James Martin Live at Birmingham Symphony Hall reviewed - 'like Saturday Morning show on steroids'

Smelling his butter-soaked food waft across Symphony Hall was tantalising yet torture as he smirked 'enjoy your kebab on the way home'.

James Martin Live

Alison Brinkworth

  • 09:31, 24 OCT 2023

James Martin on stage smiling at the camera

TV chef James Martin does warn the audience 'this will be like my Saturday show on steroids' but even I wasn't prepared for the riotous, frenetic two hours that followed. His straight-talking views on air fryers, butter, Joe Wicks and even his jaw-dropping treatment of a Barbie doll left no stone unturned.

From his unusual entrance at Birmingham's Symphony Hall , it was clear this would be an uncensored Martin in a no-holds barred night of entertainment. Not just about cooking and recipes , but comedy, cars, nostalgic family stories and music as he takes several turns on his guitar.

Swearing, calling for bans on air fryers and single cream and throwing in copious amounts of butter to every recipe, the Yorkshireman has a twinkle in his eye as he lets his character shine, with a touch of self mockery.

What became clear is how funny Martin really is. His risque jokes that normally aren't allowed during Saturday prime time family viewing had the audience in stitches. Even Michelin-starred Birmingham chef Glynn Purnell , who was a special guest in the audience, was the butt of many good-natured jokes - and took them well.

This is the This Morning chef's fourth UK tour and first since Martin publicly apologised over a leaked clip of him berating co-workers behind-the-scenes . Although it was over a drain that had become blocked at his home during filming of James Martin’s Saturday Morning, the 50-year-old had opened up about having been diagnosed with cancer on his face at the same time.

Referring to that at the close of this show, there was heartfelt sentiment as he thanked everyone for the support and well-wishes he'd received in such a "difficult year".

James Martin cooking on stage while being filmed by a cameraman

It felt genuine and brimming with emotion - some of the main reasons why I think Martin is now one of the most popular British personalities of his generation.

Much of this new tour is sentimental and nostalgic. It opens with a touching unusual tribute to the late, great Keith Floyd (which I don't want to spoil) and spends all the second act reminiscing on food and Martin's experiences during the 1970s and '80s.

There's some wonderful memories about life with his nan, parents and sister, growing up on a Yorkshire pig farm. Fights with his sister between her doll and his Evil Knievel toy have obviously left their mark as he seemed far too keen to hack away at a Barbie doll. It was one of the craziest moments of the show that still haunts me, but makes hilarious sense when you see the final result of his recipe.

james martin tour venues 2023

When it comes to the recipes, there are nine he cooks live with assistance from his trusty side-kick Sam in what is most similar to his Saturday morning ITV programme and adventures in Spain and France. They include fantastic adaptations of his memories of everything from KFC to Berni Inn.

There's also a 'Hassleback Sarnie' that is literally a heart attack on a plate that takes his love of butter to a whole new level. It has to be seen to be believed.

Smelling his butter-soaked food waft across Symphony Hall was tantalising yet torture as he smirked 'enjoy your kebab on the way home'. Martin knows everyone would much rather get a taste of his homely creations instead, however high the calorie content.

POLL: Will you be answering the door to trick-or-treaters this year?

Breaking up the cooking are anecdotes and music from Martin plus plenty of audience participation that helps keep the atmosphere so lively.

Ahead of the event, an excited Martin had posted a picture of inside Birmingham's Symphony Hall declaring 'love this place, what a room!' Known for its unrivalled acoustics, Martin's elation became clear when he grabbed his guitar with a fellow musician to perform tracks by the Rolling Stones and Journey for a singalong.

If you want to know what the real James Martin is like, then this is the show for you. It's the popular chef in all his uncensored cheekiness, brimming with fun and naughtiness. Licking his fingers with a devilish look in his eye, Martin has the audience eating out of the palm of his hand during a joyous, refreshing night of entertainment.

Our first look at Apple Park

Apple's spaceship has touched down in Cupertino, California. We visited its landing zone.

