Mountain of Youth

There is something in the water, in the mountains, and in the air. That something is Jackson Hole.

There's plenty to explore any season in Jackson Hole.

A snow-filled landscape offers both wild and cozy experiences for everyone. Along with world-class skiing and snowboarding, you can discover snowmobiling, sleigh rides, hot springs, fireside moments, and so much more.

As the snow melts and the Tetons defrost, the Jackson Hole valley comes alive with signs of life: rivers swell with snow runoff, fields and trees burst into green, and wildlife comes out of hibernation with their young.

Find your perfect adventure hiking, biking, climbing, and fishing or sit back and take in wild mountain, river, and wildlife views. No matter how you choose to spend your summer days in the Tetons, you’ll be connecting to the wild like you never have before.

As the leaves change and mountain peaks get dusted with snow, scenic drives, bike rides, and hikes can offer the area’s most beautiful views of the year. Jackson and the national parks slow down a bit as summer winds down and wildlife begin preparation for winter.

What is the difference between jackson and jackson hole.

Jackson Hole refers to the 42-mile long valley between the Teton and Gros Ventre mountains. Trappers and mountain men used “hole” to describe high mountain valleys. Within Jackson Hole are the towns of Jackson, Teton Village, Kelly, Wilson, Moran, Moose, and Hoback Junction and also Grand Teton National Park. Jackson, population approximately 10,000, is the largest town in Jackson Hole.

When should I visit?

With an authentic, spirited, and distinctive Western mountain character, Jackson Hole is a popular year-round tourist destination. More than 2.6 million people visit the valley annually. Truly, anytime is a good time to visit Jackson Hole. Every season has its own personality. The most popular season is summer. Most summer visitors come for Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks. Grand Teton National Park is in Jackson Hole, and Yellowstone is just north of the valley. Between them, these parks receive upwards of 3 million visitors every year.

According to U.S. News & World Report Travel, the best months to visit Jackson Hole are April, May, September, and October. The magazine picked these months, which are Jackson Hole’s two shoulders seasons, because travelers seeking a value can find lower rates and also restaurant specials then. Also, coming during either shoulder season means there will be fewer tourists.

What area should I stay in?

Most lodging options are concentrated in the Town of Jackson and Teton Village. If you’re planning to spend most of your time at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, stay in Teton Village to minimize your driving time. If you’re looking to explore more of the valley, including the nearby national parks, stay in the town of Jackson.

The closer you are to the Town Square, the greater the number of restaurants and shops within walking distance. From the Town Square, Teton Village and the southern entrance to Grand Teton National Park are almost equidistant: about a 20-minute drive. Of course, staying in Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks is also an option; both have developed campgrounds, historic lodges, and modern hotels.

What should I pack?

Make sure to pack appropriately for the weather, since Jackson Hole experiences cold temperatures and snow during the winter months. Jackson Hole lies at 6,237 feet (1,901 meters) above sea level and is surrounded by mountains. The valley can experience all four seasons in a single day, even in the summer months, so it’s best to be prepared for any type of inclement weather.

Packing by Season

What is slow travel?

It’s the best way to experience Jackson Hole! Slow travel is a mindful approach to traveling that emphasizes taking the time to fully experience and appreciate a destination rather than rushing through it in a short amount of time. It often involves using more sustainable modes of transportation, staying in locally owned accommodations, and engaging in authentic cultural experiences.

Slow travel can also help reduce the impact of tourism on local communities and the environment by supporting local businesses and reducing carbon emissions. It allows travelers to connect with the places they visit on a deeper level and gain a greater understanding of and appreciation for their cultures and histories. If you don’t know, go slow!

Can I visit national parks in the off season?

Yes, both Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks are open year-round, though access to certain areas and roads changes by season. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting during the spring or fall, when the weather is cooler and the crowds are thinner. During these months, you can enjoy hiking, wildlife watching, and scenic drives while also avoiding the peak tourist season. Winter is a unique and magical time with plenty to do besides downhill skiing.

No matter when you visit, be sure to plan for any kind of weather conditions. As Jackson old-timers will tell you, they’ve seen snow flurries every month of the year! Many of the national parks’ roads and facilities are closed due to snow and ice from late October to sometime in May, so it’s important to check the Wyoming road report, look up Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks’ current conditions, have good tires no matter the time of year, and plan accordingly.

Are dinner reservations required?

At fine dining restaurants, reservations are always recommended. Between June and early October and December through March they’re absolutely necessary. To make sure you get the seating time of your choice, we recommend making reservations as far in advance as possible. Some restaurants take reservations up to 90 days in advance. During quieter times of year — mid-October through early December and April through early May — it’s possible to make reservations as late as a day or two ahead of time.

21 Best Things to Do in Jackson Hole — Including National Parks, Hot Springs, and Cowboy Bars

The Wyoming mountain town has a real Old West feel.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

jackson hole wyoming tourism

There are plenty of beautiful mountain towns in the West, but Jackson Hole has long stood out. The Wyoming town sits in a mountain valley surrounded by jutting peaks and open wildlands. It's home to animals like moose, elk, and bears, in addition to real-life cowboys and cowgirls who frequent many of the stops on this list.

In Jackson, you can start the day deep in the wilderness, surrounded by nature, and end it at a cowboy-themed bar filled with locals and live music. This blend of nature and culture is part of what makes Jackson Hole such a special place.

Here are 21 of the best things to do in Jackson Hole.

Snow King Mountain Resort

Snow King Mountain Resort isn't Jackson's biggest, but it's the most accessible. The summer playground and winter ski hill is right in town, providing easy access to the mountain sports locals love. During the summer, you can bike, ride the gondola, or zip down the mountain in a coaster, while in the winter, the slopes are reserved for skiers and snowboarders who come to take in the views before making their descent.

Grand Teton National Park

Irjaliina Paavonera/Travel + Leisure

Part of what makes Jackson Hole so special is its direct access to some of the nation's best national parks . Grand Teton National Park , home to the magnificent Teton Range, sits just north of the city. Within the park, you'll find beautiful alpine lakes, hundreds of miles of trails, and plentiful wildlife, including bears, moose, and elk.

Astoria Hot Springs

Situated on the bank of the Snake River just 20 minutes south of Jackson is a source of natural thermal water that's funneled into a series of natural hot spring pools. Soaking in the mineral-rich waters of Astoria Hot Springs is a Jackson Hole must — especially since entry fees support the Astoria Park Conservancy, which protects the area's natural resources and provides community programming.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

In the winter, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort draws some of the world's best skiers and boarders. But in reality, the "extreme" mountain, which is home to the iconic Corbet's Couloir, has a little something for everyone — even total beginners. In the summer , ski runs transform into hiking and biking trails, and long days leave plenty of time for alfresco dining and enjoying the mountain's ropes course.

