Groups for the Reykjav í k Food Walk gather at the famous Harpa Concert Hall and leave after everyone has arrived. Unlike the other tours, Reykjav í k Pub Crawl starts at a super secret location, which will only be disclosed after you book it!

Reykjav í k City Tour Aboard a Hop-on Hop-off Bus leave from the bus stop close to Harpa Concert Hall. The whole tour lasts around an hour and twenty minutes and you can hop on and off the bus wherever you like. 

Reykjav í k Walking Tour assembly point is the “What’s On” tourist information center located at Laugavegur 5, 101 Reykjavík. It starts at 2 p.m. so you should be there a few minutes before 2 o’clock.

Pick-up Tours

Inside the Thrihnukagigur Volcano (6 Hours)

Inside the Thrihnukagigur Volcano is one of the exciting and adventurous day tours from Reykjavik that made our list. Pickup from your hotel or guesthouse is included in the tour! Also, this tour does require hiking, and hiking boots are required as sneakers are not suitable! Dress warm as the weather can be brutally cold on the hike during certain times of the year.

After your bus ride, you will being your hike on the dormant Thrihnukagigur Volcano. Your guide will lead you on a moderate 45 minute uphill (and uneven) hike from Bláfjöll mountain cabin to Thrihnukagigur Volcano. There will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy the lava scenery and snap some pictures.

After arriving at the crater the guide will help you with your harness and helmet to prepare you for the 400 feet descent inside the volcano. Each group is split into a smaller party of 4-5 people for safety! The 10-minute descent provides opportunities to experience the amazing views where you will have the chance to spend up to an hour inside the volcano.

The Trafalgar tour of Iceland and the Blue Lagoon was great. This was our first organized tour and we were a little nervous what to expect. It was a smallish group (around 20 people) which made for a more personal trip, and also more room on the coach. The tour itinerary included a number of Icelandic cultural experiences that we would likely have missed if we had organized our own plans. These made for a much richer trip, and we were glad they were included. Kudos go to the tour guides when a day's schedule had to be reworked at an hour's notice due to 100mph wind gusts that made driving unsafe. The "plan-B" turned out to be a rewarding experience in its own right, bravo Xavier & Amy! The highlight of the trip was seeing the Northern Lights on a nighttime boat ride outside Rekjavik harbor. (this cannot be guaranteed, but we were lucky). A low light was the Blue Lagoon, which was rather run-down. We had independently been to Sky Lagoon before the trip started, and that was a much better experience.

Our time with Arctic Adventures was great. We learned a lot and saw such beautiful landscapes. There was some stress related to not knowing where we were going to stay prior to our departure… it wasn’t until we had landed in Reykjavik that we knew which hotel to go to. I wish airport transfers were included as it would have been less to worry about. All in all, it was a memorable trip.

Pedro was an excellent guide, and we had a really nice gtoup on the trip. The views from the hikes really were amazing. Accommodation was a mountain hut, basic and shared, but really everything you could ask for in the remote location. Highly recommend this trip.

Although we usually rent a car, we have booked tours in Reykjavik during some of our trips to Iceland, and the experience has always been fantastic. To help you plan your route if you have no intention of renting a car in Iceland , this guide will reveal the 15 best excursions in Reykjavik. What’s more, it’s worth bathing in these waters during the winter season since you can simultaneously enjoy a spectacular snowy landscape.

If you want to visit the Blue Lagoon from Reykjavik and you don’t have a car, you can hire round-trip transportation from the capital. However, from my experience, I’ll say that the tickets usually sell out immediately and if you don’t purchase in advance, you will run out of luck. So, I suggest booking your Reykjavik tour ticket together with the transportation here . A northern lights tour is one of the best activities in Reykjavik , especially if you have never seen this fascinating phenomenon before. Fortunately, there are several excursions from Reykjavik to see the northern lights, so you can enjoy the aurora borealis however you please.

Although this guide includes my recommendation for the best Northern Lights tours from Reykjavik , this is the best basic tour . Accompanied by a Northern Lights expert, you will go to an area with prime viewing opportunities that night. If you opt for this Reykjavik tour , I suggest taking it during the first few days of your trip since you can repeat it for free if you don’t see any auroras. This is definitely one of the best excursions in Reykjavík if you want to witness this spectacle.

