What clients say.

I was just on the 6 day Algonquin trip with your guide Robin. Just wanted to send you a quick email to thank you for the experience. The professionalism and execution of the trip was like nothing I’ve ever seen. There was not a single thing that was not considered and accounted for. I appreciate the time and expertise that you put into your expeditions, it shows. I would like to send her a thank you as well, she was an incredible guide.

Thanks also for such a beautiful trip. It was excellent on all counts – great guide – wonderful fellow paddlers – good – equipment and campsite – and of course just being out ‘there’ on a stellar weekend. And I loved that part of Algonquin which I had never been to before. Hope that you both have a great summer and I look forward to another trip at some point.

We have just returned from your Kayaking with Orca whales trip ……., and would like to say we had a fantastic time, ignoring the weather, which was a trifle damp. Janet who led the trip is an amazing woman, every question anybody asked she knew everything about it. She was so layed back, never stressed, or never showed it if she was. She made everybody feel good about themselves, especially me (Mitzi), as I am not a sporty person. The food was very good, well, as was everything, I cannot praise everything enough. Thank Janet for making the trip so good, and also Erin, for keeping us fed. It was brilliant thanks again.”

“I have to tell you that our experience in the Algonquin Park was one of the best and more exiting I ever had. When I talk about my Canadian vacation our canoe trip is my favourite subject. I keep a wonderfull memory of that week. I just wanted to let you know that you made a great job!”

Once again, I wanted to thank you for our 3 Day Algonquin Canoe trip. Despite the rain, my Dad and I had a great time. Our experience was memorable, and I learned much more adding to the knowledge from my first trip with you. The gear was top notch, food was delicious, and scenery was awesome. I feel confident I can do this with my family now. I am planning to see you again next year for the 5 Day Kayak, and maybe more.

We acknowledge that Georgian Bay is situated on the traditional territories of the Anishinaabe First Nations, including the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Pottawatomi peoples, as well as the Huron-Wendat and Haudenosaunee Confederacy. These lands have been a site of human activity for over 10,000 years, and continue to be home to many Indigenous communities who have a deep connection to this land, water, and all living beings.

We recognize the ongoing importance of Indigenous knowledge, culture, and history, and the ongoing impacts of colonialism and systemic oppression on Indigenous peoples. We commit to learning from and supporting the efforts of Indigenous communities toward healing, reconciliation, and self-determination.

We acknowledge that kayaking was founded as the traditional skill of survival of the indigenous cultures in the high Arctic. We honour this heritage by teaching skills with contemporary and traditional paddles. We also acknowledge that the locations we teach and guide kayaking are the traditional territories of multiple indigenous groups.

Where to go kayaking in Ontario

When to go kayaking in ontario, guided kayaking tour companies, where to take kayak lessons, how and where to rent a kayak, what to bring on a kayak trip, what to know before you go kayaking, on this page, beginner’s guide to kayaking in ontario.

Due to its unique geography, Ontario is home to world-class kayaking experiences.

Thousands of kilometres of Great Lakes coastline offer wilderness kayak touring and day paddling experiences with open horizons and island archipelagos. Other large lakes across Central and Northern Ontario, including Lake Temagami and Lake of the Woods, feature polished granite shorelines and towering pines, with secluded island campsites and endless bays and inlets. Eastern Ontario’s Ottawa and Madawaska Rivers attract the world’s best whitewater kayakers. Discover hidden island oases while kayaking adjacent to Toronto’s downtown.

Kayaking is suitable for just about everyone, from families to fitness enthusiasts, and it’s a great way to spend time in nature, birdwatching, fishing or capturing great photographs. If you’re new to kayaking, here is an overview of where and when to go kayaking and a list of great guides, outfitters and instructors who can help you develop your kayak skills and discover the joy of paddling in Ontario.

Ontario is home to amazing and diverse paddling destinations, from sea kayaking the big waters along the coastlines of Lake Superior and Lake Huron to the rough and tumble whitewater river action in the Ottawa Valley. Less experienced kayakers will want to start in calm (flatwater), sheltered locations with warm water conditions and easy access points perfect for entry-level recreation kayak models.

Here are some great places for your first paddling trips in Southern Ontario.

  • The Grand and Nith Rivers : the wonderful flatwater kayak paddling is a great way to encounter the rich biodiversity of the region
  • The Toronto Islands : explore quiet inlets and lagoons and get a unique perspective on Canada’s largest urban area
  • Rouge National Urban Park : the lakeside marsh offers great paddling opportunities in the east side of Toronto
  • Guelph Lake and Big Bend on the Thames River : both regional conservation spots provide excellent flatwater kayaking

Check out these destinations for beginner kayaking in Northern Ontario.

