A Hiker's Guide to Sri Lanka's Knuckles Mountain Range

Sina Abasnejad /

Named after its uncanny likeness to human knuckles, the Knuckles Mountain Range is a gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular spot for hikers.

The dense forest, surrounded by 34 mystical mountains that range from 900 to 2,000 metres, is home to stunning hiking trails. With cascading waterfalls in every clearing, quaint villages hidden amid the mountains, many a terraced rice fields as well as numerous rare and elusive animals, this 234-square-kilometre range displays the best of Sri Lanka’s diverse natural beauty.

How to hike the Knuckles Mountain Range

The Knuckles Mountain Range is considered one of the toughest hiking trails in the country and is best attempted by those with prior experience in hiking. That being said, no matter how experienced you are, it’s mandatory to have a guide. Besides the area’s vastness and the possibility of getting lost, hikers are only allowed to enter the protected reserve with a qualified guide. Failure to do so will land you in trouble with the authorities.

While this hiker’s paradise features as many as 34 trails, finding information on most of them can be difficult. It’s always best to ask your hotel or guide for suggestions. Be sure to let them know what you expect to see; some trails meander through rural villages while others go past waterfalls and lush vegetation.

Sina Abasnejad /

Dothalugala nature trail

A popular trek is the Dothalugala nature trail, which winds its way up the Dothalugala Mountain and offers the most breathtaking of views from the south of the range. When descending, climb down from the other side so to complete a full circle of the mountain. The entire trail is 5.8 kilometres and starts at the Knuckles Conservation Centre in Deanston. A permit, which can be obtained at the centre, is needed to enter the area.

Nitro Caves

Another popular choice for hikers is the nature trail that leads to Nitro Caves , a massive cave inhabited by hundreds of bats. The 11-kilometre path starts at Corbett’s Gap and will take about five hours to complete. The caves do make for a great, albeit slightly unnerving, sight. Corbett’s Gap is itself a noteworthy attraction. Sitting at an elevation of 1,216 metres, it offers spectacular panoramic views of the mountain range, which makes for perfect Instagram shots.

Mini World’s End

Located towards the south of the mountains is Mini World’s End, a dramatic 1,192-metre cliff that offers sweeping views of the mountains. The trail to Mini World’s End is one of the two trails in the mountain range. It begins at the Knuckles Conservation Centre (KCC) and is approximately 1.5 kilometres in length. Again, a permit is required. On a cloud-free day, you can make out several villages and settlements dotted below in the valleys. There aren’t any barriers at Mini World’s End, so mind your footing at all times.

Duwili Ella trail

While all the trails are impressive, the crown goes to the Duwili Ella trail, a 40-metre waterfall hidden deep within the forest. What makes Duwili Ella special is the cave inside the waterfall, allowing hikers to get behind the waterfall, akin to the entrance of the Bat Cave.

Most opt for one-day excursions into the woods, but an overnight hike is recommended for the full experience. Huddling next to a crackling campfire away from digital distractions, with a luminous star-studded sky above and your closest friends around, is an experience not to be missed.

Pro tips: Streams are aplenty but there is a chance some of them might have dried up, especially during the dry season. Bring enough water bottles and refill them at every passing stream. The water here is completely safe to drink.

Since the range is teeming with leeches, be sure to bring anti-leech spray, anti-leech socks and other forms of protection with you to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Sina Abasnejad /

Other recreational activities in the area and attractions to visit

Although hiking is the biggest lure in Knuckles, the conservation site has plenty of other noteworthy attractions to visit.

Meemure is a lazy rural village deep inside the forests. With beautiful streams and waterfalls, it offers mesmerising views and photograph-worthy vistas. It is a little-known attraction, even among locals, so it’s easy to have an experience minus the selfie sticks and loud tourists. Mingle with the villagers, who are more than happy to converse, and discover Sri Lanka’s much-famed hospitality.

Sina Abasnejad /

Kandy , the cultural capital of the tiny nation, is an hour’s drive from Knuckles. It is the perfect place to discover Sri Lanka’s kaleidoscopic culture. Visit the Temple of The Tooth or sip on the finest tea in the various luxury hotels perched upon the hills.

Make a trip down to the Aluvihara Rock Cave Temple in Matale and gain a first-hand experience of Sri Lanka’s famed rock temples. Built in the third century, the temple consists of multiple caves, which have religious frescoes on the walls and ceilings. Numerous statues of Lord Buddha can be seen throughout the site, including a massive reclining statue that makes for an impressive sight.

Places to eat

Since the Knuckles Mountain Range is a protected reserve, the construction of hotels and restaurants is not allowed. This means there aren’t many options in terms of food within the range other than the occasional convenience store in the villages.

Stock up on food and essentials in nearby towns, such as Kandy and Matale, before the hike.

How to get to the Knuckles Mountain Range

Getting into Knuckles is mainly dependent on where your lodging is. The most popular entrance to the reserve is via Matale. There isn’t any public transportation into Knuckles from this point onwards.

The other entrance is via Hunnasgiriya, which is closer to Kandy. Many buses travel to Hunnasgiriya but from there onwards, private transportation is required.

The roads are paved and are suitable for cars and other private vehicles. However, the winding roads can be quite narrow in some spots with steep drops, so it pays to be careful while driving here.

Exploring the Majestic Knuckles 5 Peaks: A Journey to Nature’s Paradise

Nestled amidst the verdant hills of Sri Lanka, the Knuckles Mountain Range, also known as the Knuckles 5 Peaks, is a natural wonder that beckons adventurers and nature enthusiasts worldwide. Its breathtaking landscapes, diverse flora and fauna, and challenging trails make it a paradise for trekking and hiking enthusiasts. In this travel article , we journey to discover the mesmerizing beauty and serenity of the Knuckles 5 Peaks, unraveling the secrets hidden within this enchanting destination.

The Allure of the Knuckles Mountain Range

The Knuckles Mountain Range is a UNESCO World Heritage Site , renowned for its rich biodiversity and unique geological formations. Located in central Sri Lanka, the range derives its name from its resemblance to a clenched fist. Comprising five majestic peaks—Kirigalpoththa, Gombaniya, Knuckles, Dotulugala, and Koboneelagala it offers an awe-inspiring experience for nature lovers.

Trekking in Paradise: Kirigalpoththa Peak

Our journey begins with the highest peak in the Knuckles range, Kirigalpoththa. As we ascend through mist-laden trails, the surrounding lush greenery and panoramic views leave us breathless. The course takes us past gurgling streams, cascading waterfalls, and vibrant wildflowers. Reaching the summit rewards us with a magnificent vista, where the sunrise and sunset cast a golden hue over the landscape, creating a truly ethereal experience.

Gombaniya: A Natural Playground

The second peak, Gombaniya, is a treasure trove of natural wonders. It offers a thrilling challenge for climbers with its rugged terrain and steep inclines. As we conquer the summit, the expansive views of the surrounding valleys, emerald tea plantations, and terraced rice fields unfold before us like a painting. Exploring the verdant forests, we encounter a diverse range of flora and fauna, including endemic species that are found only in this region.

Knuckles: The Heart of the Range

At the heart of the Knuckles range lies the aptly named Knuckles Peak, a majestic pinnacle that stands as a testament to nature’s grandeur. The trail to Knuckles Peak is known for its diverse landscapes, from dense forests to open grasslands. Along the way, we encounter enchanting waterfalls, crystal-clear streams, and colorful birdlife, providing a sensory feast for the avid adventurer. Reaching the summit rewards us with sweeping vistas of misty valleys, layered mountains, and picturesque villages.

Dotulugala and Koboneelagala: Hidden Gems

The lesser-explored peaks of Dotulugala and Koboneelagala offer a tranquil escape from the bustling world. The trails leading to these peaks wind through pristine forests, allowing us to immerse ourselves in nature’s serenity. Dotulugala Peak reveals a breathtaking view of the Knuckles range, while Koboneelagala treats us to a magnificent panorama of the surrounding countryside, adorned with terraced paddy fields and traditional village life.

Experience an action-packed day trip to the UNESCO-listed Knuckles Range in Sri Lanka – perfect for hikers and non-hikers alike!

Named after the ridges along the mountain range that resemble knuckles of a closed fist, the Knuckles Mountain Range in Central Sri Lanka is a UNESCO Heritage Site that features stunning viewpoints, a cloud forest, waterfalls and hiking trails; the entire region is considered a super biodiversity hotspot.

Knuckles Mountain Range Kandy Sri Lanka

According to UNESCO, “ the forests are globally important and provide habitat for an exceptional number of endemic species of flora and fauna ” including the shy and rare purple-faced langur monkey, leaf-nosed horn lizard from Knuckles, Asian elephants and even the Sri Lankan leopard. It also features almost all major climate zones including a dense “ cloud forest ” that helps to purify moisture in the air to form nutrient-rich streams and rivers that flow back towards the ocean.

1 day itinerary for Knuckles Mountain Range

Mountains in Central Highlands of Sri Lanka near Kandy

This 1-day Knuckles itinerary is perfect for avid hikers and non-hikers alike – even though I am not a big fan of trekking (I’d much rather embark on a wildlife safari or cool down by the beach with a cheeky cocktail), the outrageous views and easy trails made this a highlight of my latest trip back to Sri Lanka. To book this customizable tour get in touch with Aravinda Rathnayake via e-mail at [email protected] – he is an experienced naturalist and grew up in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka.

Rice terraces in Knuckles Mountain Range in Sri lanka

The best time to visit Knuckles in Sri Lanka is during the dry season from November to April – the other months experience more rain and trails can get muddy, and viewpoints may become very foggy. We got an early start at 7 AM and finished the itinerary in the late afternoon, though you can easily modify this itinerary by letting Aravinda know what you’re looking for; the best part about working with a local expert like Aravinda is that you aren’t signing up for a set itinerary that hundreds of other people have already been on.

Wondering what to do in Knuckles? Here is how we spent our perfect day in the Knuckles Mountain Range!

1. But first…breakfast

Mountains in Central Highlands of Sri Lanka near Kandy

Before any physical activity it’s important to fill your belly! On our way to Riverston we stopped at a roadside family-run stall serving up freshly made hoppers and lentil vadai, and don’t forget the steaming hot tea.

These types of traditional stalls run on a trust-based system: you walk in, eat what you want from the table and tell them what you had at the end.

Remember this spot because you’ll want to stop for some post-hike treats to refuel at the end of the day!

2. Hike to the Mini World’s End (Pitawala Pathana) near Riverston

Pitawala Pathana in Knuckles Sri Lanka

After breakfast, start your morning with this Knuckles hike: this hike is short and sweet and is one of several “Mini” World’s End spots around the island. The hike is no more than 2 KM-or-so and shouldn’t take more than 20 minutes each way, just watch your step because there is a lot of buffalo dung lying around!

Mini Worlds End Hike in Knuckles Mountain Range in Sri Lanka

The best part about this hike is the unobstructed views and jaw-dropping cliffs over Riverston – you’ll want to check out the various viewpoints for some seriously stunning photos! It goes without saying that you absolutely must be careful when approaching the edge of the viewpoints – there are a few where the drop is no joke. If you are uncomfortable or afraid of heights your safest bet is to stick to some of the earlier viewpoints along the trail that are a bit wider and further in from the edge.

