See Michelangelo's frescoed ceiling in the Sistine Chapel

One of the most important structures of the Catholic faith, the Vatican City’s Sistine Chapel is a must-see on a tour of Italy. Though the chapel walls have witnessed centuries of worship, it’s the renaissance ceiling paintings of Michelangelo that will leave you in awe.

Visit the glamorous Isle of Capri

Enjoy the classic Italian summer in Italy’s picture-perfect Gulf of Naples. Famed for its crystal grottos, dramatic coastlines and endless glamour, our trips to Italy are complete with a day of freedom spent under a striped umbrella, watching sailboats pass by.

Cruise your way through Venice

The charm found in the canals of Venice is nothing short of irresistible. Admire gothic palaces and postcard bridges whilst adrift in a gondola, gaining an understanding of life in a city that floats. Exploring a city by foot will never be the same after a trip to Venice.

Journey to the well-preserved ruins of Pompeii

An unfathomable history lesson is found in the archaeological ruins of Pompeii. Buried and preserved by the ash of a volcano eruption in the year 79, in this Italian town you will discover the progressive life of early Roman times as you walk within the parameters of an open-air time capsule of life on Earth.

Go shopping in Italy's fashion capital Milan

Armani, Gucci, Prada and Versace. These are some of the prestigious fashion brands that call the Italian city of Milan home. In between yearning through boutiques and department stores, stop to sample the city’s delicacies like breaded veal cutlet and ossobuco.

Our top 5 things to do in Italy

It's the moments of quiet stillness that take your breath away on a Trafalgar tour through Italy. Sitting in the calm halls of the Vatican. Floating on the canals of Venice. Standing beside the ruins of Pompeii.

Uffizi Gallery

The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of art’s true masters are found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo dress Uffizi’s grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River will show you the building’s architectural brilliance.

Vatican Museums

From the intricate ceiling by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel to the detailed Pope portraits from the 16th century to today, you will be lost for words once inside this blessed museum complex.

Best museums in Italy

The epicenter of the Catholic faith and the birthplace of art’s most renowned masters. Our guided tours of Italy will take you to the many museums found here, whether in the Sistine Chapel, by the canals of Venice or in the grand galleries of Tuscany.

The authentic carbonara experience will take place in Rome, covered in salty Pecorino Romano cheese. A simple dish inspiring heart-warming meal times, this pasta will connect you with Italy’s rich culinary customs - an impressive evolution from its supposed heritage as a coal-miner’s meal.

Pollo alla Cacciatora

Literally translating to ‘hunter’ in Italian, cacciatore offers an appreciation for Italy’s meals of days gone by. Typically a preparation of rabbit or chicken, it’s the simmering tomato stew that makes this dish so mouthwatering. Satisfy a genuine hunger and consume with hand-ripped bread.

Italy tours are best served with an oversized slice of tiramisu. Cementing this country's obsession with espresso, this cake of layered biscuits soaked in coffee is the perfect after hours pick-me-up before an evening stroll through the charming streets.

Best food in Italy

A date with Italian food will likely start and end with a slice of pizza. But it’s the menu items that we share with you in between that will take your appreciation to new heights; think cacciatore and Carbonara with a slice of tiramisu in between.

What to pack for Italy

People packing for a tour

A classic linen outfit

The Italians are famous for their equal parts glamorous and effortless dress sense. Look the part with a few ensembles featuring classic linens in navy and white.

A blank journal

With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Italy, you might find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to remember the traditional Italian recipes you learn.

With such a large expanse of space to explore, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about Italian history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.

A small blanket

When exploring the soul-stirring setting of Tuscany, a picnic may call. Come prepared with a small blanket to cover in wine and cheese.

Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes

A classic memoir that brought the romance of Tuscany to the world, there’s no better time to read this book than when venturing through the country yourself.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and reusable toiletry bottles.

Best time for travel reflections of italy.

While just about any month is great to visit Italy, there are a few prime times of the year for the Reflections of Italy tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.

Throughout Italy, the most popular times to visit are April, May, June, September, and October. Along the coast, July and August are busy with locals and Europeans on summer holiday, while cities are usually less crowded.

Winter: Go in December, January, and February for Venice, where you can take a walk beside the canals on a quiet evening and hear your footsteps echoing off the water.

Spring: Enjoy Italy in the spring season, with fewer tourists and comfortable temperatures. In March, the weather is warm, but not too hot. Just imagine exploring the towns’ cobblestone streets during this quieter time of year.

