What is a Transit Visa?

Transit Visa: Everything You Need to Know About the Application Process and Travel Documentation

A transit visa is an official document required for travelers who need to stop in a country before continuing to their ultimate destination. For example, if you’re traveling from India to the United States with a layover in the Schengen Zone, you’ll need a transit visa for that European stopover.

Each country has its own Transit Visa Rules. Click on each country name to find out based on the country.

Key Features of Transit Visas:

  • Purpose : Allows travelers to legally stay in a stopover country while en route to their final destination.
  • Duration : Typically short-term and valid just for the duration of the layover.
  • Necessity : Not required by all travelers, which makes checking prerequisites essential.

General Requirements and Application Process

While the specifics can vary by country, here are some general steps and requirements:

  • Check Requirements : Always verify with the respective embassy or consulate whether a transit visa is needed for your journey.
  • Application : If required, the application process usually involves submitting various documents, possibly including a travel itinerary, passport, and proof of onward travel.

Before traveling, it’s advised to understand the specific requirements for a transit visa, as stated by a consulate official: “It’s important to contact an embassy or consulate before you travel to see if you need a transit visa.”

Understanding and obtaining the correct transit visa is crucial in ensuring a smooth journey, especially for those with complex travel routes involving multiple stops.

Transit Visa Fees by Country

When traveling through different countries, the cost of a transit visa can vary. Here’s a detailed list of transit visa fees for some key destinations around the world:

  • Australia: Free of charge
  • Canada: Free of charge
  • Japan: JPY 700
  • New Zealand: NZD 12
  • Schengen Area: EUR 80 (This fee applies uniformly across all countries in the Schengen zone)
  • Singapore: SGD 40
  • United Kingdom: GBP 35-64 (Varies based on the specific circumstances)
  • United States: USD 160

These fees are essential for travelers to consider when planning their itineraries, as they can impact the overall cost of travel and the required budgeting for international trips. Understanding the specific fees per country helps in pre-travel planning and smoothens the transit processes.

What Is the Transit Zone?

The transit zone refers to a specific area inside an international airport designed for passengers who are waiting to board their connecting flights. This zone is crucial because:

  • It allows passengers to stay within the airport without passing through immigration , as long as they do not leave the airport premises.

Do I Need a Transit Visa If I Leave the Transit Zone?

Whether you need a transit visa depends on your actions within the transit zone:

  • Leaving the Transit Zone : If you exit the transit area, you will require a transit visa to re-enter and continue your journey.
  • Exceptions for Certain Nationals : Passengers from specific countries, such as Iran, Syria, and Guinea, need a transit visa regardless of whether they stay in the transit zone or not.

Difference Between Transit and Transfer Passengers

Understanding the distinction between transit and transfer passengers is vital for managing your journey efficiently:

  • Transit Passengers : Remain on the same aircraft for their connecting flight.
  • Transfer Passengers : Switch to a different aircraft or airline, often requiring a check-in process at the airport.

Important Visa Information for Transfer Passengers

“If you are a transfer passenger, it is essential to check with your airline about the need for a transit visa during your flight.” This step is crucial to ensure that you meet all travel requirements and avoid disruptions in your journey.

Types of Flights: Direct, Connecting, and Non-Stop

Understanding the main differences between direct, connecting, and non-stop flights will help you choose the best option for your needs:

  • Direct Flights :
  • Route goes from Point A to Point B without changing flight numbers.
  • May include stops to pick up additional passengers.
  • “Direct flights may stop along the way but keep the same flight number.”
  • Connecting Flights :
  • Travels from Point A to Point B with a stop at Point C.
  • Passengers must change planes.
  • “Remember, for connecting flights, you might need a transit visa.”
  • Non-Stop Flights :
  • Flies from Point A to Point B without any stops.
  • Offers the quickest travel time.
  • “Non-stop flights offer the most direct and quickest route without any interruptions.”