Tuesday wasn't just the launch of  three new iPhones, an Apple Watch and an Apple TV. It was also the first time Apple welcomed journalists to its gigantic, 175-acre Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California.

Apple Park is home to several buildings, most prominently a 2.8-million square-foot ring unofficially known as the Spaceship, which boasts four-story curved glass panels, custom aluminum doorhandles and one of the largest roof-mounted solar farms in the world. It's the new home for more than 12,000 Apple employees, a sizeable chunk of Apple's Cupertino workforce.

Our first trip to Apple's spaceship campus

james martin tour venues 2023

Building this campus was one of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs ' dying wishes, and there's video proof: An ailing Jobs went before the Cupertino City Council just months before his death  to pitch the project personally . (They approved it, unanimously, two years later.)

apple-park-distance-2

Apple Park is just a few minutes' drive from Infinite Loop.

Built on a concrete office park formerly owned by Hewlett-Packard, Apple Park sits on 175 acres in the heart of Silicon Valley, just a few minutes' drive from Apple's previous headquarters at 1 Infinite Loop. The spaceship wasn't finished, so we weren't allowed inside. Apple employees won't start moving in until the end of the year.

Instead, we visited two other buildings on campus -- the new Apple Park Visitor Center, which houses its own Apple retail store (which Apple are now calling "Town Squares"), and of course, the 1,000-seat Steve Jobs Theater where the company held its iPhone presentation.

The public cafe at the Apple Park Visitor Center.

In addition to the store, the Visitor Center hosts Apple's first-ever public cafe, plus an exhibit space currently being used to show off an augmented reality "experience" -- through the window of an iPad , you can hover over a 3-D model of the campus to see how it looks at different times of day, how traffic flows and where you can find a spot in Apple's giant detached parking structure.

The Steve Jobs Theater, meanwhile, is set on a small hill, a short walk above the Visitor Center. You reach it after walking up a lovely (though smelly -- they'd just fertilized the grounds) paved pathway, with trees and flowers all around. And then, you see it: a 20-foot-tall glass cylinder, 165 feet in diameter, with a roof that reflects the sky. It's a spaceship, too, on a smaller scale. And glass is the only thing holding that stunning roof up.

CNET editor-in-chief Connie Guglielmo poses with Steve Wozniak, Apple's co-founder and Bay Area legend, in front of the Steve Jobs Theater.

The glass dome is merely the foyer for the auditorium, which sits below ground. To get there, you take two curved glass elevators that rotate as they descend, or one of a pair of curved staircases that step down to the reception area and demo room for Apple's new products. A small sign hangs above the entrance to the auditorium, carved into the bare white stone. It simply reads "Steve Jobs Theater."

apple-park-steve-jobs-theater-4165

Inside the theater, the feeling is one of simple, elegant lines and designs. White, black, gray, brown. No jarring colors. Curved edges. Smooth surfaces. Serene is the word that comes to mind. We sit on squishy, comfortable brown leather seats, each with a power outlet built into the side, presumably so you never have to stop using your favorite Apple device.

The front few rows, which were used to seat VIPs like Disney's Bob Iger and director J.J. Abrams on Tuesday, are basically couches made of the same brown leather that curve, slightly, around the main stage. Curved is the theme.

Outside the theater again, standing in the courtyard, the nearly finished spaceship is visible in the background. The building looks massive, otherworldly, even at this distance.

The spaceship, as viewed from the Steve Jobs Theater.

The other thing we notice is how quiet and peaceful it is here -- quite a feat considering the campus sits adjacent to Interstate 280, one of the main arteries through the Silicon Valley. That quiet could be temporary, because Apple Park isn't really open yet to the tens of thousands of Apple employees and visitors who will make it their mecca, or merely want to visit the campus Jobs designed.

It's hard to believe, as Apple CEO Tim Cook noted in his opening dedication on Tuesday , that this now park-like campus was once an asphalt jungle of industrial office buildings surrounded by acres of parking lots.