Persephone Bakery

It's almost impossible to express the deliciousness that awaits at Persephone . Jackson Hole's most beloved bakery, which now has three locations, is a must if you enjoy French-inspired food — from wonderfully light croissants to hearty quiches. We suggest swinging by their cafe near the Town Square and eating your way through the menu.

Town Square

It may be cliché, but did you really experience Jackson if you didn't walk through the Town Square and get your photo taken under the iconic antler arches? Fun fact: The eye-catching arches were made by hand using an estimated 2,000 elk antlers shed on the nearby National Elk Refuge.

Darwin Ranch

If Jackson Hole is a bit too much for you, make your way east to the remote Darwin Ranch . This spot is known for its quiet, wild setting (it butts up against the Gros Ventre Wilderness), as well as its exceptional food and dude ranch experiences . At Darwin, you can spend the day fishing in Snake River, riding horses, and sitting by an open fire, cocktail in hand.

Jackson Hole Rodeo

In the summer, no trip to Jackson is complete without a night under the stars at the Jackson Hole Rodeo . Every year, the outdoor arena welcomes ropers and bronco riders who come to put on a show for a stadium full of fans. Not into rodeo? Come for the food (and beer).

Bar T 5 Wagon Cookout

For a true — and literal — taste of the Old West, head to the Double H Bar. Their renowned Bar T 5 cookout includes a ride in a horse-drawn covered wagon and a three-hour dinner and show in the stunning Cache Creek Canyon outside town.

Million Dollar Cowboy Bar

Set right off the Town Square, the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar sits under a neon cowboy on a bucking bronco. Inside, the Wild West theme continues with saddle-topped bar seats and rustic cowboy decor. It's the best place in Jackson to, quite literally, saddle up to the bar and enjoy live music.

Stagecoach Bar

Just a few miles west of Jackson Hole at the base of Teton Pass lies a bar that has been a local favorite since 1942. The historic Stagecoach Bar — known simply as "the Coach" by locals — is the place to go for a drink, affordable eats, and the chance to rub elbows with loyal local clientele.

Jackson Hole Winery

As you might imagine, making a good bottle of wine at 6,000-plus feet can be challenging. But after years of experimenting, the folks at Jackson Hole Winery have it nailed. In addition to serving up glass after glass of their pinot noir and viognier, the winery sits at the base of the Teton Range, providing some of the best views you'll ever get from a winery.

One of the most popular destinations within Grand Teton National Park is Jenny Lake — and for good reason. The beautiful lake is often thought of as the park's centerpiece. It's easily accessible, and from the eastern shore, you'll get stunning views of Teewinot Mountain and Mount Saint John.

Yellowstone National Park

The nation's first national park is also one of the most popular — and it just so happens to sit directly north of Jackson Hole. Yellowstone National Park , which turned 150 in 2022, is known for its plentiful geysers (including Old Faithful) and wildlife, including grizzly bears.

National Elk Refuge

Arguably the best place in the world to watch elk is National Elk Refuge , which is adjacent to the city of Jackson Hole. The refuge's resident elk herd roams the almost 25,000 acres of grasslands, forest, and wetlands that have been protected for them. In addition to viewing the animals from lookout points along the road, you can take a tour onto the refuge for an up-close look.

Snake River Brewing

Every good mountain town has a team of brewers crafting locally inspired beer. And the offerings in Jackson don't disappoint, particularly the brews coming out of Snake River Brewing , which has been in operation since 1994. This little haven sits right off the Town Square and serves up a handful of award-winning beers complemented by refined comfort food.

Jackson Hole Playhouse

When you step into the Jackson Hole Playhouse , you enter a completely different world. The rustic performing arts theater offers a stellar dinner and a show, both with an Old West feel. It's a must, especially if it's your first time in Jackson Hole.

Whitewater Rafting

Just west of town, Snake River winds its way along the base of the Tetons. One of the best ways to see the valley — and get a close look at wildlife like moose, elk, and eagles — is by booking a rafting trip with one of the city's many vendors .

National Museum of Wildlife Art

The National Museum of Wildlife Art is the only museum in the country that's dedicated solely to wildlife art — and it's fitting that it's found just outside Jackson, near the famed National Elk Refuge. At the museum, you'll see works by artists like Georgia O'Keeffe and Andy Warhol alongside local pieces.

Aerial Tram

There's nothing quite like the magic of hopping in a gondola car and being swept up a mountain in a mere 12 minutes. Along the way, you'll climb more than 4,000 vertical feet and enjoy staggering views of the Tetons and Jackson Hole valley. Even better, you'll be greeted at the top by warm, gourmet waffles — with everything from Nutella to peanut butter and bacon — from the team at Corbet's Cabin .

Dog Sledding

One of the most unique things you can do in Jackson Hole in the winter is go dog sledding . There's nothing quite like being pulled by a team of highly trained dogs through some of Wyoming's most stunning landscapes. To up the ante, you can even book a tour that ends with a soak at a natural hot spring.

Grand Teton National Park

Spanning more than 310,000 acres, Grand Teton National Park is one of the most beautiful mountain wilderness areas in the world. Tourists arriving in Jackson Hole for the first time often gape in awe at the jagged peaks of the park's towering Teton Mountain Range ( Grand Teton is the highest peak at more than 13,770 feet.)

If you arrive into the valley on a commercial flight, you'll actually land in Grand Teton National Park at Jackson Hole airport — one of the few airports in the world within the borders of a national park .

Nature lovers and photographers will be in heaven here. Among the diversity of flora and fauna are more than 900 species of flowering plants; 300 species of birds; and 60 species of mammals including moose, black bears, and grizzly bears.

A great place to begin a tour of the park is the Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center in Moose, which provides an excellent overview of the park's ecology. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Teton Village

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is frequently voted the number one ski resort in North America, and for good reason. Known as the birthplace of extreme skiing , it's legendary among powder hounds for its long runs and challenging in-bounds and backcountry terrain. But don't worry, beginners and intermediate skiers will find plenty of suitable terrain, too.

In the winter, skiers and snowboarders can carve up more than 2,500 acres of ski trails on two mountains. Expert skiers can take the plunge into the spine-tingling Corbet's Couloir, a steep and narrow chute with a 10- to 20-foot drop-in (depending on snow conditions) from the cornice above.