Transit Visa: Required Documents

If your travel plans include a layover requiring a transit visa, you’ll need the following documents:

  • Airport transit visa application form.
  • Passport valid for at least six months with blank pages.
  • Passport-sized photographs.
  • Proof of travel health insurance.
  • Ticket to your onward destination.
  • Visa for your final destination (if required).
  • Proof of financial means to support your trip.

How to Apply for a Transit Visa?

  • Gather the necessary documents ; these will vary depending on your transit country. Check our list above to find out each country wise.
  • Official verification: Ensure your documents are translated and authenticated with an apostille stamp or certified by an official office.

  • Locate a representative office, such as an embassy, consulate, or visa application center, of the transit country.
  • Schedule an appointment to proceed with your visa application interview process.

Submit Your Application

Application Submission and Interview:

  • Submit your application at the designated visa application center.
  • Complete the visa interview process.
  • Important reminder: “You must apply for a transit visa before you leave for your flight – transit visas cannot be received at the airport.”

Understand Transit Visa Validity

Visa Duration and Legal Compliance:

  • Often valid for 24 hours, although the duration may extend to a few days based on specific embassy regulations.
  • “Check your visa validity period and complete your transition within that timeframe, otherwise, you may risk incurring legal consequences.”

Single-Use Nature of Transit Visas

Usage Limitations:

  • A transit visa is typically a single-entry visa.
  • After it’s used for transition, it becomes invalid.
  • “If you need to transit again, you must reapply for a new transit visa.”

Additional Considerations for Longer Stays

If extended time in the transit country is planned:

  • “You need to apply for a tourist visa.”

Transit Visa Cost

Cost Consideration:

  • The cost can range from $25 to $100, varying by country.
  • Some countries do not require a fee for transit visa applications.

Exemptions from Transit Visa Requirements

You may not need a transit visa if:

  • You already possess a valid visa for your transit country.
  • You hold a valid diplomatic passport.
  • There is a bilateral agreement between your home country and the transit country.
  • You do not plan to leave the transit zone (specific to nationals of certain countries).
  • Your transit period is under 24 hours (this condition varies by country).

Visit/transit.

This webpage sets out the entry arrangement for persons who require a visa/entry permit to visit/transit the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). If a person wishes to visit or transit the HKSAR but does not enjoy the visa waiver concession; or if he/she wishes to stay beyond the entitled visa free period, he/she must obtain a visa/entry permit before coming. Information on the visa waiver concession and visa requirements of the HKSAR for respective countries can be found in the "Visit Visa / Entry Permit Requirements for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region" webpage.

This entry arrangement does not apply to Chinese residents of the Mainland and Taiwan (other than People's Republic of China passport holders and Chinese residents of Taiwan living overseas).

An application for a visa/entry permit to enter the HKSAR for a visit or transit may be favourably considered if:

  • the applicant's bona fides are not in doubt;
  • the applicant has adequate funds to cover the duration of his/her stay without working; and
  • where the application is for a transit visa/entry permit, he/she holds an onward ticket to the place of his/her destination unless the destination is the Mainland of China or Macao.

In general, unless a person has the right of abode or right to land in the HKSAR, he/she requires a visa/entry permit to stay in the HKSAR as a visitor longer than the allowed visa free period. While each application is determined on its individual merits, an applicant should meet normal immigration requirements (such as holding a valid travel document with adequate returnability to his/her country of residence or citizenship; be of clear criminal record and raise no security or criminal concerns to the HKSAR; have no likelihood of becoming a burden on the HKSAR, etc.) as well as the relevant specific eligibility criteria detailed above before he/she may be considered for the grant of a visa/entry permit. It should be noted that the eligibility criteria may be subject to change from time to time.

It normally takes four weeks to process a visit/transit visa/entry permit application upon receipt of all the required documents. The Immigration Department will not be able to start processing the application unless all the required documents and information have been received. Please refrain from making enquiries about the progress of the application unless it is absolutely necessary, as it may delay the processing of the application.