  • Algonquin Provincial Park : although known as canoe country, the inland lakes along the Highway 60 corridor are great for kayaking, too. Stay at one of the park’s many campgrounds and enjoy quiet water paddling on pristine lakes
  • Kivi Park and Ramsey Lake : Sudbury is aptly known as the “city of lakes” for the mosaic of freshwater lakes, many of which off beginner-friendly conditions
  • North Bay : boasts a multitude of kayaking options including Lake Nipissing and Trout Lake
  • Killbear Provincial Park : Killbear offers a great introduction to Georgian Bay’s 30,000 Islands with hundreds of campsites, sandy beaches, rocky headlands and great views out toward the open bay
  • The Sault College Waterfront Adventure Centre : located on the shore of the St. Marys River in Sault Ste. Marie, the centre is another hub for paddlers in the heart of the Great Lakes offering kayak rentals
  • Thunder Bay : located on the northwest shore of Lake Superior and close to many smaller lakes, Thunder Bay features outstanding access to amazing freshwater kayaking, including Boulevard Lake
  • Kenora : the capital of northwestern Ontario’s cottage country boasts many great options for beginner-friendly kayaking on Lake of the Woods and countless other inland lakes

The paddling season in Ontario spans May through October. During July and August the water temperatures are at their peak and weather conditions are generally the most stable. Of course, peak season also coincides with the greatest number of visitors to Ontario’s best paddling destinations, so you’ll want to book your Ontario Parks permits well in advance and make reservations if you’re planning to stay in a campground.

During the shoulder seasons of May and June, the water is cooler so you’ll want to dress for the water temperature with a wetsuit or drysuit to protect yourself from hypothermia in the event of a mishap. Springtime paddling often affords better fishing for kayak anglers, great wildlife encounters and quieter camping opportunities in popular destinations.

Many experienced paddlers argue that September is the best time of year to kayak, with its warm water, pleasant weather and fewer crowds. However, autumn tends to be windier, particularly on the Great Lakes.

Regardless of the season, you’re most likely to find calm, beginner-friendly paddling conditions in the mornings. Dawn outings have the added bonus of solitude and a greater likelihood of seeing birds and wildlife along the shores.

A guided kayak trip is a great way to get on the water while leaving the planning, logistics and equipment to be handled by experts. This allows you to enjoy the paddling experience comfortably and safely.

Novice and beginner kayakers can venture into more exposed conditions on remote shorelines when accompanied by a professional guide.

Tour operators across the province offer routes and itineraries to match your skill level and aspirations, whether it’s a short evening outing, a day trip or a weeklong expedition. Kayaks and gear are provided on most guided trips.

Get started with these guided tour operators and kayaking packages.

  • Check out Liv Outside Adventures for all-inclusive tours on Lake Muskoka and other paddling destinations in Ontario’s cottage country.
  • Parry Sound-based Black Feather Wilderness Adventure Company offers beginner-friendly sea kayak trips on Georgian Bay, including two-day skills clinics and three-day introductory trips.
  • Sudbury’s Horizons Adventures offers guided day trips and multi-day trips for beginners and novices on Lake Huron’s island-pocked North Channel.
  • Naturally Superior Adventures specializes in Lake Superior sea kayaking trips, beginner-friendly day trips, weekend getaways and five-day outings from the town of Wawa.
  • Such a Nice Day Adventures provides basic sea kayak day trips and guided multi-day tours out of Thunder Bay and Rossport.
  • Green Adventures in Kenora offers guided kayak day trips on northwestern Ontario’s Lake of the Woods.
  • In southwestern Ontario check out Thorncrest Outfitters in Southampton and Paris’s Grand Experiences for guided kayak day trips on southern Lake Huron and the Grand River, respectively.
  • 1000 Islands Kayaking in Gananoque provides guided day- and camping tours on Lake Ontario.

Generally basic kayaking is easier to learn than canoeing. You often paddle solo so you don’t have to coordinate your motions with a partner, and the double-bladed paddle reduces the need for complicated steering strokes.

However, to fully appreciate all the advantages of a kayak, such as the ability to perform deepwater rescues and paddle in rough water conditions, you’re best to take individual or group lessons. A kayak skills course will arm you with safe and efficient paddling techniques. Many guided canoe trips will include a strong instructional component to ensure you’re using proper techniques.

Here’s a comprehensive list of kayak instructors across Ontario.

  • A few great options for sea kayaking instruction includes Parry Sound’s Ontario Sea Kayak Centre , Toronto’s Harbourfront Canoe and Kayak , Wawa’s Naturally Superior Adventures and Sudbury’s Horizon Adventures .
  • For whitewater kayaking check out Madawaska Kanu Centre and the Ottawa Kayak School , both located in eastern Ontario.
  • You can also search the Paddle Canada and Ontario Recreational Canoeing & Kayaking Association (ORCKA) websites for course offerings across the province.

Buying a kayak is a big investment. Renting kayaks is the best way to sample different kayak designs. It’s also convenient if you have limited transportation and storage options. And it’s usually a more economical option if you only plan on doing one or two kayak trips per year.

Per hour or per day rates decrease with the length of a kayak rental, so think about how long you’ll need a boat and make your reservation accordingly. Also be aware of pickup and drop off locations; you may need a roof rack (or at the very least, foam blocks) and straps to transport a kayak on your vehicle. Delivery can be arranged for rental kayaks in popular areas like Killarney and Algonquin Provincial Park, but this option isn’t available everywhere.

