I usually don’t leave reviews like that but I feel like I should if anyone is doubting. Definitely choose them because they’re super informative and easygoing. If you’re on the fence bc you’re worried about not seeing anything don’t worry you will. Book at night I did the 8:30 n it was so bright. It looked like stars. I also took videos and it shows almost as much as real life.

Great experience! Fun, informative and the bio experience was awesome!! Guides helped keep our group organized and provided information on the area and bio.

great place to visit and the staff was super friendly we had a awesome time thank you for the food and drinks and amazing time

WOW WOW WOW!!! That is all I need to say... I think this was one of the coolest phenomenons I've ever experienced. Although you are able to see the bioluminescence as you arrive at Laguna Grande, our guides ensured we got the FULL experience. Once we stopped, they threw a tarp over us which darkened our surroundings and illuminated the water to its max! On top of being one of our best experiences in PR, our tour guides were so nice and attentive. For those who are usually scared of kayaking + deep water (a.k.a. me) don't be! All of the tour guides were evenly spread throughout the bay 24/7 and they made sure we were comfortable at all times. They also provided water and snacks after the tour, which was unexpected but definitely needed. Our tour guides were: Williams Jonathan Jensen Erwin Cristopher 10/10!!!!!! Note: DO NOT expect to swim in the water, as Laguna Grande is a heavily protected area. Any contact with perfumes, body soaps, lotions, etc.. can harm this beautiful ecosystem. Please be mindful of this before booking the tour.

Such a unique experience you do not want to miss out! After kayaking through the channels, we arrived at a large lake and got to learn about the science of bioluminescence and see the glow in the total darkness. Make sure to wear bug spray! The tour guides have an area at check in where you can store any extra items you don’t want to bring with. Be prepared to get soaked from the waist down but it is so worth it! The pictures really don’t due it justice

Absolutely amazing sight to see and a very interesting tour. The guides were very helpful and made an exciting event. Starting at the pre-sunset time was really nice because we got to see the beautiful mangroves on the way into the lagoon. When it got dark the bay was spectacular and the paddle back out through the mangrove canal felt otherworldly. Jesus was our lead tour guide, and he gave great information and along with his team helped even the least experienced kayakers get around safely. Absolutely recommend

We had a wonderful time. the guides were awesome. We were well taken care of. They even washed our feet after the trip and they offered snacks and water. Jesus and his group really were up beat and informative.

I'll start of by saying the staff is excellent and the tour was amazing. Definitely a must do while visiting Puerto Rico. The Bio Bay was such an amazing experience that I feel fortunate to have been able to capture. The thing that was frustrating is both of us have experience kayaking while it was the first time for majority of the others. We chose the 6:30pm trip so we could enjoy the sunset before heading out to the bio bay. The trip into the bio bay was smooth, you move with the current. We got to enjoy the bio bay for about 30 mins with the tour guides going through the history. They were very interesting and funny might I add. On the way back, you are traveling against the current and this is where we started to get irritated because the inexperienced kayakers weren't paying attention to the guides and kept bumping into us and each other. We kept passing others who somehow kept getting themselves stuck in crevices that they had no business getting into because the guides literally tell you to keep in a straight line. All in all, it was a great experience and I would still rate it 5 stars because the tour guides really tried their best to make sure everyone was enjoyed their experience. We were told that only mirrorless cameras were able to capture the bioluminescence. I was able to catch it on video using my iPhone 13 pro max but it doesn't capture the essence in stills.

Trip to Puerto Rico is incomplete if you don't go to see bioluminescent bay. We took 6 P.M kayak trip so that we can also see the sunset and enjoy the bioluminescent bay. The people at yokahu kayak trips are really kind, helpful and informative. There are lot of other kayak companies who takes to the bay but i can bet nobody will be as great as them. At the beginning of the kayak trip they click a picture as a memory and in the end bottle of water and snacks are given.

We heard much about the bio-illuminescent bay from almost every one in the town. We were told that there are glowing algae in the water that are "amazing" to see, and we decided to do this late at night - we took the 9 pm tour. You have to kayak from a bay into a narrow cannal which then leads into a lagoon. Being the guy I am, I had my go pro recording the entire adventure. The only issue was, that it was SO dark our entire group kept running into each other and running into the trees alongside the Canal. The people at the company tried to make this organized but you literally could not see a thing. The bio-illuminescent algea were vidable but nothing extravagant. What would have been better if we could kayak during the day through the canal and actually see what we are kayaking through. This was an option because there was also a 6:15 kayak tour. The only reason we didn't take the earlier tour was because of the glowing algae, but the weren't even all that crazy or exciting to see. Darkness = crappy go pro footage. Take my advice and do the tour, but do the earlier tour so you can see the canal in the evening and hopefully see the algea before the end of the tour.