But the fun doesn't stop when the snow melts. In summer, you can ride the 100-person Jackson Hole Aerial Tram to 10,450 feet for incredible views and high alpine hiking trails, or hop aboard the high-speed gondola and enjoy a meal with panoramic views over the entire valley.

Other fun things to do in Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in summer include mountain biking , hiking, frisbee golf, and a ropes course catering to climbers of all abilities.

Teton Village , at the base of the ski mountains, offers excellent resort amenities. Here, you'll find shops selling outdoor gear and clothing, as well as popular Jackson Hole restaurants and hotels. The free summer concert series staged here is a hit with locals and tourists alike.

Elk Antler Arch, Jackson Town Square

Cowboys, cowgirls, and cashed-up globetrotters feel equally at home in the funky Old West town of Jackson. Sitting at the south end of the valley at an elevation of 6,237 feet, the town is a popular jumping-off point for visiting Yellowstone National Park, a mere one-hour drive away, and the rugged mountain wilderness of Grand Teton National Park .

A great place to start a sightseeing tour of popular Jackson attractions is the Town Square. Tourists love to snap photos here standing under the famous elk antler arches , or gliding around the tiny ice-skating rink.

From the square, you can enjoy an Old-West-style horse and carriage ride around town, or stroll along the boardwalks lined with boutiques and art galleries. If you love wilderness and landscape photography, don't miss the Images of Nature by Thomas Mangelsen gallery. It's a great place to get a dose of inspiration.

Downtown is also the place to come for shopping in Jackson Hole, from gem shops to Lee's Tees with an array of Jackson Hole T-shirts. You'll also find some of the best places to eat in Jackson Hole sprinkled around town.

If you're looking for more exciting things to do in downtown Jackson, how about a taste of the Wild Wild West? During summer, the town square hosts Jackson Hole Shootout demonstrations with talented actors, Monday through Saturday from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Also nearby, Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum is a great place to visit to learn more about the area's history. It features exhibits on Jackson Hole, Grand Teton National Park, and Yellowstone National Park, as well as the Indigenous people of the region.

Snow King Mountain

A five-minute drive from the town square in Jackson, Snow King Mountain is the steepest north-facing FIS (International Ski Federation) racing course in the continental US . This beautiful pine-cloaked mountain rises above the streets of Jackson on the south edge of town, and its summit sits at 7,808 feet.

Established in 1938, the mountain was the valley's first ski resort. Today, it offers an affordable ski or snowboarding experience for those who don't mind the relatively limited terrain. In winter, skiers and snowboarders can access 400 acres of trails, serviced by three lifts. One of the lifts provides access to five beginner trails and six intermediate trails, complementing the steep and often icy expert terrain. Night skiing is also offered, and kids will love the tubing course at the base.

Not a skier or snowboarder? No problem. Hop aboard the Cowboy Coaster , an exhilarating, almost-mile-long mountain roller coaster, which is open year-round — even in winter.

Summer brings even more fun. This is when the mountain hosts horseback rides and the valley's only alpine slide, as well as North America's steepest zipline .

Feel like more of a workout? Test your stamina on the steep hiking and mountain biking trails. Mini-golf and a treetop ropes course add to all the adventure, and at the base of Snow King, the climbing walls and children's playground are a hit with the little ones in the warmer months.

Another highlight at Snow King is the stunning view from the summit . From here, you can see right across the valley of Jackson and the Elk Refuge to the snowcapped Tetons in the distance. The hike up to the summit is one of Jackson Hole's top hiking trails and a popular lunchtime workout for locals.

Not up for the hike? Hop aboard the mountain's brand new gondola, and zoom to the summit in five minutes.

The Snake River

An exciting way to explore the Jackson Hole wilderness from a different perspective is a rafting trip on the Snake River. This famous waterway slithers through the valley from its headwaters in Yellowstone National Park.

Several outfitters offer two different styles of trips: a relaxing scenic float trip through Grand Teton National Park (or the South Park section of the river), and an adrenaline-infused white water trip on Class III rapids. Both offer the chance to admire stunning scenery, including steep limestone canyons, the craggy peaks of the Teton Mountain Range, and thick pine forests.

Along the way, you might spot some of the local wildlife such as deer, bald eagles, osprey, moose, marmots, and beavers.

The Snake River is also one of Wyoming's top fly fishing destinations . If you're looking for things to do in April and May in Jackson Hole, it's one of the best times of year to fly fish, as long as you time it before the runoff. Guided fly fishing float trips can be arranged in season.

Hiker on the Phelps Lake Trail Loop in the Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve

Part of Grand Teton National Park, but administered by the Rockefeller Foundation, the Laurance Rockefeller Preserve offers a one-stop immersive wilderness experience. In 2001, Laurance S. Rockefeller followed in his father John D. Rockefeller's footsteps and donated 1,106 acres of private ranchland to the National Park Service. Today, it is one of the jewels of the park. If you can only make one quick visit to the park, make it here.

Your first stop should be the excellent visitor center. Awarded a Platinum Leed Certification, the unassuming building sits in a serene sagebrush meadow and houses a series of sensory experiences. Sunlight streams through the large windows, poetry peppers the walls, large screens display images of the park's passing seasons, and a soundscape with recordings from the park offers a peaceful space for meditation.

Phelps Lake

After you've explored the visitor center, head out for a hike. Some of Grand Teton National Park's best hiking trails radiate from here. Of the 16 miles of trails, the Phelps Lake Trail Loop is one of the most popular. Make sure you pack bear spray, though — hikers frequently spot black bears on this trail. Before you head out into the wilderness, you can chat to rangers at the center about recent sightings, and organize guided walks.

Insider's tip: The parking lot fills up quickly, so it's best to time your visit for early in the day.

Jackson Hole Rodeo

A trip to the wild west town of Jackson wouldn't be complete without seeing the famous Jackson Hole Rodeo. Barrel-racing, bull-riding, bareback bronc-riding, and calf-roping are just some of the exciting activities on the lineup here, and even the local little tykes participate with nail-biting bareback rides.

The rodeo is held twice weekly during summer with extra performances during peak visitor times.

Another popular event held at the Rodeo Grounds, usually in July, is the Teton County Fair with fun games, farm animals, and dizzying rides.

A word of warning: Animal lovers might find some of the events, such as the calf roping, disturbing.

National Museum of Wildlife Art

Overlooking the Elk Refuge , the National Museum of Wildlife Art is worth visiting as much to admire the building's environmentally sensitive design as for what's inside. Composed of natural stone, the building blends beautifully with a rocky hillside, and the art exhibits begin before you even enter the building on the Sculpture Trail, with life-size wildlife sculptures.

