Hopefully, nothing goes wrong with your trip when you book through Expedia, and everything’s smooth sailing. However, since Expedia is only a middleman between you and the travel service companies, there is a greater chance that a mix-up will occur than if you book things directly with a hotel, airline, car rental company, or cruise line. This is the unfortunate trade-off for getting better deals on your trips.

Tips for Dealing with Expedia Customer Service

Unfortunately, there are many stories on the Internet about people who feel that Expedia’s customer service department hasn’t treated them very fairly. Regardless of how many of those stories are true or not, the fact of the matter is that we don’t work for Expedia, so we can’t change how their customer service department or their policies work.

The best that we can do for you is give you a set of general pointers so that you’re prepared to deal with Expedia’s customer service department, or one of their partnered travel company’s customer service departments, in case the worst should happen.

Read the fine print . Though we realize this is something that a lot of people don’t like or bother to do, it can save you some frustration when it comes to understanding why Expedia or a travel company isn’t doing much to help you. On the flip side, it can also be a source of evidence for you if you don’t think either of these groups is following their own policies.

Be patient, but persistent . Like most customer service departments of large companies, Expedia’s is very busy, and you should be prepared to be put on hold at points from times ranging from 10 minutes to 30 minutes, or even an hour. Do your best to keep calm and stay on the line for as long as you can. It’s the only way that you’ll make progress in solving the problem on Expedia’s end.

Ask for a supervisor or manager . Generally, the higher up the customer service ladder you go, the better the chance you’ll find someone who has the authority to act on your problem. Again, it may take some patience to get in touch with them, so be prepared for that.

Make physical/written copies of important information . This includes things like booking confirmations or any other special requests that you make through Expedia, such as specific seats on an airplane or a certain number of beds in a hotel room. This way, you have evidence on your side if there’s a problem.

Double-check your bookings with the actual travel companies . These companies are ultimately the ones you’re doing business with and providing the accommodations for your trip. Therefore, they have the final say when it comes to what you get. Plus, they’ll probably be more worried about having their public reputations damaged than Expedia will be.  After you book, call each travel company involved in your trip and ask for a written confirmation of anything specific that you’ve asked for through Expedia, such as a certain hotel room type or seat on an airplane. Or, better yet, record your phone call (and tell them you’re doing so for verification purposes) and ask for verbal confirmation that you’ll be getting exactly what you asked for. This puts the burden on them to back up their word.

Act early and often . The sooner you act and the more you work to resolve a problem, the greater the chance that you’ll be able to get a full refund, or at least some form of compensation. Plus, the problem will be off your mind and you’ll save yourself a nasty surprise.

Ask for physical records… or make your own! A good idea is to always ask for the name and employee ID number of any customer service representative whom you deal with. Also try asking the customer service representative to send you an email saying that they will fix the problem, and stay on the line until you receive it.  Or better yet, record the phone call, and tell the representative on the other end that you’re doing so for verification purposes. Again, this is so that you’ll have evidence to back up your claims if you’re having trouble solving the problem.

If all else fails, consider bringing in a third party . If neither Expedia nor the travel service at the heart of the problem is proving to be much help, consider going to a third party. Call your bank or credit card company and let them know what’s going on, and they may help you recover your money or stop Expedia or one of their partnered travel companies from charging you for anything that you shouldn’t have to pay for.  You may also want to file a complaint with a consumer advocacy group, such as the Better Business Bureau, and see if they will step in to help resolve the problem.

Expedia Group has unveiled a series of new products and services designed to make travel planning stress free.

Expedia Group has unveiled a series of new products and services designed to make travel planning stress free. At the company’s annual Explore conference, Expedia partners got an inside scoop on more than 40 new offerings, including its new travel media network , a shoppable storefront for content creators and new AI-powered solutions.    The new travel media network is a result of Expedia’s more than two decades of experience under its Media Solutions division. Using Expedia’s first-party traveler intent and purchase data, the media network can help advertising partners reach consumers via contextual and timely ads. Advertising partners will have access to onsite and offsite advertising capabilities, as well as an in-house creative team to support campaign development across platforms. Expedia media teams also will support advertisers by tapping into existing partnerships with a network of more than 60,000 partners, such as Netflix and Disney+ .

“Our robust, first-party data and network of industry-wide partnerships gives us the exclusive ability to translate traveler shopping behavior to actionable insights for our advertising partners,” said Rob Torres, SVP of Expedia Group Media Solutions in a statement. “Our travel media network targets travelers at various touch points on the journey with highly relevant travel content, driving conversion. We’ve only just scratched the surface with building bespoke media campaigns for partners, I’m excited for what’s to come.”

