organic Park

One of the interesting places to visit near Johor Bahru is Zenxin Organic Park. Run by Zenxin Argi-Organic Food who is the leading producer of organic produce in Malaysia, at Zenxin Organic Park, you can come and visit their farm while learning all about organic farm practices. This is the first park of its kind in Malaysia and is a great way to spend a few hours if you’re looking for Johor Bahru visiting places.

At the Zenxin Organic Park, you can join a tour across the park, where you’re educated on the process of producing organic crops. Other activities at the park including cooking lessons such as making Nasi Ulam, noodles and curry puffs. There is also animal feeding herb growing workshops too.

There is also a restaurant on site where you can taste the park’s delicious products.

Entrance is RM15 for adults and RM12 for kids.

Desaru Beach

If you’re after a short getaway in Johor Bahru to escape the city then head an hour east to the popular Desaru Beach. Featuring 6 kilometres of wide, white sandy beaches with the calm, warm waters of the South China Sea; Desaru Beach is not only one of the most beautiful places in Johor Bahru but also the perfect place for a swim.

As well as being a great swimming spot, there is also a range of watersports on offer such parasailing and banana boat rides. The region also has some affordable seafood restaurants too.

The area around Desaru Beach has a relaxed vibe, with a range of beach resorts, fishing villages and nature-based activities making it the perfect spot to spend either the day or even a few days.

Entrance fee to the public beach is RM4.

Desaru Coast Adventure Waterpark

What to do in Johor Bahru Malaysia when the weather is hot?  Spend the day at Aventure Waterpark of course! At this water park, you’ll find a stack of water slides and attractions perfect for kids and adults alike.

This Desaru Coast Water Park has the region’s very first water coaster – Kraken’s Revenge. This roller coast has a 27-metre drop into the water. The park also features one of the largest wave pools in the world – which is a whopping three hectares!

For the little ones, there is Kids Ahoy – a fantastic kids’ area with three play areas and 13 different slides. It’s the best kids’ area I’ve seen at a water park. Other water attractions in the park include the relaxing looping river of Penawar, the Wild Whirl, Super Twister, Riptide and the Tempest slides.

If you’re after activities to do in Johor Bahru to escape the heat, a day at Adventure Waterpark offers the perfect solution. We had an absolutely fabulous day here with our kids. So much fun!

Teluk Sengat Crocodile Farm

If you want to see crocodiles up close, this is the place!

Teluk Sengat Crocodile Farm is the largest crocodile farm in West Malaysia. It’s home to over 1000 crocodiles including a 130 year old toothless crocodile!

You can wander around this farm from the safety of a concrete, enclosed walkway while watching these creatures. For an extra fee, you can watch them snap up three chickens. My kids thought it was a cool place to visit.

What To Do In JB In One Day

If you are taking a 1 day trip to JB or are considering planning your own Johor Bahru day tour, then the following two options allow you to make the most of your JB one day trip!

1. Visit Legoland Malaysia

If you’re in town with kids just for a day and wondering what to visit in Johor Bahru – Legoland Malaysia is the ideal choice. The kids will have so much fun on all the Lego-themed rides, plus you can also easily visit the Lego-themed water park and the aquarium on the same day too.

2. Explore Johor Bahru

If you prefer to see some of the historical sites on your one day trip to JB, then consider this Johor Bahru city tour itinerary which will allow you to visit your preferred places to go in Johor Bahru.

Start your day by having a traditional Kopitiam breakfast is at Hua Mui’s – which is said to be one of the best places to eat in Johor Bahru. From here take a short 3-minute walk to the Chinese Heritage Museum. On your Johor Bahru tour, be sure to walk via Jalan Tan Hiok Nee which is a lovely heritage street and look out for the colourful buildings and murals on the way.

Before leaving this area, take a short 2-minute walk to Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory for some delicious baked goods. If you’re still full from breakfast get them to take away for later.

From here, take a taxi or walk to the Grand Palace and explore the Royal Abu Bakar Museum. After, walk to the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque. If you are with children, you may prefer to visit the Johor Zoo (close to the mosque) instead of the Museum.