Entry costs 650 LKR per person (approximately US$2-3 or 2 Euros).

Ready for your epic Knuckles day trip? I recommend staying at Madulkelle Tea and Eco Lodge for a luxury glamping experience high up in the hills with killer views, Rukgala Retreat for a peaceful yoga retreat experience, or The Grand Mountain Hotel in Matale for easy access to Knuckles.

3. Visit a local village for lunch

Local village visit in Knuckles Mountain Range in Sri Lanka

Most first-time visitors to Sri Lanka travel around the island for 1-2 weeks. The issue is, the vast majority of people visit the exact same spots and tourism spending is heavily concentrated on a handful of areas. One goal of the Sri Lankan tourism authorities is to spread that tourism load around more evenly, and to ensure that more communities are able to benefit not only financially, but also experience more cultural exchange with visitors. This is why the community-based tourism visit to a local village in Knuckles was unforgettable.

Farmer in the rice paddies in Knuckles Sri Lanka

After trekking to Mini World’s End, we hiked another 30 minutes along a mostly-flat trail to a serene village nestled among lush rice paddies and terraces. In this village there are 32 families and homes who take turns hosting visitors and cooking delicious meals.

Lunch in Knuckles Mountain Range in Sri Lanka

Here, our host walked to his king coconut tree and plucked coconuts for us to drink, before serving up the most scrumptious and lovingly-prepared vegetarian meal. Pumpkin curry, anyone?

Homecooked meal in a local village in Knuckles Sri Lanka

We each plopped ourselves down in a chair and wolfed down our lunch while watching flocks of birds fly over the emerald-green rice paddies. Bliss!

Palm trees and rice paddies in Knuckles Mountain Range Sri Lanka

I can’t recommend this experience highly enough, so make sure you get in touch with Aravinda early enough to make sure you are able to visit this village. Sri Lankan people are famous for their hospitality, and this type of homecooked meal and community-based tourism will make your trip to Sri Lanka one to remember for all time.

4. Sera Ella Waterfall

Sera Ella waterfall in Knuckles Sri Lanka

Finally, cool off from your Knuckles day trip by swimming in the pool at the base of the Sera Ella waterfall! The twin falls are located at the base of a few flights of rock steps and is best visited from November to about March during a weekday, as it can get busy over the weekends and school holidays.

Make sure you bring your swimsuit and towel so that you can hop in the water for a swim, and step behind the veil of the waterfall into the cave behind the plunging stream.

What to bring and what to wear to Knuckles

Local village visit in Knuckles Mountain Range in Sri Lanka

Weather in the Knuckles Mountain Range is unpredictable, so bring a light sweater or scarf . Though the hikes are not strenuous, make sure you wear proper walking shoes with long socks and pants – these will come in handy when you inevitably run into a pesky leech or two. You may also want to bring a bottle of salt water to get rid of them if they latch onto you.

Though some areas are shaded, you will still need sunscreen and/or a hat . Bring your swimsuit and towel if you plan on visiting the waterfall, a bag for any rubbish (leave no trace!) and a bottle of drinking water for the day.

Rice paddies in Knuckles forest reserve in Sri Lanka

Wondering where to stay if you are visiting the Knuckles Mountain Range? Head to Madulkelle Tea and Eco Lodge for the ultimate glamping experience and a panoramic view of the “closed fist”. The property also features a infinity pool, on-site spa and incredible restaurant. Click here to check rates and availability at Madulkelle Tea & Eco Lodge! I also love Rukgala Retreat just outside of Kandy city where you can join twice-daily Yoga classes and eat the most delicious vegetarian fare. Click here to check availability and current rates at Rukgala Retreat in central Sri Lanka or check out even more options in and around Kandy.

Magnificent Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka travel guide

Top Scenic Places in the Knuckles Mountain Range

Bearing a unique resemblance to the knuckles of a clenched fist, Knuckles Mountain Range consists of five prominent peaks and 34 other smaller peaks. Filled with breathtaking hiking trails with unspoiled beauty, this is the best hiking and trekking area in Sri Lanka. The Knuckles Mountain terrain suits both beginner and experienced trekkers, where it offers popular hiking trails as well as off-the-beaten trekking routes. Hence Knuckles is widely known as the hiker’s heaven in Sri Lanka.

Knuckles Mountain Range

The Knuckles Mountain Range is a biodiversity hotspot, declared as one of the eight UNESCO world heritage sites in the country. The lush green forests in Knuckles provide a habitat for an exceptional number of endemic species of flora and fauna. Without a doubt, this is an ideal place for bird watching in Sri Laka with a number of rare endemic bird species . It also features dense cloud forests, as well as streams and rivers that flow through the fertile mountain valleys. Certainly, this mountain range is the most important water catchment area in the country.

Sri Lanka White Eye

Knuckles range is a popular place for camping among both local and foreign visitors. As well, it is the best place for waterfall hunting in Sri Lanka. It is home to more than 60 waterfalls spread in the entire range. It is possible to see 7-10 major waterfalls within one day of hiking through the mountains. Some of the hidden waterfalls in Knuckles are so spectacular and completely worthy of visiting.

Access to Knuckles Mountain Range

The Knuckles can be approached from Kandy or Matale cities. From each city, you need to travel around 40 km to the Knuckles range. If you are traveling from Kandy, first you need to reach Hunnasgiriya, then Loolwatta, and next to Corbett’s Gap and Meemure. It is better to arrange private transportation by hiring a taxi or van to reach there. Rather than visiting Knuckles solo, it is advised to go hiking as groups with the support of a local guide.

If you like to know what are the most beautiful places to see in Knuckles, here is brief guidance from us. We have summarized all the top scenic places in the Knuckles Mountain Range, where you can discover the ultimate beauty of Sri Lankan hill country.

1. Corbett’s Gap

Corbett’s Gap is a popular attraction with magnificent views of the Knuckles range. It was named after the British surveyor Corbett who mapped the area. It opens out to several hundred kilometers long stunning views of the hill country. The top of the mountain is a wind funnel where the wind comes between two mountains. The elevation in altitude will bring you to a completely different climatic habitat and a mountainous terrain with plenty of cool, fresh air.

Corbett's Gap in Knuckles Mountain Range

When you are exploring through the Knuckles Mountain Range, you’ll come across a beautiful remote village filled with natural beauty. This village is Meemure, a blessed place with gorgeous landscapes. There you’ll see some striking mountain views including this triangular shape, 1310 m high Lakegala peak.

Lakegala peak in Meemure

There are several access points to Lakegala rock, but the safest access road is from Meemure Village. Although this mountain is quite photogenic, the steep angle of the rock makes hiking it rather difficult. It considers one of the most dangerous hikes in Sri Lanka.

3. Manigala

There are dozens of interesting mountain peaks with popular hiking trails in the Knuckles Mountain Range. Among them, Manigala is one of the best hiking trails with breathtaking sceneries. Manigala ridge is 1104 m high, 750 m long, and 250 m broad tabletop mountain. Since the road to the summit is well-defined, it can be climbed easily within one hour hike. When you reach the summit, you will find an incredible panorama of nature’s beauty at its greatest.

Manigala Ridge

Manigala is famous among visitors, due to its universal power in the summit. It considers a great spot to hike early in the morning and meditate for about an hour or two. You can concentrate the mind in a short period and you’ll feel the universal energy in the surroundings. Therefore, it is becoming a famous hiking spot among tourists, who like to feel the power and energy of this mighty mountain.

4. Yahangala

Yahangala or Bed Rock is one of the important places related to the epic legend of Ramayana . It is the place where the great king Ravana is sleeping until he wakes up again. This mountain is believed to be protected by God “Galē Bandāra”.

Yahangala

Since this mountain considers a holy place with spiritual powers, travelers have to come with good intentions for climbing. The hiking is quite risky and adventurous, where you may need support from local guides. Although climbing is strenuous, the site gives an excellent 360-degree view of the surrounding area.

5. Riverston

Riverston trek is one of the most popular, fairly easy hiking trails in the Knuckles Mountain range. It is about two and a half km one way and you can reach the viewpoint within an hour or two at most. It runs a section known as the Pitawala Pathana and then leads to Riverston Peak.

Riverston hiking trail

Riverston is highly famous among hikers since trekking through forests, rivers, and waterfalls gives a wonderful experience. You’ll pass tea plantations and terraced paddy fields while trekking through the area. This area is home to a few of the most spectacular hidden waterfalls, including Bambarakiri Ella and Sera Ella.

6. Mini World’s End

Situated close to Riverstone is another picturesque viewpoint calls as Mini World’s End or Pitawala Pathana in Sinhala. This escarpment has a sheer drop of several hundred meters, where you can get a panoramic view of misty mountains, stunning valleys, and lush green forests. Crystal clear streams and waterfalls enhance the beauty of the surroundings.

Mini World's End in Knuckles

Since Mini world’s end and Riverston peak locates on the same hiking trail, you can visit both places within one day. Clearly, it’s one of the most photogenic spots in Sri Lanka, where you can capture a jaw-dropping Instagram shot.

7. Rangala Pool

Rangala natural pool is one of the most popular interesting places among local travelers. It is famous as an alluring, but deadly natural pool in the Knuckles range. The pool is so beautiful with crystal clear water flowing like a waterfall through two boulders. One edge of this inviting pool is ideal for bathing with only a few inches of water. You can also see the bottom covered with pebbles on this side closer to the bridge.

Rangala natural pool

But little is known about the danger of the deep pool at the far end. There is a base pool, where the small waterfall brings water into this pool. This natural base pool is quite deep with a depth reaching almost over 30 feet. Therefore, it is strongly advised to be extra cautious while bathing in this beautiful, but deadly Rangala pool.

8. Knuckles Infinity Pool

Knuckles Infinity Pool is a hidden gem in the lush green jungles in the Knuckles Mountain Range. It is one of the top scenic places with extraordinary beauty, where you cannot find such a place anywhere else in Sri Lanka. You’ll meet this picturesque place while hiking through the Duwili Ella trail, a popular hiking trail in the area. Although this trail is a fairly strenuous one, it will give you an adventurous, yet a wonderful hiking experience in Sri Lanka.

Knuckles infinity pool

Hiking In The Beautiful Knuckles Mountain Range, Sri Lanka

' src=

Before I went to Sri Lanka I’d heard loads about its fascinating colonial history, its evocative archaeological sites, and its magnificent temples and monuments. I was also looking forward to relaxing on the island’s miles of palm-fringed beaches, and going whale-watching or on an elephant safari.

Contents (click to view)

But what had not occurred to me is that as well as all of this, Sri Lanka is a brilliant destination for people who love hiking and the outdoors. And nowhere in the country offers the opportunity to do that more than the Knuckles Mountain Range.

Hiking in the Knuckles Mountains Sri Lanka

I visited this beautiful area as part of a 12-day tour of south and west Sri Lanka . We spent two nights glamping off-grid, fully immersed in the beauty of nature, and did a 7.5-mile day hike. Along the way, we saw more gorgeous rolling landscapes than our brains could compute, met some incredibly friendly locals, learned loads about Sri Lankan nature, got to swim in a waterfall, and even had a run in with some leeches…

Despite that last part, it was absolutely one of my favourite destinations on the trip, and somewhere I’d definitely recommend to anyone planning a visit to Sri Lanka.