All applications are processed and determined by the Immigration Department. Approval of applications is entirely discretionary and is subject to changes in government policies. The Director of Immigration reserves absolute discretion to refuse any application even if the application meets all eligibility criteria.

Applicant should complete application form ( ID 1003A ) The sponsor should complete application form ( ID 1003B ). The application forms ( ID 1003A and ID 1003B ) can be obtained free of charge from the following offices:

  • Immigration Department Headquarters;
  • Immigration Branch Offices;
  • Overseas Chinese Diplomatic and Consular Missions; and
  • HKSAR Government offices outside Hong Kong.

The forms can also be downloaded here .

The nomination of a local sponsor will assist the Immigration Department in processing the application. A local sponsor can either be a company or an individual. If the local sponsor is an individual, he/she should be:

  • of the age of 18 or above;
  • a bona fide Hong Kong resident; and
  • acquainted with the applicant.

It is an offence to make false statements or representations to an immigration officer. A person who knowingly and wilfully makes a statement or gives information which he/she knows to be false or does not believe to be true shall be guilty of an offence under the Laws of Hong Kong and any such visa/entry permit issued or permission to enter or remain in the HKSAR granted shall have no effect.

Online Submission

Applicants may contact the nearest Chinese diplomatic and consular mission for details.

If the application is submitted to the Immigration Department directly, upon approval of the applications, the notification of the application result issued by the Immigration Department will include a webpage link for payment. Payment of relevant fees could be made through the said webpage link or the GovHK website or the ImmD Mobile Application by credit cards, Payment by Phone Service (PPS) or Faster Payment System (FPS). Once the receipt of application has been acknowledged, applicants can enquire their application status here  or through the 24-hour telephone enquiry system at (852) 3160 8663.

Upon acknowledgement of the receipt of the relevant fee, the applicant will receive a notification, and he/she must download or print the “e-Visa” afterwards through the GovHK website or the ImmD Mobile Application.

A visa/entry permit (in the form of “e-Visa” ) will be issued upon successful application. Upon immigration arrival clearance in the HKSAR, an “e-Visa” holder should present his/her valid travel document and the “e-Visa” saved on a personal mobile device or printed on a sheet of A4 white paper, and scan the encrypted QR code on the “e-Visa” with the optical reader at an immigration counter.

For applications submitted to Chinese diplomatic and consular missions or the Immigration Division of the Office of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in Beijing (Beijing Office) or the Immigration Division of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Shanghai (SHETO), visas/entry permits will be issued through the relevant Chinese diplomatic and consular missions or the Immigration Division of the Beijing Office or the Immigration Division of the SHETO as appropriate. The visa/entry permit label should be affixed onto a blank visa page of the applicant's travel document for presentation to an immigration officer upon arrival in the HKSAR.

If there is a special/urgent need to stay longer, visitors may apply online for extension of stay when their remaining limit of stay is within 14 days (not applicable to persons whose limit of stay will expire within 3 days), or make an extension of stay application by other means within 7 days before their limit of stay expires. Depending on actual circumstances, applications in person will normally be finalized on the same day.

Applicants must submit a completed and signed form ID 91 . If the applicant is under the age of 16, the form should be signed by the applicant’s parent or legal guardian. The form can be obtained free of charge from the Immigration Department Headquarters and the Immigration Branch Offices. The form can also be downloaded here .

Notwithstanding that the documents and information required have been furnished, applicants may still be required to submit further supporting documents and information in connection with the application(s) when necessary.

Where a document is not in Chinese or English, it must be accompanied by a Chinese or English translation certified as a true translation by a sworn translator, court translator, authorised public translator, certified translator, expert translator or official translator.

Transit Visas: Essential Info for Travelers Passing Through the U.S.

visit and transit visa

Are you planning an international journey that includes a layover in the United States? Navigating the world of transit visas can be a crucial aspect of your travel planning. This blog post is designed to provide you with essential information on transit visas, particularly for those passing through the U.S.