Next, take a 10-minute taxi ride to see the Bukit Serene Palace. From the palace, you could choose to head down to Danga Bay for dinner or another option would be to go back into town for the Pasar Karat or the super trendy Kilang Bateri.

If you’ve always thought that all there is to JB is Legoland and bowls of Johor laksa, this list will definitely come in handy for your next weekend getaway. Locals and tourists alike will be able to find something new to add into their itinerary, from water parks to a hidden bar that also acts as a full-fledged tailor.

2. Re-enact a Star Wars battle scene at Laser Battle

At Laser Battle , you’ll be equipped with glowing laser guns instead of lightsabers, which is potentially more fun considering it’s easier to sneak up on unwary opponents. Whichever arena you choose to play in, be it the Egyptian or jungle-themed ones, neither will be an easy game as you need to expertly navigate through maze-like layouts.

Rumah Limas does not only refer to the traditional house in Sungai Chat that sells handcrafted souvenirs like batik prints, but it also refers to the architectural design of traditional Indonesian houses. The reason why we can find it in Johor is because Indonesians emigrated here a long time ago, bringing with them their culture and customs. 

At Rumah Limas, you’ll get to explore the traditional house while shopping for souvenirs. The inside of the house itself has been turned into a souvenir shop selling traditional batik pieces and jewellery. There are also mannequin models in display cases that depict the fashion of yesteryears. 

You’ll find beautiful batik scarves here in a variety of colours and designs, making them the perfect gift for anyone you know back home who might appreciate something handmade like this. ATVs – also known as four-wheelers – are these massive bikes that are able to navigate through rough terrains that cars won’t be able to. The Johor Zoo is said to be the very first zoo in Asia, having been established in 1928 by the late Sultan of Johor. It may not be as big as the Zoo Negara in KL, but this local zoo has its own merits that are enough to bring in a daily stream of visitors. Thrill-seekers will have a ball at Skyscape in Menara JLand where visitors are able to stroll along the glass-floored Sky Bridge while taking pictures of the surrounding cityscape. You’ll even be able to spot Singapore from across the Causeway.

21. Bring your date for late-night go-karting at RUD Karting

24. Glide over ice at Blue Ice Skating Rink

Ice skating is always a fun weekend activity for both rookies and experienced pros alike . At Blue Ice Skating Rink , you’ll be able to cover pretty good ground as the rink here is one of the biggest in Malaysia at 20,000sqft.

Plus, they’re one of the few that uses real ice instead of a synthetic alternative. Struggling skaters may have a much better time skating on real ice as there’s less friction against your blades. 25. Get your adrenaline pumping at Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park

When news rolled out that a 3-in-1 park was opening in JB, the local community couldn’t be more stoked about it. It has been a couple of years since Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park has opened its doors to the public, but it still remains to be a popular attraction to this day. 

When the JB heat becomes intolerable, the water park at Austin Heights will be your oasis. Not only do you get to dip into the water to cool off, but there are also a number of thrilling slides that you can take on. 

The fun doesn’t have to end after you’ve checked off all the rides in the water park as you can keep the adrenaline going at the sports and leisure area. Here, you can go for drift karting at a course full of twists and turns. You don’t need to worry about crashing into anything as the entire course has been lined with tyres to help cushion any collision impact, so it’s as safe as bumper cars.

You’ll also find a trampoline park nearby, where the entire area has been fitted with trampoline mats for you to bounce about. 

Before you completely tire yourself out, be sure to hit up the adventure park where a 51-obstacle course awaits you. The high-elements course will have you scaling across walls and zip-lining through the space at about 5 metres above the ground.

26. Funfair rides at Danga Bay World Theme Park

We don’t usually see many permanent funfairs like the one at Danga Bay . The funfair has classic rides such as a carousel , pirate ship , bumper car , and Ferris wheel .

With prices starting from as low as RM2/ride , we can imagine Johorean youths flocking over here during weekends for budget dates or just hanging out with friends.

