Earlier this week food fans in North Staffordshire were treated to a taste of Greece - in Knypersley. The Travelling Taverna pitched up at Knypersley Sports and Social Club on Tuesday where those heading to the venue saw just how popular the venture is.

StokeonTrentLive has previously reported how the business has secured its first unit from where it will run a franchise operation in Uttoxeter. Those waiting for the wide range of mouth-watering Greek cuisine to come to them follow the Travelling Taverna's Facebook page for locations.

After treating foodies in Knypersley it was off to The Railway Inn at Froghall the following day. George Bunn, of StaffordshireLive, caught up with the business when it arrived at another Railway Inn - those on at Norton Bridge near Eccleshall . This is what secret diner George thought of it.

First impressions: The Traveling Taverna was set up in the car park to the right of the Railway Inn. People were parked up right along the road towards Izaak Walton's Cottage. After parking up, I noticed the car park was full. Obviously, it's a popular choice.

Speaking to landlord Steve Bainbridge, he said it was the busiest he had seen the car park. I decided to get a pint of the excellent Rainbow Trout ale brewed on site at the Izaak Walton Brewhouse. After this, I queued up for the food in the car park. Right from the queue, you could smell the amazing smells coming off the open grills. We could see them piling up the marinated chicken and halloumi slices onto the grates over the coals.

travelling taverna staffordshire

When our time came we picked the Chicken Souvlaki, The Mad Greek - described as a "Greek style chicken, a skewer of lamb, grilled halloumi and pork Gyros" - and Grilled Cypriot Halloumi Kebab. We topped this with a combo of lettuce, onions, feta cheese and garlic mayo.

So how did the food taste? Right from the first bite of salty halloumi with the creamy feta cheese, I knew that there was a reason why the car park was full. Each bite was absolutely delicious with the charred flatbread with the crisp lettuce and onion providing the perfect complement to the freshly cooked fillings.

For the meat-eaters, the Mad Greek was jam-packed with meat and salad and all kinds of toppings. It was perfect to satisfy even the most ravenous of carnivores. The lamb kebab was nicely spiced with cumin and mint with the traditional mini cucumber dip of tzatziki providing the perfect pairing for authentic Greek food experience.

travelling taverna staffordshire

The chicken in both the Mad Greek and the Marinated Chicken Souvlaki was very juicy and seasoned well. You could taste the oregano, basil, parsley, and dill plus the whole thing was dressed and grilled in olive oil. It was the perfect taste of the Mediterranean, as one of our party said stood on the sunny evening in the car park, 'It's just like being on holiday".

The travelling restaurant was started in 2020 during the Covid lockdown by Konstantinos 'Connie' Eleftheriou of the Bubble Inn gastro pubs group, which includes one in Tutbury, East Staffordshire. Mr Eleftheriou had been in the food industry for 12 years before setting up the franchise, which has run its pop-up taverna at pubs in Burton and Swadlincote.

A popular mobile taverna, which tours various East Midlands locations including Derbyshire pub car parks , is the latest eatery to go under the Secret Service microscope. The Travelling Taverna offers a wide range of Greek and Cypriot food, including freshly-prepared flatbreads and marinated chicken skewers, as well as vegetarian options.

The travelling restaurant was founded during the Covid lockdown in 2020 by well-known chef Konstantinos 'Connie' Eleftheriou of the Bubble Inn gastro pub chain. Since then, the mobile taverna has popped up in Derby suburbs including Mackworth and Alvaston, as well as wider county towns, such as Belper, Swadlincote and Chesterfield.

With the vendor set to open its first permanent unit in Uttoxeter, from where it will run a franchise operation, we decided now would be an ideal time to try it out. When the vendor came to The Railway Inn in Norton Bridge, near Eccleshall, in Staffordshire recently, our colleagues at Staffordshire Live sent a secret diner to see what they thought.

Staffordshire pub named best in UK - for second year

A Staffordshire pub has been named the best in the country - for the second year running. The Tamworth Tap, in Tamworth, has been named the Campaign for Real Ale's (CAMRA) National Pub of the Year 2023.

The top CAMRA honour was also bestowed on the pub last year. It is just the second pub to win the top prize two years in a row.

The brewpub is in the shadow of Tamworth's Norman castle, which can be seen from a beer terrace and courtyard at the back of the pub. Inside, the Tap has cosy upstairs rooms with Tudor features, and the bar features eight handpulls that offer a range of local Staffordshire ales, the Mirror reports .

Out front, patrons can enjoy cafe-style seating. Proprietors George and Louise Greenaway from the Tap said: “Words really can’t express how we feel right now.

"It took a while for the magnitude of the occasion to sink in when we won last year; to have retained it is beyond incredible. We vowed to continue to evolve, with the aim of providing the ultimate drinking experience to everyone who walks through our door.