Understanding Transit Visas

A transit visa is specifically for travelers who are entering a country only to leave it again to reach their final destination. In the U.S., this is typically known as the C-1 visa. It’s essential for those who have a connecting flight in the U.S. and need to pass through American borders.

When Do You Need a Transit Visa?

Whether you need a transit visa to pass through the U.S. depends on various factors:

  • Nationality: Some nationalities require a transit visa regardless of the layover duration.
  • Layover Duration: If your layover is long or involves changing airports, a transit visa is often necessary.
  • Final Destination Visa: If you need a visa for your final destination, you might also need a transit visa for the U.S.

Common Types of Transit Visas

The U.S. primarily offers the C-1 transit visa for travelers passing through the country. However, if your layover is in another region, like the Schengen Area or the UK, you might encounter different types of transit visas, such as the Schengen Airport Transit Visa or the UK’s DATV.

Exploring Various Transit Visa Categories:

C-1 Visa for the U.S.: Detail the C-1 visa specifically for travelers transiting through the United States.

Airport Transit Visas in the Schengen Area: Describe the Schengen Airport Transit Visa, required for certain nationalities when passing through the international transit zones of Schengen airports.

Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV): Explain the DATV, particularly for the UK, used by travelers who won’t pass through border control but need to change planes.

Application Process for Transit Visas

Step-by-Step Guide to Applying for a Transit Visa:

  • Application Steps: Outline the general steps involved in applying for a transit visa, including where and how to apply.
  • Documentation: List the typical documents required, such as a valid passport, proof of onward travel, and sometimes proof of visa for the final destination country.
  • Processing Time: Give an idea of how long the processing might take and advise on applying well in advance of the travel date.

Eligibility and Requirements

General criteria for a U.S. transit visa include:

  • Valid Onward Ticket: Proof of your travel plans to your final destination.
  • Short Layover Duration: Your stay in the U.S. should align with your connecting flight timing.
  • No Violation of Visa Terms: Ensure that you won’t overstay or engage in unauthorized activities.

Some travelers may be eligible for TWOV, allowing them to transit without a visa under specific conditions. These programs depend on nationality, destination, and the airlines involved.

Visa Waiver Program and Transit Visas

Citizens of countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) may not need a transit visa for short layovers in the U.S. However, they would need to obtain authorization through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).

Tips for Smooth Transit Visa Processing

To ensure a hassle-free visa application process:

  • Early Application: Emphasize the importance of applying for a transit visa well in advance of the travel date.
  • Documentation: List the common documents required for a transit visa application and tips on how to organize them efficiently.
  • Understanding Specific Requirements: Highlight the necessity of understanding the transit visa requirements of the specific country you are transiting through.

Dealing with Transit Visa Complications

If you encounter issues or delays:

  • Common Complications: Identify typical problems that might arise during the transit visa application process, such as delays or requests for additional documentation.
  • Seeking Assistance: Advise on when and how to seek help, whether it’s from an embassy, consulate, or a professional visa consultant.
  • Alternative Solutions: Suggest potential alternatives if a transit visa application faces significant issues, such as changing travel routes to avoid transit visa requirements.

While transit visas may seem like just another step in your travel planning , understanding their requirements and processes is vital for a seamless journey, especially when passing through the U.S. By staying informed and prepared, you can ensure that your transit through the U.S. or any other country is as smooth as your overall travel experience. Safe travels!

Only the UAE based-airlines you are travelling through can arrange your transit visa prior to your journey. Airline agents can apply online for transit visas through one of the following means:

  • the UAEICP app for  Apple  and  Android
  • online channels offered by the relevant General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in each emirate.

Transit visa is issued either for 48 hours or for 96 hours. Please note that once a 48 hours visa is issued, it cannot be extended to 96 hours.

Transit visas for 48 hours

To get a transit visa, you must have:

  • a photo of self against a white background
  • an onward ticket booking to a 3rd destination, other than the one you are coming from.

