In addition, foreigners can extend their Vietnam visa without leaving the country while visa renewal requires expats to leave Vietnam and then enter with a new visa.

2. Policy of Vietnam visa extension during Covid19

Due to the outbreak of Covid19, the Vietnam Immigration Department has released the policy of automatic Vietnam visa extension. Therefore:

  • Those who come to Vietnam after March 1, 2020 and are stuck in the country by the pandemic will be automatically extended their visa until November 30, 2020. It means you will not be subjected to fine, or penalty if you exit Vietnam by November 30, 2020 due to being stranded here.
  • Those who come to Vietnam before March 1, 2020 can be also applicable for the policy, but they are required to show documents proving they couldn’t depart from the country because of the Covid 19.

Can I Extend My Vietnam eVisa?

extend vietnam evisa

If you want to stay in Vietnam with an eVisa for longer than 90 days, you may be able to apply for an extended stay.

There are different ways to spend more time in Vietnam. Travelers can request a visa extension or renewal from within Vietnam, or depart the country and apply for another eVisa.

The difference between Vietnam visa extension and renewal is explained below. You can also find out how and when to apply for a new Vietnam eVisa instead of an extension.

What’s the Difference Between a Vietnam Visa Extension and a Visa Renewal?

There are 2 ways to extend the length of your stay in Vietnam without leaving the country : Vietnam visa extension and renewal.

Although both result in an extended stay in Vietnam, they are different procedures.

What is a Vietnam visa extension?

Vietnam visa extension is for foreigners who want to stay in Vietnam longer without applying for a new visa . You can apply for an extension of up to 1 month.

Your passport is stamped and credited with the extension time, but no new visa sticker is issued.

What is a Vietnam visa renewal?

Vietnam visa renewal is also for foreigners who wish to stay in Vietnam beyond their existing visa. Travelers who renew their visa get a new visa stamp and sticker in their passport.

Check with your nearest immigration office to make sure this service is available at your time of travel.

Requirements to Extend or Renew a Vietnam Visa

The requirements to extend or renew a Vietnam tourist visa are the same. You’ll need:

  • 1. A passport that’s valid for at least 6 months
  • 2. A completed NA5 form
  • 3. Payment of the extension or renewal fees

Travelers need a passport valid for at least 6 months and with at least 2 blank pages.

When should I get my Vietnam visa renewed or extended?

It’s illegal to overstay your visa. You must apply for an extension or renewal before your visa expires.

It usually takes around a week to get your Vietnamese visa extended or renewed. You should apply at least 7 business days before your visa expires to allow time for processing.

You cannot apply for a visa extension before you enter Vietnam.

Where Can I Apply for a Visa Extension in Vietnam?

To get a visa extension or renewal in Vietnam, you’ll need to visit an official immigration office.

Here, you can see the locations of some key immigration offices in different regions of Vietnam.

Business hours are generally 8 - 11.30 a.m. and 1.30 - 4 p.m. from Monday to Friday. Some offices also open on Saturday mornings.

How to Extend an eVisa from Outside Vietnam

Another option for travelers wishing to spend more time in Vietnam is to leave the country, apply for a new eVisa , and return using the new visa.

There are no limits on issued visas, and you do not have to spend a certain number of days outside the country before returning.

This may be a convenient option if you’re staying close to Vietnam’s borders with Cambodia , Laos, or Thailand and wish to visit other southeast Asian countries during your trip.

Before traveling, you’ll need to check the visa requirements for each country you wish to visit. Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos all have electronic visa applications.

Urgent eVisa renewals for Vietnam

Applying for a new eVisa from outside Vietnam is also a good option for travelers who have left it too late to apply for an extension .

It takes around 7 business days to process a visa extension at a Vietnamese Immigration Office. To avoid overstaying your original Vietnam visa, you can depart the country and reapply.

How to apply for a new eVisa for Vietnam

The Vietnam eVisa application can be completed from anywhere in the world from your smartphone or another electronic device.. You do not need to be in your home country to apply.

You must still meet Vietnam’s eVisa requirements to apply. Eligible travelers can repeat the 3-step process completed when making their original application:

  • Fill out the Vietnam eVisa application form
  • Pay the eVisa fees and submit the application
  • Receive the Vietnam eVisa by email

Vietnam eVisa processing is fast , most applicants receive their entry permit in a few days. On approval, you can return to Vietnam with the new visa.