Fall: After the busy summer season, you’ll encounter more of the locals. Fall is a fantastic season to travel in Tuscany, with fewer crowds, cooler days, and a bit of foliage to enjoy – all pairing well with a glass of red wine!

A grand tour – in a small, intimate group... a trip of a lifetime through the most sought-after destinations in Italy with names like the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, Rome, Venice and Florence...

Ferragamo museum & wine tasting, private classical recital in umbria, private classical music recital in a frescoed music room.

Between the late 16th century and the 1960s, a grand estate in the small Umbrian town of San Martino in Campo near Perugia was inhabited by members of the noble Donini family. What began as two 17th-century villas of the summer residence of the Donini counts became at the turn of the 21st century the hotel Alla Posta dei Donini, boasting many authentically restored features from centuries past. One of these is a sitting room that was primarily used for concerts, decorated with frescoed walls and ceilings painted by artists from the school of noted 18th-century painter Francesco Appiani. Fittingly, it's in this magnificent setting that you'll enjoy a private classical music recital for Tauck guests only!

Tauck Exclusive – Vatican Museums after hours

Explore the treasures of the vatican museums and the sistine chapel... without the crowds.

Founded by Pope Julius II in the early 1500s, the Vatican Museums display classical and religious works of art collected by the popes throughout the centuries. Combined with the Sistine Chapel, they're visited by around six million people a year, ranking among the most-visited art museums in the world. On your exclusive, after-hours, guided visit, you can explore the Candelabra Gallery, the Map Gallery, the Tapestries, and the Sistine Chapel… all without the usual crowds. So you'll be able to take your time to contemplate the inspirational treasures before you – including the spectacular biblical frescoes on the ceiling, which took Michelangelo four years to paint, standing on a scaffold... and changed the course of western art.

This was a trip of a lifetime and I chose it because I felt the itinerary allowed me to experience the best Italy had to offer. All my expectations were met and exceeded!

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Italy; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Please note: The name and address of your Venice hotel can be found in the personal travel documents you received via email from Tauck. Read the Privacy Policy by clicking the link (this will activate the check box), then check the box and select "Next."
  • If you are traveling with friends or family, select "Add Holder" and fill out their details. Complete this step for everyone in your travel party, then select "Next."
  • On the Contact Information page: If you select PHONE you will need to enter your phone number and then make a toll-free call to the number listed on the subsequent page, within the indicated time. If you select EMAIL you will need to enter your email address, and you will then receive an OTP code via that email address to enter on the subsequent page of the application.
  • Verify that all the information you've entered is correct, then click "Confirm."
  • You will then be brought to a page where you can download the required QR code for your visit to Venice. (We recommend emailing the QR code to yourself, to ensure easy access to it later.) Please note that you will need to keep your QR code with you throughout your time in Venice, as failure to do so may result in a fine.

Deposits & Final Payment

Deposits and fees for the optional Protection Plan or Cancel Fee Waiver [CFW] coverage are due at time of booking.

The deposit amount is $600 per person

Final Payments:

Final Payment is due to Tauck  60  days before departure for lands trips, and  120  days before departure for cruises and rail journeys. If your deposit was made by credit card, final payment will be automatic unless you opted out at time of booking. Bookings without full payment at this time may be subject to cancellation without notice. Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $559  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

60 days or more before departure = $600 per person

59-8 days before departure = $900 per person

7-1 days before departure = $1500 per person

Time of cancellation will be when notice is received in our Wilton Woods, CT office.

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control, Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Note:  All Guests, regardless of residency, who book a Tauck journey have the option of purchasing the Cancellation Waiver provided by Tauck in the event they need to cancel their trip after making their reservations. Tauck's Guest Protection, which includes both the Cancellation Fee Waiver and the Travel Insurance Benefits and Assistance Services described above, is not available to residents of Puerto Rico.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S., no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Italy. For complete vaccination and inoculation information please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information regarding vaccinations that may be required for your journey. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here.

If you are a resident of another country, please contact an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Classic Italy covers 1,270 mi (2,043 km) and, though paced to accommodate all our guests, is nonetheless an active and extensive tour. To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Italy is home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, some dating from antiquity. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture will present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. You will encounter cobblestone streets, narrow passageways, and some steep and winding staircases. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do at the various sites and towns is at your discretion.