What is the Knuckles Mountain Range?

The Knuckles Mountain Range, also known as the Knuckles Forest Reserve, is a mountainous area in central Sri Lanka, straddling the districts of Matale and Kandy.

It covers an area of approximately 81 square miles (which is roughly the size of the cities of Edinburgh or Seattle). The Knuckles Mountains are dramatic, with 34 peaks ranging from 900m to 1900m in height.

The name ‘Knuckles’ was given to the area by early British surveyors, who decided the undulating peaks and folds of the most prominent five mountains resembled the knuckles of a clenched fist. However local Sinhalese people refer to the area as Dumbara Kanduvetiya or Dumbara Hills, which means ‘Mist-laden Mountain Range’.

The names of the five peaks, should you wish to know, are Kirigalpoththa, Gombaniya, Knuckles, Koboneelagala and Dotulugala.

Where is the Knuckles Forest Reserve Sri Lanka?

The Knuckles Forest Reserve is the protected area that covers the whole of the Knuckles Mountain range. Along with Horton Plains National Park and the Peak Wilderness Forest region, it forms Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands.

The nearest major city is Kandy, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) or two hours drive to the southwest. Other, closer (but small) towns around the edges include Matale, Riverston, Rattota, Hunnasgiriya and Rangala.

The whole area was collectively declared a Natural World Heritage Site in 2010.

Why visit the Knuckles Mountain Range

The star attraction of the Knuckles Mountains is its unspoiled peacefulness. Still far off the beaten track for most visitors (shhh.. don’t tell anyone or they’ll ruin it!), this is an area that takes a bit more effort to get to, but it’s worth it for the gorgeous landscapes and fresh mountain air.

What’s more, the locals haven’t yet got too tired of tourists traipsing through their villages, so they’ll still give you a friendly smile and let you take their photo – though to be fair, this is still pretty much true of all Sri Lankans.

The thing I loved most about it was the chance to spend a couple of days out in the countryside, away from other people, and away from the madness of the city. No wifi and limited phone signal: a real chance to connect with nature and let some of the cares of normal life drift away for a while.

Glamping in the Knuckles Sri Lanka

Normally I put my ‘where to stay’ section at the end of the post, for after you’ve read all about the activity or destination and decided you want to investigate further. But on this occasion I’m putting it front and centre, because the place we stayed in the Knuckles Mountain Range is part of the attraction.

We spent two nights at Wild Glamping Knuckles, a remote ‘glampsite’ with 10 fixed safari tents arranged in a row facing landscaped gardens, and a communal living/dining area with panoramic views overlooking the misty mountains. It’s not as fancy and comfy as a posh hotel, but what it lacks in TV channels and massive breakfast buffets it more than makes up for in location, fresh air, and peace.

There are other guesthouses and homestays in the Knuckles, of course, but if you can spare the money and the time to get here, I highly recommend it!

You can book Wild Glamping Knuckles here .

Staying at Wild Glamping Knuckles

If you’ve never been glamping before, you might not know what to expect from a stay at Wild Glamping Knuckles. Well, as the name suggests, glamping is like camping, but a bit more glam. You still sleep in a tent, in the outdoors, but with the addition of a few extra comforts, like a proper bed, and toilets, and sometimes even running water and electricity!

I’m not a massive fan of proper camping as I dislike tiny tents and sleeping on the cold, hard ground. But I love being outside in nature, so glamping is perfect for me. And this type of luxury camping in Sri Lanka was the best way to enjoy the peace of the beautiful Knuckles mountains.

Wild Glamping Knuckles was created to provide a way for visitors to enjoy the quiet beauty of Sri Lanka’s highlands, but with minimal impact to the environment. Where possible they use solar power, and meals are cooked on a barbecue using local produce.

There’s also no phone signal or wifi, so this is truly a chance to disconnect from the outside world and get in touch with the natural rhythms of nature.

What you get at Wild Glamping Knuckles

Your ‘room’ at Wild Glamping Knuckles is a safari tent – which is a big, fixed tent made of thick canvas, the size of a small hotel room. It’s suspended under a fixed structure with a roof to protect it from the elements, and built off the back of each one is your own private bathroom with running water (and it’s hot too!).

As the site is remote and off-grid, electricity comes from a generator, which is run twice a day, from 6-10 am, and from 6-10 pm (times may vary slightly). Outside of those times there’ll be nowhere to charge your phone or get a cold drink, so plan accordingly.

Wild Glamping Knuckles also provides two portable rechargeable lamps in each room, so if you need a light in the middle of the night, don’t worry! Just make sure you put them back on charge when the power is on.

Inside my glamping sfari tent in the Knuckles Sri Lanka

Breakfast and dinner is served in the communal area, and consists of traditional Sri Lankan breads and curries for breakfast, and barbecued meats and salads for dinner. Everyone eats at the same time, and gets the same meal, though if you have dietary requirements you can let them know in advance.

There’s no alcohol served here, but they don’t mind if you bring your own (though without electricity be prepared to drink your beers a little warm!).

Getting to Wild Glamping Knuckles

Wild Glamping Knuckles is located along a very bumpy unsealed road about 20 minutes from the small town of Rangala. To get there, you arrange to meet a driver in the car park in town, and then transfer yourself and your belongings to a 4WD jeep for the bumpy ride down into a valley, across a stream, and up the other side to the campsite. It’s important to remember that you’ll have to do this on the way out too, and if there is a big group of you with luggage the jeep driver will need to do more than one journey (a 40-minute round trip), so be sure to factor this into your plans.

Hiking in the Knuckles Mountains

Apart from relaxing and enjoying the peace and quiet, the main thing to do in the Knuckles Range is go for a walk!

The Knuckles Mountains are home to some of the best hikes in Sri Lanka, with loads of different options across a range of distances and elevations. From casual strolls through rolling farmland, colourful villages and down to waterfalls, to more challenging mountain ascents, the Knuckles Forest Reserve and surrounding region offers a decent choice of walking and hiking trails to suit most levels of ability and fitness.

An African tulip tree with red flowers photographed in the Knuckles range Sri Lanka

The landscape of the Knuckles is surprisingly varied, with lush farmland of tea plantations and rice paddy fields, grasslands, lofty pine forests, rushing streams and waterfalls, and a variety of different vegetation zones.

The lower slopes and valleys are classed as tropical lowland, with large palm trees and tea and rice fields. Higher up, you get cloud forests, rich in colourful orchids, ferns and moss. I had no idea there was so much beautiful forest in Sri Lanka!

Wild Glamping Knuckles works with local guides Nipuna Knuckles Trekking for all local walks and hikes, and you can book directly through the campsite.

Alternatively, Hidden Trails Sri Lanka also offers hiking trips into the Knuckles Mountain Range with pickup and drop off in Kandy, and accommodation at Wild Glamping Knuckles.

Hiking In The Beautiful Knuckles Mountain Range, Sri Lanka

The Heel Oya Trek

The walk we did was the Heel Oya Trek – a relatively easy 7.5-mile trip that started at the campsite.

We walked downhill through rainbow-painted villages to a small river, and then up the other side, through tea estates and a pine forest, to a spectacular viewpoint. Our guide, Janaka, stopped frequently to show us different plants and talk about their uses, as well us telling more about the area and the community.

Then it was back down though terraced rice paddy fields, past vivid red African tulip trees, to the Heel Oya Waterfall, where we were able to have a swim or dip our feet in the refreshing water.

Along the way, we stopped to say hello to locals – who were all incredibly friendly and happy to let me take their photos. Most of them are either farm workers who work in the tea and rice fields, or they have jobs supporting the local community.

Because we stopped so frequently to take photos the walk ended up taking us about 6 hours. We had a late home-cooked lunch at a local house, and were then driven by jeep back to the campsite, where we were able to wash off the day with a hot shower before staff lit a fire for the full camping experience.

Other Knuckles Mountains hikes you could do

We were only there for two days so I didn’t have time to try all these walks, but here are some other alternatives offered by local guides Nipuna Knuckles Trekking .

High Knuckles Trek

This one is for the dedicated hikers who like a challenge! 14 miles long, taking a full 8-9 hours, this walk traverses tea plantations and forests to summit the highest point of the Knuckles range at 1838 m. The guide brochure describes it as “a beautiful and challenging hike that takes you through different elevations exposing you to different flora and fauna unique to this region. It is well worth the effort.”

To get this done in a day you’ll need to start early, around 6 am.

Vivid green landscapes with terraced rice paddy fields and palm trees in the Knuckles Forest Reserve

Waterfall Trek

A much more manageable, but still somewhat challenging 8.5-mile hike, through terraced tea plantations and green forests, and down to a waterfall, where you can swim if you want (but allow extra time for this). You’ll need to start relatively early, as this hike will probably take you 5-7 hours.

The author (a woman with long blonde curly hair) cooling her feet in the refreshing Heel Oya Waterfall in the Knuckles Mountains Sri Lanka

Corbett’s Gap Walk

This 7-mile hike takes you up to one of the best view points in the Knuckles mountain range, Corbett’s Gap. It is named after the British surveyor Corbett who mapped the area. A fairly easy and mostly flat walk that shouldn’t take more than 4 hours, depending on how often you stop for photos!

A picturesque walk takes you through a pine forest, tea plantations and eucalyptus trees ending up at a viewpoint that looks onto a valley. It’s about 4 miles long and will take about 2-3 hours, plus the return journey, which is by jeep. You can also take a detour to the Burnside waterfall for a dip.

Burnside is said to get its name from the pine needles that carpet the ground around the pine forest here. Sometimes in extreme hot weather the needles dry out and catch fire. Hence: ‘Burn-side’.

A woman in a floppy straw hat and red top walking through pine forest in the Sri Lanka highlands

Mini World’s End Riverston

Not to be confused with the more famous Little World’s End viewpoint in Horton Plains National Park, this is a beautiful hike to an escarpment with a sheer drop of 1192 metres and amazing views. It’s a medium-easy hike that starts from the Knuckles conservation centre in Deanston. It’s not something you can do in a day from Wild Glamping Knuckles, but it’s definitely worth a visit if you have a bit more time in the area.

Wildlife in the Knuckles Mountains

While camping in the mountains, or along your hike, you might be lucky enough to spot some fabulous wildlife. The area is known as a bird-watchers paradise, home to 128 bird species of which 17 are endemic to the region. There are also 31 different types of mammals, 60 butterfly species, and 53 reptile species. Even on our short hike we spotted a black eagle, a sambar deer, and toque macaques. Though note there are no elephants in this part of the country.

A toque macaque - a small brown monkey with a pink face - in Sri Lanka

Watch out for leeches!

One animal you will almost certainly see – though possibly less welcome – are leeches. These are not the giant, slimy, slug-like creatures you see in Victorian medical dramas. They’re skinny little wormy things, about the size of a hairgrip, and they’re surprisingly fast moving!

Wild Glamping Knuckles supplied us with leech socks for our walk, which are basically like fabric knee-high boots that you wear over your trousers and socks, and inside your shoes. You might think they look ridiculous, but I say they’re pretty badass! And more importantly, they work. We took ours off for the last part of the hike because we were getting hot, and one of our group immediately got bitten!