Inside, the museum's superb collection of wildlife art ranges from 2500 BCE to the present day, with a focus on European and American painting and sculpture. The more than 5,000 artworks span a variety of genres and media, from Romanticism to Realism and lithography to photography. Impressive temporary exhibitions complement the permanent collection.

After gazing at all the wildlife art, visitors can admire real wildlife on the Elk Refuge through the museum's spotting scope. The museum is also home to an excellent restaurant, Palate.

Address: 2820 Rungius Road, 6825, Jackson, Wyoming

National Elk Refuge

Famous for being the largest concentration of wintering elk in the world , the National Elk Refuge is home to herds of more than 5,000 animals.

In winter, horse-drawn sleighs take visitors out across the glittering snowscape for close-up views of these gentle creatures, and accompanying guides provide a narrative history of the refuge. The sleigh rides depart from the Jackson Hole and Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center, which presents excellent exhibits on the history of the refuge and local wildlife. Looking for some private couple time in the winter? Private sleigh rides can be reserved and are one of the most romantic things to do in Jackson Hole.

The National Elk Refuge is also home to a bison herd of more than 500 animals, and you might also spot coyotes, bighorn sheep, and trumpeter swans.

From May through September, you can tour the historic Miller Ranch on the refuge to hear fascinating stories about the valley's original homesteaders and the region's rich history.

Address: 675 East Broadway, Jackson, Wyoming

Mormon Row with the Tetons in the background

Wondering where to get one of the best photos of Jackson Hole? Take a scenic drive to Antelope Flats. It's about an hour's drive from town, but the scenery en route will make the time melt away.

Get your cameras ready. Along this drive, you'll see spectacular views of the Gros Ventre Mountains and the Teton Range, as well as the delightfully rustic homesteads of the Mormon Row Historic District. You might recognize them from Jackson Hole tourist brochures.

Wildlife sightings are also common. This 640-acre tract of wilderness preserves important habitats and migration routes. Among the many animals you can see here are moose, bison, elk, badgers, coyotes, foxes, many species of birds, and the site's namesake pronghorn antelope.

This is one of the best free things to do in Jackson Hole to soak up Mother Nature's jaw-dropping scenery, To get here, follow highway 191 north from Jackson past Moose Junction and turn right onto Antelope Flats Road.

Chuck wagons in Cache Creek

For a fun dose of cowboy culture, sign up for a covered chuck wagon ride followed by a sunset cookout in the wilderness. After dinner, you'll be treated to tall tales, singing, and performances by local talent.

Several outfitters in the area offer packages: Bar T Five Covered Wagon Cookout & Wild West Show takes visitors into beautiful Cache Creek Canyon for an authentic Dutch-oven dinner.

Teton Wagon Train and Horse Adventure offers four-day trips by horseback or covered wagon. The scenery is exceptional, and wildlife sightings are frequent.

The chuck wagon rides usually run from Memorial Day through September and are a huge hit with families.

Granite Hot Springs

Nothing beats a soak in steamy Granite Hot Springs — especially on a chilly winter's day. Surrounded by spruce, pine, and fir trees in Bridger-Teton National Forest, this inviting pool is a favorite destination for locals and tourists alike.

In winter, it's heated to a toasty 112 degrees Fahrenheit. In summer, it averages around 93 degrees. You can soak here for up to an hour for a small fee, and changerooms and picnic tables are on hand.

Getting here is an adventure in itself. In the winter season (early December until the beginning of April), you can access the springs on a snowmobile or dogsled trip. Alternatively, you could ski in, or ride a fat bike. In the summer (usually late May through October 31), car access is possible down a bumpy dirt road.

The springs are located about a one-hour drive from the town of Jackson.

For such a small town, Jackson is big on culture. And the epicenter of cultural events in Jackson Hole is the Center for the Arts. This modern and intimate venue hosts an impressive lineup of events. The center comprises the Arts & Education Pavilion, as well as the Jean Louise and Mike Thieme Performing Arts Pavilion with a 500-seat theater, music center, and rehearsal space.

Among the many events staged at the center are ballet, opera, international music acts, films, dance performances, as well as the excellent Jackson Wild (formerly the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival ), an annual conservation summit and World Wildlife Day Film Showcase.

Classical music fans will also love the summertime Grand Teton Music Festival at Teton Village, and those who lean more towards musical theater will enjoy the delightful Christmas show at the western-style Jackson Hole Playhouse .

Jackson Hole Playhouse

Looking for unique things to do in Jackson Hole at night? Take the whole gang to a show at the historic Jackson Hole Playhouse, Wyoming's longest running professional theater. You'll find it right in downtown Jackson in the town's oldest building, dating from 1915.

You don't have to be a fan of musical theater to have a great time here. Each summer season, talented actors serve up lively performances of favorite Western-style musical comedies — think Seven Brides for Seven Brothers , Paint Your Wagon, and Annie Get Your Gun .

You can purchase a ticket for the show only, or go whole hog and buy lunch or dinner, too. Plus, you can upgrade your ticket for VIP seating. No matter which package you purchase, you'll be singing and clapping along in no time.

This is one of the best things to do in Jackson Hole with a family, and it's a great way to support the local arts.

Dogsledding in Jackson Hole

If you're not a skier, you might be wondering about other things to do in Jackson Hole in winter. How about a dogsledding adventure? It's an exhilarating way to get outside and experience this glittering winter wonderland — especially if you're an animal lover.

You'll travel along the Buffalo Fork River, led by an expert musher and a team of skilled sled dogs. All you have to do is snuggle up in a sled bag, sit back, and enjoy the scenery.

Feel like a soak in some steamy hot springs after your sledding adventure? You can also book dogsled rides to Granite Hot Springs or through the beautiful Bridger-Teton National Forest.

Yellowstone National Park

One of the world's most magnificent wilderness areas, Yellowstone is a popular day trip from Jackson Hole. It's about 57 miles from the town of Jackson, with breathtaking scenery along the way.

The park is known for its geothermal features and boasts the world's highest concentration of active geysers — Old Faithful is the most famous. Contrasting with these hissing moonscapes are sprawling green valleys, towering waterfalls, red-walled canyons, rivers, and vast lakes.

Wildlife is abundant. Among the dazzling diversity of species in these pristine ecosystems are grizzly bears, gray wolves, bison, black bears, and elk, as well as graceful trumpeter swans and bald eagles. The best way to explore the park is on the many hiking trails , however visitors can also drive the scenic Grand Loop , a 142-mile-long road that twists through the park.

Besides the geothermal attractions, park highlights include Yellowstone Lake , Hayden Valley , the Grand Canyon , and the Upper and Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River .