In addition, coach travel along the many "Yellow Roads" on this tour are very windy and may cause you some discomfort if you are prone to motion sickness. If you are, we advise bringing motion sickness remedies or medication with you.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The weather in Italy is temperate and unpredictable. Generally, spring and fall average high temperatures range from 55 to 75°F (13 to 24°C) and summer high temperatures range from 75 to 85°F (24 to 29°C). Rain falls evenly throughout the year in Venice, but more seasonally in Rome and Sorrento, where summers are dryer than winters. Venice experiences very high humidity, with hot weather in July and August. Due to its location on the Adriatic coast, Venice often experiences thunderstorms and rain showers which, particularly in spring and autumn, tend to cause flooding, known as the 'acqua alta'.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

When packing for your trip to Italy, it is important to keep in mind the time of year you are traveling and the current weather conditions for that time. The climate of northern Italy ranges from Alpine near Switzerland to continental along the Po River to Venice. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket for men are acceptable dining attire. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but certainly be comfortable.

Most Catholic churches in Italy require that your knees and shoulders be covered when you enter, even during the hot days of summer. You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. By law in Italy, irons and ironing boards are not made available to guests at hotels. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to northern Italy:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

How to Plan a Trip to Italy

By Chris Allsop

Last updated: May 18th, 2024

How to plan a trip to Italy - Colosseum, Rome

  • Find a Cruise

There’s a lot to consider when planning a trip to Italy, one of Europe’s most irresistible destinations. Its abundance of history, culture, and spellbindingly beautiful cities mean that it’s also one of the best places to visit more than once.

As such, it’s important to carefully research how to plan a trip to Italy so your journey attains the heights that one expects of this Old World favorite. Once you’re an expert at the preparation, you can begin planning your next trip as soon as you’re home.

Here are the steps you need to plan your trip.

Consider Where You’d Like to Go

How to plan a trip to Italy - Portofino

Figuring out which part of the country you’d like to visit is probably the most difficult part of traveling to Italy. From the northern top of the “boot” to its southerly pointed “toe”, the Italian peninsula is a unity of sunny Mediterranean landscapes, remarkable cities , and blissful beaches.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor to the country or are simply unsure where to go in Italy next, here’s a quick overview of the perennially popular options.

Umbrellas lined up on Monterosso Beach in Cinque Terre

Monterosso al Mare, Cinque Terre

From the north, the Italian Riviera is a mountain-backed swathe of pastel-colored seaside resorts. Part of the Italian region of Liguria, headline destinations here include Portofino and the Cinque Terre. Besides these picturesque fishing villages, Liguria is also home to gems such as its capital Genoa, home to Europe’s largest medieval center.

It’s (almost) always sunny in Liguria , so this region is superb for beach vacations, soaking up the Italian way of life, or dining al fresco on supersized red shrimp.

How to plan a trip to Italy - Tuscany

Journey south along the west coast and you quickly arrive in Tuscany. While, like Liguria, Tuscany is blessed with a wonderful coastline (only with more sand), this region is better known for its hinterland. There you’ll find rolling hills, Chianti vines, and stunning medieval cities such as Florence , Pisa, and Siena.

If you’re interested in Italian culture, Tuscany is second only to Rome in this regard.

Florence is a must for Italophiles, the cradle of the Renaissance, with the famous Uffizi Gallery and even public squares like Piazza della Signora home to world-famous sculptures such as a replica of Michelangelo’s David (head to the Accademia Gallery to see the original).

Travel south and you arrive in Lazio, the region that’s home to Rome , the country’s capital. An astonishing intersection of ancient history, religion, cuisine, and culture, a visit to the Eternal City is a bucket list adventure. Come for the Vatican, stay for the wine bar aperitivi .

Couple inside a restaurant in Naples

Restaurant in Naples

Naples to the south of Rome is one of the best food cities in Italy . The home of pizza, this charismatic southern city throbs with life, its eponymous bay overlooked by looming Mount Vesuvius.

The best views of the volcano are probably found on the southern edge of the Gulf of Naples, from beneath the prolific lemon trees of Sorrento . Perched on cliffs above the Tyrrhenian Sea, this gloriously handsome town has been a popular seaside holiday destination since Roman times.

How to plan a trip to Italy - Amalfi Town

Amalfi Town

Take a winding coastal road a short distance south of the Sorrentine Peninsula and you arrive at the iconic architecture of the Amalfi Coast .

This famous run of punchbowl-bright seaside towns acts as colorful ornamentation for some of Italy’s most spectacular coastal scenery. A place to see and be seen, it’s an epicenter for fashionistas, and the region’s famous for its handmade leather sandals and ceramics.