Transit visas for 96 hours

Transit visas for 96 hours are issued against a fee of AED 50 to passengers transiting through the UAE’s airports. You need to apply for the visa in advance through a UAE-based airline. This visa is not extendable, nor renewable. The validity of the visa is 96 hours from entry into the UAE, and you must leave the UAE within 96 hours from arrival.

  • a passport or travel document with a minimum validity of six months

No fees or additional amounts can be imposed by any federal, local or private entity. A departure fee of AED 30 is levied on each passenger passing through the UAE’s airports.

What is a U.S. Visa?

A citizen of a foreign country who seeks to enter the United States generally must first obtain a U.S. visa, which is placed in the traveler’s passport, a travel document issued by the traveler’s country of citizenship.

USCIS Strengthens T Nonimmigrant Visa Program and Protections for Trafficking Victims

WASHINGTON —The Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services today announced a  final rule  to strengthen the integrity of the  T nonimmigrant status (T visa) and ensure eligible victims of human trafficking can access protections and stabilizing benefits on a timely manner. T nonimmigrant status enables certain victims of human trafficking to remain in the United States for an initial period of up to four years.

“We are dedicated to protecting victims of human trafficking and minimizing any potential barriers to assistance,”  said USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou.  “This final rule has been many years in the making, and I am thrilled the T visa program now has a firm regulatory framework to support it. Ultimately, this makes our approach more victim-centered and strengthens the integrity of the T visa application process so the program better protects victims, as Congress intended.”

Human trafficking, also known as trafficking in persons, is a crime in which traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to compel individuals to provide labor or services, including commercial sex. Traffickers often take advantage of vulnerable individuals, including those lacking lawful immigration status. In some cases, people who are smuggled into the United States may become victims of human trafficking or exploitation during their journeys or upon reaching their destination. DHS is committed to protecting communities from an increased threat of human trafficking through strong border enforcement and enhanced consequences for those who do not avail themselves to the many expanded lawful pathways.

T nonimmigrant status offers protection to victims and strengthens the ability of law enforcement agencies to detect, investigate, and prosecute human trafficking. This final rule clarifies T nonimmigrant status eligibility and application requirements and includes provisions to reduce potential barriers to victims and enable USCIS officers to adjudicate victims’ applications more efficiently. The final rule also improves the program’s integrity by clarifying the reporting and evidentiary requirements for victims of trafficking, which will better help law enforcement act on reports of trafficking.

Key elements of the final rule include:

  • Updating and clarifying definitions – including serious harm, abuse, and law enforcement agency – to ensure consistency and standards as described in the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000, as amended;
  • Improving program efficiency by clarifying reporting and evidentiary requirements on the outset to decrease requests for additional evidence;
  • Streamlining law enforcement agencies’ ability to act on reports of trafficking by requiring victims to report instances of trafficking to the correct law enforcement of jurisdiction; and
  • Simplifying the bona fide determination and adjudication process, while continuing to uphold fraud prevention measures.

In 2016, DHS published an interim rule to respond to public feedback on the T visa program, clarify requirements based on statutory changes, formalize the experience gained from operating the program for more than 14 years, and amend provisions as required by intervening legislation. In July 2021, DHS  reopened the public comment period for this interim rule for 30 days and subsequently extended the deadline for comments. This final rule adopts the changes in effect from the 2016 interim rule, clarifies the existing regulatory framework, and substantively addresses the public comments received.

DHS is on the frontlines of combating human trafficking, protecting the country and collaborating with our partners to stop these crimes. Launched in 2020, the  DHS Center for Countering Human Trafficking coordinates the efforts of 16 DHS offices and components to combat human trafficking through law enforcement operations, victim protection and support, intelligence and analysis, and public education and training programs. Through the Blue Campaign, the DHS Center for Countering Human Trafficking leads the Department’s national public awareness effort to combat human trafficking. DHS’s ongoing efforts to address online child sexual exploitation and abuse comes after the Department’s Quadrennial Homeland Security Review added combating crimes of exploitation and protecting victims as a sixth mission area in April 2023. Learn more about  recent DHS efforts to combat child exploitation and abuse .