You can also take this same tour in a small group if you want a more laid-back pace. Alternatively, you can exclude the hotel pick-up if you prefer cheap tours. Just keep in mind that you can only repeat the tour once if you don‘t see the northern lights the first night.

In addition to the options I’ve mentioned, which are usually the most common, you can also see the northern lights by boat. Or, you could combine the activity with one of the most popular tours from Reykjavik , such as a whale watching tour , the South route with a walk on the Sólheimajökull glacier , a tour of the Golden Circle , or a visit to the Blue Lagoon .

5. Whale and puffin tours in Reykjavik

Reykjavik, together with Husavik, it’s one of the best places for whale watching tours in Iceland. The best thing about doing a whale watching excursion in Reykjavík is that it doesn’t matter what time of year you travel because there are always possibilities to see them, even in winter. Of course, if you do it in summer, you’ll also be able to see puffins.

Of all the tours from Reykjavik to see whales , this is undoubtedly the best one since they allow you to repeat it if you don’t see any whales. Keep in mind that although the odds are high, they are wild animals that can sometimes act unpredictably, so you might not always see them. For this reason, I suggest not leaving this tour for the last day of your trip, in case you have to repeat it. To be fair, we have always seen them the first time, but you never know.

If you travel between May 15 and August 15, you can take a whale and puffin tour like this one . Or, if you travel during the summer solstice, at the end of June, you can combine whale watching with a midnight sun tour by booking this tour.

Curiously, inside the tunnel, you won’t find any type of animal or insect because they find the interior temperature uncomfortable.

In this inaccessible area, you will find one of the most demanding but rewarding hiking trails in the country, the Fimmvörðuháls. The route is quite long and uneven, so it usually takes two days.

As you can see, there are a lot of things to do in Iceland , and if you only visit Reykjavík, you won’t be able to truly experience this country. Pick up would be at the port (we’ll disembark Azamara) at about 9 am, but need to be dropped off at KEF airport by 2:30 pm. Can you help? Thanks!

Reykjavík is the capital of Iceland and the northernmost capital of any sovereign state in the world.

Despite a small population (approximately 120,000, with just over 200,000 in the Greater Reykjavík area), it is a vibrant city that draws an ever-increasing number of visitors every year. It is the financial, cultural, and political center of Iceland, and has a reputation for being one of the cleanest and safest cities in the world.

The city of Reykjavík is located in southwest Iceland by Faxaflói Bay. Throughout the ages, the landscape has been shaped by glaciers, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions and the area is geothermal; after all, its name translates to ‘Smoky Bay’.

Much of the current city area was subglacial during the Ice Age, with the glacier reaching as far as the Álftanes peninsula, while other areas lay under the sea.  After the end of the Ice Age, the land rose as the glaciers drifted away, and it began to take on its present form.

The coastline of Reykjavík is set with peninsulas, coves, straits, and islands, most notably the island of Viðey , and seabirds and whales frequent the shores. The mountain ring as seen from the shore is particularly beautiful.

Mount Esjan is the highest mountain in the vicinity of Reykjavík and the most distinctive feature of the coastline. This majestic summit is also highly popular amongst hikers and climbers. Other notable mountains that can be seen from the seaside are Akrafjall and Skarðsheiði.

On clear days, one may even see as far as the legendary Snæfellsjökull glacier , at the end of the Snæfellsnes peninsula .

The largest river to run through the city is Elliðaá in Elliðaárdalur valley, which is also one of Iceland’s best rivers for salmon fishing.

Transportation

There are no trains or trams in Iceland, but most people travel by car. The city also operates a bus system. There are two major harbors in town, the old harbor in the center and Sundahöfn in the east.

The domestic Reykjavík Airport is located at Vatnsmýrin, not far from the city center and close to the hill Öskjuhlíð and the restaurant, vantage point, and exhibition center Perlan. The international Keflavík Airport at Miðnesheiði heath then lies around 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the city.

Cars, jeeps, and bicycles can be readily rented in the city and many organized tours are also being offered. It is, however, quite easy to walk between the major sites.