Scenic waterfront of Palermo, Sicily

Palermo, Sicily

Across the cerulean Tyrrhenian Sea rise the mountainous profiles of Sicily and Sardinia. Both islands are officially part of the Italian state, yet both are truly unique destinations. Each has a multi-layered history, social idiosyncrasies, and Italian cuisine inflected with flavors that speak to their intriguing past.

Cross the Apennine spine of the mainland, and you’ll reach Italy’s eastern Adriatic coastline. Highlights here include the grand café culture of the northern port of Trieste, the sun-bleached quays of southerly Brindisi, and, in between, Italy’s most romantic place : Venice.

Choose Your Route

Gondola ride in Venice

It is possible to see a number of Italy’s top-tier destinations in a short space of time. Many of its major cities and cultural sights are clustered relatively closely together in the adjoining regions of Lazio (Rome), Tuscany (Florence, Pisa), and Campania ( Naples , Amalfi Coast).

Beware of burnout, however. So great is this country’s store of lifelike sculptures, mosaic-filled cathedrals, and legendary pizza places that saturation by the sublime is a real risk.

If you’re planning a multi-destination trip, don’t feel you have to choose two places with similar qualities such as cultural big hitters Rome and Florence on the same visit. You could even save one for the next trip, and travel to a city like Venice instead, where you have time to process what you’ve seen in Florence while sipping prosecco on a relaxing gondola ride.

Couple at a restaurant in Sorrento

Restaurant in Sorrento

Try to marry up a cultural city visit with a period in somewhere more laid-back like Liguria or Sorrento, where you can, at your own pace, absorb the unique charms of the Italian coastal town experience.

Above all else, Italy’s people are its greatest treasure. It’s tempting to rush from place to place ticking off immortal landmarks, but it’s the chic, scooter-gunning mortals surrounding you that make Italy what it is. Ensure you’re making time for the kind of encounters that transform a good trip into a story you never tire of telling.

Plan When to Go

How to plan a trip to Italy - Florence

This southern European country languidly stretches from the Alps towards the center of the Mediterranean. So while the mountains cradling Lake Como and even the country’s central Apennine range often see snow in the winter, Italy mostly enjoys a moderate and mild Mediterranean climate. Of course, this becomes warmer the further south you travel.

In early spring, however, the weather can be overcast. For your surest bet of sunshine filtering through blooming wisteria and onto your al fresco breakfast, travel from May onwards.

From the sun loungers on the Genoese quayside to the coastal archaeological parks of Agrigento in southern Sicily , May offers warmth and the sensory explosion of Italy’s flora. Medieval walls billow with bougainvillea and high street flower boxes glow with marigolds in fragrant blossom.

May also offers the possibilities of fewer crowds in the cities, prior to the start of the high season in June. And while mosquitoes aren’t a major issue, they are more prevalent during summer in Italy .

Couple strolling Amalfi Town

Once summer fully kicks in, Italy is at its most fully realized. The sunlight illuminates Sardinian shallows the green of cats’ eyes, bounces off the majolica-tiled domes of the Amalfi, and shines up the chrome of parked Vespas in Trastevere . In the evening, the warmth lingers into the small hours.

June and July are perfect months for an Italian beach vacation, although the main beaches will be busy. The situation gets even more crowded during August when the entire country goes on vacation. The Italians, escaping the sweltering inland heat, migrate to the limpid breakers of the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic seas.

Even as late into fall, the weather remains reliably pleasant. During this shoulder season, as autumn begins to color the Sangiovese vine leaves of Tuscany, trattoria menus embrace truffle season. It’s an excellent time to journey out into the countryside, as fall is also one of Italy’s festival high seasons.

You’ll find towns hung with pennants, celebrating the locality’s medieval heritage. Traditional games are played in piazzas, the townspeople march in costume blowing long fairytale trumpets, and a good deal of aromatic black truffle is shaved onto melt-in-your-mouth pasta.

Think About Extending Your Stay

The pros of Italy’s mid-Mediterranean positioning aren’t just connected to the blissful climate.

While considering how to plan a trip to Italy, be sure to spread out your map and examine which countries are close by. You’ll see how thinking about how to plan a trip to Italy can easily blossom into considering how to plan a trip for a multi-destination Old World extravaganza.

Bordering Liguria to the west is France. Hop across the border and you quickly arrive in Provence and the French Riviera. A destination of timeless glamor and allure, this coastline is a mix of flower-filled medieval hill towns like Èze and glitzy coastal spots like Cannes and San Tropez.