Should you have a guide for trekking the Knuckles Mountains?

It’s actually prohibited to go hiking without a guide in the Knuckles Forest Reserve, so the short answer is yes! But even if it weren’t against the law to wander off without a local guide, there are plenty of reasons why it’s a really good idea to have one for your Knuckles trek.

With limited maps of the area available, and vast numbers of unmarked paths, it’s very easy to get lost. The weather can change quickly, or you might get attacked by leeches, so having a guide is a really good idea for your safety. Plus a guide will be able to sort out permits, and will have an endless supply of local knowledge about the people, flora and fauna to help you make the most of your trip.

And hiring a guide for the day puts money back into the local economy, so it really is a win-win for everyone!

If you don’t want to organise your guide through Wild Glamping Knuckles, you can also book directly with Nipuna Knuckles Trekking , or book a local guide through Knuckles Base Camp or Overa Tours .

Janaka, our Knuckles Mountains hiking guide, explaining some of the history of the area

How to get to the Knuckles Sri Lanka

Public transport in this part of Sri Lanka is sparse, intermittent, and quite unreliable. Roads are often steep, very windy and narrow, and sometimes the surface is poor.

If you can afford it, the best way to get there and around is to hire a private car and driver, either from Colombo, or from Kandy. This way you’ll have the flexibility of being able to go where you want, when you want.

Alternatively, Overa Tours , Hidden Trails Sri Lanka and Knuckles Base Camp all offer trips into the Knuckles Mountains with pickup and drop off in Kandy.

If your budget won’t stretch and you have time to spare, you can get a bus from Kandy to Teldeniya, and from there it’s probably easiest to try to find a local driver to take you the last part of your journey.

What to wear for glamping and hiking in the Sri Lanka highlands

For hiking in the Knuckles Mountain Range you’ll obviously need comfortable clothes and shoes, and a waterproof jacket in case of rain. Though unless you’re doing a multi-day trek trainers are fine; you don’t need proper hiking boots.

The most important thing to remember is that even though it may be hot, you still need long trousers and socks that cover your ankles. But note that if you don’t have leech socks the little f**kers can still worm their way in, even if you do have your ankles covered, so if you’re concerned, you might want to buy some leech socks of your own!

Also note that due to the elevation it can get quite chilly at night and there’s no heating in the tents, so you probably want a light jacket or jumper, and something comfy to sleep in.

Photo taken from the window of the car of the Knuckles mountains and forest with rain clouds and rain drops on the wing mirror

If you think you might want to swim in the waterfalls, then bring swimming stuff, and a small travel towel can be useful. And don’t forget to bring a water bottle ( I use this one ).

If you’re staying at Wild Glamping Knuckles you don’t need to bring a torch as these are provided, but if your phone battery is unreliable you might want to bring a portable charger ( mine is this one ) to keep you going until the generator is fired up.

A woman takes a photo of a landscape in the Knuckles Mountains Sri Lanka

And suncream and a hat are a must if you’re going to be out all day in the sunshine. I swear by this sunscreen , which is a bit more expensive than some but it really works and you only need to apply it once day.

Things to do in Kandy

Before or after your trip into the Knuckles Mountains, you’ll probably want to stay at least one night in Kandy, which is about two hours’ drive away.

Kandy is a major Sri Lankan city which was once the capital of the ancient kings of Sri Lanka. It’s famous in particular for two not-to-be missed things:

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

This is one of the most sacred places of worship in the Buddhist world and is a UNESCO world heritage site. Inside the temple is a small room, and in that is a gold casket said to contain a tooth of the Buddha. Visitors come from all over the world to glimpse the casket and make offerings. If you can manage to visit on a holy day when the window into the room is open, it’s a pretty intense experience.

Kandyan dancing

Traditional Kandyan dancing is an important part of Sinhalese culture, passed down through family generations. The dances involve both men and women dressed in elaborate costumes, sometimes including ornate masks and even fire. Some of the dances tell stories relating to Sri Lankan mythology. It’s beautiful and impressive to watch, and definitely worth seeing while you’re in Kandy.

Where to stay in Kandy

We spent one night at Amaya Hills Kandy , a beautiful 5* hotel perched on a hillside just outside the city. It has a gorgeous pool overlooking the city and surrounding mountains, and the sunset views from the rooftop bar are among the best in the whole of Sri Lanka.

Knuckles Mountain Range

Knuckles Mountain Range

Weather and climate at knuckles range, ecosystem and biodiversity at knuckles range, a trek through knuckles range.

Knuckles range also called ‘Dumbara’ mountain range lies in the central highlands of Sri Lanka , in the districts of Matale and Kandy.

Knuckles Mountain Range

To the northern end of the highlands is where the knuckles mountain range exactly lies, and to the south and east of the mountain range is the Mahaweli river basin while to the west is Riverton and the Matale plains. This mountain range takes its name due to its view of the mountain range of five peaks in the west most massifs that resembles the sight of a knuckle over a clenched fist when viewed at certain locations in the central province.

Thus it gains its English name “Knuckles” as per the British surveyors named it whilst the Sinhala name “Dumbara” goes with the meaning ‘mist-laden mountain range.

Knuckles Mountain Range

Enriched flora and fauna adds a better aesthetic value to the thick forest reserve while the range is of a great scientific interest too. The thick layers of cloud in the higher elevations experiment climatic variations throughout the year.

Knuckles conservation forest reserve covers approximately 0.03% of the island’s land area signifying the country’s rich biodiversity in nature. More than 34% of Sri Lanka’s endemic plantations such as trees, shrubs and other medicinal plants are found in the thick forests inside of Knuckles harboring its valuable ecology.

Due to its utmost naturalistic diversity, Knuckles Conservation Forest was included in UNESCO natural world heritage list from 2010 onwards and trekking inside of knuckles initially requires permission from the National Wild Life Department.

The Knuckles mountain range has unpredictable weather conditions that transform within few minutes.

Breeze of rains could occur at any time of the day where thick layers of mist could shroud at any minute in any part of the forest reserve.

The average rainfall at Knuckles ranges from 3000-5000ml and the temperature ranges from 5 ̊C to 35 ̊C. The Southwest monsoon brings rain through a gap in the range of mountains.

Knuckles Mountain Range

Due to the variation of rainfall throughout the year, the travelers could enjoy their trekking as follows. From December to February, the rainfall is moderate, and from March to May; the rainfall being low, and from June to September; there is a lowest possibility of rain and most of the waterfalls get dried up meanwhile.

During September to November, the rainfall becomes higher, and the leeches’ paradise least attracts trekkers during this season. Most of the trekkers love to pay a visit at the forest reserve during December to May as the flourished ecosystem nests the climatic experiences at central highlands while the waterfalls are in their full flows at the time.

The average wind speed is around 7.2km per hour (7.2 kmph) and the humidity in the range lies between 57-90%. Also there are around 77 villages around the knuckles range which are inhibited by traditional villagers who depend upon Rice, Chena and Cardamom cultivation’s.

Kalupahana in the Knuckles range is very popular for Cardamom productions where there are acres of Cardamom plantations that set productions for exportation’s as well. This is because the climatic conditions really suit for these plantations and cultivation’s, but this has become a common threat to the natural ecosystem of the area.

Diversity of species and the great diversity in the forest cover support the well-established ecosystem in the range. Biodiversity is thus a hotspot of nature at Knuckles range that assures home to many endangered and endemic animal species and plants. Knuckles range is the home for many mammals such as spotted deer, barking deer, mouse deer, wild boars, elephants, samburs, giant squirrels, purple faced leaf monkeys, mongoose, porcupines, leopards, wild oxen, and many others.

There are several endemic lizard species found at the forest reserve and some of them are Crestless Lizard (Calotes Leocephalus), Kangaroo Lizard (Otocryptus Wiegmanni), Leaf Nose Lizard (Ceretophora Tennennti) which is only found at the Knuckles range, Pigmy Lizard (Cophotis ceylonica) and other. In addition, the Knuckles Conservation Forest is deemed a UNESCO World Heritage partly as 64% of the amphibians and 51%of the reptiles here are endemic to Sri Lanka.

Diversity of bird species is another attractive feature that many eco-travelers get attracted to trek through the knuckles range. This area is home for more than 200 bird species and around 15 of them are endemic to Sri Lanka: Spot Wing Thrush, Sri Lankan Blue Magpie Jungle Fowl, Yellow-fronted barbet, small barbet, Sri Lankan Warbler, White faced starling, Sri Lanka white-eye, Black-headed Bulbul, Yellow-eared Bulbul, Dusk Blue Flycatcher, Brown Capped Babbler and Layard’s parakeets are among them.

The forest cover is of a great diversification with dry and evergreen forests, humid semi-evergreen forests, montane vegetation forests, tropical sub-montane forests, sub-montane evergreen rain forests, dry and wet pathanas, savannas, plains etc.

Along the river banks verdant riverine flourish while savannas expand along hill slopes. The specialty about the Knuckles range is that 20% of the plants herein are found to be endemic to Sri Lanka.

A wide range of hardwood such as ‘Kaluwara’ and “Maho’, and herbal plants with an immense value are found evidently inside the forest reserve.

Knuckles Mountain Range

While there are around 160 endemic flowering plants, the Knuckles Forest Range is also the home to one-third of the country’s flowering species which includes 25 types of orchids. The upper cloud forests are vibrant with colorful orchids, ferns and mosses. Also the thick canopy of short and climate appropriate trees facilitates the rich and humid soil to grow more plants with natural fertilizing.

The most unique aspect of Knuckles range that supports its ecosystem and the great biodiversity is its microcosms of various climatic conditions found island wide. Ranging from extremely wet to near arid, the forest reserve presents climatic variations that suits for the growth of its plants and survival of other species.

Knuckles mountain range features 34 peaks ranging in height between 900m to 1900m. The highest peak, “Gombaniya” is 1906m (6248ft) in height. The Knuckles mountain range is one such loveliest nature attraction to the local and international travelers affording immense trekking possibilities at the untouched zone of natural beauty.

The significance of biodiversity interspersed with cascading waterfalls, changing terrain of grasslands, thick canopies of forest grounds, rugged mountain peaks and heavenly cloud forests add an extra diversification to the Knuckles range.

The mountain range conquers an area of 18,512 hectares of land area making it a wild paradise for trekkers. Travel enthusiasts who are keenly interested in hard treks and eco traveling tend to love a hike over 40 plus kilometers inside the mountain range taking 2 to 3 or more days while camping at nights inside the forests.

There are a number of routes that paves entry to the Knuckles Conservation forest and the two most famous routes are from Matale via Rattota, and from Waththegama via Panvila. These two routes are the most famous entries among local trekkers and are equally hard to trek.

I have conquered the mountains through both these ways and it was really a great experience I have gained in my life. In 2019 April, I stepped to the Knuckles mountain range initially and it was from the entry point at village “Atanwala”. The trek was around 42km and I did pass the island’s smallest village which is called “Walpolamulla” that was currently being isolated except for some farmers who came to check on their cultivation’s. The natural geographical variations were profound throughout the hike and it made us cross over streams, climb over dangerous slopes and meet with the leech attacks very often.