What to See & Do in Reykjavik

The local arts scene is strong in Iceland, with annual events and festivals , and many of the artists from which have hit the international stage.

Major events taking place in Reykjavík include Iceland Airwaves, Reykjavík Pride, RIFF (The Reykjavík International Film Festival), The Reykjavík Literature Festival, Culture Night, the Reykjavík Arts Festival, Food & Fun, the Reykjavík Fashion Festival, and the Sónar music festival.

Amongst the famous people from Reykjavík are musicians like Björk Guðmundsdóttir and Sigur Rós , and writers Halldór Laxness (born on the main street, Laugavegur ) and Arnaldur Indriðason.

Those eager to soak up the local culture should visit the city’s many museums , exhibitions, and galleries , and  check out live music  at the cafés, bars, and concert venues dotted around. You could look at the programs of what’s on at the Harpa music hall or the theatres, or else plan a few hours at the lighthouse at Grótta , the shopping street of Laugavegur, or the old harbor and the flea market.

You could even book a bird- and whale-watching tour or a visit to Viðey island. Ther possibilities are endless.

Make sure to visit the public square of Austurvöllur, one of the city’s most popular gathering places, where you’ll also find the national parliament, the Alþingi, as well as the state church, a statue of independence hero Jón Sigurðsson, cafés, bars, and restaurants.

Austurvöllur was central in the protests following the banking collapse of 2008, along with Lækjargata, home to the House of Government. You are also not likely to miss the great church of Hallgrímskirkja that towers over the city from the hill of Skólavörðuholt, from which you’ll get a great view of the city.

Try a walk by the city pond, Tjörnin , to greet the many birds that frequent the area and to visit the city hall, stationed by its banks. A beautiful park lies by the pond, ideal for a nice walk, and sometimes concerts get held there.

Further off is the campus of the University of Iceland, the Nordic house, and the Vatnsmýrin wetland, a particularly pleasant place, but be mindful to not disturb the wildlife thereby keeping to the pathways.

For a nice swim on a warm day, we particularly recommend Nauthólsvík beach, which is heated with geothermal water. Those who love a dip should also visit the Laugardalur valley , home to one of the city’s best swimming pools, which sits a short walk away from Ásmundarsafn gallery, a beautiful botanical garden, and a domestic zoo.

A walk by the Ægissíða beach, with its old fishing sheds, in the western part of Reykjavík also holds a particular charm. From there, you can see all the way to the president’s house at Bessastaðir, which is also a historical site in its own right, having been the educational center of Iceland for centuries. 

Another place that offers one of the city’s best views is Perlan , up on Öskjuhlíð hill. The hill itself is a popular place to spend a few hours, with over 176,000 trees and great opportunities for walking and cycling. Perlan also has an observation deck with great views, a café, and an exhibition center.

Furthermore, the city is a short drive from many of Iceland’s major attractions, most famously the Golden Circle and the Blue Lagoon . In close vicinity, you’ll also find the Heiðmörk preservation area , a favorite local site of the people of Reykjavík, as well as the Blue Mountains , one of Iceland’s best skiing venues.

Find time for a dip in one of the capital's hot pools

A swim in one of Reykjavik’s geothermal pools is both a wonderful way to relax and — if you select the right spot — an excellent way to meet and mingle with the locals, who use the pools to socialise. One of the best is Vesturbæjarlaug, which can be reached via a pleasant 20-minute promenade walk from the city or by bus. It has four hot tubs, one cold bath, a large outdoor pool and a steam room.

Insider’s Tip: Be aware that Icelandic pools and changing areas are often mixed sex. If you don’t have your swimming costume you can rent one from most places.

Experience live music at the city's most impressive cultural venue

The Harpa Concert Hall has gone from being a costly controversy (it was built during the economic collapse) to one of the country’s main sources of cultural pride. Home to the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and the Icelandic Opera, its stunning facade, designed by Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson, contains several visually stunning halls with outstanding acoustics, as well as a record shop, café and restaurant and more.

Insider’s Tip: Another option is to take one of the 30-minute daily guided tours, which offer insights into the history, architecture, design and acoustics of the building, as well as visiting parts of the interior not normally open to the public.