Tourists flock here in the summer months, but the park is open year-round and offers something different in every season, from the budding trees and flowers of spring to the fiery colors of fall and snowmobile safaris in the winter .

If you're an avid skier or snowboarder, or you're visiting Jackson Hole for other mountain-based activities, you might want to opt for a hotel near the slopes in Teton Village. • For more Western charm, choose the Wyoming Inn of Jackson Hole . Elk-antler lights, stacked stone, and a toasty fire set the tone in the impressive lobby, and the rooms are cozy and comfortable.

Budget Hotels:

  • Budget options are limited in Jackson Hole, especially in high season, but the Alpine Motel offers affordable units a short walk from the town square. Upgraded units come with kitchenettes and dining tables.
  • On a busy intersection just outside town but still near restaurants and shops, the Pony Express Motel offers good value. Some rooms come with kitchenettes, and family rooms have bunk beds.

12 Best Things To Do in Jackson Hole

Updated May 22, 2023

Thanks to its prime location near  Yellowstone  and  Grand Teton  national parks, Jackson Hole beckons to outdoors enthusiasts. Opportunities to hike abound here, while winter travelers can hit the slopes at  Jackson Hole Mountain Resort  or  Grand Targhee

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

Occupying a large chunk of Teton Village in the northwest corner of the valley, the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is a vacation destination unto itself. The primary resort area in the valley, this property boasts several hotels and timeshares and an adventure park, not to mention a variety of dining options on top and below the mountain. However, the main reason people visit the resort is to take advantage of the skiing; located at the base of Rendezvous Mountain, the resort offers prime access to 2,500 acres of ski runs and 4,139 feet of vertical drop. And with more than 400 inches of snowfall annually, it's no wonder why the area is considered to be one of the best ski resorts in the country.

Skiing isn't the only activity here. During the summertime, the resort offers visitors numerous opportunities to hike and mountain bike as well as paraglide. Recent visitors also said that a ride on the Jackson Hole Aerial Tram is a must, no matter the season. The 12-minute tram ride runs to the top of Rendezvous Mountain, allowing for breathtaking views of the Teton Mountains. If heights aren't your thing, don't fret. Travelers said there are so many activities to do there you'll likely never be bored. Some suggested arriving at the village as early as possible, as you'll probably end up staying until closing time.

Grand Teton National Park Grand Teton National Park

Boasting a whopping 310,000 acres of jagged, snow-capped peaks, verdant forests and crystal-clear alpine lakes,  Grand Teton National Park  is the highlight of any trip to Jackson Hole. It was amidst these stunning mountains that nomadic Paleo-Indians spent their summers almost 11,000 years ago and that America's 19th-century fur-trading industry thrived. Now, Grand Teton National Park plays the role of wild wonderland, offering visitors a taste of the mighty wilderness that pioneers encountered a couple of centuries ago.

There are numerous reasons to visit Grand Teton. To get a feel for the park, take a drive along the U.S. Route 89 (the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway) which traces the eastern side of the stunning Jackson Lake and continues north to the entrance of  Yellowstone National Park . However, don't spend all your time behind the wheel. Opportunities to hike, mountain climb, cross-country ski and fish are abundant. And keep your eyes peeled for a glimpse of Grand Teton's full-time residents, which include moose, elk and bison. Bears and coyotes also call the park home, so take extra precautions when heading out on a hike or setting up camp.

National Elk Refuge National Elk Refuge free

Every autumn, Jackson Hole resonates from the distinctive mating calls of one of its most prominent residents: elk. These large, deer-like creatures have roamed Jackson Hole and the nearby Teton Mountains by the thousands for many years, but they still have difficulty finding food during the harsh winter months. So as temperatures begin to drop, the Hole's herds make their way to the National Elk Refuge, a massive non-enclosed sanctuary. Visit the refuge in winter to find them waiting for spring thaw, munching on staff-provided alfalfa pellets.

While at the refuge, you can observe the animals from your car, or you can tag along on a guided sleigh ride (during the winter months). If you want to spot the most elk, plan your visit for the winter months. Travelers who visited the refuge during the warmer months reported seeing little to no elk. But those who did make the trek here during prime elk-viewing season were surprised by the amount of activity at the refuge and pleased by how close they were able to get to the animals. Many also strongly recommended scheduling the guided sleigh ride tour to get a unique look at the elk in their habitats and highly praise the guides for their expertise. If you sign up for this, make sure to wear plenty of warm layers.

Jackson Hole Playhouse Jackson Hole Playhouse

Just because the sun's gone down and the ski lifts have closed doesn't mean the fun has to stop. In the evenings, valley visitors head to the Jackson Hole Playhouse. This small dinner theater in downtown Jackson is housed in the oldest building in town, and is famous for its fun atmosphere and quality performances. The productions are so good, some past audience members have compared them to those on Broadway, despite the venue's diminutive size.

Guests are welcome to skip the dining portion of the evening and come only for the show, but many recent visitors urged future travelers to reconsider – cast members of the night's show not only serve the food, but serenade diners. Most also gave high marks for the food served, as well as the friendly hospitality.

Granite Hot Springs Granite Hot Springs

Jackson Hole's many natural attractions may cater primarily to adventure junkies, but the Granite Hot Springs are reserved solely for those in need of some rest and relaxation. Open during the winter and summer, this thermal concrete pool offers bathers beautiful views of the surrounding Bridger-Teton National Forest. The water's average temps range from a steamy 93 degrees in summer to 112 degrees in winter. Visitors can also take advantage of the area's scenic hiking and snowshoeing paths, or try whitewater rafting through the nearby Hoback Junction.

Recent visitors claimed that the scenery alone is worth the trip, saying it is a must-do. Nestled among the Gros Ventre Mountains, the hot springs are 7,000 feet above sea level, so you can only imagine the views your eyes will be treated to. Because the springs are located on the side of a mountain, the road leading up to the springs is not in the best of conditions. Travelers reported the road to be unpaved and gravely, but stressed to future visitors that the attraction is worth the climb, and if drivers simply exercise caution when driving, they can navigate it successfully.

National Museum of Wildlife Art National Museum of Wildlife Art

Combining Jackson Hole's love for the arts with its age-old respect for local fauna, the National Museum of Wildlife Art is definitely worth a visit. Located less than 3 miles north of downtown Jackson – just off Route 89 – this small museum is home to more than 5,000 works of wildlife art from more than 550 artists. Some pieces even date back to 2500 B.C. While the museum features several European pieces as well as works from Africa and New Zealand, American works dominate the 14 galleries.