Note : A visa does not guarantee entry . Vietnam border authorities review travel documents and have the right to grant or deny entry.

How Much Does a Vietnam Visa Extension Cost?

Immigration office fees can vary according to your nationality, and whether you wish to process an extension or renewal of your visa. Generally, visa extensions and renewals cost between USD 25 and USD 95.

The fees to apply for a new eVisa from outside Vietnam are the same as for the original application. You can pay for the eVisa securely online by debit or credit card.

If you are planning to visit Vietnam soon, you might want to know about some new changes in the visa policy that will take effect from August 15, 2023. According to Resolution 127 of the government, Vietnam will offer electronic visas for citizens of all countries and territories who enter through any of the 42 international border gates. The electronic visas will be valid for up to 90 days and can be used for single or multiple entries. Moreover, Vietnam will extend the visa exemption period for 13 countries from 15 days to 45 days. These countries are: UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Belarus, Japan and South Korea. These changes are expected to boost tourism and trade between Vietnam and other countries.

In order to get Vietnam Visa, applicants will be required to pay Visa service fee and Stamping fee. For those people choosing to get Vietnam Embassy Visa, both of these fees will be collected by staff working there. In this case, visa fee is not fixed because each Embassy of Vietnam requires a different fee.

The most popular type of visa for Vietnam is a tourist visa, which is normally valid for 15-90 days. You can apply for a 3-month tourist visa, but the procedure will be the same as for a 1-month visa. In other words, the validity of a Vietnamese tourist visa can range from 15 days to 3 months. If you need to stay in Vietnam for longer than 30 days, you will need to apply for a long-term visa. There are several types of long-term visas available, including business visas, student visas, and work visas. The requirements for these visas vary depending on the type of visa you are applying for. You can apply for a tourist visa at a Vietnamese embassy or consulate in your home country, or you can apply for an e-visa online. The e-visa is a convenient option, but it is only available for citizens of certain countries. To apply for a tourist visa, you will need to provide the following documents: A passport that is valid for at least six months A completed visa application form A recent passport-sized photo A visa fee If you are applying for a long-term visa, you will need to provide additional documents, such as a letter of invitation from a Vietnamese sponsor, a proof of financial support, and a medical certificate. The processing time for a tourist visa varies, but it is typically 3-5 working days. The processing time for a long-term visa can be longer, up to 15 working days.

About visa on arrival, to get this visa issued, each subtype of fee is required to pay for two separate steps. In more details, visa service fee is charged to process preapproved visa letter and stamping fee is paid to grant an official visa stamped onto passenger’s passport. Unlike embassy visa, the cost of Vietnam visa online is quoted clearly for each visa type at Vietnam visa fee page.

In order to request visa, foreign travelers can visit Vietnam Embassy and apply in person or apply online for visa upon arrival, or e-visa. Among these ways, getting Vietnam visa upon arrival and obtaining an e-visa are more recommended than the other option because of their simplicity of procedure.

  • Step 3: Return to the embassy. If your application is approved, get your original passport back with the visa affixed to it.

Only air travelers can apply for a visa on arrival. No need to travel back and forth to the Embassy in person and flexibility in the long duration of stay and entry times, visa-on-arrival is one of the most convenient ways for tourists coming to Vietnam.

  • Step 1: Contact a Vietnam visa agency to apply for a pre-approved visa letter online. This letter is compulsory for boarding the plane and getting a visa stamp at Vietnam airports. The service fee is varied by agency.
  • Step 2: Print the visa approval letter and visa application form provided by the agency. Fill up the visa application form and prepare all documents before the flight.
  • Step 3: Present the visa approval letter and all documents needed (02 passport-sized photos, original passport, and stamping fee in cash) to get a visa stamp at one of 8 international airports in Vietnam.

E-visa is applied for citizens of 80 countries all over the world and those entering Vietnam via one of 33 designated ports including airports, seaports, and landports. Travelers do not need to submit an original passport and prepare too many documents, and all procedures are conducted online which is much time-saving for travelers.