Explore Reykjavik’s regenerated harbour

Reykjavik’s harbour area, once the lone preserve of ships and their captains and fishermen, still functions as a traditional harbour, complete with trawlers, whaling ships and other boats. But a recent regeneration project, starting with the Harpa Concert Hall development, has made it into a mini-district of its own, with cafés, restaurants and even museums to visit.

Insider’s Tip: Wandering aimlessly is pleasant enough, but specific activities to look out for include taking a whale- or puffin-watching trip from one of the harbour tour companies such as Elding , enjoying a delicious lobster soup at Sægreifinn , or browsing the Reykjavik Maritime Museum  whose permanent exhibition explores 150 years of fisheries in Reykjavik.

Learn the story of Iceland, from Vikings to the present day

Icelandic history has the advantage of a relatively straightforward and clear narrative while still containing plenty of drama. The permanent exhibition at Reykjavik’s National Museum tells the entire story from settlement to the present-day, making great use of various archeological finds, as well as historic photos. Among the 2,000 objects are replicas of swords and drinking horns, plus an elaborately decorated 13th-century church door from Valþjófsstaðir.

Go back in time at a rural open-air museum

The Arbær Open Air Museum, part of the Reykjavík City Museum, was created to give an example of how rural Reykjavik life used to be just a few decades ago. Essentially a village a 15-minute drive outside of the capital, it was built around the remnants of a working farm and supplemented by buildings moved here from the city-centre, as well as some domestic animals and old machinery. 

Insider’s Tip: Staff dress in period costume and offer workshops for traditional crafts such as spinning yarn, making candles and churning butter, making it an interesting visit for adults and children alike. Free guided tours take place daily at 1pm.

Hike past lakes, waterfalls and cliffs in a pretty national park

Þingvellir National Park, located around 30 miles outside of the city, is one of the most enticing natural sites in reasonable proximity to Reykjavik. It is most famously the site of Iceland’s original Viking parliament (Assembly) but it’s also a stunning natural park with easy to follow (mostly) wooden walkways guiding visitors past lakes, waterfalls, cliffs and occasional buildings such as the pretty Þingvellir church.

Insider’s Tip: If you’re a water enthusiast, book a trip to the park’s Silfra fissure , the only place in the world where you can snorkel and dive between the North American and Eurasian continents.

Enjoy outdoor art in a peaceful sculpture garden

The Reykjavik Art Museum is split between three different venues, the most alluring being Ásmundarsafn — a museum dedicated to the work and life of sculptor Ásmundur Sveinsson. It’s not as central as the other two locations (although it is still only a 30-minute walk from the city centre) but the reward is a unique piece of Mediterranean-style white domed architecture, which the artist designed himself, plus a selection of his works both inside and in the pleasant sculpture garden. Keen for more? The more central Hafnarhús part of the Reykjavík Art Museum, has six galleries with a mix of contemporary art (local and international) and a permanent collection of works from Iceland’s most famous pop artist, Erró. 

Insider’s Tip: To make the most of the trip, combine it with a walk to the nearby botanic garden, Reykjavik Park and Zoo , or a dip in the thermal pools at the Laugardalur Sports Complex .

Marshall House

The Marshall House was built in 1948 in the Grandi area—an extension of the harbour district that has long been an important part of the local fishing industry. The house started life as a fish meal factory but along with the renovation of the entire area, it was transformed into a cultural centre in 2017. Characterised by large windows and a linear procession of beams and columns in twentieth-century industrial style (as well as an eye-catching concrete staircase), the space consists of four independently-operated art spaces: The Living Art Museum, a non-profit museum founded by artists in the 70s; Kling & Bang, an artist-run gallery space; Þula, a newer gallery focusing on emerging artists; and i8 Grandi, the second space of i8 Gallery, a long-standing contemporary art gallery founded in 1995—single artist shows here last a whole year. On the top floor of the building is the private studio of the award-winning eponymous Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, whose designs were used in the Harpa Concert Hall, and many of his works can be seen on the ground floor of the Marshall House, where visitors can also grab a coffee or lunch at La Primavera restaurant.
