MELLING, Antoine Ignace. Voyage pittoresque de Constantinople et des rives du Bosphore, Paris, Treuttel et Würtz, MDCCCXIX [=1819].
Antoine Ignace Melling (1763-1831) was a French painter and architect, son of a sculptor. He studied architecture and mathematics and travelled to Italy and Egypt. In 1784, Melling moved to Istanbul as attaché to the Russian Embassy and lived in that city for eighteen years. He was architect to Sultan Selim III and his sister Hatice, with whom he maintained a close relationship. Melling designed the gardens and the interior of Hatice Sultan's palace in Ortaköy, and the interior of the newly built palace in Defterdar Burnu, in neoclassical style, as well as jewellery and clothes. Melling's long-term stay in the Ottoman capital allowed him to experience the life of the Cort, and to draw views of Bosporus and its surroundings, as well as scenes from Ottoman society, in an impressive style. He returned to Paris in 1803, published his marvellour work and was appointed lanscape painter to emperess Josephine, Napoleon's wife. In 1812 Melling travelled to Holland; during his journey he produced a multitude of drawings and wrote many letters to his family. He later travelled to France, Britain and the Pyrenees. In order to prepare the publication of his drawings, Melling set up an engraving studio, with the assistance of the best engravers of the time. The excellent quality of this edition, in select paper, realized by the best typographers of the time was achieved thanks to Melling's diligence, an impeccable engraving and the originality of the drawings. In order to write the accompanying texts Melling worked and consulted with Lechevalier, P. Deval, Pouquevile, Lacretelle, Choiseul-Gouffier, Barbie de Bocage and others. The locations from which the landscapes were drawn are shown on the map. Later on, coloured versions of the engravings were also published. The Ottoman capital, its natural landscape as well as monuments and everyday way unfolded before the eyes of Europeans in an unparallelled way. As has been recently said, Melling saw Istanbul as an Ottoman citizen but was able to paint it as an insightful Western European. Written by Ioli Vingopoulou

(worn, hinges & upper front joint cracked, some light foxing, few short marginal tears to first 2 leaves, former owner's small rubberstamp on title). Second Edition. The Voyage Pittoresque was the result of the German painter Melling's travels in the Pyrenees region in 1821 and is illustrated with a fine series of aquatints based on his original sepia watercolours, depicting picturesque views of the mountains, waterfalls, villages, grottoes, thermal baths, monuments, villages, chateaux, &c. Melling's intention was to demonstrate that the beauty of the Pyrenees rivalled that of the Swiss and Italian Alps. The first edition, published by Treuttel and Wurtz in 1826-30, contained seventy-two plates, a portrait, and a map, while the present edition is complete with sixty-six plates. cfBrunet III 1591-92. cfGraesse IV 473.

670 x 508 mm. (26 3/8 x 20"). 3 p.l., 10 pp., [63] leaves. Publisher's scarlet morocco by Buchbinderei Burkhardt AG, covers with gilt-rolled border, cornerpieces tooled in gilt, upper cover with gilt calligraphic Arabic centerpiece, lower cover with gilt central heraldic device, marbled endleaves, all edges gilt. With a portrait frontispiece of Emperor Selim III, 48 DOUBLE-PAGE PLATES, AND THREE DOUBLE-PAGE MAPS. A virtually as-new copy. This is one of the deluxe copies of a modern facsimile of Melling's massive and magnificently illustrated work devoted to 18th century Constantinople, a book that provided the earliest interior views and plans of the harems and palaces of Sultan Selim III when it was published in 1819. The illustrations remain the best (and certainly most attractive) record we have of the city during this era in its history. Our edition was produced from a copy of the elephant folio first printing in the collection of the facsimile's publisher, Ahmet Ertug, with images faithfully reproduced in their original mammoth size (650 x 970 mm.). After his arrival in Constantinople in 1795, architect and painter Antoine Ignace Melling (1763-1831) was appointed imperial architect by Selim III. In the course of his duties, he designed and landscaped a seaside palace for Selim's sister, Princess Hatice, and produced these striking panoramic views of the city and its environs. After completing the palace and a number of other building projects for Selim, he returned to Paris and in 1804 issued a prospectus for this work. He established an engraving studio in 1809 to reproduce these drawings and began publishing the completed prints as a series of fascicles that were sent to subscribers. The last one appeared in 1819. The outstanding success of an exhibition of the paintings on which the "Voyage Pittoresque" was based earned Melling the rank of painter to the Empress Josephine. When "Voyage Pittoresque" was originally published, booksellers in England sold copies for 84, a huge sum for a book at the time. The original edition in pleasing condition now fetches between $75,000 and $100,000. Our handsomely bound, actual size facsimile offers an attractively priced alternative. No. 46 OF 50 SPECIALLY BOUND COPIES (of a total edition of 350).

Oblong folio (415 x 580mm). Lithographic portrait frontispiece of Melling, dated 1830, map of the region by Tardieu, 72 aquatint plates, each with publishers blindstamps at lower right corners. Later morocco backed marbled boards. Condition: text lightly spotted, some margins of plates spotted, a few repaired tears to margins. A scarce work by Melling based on his travels in the Pyrenean region. Melling had an interesting life; he was born in Karlsruhe in 1763 and moved soon after to Alsace. At 19 he went to Italy, Egypt and Constantinople . and following his work for the sister of Selim III, he became, for the next 18 years, Imperial Architect to the Ottoman Court. He returned to Paris in 1803 and with the help of Talleyrand was appointed landscape painter to Empress Josephine. In 1821 he was sent by the French government to document the Pyrenees and the 72 fine aquatint views in this work are based on the watercolors that he executed on his travels. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.