Recent guests were impressed by the quality of art displayed here and said you don't need to be an art specialist to appreciate and enjoy this museum. Travelers also enjoyed the panoramic views the property afforded of the  National Elk Refuge , with some visitors able to spot animals from the museum. Make sure to check out the outdoor art, particularly the nearly mile-long Sculpture Trail, which features sculptures of area elk traversing the terrain. Others were particularly impressed with the Children’s Discovery Gallery, which includes a puppet theater, animal costumes and a reading nook.

Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum

With a stop by the Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum, travelers can learn about the area's Wild West history. Through artifacts, historical narratives and photographs, visitors will glimpse exciting characters like animal trappers, dude ranchers and cowboys, as well as the Native Americans that first inhabited the region. The museum also offers various specialty programs and events for travelers, including walking tours of the town of Jackson and local author talks.

Despite its small size, recent visitors said that the attraction is chock full of interesting information, and definitely worth your time, especially for those interested in American history. Many reviewers said it's a great place to bring children for the attraction's animal exhibits and noted the knowledge and warmth of the staff helped make their experience at the museum a memorable one.

Snow King Mountain Snow King Mountain

If you're looking to add a dash of history to your downhill run, consider a visit to the Snow King Resort in Jackson. Founded in 1939, Snow King was Wyoming's first established ski area. Ever since, avid winter sports enthusiasts have flocked here for a taste of Jackson powder. The resort boasts more than 400 acres of skiable terrain – 110 acres of which can be used for night skiing – and 1,571 feet of vertical drop. Novice skiers take note: only 50 percent of Snow King runs cater to beginners and intermediates. For easier skiing terrain, consider visiting  Grand Targhee  instead. Also located within Snow King are several areas reserved for snowboarding and tubing, as well as an ice rink and lodgings that cater to moderate budgets.

Many recent travelers agreed that the property is a bit dated for a resort but appreciated the close proximity to the town of Jackson (less than a mile and accessible via the Start bus) in comparison to the other hot spots in the area. Visitors recommended taking a ride up the ski lift for amazing views of the mountain. And if you're here during the summer, don't leave without a ride on the alpine slide, especially if you've got kids in tow.

Grand Targhee Resort Grand Targhee Resort

For those of you who aren't quite ready for the black diamond slopes at the  Jackson Hole Mountain Resort , the Grand Targhee Resort offers easier, more family-friendly runs. Located in Alta, Wyoming – a small town about 38 miles northwest of Jackson – this resort has claimed two of the Teton Mountains as its own. Here you'll find more than 2,500 acres of ski terrain that sees an average of 500 inches of snowfall each year. A sizeable portion of the resort caters to beginner and intermediate skiers, plus you can take ski lessons at Grand Targhee. However, recent visitors said that more advanced powder hounds will find several runs that cater to their skill level as well.

Recent travelers enjoyed their time at Grand Targhee Resort and noted that the resort's small size meant fewer crowds, which was a much appreciated reprieve from Jackson Hole's more congested slopes. Some travelers strongly encouraged a visit to the on-site naturalist, whose knowledge in the region's geography and botany enhanced their experience at the resort. Others, however, said if you're a skier who's looking for a challenge, try a different resort.

Jackson Hole Winery Jackson Hole Winery

This unique winery is located more than 6,000 feet above sea level at the base of the Teton Mountains, making it one of the highest wineries in the country. The grapes are grown in Sonoma, California , and then transported to Jackson Hole where the winemaking process begins. The winery's founder wanted to experiment with making wine at high altitude, where there is 18% less oxygen making for a slower fermentation process. Judging by the rave reviews from visitors, the results turned out great. Visitors also enjoyed the diverse selection of wines and said the on-site sommeliers were knowledgeable. The tasting room is located in a rustic barn setting, and there are picnic tables and chairs outside so visitors can take in views of the mountains after.

During the summer months, the winery is open every day except Tuesdays from 12 – 5 p.m. During the winter, it's open Thursday through Sunday from 12 – 4:30 p.m. Tastings are by appointment only, and guests can call ahead to reserve. Guests are also encouraged to bring their own snacks and utensils should they want to eat. Tastings cost $30 per person for groups up to seven people; those in groups with more than seven people will pay $40 per person.

Jackson Hole Horseback Riding Jackson Hole Horseback Riding

A guided trail ride is one of the best ways to experience the Cowboy State, and Jackson Hole has plenty of riding ranches for travelers to choose from. Teton Village Trail Rides offers one- and two-hour ride options that bring guests through the mountains and provide views of Snake River Ranch, Teton Mountain Resort and surrounding Jackson Hole. The company also offers a child-friendly horse adventure that allows kids to ride for 30 minutes while their parents lead the horse on a rope. Visitors say the rides are safe, and guides are knowledgeable. Ride options cost $65, $100 and $30, respectively.

Spring Creek Ranch is another popular option that also offers one- and two-hour rides. These guided journeys take riders along the East Gros Ventre Butte, providing picturesque views of the Tetons. Past riders were amazed by the scenery. One hour excursions cost about $60 while two-hour rides come in at $80. (Though reviewers generally loved their rides, they advised future travelers to skip staying at the ranch due to dated accommodations.)

jackson hole wyoming tourism

Cross Country Skiing Cross Country Skiing

Winter visitors who want to explore the snow without hitting the slopes should consider one of Jackson Hole's many cross country skiing options. Teton Pines Nordic Center offers almost 10 miles of groomed trails, and Shooting Star Nordic Track provides about 9 miles of trails with varied terrain. You can also opt to ski in nearby Grand Teton National Park – the most popular route is to Jenny Lake and back. There of plenty of equipment rental companies around downtown Jackson including Skinny Skis and Hoback Sports. Rentals usually cost between $25 and $45.

There are also plenty of guided cross country skiing options around which are a great choice if you’'e traveling with a large group or if it's your first time cross country skiing. On a tour, you'll learn the proper techniques for cross country skiing. Plus, guides can provide educational information about the natural surroundings and wildlife you encounter while you're skiing.  For a guided excursion, consider The Hole Hiking Experience or EcoTour Adventures. A half-day guided cross country ski trip usually costs around $145 per person. However, companies don't often include skis in their fees; you'll have to rent those on your own.

A First Timer’s Guide to Jackson Hole

Home » A First Timer’s Guide to Jackson Hole

If you’re coming to Wyoming on vacation, chances are you are making a trip to the insanely beautiful, Jackson . And now, I’m lucky enough to call this place home. With a good amount of time as a local under my belt, I can confidently recommend things you have to do on your first visit here.