Local outfitters generally keep a fleet of kayaks that are suitable for nearby paddling conditions. For an afternoon midsummer outing on calm, sheltered water, a well-designed ,12- to 14-foot day-touring (single-person) kayak would be the safest, most efficient and comfortable to paddle. You’ll need a touring kayak for overnight trips, ideally ranging in length from 15- to 17-foot (for single person models) with bulkheads and storage hatches for camping equipment. Tandem kayaks are also available from most outfitters if you wish to paddle with a partner; tandems also work well with children over 10 years of age. Tandems are extremely stable but they’re also larger (18 to 22 feet long), heavier (minimum 110 pounds) and cumbersome to carry on land and require a large vehicle or trailer for transportation.

Ask the outfitter in advance for the makes and models of rental kayaks they supply and do some research on a website like the Paddling Buyer’s Guide to make sure you’re getting a boat that meets your needs. Durable plastic kayaks are most common for rentals, though you may find some outfitters with lighter weight, higher performance thermoform and composite kayaks if you desire a sleeker craft.

Your rental kayak should come with necessary accessories and Canadian Coast Guard standard safety gear, including a paddle (ask for a spare if you’re going on a longer trip); PFD (personal flotation device or life jacket); a bailer; a sound-signaling device (whistle) and a throw-bag or 15 metres of floating rope. Inspect the kayak to make sure that it’s intact and isn’t missing any parts, such as hatch covers. A spray skirt is necessary for open water paddling but requires specific knowledge to be used safely; the outfitter may ask you to demonstrate an emergency wet exit in order to include a sprayskirt with your rental. Wetsuits and paddling jackets may also be available to rent. Ask for instructions on how to adjust the fit of foot braces, thigh rests and seat, as well as how to properly seal the hatches and use features like a rudder or skeg. Some waterfront kayak rental locations may allow you to test paddle a few boats in advance before making your selection.

Kayak rentals are available in all of Ontario’s best paddling destinations, including:

  • Harbourfront Canoe and Kayak Centre , Toronto
  • White Squall Paddling Centre , Parry Sound
  • Muskoka Paddleshack , Muskoka
  • Killarney Outfitters , Killarney
  • Algonquin Outfitters , Huntsville, Algonquin Park and Minden
  • The Portage Store , Algonquin Park
  • Ottawa Valley Canoe and Kayak , Ottawa
  • Adventure North , Elliot Lake
  • Sault College Waterfront Adventure Centre , Sault Ste. Marie
  • Naturally Superior Adventures , Wawa
  • Wilderness Supply , Thunder Bay
  • Green Adventures , Kenora

Here’s a comprehensive list of outfitters all across the province.

Items on a gear list for a kayak day trip come down to safety and comfort.

Once you settle on renting, borrowing or buying your own kayak, make sure it is outfitted to Canadian Coast Guard standards (see above). In addition, you’ll need:

  • A paddle, lightweight models are easier and more efficient.
  • Always wear your PFD while paddling (comfortable kayaking-specific PFDs are available for all body types, look for the Canadian Coast Guard certification on the label) and dress for the water temperature; it’s a good idea to wear a wetsuit or drysuit for spring and fall conditions, and often year-round on the Great Lakes. A good pair of paddling booties will keep your feet warm and protect them from sharp or slippery rocks on landings. Paddling gloves or mitts are also a good idea if the water and air temperatures are cold. Spray jackets keep you warm and dry in wet and windy weather.
  • Sprayskirts keep water out of your boat and keep your lower body warm, which is essential when paddling in more exposed locations. Nylon (cooler, easier on and off) and neoprene (warmer, more waterproof) skirts are available in sizes to fit the cockpit rims of most sit-inside kayaks. Sprayskirts are only suitable for paddlers who have practiced the wet exit (the technique used to exit the kayak when capsized).
  • Bring a map of your route, a compass and a waterproof map case so you can navigate on the water.
  • Carry all electronics in waterproof cases or drybags, along with a change of clothes (including warm, insulating layers), a lighter or matches, and a small first aid kit. Bring your cell phone for emergency communication but make sure it’s fully charged and that it will have a signal in the location you’re paddling; you may want a satellite communication device (such as a Garmin InReach or SPOT) for longer stays in more remote areas.
  • Pack drinking water (or a treatment system), snacks and food.
  • A hat, sunglasses and sunblock are mandatory accessories for summer outings.
  • A small tarp is a good idea in case of rain or weather delays.
  • And leave a trip plan (including your route, schedule, group members’ emergency contacts, and what to do in case of delay) with a trusted friend before you set off.

Good kayakers never stop learning. You will be constantly adapting your skills and packing list as your paddling skills progress. Here are a few important safety tips while you enjoy Ontario’s kayaking destinations.

  • Always wear your PFD.
  • Make sure your kayak is equipped to Canadian Coast Guard standards with a bailer (or bilge pump), sound signaling device (a whistle), 15-metres of buoyant rope, and PFDs for everyone on board; paddlers who fail to meet these requirements are subject to fines.
  • Travel with at least one other kayak for safety on the water.
  • Leave no trace. Review guidelines for Leave No Trace camping online .
  • Treat the water. Boil your drinking water or use a filter or chemical treatment to eliminate the risk of water-borne illnesses.
  • Be reasonable with your objective. The goals for your first kayak trip should be safety and inspiration, not epic distances.