On the first night, we camped around “Dumbara” falls. Dumbara falls or “Dumbara ella” in Sinhala is called to be the heart of the Knuckles mountain range. This waterfall is in her full flows during the rainy season, but never dries up during the other times of the year. The waterfall gets the Sinhala name of the mountain range, which is “Dumbara”, as it is one of the most important destinations inside the mountain range. There was a little nervousness when camping at nights, because it was said that there were leopards coming at nights to the caves near the fall.

Also due to the unexpected flow of water, it is not safe to camp at the rocks standing in the middle of the water flow. Thus we camped at a huge rock beneath the stream; coming down from the waterfall. We had to face a continuous shower of rain throughout the night, but the following day was a sunny day that made us dried up our accessories to get ready for another day of adventure. In the morning hours, we were able to see hundreds of butterflies in different colors and we felt that area was a kind of paradise for butterflies.

The second day of the trail was planned for reaching “Duwili” falls via Infinity Pool. Infinity pool is one such photogenic destination that showcases a beautiful view of the mountains around. The end of this water stream seems to be infinite and thus it gains its name.

sri lanka knuckles travel

Duwili ella, where “Duwili” is ‘Dust’ in English, gets its name due to its fall of water significantly as dust particles from above. One other important factor with regard to this fall is the visibility of the waterfall in both the front and interior views. The interior view can be gained accessing to the right end corner of the Duwili ella cave.

The Duwili ella cave is one such famous spots among trekkers as it allows the trekkers to rest inside this cave even without setting any camping tent. This cave doesn’t get wet even during high rainfalls. The place was an eternal heaven for me as a nature enthusiast. This was my first trek at the Knuckles range and I started falling for Knuckles more and more thereafter.

Knuckles Mountain Range

My second visit to Knuckles range was during last November 2019. It was through the entry point at Bambarella village in Waththegama. Starting the journey from the Lebanon estate at Bambarella, we reached the famous “Rathnagiriya” mountain that let us gain the last panoramic view of the knuckles mountains before we enter in to the forest reserve. It took us around 6 1/2hours to reach the ‘KMP wādiya’ at Kalupahana to rest for the day. KMP is a resting place used by the cardamom cultivators from the villages such as “Ranamure”. These villagers also have got used to help out the trekkers who come to their places and they are very kind people rich in hospitality. “Mahathun mama”; a villager who’s mostly in his late 50’s is one such famous character who lives in KMP and helps out the trekkers who visit the place randomly.

We stayed our first night at KMP and on the next day morning, we conquered the mountain “Thunthisgala”. This mountain is very specific among the other mountain peaks in the range, because it allows us to see all other 33 peaks in one panoramic frame, if the day has a good climate. And thus it gains its name: reflecting “Thun-this” for other 33 mountains belonging to the Knuckles range. As the mountain is 1,628m (5,341ft) in height, the area is sunken in thick cloud layers most of the time. This mountain is also called in the name “Thunhisgala”, because it has three heads or three visible peaks on it.

Knuckles Mountain Range

After conquering this mountain, we came back to the KMP. After having the lunch we prepared, we started our next trail to Duwili ella. It was my second time to Duwili ellaand the trek was through a different route. We took around 4 ½ to 5 hours and reached Duwili ella cave to rest for the night. It was my first night at Duwili ella cave, since at the last time we camped at the foot of the waterfall as there were another set of trekkers who already had settled inside the cave. Thus, another day spent in the heaven with all the nature’s soothing.

sri lanka knuckles travel

On the third day of our trail, we started descending to our destination end which is the village “Ranamure”. During the trek, we could reach the “Infinity Pool” and closer to that we could visit the “Sansun ella”. ‘Sansun ella’ has got its name because of its ‘quietness’ in the flow. The Sinhala term ‘sansun’ refers to the ‘calm and quiet’ in English.

sri lanka knuckles travel

There are plenty of other waterfalls streamed from the water ways running down everywhere. Many of them are difficult to reach, especially during the rainy season.

We trekked through thick forests, grasslands, pathanas, and many other geographical variations. It was more than a 50km trek that we continued for three days inside the Knuckles mountain range.

Apart from the two routes I have taken to enter the Knuckles range, the trekkers are also fond of using popular hiking trails such as trail to “Alugallena” via Thangappuwa from Corbett’s Gap, trail to “ Meemure ” village from Kalupahana, trail to Mini World’s end from Deanston, trail to Dothalugala from Deanston, trail to Nitro Caves from Corbett’s Gap, or may be using the motor way running East of Kandy to Hunnasgiriya.

The B road from Hunnasgiriya leads to the Corbett’s Gap that opens the panoramic views of the Knuckles range. From Corbett’s Gap, the road that leads to Meemure can be travelled by a vehicle, and the Hunnasgiriya road that leads to Kalugala at Udadumbara is another entry point to the Knuckles range. The famous “Yahangala” and “Gerandi eli” can be reached by trekking in this Kalugala area.

Knuckles Mountain Range

The Knuckles mountain range and the conservation forest is a fragile forest eco system that has at a large scale threat due to forest clearance for cultivation’s and also because of the invasive exotic plant species that spread into montane forests and grasslands, destroying the endemic Sri Lankan flora and fauna. We should take actions to save these rainforests to safeguard future on earth.

With the amazing misty mountain peaks, overflowing waterfalls , melodies of wildlife , and thousands of unique flora and fauna species, Sri Lanka owns a bunch of fascinations. Of course, there is no harm in introducing them as the major reasons that attract one to this beautiful island . However, among these amusements, are the wonderful mountain ranges, covered with greenery! They not only contribute to enhancing the natural splendours of Sri Lanka but also to offering perfect hiking opportunities for adventure seekers from around the world. Indeed, there are a bunch of amazing locations as such on this beautiful land. Nevertheless, it is no secret that the Knuckles Mountain Range is a major highlight among them. Thus, we thought of enlightening you about this wonderful attraction through this read today!

However, if you have never heard about the Knuckles Mountain Range before, let us first give you a brief introduction about it. Before the British sovereign, locals used to call it “the Dumbara Kaduwetiya”, as the mountain range was concealed with mist most time of the day. Besides, boasting a variety of landscapes and biodiversity, the Knuckles mountain range is also where the Knuckles Forest reserve is located. The relevant authorities classified this area as a climatic reserve back in 1873, as a conservation forest in 2000, and then as a national man and biosphere reserve. Going beyond it could also become one of the two natural UNESCO world heritage sites that Sri Lanka owns, whereas the other one being the Sinharaja rain forest .

Above all, wondering where in Sri Lanka this wonderful mountain range is located? Keep calm! The following section will provide you with the answer to this question.

Where is the Knuckles Mountain Range Located?

The Knuckles mountain range lies in the Central province of Sri Lanka between the districts Kandy and Matale. Moreover, these peaks take the shape of the knuckles of a clenched fist. The five main hills, Kirigalpoththa, Gombaniya, Koboneelagala, Dotalugala, and Knuckles are located in such a way when viewed from certain areas in Kandy . In addition to the main five peaks that form the shape of the knuckles, there are around 27 cliffs that form the mountain range. Aliyawetunaela, Manigala, Yakungegala, Wamarapugala, Laggala or Lakegala, Thunthisgala or Kalupahana are some of them. Besides, situated about 3000 ft above sea level, Knuckles mountain range dominates over 18500 Ha of the island’s land. However, being a mist-laden mountain range with lush vegetation and gushing waterfalls , the beauty it adds to the surrounding is simply impressive.

How to Reach the Knuckles Mountain Range?

There are three main routes to enter the mountain range. Among them, the B-grade route that connects Hunnasgiriya and Meemure is the most popular among hikers. However, many buses travel to Hunnasgiriya from Kandy , but from there onwards, travellers have to use a private vehicle. In addition, one can find many rural and isolated villages surrounding the mountain range from where a footpath can be found which leads to the jungle. Another route to reach Knuckles from Kandy is from Kandy – Wattegama road. Moreover, there is also a route from Atanwela which can be accessed from Matale-Rattota road.

The Awe-inspiring Landscape of Knuckles

The landscape of the mountain range is so vivid with dry evergreen forests, montane forests, sub-montane forests, dry and wet patina grasslands, and savannas. The Dumbara valley is a deep gorge that is surrounded by mountains situated at the Knuckles Mountain Range. Pitawala Pathana is another unique landscape that stretches up to 1000 acres in this mountain range. In fact, it is a grass plain with a rocky slab with a thin layer of oil. According to the International Union of Conservation of Nature, the Pitawala pathana is a rare grassland that evolved for thousands of years due to some geological phenomenon.

However, you can only find short and gnarled trees here, as winds are heavy at this place. In addition to all these, two escarpments, called mini world’s end similar to the world’s end at Horton plains also intensify the diversity of landscape in the area.

The Climate Condition

Knuckles hills inherit a climate that changes within a short time and still adds up to its charm. However, the forest reserve receives rains from both Northwestern and Southeastern monsoons. The average annual rainfall is about 3000-5000mm. The temperature in the thicket can vary from 5 o C to 35 o C degree Celsius. Winds frequent the mountains throughout the year and the speed of the wind is about 7.2 kmh -1 . The mist that blankets the mountain range does nothing but add to its hypnotizing beauty.

Main Lures at the Knuckles Mountain Range

The knuckles mountain range is flaunting its lush vegetation and cascading waterfalls in every corner. It might be head wrecking to choose where to go and what to do. However, hiking , trekking, and waterfall hunting are popular activities out there, while sightseeing in rural villages like Meemure is also a possible option. Riverston is another place that attracts foreigners and tourists alike. Duwili Ella, Saree Ella, Jodu Ella, Bambarella, Hulu Ganga falls, and Dumbara Ella are a few of the cascading beauties that turn this place into a paradise.

However, as mentioned earlier, one can also find Pitawala pathana, which is a strange grassland that encounters nowhere else on the island. Moreover, two escarpments of land called the mini world’s end are among the places of tourist interest. One of them can be reached from the Hunnasgiriya – Meemure road while the other one should be accessed from Pitawala patana. In addition to all these, Corbet’s gap will give a view of the unspoiled beauty of the peaks and the rural villages below that while the Nitro cave will give one of those experiences you only encounter in tv series!

Hiking at the Knuckles Mountain Range

While Knuckles is a paradise for hikers, it is one of the most difficult hiking trails in Sri Lanka. Now, if you expect to hike, it is recommended to use the guidance of an experienced guide. Luckily there are around 34 hiking trails to explore the Knuckles mountain range. Some of them fall through rural villages and some go through waterfalls and lush forest cover. Moreover, the Knuckles mountain range gives birth to many waterfalls sprung from river Mahaweli (the longest river in the country), river Hulu, river Kalu and falls to nearby reservoirs.

Besides, let us now go through some of the best hiking trails that one can enjoy at Knuckles.

Dothalugala Nature Trails

The entrance route via Hunnasgiriya will take you through the Dothalugala nature trails which leads to the popular Dothalugala camping site. This trail starts from Deanston Knuckles Conservation Center (KCC). However, you need to get a permit to enter the KCC. Other than the Deanston mini world’s end and stunning view from Dothalugala, this trail can take you to Corbet’s gap.