1. Go horseback riding

A family riding horses through a creek in Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Some of the best views can be seen from the back of a horse and you can do it in two hours or less. I recommend Trails Rides at the Spring Creek Stables . The views alone are a selling point and you’ll get enough pictures to have all your friends at home drooling.

2.  Ride the Tram

aerial tram at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

When friends and family roll into town, I take them on the Tram. The ride up provides amazing views of the village and valley. When you get to the top, treat yourself to a waffle because waffles taste better when you’re on top of the world.

3.  Hike the Taggart Lake trail

two girls walking down Taggart Lake Trail towards mountains

It’s a trail that doesn’t gain too much elevation and is just over 3 miles and will get you up close and personal with the Teton’s. Be sure to get to the trailhead early since the lot fills up pretty quickly.

4.Check out some live music

We might be a small town but we are mighty in the music department. Let me give you a few options. Monday nights you’ve got the Hootenanny at Dornan’s. Tuesday nights check out Bluegrass at The Wort . Throughout the summer you can check the schedule for Jackson Hole Live . And on Sunday’s head to the village for Concerts on the Commons .

5. Ride the Snake

Raft with rafters paddling through rapids in Jackson Wyoming

Get on the river. It’s one of the most common excursions you can do in Jackson during the summer. I work in the rafting industry and I can without a doubt say you gotta do it. You’ll have a blast. You might get a little wet but the memory will last long after your clothes dry.

6. Just eat everything

I might be biased because I live here but the food in this little town constantly surprises me. You can really have it all here. A few of my favorites are coffee at Persephone , breakfast at Cafe Genevieve, lunch at Lotus Cafe, dinner at Teton Thai or Local . Looking for a night cap? My top picks are Thai Me Up for their excellent brews, The Wort for a cocktail and music and finish the night off at the popular Million Dollar Cowboy for dancing that you can count as your daily exercise. After a night of moving and grooving, do yourself a favor and get a late night slice at Pinky G’s .

7. Yellowstone

Considered to the be the crown jewel around these parts, it’s a must do for a few reasons. But I don’t think I have to tell you that.

8. Treat yourself

I’m putting this on the list because around these parts there are plenty of ways to do this. If it’s the views you’re seeking, take some time to see them. Drive the Elk Refuge Road off of Broadway and put the car in park and soak it in. If it’s a spa day you’re after, we’ve got that too. A world class meal tickles your fancy? Perfect. Head up to Couloir. Looking to take a walk on the wild side? Go on a wildlife safari . If it’s serious adventure you’re after, book a trip with Exum Guides . They are consistently rated as some of the best in the world for good reason. Whatever kind of vacation you’re after, Jackson is the place to have it. I promise that long after you leave our little heaven, you’ll be haunted to come back and eventually, you’ll be passing through again. The mountains will keep calling so you should probably just listen and come on back.

FIRST TIMER’S GUIDE: A COMPLETE JACKSON HOLE ITINERARY FOR FALL (DOWNLOADS, MAPS & MORE!)

To be honest with you I had never really paid attention or even thought of visiting the town of Jackson, Wyoming until we planned out our Yellowstone/Grand Teton. Nor did I ever think I would be writing a Jackson Hole itinerary for you, but here I am.

Small town of Jackson, Wyoming

My husband was actually the one who requested spending a day in Jackson. To be honest, at first, I wasn’t stoked on the idea. I wanted this trip to be about RV life and hiking.  However, I am so glad we spent a day in Jackson.

With that being said I wanted to share our complete one day Jackson Hole itinerary with you! We packed a lot into one day!

HOW TO GET TO JACKSON, WYOMING

The easiest and most direct to getting to Jackson, Wyoming would be to fly into the Jackson Hole airport. You can rent a car from the airport or you can do an RV trip like we did!

Jackson, Wyoming is a small town located just outside the Grand Teton National Park and it is about 1.5 hours south of Yellowstone.

Interesting fact! People tend to call it Jackson Hole instead of just Jackson. The town is technically just Jackson, Wyoming. Jackson Hole is the greater valley of Teton County in Wyoming that includes the smaller ski towns Jackson, Teton Village, Wilson, the Aspens, Moran Junction, and Moose.

Elk Arches in Jackson

The town, Jackson, is located at the southern end of Jackson Hole.

The population here is around 10,000 people! How cute is that! Such a small town. Jackson is a popular tourist destination for those who visit Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons and for those who enjoy skiing.

WHERE TO EAT

A Jackson Hole itinerary is not complete without giving you recommendations on where to eat. The town of Jackson has tons of cute shops and restaurants to eat at. The recommendations below are based on where we eat during our time in Jackson, Wyoming.

We had coffee twice from Jackson Hole Roasters Coffee House . The first time was because we wanted to grab coffee to go and we actually spent a 2nd day in Jackson just working from our computers. We stopped by Cowboy Coffee to work, but they didn’t have any seating due to COVID, so we went back to our first place.

Originally, we began to wait in line to eat at The Bunnery Bakery and Restaurant . It opened at 8am and there was already a huge line. We were starving so we opted to head somewhere else even though this place looked delicious and cute!

We headed to Cafe Genevieve for breakfast. It was in a cute little old house and there was no line! It was still delicious, has 4 stars on Yelp and to be honest you really can’t go wrong with breakfast.

As we were working from Jackson Hole Roasters we noticed people eating breakfast there too and it looked delicious as well.

Who doesn’t love a healthy lunch? Make sure to check out the Healthy Being Cafe and Juicery for delicious salads and juices.

Lunch in Jackson, Wyoming

I recommend visiting Hand Fire Pizza . Who doesn’t love a delicious pizza after a long day? Hand Fire Pizza is located in an old movie theatre. It has the cutest vibe and you get to watch them make your pizza in a huge pizza oven.

ACTIVITIES AROUND JACKSON, WYOMING

Depending on what season you visit Jackson will help determine what kind of activities you can do. This Jackson Hole Itinerary is focused on activities that you can do in and around Jackson during the Fall Season.

Considering you are so close to two National Parks, I would highly recommend you do some hiking. The options are truly endless when it comes to hiking trails. If you are looking for a moderate hike that is about 4.5 miles long then check out the Phelps Lake trail.

There are two options to get to Phelps Lake. You can follow the All Trails route by starting at the Death Canyon Trailhead or you can follow this guide and start at the Rockefeller Preserve.

Jackson Hole itinerary

Looking for an extra fun adventure!? Make sure to jump off the giant rock at Phelps Lake!