8 incredible guided canoe trips in ontario (according to a canoe guide).

Canoes at first campsite

Ontario is a premier destination for guided canoe trips. The province offers exciting trips for the novice, intermediate and advanced paddler. Some destinations require a full day of driving, while others can be reached in just a few hours. Some destinations feature incredible wildlife; others have exciting whitewater. Any outdoorsy soul will find solace in Ontario’s wild spaces.

And even for those who aren’t particularly outdoorsy, I think a canoe-guided trip is the best kind of trip you can take in Ontario. It introduces you to the beautiful scenery and sheer vastness (and shows that Ontario is much more than the CN Tower and Niagara Falls).

I was a canoe guide in this beautiful province for four seasons, and I still find somewhere new to paddle each summer. So if you’re thinking of taking a guided canoe trip in Ontario, read on! Here are the best canoe trips in Ontario!

8 Incredible Guided Canoe Trips in Ontario

Killarney provincial park.

What You’ll Love: The absolutely gorgeous scenery

Recommended Guided Trip : Killarney Fall Colours – Weekend Getaway

Location : North shore of Georgian Bay // 4.5 hours from Toronto or 6 hours from Ottawa

Killarney Provincial Park is one of my favourite places in all of Canada. The turquoise waters of Georgian Bay splash upon the granite shoreline; the quartz in the rock shimmers in the sunlight and makes the tall peaks look iridescent. Killarney is, in my opinion, the best place to take your first canoe trip.

The campsites are very nice and well maintained. They offer flat areas for tents, a solid fire pit for cooking, and thunderboxes for when nature calls. Anyone would be very comfortable joining one of the guided canoe trips in Killarney.

The one downside to Killarney is that, depending on the route chosen, you might be faced with a lot of portages. Thus, your guide will choose a route that offers breathtaking scenery without a 3 km portage! They will provide ultralight kevlar canoes for easy portaging. If you would like to carry a canoe, they can teach you proper technique, or if you would like to avoid carrying a canoe, they can take the load.

Killarney is especially beautiful in autumn when the leaves change to orange and red with the quartzite hills in the background. >>I recommend taking this guided canoe trip in mid-autumn.

Petawawa River

What You’ll Love : Exciting whitewater close to Toronto

Recommended Guided Trip : Petawawa River Whitewater Adventure

Location : Northeast of Algonquin Provincial Park // 4.5 hours from Toronto or 1.5 hours from Ottawa

Algonquin Provincial Park can be a great place to do a self-guided canoe trip. If you aren’t very experienced, however, you will be forced to stay on popular flat-water routes and are likely to see many other paddlers. Queue the Petawawa River.

Located in the northeast of Algonquin, the Petawawa River offers beautiful scenery and exciting whitewater for novice paddlers. Your guide will teach you the paddling strokes required for whitewater paddling and introduce you to scouting rapids.

And the Petawawa River is a great destination if you don’t have a lot of time. A typical trip covers 50 km over four days, and the starting point is just five hours from Toronto. You could do the whole trip only by taking two vacation days from work!

I did a guided canoe trip on the Petawawa this summer actually. I am an experienced whitewater paddler, but my dad and brother were not. So we joined MHO Adventures for a four-day trip ( this is the exact trip we took ). My dad especially loved it and signed up for two more guided canoe trips for next summer.

Algonquin Provincial Park

What You’ll Love : Foliage colours in the autumn, well-maintained campsites

Recommended Trip : Algonquin Outfitters Guided Canoe Trip

Location : 3 hours from Toronto or 3 hours from Ottawa

If you’d rather stick to flat water, you’re still in luck. Algonquin is probably the most popular destination for guided camping trips in Ontario (and maybe even Canada). There are tons and tons of outfitters servicing the park with guided canoe trips.

This is helpful because, with over 7,000 km of possible canoe routes, Algonquin can be a little overwhelming if you don’t have much experience. I’ve made four trips to Algonquin already, but I still call an outfitter for advice on what route I should choose – there are just so many options!

Another reason a guided canoe trip in Algonquin Park is a great option is that Algonquin is perfect for novice canoeists. The park has well-developed facilities; tent spots are nice, thunderboxes are available, and there are ample routes for beginners.

Missinaibi River

What You’ll Love : Paddling fun whitewater on a remote river – the epitome of wilderness

Recommended Guided Trip : Upper Missinaibi Whitewater Adventure OR Full Missinaibi River Adventure

Location : Northeast of Lake Superior // 9.5 hours from Toronto or 6 hours from Sudbury

The Missinaibi River is a Canadian Heritage River due to the key role it played in the fur trade. Indigenous people and voyageurs alike used the river to navigate between James Bay and Lake Superior.

The Upper Missinaibi has tons of exciting rapids to paddle. You’ll have a few portages, but all will be around beautiful waterfalls and chutes. That said, this should only be paddled by guided groups (unless you are an advanced paddler with whitewater rescue skills). >>Click here to read about a guided trip on the Upper Missinaibi.

