PHIL LESH & FRIENDS SET 2022 ITINERARY

PHIL LESH & FRIENDS SET 2022 ITINERARY

Getty Images

Grateful Dead co-founder Phil Lesh has just announced 21 solo dates, which culminate in a nine-show residency at Port Chester, New York's Capitol Theatre. Lesh kicks off his 2022 dates on June 4th at Stanford, California's Frost Amphitheatre.

Backing Lesh on the road will be Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench , Phil's son, guitarist Grahame Lesh , drummer Joe Russo , and guitarists Scott Metzger and John Scofield .

Although Phil Lesh was part of the Grateful Dead's five 2015 "Fare Thee Well" concerts, he's been adamant to let the band be a thing of the past. As it's been no secret of disagreements amongst the surviving Dead members, we thought we'd ask drummer Mickey Hart why Lesh — who relies heavily on the Dead catalogue for his solo setlists — chose not to carry on the band's legacy with them: ["I have no idea. I have no contemplation of about that. . . I have no idea . I understand Phil is having a wonderful life and enjoying himself and enjoying himself and I'm happy for him — and so am I. And so it seems like we're all in a good place."] SOUNDCUE (:12 OC . . . a good place)

As you may expect from Phil Lesh, the former Grateful Dead bassist, when you go to see him and his Friends live it isn't your standard rock concert.

It is hard to explain what a Phil Lesh and Friends show is like and this is primarily due to the fact that the line-up is rarely the same from one tour to the next and that they are constantly updating their sound.

The band are essentially a Grateful Dead tribute band but in their live incarnation are so much more than that.

Their first show, in 1994, with Grateful Dead members Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir and Vince Welnick for what was an unplugged Grateful Dead show. The group didn't appear under that name again until 1999 when Phil Lesh appeared with a whole new group of 'Friends'.

The most consistent incarnation of the group came in the early 2000s under the name the Phil Lesh Quintet, which was comprised of Lesh himself, Warren Haynes and Jimmy Herring (The Allman Brothers Band), Rob Barraco (The Dead), and John Molo (David Nelson Band). The band released an album with this line-up, in 2002, entitled There and Back Again which contained a variety of new songs.

This line-up were known for their fast-paced, harder rock that was some way away from the Grateful Dead's original sound and tended to verge more on a southern rock sound.

The current line-up have been touring the USA for a lot of this year and continue to wow audiences across the States. They have also kept one the the Grateful Dead's traditions, which is allowing fans to record live shows, alive. Instead of discouraging the idea of recording shows and trading them over the internet this is something the band embrace, making a live show something spectacular when you see so many phone lights up in the air all at once.

If you're a fan of the Grateful Dead or southern alternative rock then a Phil Lesh and Friends show is definitely the place to be.

Music | ‘a very bad individual’: man shot, wounded two san jose police officers shot in hotel confrontation, music | review: phil lesh and friends kick off 2022 tour at stanford, phil’s friends include joe russo, john scofield, benmont tench.

Grateful Dead founding member Phil Lesh performs with The Dead at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, Calif., Sunday, May 10, 2009. (D. Ross Cameron/Staff)

There we were at Stanford University’s lovely Frost Amphitheater — right in the midst of where it all it began for the Palo Alto-born Grateful Dead nearly 60 years ago — and we were watching 82-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Phil Lesh perform Dead tunes once again onstage.

It felt good. It felt right. It felt like going home.

And, really, it’s always felt that way at Frost — a venue that the Dead played 14 times during its career.

Just ask Lesh, who took to social media to share his enthusiasm about the return to Stanford.

“Going back to where it all began, a dream we dreamed one afternoon, long ago,” he posted earlier on Facebook. “I couldn’t be more excited to take this trip down to Palo Alto with my dear friends Grahame Lesh, Scott Metzger, Joe Russo, John Scofield and Benmont Tench.”

Yes, that was the amazing lineup for this Phil Lesh and Friends show. It looked good on paper — especially with the unexpected additions of jazz guitar legend Scofield and Tench, of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers fame — and it translated even better in concert.

The Frost concert served as the kickoff to Lesh’s 2022 tour, although upcoming dates won’t necessarily feature this same lineup of Friends.

Saturday’s show got off to a bit of a slow start, as the band offered up a “Truckin'” that never really got out of second gear and then stalled a bit in the jammed-out transition to “Playing in the Band.”

Yet, the joy was so tangible in the audience that nobody seemed to mind. Fans were too busy shouting along with iconic “Truckin'” line — “What a long strange trip it’s been” — and feeling the added poignancy from being back where said “long strange trip” began.

The group really began to jell with “St. Stephen” and the continued to find its footing as it rolled through “Uncle John’s Band” and “Sugar Magnolia” during the 80-minute first set.

The band loaded up on the hits so strongly — and in such a non-Dead-like manner — in the first set that it was almost like somebody had just dropped the needle on 1974’s “Skeletons from the Closet: The Best of Grateful Dead” and let it run. I was half expecting that the group would return from the set break and just play “Touch of Grey” seven times in a row and call it a night.

Thankfully, that’s not what was in store for fans. Instead, the group would open the second set with a cover of the Jerry Garcia solo number “Bird Song” (from 1972’s terrific debut “Garcia”) and then mix things up fairly well during the rest of the 90-minute second set.

Of course, Scofield drew the lion’s share of the attention when this Friends lineup was originally announced. I guess that’s what happens when you’ve previously worked with Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and so many other jazz masters. Tench also caught his share of eyes, with people wondering what this Heartbreaker might bring to the equation.

Both of them would shine mightily in the second set.

Tench added some punch to the psychedelic sounds, seasoning these Dead favorites with roadhouse grooves that drew from boogie-woogie, R&B and Southern rock.

Scofield was a bit tentative at times, especially in the first set. Yet, he’d absolutely soar during the second — especially during his breathtaking solo in “I Know You Rider” (played without its traditional “China Cat Sunflower” intro). He propelled that song to such heights that it simply towered over anything else the group would play on this night.

Overall, the show was dominated by the work of guitarist Metzger and drummer Russo. The former, in particular, was an absolute beast — wowing the crowd with one gorgeous lead after another. Plus, these two players share such wonderful synergy, which they’ve nurtured over the years as they’ve worked together in the popular Grateful Dead tribute act Joe Russo’s Almost Dead. It definitely makes one want to check out Russo’s Almost Dead when it performs at this same venue on Aug. 13, live.stanford.edu .

Lesh and his son Grahame handled most of the vocals throughout the night — and did so quite admirably — although Metzger also impressed with his Bob Weir-like vocals on “Let It Grow.”

The group closed the second set with a terrific run through the classic “Terrapin Station,” offering it up for what it truly is — “a rare and different tune.”

Phil Lesh and Friends return to play the Stern Grove Festival’s annual Big Picnic event on Aug. 14 in San Francisco. Admission to the concerts is free, but fans must reserve their spots in advance at sterngrove.org . The Friends lineup (i.e. band members) for that show have yet to be made be announced.

His first concert is scheduled for June 4th at the Frost Amphitheater at Stanford in Palo Alto, California during which he will be joined by John Scofield, Scott Metzger, and Benmont Tench. He’ll then head to Oregon, Washington, and Colorado before flying to Bridgeport, Connecticut on July 1st.