New Storefront Makes Influencer Travel Tips Shoppable  

Influencer marketing is expected to reach $24 billion in value by the end of this year, and the travel market is increasingly reaping the rewards of content created and shared online. With Travel Shops, Expedia is aiming to bridge the gap between creators’ travel recommendations and consumers’ purchases.     The Travel Shops storefront is designed to allow content creators to earn commission by creating a customized space where they share travel content. Consumers will be able to access these shops in one central place within the Expedia app, saving them the time and effort of scrolling on social media. Advertising partners will soon be able to benefit from this new venture by sponsoring travel influencers’ collections on their channels, according to Expedia, although the company did not provide a specific date for the launch of these capabilities.     “We saw an opportunity to reinvent how consumers interact with travel content on social media platforms,” said Jochen Koedijk, Chief Marketing Officer of Expedia Group in a statement. “Travel Shops are a first-of-its-kind travel platform that bridges the gap between content creators and travelers, creating a central hub for curated travel recommendations and a seamless shopping experience. Travel Shops give creators the tools to build unique marketplaces, making it easy to share travel recommendations and providing a more personalized experience for travelers.” 

Using AI to Make Traveling Easier  

AI is playing a critical role in Expedia’s product roadmap, with its new Romie “travel buddy” being the star of 40+ new features. Romie is an AI-powered assistant that can aid in planning, shopping and booking, and is even prepared to help if travel plans go awry.     Expedia describes it as a travel agent, concierge and personal assistant all in one, learning users’ behaviors and trip preferences and offering guidance along the way. Customers can invite Romie to join SMS group chats so it can add suggestions to live conversations, ask it to apply insights from text conversations to Expedia searches, and even ask the service to build trip itineraries. In the event travelers are faced with weather changes or disruptions that hinder their plans, Romie is designed to offer new suggestions and solutions.  

“We believe in re-imagining the traveler experience, and then using the latest in AI to bring it to life, and with Romie, we’ve done just that,” said Rathi Murthy, CTO of Expedia Group in a statement. “We created an AI assistant with hyper-personalization in mind so that travelers can choose when they want Romie’s help on their own terms. Romie can assist throughout dreaming, planning and traveling or even when things don’t go as planned, all while getting more intelligent as the traveler interacts.”    This summer, Expedia will unveil a host of other new AI-powered features, including a personalized itinerary builder for Expedia app users, self-service booking management capabilities, a more robust flight and hotel price comparison tool and even a destination comparison tool.

Expedia Group (EXPE) Aids Travelers & Partners With New Releases

Expedia Group EXPE recently introduced a slew of new products and features in a bid to boost the travel experiences of its customers.

The company unveiled Romie, the industry's first AI-based travel assistant designed to assist users in planning, shopping, booking and helping them with unexpected changes during trips. It learns about travelers' preferences, serving as a travel agent, concierge and personal assistant.

Expedia Group also leveraged its AI capabilities to unveil new tools for both travelers and destination partners. These include a personalized itinerary builder, self-service booking management, a Fraud Prevention as a Service (FPaaS) solution, AI-powered insights for a better guest experience, and a date-based cancellation policy. These features will be available on Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo globally this summer.

Apart from the AI-powered tools and features, Expedia Group launched Travel Shops, a new storefront that allows creators to share and save travel recommendations in one central place on the app.

The company also unveiled a travel media network, leveraging its first-party traveler intent and purchase data to reach more travelers. The network offers an in-house creative team, industry-leading advertising tools and offsite capabilities, enabling advertising partners to collaborate on campaigns, target high-intent travelers, and tap into Expedia Group's vast B2B network.

Expedia Group is expected to gain solid traction across domestic and foreign travelers on the back of its latest move.

Strengthening Portfolio Aids Growth

Apart from the latest releases, the company partnered with Block’s ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ solution provider, Afterpay, to facilitate an enhanced booking experience for travelers in Australia.

Per the terms, Expedia Group will now be able to offer travelers the flexibility of payments with Afterpay’s 'Pay in 4' product. Australian travelers can also use Expedia Group's Strategic Partnerships and Affiliate technology to explore and book over three million properties globally.

The company also partnered with Philippine Airlines P PAL to launch PAL Holidays, a comprehensive travel website for travelers in the United States, Canada, Australia, and the Philippines, offering easy planning and booking of flights, hotels, transportation and activities.

All the above-mentioned endeavors have added strength to EXPE’s travel booking and trip planning portfolio. This, in turn, is expected to drive its customer momentum across the globe.

Moreover, these launches will aid the company to capitalize on growth opportunities present in the global travel and tourism, as well as online travel booking market space. Per a Statista report, the global travel and tourism market is expected to hit $927.3 billion in 2024 and reach $1.06 trillion by 2028, indicating a CAGR of 3.5% during the forecast period of 2024-2028.

Solidifying prospects in these promising markets are expected to drive EXPE’s overall top-line performance in the near term.

The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2024 revenues is pegged at $11.86 billion, indicating growth of 22.4% year over year.

However, macroeconomic headwinds and rising geopolitical tensions remain concerns for the company. Its shares have lost 25.9% in the year-to-date period, underperforming the Zacks Computer & Technology sector’s growth of 10.3%.

Meanwhile, Booking Holdings’ subsidiary, Priceline, added a slew of generative AI-powered features to its Trip Intelligence suite, facilitating the trip planning and booking process for travelers to save time.