Beautiful landscape of Calanques National Park

Go west again and you arrive amid the crystalline waters of the Calanques National Park and Marseilles, France’s engaging second city.

Or look south. A short boat ride from Brindisi and you arrive among the whitewashed villages of the Greek archipelago. Isles of myth and magnificent meals on the quayside, an island-hopping odyssey here is not to be missed.

Journey a little further east again, and Turkey’s honey-colored beaches and elegant minarets come into view.

If you’re visiting Venice or Trieste , it’s a quick journey across the Adriatic to neighboring Croatia. There you’ll find sun-kissed islands like Hvar, fortified medieval towns such as Dubrovnik, and an archipelago of serene unspoiled islands.

Make Sure Italy Is For You

Couple in La Sorgente Farm, Sorrento

La Sorgente Farm, Sorrento

When considering how to plan a trip to Italy, consider why you’re going. What do you want out of your experience? It’s such a varied destination that it’s hard not to find some part of this spectacular country that’ll be a good fit.

Whether you like a vacation in the great outdoors, a cultural pilgrimage, or a laid-back beach holiday, the Bel Paese has you covered.

It’s also wonderful for families. If you’re traveling with picky eaters, Italy generally doesn’t offer the dinnertime hurdles offered by countries with less familiar cuisine. Additionally, Italians, as a rule, tend to dote on the younger generation. Traveling with younger children can see you mobbed by twinkly-eyed nonnas (grandmothers).

If you’re concerned about the language, you’ll usually find that most Italians have a good working knowledge of English. Hopefully, you’ll feel brave enough to try a few phrases of your own, and the locals are usually encouraging and appreciative of such efforts.

Time to Pack

Couple strolling Piazza Navona, Rome

Italy’s Mediterranean climate means that you’ll want to have plenty of breathable fabrics in your wardrobe. That’ll ensure your comfort as you’re navigating Rome’s centro storico, especially in the warmth of the summertime.

In the shoulder seasons, pack another layer for the evenings. If you’re traveling in the summer, a sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and bug spray are all helpful inclusions in your suitcase.

Couple strolling Piazza del Plebiscito, Naples

Piazza del Plebiscito, Naples

Comfortable shoes with good grips are important. The timeworn cobbles and flagstones of somewhere like Naples’ Spanish Quarter can be slippery even if there’s only a hint of rain.

When visiting the cosmopolitan cities, there’s scope for the full range of your wardrobe amid the Italian love for fashion and color. Pull out the garments that you always loved but never felt that you had the right occasion to put them on for. This is the occasion. When thinking sartorially about how to plan a trip to Italy, put your best and boldest foot forward.

Cultural Considerations

Couple visiting a church in Amalfi

Navigating Italy’s cultural nuances is a fairly straightforward business. However, if you’re visiting more traditional areas of the countryside, it’s important to be sensitive to the more conservative outlooks that can be found in the smaller communities.

To that end, if you can dress more modestly while exploring small villages then it’s respectful to do so. Think shirts with sleeves and long pants for men, and trousers, below-knee skirts, and covered shoulders for women. These kinds of outfits are appreciated by locals when you step in to see the 1,000-year-old frescos ornamenting their local places of worship.

Vatican City

That dress code is even more emphasized at the illustrious entrance to the Vatican in Rome. Admittance will only be granted if you’re wearing clothes deemed fit for the Catholic holy site, so be sure to check for the requirements ahead of your visit.

Italians strive for a concept called bella figura , which is more than just looking elegant. It’s about a bigger picture of a person who shows self-respect, decency, good manners, and a positive attitude as well as taking care of their appearance.

Prepare Yourself for Not Wanting to Return Home

Beautiful landscape of Vernazza, Cinque Terre

Vernazza, Cinque Terre

Before planning a trip to Italy, it’s probably a worthwhile exercise to jot down a quick list of what responsibilities you’ll be leaving at home and that you absolutely must return to. This is because life in Italy, on the right evening, with Spritz in hand, can seem like the absolute ideal.

The lifestyle in this fascinating country, from toes-in-the-sand dining to diving from the rocks in the Cinque Terre is alluring. It’s not unknown for visitors to be so enchanted by the Italian stile di vita that they simply stay.

Your face and heart will be warmed by the balmy weather and friendly locals, and you’ll quickly join in with social traditions such as the passeggiata . Italy remains a favorite destination for idly dreaming of a full-life transfer to its pasta-rich shores, which is why it’s important to know how to plan a trip to Italy so a swift return is a piece of torta .