Your guide will tell you what rapids are possible to paddle and which ones need to be portaged. If someone flips their canoe, your guide is there to help.

If you have teenage children, I think this is the best option for family canoe trips in Ontario. I guided eight 15-year-olds on the Missinaibi River and they absolutely loved it.

Of all the guided canoe trips in Ontario, this one offers the most exciting rapids in the most remote environment. The campsites are well-maintained but are significantly less developed than in provincial parks further south. You’ll feel a true sense of wilderness here!

Seriously, paddling the entire length of Missinaibi River should be on the top of everyone’s bucket list. It was truly incredible.

Recommended Guided Trip : Moose River Journey to the Northern Sky

Location : Southwest of James Bay // 9.5 hours from Toronto or 6 hours from Sudbury

In northern Ontario, the Missinaibi and Mattagami rivers meet and together they become the Moose River. From there, the Moose River flows to the salty waters of James Bay. If you would like to experience the expansive landscape of a tundra river, without flying all the way to the territories, the Moose River is the best destination.

The river is perfect for novice paddlers; it doesn’t have any portages and it only has one set of rapids. The scenery includes a sprawling sky (with the chance of seeing northern lights in August) and spiny spruce trees, characteristic of the Hudson Bay Lowlands.

Where the Moose River meets James Bay lies the towns of Moose Factory and Moosonee. Here you can explore the well-preserved Hudson Bay Company trading post buildings and return south via the Polar Bear Express.

Can’t decide between the Missinaibi and Moose rivers? Do them both on the same trip! I guided a 24 day trip on these rivers and the Missinaibi / Moose rivers remain my favourite place ever paddled. As one of the best experiences of my life, I think it is worthy of any outdoor enthusiast’s bucket list. There is no better way to disconnect from busy city life than with a three-week adventure in the wilderness. >>This guided trip offers the opportunity to paddle the entire Missinaibi River .

French River

What You’ll Love : Paddling through a beautiful gorge

Recommended Guided Trip : French River Family Adventure

Location : Northeast of Georgian Bay // 3.5 hours from Toronto or 5.5 hours from Ottawa

The French River is like a cross between the Petawawa River and Killarney Provincial Park. Over four days you’ll be treated to scenic gorges, interconnected lakes, and some whitewater rapids. The river ends at Georgian Bay, offering a stunning landscape similar to that of Killarney.

The campsites are nice and offer the backcountry comforts of flat tent spots and sturdy fire pits. This river is designated a Canadian Heritage River and is just three hours from Toronto, making it an accessible adventure for those short on time.

You’ll love paddling with steep granite cliffs on either side. The sunrises are incredible, and the sunsets are equally brilliant. Canoeing the French River will be the perfect getaway from city life!

Spanish River

What You’ll Love : Whitewater suitable for families

Recommended Trip : Spanish River Family Adventure

Location : Northwest of Georgian Bay // 5 hours from Toronto or 6.5 hours from Ottawa

The Spanish River is a Canadian Classic and rightfully so. Weaving through the granite slopes of the Canadian Shield, the Spanish River offers a touch of whitewater and beautiful scenery.

One of the coolest parts about paddling the Spanish River is that your journey includes a train ride on Via Rail. Have you ever paddled anywhere that wasn’t accessible by road? Have you ever portaged a canoe in and out of a trail car? I have and it’s a quintessentially Canadian endeavor.

The Spanish River doesn’t have enough rapids to satisfy a whitewater junkie, so if you’re looking for whitewater specifically you would be better choosing the Petawawa or Missinaibi.

However, the rapids that are there offer a great introduction to whitewater paddling, especially if you have kids. This is a great guided canoe trip for families.

What You’ll Love : Vast wilderness, boreal forest, peace and quiet

Recommended Guided Trip : Temagami – Lady Evelyn River and Makobe River

Location : Northeast of Georgian Bay // 4.5 hours from Toronto or 5 hours from Ottawa

And last but not least is Temagami. I’ll admit that I’m a little biased, but I think Temagami is absolutely magical. Temagami is where I took my very first major canoe trip. For two weeks, 11 fifteen-year-olds and two guides canoed through just a small pocket of Temagami’s vast wilderness.

When I say vast, I truly mean vast; Temagami is humungous. This region covers a mix of crown land and provincial parks and is larger than Belgium.

Temagami is unlike Algonquin or Killarney, which have been very developed and don’t always feel like the epitome of wilderness. Temagami, on the other hand, is far less travelled and less developed. This does make choosing a canoe route a little more difficult, and you’re much further from help if something should go wrong.

So for that reason, Temagami can be a great place for taking a guided canoe trip.

What to Know About Guided Canoe Trips

If you haven’t taken a guided canoe trip before (or any canoe trip for that matter), you may not know what to expect. As someone who has guided and been guided, here are a few things you can expect on a guided canoe trip.

Almost all of the gear is provided

The majority of the gear will be provided to you at the start of your trip. This typically includes tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooking equipment, safety equipment and paddling equipment. On the trip I took with MHO, they even provided camp chairs and canoe barrels for our stuff, so we were comfortable throughout the trip.