The carnival here is open till 2AM, so it’s a great alternative to midnight movies and suppers at mamak s for night owls. 27. Explore landmarks worldwide at Legoland

When talking about top attractions in Johor Bahru, it’s almost impossible to not bring up Legoland . Back when there were fewer attractions, a large percentage of JB’s tourism was contributed by families making their way down just for Legoland. After all, it was every kid’s dream. 

As the name suggests, all the replicas of landmarks here are painstakingly built out of L ego pieces. It’s no easy feat to build famous attractions from all over the world, and the lego count actually tallies up to 30 million pieces. However, it seems that the effort has been paid off considering Malaysians all over gather here to “travel” the world without leaving a dent in our bank accounts.

Prolific cafe hoppers would’ve heard about Rowan & Parsley by now. After all, there are only a few cafes around that have the same garden-plus-glasshouse concept as they do. 

The inside of the cafe is decked out in warm wood tones as seen in their choice of vintage furniture. The rustic decorations blend well with the industrial space, creating a monochrome colour palette consisting of mostly different shades of browns.

It’s easy to walk past 90 Tailor Bar without knowing there’s a bar inside due to its unassuming storefront as an old-school tailor. Staying in line with its theme, the mannequins by the window even don 80s fashion pieces. 

Step inside the humble shop and you’ll see a rack of dapper suits, a wall full of black-and-white photographs, and a marble work desk at the corner. If you were wondering, yes you can actually get suits here.

Salahuddin Bakery has been around since 1937, making them one of the oldest bakeries in JB. In fact, they’re still using the very same wood-fired oven – similar to the ones we usually see pizzas bake in – from when they were first established. 

Locals and tourists alike head here for their curry puffs – they are similar to Bengali curry puffs (RM2) in that they are triangular in shape instead of half-moon-shaped. 

The filling is made of curry potatoes, onions, and your choice of minced meat – you can choose from chicken, beef or lamb. The crispy outer layer of the pastry immediately crumbles apart at first bite, a good indicator to show how delicate and fine the layers are.

38. Try out banana bread made using a 100-year-old recipe at Hiap Joo Bakery

I f you’re tapau – ing baked goods for your foodie friends, don’t miss out on this famous banana bread from JB. Pay a visit to Hiap Joo Bakery where their recipe for banana bread (from RM5) is over 100 years old. 

The famous banana cake is still gaining popularity as we speak, which means you’ll have to prepare yourself for a long wait to get your hands on a loaf. What you’ll get in return though, is a warm loaf of banana bread that has a nice golden crust on top, with a moist and spongy centre.

39. Hit up the food trucks at Tebrau

Planning for a group outing can be a headache when you’re trying to accommodate your friends’ personal tastes and preferences, which is why food courts and mamaks have become a go-to gathering spot. To shake things up, have your next gathering at this food truck park in Tebrau. 

The park has a different rotation of food trucks each day, with a few permanent additions, so you can always look forward to something new each time you head here for dinner. Plus, there’ll always be a minimum of 10 food trucks on any given day.

Food options here are affordable as well, considering you can get Nasi Goreng Seafood and a cup of cendol for only RM10 and a serving of Spicy Chicken Cheese for RM12 . You can also look forward to moree yummy noms such as Bubur Ayam , Mexican Nachos , and Satay . 

The crowd of hungry diners tend to stay till late as the food truck park is open till 12AM, making it a great alternative for late dinners and supper.

40. Shop at a permanent bazaar at B5 Johor Street Market

Think of B5 Johor Street Market as a permanent bazaar that lets you patronise your favourite food stall and get good bargains all year round. 

You’ll notice that most of the food stalls here offer signature Johorean delights such as laksa and satay, so it’s a one-stop centre to check off all the local food you need to try here too. They also have retail shops where you can hunt for the next addition to your closet or souvenirs for your friends back home. 

The B5 Street Market is a newly opened space that has only started welcoming visitors in February 2020. While there are already stores and outlets opened, the street market is still fast expanding with lots more to come. 