  • Step 1: Access e-visa’s official website at https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/web/guest/trang-chu-ttdt and provide full information (portrait photo, photo of passport data page, personal information and your trip schedule). Save the Registration Code provided.
  • Step 2: Pay the fee (USD25).
  • Step 3: Check the result by Registration Code via Search Menu bar on the website. Download the visa and print a hard copy for use at the airport.

Questions and Answers (18)

If coming from Ireland which is the better option for visa? I’m only staying for 9 days and won’t be leaving during that time. Would the e-visa suit or would I be better getting it when I arrive at the airport? Thanks.

Hello Barry, if you are not in a rush, then an e-visa is a much better option, as you do not need to wait at the Vietnam airport for the visa stamp procedure, and it is also cheaper than a visa on arrival.

We enter Vietnam by air on 15/2/24, we leave by Song Tien landport on the 21/2/24. We then renter Vietnam by air on the 1/3/24 and leave by air on the 13/3/24. What visa do we require?

Hello, if you hold a valid UK passport, we can confirm that you do not need a visa for either of the entries mentioned above.

How far in advance can you apply for a tourist visa

Hello, you can apply anytime in advance at your convenience because the e-visa will be valid from the date you choose during the application process.

My wife and I are American citizens and have used eVisa. We have uploaded all our information, and each have registration codes. Our American Express payments apparently didn’t go through, and we have now gotten instructions to Pay E-visa Fee at VietCombank payment gateway (accepted by Vietnam Immigration Department) and we bith agreed. Is this at Hanoi airport and does that mean we have a Visa once we pay it (25 US each)? Thank you.

Hello, the e-visa fees must be paid upfront, so we recommend checking your application status for payment updates or arranging to pay again if needed.

I am coming to March in Vietnam. I am Turkey citizen for 15 day. I need Visa for Vietnam

@Shahzad, Yes, you will need a visa for Vietnam and you can apply for an e-visa through the official website below:

https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/web/guest/home

I'm an Italian citizen coming to Vietnam for a 21days holiday. Do I need to apply for an E-Visa or I can just come using my 45days visa-free?

@Simone Balestri, You do not need a visa for a 21-day holiday. Just bring your valid passport, and you will be granted a 45-day visa-free stay.

I am travelling to Vietnam for a holiday in March and want to apply for an e-visa. the touring company require a visa number before December. is the E-visa valid for 30days from the date of arriving in Vietnam or from when I get the visa, Thanks Barbara

@Barbara Kay Treglown, The e-visa is valid starting from the date you select on the form, for example, 01 March 2024. You can apply for an e-visa now to plan your trip to Vietnam for next year!

My passport has only been valid since 28/08/2023. Will I have a problem in getting a visa to Vietnam?

@Julie Zikovic, Do you mean August 28, 2024? Since it is already September 2023, you won't have any issues if you enter and exit before February 2024.

Can i apply for visa 7 months before travel?

@melissa oconnor, That is fine. You can apply for a visa 7 months in advance. The evisa will be valid from the date you choose on the form, not from the date you submit your application.

i´m portuguese and i´m traveling to da nang ,do i need to apply for a visa in advance or just when i arrive at the airport in da nang?

@paulo dias, There is no direct visa on arrival option at Vietnam airports. It is advised that you apply online for an e-visa before your trip instead!

Hello. I have a UK passport, if I arrive to Vietnam via a land checkpoint do I need to apply for a visa in advance? Also when arriving in Vietnam is proof of exit from the country required? Thanks

@Philip Smith, You (As a UK national) do not need any visa or proof of travel to enter Vietnam overland, all you need is your valid passport and make sure your stay is less than 15 days!

When applied for my Visa, my original destination was Da Nang. Now my destination has changed to Hue. Would I be able to enter the country through Hue’s airport instead of Da Nang?

@Nguyen Vo, The e-visa is valid for the entry point that you registered in the application form. Therefore, if you decide to enter through a different checkpoint, please apply for a new e-visa with the updated entry point.

Hi I am travelling with a Chilean Passport for less than 30 days, do I need to do anything before I travel?

@Carlos, Chilean passports are exempt from visa for Vietnam for 90 days, so you just need your valid passport to enter Vietnam!