Planning Your Trip

How to save money on flights, how to find an affordable hotel, transportation in italy, eating on a budget, free and low-cost activities, more money-saving tips.

Evgeniya Vlasova/Travel + Leisure

For many, visiting Italy is a dream trip — one that’s worth saving up for. There are certainly plenty of glamorous resorts, Michelin-starred restaurants, and exclusive experiences that you might want to splurge on, but a trip to Italy doesn’t have to break the bank. In fact, according to Numbeo , the cost of living is, on average, 19.8 percent lower in Italy than in the U.S.

I’ve been living in Rome for nearly five years and visited Italy many times before that, so I’ve found some strategies for traveling around the country without overspending. Here's how to plan a trip to Italy on a budget.

Want to visit Italy in the summer? So does everyone else — and increased demand drives up the prices on flights, hotels, and even tours. If you want to save some money, plan your trip for the low season (November through March), when you’ll find better rates and fewer crowds. Just keep in mind that while cities like Rome, Florence, Venice, and Milan are year-round destinations, coastal destinations like the Amalfi Coast all but shut down in the winter.

It’s a good idea to start planning your trip to Italy about three to six months in advance, or even longer if you’re planning a trip in the high season and want to be sure you’ll have plenty of options. According to Attilia Avino, who together with her sister Mariella runs Palazzo Avino , a member of the Leading Hotels of the World on the Amalfi Coast, they’re already getting bookings for 2025.

Daniel Gorostieta/Travel + Leisure

There’s no denying that flights are more expensive now than they were in the past — and flights to Italy are no exception. According to Priceline , the average cost of a round-trip flight to Rome in May 2024 is $1,183, while in May 2023 it was $977. That’s an increase of 21 percent in the span of a year.

“The two months with by far the highest number of cheap flights to Italy are January and February,” Scott Keyes, founder and chief flight officer of Going.com , told Travel + Leisure . “Aside from winter travel, shoulder season (March through May and September through November) is known for cheap Italy deals,” he said.

When looking for ways to save money on flights to Italy, it’s important to be flexible. Try using the “anywhere” feature on Google Flights to compare flight costs to different cities in Italy. If, for example, you want to visit Rome but find that the cheapest flight is to Florence, you could save hundreds of dollars by flying to Florence and then taking the train to Rome.

Amanda Blackard/Travel + Leisure

According to Priceline, the average price of a hotel room in Rome rose from $180 in spring 2023 to $301 in May 2024 (that’s a whopping 67 percent increase), but there are still deals to be found. Accommodations in Italy run the gamut from historic grand dames with white glove service to spartan bed-and-breakfasts or hostels with shared dorms. And in many Italian cities, monasteries run guest houses that offer affordable rooms but might have a curfew. Sites like Booking.com will give you plenty of options that will likely fit your budget.

If you want to stay in the countryside, consider booking a room at an agriturismo . The word comes from " agri" for agriculture and " turismo" for tourism, so staying at one is essentially a form of agricultural tourism. Some have working farms that provide fresh fruit and vegetables and produce cheese or charcuterie, which they serve at their restaurant or sell at local markets. Better yet, they’re often more affordable than hotels or resorts.

Airbnb is an obvious choice, but it isn’t always more affordable than staying at a hotel, especially in in-demand neighborhoods in major cities like Rome, Florence, and Venice. It’s a good idea to compare the prices of Airbnbs with budget hotels or hostels when deciding where to stay. And consider that accommodations in neighborhoods outside the historic center will usually cost less than staying near the major monuments.

Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure

Italy has an extensive network of trains and buses that transport people around the country, and most cities have public transit (metros, buses, and/or trams) to move around within them. The key to saving money when traveling between cities is figuring out which train you need to book and booking it at the right time.

High-speed trains like the Frecciarossa travel at speeds up to 300 kilometers per hour. From Rome, you can be in Naples in 70 minutes, Florence in 90 minutes, Milan in three hours, and Venice in four hours. Tickets on the high-speed trains should be booked in advance because the longer you wait to book, the higher the price will rise. There are also intercity trains and regional trains, which cost less but take longer than high-speed trains. If you want to visit small cities such as Parma or Tropea, you might need to transfer from a high-speed train to a slower intercity or regional train. Use Trenitalia.com or Italiarail.com to search for and book the best train routes.