We booked a 9 PM kayaking trip for a group of eleven and we all loved it!! Tour guides are incredibly friendly and bring the experience to the next level. Tony in particular, was great. The trip itself is two hours. 20 two-person kayaks. There are nine other tours that run in the bay, so there is a lot of passing by other groups. Paddle through the bay and into a long, dark entrance to the bay. The bioluminescence was SO bright from the second we got in the dark. Paddle for half an hour (ish?) through the entry way and into the enormous bay. Guides talk about the eco system, the bacteria that makes the light, etc. paddle back and it's done! You will get wet from the belly button down! We went shoeless and it was much easier that way. Guides offer a locked box for backpacks while you kayak. Overall, awesome experience!!

Amateur operation...horrible communication between customer and operator, and even worse between employees. Was told and guaranteed one price and now they've charged an extra $500 and are refusing to honor the previously agreed upon price!!! There are many other tour operators in the general area, I highly, highly recommend using a different operator than this one!

This was the first activity we did when we got to Puerto Rico and let's just say you would never find this place without GPS. We didn't have GPS and being that it was 8:00pm at night and Puerto Rico feels the need to not put signs on their local streets it took us over an hour and a half to find this place the old school way: using a small map that I luckily remembered to print before leaving. We had to stop twice to ask directions from the locals. This obviously by no means is a reflection on Yohaku, but it gives our experience some background. We finally arrived at 9:00pm (when the kayaking was suppose to start) and were able to spot the Yohaku team in their green t-shirts (this was mention in our confirmation email). We ran up to them hoping that we made it and as soon as we mentioned our name they were able to accommodate us and said not to worry. We were given a brief safety course, instructions on how to kayak and our life jacket. My friend had kayak before and it was my first time, but I wasn't too worried. Two by two we got into our canoe and made our way into the sea. It was super dark, but once your eyes adjust you were able to see shapes of other canoers and also the flashing green light at the front and back of our canoes. We had a guide in the front, middle, and back of our trek into the narrow channel before opening up to the beautiful bay. My friend and I made a good canoeing team, we were able to navigate very well through our journey, but what made the trip uncomfortable was all the people that couldn't get the hang of canoeing and being that I sat in the back I felt it every time someone hit us. And since the channel was narrow and multiple of other kayak companies using it at the same time it can get crowded, but as long as we stayed to the right we were good to go. Once we got out into the channel it was beautiful, it might be dark, but the sky was clear and the stars shined brightly. The bay was beautiful with the organisms lighting up with any disturbance. Canoeing through the channel and around the bay you see the water light up every time your paddle hit the water. Out in the bay if you grab some water in your hand and let it slide down your arm it looked as though you have little neon lights everywhere, magnificent. One of the tour guide gave us some history about the bio and what not, it was a bit hard to hear him, but interesting that the bay we were in was 1 of the 5 bays in the world that has these organisms that light up, super cool. On our trek back I saw something glow super bright pink/purple, it was breath taking, even though I'm not sure what is was, possibly a fish? Once we got back on land there was snacks and water for us. Overall, a fun and relaxing activity.