Besides dining and shopping, the space is host to plenty of performances, art exhibitions, and workshops. Some of the events previously held here include a traditional Kuda Kepang performance, which is a traditional Javanese dance, and a Zumbarobik class for those looking for a community to realise your fitness goals together.

41. Marvel at an entire wall of bookshelves at Little Prince Cafe

Cafes these days don’t just shoot to fame for having good food. When everyone goes on IG and Facebook to hunt for new eats, it has become crucial to have a visually appealing interior as well. It didn’t take long for Little Prince Cafe to find a spot on every cafe hoppers’ list after debuting its floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. 

Much like the minimalist illustrations in those Little Prince storybooks that we grew up reading, the cafe’s interior exudes that same sort of serene and peaceful vibe. With its warm wooden flooring, high ceilings, and simple decor, this is the kind of cafe that we can easily spend our entire morning in. 

Besides serving as an excellent photo spot, their desserts here are also worth a try. Those looking to fill their bellies with a proper meal can opt for the Little Prince Fried Noodles (from RM12.80) or the Saucy Beef Rice (from RM18.80) .

42. Take a scenic stroll down Puteri Harbour

Being in Johor means that we get to have the best of both worlds when it comes to nature. Aside from hiking trails, pay a visit to Puteri Harbour where you get to have your evening stroll with a scenic view of the marina. 

Besides admiring the fleet of sailboats that are docked at the side and watching the sun set across the horizon, there are also multiple photo spots for you and your pals to snap a customary wefie. Entrance is free too, so it’s great for a budget-friendly activity.

43. Tour a town made of shipping containers at Spring Labs

Spring Labs is part of the residential area of Eko Flora, but visitors are free to drop by this container “town” . The buildings are all made from repurposed shipping containers, and a lot of them are made to look like petite houses.

Spring Labs is an IG-friendly location where there are multiple corners and spots that’ll serve as a perfect backdrop for a photo. 

The Ferris wheel is one of the most popular spots where locals make the drive down just for that perfect snap. If you look closely, you can even spot the pink teddy bears that are in each of the Ferris wheel’s cabins .

They have a growing list of tenants here that range from retail outlets to trendy restaurants. Among some of the eateries you’ll find here, there’s Tropique Cafe & Restaurant – a pork-free cafe serving brunch delights such as the B&B French Toast (RM24.90) that’s served with a side of brulee-d bananas and beef bacon. 

Spring Labs also houses 2 flower shops, Fleuromance Market and PS Floral Atelier , where you can surprise your loved one with a customised bouquet. If you’re bringing kids along, you may want to drop by Diggersite . It’s an educational play centre that provides young children with a realistic experience in operating construction machinery.

44. Explore a town preserved in time at JB Old Town

If Melaka has Jonker Walk and Ipoh has Concubine Lane, then Johor has JB Old Town . To find the exact location of this area, just look for Jalan Tan Hiok Nee. This part of town is full of colourful murals waiting to be discovered and beautiful heritage buildings that illustrate JB’s rich culture. 

Not much has been changed around here except for the fresh coats of paint and some necessary renovation works, as per Johor council’s orders. This basically means that visitors will be able to take a walk back in time to experience the olden days in Johor. In between mural-hunting, stop by for a cuppa at one of the many cafes lining this street.

45. Pose by the serene waters and idle sailboats at Senibong Cove

Senibong Cove is a residential area in JB, but its scenic location warrants a visit here if you’re looking for IG-worthy spots during your trip. Facing a serene marina, visitors will be able to take a stroll along the docks.

Once the sun sets, Senibong Cove becomes a popular dating spot among couples who want to have a romantic evening stroll. There are also plenty of restaurants and bars in the area, such as Harvests Bar & Grill and Yew’s Cafe , that give you a view of the marina.

46. Pose for fun photos at Trickeye Museum [Closed]

We’re all too familiar with the concept of using perspectives to make 2D art look 3D, but the fun never seems to cease with these. Not only is it a fun activity getting the angle right to get a trippy shot, we also get to leave with a bunch of new photos ready to be posted on social media. At Trickeye Museum , they incorporate AR technology so that you capture cool effects too, when you download their app on your phone. 