To get around cities like Rome, Milan, and Bologna, the metro is often the cheapest and fastest way to go. In Rome, for example, a single ticket costs €1.50 and is valid on the metro, buses, and trams for 100 minutes. (The price is set to rise to €2 in July.) For €7, you can buy a 24-hour pass that grants you unlimited rides. Tickets can be purchased at ticket booths in some metro stations, at the automatic machines in all metro stations, or at a tabaccaio (look for a sign with the letter T) or at some newsstands. You can use Google Maps to plan your route or download the app Moovit , which has updated information about metro, bus, and tram lines and will warn you about service changes and strikes.

In Venice, the vaporetto is the name for the public water buses that ply the Grand Canal and ferry passengers to the outer islands — and they are significantly cheaper than taking a water taxi. If you just want to cross the Grand Canal, look for the gondola traghetto . These gondolas operate in points where there isn’t a bridge nearby — like between Piazza San Marco and Punta della Dogana — and cost €2 to ride.

Eating out in Italy can put a dent in your wallet, but it doesn’t have to. There are many different types of restaurants in Italy , ranging from casual take-out spots to fine dining restaurants with elaborate tasting menus. According to Numbeo , the average cost of a three-course meal for two people at a mid-range restaurant in Italy is €60, while the average cost of a meal at an inexpensive restaurant is €15.

When I want to sit down for a casual meal of local specialties with affordable prices, I book a table at a trattoria or an osteria . Eating at a pizzeria is also a good option that’s usually more affordable than eating at a restaurant. Sit-down pizzerias are usually only open for dinner, but sometimes I like to get pizza al taglio (by the slice) for a quick lunch. Popping into a friggitoria (a place that specializes in fried food) is also a good option for a quick bite. And most bars have a selection of pastries and sandwiches.

To save a bit of money, join the locals eating and drinking their espresso standing up at the bar counter instead of sitting down and getting table service. In my experience, an espresso taken standing at a bar usually costs around €1.20, while a cappuccino and cornetto might cost €3 or €4.

Visiting museums, archeological sites, and other cultural attractions in Italy is generally quite affordable. Tickets sometimes cost just a few euros or at most about €25. For popular attractions like the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, and Galleria Borghese in Rome, the Uffizi Galleries and Pitti Palace in Florence, and the Doge’s Palace and Galleria dell’Accademia in Venice, it’s best to book tickets in advance. At the Colosseum, for example, tickets might sell out, forcing you to fork over a lot more money to join a guided tour. If you want to save money, book a basic entry ticket in advance and listen to one of Rick Steve’s free audio tours .

State-run museums throughout Italy are free on the first Sunday of every month and on some holidays, like the Festa della Liberazione (Liberation Day) on April 25, but in some cases,  you’ll still need to book tickets online in advance.

There are also lots of things to do in Italy that are totally free all year. Most churches are free to enter — and some of the most incredible Renaissance and Baroque art you’ll see in Italy is inside them. I have found that Italy’s churches can also be a cool, quiet place to rest my feet if I’ve been walking around for hours. Public parks such as Villa Borghese in Rome are also free. And of course, strolling around and simply admiring the beautiful piazzas, fountains, and monuments doesn’t cost a cent.

If you’re visiting Italy in the summer, you’ll probably want to soak up the sun on the beach, but prices at the beach clubs range wildly from about €15 to upwards of €100 for a sunbed and umbrella — not including food and drinks. While prices tend to be higher in touristy areas like Capri, Positano, the Italian Riviera, and the Costa Smeralda, you don’t have to fork over a fortune to enjoy the beach. Instead seek out free public beaches (called spiaggia libera ) — just make sure to bring your own towel.

You might also want to consider visiting secondary cities, such as Parma, Modena, Siena, Perugia, Orvieto, Tropea, and Lecce, where accommodations, experiences, and even meals are often less expensive than in major cities.