Great Job by the people at Yokahu!! We made the reservations with no problems (which doesn't seem like much, but we called other companies and it took a week for them to get back to us) We found the lot no problem. The Yohaku people had sent us an email with the directions, and although there were no landmarks, we were able to find the location. As we were on the earlier trip, we were able to get a parking spot no problem. There was a bar/restaurant as well as a couple tents/food truck set up for food. It appeared that the food, etc. would take a bit of time (either bc many people had placed their orders already or bc they were still cooking. So either allow some time to eat or eat before arriving at your tour. I also noticed as we left, a police car watching all the whole area. Finding the tour was super easy. The staff had a table set up and all had matching green shirts. There was a quick how to kayak and we were off. The staff was friendly and helpful. One person in our party was physically not feeling great, so I spoke to the staff and they had her come on a staff members kayak, which I was super grateful for. Each tour company appears to work together and they are all quite organized, each leaving for the bay one at at time, so we were not all going through mangrove trees out to the bio bay at once. It was quite easy to kayak out, one following the next out to the bay. Once in the bio-bay we circled up and the tour guide provided some information about the organisms and responded to questions from the group. We floated around for a bit checking it all out and then paddled back to the base. We went out at 6:30, which I believe was perfect, there was some light when we went out and through the mangrove trees. We started to see the bio-organisms as we entered the bay. By the time we exited, the organisms were quite bright. It was super cool and fun!!! You do get wet, mostly from the water dripping off the paddles. We wore swimsuits and long sleeves. They took a photo of the group and apparently it is free to download on their facebook site. The only negative were was the green flashing lights on the boats. Once it was totally dark, the flashing bright lights were disorientating although on the upside, it was easy to see the other kayak's on the tour. This was a great tour & I would recommend Yokahu!! It was a super great tour and I would highly recommend it.

We used Yohaku Kayaks for a tour of Laguna Grande, the incredible bioluminescent bay near Fajardo, Puerto Rico. First of all, the bay is truly a natural wonder. Micro-organisms indigenous to this bay (and a handful of others around the world), light up on contact. So your boat, every paddle stroke, hand wave in the water, etc., produces an amazing display of light. Now, there are some photos out there that are a bit photoshopped...you won't look like you're in Avatar, but it's still pretty incredible. The trip starts with kayaking across a short stretch of ocean into a rather narrow channel through a mangrove forest. About a quarter way in through the 15-20 minute trip through the mangrove forest, you start to notice the bioluminescence. The kayaking was a lot of fun for us, although it was a little challenging for some other members of our group. No one capsized; however, it is important to note that you will be wet at least from the waist down anyway if not somewhat wet on your upper body as well. Our guides were generally knowledgeable and friendly. They did a good job getting the group through the mango forest and out into the bay. The lead guide gave a nice presentation explaining the ecology of the bay and how the biology of the organisms. The bio bay itself is pretty incredible. Make sure you go when the moon is dark for maximum effect. The later tours are also nice as it's darker. I highly recommend this trip. Yohaku was generally a pretty good experience, however, I felt a bit rushed in the bio bay. The tour was supposed to last two hours, but only lasted an hour and 15 minutes or so. We over-heard the guides discussing their evening plans and they seemed to be in a hurry to get us back. I would have preferred to have a bit more time in such an incredible place. The group size was also a bit large, although the other operators also seemed to be running 30-40 person trips as well. If I did this again, I think I might look into another company that allows more time in the biobay. They also offer other tours, although we didn't try their other offerings out.

We had a great time kayaking at night and seeing the BioBay. We had a reservation for 9pm and because of planning errors on our part, only got our reservation the day before. The other kayak companies were booked solid but Yokahu had room for us. We got there, waited around for a while and eventually got a short lesson from one of the guides for our group. He explained how to kayak, what to expect, going through the mangrove channel, etc. There were about 15 kayaks in our group and 4 guides, which was a nice size. All 4 guides were helpful and hooked up to kayaks that were struggling or needed help. When we got to the bay, we were able to put our hands in the water, and because the moon was bright, the guides had a tarp that we were able to hold up to block the moon light and better see the bioluminescence. The lead guide also gave an explanation of how the bioluminescence works and various details about the bay. We were in the bay for a fairly short time but I don't think that I would've wanted it to be longer. Now, to address the issue that several other reviewers have mentioned- the trip out and back via the mangrove channel. The mangrove channel is narrow and requires kayakers to paddle in the dark, under mangrove trees, single file, as best they can. While it is narrower than open water, it is not narrow enough that it is difficult to navigate your kayak through and is only a few feet deep if you fall out. All kayaks had a blinking green light on the back and a green glow stick on the front so that you can see other kayaks. The night we went it was dark, but not pitch black and you could see low hanging branches and duck out of the way before hitting them. The guides warned us about low hanging branches in specific areas, taught us how to sit back in your kayak, and warned us about upcoming turns while on the trip. Navigating the channel is not that difficult (we had kayaked just once before this) and yes, you will bump into other kayaks from your group and other groups. At times you'll need to slow down or stop for others and then keep paddling. This is how a kayaking tour group works. There are 9 other tour groups and they all go through the same experience in the same channel. Some tour groups include kids, others have people that are not adept kayakers, and there are probably a few drunk idiots mixed in too. Sit back, enjoy your surroundings, and just go with it. The BioBay is one of only 5 in the world, and going through the mangrove channel at night only enhances the adventure of the trip. We had a great time, laughed a lot, and would do the whole thing again. Thanks Yokahu for giving us a unique Puerto Rican Adventure.