Hi , I will be traveling to ho chi minh city in sept , 2023. I am holding a canadian passport. How can i apply a 1 month multiple entry visa. Due to I will travel to japan in between my stay in vietnam. So I will need to have 2 visa to entry to ho chi minh city.

@Winifred Tong, Multiple entry e-visas will be available soon in June/July this year, so please wait for the new visa policy before applying for a visa.

Hi..I will go to Vietnam for 2 months. I am following my husband for work. Do I need to apply any kind of visa? Seems stated here that Malaysia is exempt for visa. Does it mean I can stay there for 2 months without applying visa?

@Ameerah Rosly, Malaysian passport holders are exempt from a visa for Vietnam for 30 days, not 2 months. Therefore, if you plan to stay for more than 30 days, you are required to apply for a 3-month visa.

I have an Italian passport. I want to fly to Vietnam for a 2 day stay and fly out again. Can i just fly in or do i need to apply for any kind of visa?

@Sergio, You do not need a visa for a 2-day stay in Vietnam, just bring your valid passport for your entry!

Thank you for the previous answer! We plan on exiting vietnam into either Laos through the Lao Bao landport or into China through Friendship pass/Ai Nam Quan pass. However, we can't see Friendship pass listed in the evisa application form. Is it possible to exit Vietnam into China through this landport and if so which option do we chose in the application form? Also, if we later decide to exit through a different port such as into Cambodia instead of China or Laos, would this be a problem if the exit port we chose on the application form does not match the one we exit through at the time?

@Coco, Friendship border gate or in Vietnamese "Huu Nghi landport" is listed on the #12 as you can see below:

https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/documents/20181/117155/List-of-evisa-port.pdf/c774e24b-1ab8-4fb6-9ac1-dcdfaccecf8e

For your second question, you can exit through a different port of exit and it may not cause any issues. However, we advise that you make a clear plan to avoid changes at a later date.

Hello, if we enter the country with a 30 day visa and then leave after 30 days how soon can we re-enter the country for another 30 days? Thanks

@Coco, As long as you obtain a new visa, you can re-enter Vietnam without any issues. There is no waiting time requirements for each entry into Vietnam.

Frequently asked questions

1. how long is a travel visa valid.

A travel visa is valid for 1 to 3 months. The maximum stay for each entry is 30 days. In fact, there is 1-year multiple entry visa yet only available for US passport holders.

2. Can I change my tourist visa to another visa?

Yes. Tourist visas can be converted to other types such as work visas, investment visas, relative-visit visas, study visas,... if foreigners fully meet the conditions of the switched visas.

3. Can I use this visa to do my short-term business work?

No. Tourist visas allow foreigners to enter Vietnam for traveling purposes only. If you use a travel visa to work, both foreigners and related enterprises/companies will be fined.

4. How many times can I extend my travel visa?

You can extend your travel visa only once when arriving in Vietnam. The maximum stay for each entry is not exceeding 30 days.

5. When should I extend my visa?

Since the process takes a few working days, you should apply for the extension around 5-7 days before it expires. Foreigners need to exit Vietnam and re-enter Vietnam after a stay of 30 days. Overstay may result in more difficulties in visa extension and that you may be forced to leave Vietnam.

6. My passport will expire in 3 months, can I extend a tourist visa for another month?

No. Visa extension requires an original passport with a minimum validity of 6 months. Hence, you need to renew your passport at the Embassy in Vietnam before extending your visa.

7. Is a tourist e-visa applied for multiple entries?

Currently, e-visa is still applied for single entry and a duration of a maximum of 30 days. However, the validity is supposed to increase to 90 days and multiple entries could be applied from August 2023 according to the proposal of the government.

Official: Evisa is now available for 90 days, multiple entry.

Basically, you will need a visa when you visit another country. If the foreign country that you plan to visit has a visa agreement with your home country, this would most likely mean that you don’t need a visa before entering that country. On the other hand, if there is no visa agreement between the host country and the home country, then having a visa is a must before you travel.

Differences Between an Immigrant and Non-Immigrant Visa

Differences Between Immigrant and Non-Immigrant Visa

There are a lot of cases where people use tourist or travel visas, yet they stay in the host country for a longer period. Therefore, you need to understand the differences between immigrant and non-immigrant visas if you want to stay longer in the host country.