As you make your way through the museum, you’ll come across tons of different themes – from sweet desserts to scary predators. All you need to do is come up with creative poses and have a friend snap away. 

Tickets cost RM38/adult , while students and kids below 12 can enjoy a discounted rate of RM30/pax .

47. Wait for your movie to start at TGV’s Coca-Cola Cafe

Toppen Shopping Centre is one of the newest malls in JB, and while there are a number of reasons to pay them a visit, this Coca-Cola Cafe might just be the thing to convince you. The cafe is accessible via the mall’s TGV theatre, so movie-goers will be able to lounge here while waiting for their hall number to light up. 

The interior is decked out in the iconic black-and-white tiles of a 1950s diner and most of the furnishing s like countertops, lamps, and cushioned chairs are all in Coke’s signature bright red. 

While you’re here, you can also charge your phones at the designated “Power Zone” that comes equipped with power sockets and charging pads. There’s also a fully functioning jukebox to keep you entertained. Browse through a selection of classic soundtracks from popular movies such as The Shining , Ghostbusters , and E.T .

48. See r eal jewels at Istana Bukit Serene

Just like how Buckingham Palace is a must-visit when you go to London, one shouldn’t miss out on dropping by Istana Bukit Serene when in JB. While you’ll be able to get a glimpse of the Sultan of Johor’s former palace and revel in the stunning Malay-European architecture, most tourists squeeze in time to pay a visit for another reason – the JB crown arch. 

It’s the most photographed landmark in Johor for good reason. Its sheer size is enough to impress visitors, but it’s really the actual jewels that are embedded into the crown that makes it a sight to behold. 

Whether you’re visiting during the day or at night, the spot makes for a great photo op. It gets especially busy at night with couples going for a romantic stroll along the sprawling garden and tourists admiring the jewel crown fixture as it gets illuminated by street lights.

49. Take dreamy photos at the courtyards of Kota Iskandar Mosque

We’ve seen stunning pictures of mosques from all over the world, and there’s one in Johor that deserves a rank on that list. Kota Iskandar Mosque is a must-visit not only for worshippers but those who’d like to explore the beautiful courtyards within its premises. 

Weekends here are also packed with people, and you’ll see many with their cameras out. After all, it’s one of Johor’s most photogenic locations, so put it on your must-visit list if the idea of a holiday photoshoot interests you. 

There are 3 courtyards for you to explore – Musk Garden, Johor Atrium Courtyard, and Flower Garden. They’re known to be so visually appealing that it has become a highly sought-out location amongst couples for pre-wedding shoot s . 

Besides its gorgeous architecture, you can also spot carvings of Quranic verses and Islamic motifs along the walls of this religious hub.

50. Be in awe of the thousands of shards decking out Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple

Southeast Asia is graced with some of the most unique and beautiful temples in the world, and Malaysia has a spot on the list too with its share of stunning Indian temples . Not many Malaysians may know this, but JB is actually home to the world’s first Hindu glass temple . 

While the Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman temple’s exterior is indeed intricately designed, it doesn’t prepare you for what’s inside, where colourful pieces of glass cover almost every visible surface, aside from the floors and certain corners where statues of deities are placed. About 30,000 pieces of glass were used to transform this temple into the stunning sight it is now.

Besides its one-of-a-kind interior, the temple has garnered strong support from the local community for having statues of religious figures from across beliefs, including those from Islam and Buddhism.

51. Visit the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque that’s located on a breezy hilltop

The Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque is a protected heritage monument that’s worth exploring for its intricate architectural design. Even if you’re not an architectural design buff, you can spot the obvious influences from the Victorian age. 

The mosque also sits atop a hill that’ll give you a bird’s-eye view of the straits of Johor and our neighbours, Singapore.

Explore the mosque grounds and take the time to admire the details. It was constructed some time in the late-1800s, but much of it has been preserved, which makes your visit feel like a walk back in time.