Excellent team. Friendly and fun staff. All tours Co. in the area were sold out and they had me in a waiting list. To my benefits they had a cancellation and I was able to go with the family and checked out the Bio Bay lagoon.

This study illustrates the spatio-temporal dynamics of urban growth and land use changes in Samara city, Russia from 1975 to 2015. Landsat satellite imageries of five different time periods from 1975 to 2015 were acquired and quantify the changes with the help of ArcGIS 10.1 Software. By applying classification methods to the satellite images four main types of land use were extracted: water, built-up, forest and grassland. Then, the area coverage for all the land use types at different points in time were measured and coupled with population data. The results demonstrate that, over the entire study period, population was increased from 1146 thousand people to 1244 thousand from 1975 to 1990 but later on first reduce and then increase again, now 1173 thousand population. Builtup area is also change according to population. The present study revealed an increase in built-up by 37.01% from 1975 to 1995, than reduce -88.83% till 2005 and an increase by 39.16% from 2005 to 2015, along w...

Land use/Cover Change in Russia within the context of global challenges. The paper presents the results of a research project on Land Use/Cover Change (LUCC) in Russia in relations with global problems (climate change, environment and biodiversity degradation). The research was carried out at the Faculty of Geography, Moscow State University on the basis of the combination of remote sensing and in-field data of different spatial and temporal resolution. The original methodology of present-day landscape interpretation for land cover change study has been used. In Russia the major driver of land use/land cover change is agriculture. About twenty years ago the reforms of Russian agriculture were started. Agricultural lands in many regions were dramatically impacted by changed management practices, resulted in accelerated erosion and reduced biodiversity. Between the natural factors that shape agriculture in Russia, climate is the most important one. The study of long-term and short-ter...

Annals of The Association of American Geographers

Land use and land cover change is a complex process, driven by both natural and anthropogenic transformations (Fig. 1). In Russia, the major driver of land use / land cover change is agriculture. It has taken centuries of farming to create the existing spatial distribution of agricultural lands. Modernization of Russian agriculture started fifteen years ago. It has brought little change in land cover, except in the regions with marginal agriculture, where many fields were abandoned. However, in some regions, agricultural lands were dramatically impacted by changed management practices, resulting in accelerating erosion and reduced biodiversity. In other regions, federal support and private investments in the agricultural sector, especially those made by major oil and financial companies, has resulted in a certain land recovery. Between the natural factors that shape the agriculture in Russia, climate is the most important one. In the North European and most of the Asian part of the ...

In recent decades, Russia has experienced substantial transformations in agricultural land tenure. Post-Soviet reforms have shaped land distribution patterns but the impacts of these on agricultural use of land remain under-investigated. On a regional scale, there is still a knowledge gap in terms of knowing to what extent the variations in the compositions of agricultural land funds may be explained by changes in the acreage of other land categories. Using a case analysis of 82 of Russia’s territories from 2010 to 2018, the authors attempted to study the structural variations by picturing the compositions of regional land funds and mapping agricultural land distributions based on ranking “land activity”. Correlation analysis of centered log-ratio transformed compositional data revealed that in agriculture-oriented regions, the proportion of cropland was depressed by agriculture-to-urban and agriculture-to-industry land loss. In urbanized territories, the compositions of agricultura...

Despite harsh climate, agriculture on the northern margins of Russia still remains the backbone of food security. Historically, in both regions studied in this article – the Republic of Karelia and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) – agricultural activities as dairy farming and even cropping were well adapted to local conditions including traditional activities such as horse breeding typical for Yakutia. Using three different sources of information – official statistics, expert interviews, and field observations – allowed us to draw a conclusion that there are both similarities and differences in agricultural development and land use of these two studied regions. The differences arise from agro-climate conditions, settlement history, specialization, and spatial pattern of economy. In both regions, farming is concentrated within the areas with most suitable natural conditions. Yet, even there, agricultural land use is shrinking, especially in Karelia. Both regions are prone to being af...