An immigrant visa allows the bearer permanent residence in the host country. Meanwhile, a non-immigrant visa only allows a person to stay in the host country for some amount of time that is mentioned in the visa document.

There are two ways to extend a visa in Vietnam. The first one is a visa extension, which enables you to remain in Vietnam without leaving. You will get a new stamp that shows a new date of exit.

The second option is to renew your visa; this will give you a new visa page and a new visa stamp for your passport. The visa extension would usually cost more due to the cost of new visa stickers and stamps.

However, it is the Vietnam Immigration Office that will decide whether a visa should be extended or renewed. The decision relates to the current visa status.

Vietnamese backpacker Joy finds community in the outback town of Birdsville

Joy taking a selfie smiling on a red sand dune.

Joy Nguyệt says arriving in outback Queensland from Vietnam to swarms of flies in an isolated and dusty town was initially terrifying.

"I was a bit worried at that time and I sent a picture to my parents, and they said I cannot stay here," she said.

"They said, 'Where are the people?' There's nothing."

A sign reading 'Birdsville Airport' in front of a landing strip with a small plane on it.

The 29-year-old landed in Birdsville, 1,500 kilometres west of Brisbane, expecting a bustling airport but instead walked straight off the runway and across the road to the local hotel.

But it's been seven months and Joy, or Ánh as she's known back home, has chosen to extend her stay in the small outback town.

Birdsville, with its population of 110, is situated on the edge of the Munga-Thirri Simpson desert and is known for its rolling red sand dunes and events like the Big Red Bash.

But it's the locals and day to day life working at the roadhouse that have Joy hooked.

"I like the life, I like the people," she said.

"You get to know them better than living in a city."

A woman stands in the middle of a road with nothing as far as the eye can see in every direction.

Joy was working remotely as a recruiter when she felt it was time for a new adventure, and decided to travel to Australia on a working holiday visa.

She saw a post on a community Facebook page from a previous Vietnamese employer at the town's roadhouse, a one-stop shop for fuel, groceries, and a friendly conversation.

"Every people [sic] in town come to the roadhouse to buy things and I get to know people that way," she said.

A young woman standing in front of the door into the road house with signs saying happy birthday joy.

True to her name, the locals love her, and some are even teaching her how to drive.

Resident Greg Watkins spends his Sunday afternoons jumping in the car with Joy.

Like many people in town, Mr Watkins wears many hats and refers to himself as an "odd jobs man".

"I thought, 'Well there's no driving instructors out here' and rather than her jumping in a car and driving around vacant country roads, she needs to learn how to drive correctly," he said.

Driving around the streets of Birdsville – or street rather – is quite different to driving in the city.

"We've only got two give way signs in town and no roundabouts.

"I try and create traffic for her while she's driving, and I'll say there's a car on your right."

Mr Watkins says Joy is a quick learner.

"I call her a bit of a sponge, ever since she's got here she's wanted to learn things and takes a lot of things in," he said.

"She's come from a community where there's lots and lots of people, to a town where there's very few.

"She worked right through the summer in 40 degrees, day after day, and didn't complain."

Word of mouth keeps outback businesses staffed

Backpackers like Joy keep the outback turning, particularly in the busy season.

A couple of hundred kilometres away, Windorah has a population of about 100 people and, like Birdsville, can see tens of thousands travel through during the tourist season between April and October.

Marilyn Simpson, the owner of the only pub in town, said they "need the backpackers to be able to function".

"There were some scary times post-COVID when so many people hit the outback and we couldn't do it, we didn't have the staff," she said.

While numbers are "back to normal" now, things are set to change yet again.

From July 1, British backpackers — who make up the largest population of working holiday makers – will no longer have to complete 88 days of regional work, prompting fears of an outback worker shortage.

But Ms Simpson isn't too concerned.

"This year I've got predominantly Italian and Argentinian and that is because of … word of mouth."

Reputation travels fast in the world of backpacking – one worker from last season recommends a friend for the next, until the pub is filled with Argentinian backpackers.

Ms Simpson said she prefers this method rather than hiring through agencies, which she calls a "costly exercise".

"I like meeting them and sharing our culture and sharing their experience," she said.