Insider’s Tip! Do note that RVs longer than 23 feet are not allowed up the road to Phelps Lake. We had an RV that was 23 feet exactly and they would not allow us up this road. We ended up parking at the bottom of the road and hitchhiking our way up.

They would not allow us to walk up the road either due to lots of Bear and Moose activity.

RENT A BIKE

This is a great way to see the entire area of Jackson Hole. Start your adventure in the town of Jackson and rent an E-bike from E-bikes of Jackson Hole .

Make sure to grab a bike route map from them before you head out. There are tons of biking route options. We chose to do the Grand Loop trail which is about 18 miles long (this is easy on an e-bike). We started in Jackson, went to Teton Village and got lunch and then biked back to Jackson.

Complete guide to Jackson Hole

If you plan to do this route, plan for about 3.5 hours. It was a gorgeous ride, especially in the Fall.

It is $40 per bike for the first 2 hours and then each additional hour is $10.

GO TO A WINERY

Visit the Jackson Hole Winery for some delicious wine and beautiful views. This winery is located just outside the main square. It is a little too far to walk here from the square, so plan to drive.

jackson hole wyoming tourism

This was a last minute decision for us and we were lucky enough to snag a spot here, but if you plan to go here then I highly recommend making a reservation !

The town of Jackson is so cute! It has an old-town, western vibe. There are tons of options for shopping. You can plan to grab any souvenir items you may want here or just check out some of the amazing art galleries.

Things to do in Jackson

Make sure to walk through the main town square under their famous real Elk antler arches.

If you happen to be in town on a Saturday, they have farmer’s markets in the mornings during the Summer and the beginning of Fall.

WATCH A MOVIE

This one is a little insiders tip for you! Head to the Teton Gravity Research shop and walk to the back of the store. There is a small little movie theatre where they play some epic adventure videos.

The Teton Gravity Research is a film company that creates films about epic adventure sports. Watching these videos are pretty incredible and inspiring.

FINAL THOUGHTS FROM YOUR OUTDOOR LOVING GIRL

Jackson is probably one of the cutest towns I have ever visited and I highly recommend you plan to visit it! Even if you just have time to visit the main town square! Do you have a favorite small town? I would love to know in the comments!

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — As Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming opens for the busy summer season, wildlife advocates are leading a call for a boycott of the conservative ranching state over laws that give people wide leeway to kill gray wolves with little oversight.

The social media accounts of Wyoming’s tourism agency are being flooded with comments urging people to steer clear of the Cowboy State amid accusations that a man struck a wolf with a snowmobile, taped its mouth shut and showed off the injured animal at a Sublette County bar before killing it.

While critics contend that Wyoming has enabled such animal cruelty, a leader of the state’s stock growers association said it’s an isolated incident and unrelated to the state’s wolf management laws. The laws that have been in place for more than a decade are designed to prevent the predators from proliferating out of the mountainous Yellowstone region and into other areas where ranchers run cattle and sheep.

“This was an abusive action. None of us condone it. It never should never have been done,” said Jim Magagna, executive vice president of the Wyoming Stock Growers Association and a Sublette County rancher who has lost sheep to wolves. “It’s gotten a lot of media attention but it’s not exemplary of how we manage wolves to deal with livestock issues or anything.”

Wolves are federally protected as an endangered or threatened species in most of the U.S. but not the Northern Rockies. Wyoming, Idaho and Montana allow wolves to be hunted and trapped , after their numbers rebounded following their reintroduction to Yellowstone and central Idaho almost 30 years ago. Before their reintroduction, wolves had been annihilated in the lower 48 states through government-sponsored poisoning, trapping and bounty hunting into the mid-1900s.

Today, Wyoming has the least restrictive policies for killing wolves. There are limits on hunting and trapping in the northwestern corner of the state and killing them is prohibited in Yellowstone and neighboring Grand Teton National Park, where they are a major attraction for millions of tourists. But outside the Yellowstone region, in the 85% of the state known as the “predator zone,” they can be freely killed.

The wolf allegedly was run down, shown off and killed within the predator zone.

Wolves roam hundreds of miles and often kill cattle and sheep. Gray wolves attacked livestock hundreds of times in 2022 across 10 states including Wyoming, according to an Associated Press review of depredation data from state and federal agencies, the most recent data available. Other times livestock succumb to other predators, disease or exposure or simply go missing.

Losses to wolves can be devastating to individual ranchers, yet wolves’ industry-wide impact is negligible: The number of cattle killed or injured in documented cases equals 0.002% of herds in the affected states, according to a comparison of depredation data with state livestock inventories.

The predator zone resulted from negotiations between U.S. and Wyoming officials who traded away federal compensation for livestock killed by wolves in exchange for allowing free killing of wolves in that area.

Saharai Salazar is among out-of-staters changing their travel plans based on what allegedly happened Feb. 29 near Daniel, a western Wyoming town of about 150 people.

The Santa Rosa, California, dog trainer posted on the state’s tourism Instagram account that she would not get married in Wyoming next year as planned. The post was among hundreds of similar comments, many with a #boycottwyoming hashtag on social media in recent weeks.

“We have to change the legislation, rewrite the laws so we can offer more protection, so they can’t be interpreted in ways that will allow for such atrocities,” Salazar said in an interview.

Wyoming’s rules have long invited controversy but are unlikely to harm the overall population because most of the animals in the state live in the Yellowstone region, said wolf expert and former U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wolf biologist Ed Bangs.

Bangs said the incident of the wolf brought into the bar was a “sideshow” to the species’ successful recovery. The predator zone is made up largely of open landscapes that generally don’t support wolves, he said.

Wyoming’s rules, including the predator zone, have withstood multiple court challenges that have put wolves on and off the endangered species list since they were first delisted in 2008. Wolves haven’t been on the list in the region since a 2017 court order and their current Wyoming population of more than 300 is similar to their number in 2010.

Though state law doesn’t specify how wolves in the predator zone can be killed and doesn’t specifically prohibit running them over, the Humane Society and others argue the state’s animal cruelty law applies in this case.

Widely circulating photos show the man posing with the wolf with its mouth bound. Video clips show the same animal lying on a floor, alive but barely moving.

The Sublette County Sheriff’s Office said it has been investigating the anonymous reports of the man’s actions but has struggled to get witnesses to come forward.

“We’ve had the tip line open for two weeks hoping for witnesses or something helpful,” sheriff’s spokesperson Sgt. Travis Bingham said. “I know there’s some hesitation for people to come forward.”

The only punishment for the man so far is having to pay a $250 ticket for illegal possession of wildlife.

The suspect has not commented publicly and did not answer calls to his business. Calls to the bar went unanswered.