The only thing you need to provide is your own personal clothing, and the outfitter will give you a packing list ahead of the trip to ensure you have the right clothing.

If you have gear already, however, you can still bring it. I brought my own sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent and life jacket. But that’s just because I like my own gear a lot.

You can help as much or as little as you want

If you want to learn how to rehydrate pasta sauce and cook over a fire, your guide will teach you. But if you want to sit by the chair sipping a glass of wine, you can totally do that too.

I say this as someone who has guided a ton of canoe trips: don’t feel bad making us do everything. That’s why we’re there! However, if you would like to learn, we are keen to teach.

Your safety is in good hands

The number one reason I recommend people take a guided canoe trip is because of safety. If something goes wrong in a backcountry, like injury or illness, you want to have someone who has wilderness first aid training and the right equipment.

Or if you’re an experienced canoe camper, but you want to try out whitewater, a guided canoe trip is a great way to get your first experience in moving water. Your guide will be trained in whitewater rescue safety and will have all the equipment (including helmets, a rescue knife, throw bags, a de-pinning kit and outfitted canoes).

Guided Canoe Trips in Ontario – Final Thoughts

I hope you’ve found this post helpful and it’s brought you one step closer to figuring out where you’d like to paddle next. If you’re still unsure, my recommendation is either the Missinaibi (for whitewater) or Killarney (for flatwater). But really any of the destinations listed here are amazing!

Hi are there any guided canoe trips near Ottawa close to Quebec ?

Yes! There are quite a few guided canoe trips on the Dumoine River, Coulonge River and Noire River. All are in Quebec but are very close to Ottawa, as the rivers flow directly into the Ottawa River. The Petawawa River isn’t too far from Ottawa either.

French River

Canoeing Skill Level: 1 of 4

French River, Ontario (Black Feather)

On this four day canoe trip, we paddle the most scenic section of the French River – starting at Wolseley Bay and finishing at Highway 69. The river has excellent campsites, clear water, and beautiful Canadian Shield scenery. With some fun and fairly-easy rapids, there are lots of opportunities to learn and practice whitewater canoeing skills. There is also time for photography, swimming, and enjoying this beautiful natural setting.

No previous experience is required to enjoy this wilderness getaway. The trip is an excellent one for those with prior experience wanting to introduce family or friends to canoe camping and to give them a taste for whitewater paddling.

9 Outstanding No-Portage Canoe Trips in Ontario

guided kayak tours ontario

Most canoeists have a love/hate relationship with portages. Schlepping your stuff over a portage trail or two is a surefire way to avoid busy campsites and congested lakes. On the other hand, portaging is seriously demanding—especially if you’re travelling with kids, looking for a more relaxing outdoor experience, or wanting to bring along the proverbial kitchen sink.

Not to worry, Ontario is full of canoe trip options that achieve the elusive goal of wilderness and solitude without the physical challenge of carrying your gear around rapids or between lakes. Depending on your vacation window and skill level, there are no-portage canoe trips in Ontario that span a day to a week or more.

Our list of Ontario’s best no-portage canoe trips includes easy downriver day trips as well as two-week wilderness expeditions in the Far North. Be aware that no portage doesn’t mean no challenge. The trade off for a lack of carries is often big water, and some of our suggested routes on Lake Superior, Georgian Bay and other large lakes demand expert canoe tripping skills, good judgment and a high degree of caution.

Skip the portaging with these great Ontario canoe routes.

Pu kaskwa National Park, Lake Superior

The 200-kilometre stretch of wild Lake Superior between the towns of Marathon and Wawa, tracing the coastline of Pukaskwa National Park , easily ranks among Canada’s greatest paddling destinations. This coastal route is a favourite for experienced sea kayakers, but it’s also an excellent choice as a no portage canoe trip—particularly for those with advanced canoeing and wilderness tripping skills. It’s best to set aside two weeks for this epic trip. The rugged Pukaskwa coast reveals jaw-dropping scenery at every turn, including impressive headlands, sweeping sand beaches, towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls.

There are plenty of exceptional campsites with good landings, and also longer stretches up to eight kilometres with few options to get off the water when conditions are rough. Make sure you have plenty of flexibility built in your schedule and equip your canoe with a spray cover for added seaworthiness. Late July and early August is the ideal time to paddle the Lake Superior coast.

  • Though Pukaskwa is rarely busy, it’s a good idea to book your backcountry campsites in advance
  • Get a vehicle shuttle (and a place to stay or camp on Lake Superior before and after your trip) with Naturally Superior Adventures and Rock Island Lodge. Canoe rentals are also available
  • Naturally Superior Adventures and Ontario Sea Kayak Centre offer guided sea kayak trips on the Pukaskwa coast, perfect for experienced paddlers wanting to see the shoreline from a different vessel

Lake of the Woods, Kenora

Lake of the Woods is the inland sea of northwestern Ontario, featuring a mind-blowing array of islands and enough shoreline to inspire a lifetime of adventure. East of Kenora, the Lake of the Woods shore is a mix of sand beaches and lushly forested islands all the way to the mouth of the Rushing River, part of the Path of the Paddle section of the Trans-Canada Trail.