“We aren’t just a pub; we are a hub of the community, and we aim to bring people together. That and the perfect pint is what it’s all about. Thank you to all at CAMRA, from branch to national level, for recognising what the Tap stands for. A huge thank you also to Team Tap for delivering our vision with such passion, commitment and enthusiasm – we share this recognition with you. And, to our beloved Tappers, we have such a special place because of you. Thank you for supporting us in all we do.”

CAMRA judges called the Tap "an excellent example of a pub at the centre of its community that supports a wide variety of diverse local activity groups". Judges said staff were "knowledgable" and "helpful," adding: "We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and look forward to returning at some time in the future,” they stated.

CAMRA awards director Laura Emson said: “The Tamworth Tap should be incredibly proud of this feat, to be named the best pub in the UK two times on the trot is a remarkable achievement. The pub encapsulates everything that CAMRA aims to promote and protect, and each member of the team deserves the recognition twice over!

“A pub doesn’t have to be a national award winner to be a vital part of a local community and following a tough few years for the industry, our support is needed more than ever.”

John Rowling, pubs officer for CAMRA's Lichfield, Sutton & Tamworth branch, said: “What a sensational achievement! Just twelve months ago we were toasting the Tamworth Tap being crowned CAMRA National Pub of the Year for 2022. At the time, the owners, staff and customers were absolutely overjoyed and brimming with pride at the Tap’s success. Now here we are again with the Tamworth Tap winning CAMRA National Pub of the Year for a second time in consecutive years.

“The success has been built on continuous hard work, dedication and attention to detail to make the Tap a splendid community asset. Congratulations to George, Louise and the team for another tremendous accolade."

Pubs in the competition are selected by CAMRA volunteers and judged on their atmosphere, decor, welcome, service, community focus and the quality of the beer.

Fantastic views and old Russian architecture, and the church with St.Savva.

This is a very old monastery established by St.Savva in 15th centure, and it was also a fortress and a seasonal residence of Russian tzar and his wife. You will see fantastic views of meadows, hills and forests of the central Russia.

It's one of the places that are part of the "Golden Ring" , it's the closest to Moscow . If you are interested in Russian culture/ history , it's the must! There are many small nice restaurants around, as well as hotels. Magnificent place , very powerful and truly Russian . Unspoiled beauty!

Thrilled to see that the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery already has a such a wealth of positive reviews; I totally concur and will consequently attempt to keep my own comments relatively brief. A peaceful place offering some lovely views out across the surrounding countryside. Especially recommended for long-term Moscow dwellers needing a break from the teeming metropolis. Though other reviewers have already mentioned this, I would be remiss if I omitted to say that as this is a working Russian Orthodox place of worship, some sort of head-scarf is recommended for women. As a man, I feel a somewhat awkward saying that, but it's definitely worth knowing. My only regret about my own visit is that we didn't buy more pastries from the on-site bakery, the ones we did have were truly delicious. I would say take large bags with you and stock up, but I am not sure how the full-time residents of the monastery would feel about me advocating baked-goods-based gluttony!

It's an ancient Church opened not so long ago after closing by Soviets. Must visit to feel Russian people and Russian soul. Do not forget that it's a male monastery so consider to wear long dresses with sleeves.

Quiet, with a wonderful architecture. But, ladies, do not forget that it is not for tourists, so cover heads and legs !

Well restored with well-maintained grounds (lots of flowers in July) with a separate spring easily reachable by drive or walk from the main compound. The buildings are colorful and the churches beautiful. A simple cafe near the spring offers a chance to rest and eat excellent baked goods. Worth the visit.

Best places for afternoon teas in every town in Staffordshire

Mother's Day is coming up and this would be the perfect way to treat your mum and show her how much you love her

  • 07:32, 20 MAR 2022

Tasty afternoon tea

One of the most quintessential traditions of British cuisine is a good afternoon tea. Whether it be a tea, coffee, there is nothing better than a chat over some hot drinks and sandwiches and cake of course.

And with Mothering Sunday just around the corner there is no better way to tell your mum how much she means to you than treating her to a trip out and a beautiful tea. It could be cucumber sandwiches, Victoria sponge cake or a cream tea with scones. While a super posh Fortnum and Mason afternoon tea might be out of many people price range - and too far to travel all the way to London, there are still so many amazing places people can visit to order a tea from right here in Staffordshire.

Afternoon teas are steeped in history, the tradition is largely credited to Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, when in 1840 afternoon tea was created because the duchess would become hungry at around 4pm. The evening meal in the Bedford household was served at 8pm, as was fashionable at the time, which left a long gap between lunch and dinner, and so afternoon tea was born.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

travelling taverna staffordshire

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

travelling taverna staffordshire

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

travelling taverna staffordshire

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

travelling taverna staffordshire

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

travelling taverna staffordshire

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

travelling taverna staffordshire

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

travelling taverna staffordshire

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