The tour itself was amazing! A lot of value for money. The tour guide did seem to be a bit annoyed at us at the end when we wanted to get transport back to the hotel, after walking over half a marathon. This is notable considering a few members had lower body injuries/ health concerns. Other than that, I really loved my trip. I made friends for life, memories I’ll cherish for years

I took my 12 year old son on the Intrepid Family Adventure. We had an amazing time. The guide was helpful, considerate and lots of fun. Playing games with the kids in the pool and making sure everyone was comfortable and happy. The pace was fantastic for a family with the mornings full of exploring with the group and the afternoons reserved for free time for families to spend together. Our highlight was the sailing trip to Capri. Can't recommend highly enough

New Tour of Sicily from Palermo 10 Days Tour

New Tour of Sicily from Palermo 10 Days

Our tour guide, Valentina, was very knowledgeable and accommodating. We absolutely loved her. I was very confused on the first day because I booked with Tourradar and was told our tour would be with Soleto Tours. However, on Sunday morning we were on a list for Jolly Tours. I had never heard of Jolly Tours, yet I was on their tour. Nevertheless, the tour itself was good. My only complaint would be that out of 28 people on the tour, 2 of them spoke only Spanish. So, while at sites, Valentina had to repeat everything twice which slowed up the tour and gave us very little time to ourselves to enjoy the towns. The lunches were great at the local restaurants and our favorite meal of the day. The hotel meals were just average. I didn't know that our tour did not include entrance to the sites. It would have been nice to know this prior to my tour since I was paying for 6 out of 8 of my family members. It added up quickly and I would have prepared before hand had I known. Overall, we all had a great time, learned a lot, saw a lot, ate a lot and made lasting memories. I would recommend this tour to friends.

Small Group Tour of Sicily: Highlights (Maximum 8 Guests)

This tour was the very best experience we have ever had traveling overseas. The booking process was seamless and painless. We felt especially grateful that while the group was limited to 8 participants, it was guaranteed to proceed with 2 people. As it ended up, our trip was just me and my husband and we felt so fortunate to have had the attention of the guides in such a personal way. The guides were all tremendous and I am confident that a larger group would have felt equally tended to. Special thanks to our guides and drivers: Denise, Orazio, Roberto, Carlos, Fabio and Massimo. Part of what was truly evident was how passionate they each were about Sicily and how many of them had connections with people at the restaurants, local businesses and attractions that we went to. We felt like we were in such good hands during the time we were with all of the guides. Each tour and activity was enlightening and educational. The included lunches and other meals were top notch. The opening night walking food and wine tour was a great way to kickoff the trip. There were some others who joined us for that portion, and it was most welcome. I don't think it would have been as much fun for the restaurants and enoteca to have just 2 people and the guide show up, and we knew the rest of the trip we would have individual attention. We felt pampered with our lunches on the Mafia tour, at the winery on Etna, in Marzememi and Agrigento. There was never a feeling of penny-pinching, more plush and like what we would have chosen for ourselves! The selected hotels were excellent! Centrally located, each with a fantastic breakfast spread and fun bar/restaurants. We would happily go back to any of them again and recommend them. We loved the scheduling each day and felt like we had a great mix of free time to explore on our own. Lastly, Graziana was out lifeline while we were traveling. She connected with us daily to check in, and to share the next days plan and name of our guide and where they would meet us. She made dinner reservations for us while we were there and provided recommendations that were helpful. We didn't encounter any issues, but felt that we had a ready ally if needed. Massimo also checked in midtrip, so we truly felt like everyone was interested in us having the best possible trip. I cannot wait to return to Sicily. We have recommended Sicily Activities to many people since our return and would book again in a heartbeat.

When we first arrived and all the list and instructions were in Spanish, I began to worry that I had ruined our family vacation. But to my surprise Claudia came to the rescue. She made sure that she gave the tour in Spanish and English for the small group of us in the group. And towards the end she went out of her way to get the English group their own guide. I believe that saved our whole vacation. So thanks Claudia.

Great value for money. Good tour guide. Excellent travel company. Some days the hiking was a bit light. Would have given it 5 stars if the hiking was every day. Also tourradar/intrepid could also consider providing a higher cost tour where we stay at different refuges every day. This will reduce the transportation constraints and time and increase the Dolomites amazing experience.

On the whole the tour was good though it felt strenuous at times. The guides and driver did a good job coordinating. The most-used hotel was elegant and well located though it did have problems with air conditioning and hot water. The itinerary could have omitted a few stops, in particular a 2 hour visit to a shopping mall. The mix of travelers was fun. We met people from all over the world.

Tour really amizing, the driver and tour guid, food and location was very good, but a first day and last day hotel accomodation is not good very small shower, the bed is like rocking, the last tour scheduled from vasilica to collesium there no travelling car and is not good for us to take a taxi by our own and some a taxi driver is not honest.
Excellent tour, very well organised. Nice and clean accomodations . Very comprehensive tour, all the main sites are covered, but some days are really a bit tiring .Soleto's assistance provided before and during the tour was superb. Good value for money.