52. Snap a picture at Johor Old Chinese Temple, a symbol of peace and harmony

The significance of Johor Old Chinese Temple does not just lie in its humble architectural design, but also in its history. The temple was built by a Chinese headman more than 100 years ago as a sign of peace and unity among the Chinese clans who were fighting each other over territorial reasons. 

The entrance to the temple is also a worthy photo spot, as you get to capture the contrast between the old temple built in the late-1800s and the modern skyscrapers that surround it. 

To this day, the temple still welcomes worshippers from all major Chinese clans in Johor – Teochew, Hokkien, Hakka, Cantonese, and Hainanese.

If you ever run out of places to visit and things to do in Singapore, remember that Johor Bahru, brimming with food, fun and so much more, is just a hop, skip and ride away.

1. Finding Your Way to Johor Bahru

With Johor Bahru right next door to Singapore, there are plenty of ways to cross the border, the best one being driving into the state yourself. When you are travelling with ah gong, ah ma and your little tykes, not needing to get off the vehicle to clear customs can be a huge help. But if you’re not familiar with the terrain, we highly advise against driving by yourself.

Instead, you could hop on a train that’ll transport you from Singapore to Johor Bahru in a mere 5 minutes (KTM is resuming the train service from 19 Jun 2022). It could be a novel experience for the young ones and possibly a nostalgic one for the elderly.

If you would rather prefer the convenience and comfort of driving into Johor Bahru without actually driving by yourself, you can also hire a private car. Your options are aplenty, all you have to do is make an advance booking.

2. Kicking Back at a Hotel

A castle-like structure that looks like it was made of building blocks, ferocious dragon to guard your sleep, a hotel lobby that feels more like a whimsical wonderland with its different play areas, and rooms that bring little moppets through the adventurous worlds of knights and ninjas, pharaohs and pirates, is why we love Legoland Hotel . 3. It’s All Fun and Games

My, my, all the fun things you can do in Johor Bahru.

Pass on the usual zoo trip and instead take a trip to a farm for a much more up-and-close experience with the animals. While looking at tigers from a far is fun, we think your little munchkins will love feeding carrots to rabbits and petting goats.

Indoor playgrounds and theme parks scattered around the state provide a bit more of a stimulation for little tots. To list a few, there’s the Fanpekka Indoor Playground, Austin Heights Water Park and Legoland Malaysia. You can’t go wrong with Legoland, especially if you have kiddos of different ages.

4. Soul Soothing Food

You’ll find a smorgasbord of food at Johor Bahru, whether you need to fill your tummy, need a bite between meals or simply want to indulge your taste buds in a morsel of munchies. Trendy cafes for your daily dose of caffeine as well as to satisfy your sweet cravings and restaurants serving up international fares such Korean, Japanese and Western are almost everywhere.

This mammoth of a mall with its seven storeys has everything, from fashion to lifestyle outlets, including a gourmet supermarket. Additionally, the indoor skating rink, rocknasium and playground adds more excitement to your shopping trip.

You also have the option of the ever-popular City Square Mall , located close to the checkpoint. For a little change from the usual, you can hit up KOMTAR JBCC right beside it. And if you’re a fan of brand names like Skechers, Marks & Spencer, and Addidas, you’ll love this spacious mall.

1. Walk along Jalan Tan Hiok Nee

10. Istana Bukit Serene Johor Bahru

Istana Bukit Serene is now the official residence of the Sultan of Johor and as such it is not open to the public.

Many people still come here however to check out the exterior and you will find an arch here topped with a large model of the crown of the Sultan and you can also check out the manicured lawns from the outside.

In the heart of Legoland, amid a Lego “ketupat” hunt, the tunes of the season echo (with an irreverent dose of Alamak Raya Lagi, mind you), ensuring this Hari Raya Aidilfitri season is a memorable one for those visiting the theme park.

It’s almost like visiting an open house celebration, but with the added dopamine rush of exploring a sprawling theme park.

As you step through Legoland’s gates in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, the “Nostalgia Raya” festivities greet you, extending until May 12.