Corbet’s Gap

Corbet’s gap is a deep valley between the Knuckles mountain range, and also a rain shadow area. The vegetation is a combination of wet, dry, and montane. One can score excellent panoramic views from the Corbet’s gap.

Kotaganga Seven Falls Hunting

Appropriate for a one-day hike, Kotaganga trails fall amid a neighbouring village of Knuckles Range, and Kotaganga. There is a footpath through the village that leads to the hills. Besides, Kotaganga (a river) falls in seven pieces from the top of the mountains, thus it takes the name seven falls. Moreover, hikers can climb each hill and reach the origin of the waterfalls where one can find the Thangappuwa campsite. Moreover, one can enjoy the sight of the famous knuckle shape of the mountain range from the campsite.

Tip for Kotaganga Seven Falls Hunting

You can travel from Kandy to Teldeniya by bus and catch the bus to Kotaganga from the Teldeniya bus stand. The bus will take you closer to the footpath that leads to the mountains.

Duwili Ella Trails

Knuckles Range is a hub of scenic waterfalls , but Duwili Ella is the iconic beauty among them. 40m in height, the caves behind the waterfall are the most attractive feature that it bears. One can get behind the waterfalls and this makes for perfect social media-worthy clicks! However, the Duwili Ella trail begins from the rural village Atanwala. Travellers can reach Atanwala easily, from Matale. The hike can be completed within a day. Still, 2 days are praised for the full experience. Hikers can greet about eleven waterfalls on the way (unless it’s the dry season). The Dumbara Ella which is cascading from about 20m above is the most eye-catching.

A massive cave occupied by bats!

The nitro caves are suggested to be thousands of years old. It gets its name due to the bat deposits which contain nitrate. It is better to choose this trail if you don’t mind getting a little dirty. However, choosing it would indeed become a completely different experience. The nature trail that leads to the cave starts at the Corbet’s gap.

Knuckles Conservation Forest

The Knuckles conservation forest lies in the Knuckles mountain range and is a hotspot of biodiversity. It is the home for 1033 plant species that belong to 141 families out of which 15% are endemic to Sri Lanka. 128 bird species nest in the forest and 17 of them are endemic. Wild boar, black-naped hare, mouse deer, sambar deer, elephant, purple-faced leaf monkey, squirrels, civet cats, and golden palm cat are some mammals out of the 31 mammals who call the forest reserve their home. In addition, about 20 amphibian species live here including the Leaf-nosed lizard and Kirthisinghe’s rock frog. According to IUCN, Kirthisinghe’s rock frog is classified as a critically endangered species.

Philips Gara, Blotched filamented barb, and Martenstyn barb are among the fish species that live here. Moreover, it is a utopia for butterflies, making it a home for 60 types of butterflies, out of which Birdwing and Blue Mormon are endemic to Sri Lanka.

The Fascination of Bird Watching at Knuckles

Knuckles reserve is a paradise for birdwatchers and ornithologists as many of the rare birds can be observed in their natural habitat. If you are one of them, an evening stroll in search of these amazing creatures will definitely surprise you.

List of Commonly Visible Birds at Knuckles

In fact, the reserve is home to 128 bird species. Further, 17 out of 23 endemic birds of Sri Lanka are frequent at this destination. Some of them are listed below.

  • Sri Lankan Swallow

The Best Time to Hike at Knuckles

According to the tourist guides, December to February is the best time to hike the Knuckles mountain range even though the possibility of rain being moderate. During this season, the streams and waterfalls descending the hills are full of water and thus, boost eye-catchy sights. March to May, the possibility of the rain is low and is also a proper time for hiking and trekking. The chance of rain is minimal between June to September, but some water springs might have dried up.

However, the weather in the Knuckles mountain range is unpredictable, as it pays to be prepared for weather shifts. Beginning from September until November, the Knuckles range experiences rainfall. Therefore, due to hardships of travel, these hills don’t get many visitors during that period. However, the stunning and unique view of mist-enveloped hills, gloomy skies during the rainy season, make Knuckles stand out among all other hiking spots on the island.

Knuckles Mountain Range: Overview

The green plains of the Duwili Ella valley surrounding the Knuckles Mountain Range

Named after its resemblance to human knuckles, the Knuckles Mountain Range is a sheer giant when it comes to biodiversity. It contains 34 mountains ranging from 900 to 2,000 metres in elevation, vegetation that changes from grasslands to tropical montane evergreen forests to cloud forests and an astonishing array of animals: more than 128 species of birds, 20 species of amphibians, 53 reptile species and 31 mammal species. Yep, there’s a lot in there.

For these reasons, the Knuckles Mountain Range is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Trekking in the Knuckles is the best way to experience the wild and raw nature of Sri Lanka’s interior and it makes for the best hike in Sri Lanka.

As you would expect with such a massive and diverse wilderness area, the trekking opportunities are unlimited. There are around 34 different hiking trails throughout the Knuckles Mountain Range, many of which are considered to be some of the toughest in the country.

Known as the ‘last frontier’ of Sri Lanka, many of these Knuckles Mountain Range hiking trails are completely unmarked and go deep within the jungle.

In sum, the Knuckles is a wild place.

Knuckles Mountain Range: Location

The Knuckles Mountain Range lies in central Sri Lanka, located between Kandy and Matale. There are various ways to access the Knuckles, but by far the most convenient way is to come from Kandy.

The hike to Duwili Ella waterfall starts from the small and extremely beautiful village of Pitawala in the Riverston Region, which is 57 km north of Kandy.

Best Time to Go Trekking in the Knuckles Range

The best time to go trekking in the Knuckles Mountain Range is during the dry season, from December to February. You can hike outside of this timeframe, but you may encounter some rain and the leeches will be even more aggressive than normal. The silver lining is that the waterfalls will be very full and majestic.

We hiked to Duwili Ella in late March and we were fine. We encountered a bit of rain on our second day, but it was not debilitating. The jungle cover is pretty thick, and the humidity is 100%, so you’ll be wet with sweat anyway. (Seriously).

Important: the weather is notoriously unpredictable in the Knuckles, so always be prepared for rain, even if hiking in the dry season.

Duwili Ella: Trail Overview

Hiking down a steep hill at Duwili Ella whilst trekking in the Knuckles.

Considered the crown jewel of all the Knuckles Mountain Range hiking trails , Duwili Ella is a 40-metre waterfall hidden deep within the jungle. What makes Duwili Ella so special is the cave behind the waterfall, which allows hikers to camp behind the waterfall.

If that wasn’t enough, the waterfall sits a few hundred metres above the jungle canopy, allowing you the most magnificent view out over the Knuckles Range.

Oh yeah, and there are also 3 other incredible waterfalls on the way to Duwili Ella, including a natural infinity pool overlooking the jungle (the infamous Knuckles infinity pool). It’s pretty epic and the best hike in Sri Lanka for a reason.

How Hard Is the Hike to Duwili Ella?

The hike to Duwili Ella is an out-and-back trail of approximately 16 km each way.

The trail itself is challenging. The terrain is undulating at the best of times and for many stretches, very steep. The ground is incredibly slippery and you must constantly pay attention to keep your footing.

And if that all wasn’t enough, the humidity is around 100% and the leeches are nothing short of horrific. We’re talking dozens crawling over your feet at any given time. Overall, it is a difficult and exhausting trail.

But the good news? It’s also awesome and so worth all the effort.

Do You Need A Guide For Trekking in the Knuckles?

Dotti and our Guide for Trekking in Knuckles, the best hike in Sri Lanka.

Officially, trekking in the Knuckles Mountain Range requires a guide and hikers are only allowed to enter the reserve with a qualified guide.

That said, no one checked us when we entered, or throughout the duration of our hike.

However, we cannot stress enough the importance of a guide for trekking to Duwili Ella. The trail is unmarked and there are many river crossings (about 4 – 5). At each crossing, it is unclear where you should continue and thus it is imperative to have a guide to show you the way.

We always hike independently and without a guide when possible, however, we would not have been able to do the Duwili Ella hike without our great guide.

Read: 21 Amazing Places to Visit in Anuradhapura in 2024

Hiring a guide doesn’t mean you need to get the whole package (porters, cooks, etc.) and below we’ll explain how you can organise a guide and hike to Duwili Ella (and yes, that Knuckles infinity pool) as independently as possible.

How to organise a guided hike to Duwili Ella Waterfall

The easiest way to organise a guide for Duwili Ella is to contact Suranga from Trail Oka .

Suranga speaks great English and has brilliant contacts all throughout the Knuckles Mountain Range. He is happy to organise a guide only, without any of the extras that many other companies will try to tack on. Suranga was very helpful and can answer any questions you may have. For example, he helped us figure out our transport to Pitawala.

You can contact Suranga at +94 70 400 1404 (via WhatsApp or text if you have a Sri Lankan sim). You can also email him at [email protected] .

Our guide was Loka Banda from Pitawala and we couldn’t recommend him enough. He’s super experienced in the area and somehow hikes those crazy jungle trails in flip-flops.

If you would like to contact Loka Banda directly, you can call him on 076 277 1000. Note that you will need a Sinhala speaker to call for you as Loka Banda’s English is quite limited.

Guided Tours For Trekking in the Knuckles

If you like your activities a bit more on the organised side, don’t have all your own gear or are just short on time and want to make things easier for yourself, there are a ton of tours for trekking in the Knuckles .

Some of the best tours in the Knuckles Mountain Range include:

  • A 2-day Trekking and Camping Tour Through the Knuckles
  • A 4-day Trekking Tour Through the Knuckles
  • The Knuckles Leopard Trail Trek
  • Waterfall Trekking in the Knuckles

Transportation – Getting There and Away

Road leading to Duwili Ella in the Knuckles Mountain Range.

The hike to Duwili Ella starts from Pitawala village in the Riverston district. Pitawala is 57 km north of Kandy. The road is rough, very windy and in incredibly bad shape.

You can get to Kandy by train or bus, depending on where you are coming from. Have a look on 12Go for options.

Kandy – Pitawala

To get to Pitawala from Kandy, you have two options:

1. You can hire a tuk-tuk to drive you the entire way. It should take about 4 hours total and cost around 8000 – 10,000 LKR. Be sure to bargain!

2. Via public transport.  It’s actually pretty straightforward to get to Pitawala from Kandy via public transport.

  • First, take a bus to Matale. Buses for Matale leave from Kandy’s bus station regularly.
  • From Matale, there is a bus that leaves at 3.30 pm and arrives in the village at 6.00 pm.

The entire journey takes about 4 hours and will cost around 260 LKR per person (about 70 US cents).

Leaving Pitawala

Leaving Pitawala is also straightforward.

There are two daily buses to Matale. One departs at 7.15 am and the other at around 2.15 pm.

Once in Matale, you will have to change to a Kandy-bound bus. This will be very easy and most people from your bus will be doing the same and will point you in the right direction. There are very regular Matale-Kandy buses.

The entire journey takes about 4 hours.

Accommodation before and after the hike

Cave Camping at Duwili Ella Waterfall while Trekking in the Knuckles.