It’s important to note that this is big water that’s subject to strong winds, so be sure to assess your skills and make sure you paddle a seaworthy canoe. For a three-day, no-portage route on more sheltered water check out the Path of the Paddle segment from Keewatin, just west of Kenora, to the community of Minaki. It’s best to tackle this stretch of the Winnipeg River in the shoulder seasons to avoid motorboat traffic.

  • For canoe rentals and expert local advice check out Green Adventures in Kenora
  • Interactive digital maps can help you plan routes on the Path of the Paddle water trail throughout northwestern Ontario, a part of the Trans-Canada Trail
  • Minaki Yurt Adventures provide unique accommodations on nature’s doorstep, located north of Kenora and just off the Path of the Paddle water trail

Two men paddling a white canoe toward a rocky shoreline.

Philip Edward Island, Georgian Bay

Located in the northwestern corner of Georgian Bay between Killarney and French River, Philip Edward Island is ancient canoe country that has served indigenous and non-indigenous travellers for millennia. While the outer, southern shores of Philip Edward Island and its outlying islands feature classic Georgian Bay pine-and-granite scenery, the sheltered waters of Collins Inlet to the north creates an ideal canoe channel.

Working with the weather, you can often complete a circumnavigation of the island in four to five days, with July and August being the ideal months to plan a trip. Killarney Provincial Park permits are required to launch from the mainland at Chikanishing River, off of Highway 637 just east of the village of Killarney.

  • You can ride the Park Bus from Toronto to Killarney’s George Lake Campground and pick up rental canoes (and a short vehicle shuttle to the put-in) from Killarney Outfitters
  • Be sure to end your trip with classic fish and chips at Herbert Fisheries on the waterfront in Killarney
  • Splurge with a night’s stay at the luxe Killarney Mountain Lodge before or after your trip

Two canoes paddle on wavy lake next to shoreline on rainy day.

Lake Temagami

One look at a map reveals the great potential of northeastern Ontario’s Lake Temagami for an extended no-portage canoe trip. Temagami’s namesake lake is sprawling, with hundreds of kilometres of shoreline to explore. The Central Lake Temagami Access Road is your best starting point, providing good long-term parking and direct access to the mid-portion of the lake.

The lake’s deep southern bays beckon with tall pines and stunning smooth-rock campsites, and you can trace the narrow channel (no portages here) to Cross Lake for even more seclusion. Sharp Rock and Sandy inlets, in the northern reaches of the lake, have a distinct feel with a stark contrast of narrow island channels and vast horizon views. You could easily spend a week circumnavigating Lake Temagami’s wild and diverse shores.

  • Rent a canoe from Temagami Outfitting Company on Highway 11. It’s possible to start an extended trip from the nearby Temagami town docks
  • Finlayson Point Provincial Park offers a quiet campground amidst the big pine of a classic Lake Temagami cove, with outstanding opportunities for portage-free day trips

Whitewater Lake, Wabakimi Provincial Park

Whitewater Lake is a massive body of island-pocked water that epitomizes the remote wilderness of northwestern Ontario’s Wabakimi Provincial Park . The lake offers some of the best walleye fishing and opportunities to see woodland caribou in the region, as well as abundant campsites on glacier-polished rock and sand beaches. Once upon a time, Whitewater Lake was the cherished redoubt of Wendell Beckwith, an eccentric inventor who built a series of immaculately crafted cabins on a secluded island, which are returning to the earth today. Whitewater is a popular destination for experienced trippers. But you don’t have to portage to get there if you book a bushplane flight with an Armstrong, Ontario-based outfitter and take a week or so to traverse Whitewater Lake’s shores.

  • Strap your canoe to the strut of a vintage floatplane and enjoy the scenic half-hour flight to Whitewater Lake with Armstrong’s Mattice Lake Air
  • Full Wabakimi canoe trip outfitting packages are available from Wabakimi Outfitters
  • For a truly luxurious experience, fly into Whitewater Lake with Wilderness North and stay in a comfortable cabin

Lake Opeongo, Algonquin

Opeongo is a large body of water in the heart of Algonquin Provincial Park with plenty of shoreline and islands to support a five-day canoe adventure. The lake is located off of Highway 60 and serves as a popular entry point to the park’s backcountry. Opeongo features countless islands to explore; and the mouth of Hailstorm Creek, located in the lake’s northwest corner, is the site of a massive bog that’s a great place to view moose and many songbirds in the spring. Be sure to reserve your Lake Opeongo campsites well in advance.

  • Algonquin Outfitters ’ paddling centre on Lake Opeongo features a huge fleet of rental canoes and camping gear, as well as providing route planning advice and water taxi service to ease your access to remote corners of the lake. Custom-guided canoe trips are also available
  • Opeongo Outfitters offers canoe rentals, outfitting, water taxi services and boat tours on Lake Opeongo

Two people paddle canoe next to sandy shore.