So you still have time to make a dash to the brick paradise for this Raya swing, which has friendly staff ready to guide visitors through a series of Raya pop-ups, featuring activities like Lego “ketupat-weaving”, batik-painting and Lego lantern-making.

Watch out for the life-sized Lego figures when you finish taking photos with the beca (trishaw) to avoid knocking them over. The festive welcome from the staff was just the start, setting the stage for the high-energy adventures that awaited within the theme park.

For both newcomers and seasoned annual pass holders alike, Legoland remains a theme park full of surprises.

Staying at the Legoland Hotel nearby is an excellent way to ensure that families and kids get into full bricking mode, with brick pits in the hotel lobby, oversized foam blocks in the swimming pool, and themed rooms featuring favourites like Ninjago and Friends.

Since its launch in September 2012, Legoland has expanded significantly, adding numerous park attractions over the years. The park has introduced new franchise attractions and integrated local content, offering visitors something refreshing every time they visit.

Like any trip to a theme park, the secret is to pace yourself and create the perfect experience through careful planning. Or, if you prefer, you could simply embrace spontaneity and let the kids decide on whatever sparks their fancy (it’s their day out, after all).

A must-see among the new attractions is Miniland Amazing Malaysia (introduced last year), celebrating the nation’s iconic landmarks and cultural sites while showcasing its remarkable architecture.

For a “yabba-dabba-doo” treat, try to spot the cute Lego tribute to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim King of Malaysia’s Fred Flintstone mobile, while the trophy-laden JDT team bus parade is Lego gold for football fans in Johor.

While the real Sarawak State Legislative Assembly offers amazing night-time lights for your holiday photo album, the Legoland version, the largest model in Miniland Amazing Malaysia, is also a sight to behold.

A team of eight builders used an astounding 200,000 bricks to construct it.

Miniland, an attraction for all ages, now also features added canopies and shade structures, encouraging visitors to admire other highlights in Asia, like the intricate Angkor Wat and majestic Taj Mahal, at leisure.

Relax and enjoy the journey; brick travel has a way of transporting you to exotic destinations.

The cinematic adventure at Legoland also extends beyond mere viewing – it’s an immersive experience with 4D technology. Don’t miss the newest attraction: the Lego Friends 4D movie.

Settle into the cinema hall among excited children, and brace yourself for a “splash” of a 15-minute film that bursts from the screen, providing you with a full sensory experience.

What’s a theme park without a trek?

There is no denying the heat and weather conditions in Malaysia can significantly impact your visit to Legoland, especially if you’re accompanied by toddlers and young children (and grandparents too!).

However, the park is strategically designed with numerous shady areas and rest stops, and there are plenty of options to seamlessly switch between indoor and outdoor activities, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all.

As you gear up for your walkabout, make sure to strap on your fitness watch to keep tabs on your steps, track your distance, and watch those calories melt away (even if you indulge in a burger, a large tub of fries, or two ice creams, no worries) as you wander through the themed areas (all eight of them).

At Lego City Driving School, budding drivers can navigate their way through realistic streets and traffic signals, honing their skills behind the wheel (while overly anxious parents call out to their kids from the curb to “stay in your lane!”). The Lego Mindstorms Workshop provides an interactive experience where enthusiasts can explore (basic) robotics and engineering through hands-on activities.

Adventure awaits at Lego Ninjago, where visitors can test their agility on the rock-climbing wall or embark on an exhilarating 4D ride and unleash their Spinjitzu skills to defeat The Great Devourer (even bewildered grandparents, dragged along by their grandkids, will be getting into this one).

When you’re wilting from the heat and overloaded from the rides, take a break in areas like “Build and Test” in Imagination, or Rebuild The World in Planet Legoland. The latter sparks creativity with building challenges, encouraging children to unleash their imagination by constructing everything from innovative modes of transportation to enchanting deep-sea creatures and musical instruments, showcasing the limitless possibilities of the Lego universe.

Like all great adventures, the fun must eventually come to an end, even if you’ve been enjoying yourself since the doors opened at 10am until they close at 6pm.