To hike to Duwili Ella, you will need to spend a night before and after the trek in Pitawala. Lucky for you as this village is an incredibly special place and you might find yourself wanting to stay longer! It stole our hearts and had we not been so pressed for time, we would have easily spent a few days after the hike there.

Pitawala is a very small and remote village that does not see a lot of foreign tourists. As such, it’s the kind of place where a foreigner is still a novelty and you can expect to have kids racing after you and people asking for selfies. It’s as far off the beaten track in Sri Lanka as you can possibly get.

And not only that, it’s so damn beautiful. Surrounded by the Knuckles Mountain Range, with a view of the escarpment and lush green rice fields, it’s a magical place.

There are a number of guesthouses and homestays in and around Pitawala, however, only one, Crystal Riverston Deck , is on Booking .

If you search on Google, you will find a number of options on Google Maps. Otherwise, your best bet is to walk around the village when you arrive. You can also speak with your guide about lodging with them for a fee.

We arranged to stay in our guide’s house before and after our Knuckles Mountain Range hiking experience and his lovely wife prepared meals for us. It was an incredible experience and we really enjoyed it as it provided a more intimate travel experience.

How much does it cost to hike to Duwili Ella

It is very affordable to hike to Duwili Ella.

If you are self-sufficient, with all of your gear and food, you can expect to pay around 10,000 – 15,000 LKR for a guide for a 2-day / 1-night trip.  Considering this is the best hike in Sri Lanka, that’s a great deal.

You will also have to pay to enter the Knuckles Mountain Range reserve. Entrance to the reserve is 800 LKR per person.

Duwili Ella: The Hike

View of the Knuckles Mountain Range

The first 12 km of the Duwili Ella hike is through constantly undulating jungle until you reach the first waterfall, Dumbara Ella . Dumbara Ella is a powerful and very beautiful waterfall and makes a great spot for lunch.

You can swim at the rocks a few dozen metres from the waterfall.

After Dumbara Ella, the trail gets very difficult. It’s a 3 km straight ascent through very slippery and muddy jungle terrain. At times you have to scramble and hold on to tree roots.

Once you have gone 3 km, you reach the Knuckles infinity pool. This place is nothing short of magical. There are multiple spots to swim and places to camp and have a fire.

If you are doing a two-day option, this is a great spot to finish for the first day.

After the Knuckles infinity pool, it’s only 1 km to Dumbara Ella and the main campsite. This should take around 20 – 30 minutes.

The campsite is in a cave, behind the waterfall, overlooking the valley. The campsite is nice and sheltered and protected from rain and wind.

There’s also a smaller waterfall, with a bigger, more secure ledge. The waterfall is pretty small (just a few drops), but it’s a refreshing place to have a rinse-off.

Note: Be careful getting water. You get the water from the waterfall and if you slip, well, it’s a big fall.

Also, watch where you step on the way to get water. Some areas are used as a toilet and there are some traces around …

Where to Buy Supplies for Trekking in the Knuckles

If you are trekking in the Knuckles independently, then you will need to bring everything you will need for the hike with you from Kandy, including your food. There is a small store in Pitawala that stocks biscuits and soda, but not much else. It’s nice to buy something to support the store, but don’t rely on getting all your hiking food from it.

If you need to buy gear, Kandy has a number of camping stores that will sell basic gear. Camping Tent & Gear LK and CampZone Kandy are recommended options.

For cooking gas, only butane gas is found in Kandy (not the isobutane canisters used for hiking stoves). You can find butane gas in Camping Tent & Gear LK and CampZone Kandy, however, do be sure this will fit to your stove (without an adapter, it won’t fit on most European/North American/Australian hiking stoves).

If you need isobutane hiking gas, your best bet is stocking up in Colombo.

Duwili Ella Tips and tricks

  • You will need to prepare for the leeches. Wear two pairs of thick socks and tuck your pants into your socks. Make a Dettol spray: mix a small amount of Dettol in a spray bottle and spray your feet constantly. It actually works.
  • Drinking water is plentiful, so you do not need to pack all your water. Be sure to treat it. We used our Steripen , which we love and highly recommend.
  • Take cash. There is nothing even close to an ATM in the village. You will need to pay (and tip) your guide at the end, plus pay for your accommodation pre and post-hike. This just all be in cash.
  • As always, leave no trace.  For cleaning up after yourself, we use and recommend The Deuce Backpacking Potty Trowel .

It offers breathtaking views from the south of the mountain range. You can complete this trek as a circuit by coming down the other side of the mountain, making the entire trek nearly 6 kilometres. The trek begins at the Knuckles Conservation Centre in Deanston and a permit is needed to enter the area. You can get your permit at the Conservation Centre.

2. Nitro Caves

Another popular choice for hikers is the nature trail that leads to Nitro Caves, a massive cave inhabited by hundreds of bats. The 11-kilometre path starts at Corbett’s Gap and will take about five hours to complete. Corbett’s Gap is itself a noteworthy attraction, sitting at an elevation of 1,216 metres and offering spectacular panoramic views of the range.

3. Mini World’s End

Located towards the south of the mountains is Mini World’s End , a dramatic 1,192-metre cliff that offers sweeping views of the mountains. It begins at the Knuckles Conservation Centre (KCC) and is approximately 1.5 kilometres in length. Again, a permit is required.

I love hiking especially when there’s waterfalls so I would definitely want to do this when I visit Sri Lanka.

It’s one of our favourite things we did, plus we loved staying with our guide and his family before and after. It was a real cultural experience in addition to the adventure!

The waterfalls in Sri Lanka are nothing short of amazing! We hope you get the chance to do this hike on a visit.

I love everything about this. The humidity would kill me, but I like the challenge. Thank you for providing all the important details, especially the local guides information. It can be very frustrating when their is no information on the internet about amazing hikes. I wish I could have explored more when I visited . Oh well next time for sure!

You are so welcome and we are glad you enjoyed it. It’s a fantastic hike, and definitely has a few challenges, but it makes it that much more worthwhile. 🙂

Sri Lanka is still one of my favourite destinations of all time. I regret not getting the chance to hike when I was there, these are great suggestions, thank you. I’d also love to do Adam’s peak.

It’s a wonderful country. So glad you enjoyed the article!

This looks amazing although I am not sure if I would manage in the humidity! A great post and it sounds like it was a great idea to have a guide.

The humidity was definitely a killer!

Love this and learned a ton! Never would have really thought about such great hiking in Sri Lanka. Glad to know about it now!

So glad you liked it! The Knuckles aren’t very well known, but they offer fantastic hiking!

Great hike! Do you think it is possible with sportive boys of 14 and 12 years old? Where would you camp? Off course with a guide!

Definitely, in fact, if they like hiking, they’ll love it! Just make sure they’re prepared for those leeches.

Camping at Duwili Ella is the best – this is the waterfall at the top with the cave behind it. Your guide will know where it is.

Trekking In The Knuckles Mountain Range, Sri Lanka 2024

Trekking the Knuckles Mountain Range in Sri Lanka was one of the main highlights of our trip and one that certainly should not be missed by adventurers and nature lovers alike. It’s one of the best ways to escape the tourists and get out into Sri Lanka’s incredible countryside.

After booking our flights to Sri Lanka one of the first things we looked at was trekking options. We’re keen on getting away from crowded cities on our travels and like nothing more than finding those remote places that aren’t so accessible.

the knuckles range mountains in sri lanka on a sunny day

But researching treks in Sri Lanka wasn’t as easy as we had hoped.  There were the popular walks, Adam’s peak, Ella’s Rock, and Little Adam’s Peak (all of which are great-find out more here !) but we wanted something more off the beaten track.  A bit more of an adventure.

We could find very little information but settled on trekking in the Knuckles Mountain Range. It was a bit of a slog to plan, with no clear guides on who to book through, how to get there, or what options were available to tourists wanting to trek in the Knuckles Mountain Range.

We’ve put together an extensive guide in the hopes of making your trip a little easier to research!

What Is The Knuckles Mountain Range Famous For?

one of the 34 peaks of the knuckles mountain range in sri lanka

Set high in the Districts of Matale and Kandy, the Knuckles mountain range is famous for being one of the best places to trek in Sri Lanka. It is named after the peaks and folds that create a knuckle shape when viewed from certain angles. I couldn’t see it personally, but the guide was very excited about it so I played along!

The constantly changing cloud and mist cover make the Knuckles Mountain Range an incredible place to explore, with different views at every turn and a plethora of wildlife to spot.

You will not be disappointed by what this place has to offer. You can literally walk from eco-system to eco-system and there is such an obvious change in the landscape that you feel as though you could be on several completely different treks.

Why Trek The Knuckles Mountain Range?

The knuckles mountain range trek in sri lanka

The Knuckles Mountain Range is pretty unique. Sri Lanka has some wonderful trekking opportunities in some beautiful places, but in our opinion, none quite compared to the Knuckles Mountains.

The Knuckles Mountain Range is quite remote and takes a little planning to access. For this reason, it is much less popular than some of the more frequently visited UNESCO heritage sites but no less impressive!

You should consider trekking the Knuckles Mountain Range if you’re after something a little different from your trip and if you enjoy really escaping the crowds!

A map showing where the knuckles mountain range is compared to the rest of sri lanka

The favourite approach to the Knuckles Mountain Range ranges begins on the main motorway running east of Kandy to Hunnsgiriya.

At Hunnasiriya, another road leads to Corbett’s Gap. Make sure you keep your eyes out the window from now on, as the views get unreal! From Corbett’s Gap, you’ll then travel on the road that leads to the village of Meemure. The track here is a little bumpy!

It is not possible to do this trek without a guide, so make sure they know where to pick you up from before you start your trek and they will know all the local information on the best routes to take to get here!

Kandy gets pretty busy with traffic, so a guide will make sure you take the route that is quickest!

Where To Stay Before You Trek The Knuckles Mountain Range

KANDY LAKE IN SRI LANKA AT SUNSET

The Knuckles Mountain Range lies in central Sri Lanka.  There are various ways to access it, but the easiest and most convenient for the majority of travellers is to start in the city of Kandy.

You will want to book at least a night as you will need to leave very early in the morning for your trek. Here there are numerous  accommodation options, ranging from budget to luxurious. We’ve listed a few below, but for the best deals, it is definitely worth shopping around.

Guest Houses

If you want something a little more mainstream that doesn’t break the bank, then try one of the many guest houses. Freedom Lodge is located near the scenic Kandy lake but is tucked away from the bustle of the city streets. It is run by a lovely couple who speak English fluently.

Their 8 homely, but immaculately kept, rooms all come with basic necessities such as mosquito nets and fans and all come with their own modern, private bathrooms. There are two different garden areas for you to relax in and the guesthouse offers a simple but filling breakfast to start your day.

The  Kandy City Hotel  is affordable but offers a little more luxury than a homestay. It’s in a great location, being near to the central railway station and the city sights. The rooms come with all the essentials, and even boast air conditioning, WIFI, and a TV! You can eat in the restaurant here and they offer great advice about the surrounding area.

Book A Guide For The Knuckles Mountain Range Trek

a waterfall in the knuckles range mountains in sri lanka

We would have loved to go alone but, along with being strictly prohibited, after reading up on trekking in the Knuckles Mountain Range we decided the many uncharted paths, unpredictable weather and lack of decent maps of the area meant we would have had to take a guide anyway.