Goulais River, Sault Ste. Marie

Located just north of Sault Ste. Marie with easy access from Highway 17 and Highway 556, the Goulais River is a little known gem with several options for no-portage canoe day trips. Intermediate paddlers love the Class I-II rapids between the village of Searchmont and Kirby’s Corner, where the river crosses Highway 552 east of the Trans-Canada Highway. This 20-kilometre section is best in high water conditions and includes plenty of easy whitewater, with several campsite possibilities on gravel bars and beaches. The river becomes more mellow at Kirby’s Corner, making the run from Highway 552 to Highway 17 a relaxing float trip for families that’s suitable all summer long.

  • Rent a canoe or sign up for a guided day trip and learn more about the Algoma Highlands region with Forest the Canoe , a Goulais River-based outfitter specializing in interpretive trips
  • Mountainview Lodge offers canoe rentals, vehicle shuttles and accommodations on the Goulais River near the village of Searchmont
  • Bellevue Valley Lodge provides B&B accommodations in scenic hardwood hills, minutes from the Goulais River, with great opportunities for paddlers, mountain bikers and nature enthusiasts

View from stern of canoe of woman in bow seat.

Magpie River, Wawa

The Magpie River is an under-the-radar, no-portage canoe day trip located just north of Wawa, off the Trans-Canada Highway. You’ll encounter a few easy rapids and sections of swift water along the 15-kilometre run from Steephill Dam to Highway 17. The big attraction is the awesome scenery, featuring high rolling sand hills reminiscent of the Canadian barrenlands. The Magpie is also an excellent place for blueberry picking and the fishing for trout and walleye is pretty good, too; it’s easy to be distracted by the sights and opportunities for harvesting along the way.

  • Vehicle shuttles, route information and canoe rentals are available from Naturally Superior Adventures . The company also offers a self-guided eco-tour (complete with canoe rental and shuttle) on the Michipicoten River, another great day trip with no need to portage
  • Stay at the Wawa Motor Inn and visit the lakeshore in downtown Wawa

Upper Ottawa River, Temiskaming Shores

The mighty Ottawa River gets its start in the highlands of northeastern Ontario, flowing out of Lake Temiskaming. This section of river is notable for its towering shorelines and impressive white pine, yet it’s rarely paddled. The Upper Ottawa River offers good opportunities to canoe the headwaters of an iconic Canadian river with plenty of potential for trips spanning a long weekend to a week or more, depending on your aspirations and experience level.

  • Smoothwater Outfitters is a longtime Temagami canoe outfitter that offers vehicle shuttles for upper Ottawa River canoe trips and outstanding waterfront accommodations just off Highway 11

 THE JOURNEY

3 Hour / 9 KM Guided Tour

Our journey begins within 60 foot sheer rock walls, ancient coral reefs lef t behind by the melting and carving of the Laurentide Ice Sheet some 15,000 years ago. The mists from the Tooth of Time waterfall wash over us as we learn to paddle our crafts at its foot. As the sun lowers the crowds have departed and the entirety of the Elora Gorge is ours to explore, and our s alone. With growing confidence we turn our attention downstream, leaving the thrashing of the waterfall behind, replaced by the echoes of the rapids bouncing off of the overhanging cliffs above. The river, once meandering at a leisurely pace, has accelerated animatedly, and we are now at its mercy as we navigate its twists and turns. In time, we leave the Elora Gorge behind and the Grand River Valley surrounds us with its gentler beauty . While the sinking sun p aints the sky in hues of pink and purple and the birds sing, all there is to do is relax and bask in the beauty.

How to get a launch permit and other questions answered about kayaking in Bucks County

guided kayak tours ontario

Spring is finally upon us with summer close behind.

And as things warm up, it’s the perfect time to explore the scenic waterways of Bucks County.

Whether you’re new to kayaking canoeing or paddleboarding — or simply need a refresher — here are a few things to help put you on the path to smooth waters:

Do I need a boat registration or launch permit in PA and Bucks County ?

Yes, but what you need depends on where you go…

If you plan to launch from a Pennsylvania state park or forest, such as Nockamixon State Park, all kayaks and canoes must display one of the following:

  • Boat registration from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission ;
  • Launching permit from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, which can be applied for online at huntfish.pa.gov ;
  • Or a Pennsylvania state park launching permit or mooring permit, which is available in-person at most state park offices.

If you’re heading out to a county-owned park or launch access, then you’ll need an additional Bucks County launch permit, which can be purchased online or in-person at one of the county boat rental facilities at Core Creek Park in Middletown or Peace Valley Park in New Britain.

How do I stay safe while out on the water?

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources recommends:

  • Have a float plan by telling someone where you’re going, how long you expect to be out and what time you’ll be back.
  • Check the weather for possible thunderstorms and dress for the temps in lightweight quick-drying layers.
  • Wear a properly fitted personal floatation device with an emergency whistle.
  • Bring a dry bag to store items you want to bring along, including water, snacks, sunblock, bug spray, medication, extra clothing and a first aid kit. If you have room, you may also want to pack are a bilge pump, flashlight and sunglasses.
  • Children 12 and younger are required to wear a life jacket in all canoes and kayaks.