We booked with Sri Lanka Trekking and rate them very highly. They offered competitive prices and we had excellent contact with them from the moment we booked.

They provided us with all the information we needed well in advance so that we could be properly prepared for the trek. Your guide will sort out all your permits for you to make the entrance to the national park smoother and easier.

After a nasty accident when trekking in the Himalayas I now always encourage people to take guides on remote treks where possible. I get that it doesn’t feel quite so adventurous, and can cost quite a lot of money, but you’re paying for expertise that could save your life (I have first-hand experience of this!)

Guides also provide a wealth of knowledge. We would never have found the rare leaf-nosed lizard or spotted deer, or a rattlesnake. We got a lot more from our trip because of our passionate and experienced guide. You’re also helping out local businesses – responsible tourism at its finest!

Prices For Hiking In The Knuckles Mountain Range

Transport, accommodation at the campsite, all meals from first-day lunch to last-day lunch (including a homemade meal at a local village), entrance tickets to the Knuckles Mountain Range, the fees for a professional guide for the whole trip, and the chef that cooked the evening meal, all drinking water.

Top tip: Make sure you tell your guide exactly what you want from your trip before you go. If the focus of your trip is to see the wonderful nature that exists on the mountain, they will be able to recommend the best route and guide for you.

If you want adventure, or something a little easier, just let them know. Also, keep in mind that they know these mountains a lot better than you. The weather will dictate your trip and the guides know which views will be completely hidden in the clouds, or which animals will be out with the sun!

The Knuckles Mountain Range is pretty remote as we’ve previously said, so don’t expect fancy hotels here. If you book with a tour guide then they will suggest an accommodation, which usually consists of mountain bungalows or huts. They’re far from luxurious but they are an incredible experience, and we’d highly recommend you give them a go for at least one night of your trek!

The closest you’ll get to hotels in the Knuckles Mountains themselves would be to stay in the pretty little village of Meemure.

The accommodation here is more like a simple homestay than a hotel, but it’s a unique place to stay and you’ll have the best surroundings!

If you won’t settle for less than luxury then try Rangala house . It’s situated on the borders of the Knuckles Mountain Range and is a magnificent place to stay while you visit the area.

WATERFALLS AT THE KNUCKLES MOUNTAIN RANGE

Nitro Caves In The Knuckles Mountain Range

Nitro caves is a massive cave in the Knuckles Mountain Range that’s inhabited by thousands of bats. But this isn’t the only part of the trek that will take your breath away.

With some of the trek being at an elevation of 1216 metres, you will take in incredible views of the mountain range. The 11-kilometre path starts at Corbett’s Gap and will take about five hours to complete.

Mini World’s End

This dramatic 1,192-metre cliff offers panoramic views of the mountains. The trek begins at the Knuckles Conservation Centre (KCC) and is about 1.5 kilometres in length.

This trek is shorter than some of the other treks around the Knuckles Mountain Range but it’s still stunning, and you can always ask your guide to extend the walk to take in some other incredible sights along the way.

Top Tip : If you want to see the real World’s End then we can thoroughly recommend a trip to the famous Horton Plains National Park .

Dothalugala Nature Trail In The Knuckles Mountain Range

The Dothalugala nature trail in The Knuckles Mountain Range is (no surprises here!), up the Dothalugala Mountain.

It offers breathtaking views from the south of the mountain range. You can complete this trek as a circuit by coming down the other side of the mountain, making the entire trek nearly 6 kilometres. The trek begins at the Knuckles Conservation Centre in Deanston and your guide will sort out your permit for you.

Duwili Ella trail

The Duwaili Ella trail leads to a 40m waterfall hidden in the forests of The Knuckles Mountain Range. It’s the cave behind this waterfall that makes it worth the walk, as it means you can sneak behind the waterfall. It’s a pretty cool experience but check with your guide before you head there to make sure there will be water running when you arrive.

The Cloud Forests Of The Knuckles Mountain Range

Make sure your guide takes you to the cloud forest on your trek in the Knuckles Mountain Range. The cloud forest is a very unique eco-region.

It can only be found above 1000m in the central highlands of Sri Lanka and is considered a hot spot for endemic flora and fauna. It’s in places like this that having a knowledgeable guide really comes in handy, as they can point out all the things you’d miss if you were alone.

Because of the high humidity here, the cloud forest is evergreen and the only home in the world to more than 20 endangered species.  You have a good chance of spotting the deer that live here.

These treks in The Knuckles Mountain Range can be completed in a day, but we recommend you spend a night there for reasons explained below! This way you’ll also get to see more than one of these amazing parts of the Knuckles Mountain Range, and have a pretty unique experience under the stars as well.

A Huge cloud over a mountain, seen while trekking in the knuckles mountain range

You’ll be starting the trek early, so get a good night’s sleep! Our guide was prompt and very friendly.  He took us to a local café and insisted on buying us a coffee before we set off on about an hour’s drive to reach the start of our trek.

Day 1 Of The Knuckles Mountain Trek

The beginning of the trek led us through beautiful green woodland covered in butterflies.  Our guide knew the name of every tree, flower, and insect but his particular passion was birds and he was extremely excited when I bought out a pair of cheap binoculars.

This is a huge benefit of having a trained local guide, there is so much we would have missed without his knowledge.

One of my favourite parts of the trek early on led us through a tiny collection of houses amongst fields and fields of rice paddies.  We had lunch provided by the company and ate next to a waterfall, resting our feet in the cool water.

If you don’t like spice then bring your own food, most of my lunch was fed to the hungry fishes!

After lunch we walked through the smallest village I have ever seen, and watched the children playing beside the rice paddies and the villagers at work in the fields. It was a snapshot view into a completely different way of life.

We spotted a rattlesnake in the long grass, a countless array of lizards, and numerous colourful birds (that to be honest all looked the same to us but apparently were very different!)

Over Night Accommodation

A girl sitting beside her tent in the sky camp accommodation of the knuckles mountain range

Sky camp was a line of metal-roofed huts with tents set up in each. We had the whole camp to ourselves which was quite magical.  The view was spectacular – get up for sunrise and you won’t be disappointed!

There were clean showers, cups of tea, and a delicious cooked dinner. If you’re not completed exhausted there is more stunning scenery a short walk from the camp that you can explore on your own.

We did a short walk through tea plantations and took it slow, taking in the incredible views as the sun was setting.  We fell asleep, exhausted, to the sound of crickets.

Day 2 Of The Knuckles Mountain Range Trek

Mountains under a layer of thunder storm clouds

The next day was slightly more strenuous as we climbed to the top of one of the peaks.  We were greeted with stunning views, even through the clouds.

The walk through a ‘cloud forest’ provided a completely different scene again and we spotted barking deer and leaf-nosed lizards found only in a certain small area in the mountains.

Lunch was provided by a family from a village we trekked through.  There was a wide choice of food and we were welcomed cheerfully into their house and made to feel at home. It was a great opportunity to see local village life and tourists obviously provide good business to these people who have made their home high up in the mountains.

We were disappointed that the second day wasn’t a bit longer (we were picked up at about 2 pm) but even the drive back to civilisation was incredible (and a little terrifying, if you’re anything like me you’ll spend the whole way down gripping your seat belt).

  • Leave as much luggage as possible at your homestay/hotel!  If you can’t leave them let the trekking company know and they can store them in the vehicle.
  • Bring water for your first day.  We were asked on the way there how much we would drink on the second day and our guide bought supplies for us which were dropped off at camp.
  • Bring a small bottle of Dettol.  We were confused about where to get this but it turns out most small convenient stores in Kandy sell them.  There are LOTS of leeches and the Dettol really worked, though we weren’t sure about it’s effects on the environment.  If you’re more prepared than us and you read up on it and decide it’s a bad idea, I’ve had luck with salt pouches before which could be easily made with a rag and some salt from a restaurant.  We didn’t get a single bite (and they really are everywhere!)
  • Wear decent walking shoes that are covered-protect yourself from those leeches!
  • Bring sun cream and something light to cover up. Lots of the trek is in the shade but there are large sections that aren’t, and you won’t find any relief from the boiling hot sun.
  • Take cash. There is a small village store along the way. Try to buy something here to support the locals. You will need to pay (and tip) your guide at the end, though if you’re not happy to carry around large amounts of money then the driver will stop at a cash point on the drive home.

Views of all the tree covered mountains in the knuckles mountain range in sri lanka

If you’re heading off on a multi-day trek in the Knuckles mountain range then you’ll want to spend a little time thinking carefully about what to pack.

There are certain things you’re going to be really thankful you bought, and other things you’ll wish you left behind. Extra weight can really add up when you’re trekking for more than one day. Here’s our handy packing list for your trek.

  • Filter water bottle – there are lots of streams along the way
  • Dettol or salt pouch
  • Light cover up to double as sun protection and evening layer
  • Spare socks
  • Extra underwear
  • Camera – we have a comprehensive guide to choosing the best camera for blogging
  • Silk liner (check with a guide about available bedding at your overnight accommodation, but I always take a silk liner when I travel to sleep in bedding that’s my own!)

Gear We Couldn’t Have Done Without

Walking shoes.

I have to admit, I have some Mammut walking boots that were pretty expensive (compared to most of my clothes!), but they have lasted me YEARS and they are hands down the best shoes I have ever owned. They are comfortable, waterproof, and don’t look too bad either!

Adam, on the other hand, bought some cheap walking boots from Amazon and wore them around the whole of Sri Lanka. They won’t last too much longer but they did the job!

Lightweight Backpack

Essential really. We both took 40l rucksacks and they were plenty big enough for one night, though it may be worth investing in a slightly bigger one if you plan on doing any longer treks in the near future (just remember not to fill it for an overnight trek!)

You can go budget with something like this , or splash out on a high-quality rucksack that should last a lifetime. We would recommend getting the right gender-better designs are made to suit either men’s or women’s body shapes so they should be a more comfortable fit!

Adam uses a Sony ILCE7KB.CE Full Frame Compact with a 28mm lens to take the amazing shots we get for the website. We also love the video quality of this camera. It is well worth the money!

If you aren’t such a keen photographer, but like something that you can have a play with when you feel in the mood, then I can thoroughly recommend the Olympus OM-D . It’s small and light, so I can take it anywhere. I have the option to change lenses (I love my zoom lens for wildlife shots), but it also works great as a point-and-shoot.

A girl looking at the sunset over kandy lake in sri lanka

If you have time then it may be worth booking a few days here before or after your trek so that you have time to explore the area.

If you only have an evening to spare before your trek then make sure you visit the lake in the centre at sunset. It is truly stunning with the water turning pink and orange and huge bats flying over the water to nest in surrounding trees.  There was a really pleasant feel to the city and there’s so much to do in the surrounding areas.

If you’ve got more time to spare then we’ve put together a comprehensive lost of the most beautiful places in Kandy to help you get the most out of your stay. There really is so much to do in this vibrant city, so try to leave a little time before or after your trek to get the most out of your stay here.

On the website of the guide you shared the price is 240 dollars per person. Do you think they increased the price? Or is the price listed on their website incorrect?
